Résumé :
In this paper we used developed theoretical model earlier (called “two-component”) for numerical calculation of temperature dependencies of equilibrium ELC layer thickness hs(T), its specific heat Cp(T) and latent molar heat of phase transition ELC-bulk liquid q(T) with further comparison with experiment. This model postulates the existence of both monomers and dimers in the wall-adjacent layer, and the appearance of ELC layer is caused by the orientational interaction between these liquid particles and the solid substrate. The calculations were compared with results of experimental investigation of thin nitrobenzene interlayer symmetrically bounded by quartz substrates.

Résumé :
The proposed model of the structure of the wall-adjacent epitropic liquid crystalline layer considers it as an oligomeric system of thread-like associates in a non-associated liquid. The results of ELC studies of layers of aliphatic hydrocarbon - n-hexadecane are analyzed. The study of the ELC phase in n-alkanes is important both for the modification of the quantitative physical theory of this phenomenon, and in a practical sense, as it allows to solve practical problems related to the control of boundary friction in mechanisms and parts of machines. Previously, the results of rheological and structural-optical studies of the properties of these systems were considered separately, and the results obtained in the molecular-statistical model were not correlated in detail with the results of rheological measurements for the case of overlapped near-surface layers. To interpret the results of studies (by rheological and optical methods) of such a layer in interlayers of n-hexadecane, symmetrically limited by conductive substrates, it is proposed to take into account the increase in the concentration of the ordered component ("pile") under the condition that the wall layers of epitropic liquid crystals in the interlayer overlap. It will also allow to take into account the results obtained in the molecular statistical model in the processing of rheological data.

Résumé :
The temperature dependences of the structural characteristics of the quasi-liquidcrystalline n-hexadecane layers − their equilibrium thickness and the degree of orientational order were determined by such optical methods as measurements of admixture dichroism and the anisotropy of heterophase interlayers. The values of these epitropic liquid-crystalline layer parameters were compared with those established earlier in rheological experiments.

Jhd. v. Chr.).

Résumé :
The lubricating characteristics of ultrathin interlayers of bio-oil RMO made from coastal algae P.Moriformis are investigated in this work. One of the most important qualities of the oil is its lubricity of the friction surfaces. It determines the possibility of formation of a stable separating film between contact surfaces, with orientational ordering in wall adjacent layers, with the strength value required in the boundary friction regime. The structural characteristics of such epitropic-liquid crystal (ELC) layers are essential when choosing a lubricant. Static friction pair was studied by the optical method of admixtured absorption dichroism. It was found that the value of the order parameter of ELC layer and its equilibrium thickness are much higher in compare with the layers of aliphatic hydrocarbons, which are the basis of modern mineral lubricants. The rheological characteristics of ultrathin interlayers were studied in a dynamic triad of friction. Processing of the effective viscosity coefficient dependence on the shear rate, interlayer thickness and temperature allowed us to estimate the value of equilibrium thickness of the ELC layer, which coincides with the results of optical measurements. The marked structural peculiarities of the ELC in the biooil interlayers are conditioned with the formation of molecular associates of oleic acid, which is the main component of studied oil.

Résumé :
e11527 Background: 118 Her2 positive invasive carcinomas were retested centrally at the Mayo Clinic for Her2 status confirmation prior to inclusion in Mayo Clinic Cancer Research Consortium study RC0639 phase II study of cardiac safety and tolerability of adjuvant chemotherapy plus trastuzumab with lapatinib for resected Her2+ breast cancer (MCCRC RC0639). Methods: Central confirmatory methods were immunohistochemical (IHC) Dako HercepTest on a Dako Autostainer using the manufacturer's recommendations and HercepTest kit epitrope retrieval kit and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) using Vysis PathVysion probe kit. Test results are interpreted using ASCO/CAP guidelines (IHC >30%, Her2:CEP 17 ratio >2.2). Results: There is local and central test 3+ IHC concordance in 48 of 53 tumors (agreement 90.6%) and FISH amplification in 29 of 33 tumors (agreement 87.9%), improved or similar results using identical methods to results in NCCTG N9831 adjuvant trial (n=1063, 81.6% IHC; n=813, 88.1% FISH). Of 92 centrally tested 3+ IHC positive tumors, 88 (95.7%) were FISH amplified. 5 centrally tested patients interpreted as Her2 positive by pre-ASCO/CAP guidelines (IHC >10%; HER2:CEP17 ratio >2) are Her2 ineligible using ASCO/CAP guidelines. IHC not confirmed centrally was reviewed by a second pathologist in 16 of 118 specimens. IHC concordance between two central pathologists was 10/16 (62.5%) in negative or equivocal (≤30% IHC staining) specimens; 7/10 (70%) with two reader agreement were FISH amplified and 4/6 (66%) with disagreement were FISH amplified. Conclusions: Concordance in IHC and FISH results between local and central labs is similar or improved since N9831. New ASCO/CAP Her2 testing guidelines change eligibility based on Her2 status in 4.2 % of patients. Equivocal IHC results falling between pre- and post- ASCO/CAP IHC positive thresholds (>10% and <30% IHC strong staining) are only partially resolved by repeat IHC review and/or FISH testing. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Résumé :
The tribo-induced effect of increasing the antifriction properties of lubricants with the combined use of cholesterol compounds and oil-soluble complexones is considered. It was found that the formation of boundary films is due to the following processes: the formation of complex compounds between ethanolamines and iron ions of the surface oxide film; removal of complexes from the friction surface; the interaction of the base of the lubricant with unoxidized iron; the formation of epitropic structured layers with cholesterol esters.

Résumé :
This paper considers a network of agents who trade indivisible goods or services via bilateral contracts. Under a substitutability assumption on preferences, it is known that a competitive equilibrium exists. In “Competitive Equilibrium and Trading Networks: A Network Flow Approach,” Candogan, Epitropou, and Vohra show how to determine equilibrium outcomes as a generalized submodular flow problem. Existence of a competitive equilibrium and its equivalence to seemingly weaker notions of stability follow directly from the optimality conditions of the flow problem. The formulation enables the authors to perform comparative statics with respect to the number of buyers, sellers, and trades. In particular, they are able to shed light on the impact of new trading opportunities on the equilibrium trades, prices, and surpluses. In addition, they present algorithms for finding competitive equilibria in trading networks and testing stability.

The horos was reported to Hiller von Gaertringer in June 1930 by Franz Gabriel Welter, engaged in excavations during the 1920s in the areas of Hyria and Livadi (Naxos). The document is remarkable for the definition of the concept of apotimema, the estimated value of properties given as security for the lease of property of a subject protected by the eponymous archon (orphans, widows and epikleroi). In this specific case, we have a pupillary apotimema: lands and the house, with the tiled roof, valued and placed as apotimema for the goods capitalised by the epitropos of Epiphron’s children. The capital loaned is 3,500 drachmas and the children would have obtained 400 drachmas as annual interest. Among the land pledged to guarantee the sum, the possessions in the localities of Elaious and Melanes are also mentioned, the latter’s toponym still in use for the village that is located in the north-central area of the island of Nassia.

Résumé :
AbstractWe continue our exploration of thermodynamics at long observational timescales, “slow time,” by including turbulent dynamics leading to a condition of fluctuating local equilibrium. Averaging these fluctuations in wind speed and temperature results in a velocity distribution with heavy tails which, however, are necessarily truncated at some large molecular speed preserving all moments of the velocity distribution including the energy. This leads to an expression for the ideal gas law in slow time which as its core has the superficially familiar term \frac{3}{2}Nk\theta in addition to a term accounting for the large-scale fluctuations, which is also proportional to the particle number N; θ is a new temperature including thermalization of wind. The traditional temperature T no longer exists. Likewise, the additional energy term necessitates a new quantity that parallels entropy in the sense that it captures hidden degrees of freedom. Like entropy, it captures physical properties manifesting indirectly, but on scales larger than the familiar laboratory scales. We call this quantity epitropy.

TC, Campbell. « Nutritional Renaissance and Public Health Policy ». Journal of Nutritional Biology 3, no 1 (11 octobre 2017). http://dx.doi.org/10.18314/jnb.v3i1.145.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The science of nutrition has long been entrapped in reductionist interpretation of details, a source of great confusion. However, if nutrition is defined as the integration of countless nutrient factors, metabolic reactions and outcomes, biologically orchestrated as in symphony, its relevance for personal and public health would be less confusing and more productive. This more wholistic interpretation may be observed at the cellular and physiological levels and may be described, in part, by the concept of pleiotropy (multiple cell-based effects from one nutrient source), together with its more expansive cousin, epitropy (multiple cell-based effects from multiple nutrients). First, wholistic interpretation helps to explain the profound but little-known health benefits of whole plant-based foods (not vegan or vegetarian) when compared with whole animal-based foods and/or with the nutritionally variable convenience foods (generally high in fat, salt, refined carbohydrates and low in complex carbohydrates). Second, wholistic interpretation explains why the U.S. Dietary Guidelines and related public policies, which are primarily conceived from reductionist reasoning, serve political agendas so effectively. If diet and health advisories were to acknowledge the biological complexity of nutrition, then make greater use of deductive (top down) instead of inductive (bottom up) reasoning, there would be less confusion. Third, wholistic nutrition, if acknowledged, could greatly help to resolve the highlypolarized, virtually intractable political debate on health care. And fourth, this definition tells why nutrition is rarely if ever offered in medical school training, is not one of the 130 or so medical specialties, and does not have a dedicated research institute at U.S. National Institutes of Health. Nutrition is a wholistic science whereas medical practice is reductionist, a serious mismatch that causes biased judgement of nutrition. But this dichotomy would not existif the medical practice profession were to understand and adopt wholistic interpretation. Reductionist research, however, is crucially important because its findings provide the granular structure for wholistic interpretation—thesetwo philosophies are inescapably interdependent. Evidence obtained in this manner lends strong support to the suggestion that nutrition is more efficacious and far more affordable in maintaining and restoring (treating) health than all the pills and procedures combined. Admittedly, this is a challenging paradigm for the domain of medical science itself.
