Résumé :
In this paper, 1500 engineering college students in Jiangsu Province, China, were studied by observation, questionnaire, and categorization methods to investigate the "Inter-classroom behavior" of engineering college students. Nine types of behaviors were found: playing mobile games, watching short videos, shopping on Jindo, reading BILIBILI website, studying math or English, chatting, opening "Learning Power" app to study, drowsing and sleeping, going to the bathroom or going for a walk. The author believes that the nine types of " Inter-classroom behaviors" of engineering students reflect their needs. Integrating these student needs into the reform of the Civics course will stimulate the learning enthusiasm of engineering college students and thus enhance their Civics awareness, Civics ability and Civics self-awareness. Therefore, this paper builds a curriculum based on "physical and mental health-video productionmethodology education-examination subjects-study and study" based on the "Inter-classroom behavior" of engineering students. Therefore, this paper builds a reform system of Civic Science curriculum for engineering students based on "physical and mental health, video production, methodological education, study subjects, study and research, and sports and labor education". The sample size of this paper is still relatively small and has certain research limitations. In the future, we will expand the research base, fully explore different spatial and temporal characteristics, more comprehensively and precisely extract the needs of engineering college students, so as to study the curriculum reform based on their needs.

Résumé :
Abstract It is a widely shared hypothesis in Tanzania among educators and the general public that low academic achievement scores are typically due to pupils’ deficiencies in English comprehension. Although in most public primary schools kiSwahili is the language of instruction, while a select few use English, there is evidence showing that even where monolingual instruction is on offer in Tanzania, lessons are held most of the time in both languages concurrently. Much of the research into dual language instruction is driven by the question of whether using English as the language of instruction is superior to using another language, leaving open the question of whether learning in both kiSwahili and English concurrently delivers a better pedagogical result than classroom usage of either language in isolation from the other. In this study, experimenting with the use of Dual Language Instruction (DLI) in three public primary schools indicates that when students are taught in two languages they perform better on tests than those who receive the same lesson content through monolingual instruction.

Résumé :
The traditional education system has obvious limitations, relying on civics curriculum to cultivate and spread the national spirit. By analyzing the characteristics and goals of English courses under the new media, actively forming a large-scale ideological and political education model, and encouraging the innovation and optimization of English courses, new concepts of three-dimensional development can be proposed from the microlevel, and the coverage of ideological and political education can be expanded. Intelligent information technology can realize the coordinated development and collaborative application of English curriculum and ideological and political education. The combination of implicit education and explicit education and the combination of curriculum thinking and thinking curriculum can truly build the higher education model required by the development of the times.

Résumé :

English Language Arts has historically been tied to the civic purposes of schools, and this qualitative study of a social design-based project (Gutiérrez & Vossoughi, 2010) examines the intersection of language and literacy learning and youth civic engagement, a problem space I call “Civics English.” In this dissertation, I describe and analyze the experimentation and inquiry process of a Professional Learning Community of English teachers in a diverse middle school as they integrated civic learning and action into their English teaching practices. The dissertation examines this teacher team’s development and shifts through various tensions and challenges that arise, analyzing through the lenses of Cultural Historical Activity Theory the ways their Professional Learning Community operated as an English teaching activity system attempting to integrate the cultural activity of civic engagement, leading to the teachers’ expansive professional learning (Engeström, 2001) about possibilities and challenges of Civics English.

The English teachers implemented various civic action projects, including producing and sharing multimodal civic advocacy essays online, composing and presenting children’s storybooks about civics issues, and organizing and conducting a Town Hall with local leaders about civic dimensions of allyship and youth sports. This study looks at how, contextualized by these civics activities, they adapt and innovate customary English Language Arts practices, such as reading novels, writing in authentic genres with blended text types, and developing literacy and discourse. As the teachers encounter various tensions that arise in their attempts at Civics English, I present evidence of how these tensions emerge from the contradictions of two intersecting cultural activity systems, and what adaptations and innovations the teachers develop to overcome these tensions.

Integrating civics causes shifts in the teachers’ practices of literary study, writing, and classroom discussion, as they orient students’ learning towards public audiences, collective action, and discursive models of political and professional discourse. I identify how reading literature creates an imaginative space for civic deliberation. And I demonstrate how the Town Hall civics project shifts various dimensions of literacy and language activity by recontextualizing them. The potentials and the constraints of these shifts are examined through studying the teachers’ work, students’ language and activity, and the civic event’s efficacy as an English teaching focal point.

Résumé :
This thesis is concerned chiefly with the military role of sea power during the English Civil War. Parliament’s seizure of the Royal Navy in 1642 is examined in detail, with a discussion of the factors which led to the King’s loss of the fleet and the consequences thereafter. It is concluded that Charles I was outmanoeuvred politically, whilst Parliament’s choice to command the fleet, the Earl of Warwick, far surpassed him in popularity with the common seamen. The thesis then considers the advantages which control of the Navy provided for Parliament throughout the war, determining that the fleet’s protection of London, its ability to supply besieged outposts and its logistical support to Parliamentarian land forces was instrumental in preventing a Royalist victory. Furthermore, it is concluded that Warwick’s astute leadership went some way towards offsetting Parliament’s sporadic neglect of the Navy. The thesis demonstrates, however, that Parliament failed to establish the unchallenged command of the seas around the British Isles. This was because of the Royalists’ widespread privateering operations, aided in large part by the King’s capture of key ports in 1643, such as Dartmouth and Bristol. The Navy was able to block many, but not all, of the King’s arms shipments from abroad, thus permitting Charles to supply his armies in England. Close attention is paid to the Royalist shipping which landed reinforcements from Ireland in 1643-44. The King’s defeat in the First Civil War is then discussed, with the New Model Army, and greater resources, cited as the key factors behind Parliament’s victory, with recognition that the Navy provided essential support. Finally, the revolt of the fleet in 1648 is examined. It is concluded that the increasing radicalism of Parliament alienated a substantial section of the Navy, but that the Royalists failed to capitalise on their new-found maritime strength.

Résumé :
This project examines the conception and imaging of the city in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The thesis aims to chart the ways in which a spatialised reading of the metropolis most fully realised in ceremonial representations of the city informs representational strategies of the time. Chapter 1 looks at the transformations taking place during this period in the practice of land surveying, exploring the implications of the new techniques of geometrical survey for conceptions of civic space. Examining the parallels between the viewing of the estate and the reformation of the Rogationtide ceremonies of perambulating the bounds, the urban context for spatial description is analysed through a reading of John Stow's Survey of London. In Chapter 2 the resistance of the city to a strictly geometrical conception of space is traced through an analysis of early printed maps of the city and the texts of civic ceremonies. The shared interest of these cultural practices in the representation of civic space is interrogated to reveal an understanding of the city as comprising !oth built environment and social body which informs the deployment of the city as a subject of cartographic representation. The next chapter analyses the costume book in the context of a Europewide project of geographical description. The production of a clothed body capable of articulating spatial and hierarchical difference is examined in relation to the available ceremonial models for the negotiation of these intersecting axes of description and the tensions generated by this representational strategy The final chapter undertakes a reinvestigation of the Earl of Essex's rebellion, reading a wide range of materials to argue for the centrality of anxieties over the control of the civic sign to the understanding of this event.

In this thesis, the structural and geotechnical components that contribute to the settlement of English cathedrals are analyzed. The stress at the base of tower and nave piers was found and compared to the allowable bearing capacity. The expected settlement range of each cathedral's tower and nave piers was calculated by analyzing the site's soil conditions. The average settlement expected for a central tower pier not founded on bedrock is between 14 and 21 cm, which is greater than the average expected settlement of a nave pier, 7cm. An average differential settlement between the nave and tower piers expected is between 7 and 14 cm, which can contribute to cracking in the masonry or even structural failures. Less differential settlement will occur in areas with firmer soil than with deep clay.

Résumé :
Traditionally, Spanish schools of civil engineering provide their students a class on “Technical English” in order to develop their language skills. However, this class does not cover all the skills that the student would need in the labor market and mainly focuses in the reading and writing skills, and in a lower degree in the speaking and listening ones. This paper proposes a series of innovative and informal training activities (cine-forum on technical civil engineering topics and role playing on real professional situations) that allow Spanish civil engineering students to develop English skills that can rarely be worked in the classroom (i.e. speaking, negotiating and conversing), encouraging debate, participation, and fostering their self-confidence to speak about technical-English topics in public. Although the students’ level of English is much lower than expected, they all agree on the importance of technical English for their future career. The results also show the students’ lack in skills that are difficult to train in regular classes (speaking and talking). Consequently, this situation would require to provide complementary activities like the ones suggested in this project in order to develop these skills and increase the students’ demand for engineering classes taught in English.

Résumé :
The process of reforming the justice system is a difficult and complex one, and sometimes we face situations when institutions that, despite undergoing extensive legislative transformations, nevertheless, show gaps and imperfections in judicial practice. Among these institutions is the mechanism for ensuring civil action. Thus, currently the litigants from the Republic of Moldova are frequently confronted, either with the lack of complete tools that would ensure their interests, or with the negligence or abuse of the courts in terms of ensuring civil action. At the same time, internationally, there are states that stand out for the undeniable success of the legal instruments requested by the applicant and applied by the court, which protect the interested party from possible tricks of the defendant to create difficulties in the future execution of decision. Among such states, the United Kingdom stands out, which, through the ways of ensuring the action taken, offers a panacea against the abuses of the subjects involved in obligatory relations, but also increases the credibility of the justice system in the view of the litigant. However, such models can also provide positive examples for our legal system.

Résumé :
The Mexican public sector has undergone a dramatic reorganization and professionalization since the initiation of economic crisis and reform in 1982. Though such reforms appear to have improved efficiency in the provision of public services, administrative changes did not include the implementation of a national career civil service. Hunter, Janine. Street Life in the City on the Edge : Street youth recount their daily lives in Bukavu, DRC. StreetInvest, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.20933/100001257.

Résumé :
Bukavu, a city on the shores of Lake Kivu on the eastern edge of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), is home to over one million people, many displaced by poverty and the consequences of armed conflicts that continue to affect the east of the country. More than 10,000 street children and youth live here in street situations. 19 street youth helped to create this story map by recording all the visual data and sharing their stories about their daily lives. The story map includes 9 sections and 2 galleries showing street children and youth’s daily lives in Bukavu and the work of Growing up on the Streets civil society partner PEDER to help them. Chapters include details of how street children and youth collect plastics from the shores of Lake Kivu to sell, they cook, and share food together, or buy from restaurants or stalls. Young women earn their living in sex work and care for their children and young men relax, bond and hope to make extra money by gambling and betting. The original language recorded in the videos is Swahili, this has been translated into English and French for the two versions of the map.
