Résumé :
Abstract It is tempting to see public slaves as sharing characteristics of both slave and free and, therefore, as embodying an intermediate position that proves binary approaches to slavery and freedom wrong. This article argues that this temptation should be resisted. Based on an analysis of cases from different regions and periods, it agrees broadly with Patterson's clear distinction between slave and free statuses, but not with his interpretation of elite slaves as 'the ultimate slaves'. Public slaves were unusual slaves. A close analysis of their circumstances, and of the circumstances of other categories of slaves endowed with particular influence or autonomy in their societies, reveals that the social death metaphor suits certain contexts better than other. It does not accurately capture the historical diversity of the statuses and conditions of enslaved persons through time, and hence is unhelpful for the purpose of comparative generalisation.

Résumé :
Introduction. The social conditionality of criminal bankruptcy is revealed through its historical analysis. The origin of the institution of economic insolvency is associated with the emergence and development of market and commodity-money relations. Under the influence of socio-economic conditions, this institution underwent various changes. Purpose. The purpose is consider the development of the institution of bankruptcy in Russia through the prism of political economic relations, to show that it is precisely such relations that determine the degree and extent of its criminality. Methodology. The author used historical and political economic analysis. Results. Three periods can be distinguished in the development of the institution of insolvency in Russia: nationally distinctive, enlightened absolutism, and post-Soviet. In the first period in Russia, there was an institution of enslaved servitude, which was incorrectly identified with bankruptcy. The tendency towards the enslavement of peasants and servants caused a host of undesirable consequences, including the ruin of taxpayers, flight from debts, and riots, which led to the policy of state restriction of the interests of creditors. The institution of bankruptcy comes to Russia from the West during the Petrine and postPeter era and finally takes shape during the period of enlightened absolutism. The attitude towards debtors clearly follows the political line determined by the autocracy. Opposition to the criminal bankruptcy of individuals was most fully embodied in the Criminal and Correctional Penal Code of 1845. It was determined in three directions: recipients who violate loan rules; to attorneys, certifying the obligation both to the bankruptcies and insolvent persons themselves, as well as to persons involved in bankruptcy. The post-Soviet period begins with the restoration of capitalism, and in artificial form. The natural course of development of capitalism spans more than one century. In Russia, it was recreated in three decades. As a result, an economic model is created that is far from the classical one. The differences are in the degree of its criminality and criminogenicity. The institution of bankruptcy plays a significant role in creating the modern Russian model of capitalism, and from this point of view, three periods can also be distinguished in its development, in each of which specific political goals are highlighted: 1) the destruction of the socialist economy; 2) the initial accumulation of capital; c) regulatory settlement. Conclusion. The bankruptcy institution is actively developing when economic relations are criminalized. In Soviet times, bankruptcy as an institution was not in demand, since socialist economic relations were not needed in it. This indicates that the economy under socialism was the least criminalized, since the institution of criminal bankruptcy is needed under capitalism, the nature of which was initially criminal. A planned economy excludes bankruptcy of the enterprise, and the main principle of socialism “All for the good of man!” makes it almost impossible for a person to fall into legal economic dependence.

One of the main causes is the influence of misuse of technology which has led to the birth of the Alpha Generation that is enslaved by technology. A person's social life deteriorates so that he does not respect differences. The use of technology well can avoid the anti-tolerant nature and be able to form prospective generations who are civilized and humane in accordance with Islamic values. Résumé :
Abstract: This article analyzes published sources, archival records, and prints and paintings to show that, over the course of the eighteenth century, white colonists in Saint-Domingue attempted unsuccessfully to dehumanize enslaved persons by exploiting their breasts as sources of productive and reproductive labor and by disfiguring them by means of brands. Enslaved women and men resisted that control. Despite being branded, enslaved persons ran away. Knowing the tremendous cultural and social value accorded to their breasts, enslaved women, whether as mothers or othermothers, pursued a strategy of subversive breastfeeding. By so doing, they nurtured children and sustained survival, including fugitive networks. Ultimately, these Black mothers impacted how freedom was defined and imagined both during and long after the Haitian Revolution. These findings contribute to histories of the breast, the Haitian Revolution, intimate labor, and the body. They make visible women and their decisions in challenging enslavement.

Résumé :
AbstractThis article analyzes in depth the history of Petrona, an enslaved woman sold in Santa Fe (Argentina), sent to Buenos Aires and later possibly to Montevideo (Uruguay). By reconstructing her case, the article demonstrates how the legal status of enslaved persons was affected by the redefinitions of jurisdictions and by the forced or voluntary crossings between political units. This study also shows the circulation and uses of the Free Womb law in Argentina and Uruguay and traces legal experts’ debates over its meaning. At the same time, it reflects on the knowledge enslaved people had of those abolitionist norms and how they used them to resist forced relocations, attempt favorable migrations, or achieve full freedom. The article crosses analytical dimensions and historiographies—legal, social, and political— and articulates them by reflecting more broadly on these factors: the impact of the revolution of independence on enslaved persons’ lives, the scarce circulation of abolitionist public discourse in Río de la Plata, the gendered bias of the process, and the central yet untold uses of antislavery rhetoric in the national narratives.

Résumé :
This article explores the transition from enslavement to post-emancipation realities in the Muslim-majority societies of the Middle East and North Africa during the last stage of empire and the first phase of nation-building. The main argument is that within enslavement, there were gradations of bondage and servitude, not merely a dichotomy between free and enslaved. The various social positions occupied by the enslaved are best understood as points on a continuum of social, economic, and cultural realities. In turn, these were reproduced after emancipation in the successor states that emerged following the demise of the Ottoman and Qajar empires, the Sharifian state in Morocco, and the various principalities of the Arab/Persian Gulf. Hence, post-emancipation did not create equal citizenship for all freed persons, but rather the inequality within enslavement transitioned into the post-imperial societies of the Middle East and North Africa.

Résumé :
Slave labour or work in conditions analogous to slavery continues on all continents and sometimes tends to be mistaken for “simple” violations of labour laws. Therefore, this work aims to identify parameters that allow distinguishing between situations of non-compliance with labour legislation and modern rural slavery in Brazil through the analysis of accommodation conditions. To achieve this objective, a bibliographic research was developed in six databases on sanitary, accommodation and clothing issues of enslaved workers in the 19th century in Brazil. The resulting data were compared with data from a sample of 392 proven cases of neoslavery detected between 2007 and 2017 in Brazil. The analysis focused on the general conditions of the physical structures necessary to protect workers against bad weather, animal attacks, violence, sanitary conditions to support physiological and asepsis needs, as well as the clothing provided and used. Similarities were found in the accommodation conditions between enslaved and neoenslaved workers in Brazil between the 19th and 21st centuries. The availability of sanitary conditions (toilets), rest (bedrooms/dormitories), and the general housing structure are very similar. Future research may point towards identifying other parameters and developing a tool to help authorities unequivocally identify neoslavery situations.

Abstract This introduction highlights the contribution of the special issue to a radical contextualisation of the history of the enslaved. In particular, it suggests that the conditions and circumstances that foster or hamper practices of enslavement need to be studied as part of a broader set of labor relations. And it proposes that shifts in the practices of enslavement are closely related to broader transitions in power relations. This double expansion allows connecting the history of enslavement and the enslaved with broader themes in labor and social history.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT An often-adopted use of the predicate, “to be colonized”, is one that applies it loosely, not in reference to original Africans or indigenous people enslaved by Europeans or heirs of enslaved persons, but to academics who are citizens of former colonies like Brazil, their ways of thinking, philosophical works, academic communities, etc. But under what conditions one is to do that? And how can one avoid the attribution of such predicate to oneself or one’s works? These issues have not received much attention. While dialoguing with authors associated with decolonial studies, Brazilian, continental and analytic philosophers, this essay aims to contribute to change this situation. It does so by proposing an alternative use of the predicate, “to be ‘subtly’ philosophically colonized”, according to which this predicate is to be applied to philosophical works that have the thirteen features described in the essay or at least most of them. It is argued that this alternative use is to be endorsed because it is: precise; exemplified in a detailed way by at least one philosophical work; and “inexplosive” in not suggesting the “explosive” claim that practically all Western philosophical works are colonized by Western metaphysics.

This article discusses the use of stylized voicing, specifically falsetto phonation, in Gullah Geechee during a cultural heritage tour in Charleston, South Carolina. Gullah Geechee, a minority creole language spoken by descendants of formerly enslaved persons in the American Southeastern coastal Lowcountry, is analyzed in the study using participant observation and sociophonetic data collection. The research finds that the stylized pitch-shifting is a productive component of the guide’s ethnolinguistic repertoire, used for multiple indexical functions, including constructing authenticity and performing stylized double-voicing. The data shows the complex social meaning of this feature related to speech genres, performance, perceptions of authenticity and authority, and the ethnolinguistic repertoire of a minority language commodified for outsider consumption. The study also links Gullah Geechee prosodic indexicality with its related variety, African American English.

Résumé :
Seventeenth-century reports of the suffering of European indentured servants and the fact that many were transported to Barbados against their wishes has led to a growing body of transatlantic popular literature, particularly dealing with the Irish. This literature claims the existence of “white slavery” in Barbados and, essentially, argues that the harsh labor conditions and sufferings of indentured servants were as bad as or even worse than that of enslaved Africans. Though not loudly and publicly proclaimed, for some present-day white Barbadians, as for some Irish and Irish-Americans, the “white slavery” narrative stresses a sense of shared victimization; this sentiment then serves to discredit calls for reparations from the descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States and the former British West Indies. This article provides a detailed examination of the sociolegal distinctions between servitude and slavery, and argues that it is misleading, if not erroneous, to apply the term “slave” to Irish and other indentured servants in early Barbados. While not denying the hardships suffered by indentured servants, referring to white servants as slaves deflects the experiences of millions of persons of African birth or descent. We systematically discuss what we believe are the major sociolegal differences and the implications of these differences between indentured servitude and the chattel slavery that uniquely applied to Africans and their descendants.

Abstract In this article we first trace the history of “management,” particularly in the United States, from the plantation to the factory to the corporation, with the intention of understanding and contextualizing “classroom management” in today‘s educational lexicon. To do so, we look at the intertwining history of racial knowledge and the management of enslaved persons; the subsequent development of scientific management; social efficiency educators‘ application of scientific management to education; and conceptions of classroom management in today‘s neoliberal environment, in which education is increasingly positioned as a consumer good subject to individual choice and competitive markets. We further look to examples from post- -colonial Africa to demonstrate the ways in which neocolonial forms of scientific management comingle and entwine with neoliberal policies and procedures. The global phenomenon of scientific management, rife with neoliberalism and racism, is finally examined in the context of (so-called) Culturally Responsive Classroom Management, a neoliberal project that claims to advocate social justice through the process of managing bodies in classrooms.

Résumé :
The concept of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in today’s conditions is highlighted in the article. The article reveals the features of providing assistance to such persons both during active hostilities and in safe places. Thus, it considers the concept of first aid, which is a necessary step to overcome post-traumatic stress disorders and other disorders, as well as part of the rehabilitation process. The concepts of «social rehabilitation» and «social adaptation» are outlined, namely internally displaced persons. It was determined that social rehabilitation and social adaptation are interdependent and complementary processes that have certain common goals and methods and technologies to achieve these goals. Recommendations for the provision of social services for IDPs that will promote social rehabilitation and social adaptation are described. The stages of the adaptation process underlying J. Gullahorn's theory of assessing the adaptation strategies of IDPs are described. The means of museum activity which can be used during the process of social rehabilitation and social adaptation of IDPs are presented. Among them the author(s) elucidate the project «Cultural-recreational-tourist Cherkasy region: inclusive-social 3D-map» with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation, which is designed for both offline and online use. The world museums, whose exhibits are available online are also presented. The fact is taken into account that in order to cope with this challenge an interdisciplinary team is needed, able to create a set of measures that will contribute to the psychophysiological state of the individual. That is why this article will be useful for medical professionals, psychotherapists, psychologists, rehabilitation specialists and social workers.

Résumé :
The article analyzes the social security of internally displaced persons. Based on the analysis of current legislation and modern scientific research, a definition of the concept of «internally displaced persons» is proposed. The causes of forced migration and their impact on the social security of internally displaced persons in Ukraine are indicated. Namely, due to the military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, a large number of Ukrainian citizens were forced to move, saving their own lives, which led to forced migration, both external and internal. Statistical data on the number of internally displaced persons are indicated. The constitutional rights of a person, a citizen and internally displaced persons are specified. It is indicated that the fact of internal displacement is confirmed by a certificate of registration of an internally displaced person. It was established that the state maximally contributes to the support of such a category of population as internally displaced persons and maximally mitigates the consequences of the armed aggression of the Russian Federation. It is noted that for the development and improvement of the material and technical base aimed at ensuring the protection of the rights and freedoms of internally displaced persons, funds from enterprises, institutions and organizations, foreign states and international organizations can be attracted in the form of charitable, humanitarian, material and technical assistance, charitable organizations and public associations, other sources not prohibited by law. It is noted that for persons with disabilities and children and for other internally displaced persons, financial support for accommodation is provided, as well as one-time assistance can be received by persons who have been evacuated from the areas of hostilities. It is indicated that compensation is provided to owners of damaged or destroyed housing, compensation for damages, as well as compensation to entrepreneurs for employment of internally displaced persons. It is noted that the promotion and implementation of political, economic, cultural and other measures for the social protection of internally displaced persons and other citizens of Ukraine is an important duty of the state.

Résumé :
The paper addresses some aspects of the compensatory approach in criminal proceedings in the context of the social value of law, which is critical in ensuring the rights and interests of participants with disabilities in criminal proceedings. The legal mechanisms established in criminal proceedings should aim at ensuring equal conditions for all participants in criminal proceedings in terms of access to legal and fair justice. The author believes that there is a need to draw attention to the legal status of participants with disabilities in criminal proceedings. It is necessary to recognize socially vulnerable categories of persons (persons with disabilities) as the participants with special legal status in criminal proceedings. A compensatory approach should also be adopted in the implementation of the legal regulation of the participation of such persons in criminal proceedings. It is necessary to “reach”, “raise” the possibility of exercising their procedural rights to the level of other participants. The procedural mechanism should contain a list of general and special rights and obligations of these persons, as well as guarantees for their implementation. This approach is compensatory and reflects the social value of law in criminal proceedings. The author considers the consolidation of the compensatory approach as the realization of the idea of a social state and international socially significant values to ensure equal and fair criminal proceedings.

The author intends to analyze an important issue in connection with the operation of social farms in Hungary, namely the issue of land acquisition and land use by legal persons providing social farm services. As the Hungarian regulations restrict land acquisition by legal persons, they exclude social enterprises providing social farm services from this possibility. This restriction makes the operation of social farms difficult. This article examines the respective regulation of four other countries in comparison with the Hungarian, and then advances de lege ferenda proposals for Hungarian regulation to allow and facilitate social enterprises providing social farm services acquiring land ownership or using the land.

Résumé :
The article is devoted to the problem of building a new worldview discourse in the consideration of issues of education of persons with disabilities. The conditions of the pandemic pose a certain risk of reducing the level of social interactions and educational opportunities for persons with disabilities due to the limitations that are characteristic of this entire social group as a whole. One of the new ways of solving this problem is the rationale for strategic communications, the purpose of which is to prevent or minimize threats that may reduce the quality of education of this social group. Based on a new worldview discourse, the authors of the article distinguish two types of strategic communications, where the first type, from the standpoint of humanistic approach, involves external interactions and is focused on creating social conditions for the education of persons with disabilities, as well as on preventing social threats. The second type of strategic communications, internal, is associated with the use of a system-structural approach to an educational institution, is considered as a complex of internal interactions directly related to the educational process of persons with disabilities. It is taken into account that the content of supporting the educational process within the framework of an educational institution for a student with a disability in a pandemic is insufficient. It is supposed to activate external interactions that create additional social conditions for full-fledged complex support, including the necessity of using social advertising. The problem of complex socio-pedagogical and psychological support for persons with disabilities in the conditions of using the potential of a metropolis is posed and substantiated. The inclusion of a student with a disability in such a broad social context gives him or her the opportunity to more fully acquire of subjectivity through participation in socially meaningful activities. The choice and justification of strategic communications in the field of education of persons with disabilities can not only contribute to the development of social activity, success in learning, but also creates conditions for professional growth and promotes social creativity of persons with disabilities.

Résumé :
The purpose of the article is to analyze the ways of social security for internally displaced persons in the ongoing wartime context. To achieve the article’s purpose, the author used the methods of analysis (to analyze the current state of social protection and social security of internally displaced persons); monographic method (to reflect the situation with internally displaced persons in the ongoing wartime context); abstract-logical method (to summarize the collected material). Under current conditions, there is an increasing need for social protection and social security. Beginning with the Russian military aggression of 2014, such a group of the population as internally displaced persons appeared in Ukrainian society. According to Ukrainian legislation, as such person is treated a citizen of Ukraine, a foreigner or a stateless person who stays legally on the territory of Ukraine and has the right to permanent residence in Ukraine, who was forced to leave or abandon her/his place of residence as a result of/in order to avoid the negative consequences of armed conflict, occupation, widespread violence, human rights violations and natural or man-made emergencies. Internally displaced persons are people who have been forced to flee their homes suddenly as a result of armed conflict, internal hostility, systematic human rights violations or natural disasters, but stay on the territory of their own country. Currently, there are a number of social benefits for internally displaced persons on the territory of Ukraine, as well as international aid programs, in particular: the Ministry of Social Policy Program, the UN Government Program, the UN World Food Program, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Program, the Ministry of Social Policy Program in cooperation with UNICEF, the International Committee of the Red Cross in

Résumé :
The Brazilian economy was, until the end of the 19th Century, based on slave labour. However, in this first quarter of the 21st Century, the problem persists. These situations tend to be mistaken with “simple” violations of labour laws. This work aims to establish Occupational Health and Safety parameters, focusing on energy needs, to distinguish between the breach of labour legislation and modern rural slavery in the 21st Century in Brazil. In response to this challenge, bibliographical research was carried out on the feeding and energy replenishment conditions of Brazilian slaves in the 19th Century. Obtained data were compared with a sample where 392 cases of neo-slavery in Brazil are described. The energy spent and the energy supplied was calculated to identify the enslaved workers’ general feeding conditions in the two historical periods. The general conditions of food and water supply were analysed. It was possible to identify three comparable parameters: food quality, food quantity, and water supply. It was concluded that there is a parallelism of energy replenishment conditions between Brazilian slaves and neo-slaves of the 19th and 21st centuries, respectively, different from that of free workers. This difference can help authorities identify and punish instances of modern slavery.

Résumé :
The article examines the types of social services provided to homeless persons in accordance with the Law of Ukraine "On Social Services". On the basis of the analysis of legislative norms and scientific developments, the need to apply a comprehensive approach to the functioning of the system of providing services to homeless persons is substantiated, taking into account the state social standards, which determine the procedure for providing appropriate social services for persons who find themselves in difficult life circumstances. It was found that homeless persons are recipients of such social services as shelter, night shelter, supported accommodation of homeless persons, social integration and reintegration, and in-kind assistance. At the same time, the legislation of Ukraine provides for the possibility of applying to homeless persons such types of social services as information and social prevention, representation of interests, social support during employment and at the workplace, representation (mediation). Given the fact that the only social service within which emergency medical assistance is provided on the street is emergency (crisis) intervention, it is necessary to recognize homeless persons as its recipients. It is also proposed to supplement the list of social services for homeless people with social and psychological rehabilitation. Attention is focused on the need to harmonize the provisions of Art. 17 of the Law of Ukraine «On the Basics of Social Protection of Homeless Persons and Homeless Children» and Art. 16 of the Law of Ukraine «On Social Services» regarding the types of social services provided to homeless persons. It has been proven that temporary shelter, social, medical, legal, educational, and rehabilitation services for homeless persons in the sense of the provisions of the Law of Ukraine «On Social Services» are not provided for. Therefore, it is suggested that the provisions of Art. 17 of the Law of Ukraine «On the Basics of Social Protection of Homeless Persons and Homeless Children» in the following wording: «Homeless persons have the right to social services and rehabilitation in the order and under the conditions determined by the legislation of Ukraine.»

Résumé :
Hundreds of white Southerners traveled to Gold Rush California with slaves. Long after California became a free state in 1850, these masters transplanted economic and social practices that sustained slavery in the American South to the goldfields. At the same time, enslaved people realized that Gold Rush conditions disrupted customary master-slave relationships and pressed for more personal autonomy, better working conditions, and greater economic reward. The result was a new regional version of slavery that was remarkably flexible and subject to negotiation. This fluidity diminished, however, as proslavery legislators passed laws that protected slaveholding rights and vitiated the state's antislavery constitution. California's struggle over bondage highlights the persistence of the slavery question in the Far West after the Compromise of 1850 and illuminates slavery's transformation as it moved onto free soil.

Résumé :
The issue of providing social services to vulnerable population categories receives special attention due to country instability, war, deterioration of living conditions, etc. The number of internally displaced persons, people with disabilities, participants in hostilities, and persons who have lost their homes or relatives and need special support from the state and the public increases. In particular, the need to provide a special type of social service as social adaptation has increased. The article's purpose is to characterize social adaptation as a special type of service and to analyze the provision of this service to vulnerable categories of the population in the Cherkasy Region. Methods applied: analysis of literary sources and the regulatory legal framework to determine the features of social services provision, analysis of activities of state and non-state organizations of Cherkasy region to determine the level and features of providing social adaptation to vulnerable population categories. We consider social adaptation as a system of adaptation measures designed to eliminate or change limitations of life activities to preserve social independence, continue social activity; development of social skills, abilities and competencies through training or development of adaptation strategies. The provision of social adaptation services is determined by relevant regulatory and legal documents. In the Cherkasy region, the provision of social adaptation services covers a significant number of vulnerable population groups: the elderly, people with disabilities, internally displaced persons, war veterans, and their families, persons who have served sentences in the form of restriction or deprivation of liberty, etc. Main activities provided within the scope of social adaptation: provision of legal and psychological consultations, assistance in drawing up the necessary documentation, assistance in learning the state language, establishing connections of internally displaced persons with other community members, conducting master classes, group work with children, training for internally displaced persons, etc.

In the article, the problem of increasing the effectiveness of rehabilitation of persons with disabilities in the community in wartime conditions is updated and substantiated at the theoretical, legal, and empirical levels. On the basis of a focus group survey, the importance and failure to fully realize the problems of rehabilitation of persons with disabilities in the community in wartime conditions were proven. It was established that according to the opinion of persons with disabilities and their parents, the problems of rehabilitation of persons with disabilities are solved to a greater extent by local authorities and local self-government bodies, social services and health care institutions, etc.; there is a need to create a permanent supportive and developmental environment in the community; there is a problem in the organization of work, employment, opportunities to get to work; a violation of the feeling of security is noted, there is a feeling of powerlessness, irritation, misunderstanding of the nearest prospects; fixed need to be listened to and heard, to regularly communicate with specialists. The foreign and Ukrainian experience of psychosocial aspects of increasing the effectiveness of rehabilitation of persons with disabilities in the community is analysed. The author's social project "Different and Equal" is proposed, aimed at improving the efficiency of providing rehabilitation services to persons with disabilities in the community in wartime conditions. The main feature of this social project is that it is maximally focused on integrating the efforts of community members, persons with disabilities and their family members to promote social adaptation, strengthening the resources of persons with disabilities to overcome the challenges and threats of war.

Résumé :
The main directions of Ukraine’s social policy towards the disabled are presented in the article. Topical issues of integration of persons with disabilities into society are covered. The meaning of the concept of “social stigmatization” is revealed. The authors analyze and define the tools of social stigma in the legislation of Ukraine on issues of social integration of persons with disabilities. It has been proven that stigma in some cases deprives a person of full status, becomes a source of prejudice, discrimination, social isolation of the stigmatized, causes low self-esteem and feelings of depression, forms a negative social identity, and complicates psychosocial adaptation. Certain steps have already been taken to ensure the protection of persons with disabilities by creating appropriate conditions for them in society and equal opportunities for the realization of vital needs, abilities, and creative potential. The article defines a system of measures aimed at improving the lives of persons with disabilities, restoring their social status, achieving material independence, and comprehensive integration into society. The authors also propose measures to remove obstacles caused by stigmatization in the way of integration of persons with disabilities into society.

Résumé :
Millions of Ukrainian families with children have been forced to leave their permanent place of residence, moving to safer places under the current conditions of martial law in the country, which in its effects corresponds to the difficult life and often traumatic circumstances. The challenge arises in the need to meet the needs of new residents for social, medical, psychological, legal, social and pedagogical services, and appropriate living conditions. Forced moving can cause emotional and physical stress, fear, depression, inability to adequately assess events and make decisions, respond to them, and adapt to the changed conditions. The need for social protection and psychological and social and pedagogical assistance takes on increasing importance for families, in particular for children in difficult circumstances as a result of military actions. The article reveals the peculiarities of providing social and pedagogical support to children of internally displaced persons under martial law. The need for a multilevel comprehensive system of support for victims and displaced persons, the organization of intersectoral and interdepartmental interaction between specialists of corresponding services in providing complete psychological and social and pedagogical help, and coordination of efforts of various specialists is brought up to date. The need for social and pedagogical and psychological support for internally displaced children, which may require the recovery of their mental health and social well-being, an appropriate response to hostilities, and adaptation to new, changed conditions, is emphasized. It was established that social and pedagogical support is a type of activity of a social care teacher, aimed at organizing preventive and operational social and psychological and pedagogical assistance in preventing and overcoming situations that violate the vital activities of children. An analysis of models of social and pedagogical support for internally displaced children in difficult circumstances has been conducted. The technology of social and pedagogical support for children of internally displaced persons is considered. The relevant directions and content of social and pedagogical support for children of internally displaced persons under martial law are outlined. It is noted that modeling and organization of social and pedagogical support for children of internally displaced persons who suffered from military operations or were forced to leave their homes will help them to overcome the psychological trauma of military events, and will contribute to successful adaptation to the new changed conditions. Keywords: internally displaced persons, difficult life circumstances, social services, adaptation of internally displaced children, social and pedagogical support, model of social and pedagogical support for children of internally displaced families.

Résumé :
Abstract Despite growing attention to the history of slavery in the Indian Ocean and Indonesian Archipelago worlds, the debate on the nature or characteristics of slavery in these regions has been left largely unsettled. Whereas some scholars emphasize the existence of harsh forms of hereditary slavery similar to those found in the Americas, others argue that the nature of slavery in Asia was urban, status-based, and milder than in the Atlantic world. This article explores case studies of slaves escaping in and around the Dutch East India Company (VOC) city of Cochin. Studying court records that bring to light the strategies and social networks of enslaved runaways provides new insights into the characteristics of slavery and the conditions of slaves in and around VOC-Cochin. The findings indicate that the social and everyday conditions under which slaves lived were highly diverse and shaped by the direct relations between slave and master, influenced by elements of trust, skill, and control. Relations of slavery nevertheless remained engrained by the recurrence of physical punishments and verbal threats, despite sometimes relatively open situations. This reminds us that easy dichotomies of “benign,” “Asian,” “household,” or “urban” versus “European,” “Atlantic,” or “plantation” slavery obscure as much as they reveal.

Abstract Cognitive impairment and dementia continue to threaten the aging population. Although no one is immune, certain groups, namely black older persons, are more likely to have a diagnosis of certain dementias. Because researchers have not found a purely biological reason for this disparity, they have turned to a biopsychosocial model. Specifically, black persons in the United States are more likely to live with social conditions that affect their stress levels which in turn affect physiological regulation leading to conditions that result in higher levels of cognitive impairment or dementia. Here we discuss some of these social conditions such as discrimination, education, and socioeconomic status, and how physiological dysregulation, namely allostatic load that can lead to cognitive impairment and dementia in black persons especially.

Stories matter. They matter to those intent on maintaining structures of power and privilege, and to those being crushed by those structures. In the United States, the space to tell, and to hear, our stories has been expanding. This means that the histories and lived realities of those who have been excluded, particularly people of color, are seeping into mainstream discourse, into the books our children read, the movies and television shows they watch, and the many websites comprising social media. Critical race theory has played a role in this expansion. It insists that we recognize the legitimacy of the stories of those deemed “Other” because they have been erased or distorted beyond recognition in the dominant narrative. 3 Critical race theory has helped ensure that the legacies of genocide and broken treaties, of the cruelties imposed upon enslaved persons, of the forced inclusion and exclusion of those regarded simply as disposable labor, have worked their way into the realm of what can be talked about. Critical race scholars have exposed immigration injustices and called out xenophobia and Islamophobia. All this discomfits those who benefit, or believe they benefit, from the status quo.

Human beings as natural persons as well as other juristic persons are expected to contribute to the society as part of social responsibility in addition to their defined legal and professional responsibilities with a view to continuously building a better and equally equitable, peaceful and sustainable society. If defined “social responsibility” as the voluntary contribution of the juristic and natural persons, i.e. government, corporations/ companies, organizations/ associations, and individual human beings, should the matter of contributing for the betterment of the society through social responsibility be left to the contributor? Contrarily, in a situation of functioning within the stringent laws, rules and regulation of the Government by all juristic and natural persons, should we expect something more than their legal and main responsibilities from them on the name of social responsibilities? Do society, moreover communities and individuals, expect special/additional social responsibilities from all persons, and if so, what sorts of responsibilities are included with what priorities? Similarly, are there different approaches in defining responsibilities of various persons, juristic and natural? If yes, in what situations and what conditions? Debates are going on about the functions and procedures for undertaking social responsibilities as well. This paper in the above context is discussing the objectives and missions, functions, structure(s), processes, the expectations from social responsibilities fulfilled and unfulfilled, and the impacts in the society as expected and not expected, thereby open up the areas for comprehensive and holistic discussion.

Résumé :
This paper focuses on the existing mechanisms for the participation of vulnerable persons, including persons with disabilities and children, in civil disputes. As modern democratic society develops the concept of a social state, ensuring equal conditions for the participation of vulnerable persons in civil turnover is essential. Hence, the aim of the study is to identify existing legislative gaps and challenges that prevent the participation of vulnerable persons in civil disputes. Humanity has agreed on a sustainable development plan, in which social sustainability is set as one of the main goals. However, modern civil procedure law is mainly based on the codification of the 19th century, which in turn originates from Roman law. Since then, public relations have changed and modern technologies are constantly developing. The concept of a digital judge, smart contracts, and a blockchain system has already emerged. Therefore, the regulations of civil proceeding do not respond to modern challenges, and it is necessary to update civil procedure legislation in order to provide an equal platform for the participation of vulnerable persons in civil disputes. The purpose of the article is to review the rules of civil procedure law in terms of a social context based on the international approaches, practices, and research. Through a mixed-quantitative, qualitative, and general research methods, as well as comparative analysis, specific recommendations are introduced that will bring civil dispute resolution closer to sustainable development plans and ensure the equal participation of vulnerable persons in civil dispute.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore and describe experiences of recovery among people with co-occurring mental health and substance use conditions (co-occurring conditions) in a rural community in Norway. Design/methodology/approach In-depth individual interviews with eight persons with co-occurring conditions were conducted, audiotaped, transcribed and analysed using a phenomenological approach. This study is part of a research project investigating recovery orientation of services in a Norwegian district. Findings The analysis yielded four dimensions of recovery: feeling useful and accepted; coming to love oneself; mastering life; and emerging as a person. Insecure and inadequate housing and limited solutions to financial problems were described as major obstacles to recovery. Research limitations/implications Further research into the facilitation of recovery as defined by persons with concurrent disorders is needed, particularly regarding the facilitation of community participation. Practical implications This study supports an increased focus on societal and community factors in promoting recovery for persons with co-occurring conditions, as well as service designs that allow for an integration of social services and health care, and for collaboration among services. Social implications The results suggest that the community can aid recovery by accepting persons with co-occurring conditions as fellow citizens and welcoming their contributions. Originality/value The paper provides an enhanced understanding of how persons with co-occurring conditions may experience recovery.

This paper develops a theoretical perspective to elucidate factors that account for health, life success, and resiliency in persons with craniofacial conditions. Three steps are proposed to change how craniofacial conditions are envisioned by clinicians and researchers: (1) creating optimism and positivity around the time of birth and diagnosis, (2) asking children and parents new and different questions, and (3) launching a new craniofacial social science model for research built around understanding resilience and health.

Résumé :
The purpose of the study is to justify the importance of using social insurance as a tool to ensure social protection guarantees of internally displaced persons in Ukraine in the conditions of modern challenges. During the research, dialectical and abstract logical methods, methods of comparison, observation, analysis, synthesis, etc. were used.It has been proven that Russia's military invasion of Ukraine caused massive internal displacement of the population. The challenges associated with these processes necessitated the adoption of effective decisions to ensure adequate social protection of persons who had to leave their place of residence to avoid the negative consequences of war and temporary occupation. An assessment of the legal and organizational foundations of social protection and social security of internally displaced persons (IDPs) was carried out. It has been established that an important role in ensuring the guarantees of social protection of IDPs is played by mandatory social insurance, which is implemented in Ukraine through pension insurance, unemployment insurance, insurance in connection with temporary loss of working capacity, insurance against industrial accidents and occupational diseases, which caused the loss of working capacity. It was determined that, in accordance with the current legislation, displaced persons who are subject to mandatory state social insurance, in the event of an insurance event, are guaranteed material support through the provision of pensions, other types of social benefits and assistance, which are the main source of livelihood. The appointment of material support and the provision of social services are carried out on the basis of information contained in the system of personalized accounting of information about insured persons of the State Register of mandatory state social insurance.

Résumé :
This paper analyzes the needs and possibilities of establishing the social pension, under conditions of the existence of social assistance - a form of general social allowance. The basic parameters of the social pension are analyzed, and a short description is given regarding its treatment in the comparative law of the EU countries. The conclusion is that the social pension, as a particular benefit of the Serbian social security system, is justified only if it is more favorable than the financial security benefit provided by the general social security allowance. Having in mind the large pension system deficit, the preference for increased social assistance for persons unable to work is seen as being more acceptable in providing for their minimum existence.

Résumé :
Abstract The impact of social determinants on health is well documented. Among them, social support has emerged as one of the most important old ideas being revisited from a new perspective. Social support refers to perceived supportive resources from an individual’s social engagement or social network. Recently, the concept of social support has become the subject of intense discussion, as it represents a mechanism by which interventions lead to health improvement. Neuropsychological disorders, on the other hand, represent a large burden on worldwide health. Research has shown that older adults with neurological conditions are embedded in social structures that may affect their outcomes, but not enough attention has been paid to the potential effect of social support on many neurological conditions. Using data collected from studies across cultures that have sought to understand neurological well-being worldwide, this symposium will present evidence of the relationship between social support and neurological conditions among older adults and explore how these mechanisms of social support extend the understanding of health disparities in old-age neurological wellbeing. A discussant will draw out common themes from these papers and connect them with the broader literature on the effect of social support on neurological well-being. We propose that social support constitutes an integral part of medical care for older adults with neurological conditions. This symposium will generate insights to help clinical practitioners more effectively design their social support interventions.

Résumé :
The article describes the problem of social rehabilitation of disabled people. Due to the increase in the number of people with disabilities and disabled people around the world, as well as in our country, the issue of social rehabilitation of these persons remains relevant. Today, persons with disabilities are among the most vulnerable categories of the population. Most of them don’t have a family and don’t want to participate in public life. All this suggests that persons with disabilities in our society are a discriminated and segregated minority. That is why the state, providing social protection for the disabled, is called upon to create the necessary conditions for their individual development of creative and productive capacities and abilities. The authors analyzed the experience of the organization of social rehabilitation of persons with disabilities in Kazakhstan, concretized the update of its content.
