Résumé :
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to describe the underlying design information and success factors for production equipment acquisition, in order to support the design of high-performance production systems. Design/methodology/approach - The research strategy employed was an in-depth case study of an industrialization project, together with a questionnaire of 25 equipment suppliers. Findings - The study provides the reader with an insight into the role of design information when acquiring production equipment by addressing questions such as: What type of information is used? How do equipment suppliers obtain information? What factors facilitate a smooth production system acquisition? Research limitations/implications - Limitations are primarily associated with the chosen research methodology, which requires further empirical studies to establish a generic value. Practical implications - The implications are that manufacturing companies have to transfer various types of design information with respect to the content and kind of information. More attention has to be placed on what information is transferred to ensure that equipment suppliers receive all the information needed to design and subsequently build the production equipment. To facilitate integration of equipment suppliers, manufacturing companies should appoint a contact person who can gather, understand and transform relevant design information. Originality/value - External integration of equipment suppliers in production system design by means of design information is an area that has been rarely addressed in academia and industry

Résumé :
This thesis examined the 'recoil' effect of the ice hockey stick shaft during a stationary slap shot. Nine subjects were tested. Four were classified as 'elite' and the remaining five as the 'recreational' group. Their performances were evaluated by simultaneously recording stick movement and bending from high-speed video capture (1000 Hz) and puck acceleration from a triaxial accelerometer positioned inside the puck. Data were analyzed with a one-way ANOVA for several dependant variables including final puck velocity, stick shaft bending, blade-puck contact time and stick kinetic energy. The results indicated that: (1) the puck velocity was influenced by skill level, blade-puck contact time and stick bending energy but not puck acceleration. Further studies are needed to address the influence of events before and after blade-puck contact as well as the strength of the player on the mechanical energy and impulse given to the puck.

Résumé :
Ice hockey facial protectors are essential to prevent eye and dental injuries but must also not encumber vision and, in turn, players' performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of three different facial protection conditions on response time (RsT) and kinematics in a goal directed pointing task: helmet (control), visor, and cage. A 13 light target array and six-camera Vicon Mx system were used to collect response time and kinematic data. Subjects recruited were 16 male and 12 female varsity ice hockey players (n=28). Results demonstrated that although kinematics remained largely unaffected, throughout the visual field test RsT increased significantly with the cage (23 ms) as well as delayed head movement for both the visor (14 ms) and cage (18 ms). These differences may well represent a functional disadvantage to a player's performance given the dynamic, open environment where multiple players contest for puck possession. In summary, further research is warranted to achieve both optimal performance and safety.

Résumé :
This work covers a reassessment of the 'Hot Break' separation problem by a mechanical engineer from outside the brewing industry. The solid-liquid separation problem was therefore investigated without prior knowledge of constraints or current practices. During the brewing of beer an unwanted, insoluble precipitate, 'trub' is formed, reported to have undesirable effects on the finished beer quality. The existing equipment, 'whirlpool' separators, designed to eliminate this 'trub' performed poorly, allowing much of the precipitate to be carried over to subsequent processes. To remedy the problem, a program to either: 1. design suitable replacement separators or; 2 • modify existing separators to enhance their performance, was pursued. To evaluate possible alternative separators determination of the relevant physical (solid, liquid) properties, measurement of the process parameters at peak production, and review of the chemical constraints was necessary. Performance of the current whirlpool separators was ascertained to establish the extent of the ~xisting problem. Existing efficiencies set a benchmark for comparison against proposed alternatives. Through exhaustiv~ literature review, consultive advice, a series of experiments and rig testing, an extensive range of separation techniques was evaluated, A review of over forty-five reports on whirlpool performance and design practices, the majority of which being the basis of doctoral dissertations, combined with the evaluation of a third whirlpool at Milton Brewery revealed whirlpools to be the most suitable and logical choice. It seemed that the inherent problems in whirlpool design stem from the haphazard approach adopted by the brewing industry. To redress this problem an exp~rimental program to optimize whirlpool tank geometry and operation was initiated. Both experimental and hardware design were fundamentally different to all previous endeavors to establish whirlpool design guidelines. A pilot plant was designed and commissioned such that direct measurement of the 'whirlpool' response independent of other secondary effects was possible. The experimental program produced · over two hundred comparative whirlpool indices over a range of geometric and operational configurations. These suggested that whirlpool performance could be optimised in shallow vessels using low inlet velocities. Finally, the need for secondary separators to be used in conjunction with whirlpool tanks would diminish with improved primary separation.

Résumé :
The purpose of this thesis was to examine the three dimensional kinematic differences between elite and recreational ice hockey players while performing a stationary slap shot. Ten subjects, five elite-level players and five recreational players, each performed five stationary ice hockey slap shots. Data were collected using the UltratrakRTM electromagnetic system (Polhemus Inc., Burlington, VT, USA) at 60 Hz. Kinematics of the torso, arms and hockey stick were examined using a multiple analysis of variance (MANOVA). The results indicated that: (1) the elite subjects shot significantly (p < 0.05) faster due to the translational movement aspect of the stick; (2) the proximal to distal kinematic chain sequence of the elite subjects was better than the recreational subjects; and (3) the elite subjects showed less variability in stick movement within groups, than the recreational subjects. Further studies are needed to address kinematics of the lower limbs and of different ice hockey stick skills.

Résumé :
This thesis was to examine the interaction of players' skill level, body strength, and various types of stick construction and stiffness on the performance of the hockey shots. Forty subjects were tested, and each subject performed the slap and wrist shots with different stick shaft constructions and stiffness. Shot mechanics were evaluated by simultaneously recording of ground reaction forces, stick movements and peak puck velocity. Data analyzed with a 4-way ANOVA for several dependent variables. The results indicated that: (1) the slap shot was faster than the wrist shot corresponding to greater vertical force, stick bending and hand placement; (2) the puck velocity was influenced by skill level and body strength not stick type; and, (3) the skilled players generated greater vertical force and stick bending by adjusting their hand positions. Further studies are needed to address the specific stick material and construction properties.

This thesis proposes an approach to supply base management that relies on differentiation between categories of suppliers. The objective of this thesis is to illustrate, through a real company's example, how profitability analysis can be combined with more typical supply base management approaches to improve a company's bottom line. The central innovation in the proposed approach is the use of an indication of suppliers' impact on company profits to segment the supply base. Previous work on supplier segmentation uses factors such as amount spent at the supplier and the importance of the purchased products to distinguish between suppliers. This thesis builds upon those approaches by adding an analysis of the profit contribution from the supplier and the cost of managing the supplier. Suppliers that cost a lot to manage and contribute little profit require improvement or become targets for supply base reduction. Suppliers that work to reduce the customer's cost of managing them and contribute positively to the customer's bottom line deserve reinforcement and stand as examples for the rest of the supply base. The approach proposed in this thesis provides managers with a tool to evaluate and improve the profitability and performance of their supply base.

As companies outsource more manufacturing and design responsibilities to external vendors and therefore become less vertically integrated, the role of supply chain management becomes increasingly complex. Its role is particularly difficult when product generation follows a serial process flow, with the supply chain function residing at the end and where it inherits poorly defined supplier relationships. A more integrated approach that seeks to proactively design the supply chain during product generation is required. Central to this integrated approach is the timely exchange of information both within the company, between R&D and procurement, and external to the company, between procurement and its suppliers. The timing of the information flow is crucial. It needs to occur before the company is locked into a single supplier and when its bargaining power is the highest. It also needs to occur in a manner that does not slow down the product development process. In practice, that means that specific information needs to be exchanged and committed to prior to supplier selection. Ultimately, the information exchange described in this thesis leads to improved supplier relations that enable the company to shift its procurement practices from the tactical approach of buying materials to the strategic approach of buying supply services. The research for this thesis was conducted at a partner company of the Leaders for Manufacturing (LFM) program. The company manufactures test equipment used in the semiconductor industry. Due to the highly cyclical and unpredictable nature of this industry, supply chains that can guarantee responsiveness and availability are desirable. The supply chain design recommendations proposed in this thesis are based on an analysis of a recent product generation program at the company. By continuing to implement these recommendations, the company should benefit from shorter product development cycle times, smoother production ramps, improved customer service levels and lower sourcing costs.

Résumé :
The exposure to fumes and gases is one of the hazards associated with welding operations. Apart from research conducted on the mechanism of fume and gas formation and the relationship between fume formation rates and common welding parameters, little is known about the exposure process during welding. This research project aimed to identify the factors that influence exposure, develop an understanding of their role in the exposure process and through this understanding formulate strategies for the effective control of exposure during welding. To address these aims a literature review and an experimental program was conducted The literature review surveyed epidemiological, toxicological and exposure data. The experimental program involved three approaches, the first, an evaluation of the factors that influence exposure by assessing a metal inert gas/mild steel welding process in a workshop setting. The second approach involved the study of exposure in a controlled environment provided by a wind tunnel and simulated welding process. The final approach was to investigate workplace conditions through an assessment of exposure and control strategies in industry. The exposure to fumes and gases during welding is highly variable and frequently in excess of the health based exposure standards. Exposure is influenced by a number of a factors including the welding process, base material, arc time, electrode, arc current, arc voltage, arc length, electrode polarity, shield gas, wire-to-metal-work distance (metal inert gas), metal transfer mode, intensity of the UV radiation (ozone), the frequency of arc ignitions (ozone), thermal buoyancy generated by the arc process, ventilation (natural and mechanical), the welding environment, the position of the welder, the welders stance, helmet type, and helmet position. Exposure occurs as a result of three processes: the formation of contaminants at or around the arc region; their transport from the arc region, as influenced by the entry and thermal expansion of shield gases, the vigorous production of contaminants, thermal air currents produced by the heat of the arc process, and ventilation; and finally the entry of contaminants into the breathing zone of the welder, as influenced by the position of the welder, the welders stance, helmet type, and the helmet position. The control of exposure during welding can be achieved by several means: through the selection of welding parameters that generate low contaminant formation rates; through the limitation of arc time; and by isolating the breathing zone of the welder from the contaminant plume through the use of ventilation, welder position or the welding helmet as a physical barrier. Effective control is achieved by careful examination of the workplace, the selection of the most appropriate control option, and motivation of the workforce.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether ice hockey facial protectors can decrease overall head acceleration during blunt impacts as well as to identify if attenuation differences exist between visors and cages. Commercial models of three cages and three visors were assessed. Blunt impacts were simulated permitting the measurement of peak accelerations (PA) within the surrogate head form. Results indicated that indeed face protectors in combination with helmets substantially reduced PA during blunt impacts within threshold safety limits (below 300 g's). In general, cages showed lower PA than visors (p=0.004). Differences between models were also observed during repeated impacts and impact site (p=0.0001, p=0.007). In conclusion, this study demonstrates that facial protectors function beyond their role in preventing facial injuries, complementing the role of the helmet in attenuating head deceleration during impact. Consequently, the utilization of facial protectors may reduce the severity and incidence of mTBI.

Résumé :
This thesis describes a multi-channel millimeter wave radiometer control system that will be used for atmospheric water vapor and temperature profile retrievals. The system consists of four subsystems which provide a total of nine frequency channels, a steerable reflector to permit slant-path measurements at different zenith angles, and a host computer for analyzing the data. The nine channels span the water vapor and oxygen absorption lines in the 20 to 60 GHz range. A distributed processing architecture is implemented to control the system. Each of the subsystems employs a signal processor and a microcontroller, which are configurable from the host. The signal processor filters the receiver's output, while the microcontroller oversees the radiometer, accepts data from the signal processor and communicates with the host. The host executes a custom shell that allows it to concurrently accept data from the subsystems, position the reflector and execute user analysis programs.

Webster, James. « The perception of comfort and fit of personal protective equipment in sport ». Thesis, Loughborough University, 2010. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/6242.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
During the design of sports equipment, the main focus is usually on physical performance attributes, neglecting key subjective factors such as feel and comfort. The personal protective equipment worn in sport is a typical example, where injury prevention has taken precedence over user comfort, but it is anticipated that with a new approach to the design process, comfort can be improved without sacrificing protection. Using cricket leg guards and taekwondo chest guards as an example, this study aimed to develop a systematic method for assessing user perceptions and incorporating them into the design process. Players perceptions of the factors that influence the comfort of cricket leg guards and taekwondo chest guards were elicited through the use of co-discovery sessions, focus groups and individual interviews, and analysed through an inductive process to produce a comfort model. The relative importance of each different comfort dimension was identified through the use of an online questionnaire utilising the analytical hierarchy process method. Through the combination of these methods, six general dimensions were identified with a weighting regarding the amount to which each one determines a user's perceived comfort. For both cricket and taekwondo, the majority of players ranked Fit as the most important factor affecting comfort. Experimental procedures were developed to objectively test the Fit of cricket leg guards, with regards to batting kinematics, running performance and contact pressure. These methods were combined with subjective assessments of leg guard performance, to determine if there was a relationship between users perceived comfort and objective test results. It was found that shot ROM and performance were not significantly affected by cricket leg guards, despite perceptions of increased restriction whilst wearing certain pads. Wearing cricket leg guards was found to significantly decrease running performance when compared to running without pads (p<0.05). In addition, it was found that the degree of impedance depended on pad design and could not solely be attributed to additional mass. These results correlated with the subjective assessment of three different leg guards, with respondents identifying the pad which had the largest influence on their running biomechanics and impeded their performance the most, as the most restrictive pad. Contact pressure under the pad and straps was also measured for four different leg guards whilst running. The results found that the top strap applied the greatest amount of pressure to the leg, especially at the point of maximum knee flexion. The peak pressure under the top strap was found to reach up to three times that of any other area of the pad. These results were reflected in the subjective assessment of the leg guards, with all nine subjects identifying the top strap as an area of discomfort for certain pads. The results also suggested there was a preference for pads with a larger more consistent contact area, as pad movement was perceived to increase when contact area variation was greater. Finally the results from this research were used to develop a product design specification (PDS) for a cricket leg guard, specifying size, mass, contact pressure and shape. The PDS was used to develop a concept design which would maximise comfort, whilst maintaining protection.

Personal electric vehicles (EV) is an emerging technology that has gained much momentum in several markets during the past decade, and China is currently one of the markets where the growth in EV sales is the highest. Since the industry is still in its infancy, there are currently no clear structures regarding the relationships between different actors that apply to all markets globally, leading to great uncertainty in strategic decisions. The commissioner of this study is Hong Kong EV Power Ltd. (EV Power), a producer of EV supply equipment (EVSE) and related services in Hong Kong, which aspires to enter the Chinese mainland in the near future. However, EV Power has yet to decide which city they want to target first. This thesis aims to formulate a model that can be used to evaluate and compare geographic markets for a market entry by an EVSE company. Furthermore, the model is tested on three cities in Mainland China (Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen), in order to derive the most attractive city for EV Power and to evaluate the adequacy of the model. Lastly, with the results from the city evaluation, as a point of departure, success factors for an entry into Mainland China by the commissioning company will be summarized. In order to achieve this objective, four distinct data collection methods have been used: First, theory was studied, in order to gain background knowledge as well as to understand specific factors that impact a market entry decision such as this. Second, EV Power’s current business in Hong Kong was observed, with a view to achieve an understanding of what has led the company to experience success in its home market. Third, Interviews with industry experts were conducted, so as to get a perspective on the industry as a whole. Fourth and last, secondary data for the different cities was collected, for the sake of evaluating them according to the developed model. The final model consists of five main factors that encompass the elements that influence a cities level of attractiveness for entry by an EV charging station supplier. The identified factors are: ‘Market accessibility’, ‘Short-term demand’, ‘Expected market share’, ‘Profit margin’, and ‘Long-term product potential’. These factors are in turn divided into sub factors that have their own set of drivers. Using the model to evaluate the cities, it was found that Shanghai is the most suitable city for a market entry by EV Power, mainly due to its dominance in the market for private EVs and a favourable regulatory environment. Finally, three main success factors, for such a market entry, were found: ‘Focus on services’, ‘Maintain partner relationships’, and ‘Enter early’.

The Capital Equipment Procurement group of Intel Corporation is responsible for developing and procuring the semiconductor processing capital equipment that is used throughout all of the company's development and manufacturing facilities. The semiconductor industry is faced with rapid technology change, increase in the complexity of the manufacturing process, and high cost of capital. In this challenging environment, the group is concerned with the following two issues required to maintain their leadership position in the industry. First is the need to evaluate risk earlier in the capital equipment specification and development cycle to ensure that the semiconductor processing capital equipment is developed on schedule (on-line, on-time) at an affordable cost. A previous model developed and used in the manufacturing readiness phase of process development serves as the basis for a new risk assessment approach. Modifications, including new risk categories, criteria, and processes enable the new model to be applied earlier, in the technology development phase. Second is the need for a more accurate cost model to capture the costs of new processes that employ equipment from existing processes at Intel. As Intel faces increasing cost pressure on some of the new commodity products it is developing, it must increase equipment reuse in its new process designs. A target costing model is developed that first sets target and baseline costs, and then tracks progress from the baseline cost until the target cost is achieved. This model is used to closely manage various cost reduction programs or projects being undertaken in its process development organization. The overall theme of this thesis is to demonstrate how these two program management systems can be used to manage
(cont.) the development of new manufacturing equipment such as needed in the semiconductor and other capital intensive industries.

As the development of Semiconductor industry as well as the changes of indus-trial demands move fast, the service supply chain has become increasingly important in several perspectives. To be a successful equipment supplier in the industry, it would be the key to manage service supply chain by finding the right balance between supply chain investments and customer satisfaction. Managing the supply chain with global perspective has been significantly focused in the past years in the industry. While “Fast” and “Cost effective” were the key factors of success in managing supply chains in 1990s, Dr. Hau L. Lee, the director of the “Stanford Institute for Innovations in Developing Economies” and the “Global Supply Chain Manage-ment Forum” has published a journal paper with subject of “the Triple A Supply chain” in 2004, given the industry to redirect their focus in managing the supply chain by implementing the core principle of it in order to attain its ultimate suffi-ciency. In addition to this theory, the “HP Desktop Printer Supply Chain”, a well-known literature published by Stanford reviewed in 2004 also advised a key suc-cess factor, the “Postponement strategy” that was implemented by HP which assisted the company to reorganize their Vancouver and global supply chain, and to succeed. In the extended study, the “Case study of Postponement in the supply chain”, a thesis for Master of Science in transportation at Massachusetts Institute of Technology made by Susan M. Rietze in June 2006, helps us to better understand the theory of “Postponement” and its adequate applications in the industries,. These three important literatures are good enough for those who are working in the industry to take as a model of their service supply chain reengi-neering. Real case studies on two top-5 Semiconductor Inspection and Metrology Equipment Suppliers (Company K &; Company R) are prepared to observe how they made improvement/reengineering to their service supply chains as well as the ways they developed the strategies, setting up their benchmarks and targeted metrics to transforming service supply chain management from a source of cus-tomer dissatisfaction into a competitive differentiator to the industry.

The semiconductor equipment spare parts supply chain has highly uncertain demand and supply. Its characteristic is quite different from that of electronics and IT product supply chains more commonly found in Taiwan. It must provide high level of responsiveness in order to satisfy its customer needs. However, responsiveness comes at a cost. Should the cost for achieving highly responsive supply chain become too high, the company's competitiveness will be impacted. Is it possible for the semiconductor equipment supplier to lower the cost in the supply chain while maintaining or even increasing its high level of responsiveness? Is there a systematic approach to achieve such goal? This research used case study method in an attempt to discover the answers to the fore-mentioned questions. The company in this case study is a leading supplier of wafer fabrication equipment to worldwide semiconductor industry. To support the competitive strategy of its equipment products, its supply chain strategy must ensure high level of responsiveness in its spare parts supply chain. However, the supply chain performance started to degrade at the end of 20th centuryoincreased cost of sales, high level of inventory with low inventory turn and unstable service level performance. From 2000 through 2003, the company implemented multiple initiatives in an effort to improve its supply chain’s performance. This research utilized “Supply Chain Decision-Making Framework” proposed by Chopra & Meindl [1] to analyze the supply chain problems and initiatives in this case, in order to validate the applicability of this framework. A quantitative analysis was conducted on 2004~2006 data after the initiatives were implemented. It showed significant improvements in both cost and responsiveness: 1.Reduced cost of sales: 64% of revenue in 2003 to 53% in 2006 2.Reduced inventory: US$644 millions in 2002 to US$383 millions in 2005 3.Improved inventory turn: 1.2 in 2002 to 2.0 in 2005 4.Improved service level: unstable performance in 1999~2001 to 97%~99% in 2003 and afterwards, significantly exceeding the commitment of 92%. The successful application of “supply chain macro processes” and “supply chain performance drivers” in the analysis of this case proved the validity of the research framework. Finally, three recommendations were proposedothe expansion of supply chain decision-making framework, the application of the initiatives discussed in this case to other industries and suggestion for further study.

Résumé :
Background: Knowledge partnerships are conducted based on a model of knowledge creation and management. SECI model, created by Nonaka and Toyama, helps firms to deal with the creation of new knowledge and helps in the transition between tacit and explicit knowledge (Nonaka, Toyama & Konno, 2000). Purpose: The main aim of this work is for Sonae MC to be able to differentiate regarding its suppliers by being able to create knowledge partnerships. Methods: The methodology used in this study starts with an analysis of the type of equipment demanded and which suppliers are the biggest, more flexible and more willing to cooperate. Then, after interviewing the suppliers, we are able to list the knowledge that they are looking for and create a possible knowledge management model, where both parts get involved. Results: What the suppliers are looking for can be integrated on the knowledge creation spiral of Sonae MC. However, it has not been done until now due to confidentiality issues and the immense number of available competing suppliers that Sonae benefits from. Conclusion: Throughout this analysis it can be seen that there is room to cooperate with the suppliers and to improve their services by involving them in the decision planning operations and by giving them access to non-public information.

Abstract People makes mistakes, either the poor quality product might be created occasionally from a factory or a service failure was probably provided to customers, those defects caused customer’s negative impression on a firm as well to a brand. However a good recovery can turn customer’s angry, frustration into loyalty, so as to create a better goodwill, since a well-executed service recovery is important for enhancing customer satisfaction, building customer relationships, and preventing customer defections (Fornell and Wernerfelt, 1987). An importance as a brand in the market of industrial equipments, that is never inferior to the general market of consuming products. Customer makes up purchased decision depending upon their existing impression on a brand; therefore firm should establish a brand awareness with peace of mind and trustworthy by implementation of appropriate marketing strategy, Superior marketing must be Relevant, Distinctive, Consistent, Cohesive and Creative, and this leads to superior customer awareness, preference and buying action (Webster and Keller, 2004). Particularly to the industrial equipment suppliers, who is limited by their insufficient budget and resources to implement the Ad. via public media, due to the tiny revenue and capital scale. For getting rid of such a predicament, this study explored several practical operation strategies which could recover a suffered multinational brand from her stalemate by negative customer impression, consequently strengthen her market position and proceed to increase the market share. These strategies are: Innovative product improvements, Extend warranty programs, Praise from customers, Marketing activities on communication and Commitment from employees, As a result of this study, 204 respondents’ questionnaire data were examined and analyzed by employing the statistic tool, those proposed strategies were hypothesized to be tested, confirmed and harvested with their positive and effective results when they were integrated implementation. These have concluded a consolidate resolution that could be referred and adopted by the multinational equipment manufacturer’s marketer, help them to handle a recovered program while any defected circumstance or create a structure that have well preparation for crisis management.

The equipment industry is the basis of all industries. The capital investment of the semiconductor accounts for 17~24% of the gross product which it created. Every advanced country regards the equipment industry as a necessity for the development of the semiconductor industry. Governments support this industry with their policy, which guides the development of the semiconductor market and the key technique in order to acquire the competitive advantage as well as the leading position of this industry. This target of the research is the global top 15 semiconductor equipment suppliers, gathering the financial information of each supplier from 2002 to 2006. The evaluation index is based on the following factors: size, growth, profit, efficiency and risk. The grey relation model of multiple objective decision-making is harnessed to do the analysis and prioritize with a view to comparing the competitiveness among the suppliers. The objective Grey Relation Model analysis reveals the niche of semiconductor industry is transnational organization, harnessing diversification operating strategies to enlarge revenue, fight for higher market share, and beef up competitiveness. Without a doubt, professional leading brands as well as relentless R&D are nothing but the approach to generating high margins and maintaining competitive edges. In terms of research and development, the U.S. is still dominating the development of key techniques in the field of semiconductor industry and holding the leading position. Given management strategies, American corporations put emphasis on margins, growing revenue and risk control. Instead, Japanese tend to expand its shares through stable and steady management.

Jangsombatsiri, Witaya. « An artificial neural network approach to laser-based direct part marking of data matrix symbols ». Thesis, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/31157.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Certain applications have recently appeared in industry where a traditional bar code printed on a label will not survive because the item to be tracked has to be exposed to harsh environments. Laser direct-part marking is a manufacturing process used to create permanent marks on a substrate that could help to alleviate this problem. In this research, a 532 nm laser was utilized to create a direct-part marked Data Matrix symbol onto carbon steel substrates with different carbon content. The quality of the laser marked Data Matrix symbol was then evaluated according to the criteria outlined in the ISO/IEC 16022 bar code technology specification for Data Matrix. Several experiments were conducted to explore the effects that different parameters have on the quality of the laser direct-part marked symbols. First, an experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of two different laser tool path patterns. In later experiments, parameters such as type of carbon steel, percent of laser tool path overlap, profile speed, average power and frequency were found to have significant effects on the quality of laser direct-part marked Data Matrix symbols. The analysis of the results indicated that contrast and print growth were the critical standard performance measures that limited laser direct-part marked Data Matrix symbols from achieving a higher final grade. No significant effects were found with respect to other standard performance measures (i.e., encode, axial uniformity, and unused error correction). Next, the experimental data collected for contrast and print growth was utilized as training, validation and testing data sets in the modeling of artificial neural networks for the laser direct-part marking process. Two performance measures (i.e., mean squared error and correlation coefficient) were employed to assess the performance of the artificial neural network models. Single-output artificial neural network models corresponding to a specific performance measure were found to have good learning and predicting capabilities. The single-output artificial neural network models were compared to equivalent multiple linear regression models for validation purposes. The prediction capability of the single-output artificial neural network models with respect to laser direct-part marking of Data Matrix symbols on carbon steel substrates was superior to that of the multiple linear regression models.

There are two process operations in the sugar factory that directly affect the recovery of sugar from evaporated syrup, namely crystallisation (boiling) and centrifugal operation. Successful automation of the vacuum pans (boiling) has been implemented using brix (total dissolved solids) control, but to date on-line measurement of continuous centrifugal performance has not been successfully accomplished in South Africa. The purpose of this investigation was to continue the preliminary work performed by Tongaat Hulett Sugar in developing a purity meter for the measurement of sugar purity (sucrose content) in a continuous centrifugal. This instrument would provide the centrifugal operator with a reliable tool to perform on-line measurement of sugar purity and would also facilitate the automation of the centrifugal
