Tra le figure più importanti del dibattito filosofico italiano del Novecento, Antonio Banfi ha svolto nell'Italia del secondo dopoguerra anche un ruolo politico di rilievo come senatore del PCI. La sua interpretazione del marxismo ha presentato una forte accentuazione umanistica. Tra i suoi scolari filosofi e storici della filosofia come Giulio Preti, Enzo Paci, Remo Cantoni, Paolo Rossi. Il saggio prende in esame la prima fase della riflessione filosofica di Banfi, nella quale ha una importanza decisiva la conoscenza diretta del dibattito tedesco tra le due guerre mondiali, in primo luogo della fenomenologia di Husserl e della ontologia di N. Hartmann. I Principi di una teoria della ragione - libro apparso alla fine degli anni '20 - e poi una serie di incisivi saggi degli anni '30 documentano una conoscenza approfondita e critica di un dibattito di cui mostrerà di nutrirsi in misura decisiva l'interpretazione di Banfi non solo di Hegel, ma anche di Marx.

Aim: pH-sensitive liposomes (pSL) have emerged as promising nanocarriers due to their endo/lysosome-escape abilities, however, their pH sensitivity is compromised by poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) coating. This study investigates whether an intracellular PEG-detachment strategy can overcome this PEG dilemma. Materials & methods: First, PEG2000 was conjugated with a phospholipid via an acid-labile hydrazide–hydrazone bond (–CO–NH–N = CH–), which was postinserted into pSL, forming PEG-cleavable pSL (CL-PEG-pSL). Their endo/lysosomal-escape abilities in MIA PaCa-2 cells, pharmacokinetics and tumor accumulation abilities were studied using PEG-pSL as reference. Results: CL-PEG-pSL showed rapid endo/lysosome-escape abilities in the cancer cells and higher tumor accumulation in MIA PaCa-2 xenograft model in contrast to PEG-pSL. Conclusion: Cleavable PEGylation is an efficient strategy to ameliorate the PEG dilemma of pSL for cancer drug delivery.

Abstract Group 6 metal (Cr, Mo, W) carbonyl complexes react with cyclo-(P5Ph5) to afford the phosphorus-rich complexes [Cr(CO)5{cyclo-(P5Ph5)-κP1}] (1), [{Cr(CO)5}2{μ-cyclo-(P5Ph5)-κP1,P3}] (2), [M(CO)4{cyclo-(P5Ph5)-κP1,P3}] (with M=Cr (3), Mo (4), W (exo-5, endo-5)) depending on the reaction conditions. Complexes 1–5 were characterised by 31P{1H} NMR and IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, and X-ray crystallography. The cyclopentaphosphane remains intact and acts as monodentate (1), bridging (2) or bidentate (3–5) ligand. Compounds exo-5 and endo-5 are configurational isomers and essentially differ in the orientations adopted by the phenyl rings attached to the uncoordinated phosphorus atoms. The 31P{1H} NMR spectra show five multiplets for an ABCDE spin system. Theoretical calculations showed that exo-5 and endo-5 are practically isoenergetic, which is in good agreement with the observed equilibrium in solution between exo-5 and endo-5. The thermal properties of the complexes have also been evaluated.

The title compound 1-OPBB, C19H19BrO2, contains a dechlorinated and hydrogenated isodrin backbone with ananti-4-bromobenzoate substituent at one of the methano bridges. The dihedral angle between the CO2ester plane and the benzene ring plane is 8.5 (2)°. In the crystal, the ester groups stack over benzene rings: the molecules pack as conformational enantiomers, with nearest parallel benzene ring planes separated by a perpendicular distance of 3.339 (1) Å. The nearest benzene-ring centroids are 5.266 (1) Å apart. Possible structural correlation with enhanced solvolytic reactivity is investigated.

The impacts of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the northwest Pacific (NWP) climate during ENSO decay summers are investigated based on the outputs of 37 coupled general circulation models (CGCMs) from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5). Large intermodel spread exists in the 37 state-of-the-art CGCMs in simulating the ENSO–NWP relationship. Eight high-skill and eight low-skill models are selected to explore how the bias arises. By comparing the results among high-skill models, low-skill models, and observations, the simulation skill of the ENSO–NWP relationship largely depends on whether the model can reasonably reproduce the ENSO decay pace. Warm SST anomaly bias in the equatorial western Pacific (EWP) is found to persist into the ENSO decay summer in the low-skill models, obstructing the formation of an anomalous anticyclone in the NWP. Further analysis shows that the warm EWP SST anomaly bias is possibly related to the excessive westward extension of cold tongue in these models, which increases climatological zonal SST gradient in the EWP. Under westerly wind anomalies, the larger climatological zonal SST gradient could lead to warmer zonal advections in the low-skill models than that in the high-skill models, which could lead to warm EWP SST anomaly bias in the low-skill models. And the warm EWP SST anomaly bias could strengthen westerly wind anomalies over the western Pacific by triggering convection and atmospheric Rossby waves, which, in turn, could maintain the warm SST anomaly bias in the EWP.

The synthetic application of endohexosaminidase enzymes (e.g., Endo A, Endo M, Endo D) promises to allow ready access to a wide variety of defined homogeneous glycoproteins and glycopeptides. The use ofN-glycan oligosaccharides that are activated at the reducing terminus as oxazolines allows their high-yielding attachment to almost any amino acid, peptide, or protein that contains a GlcNAc residue as an acceptor. A wide variety of oxazoline donors are readily available, either by total synthesis or by isolation of the corresponding oligosaccharide from natural sources and then conversion to the oxazoline in water. The synthetic potential of the enzymes is particularly augmented by the production of mutant glycosynthases, the use of which allows the synthesis of a wide variety of glycopeptides and glycoproteins bearing defined homogeneousN-glycan structures.

Uterine inflammation is a common pathology in animals, leading to disturbances in reproductive processes and reduced production profitability. Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP) effects at the uterine level during inflammation are not known. In the current study, we analyzed the relative PACAP type 1 receptor (PAC1R) mRNA transcript and protein abundances in the myometrium (MYO), as well s PACAP and PAC1R involvement in the contractile function of inflamed pig uterus. To that end, E. coli suspension (E. coli group) or saline (SAL group) was injected into the uterine horns or laparotomy was performed (CON group). Eight days after the bacteria injections, severe acute endometritis and a reduced relative abundance of PAC1R protein in the MYO were observed. Compared to the period before PACAP in vitro administration, PACAP (10−7 M) in the CON and SAL groups decreased in amplitude in the MYO and endometrium (ENDO)/MYO, whereas in the E. coli group, increased amplitude in the MYO and reduced amplitude in the ENDO/MYO were observed. In the E. coli group, PACAP enhanced the amplitude in the MYO (10−7 M) and decreased the amplitude in the ENDO/MYO (10−8 M) compared with other groups. PACAP (10−7 M) increased the frequency of both kinds of strips in the CON and SAL groups compared with the pretreatment period. PACAP (both doses) did not significantly change the frequency in the E. coli group, whereas in response to PACAP (10−7 M), the frequency was reduced compared to other groups. In the MYO, PAC1R antagonist decreased the amplitude reduction (CON and SAL groups) and reversed a rise in PACAP (10−7 M)-evoked amplitude (E. coli group). PAC1R blocking reversed (MYO) and abolished (ENDO/MYO) the stimulatory effect of PACAP (10−7 M) on the frequency (CON and SAL groups). PAC1R antagonist and PACAP (10−7 M) evoked the appearance of frequency depression in both kinds of strips (E. coli group). In summary, in pigs, severe acute endometritis reduces the relative abundance of PAC1R protein in the MYO, and PAC1R mediates the influence of PACAP on inflamed uterus contractility.

ABSTRACTBefore Shackleton arrived at South Georgia aboard Endurance on 5 November 1914 he was aware that the vessel might meet bad pack-ice in the Weddell Sea. This had been forecast on the basis of climate analysis by Robert Mossman, the meteorologist on the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition (1902–1904), who was currently working at the Argentine Meteorological Office. Mossman was interested in teleconnections linking meteorological and oceanic conditions in widely separated places and had studied the links between the Weddell Sea and South America. Mossman's Antarctic data were mainly records from the Orcadas station in the South Orkneys which had operated continuously from 1903. He found a correlation between extensive pack-ice in the Weddell Sea and plentiful rain in a belt across South America that included Buenos Aires. The experiences of Endurance supported this. Modern studies of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) broadly confirm Mossman's conclusions.

Overall, this sequence proceeds with efficient center-to-axis-to-center chirality transfer.

: To evaluate and compare the effect of two approaches of cryotherapy for improving the success rate of Inferior alveolar nerve block and reduction of pain during access opening in mandibular molars with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis. : Thirty patients diagnosed with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria to participate in the study. 3 groups were designed; Group 1(Control group) - inferior alveolar nerve block(IANB) with lignocaine (2%) adrenaline (1:80000), Group 2(IANB+ small ice pack)-inferior alveolar nerve block with lignocaine (2%) adrenaline (1:80000) + small ice packs (wrapped in sterile gauze); Group 3 (IANB+Endo Ice) -inferior alveolar nerve block with lignocaine (2%) adrenaline (1:80000) + Endo Ice application. Patients were randomly allocated to any one of the groups: The level of preoperative pain was recorded using the Numeric visual analogue scale (VAS). Endodontic therapy was done 15 minutes after the IANB injection. The level of intra operative pain during access opening was recorded again using the same scale. If the patients reported moderate or severe pain during the procedure, the IANB was defined as “unsuccessful,” and a supplementary injection was administered.: There was statistically significant difference found in pain reduction among 3 groups (p=0.01). Post hoc analysis revealed significant difference between Group 1(Control) and Group 2(IANB+ small ice pack) with (p=0.003). Overall success rate of IANB was found to be 66.66 %. : Both the techniques of intraoral cryotherapy exhibited improved pain reduction as well as increased the success rate of IANBs in mandibular molar teeth with SIP. Hence based on the results obtained, it is suggested that cryotherapy can serve as a useful adjunct to anaesthesia during endodontic procedures.

Abstract Different multicomponent 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions (1,3-DC) of cyclic α-amino acid derivatives with aldehydes and dipolarophiles have been described as efficient and simple methodologies for the synthesis of the pyrrolidine unit of pyrrolizidines and indolizidines. When free cyclic α-amino acids are used, a thermal promoted decarboxylative process generates in situ the corresponding non-stabilized azomethine ylides, which afforded the corresponding pyrrolizidines and indolizidines with a hydrogen in the bicyclic units. This methodology has been employed to the synthesis of complex systems including spiro derivatives when ketones are used as carbonyl component. In addition, working with cyclic α-amino acid derived esters, the three-component 1,3-DC takes place under milder reaction conditions giving the corresponding pyrrolizidines and indolizidines with an alkoxycarbonyl group in the bridge adjacent carbon to the nitrogen. This methodology can be carried out by a double consecutive or stepwise 1,3-DC to provide pyrrolizidines via the precursor prolinates. The conformation of the azomethine ylide controls the endo/exo diastereoselectivity of the 1,3-DC.

O retorno do Talibã ao poder no Afeganistão após vinte anos de sua erradicação pelas forças estadunidenses e da Organização das Nações Unidas trouxe consigo à tona, novamente, os debates a respeito das “leis islâmicas” e da sharia, por meio da qual ditamente os direitos humanos e a democracia estariam sob ameaça. O presente trabalho parte das inquietações do autor a respeito da compatibilidade do Islam com a democracia e tem por objetivo a exploração do tema da relação do Islam com a democracia nas suas bases históricas e da sharia. O estudo foi elaborado a partir de uma pesquisa bibliográfica baseada em textos da exegese do Alcorão e dados da História Islâmica a respeito de seus primórdios no exemplo da cidade-estado de Medina – apresentada por Enzo Pace no livro Sociologia do islã: fenômenos religiosos e lógicas sociais, publicado em 2005 – como a comunidade ideal dos muçulmanos. Conclui-se, a partir do exemplo adotado, que há uma compatibilidade entre o Islam e a democracia, assim como se constata que a sharia, diferente do que se pensa, não é um conjunto de leis, mas um conjunto de valores e princípios que inclui relação política também.

Pancreatic cancer has higher incidence and mortality rates worldwide. PW06 [(E)-3-(9-ethyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)-1-(2,5-dimethoxyphenyl) prop-2-en-1-one] is a carbazole derivative containing chalcone moiety which was designed for inhibiting tumorigenesis in human pancreatic cancer. This study is aimed at investigating PW06-induced anticancer effects in human pancreatic cancer MIA PaCa-2 cells in vitro. The results showed PW06 potent antiproliferative/cytotoxic activities and induced cell morphological changes in a human pancreatic cancer cell line (MIA PaCa-2), and these effects are concentration-dependent (IC50 is 0.43 μM). Annexin V and DAPI staining assays indicated that PW06 induced apoptotic cell death and DNA condensation. Western blotting indicated that PW06 increased the proapoptotic proteins such as Bak and Bad but decreased the antiapoptotic protein such as Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL. Moreover, PW06 increased the active form of caspase-8, caspase-9, and caspase-3, PARP, releasing cytochrome c, AIF, and Endo G from mitochondria in MIA PaCa-2 cells. Confocal laser microscopy assay also confirmed that PW06 increased Bak and decreased Bcl-xL. Also, the cells were pretreated with inhibitors of caspase-3, caspase-8, and caspase-9 and then were treated with PW06, resulting in increased viable cell number compared to PW06 treated only. Furthermore, PW06 showed a potent binding ability with hydrophobic interactions in the core site of the Fas-Fas death domains (FADD). In conclusion, PW06 can potent binding ability to the Fas-FADD which led to antiproliferative, cytotoxic activities, and apoptosis induction accompanied by the caspase-dependent and mitochondria-dependent pathways in human pancreatic cancer MIA PaCa-2 cells.

The structure of a salt of diprotonatedendo-3-aminotropane crystallized with a copper(II) anionic cluster is reported,viz.(C8H18N2)[CuCl3(NO3)(H2O)]. Neither ion in the salt has been structurally characterized previously. In the crystal, the ions pack together to form a three-dimensional structure held together by a network of intermolecular N—H...O, O—H...Cl and N—H...Cl hydrogen-bonding interactions. Selective crystallization of the title compound can be considered as a simple method for the separation of theexoandendoisomers of 3-aminotropane.

For many years, despite a rich coordination chemistry, gold (Au) was judged as being catalytically inactive for the formation of carbon–carbon bonds. In mid-1970, few reports demonstrated that Au salts could be very useful reagents to catalyze organic transformations. In recent years, homogeneous catalysis by Au has received considerable attention by the scientific community. It was shown that Au(I) or (III) catalysts are specific and more reactive than most of the other soft Lewis acids such as Hg(II), Cu(II), Pt(II), and Pd(II). Taking advantage of the affinity of cationic phosphine Au complexes to triple bonds, we conceived a Au(I)-catalyzed 6-endo-dig cyclization of cyclic enol ether to prepare bridged and fused bicyclic ketone. Keeping in mind that 5-exo-dig cyclizations can be a competitive process, we surveyed various Au(I) complexes.

O comportamento alimentar das crianças tem sido foco de preocupação científica e do estabelecimento de novas políticas públicas. Embora a terapia analítico-comportamental infantil seja profícua na produção de literatura, publicações envolvendo estratégias interven- tivas do comportamento alimentar infantil são escassas. O presente trabalho objetiva opera- cionalizar o que a literatura nutricional e médica tem denominado como comportamentos alimentar adequado e inadequado, elencando seus contextos antecedentes e consequentes mais típicos, assim como levantar hipóteses acerca de possíveis estratégias terapêuticas. Para tanto, as autoras se valeram de um programa nacional de televisão que se propõe a tratar dificuldades alimentares infantis como material de análise, interpretação e exemplificação de como o robusto corpo conceitual analítico-comportamental pode servir como base para futuras intervenções nas diversas áreas da saúde infantil como a psicologia, nutrição, endo- crinologia e pediatria. Foram elencados e discutidos recortes do programa, a partir dos quais, estratégias de intervenção pautadas em princípios básicos do comportamento foram discu- tidas. Sugere-se que estudos futuros se debrucem sobre a operacionalização do repertório do terapeuta encarregado de implementar as estratégias de intervenção do comportamento alimentar infantil.

For efficient and profitable crop production, appropriate weed management is essential. Today, herbicides are an integral part of modern farming practice globally, as they assure the convenient method of weed control chemically. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs, EC.2.5.1.18) are a superfamily of multifunctional enzymes that detoxify endo- and xeno-biotic compounds by conjugating glutathione (GSH) to a hydrophobic substrate. Plant GSTs have been a focus of attention because of their roles in herbicide detoxification and environmental safety. In this study, the application of herbicide called tribenuron-methyl to the cultivars of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Izgi-2001, Triticum aestivum L. cv. Alpu-2001) and barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Bilgi-91, Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Kalayci-97) caused an increase in GST activities of both in roots and shoots. Total GSH and protein contents were also determined for all above-mentioned plants. As a conclusion, our results indicate that depending on the herbicide itself, treatment conditions and the origin of the plant, tribenuron-methyl had an effect on the parameters measured in this study, including the GST activities and synthesis of GSH. The maximum increase in enzyme activity was observed in herbicide-treated Triticum aestivum L. cv. Izgi-2001 roots: 192 % of control with a tribenuron-methyl concentration of 1.5 M. However, further investigations are needed to elucidate the presence of specific tribenuron-methyl GST isozymes in this plant.

Abstract Peptide histidine isoleucine (PHI), peptide histidine valine (PHV), and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) are cosynthesized from the same precursor and share high levels of structural similarities with overlapping biological functions. In this study, the first PHI/PHV receptor was isolated and characterized in goldfish. To study this receptor using homologous peptides, we have also characterized the goldfish prepro-PHI/VIP, and, surprisingly, a shorter transcript lacking the VIP coding region was isolated. A PHI/VIP precursor without the VIP coding sequence has never before been reported. Initial functional expression of the PHI/PHV receptor in Chinese hamster ovary cells revealed that it could be activated by human PHV [50% effective concentration (EC50): 43 nm] and to a lesser extent human PHI (EC50: 133 nm) and helodermin (EC50: 166 nm) but not fish and mammalian pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptides and VIPs. Subsequent studies indicated that, similar to the pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide receptors (PAC1-R, VPAC1-R, and VPAC2-R), the receptor isolated in this study is able to interact with goldfish PHI and its C-terminally extended form, PHV with EC50 values 93 and 43 nm, respectively. Northern blot and RT-PCR/Southern blot analyses revealed that the PHI/VIP gene is expressed in the intestine, brain, and gall bladder and the PHI/PHV receptor gene is primarily expressed in the pituitary and to a lesser extend in the intestine and gall bladder, suggesting that PHI/PHV may play a role, notably in the regulation of pituitary function. In conclusion, our results demonstrate for the first time the existence of a PHI/PHV receptor, indicating that the functions of PHI and PHV could be mediated by their own receptor in addition to VIP receptors.

Abstract Ten years (1994–2004) of measurements of tropical upper-tropospheric water vapor (UTWV) by the Measurement of Ozone and Water Vapor by Airbus In-Service Aircraft (MOZAIC) are investigated over three regions—the tropical Atlantic, tropical Africa, and the Asian monsoon region—to determine the UTWV climatology and variability on multiple scales and to understand them in relation to moisture transport and deep convection. The seasonal migration of upper-tropospheric humidity (UTH) keeps pace with that of the ITCZ, indicating the convective influence on UTH distribution. Some significant regional differences are identified with the tropical Africa and the Asian monsoon regions being moister than the tropical Atlantic. UTH generally increases with height by 10%–20% relative humidity with respect to ice (RHi) from about 300 to 200 hPa, and the differences are larger in the deep Tropics than in the subtropics. The probability density functions of tropical UTH are often bimodal. The two modes stay rather constant; differences in the mean value are largely due to the variations in the proportion of the two modes as opposed to changes in the modes themselves. In the deep Tropics, the moisture level frequently reaches ice supersaturation, the most notable case being the near-equatorial Asian monsoon region during the wet season when ice supersaturation is observed 46% of the time. Interannual variations are observed in association with the 1997–98 ENSO event. A warming of about 1–2 K is observed for all three regions equatorward of roughly 15°. Specific humidity also increases somewhat for the tropical Atlantic and tropical Africa, but the increase in temperature outweighs the increase in specific humidity such that RH decreases by 5%–15% RHi. In addition to the ENSO-related variation, MOZAIC also sees increases in both RH and specific humidity over tropical Africa from 2000 onward. Moisture fluxes are computed from MOZAIC data and decomposed into contributions from the mean circulation and from eddies. The flux divergence, which represents the moisture source/sink from horizontal transport, is also estimated. Finally, the MOZAIC climatology and variability are revisited in relation to deep convection obtained from the International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP).

How variations in Earth’s orbit pace the glacial-interglacial cycles of the Quaternary are probably one of the greatest mysteries of modern climate science. These changes in the forcing are too small to explain the observed climate variations as simple linear responses. Consequently, to strictly apply the Milankovitch’s theory, a mediator involving positive feedbacks must be found, endowing the climate response with a resonant feature. This mediation should help explain the Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT) by involving orbital variations as the only external forcing, contrary to the current theory that supposes the coevolution of climate, ice sheets, and carbon cycle over the past 3 million years. Supported by both observational and theoretical considerations, recent work shows that long-period Rossby waves winding around subtropical ocean gyres meet the requirements of the sought mediator. Propagating cyclonically around the subtropical gyres, the so-called Gyral Rossby waves (GRWs) owe their origin to the gradient β of the Coriolis parameter relative to the mean radius of the gyres. The resulting modulated western boundary current, whose velocity is added to that of the steady anticyclonic wind-driven current, accelerates/decelerates according to the phase of GRWs. This amplifies the oscillation of the thermocline because of a positive feedback loop ensuing from the temperature gradient between the high and low latitudes of the gyres. Multi-frequency GRWs overlap, behaving as coupled oscillators with inertia resonantly forced by solar and orbital cycles in subharmonic modes. So, the efficiency of forcing increases considerably as the forcing period approaches a natural period of the GRWs. Taking advantage of (1) the alkenone paleothermometer in sediment cores sampled in the Tasman Sea floor, we show that, in the same way as during the MPT, but with periods 10 times longer, a transition occurred at the hinge of Pliocene-Pleistocene. Both transitions as well as the observed adjustment of the South Pacific gyre to the resonance conditions during the MPT are explained from orbital forcing alone—(2) data set of individual Globigerinoides ruberδO 18 spanning the Holocene and the Last Glacial Maximum from sediment core in the eastern equatorial Pacific, we show how the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) activity is modulated according to subharmonic modes. Periods of warming induce a decrease in ENSO activity while periods of cooling induce an increase.

Abstract Aims The study aims to describe the long-term outcome of radiofrequency catheter ablation for ventricular tachycardia (VT) in a large cohort arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) patients. Methods and results Radiofrequency catheter ablation was performed in 284 ARVC patients due to VT between July 2000 and January 2019. An endocardial approach was used initially, with epicardial ablation procedures reserved for those patients who failed an endocardial ablation. Activation, entrainment, pace and substrate mapping strategies were used with regional ablation applied. A total of 393 ablation procedures were performed including endocardial approach only (n = 377) and endo and epicardial combined (n = 16). Right ventricular basal free wall was accounted as the primary substrate of VT in 258 (65.6%) patients. There were 81 patients underwent redo ablation procedure (second time = 81; ≥3 times = 28). New targets were observed in 68.8% of redo procedures. There were 171 VT recurrences and 19 deaths occurred during the follow-up. Ventricular tachycardia-free survival rate of the first, second, and last ablation procedure was 56.7%, 73.2%, and 78.1%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed ≥3 induced VTs in the procedure was correlated with rehospitalized VT recurrence [hazard ratio (HR) 1.467, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.052–2.046; P = 0.024]. For all-cause mortality, rehospitalized VT and ≥3 induced VTs were the independent risk factors (HR 2.954, 95% CI 1.8068.038; P = 0.034; HR 3.189, 95% CI 1.073–9.482; P = 0.037). Conclusion Endocardial ablation is effective to ARVC VT though it may require repeated procedures. Induced multiple VTs was correlated with worse outcomes.

A brilliant pupil of Enzo Paci at the University of Milan, editor of the journal «aut aut», Veca chaired the Fondazione Feltrinelli and the Casa della Cultura in Milan and was the author of many books on philosophy based on the critical introduction of Anglo-Saxon analytical culture. The presentation in Italy of the work of John Rawls was important and marked the liveliest interest in the problem of the “just society”. He played a leading role in the debate on the possible developments of the Italian left after the fall of the Berlin Wall. For the Expo Laboratory he was responsible for drafting the “Milan Charter” on environmental sustainability.

We present a unique series of patients (pts) with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM) and unmappable ventricular tachycardia (VT) who demonstrated predominantly normal left ventricular (LV) endocardial (ENDO) voltage and abnormal epicardial (EPI) substrate defined by intracardiac echo (ICE) and fractionated electrograms (EGMS). This substrate served as an appropriate ablation target for VT. All patients underwent ICE imaging and detailed ENDO and EPI voltage mapping to further characterize the substrate and define the EGM correlates. 5 pts with NICM had increased echogenicity in the lateral epicardium by ICE imaging. Detailed LV ENDO mapping (199 ± 94.5 points) identified no voltage abnormalities in 4 pts. In one pt, a 16.2cm2 low voltage area in the LV ENDO was present and adjacent to the EPI abnormality. In all pts, detailed EPI mapping (477 ± 158 points) revealed a distinct area (20.6 ± 3.6 cm2) of low voltage (<1.0mV) that correlated with the echogenic area. These areas displayed low amplitude EGMS that were wide (>80msec), split, and late (beyond QRS). (Figure 1 ). After excluding coronary branch vessels and the course of the phrenic nerve, all pts underwent substrate based ablation based on pace-mapping and targeting of abnormal EGMS to eliminate the targeted VT. No VT has recurred during mean follow-up of 20mo (range 1–30 mo). Unique EPI substrate in NICM, defined by echo imaging and confirmed by EGM correlates, can be successfully targeted for RF ablation to provide effective VT control.

Introduction: Endo-epicardial catheter ablation of ventricular tachycardia (VT) in patients (pts) with nonischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM) has been reported to have satisfactory results at the short- and mid-term follow-up. We sought to determine the outcomes at the long-term follow-up of endo-epicardial ablation of VT in NICM. Hypothesis: Catheter ablation provides satisfactory long term outcome Methods: We prospectively enrolled 128 pts (age 59±13 years, 116 [91%] males) with NICM who underwent endo-epicardial radiofrequency catheter ablation at our Institution. After substrate mapping, all critical sites for the clinical or induced VT(s), identified with activation, entrainment or pace-mapping, together with late, split and fractionated potentials were targeted with focal and/or linear ablation. The procedural endpoint was noninducibility of sustained monomorphic VT. Pts were followed with ICD interrogation. Results: A total of 108 (73%) pts had idiopathic dilated NICM. The remaining 20 (14%) pts had hypertrophic CM (n=11), suspected inflammatory CM (n=6), or valvular CM (n=3). The mean LV ejection fraction was 33±15%. After a mean follow-up of 19 months (max 97 months), a total of 36 (28%) pts died and 17 (13%) underwent heart transplant. Cumulative survival free from any recurrent VT was 53% (68/128 patients) (Figure A). In the remaining 60 (47%) patients with VT recurrences, catheter ablation still resulted in a significant beneficial clinical impact on VT burden, with 25/60 (42%) having only isolated (1-2) VT episodes over follow-up, and a striking reduction of VT storm in the remaining pts (Figure B). Conclusions: In patients with NICM and VT, endo-epicardial substrate-based ablation is effective in achieving long-term freedom from any VT in 53% of patients, with a substantial improvement in VT burden in many of the remaining patients.

Abstract Background Endobronchial lipoma is an extremely rare benign tumor, which is generally located in the first three subdivisions of the tracheobronchial tree. According to the existing literature, all endobronchial lipomas are single (one per patient). Here, we report a rare case in which the patient presented with two endobronchial lipomas in the same patient, and underwent a bronchoscopic tumor resection in the left main bronchus and the left lower bronchus. Both tumors were pathologically confirmed as endobronchial lipoma. Case presentation A 52-year-old Chinese man presented at the clinic reporting a mild cough with yellow color sputum and exertional dyspnea for 2 weeks. He was a heavy smoker (45 pack-years). Chest auscultation demonstrated faint wheezing in left lower lobe. Computed tomography (CT) revealed two low-density endobronchial masses located in the middle segment of the left main bronchus and the posterior basilar segmental bronchus of the left lower lobe. The neoplasms measured a CT-attenuation value of -70HU, −98HU in density with air trapping and atelectasis in the segmental bronchus of the left lower lobe. The patient underwent interventional bronchoscopic management to remove the neoplasms by using an electrosurgical snare, cryotherapy, and electrocautery. The locations of the neoplasms were confirmed at the left main bronchus and the superior segment of the left lower lobe during bronchoscopic intervention. Histopathological examination confirmed that both tissues were consistent with lipomas. After 18 months of follow-up, the patient was free of symptoms and CT revealed that bronchiectasia remained in the superior segment of the left lower lobe; however, no mass lesion was present in the left bronchus. Conclusions This case suggests that an endobronchial lipoma can present as multiple lesions, and both proximal and distal types can simultaneously occur in the same patient. Thus, these findings help us further understand the biology of endobronchial lipomas.

Abstract Both the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) are critical factors contributing to Antarctic sea ice variability on interannual time scales. However, their joint effects on sea ice are complex and remain unclear for each austral season. In this study, satellite sea ice concentration (SIC) observations and atmospheric reanalysis data are utilized to assess the impacts of combined SAM and ENSO on the seasonal Antarctic sea ice changes. The joint SAM-ENSO impacts on southern high-latitudes are principally controlled by the strength and position of the wave activity and associated atmospheric circulation anomalies affected by their interactions. In-phase events (La Niña/positive SAM and El Niño/negative SAM, hereinafter referred to as LN/pSAM & EN/nSAM) are characterized with an SIC dipole located in the Weddell/Bellingshausen Seas and Amundsen/Ross Seas, while out-of-phase events (El Niño/positive SAM and La Niña/negative SAM, hereinafter referred to as EN/pSAM & LN/nSAM) experience significant SIC anomalies in the Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean. Sea ice budget analyses are conducted to separate the dynamic and thermodynamic contributions inducing the sea ice intensification anomalies. The results show that in-phase intensification anomalies also display a pattern similar to the SIC dipole and are mainly driven by the direct thermodynamic forcing at the ice edge and thermodynamic responses to meridional sea ice drift in the inner pack, especially in autumn and winter. Dynamic processes caused by zonal sea ice drift also play an important role during out-of-phase conditions in addition to the same mechanisms during in-phase conditions.

AbstractThe western North Pacific anomalous anticyclone (WNPAC) is a key bridge that links El Niño and East Asian climate variability. Future projections of ENSO-related WNPAC changes under global warming are highly uncertain across climate models. Based on a 40-member ensemble from the Community Earth System Model Large Ensemble (CESM-LE) project, we investigate the effects of internal variability on the El Niño-related WNPAC projection. Here, we first develop a decomposition method to separate the contributions of El Niño amplitude change and non-amplitude change from the leading uncertainty in the El Niño-related WNPAC projection. Based on the decomposition, approximately 23% of the uncertainty in the El Niño-related WNPAC projection is attributed to the El Niño amplitude change, while the remaining 77% is from the non-amplitude change, which is mainly related to the change in the El Niño decaying pace. A larger (smaller) El Niño amplitude can enhance (weaken) the WNPAC through a stronger (weaker) tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) capacitor effect. For non-amplitude change, a faster (slower) El Niño decaying pace can also enhance (weaken) the WNPAC through descending Rossby waves in response to cold sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTA) over the tropical central-eastern Pacific. The decomposition method can be generalized to investigate the sources of uncertainty related to El Niño properties in climate projections and to help improve the understanding of changes in the interannual variability of East Asian-western Pacific climate under global warming.
