Résumé :
Abstract Lead arsenate was introduced on a massive scale in agriculture in Spain in the early 1940s. With the support of a network of agricultural engineers, the new Francoist state encouraged the production and use of lead arsenate as the main weapon against a newly arrived pest, the Colorado potato beetle. In this paper I discuss arsenical pesticides as sociotechnological products which played a pivotal role in the joint production of both chemical-based agriculture and the emerging Francoist regime in Spain during the 1940s. I review the campaigns organized by agriculture engineers and the making of the new National Register for Phytosanitary Products in 1942. The new regulations promoted research in pesticide quality control but also contributed to concealing the health hazards. This invisibilization of the risks took shape in the confluence of interests of the emerging Francoist state, the new pesticide industry, and the large network of agricultural engineers.

Résumé :
Purpose Aristotle’s concepts of “episteme”, “techne” and “phronesis” are used to understand the relevance of the education that Spanish building engineers receive to their subsequent work as construction site managers. This paper aims to clarify the role of educational factors as they influence any disparities that building engineers who are working as site managers may feel. More specifically, the objectives are to explore the satisfactions and dissatisfactions they experience in doing their job; to describe the ways they find to cope with educational deficiencies; and to gather their suggestions for improving building engineering education. Design/methodology/approach Using an interpretive approach within the qualitative paradigm, this study draws on data obtained from semi-structured interviews with a sample of 34 building engineers working as site managers in Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). Findings According to the site managers themselves, Spanish universities mainly teach Aristotle’s episteme (abstract knowledge and general principles) and some techne (applied, technical knowledge and skills), which fall short of the expectations placed upon them by their employers. Research limitations/implications Because of the chosen research approach, the sample size is relatively small and results may lack generalisability. Practical implications The results have practical implication for building engineering curriculum design related to the enhancement of building engineers employability and job satisfaction. Originality/value The existing literature offers insight into job-educational mismatches of different occupations in different countries, drawing on survey questionnaires. There is, however, a gap in respect of Spain and the job of the construction site manager. This paper goes some way towards filling that gap, reporting on the experiences of some higher education “customers”: Spanish building engineers working as site managers.

Résumé :
There is a growing demand for engineers and technologists who show multidisciplinary expertise to deal with environmental issues. As a result of this demand, most countries are adapting their old university programs on environmental engineering education. In Spain an official environmental engineering degree does not yet exist, but the Council of Universities is working to present a proposal, based on Bologna agreement concepts. The paper summarizes not only the future perspectives of environmental engineering education in Spain, but also the evolution of the approach during the last decades, which includes the role of the private initiative, the environmental sciences degree, and the intensification in different traditional engineering degrees. Finally, the paper briefly details and compares the syllabus developed in the only four Spanish universities where environmental engineering is offered as a non-official post-graduate course lasting two years.

Résumé :
Relevance. At present the application of numerical analyses to real problems of dam engineering has suffered at times from the gaps between the specialists of mathematical modeling and dam engineers and managers. The first group usually includes information system specialists because they are able to develop the computer models to their full potential. The professionals belonging to the second group often prefer to revert to traditional methods of calculation and empirical methods based on their proven experience. The aim of the work - based on recommendations of International workshops seminars, organized by the ICOLD Committee on Computational Aspects of Dam Analysis and Design, help dam engineers to interact with mathematical modeling specialists and to work with them without language barriers or gaps in knowledge. In this relation the assessment of reliability and applicability of numerical analyses of dams allows engineers to develop the optimal dam design. Methods. Assessment of the reliability of numerical methods of analyses of dam behavior was based on data of 10 International benchmark-workshop seminars, organized by the Committee in Italy (1991 and 1992), France (1994 and 2009), Spain (1996), USA (1999), Austria (2001), Romania (2003), China (2005), Russia (2007), in which specialists of these countries also took part.

Résumé :
Semiconductor spintronics is one of the most interesting research fields that exploits both charge and spin properties for future photonics and electronic devices. Among many challenges of using spin in semiconductors, efficient generation of electron spin polarization at room temperature (RT) remains difficult. Recently, a new approach using defect-mediated spin filtering effect, employing -interstitial defects in Ga(In)NAs alloys, has been shown to turn the material into an efficient spin-polarized source capable of generating >40% conduction electron spin polarization at RT without an application of external fields. In order to fully explore the defectengineered spin functionalities, a better understanding and control of the spin filtering effects is required. This thesis work thus aims to advance our understanding, in terms of both physical and material insights, of the recently discovered spin filtering defects in Ga(In)NAs alloys. We have focused on the important issues of optimization and applications of the spin filtering effects. To improve spin filtering efficiency, important material and defect parameters must be addressed. Therefore, in Papers I–III formation of the  defects in Ga(In)NAs alloys has been examined under different growth and post-growth treatment conditions, as well as in different structures. We found that the  defects were the dominant and important nonradiative recombination centers in Ga(In)NAs epilayers and GaNAs/GaAs multiple quantum wells, independent of growth conditions and post-growth annealing. However, by varying growth and post-growth conditions, up to four configurations of the  defects, exhibiting different hyperfine  interaction (HFI) strengths between defect electron and nuclear (e-n) spins, have been found. This difference was attributed to different interstitial sites and/or complexes of  . Further studiesfocused on the effect of post-growth hydrogen (H) irradiation on the spin filtering effect. Beside the roles of H passivation of N resulting in bandgap reopening of the alloys, H treatment was shown to lead to complete quenching of the spin filtering effect, accompanied by strong suppression in the concentrations of the  defects. We concluded that the observed effect was due to the passivation of the  defects by H, most probably due to the formation of H- complexes. Optimizing spin filtering efficiency also requires detailed knowledge of spin interactions at the defect centers. This issue was addressed in Papers IV and V. From both experimental and theoretical studies, we were able to conclude that the HFI between e-n spins at the  defects led to e-n spin mixing, which degraded spin filtering efficiency at zero field.  Moreover, we have identified the microscopic origin of electron spin relaxation (T1) at the defect centers, that is, hyperfine-induced e-n spin cross-relaxation. Our finding thus provided a guideline to improve spin filtering efficiency by selectively incorporating the  defects with weak HFI by optimizing growth and post-growth treatment conditions, or by searching for new spin filtering defect centers containing zero nuclear spin. The implementation of the defect-engineered spin filtering effect has been addressed in Papers VI–VIII. First, we experimentally demonstrated for the first time at RT an efficient electron spin amplifier employing the  defects in Ga(In)NAs alloys, capable of amplifying a weak spin signal up to 27 times with a high cut-off frequency of 1 GHz. We further showed that the defectmediated spin amplification effect could turn the GaNAs alloy into an efficient RT optical spin detector. This enabled us to reliably conduct in-depth spin injection studies across a semiconductor heterointerface at RT. We found a strong reduction of electron spin polarization after optical spin injection from a GaAs layer into an adjacent GaNAs layer. This observation was attributed to severe spin loss across the heterointerface due to structural inversion asymmetry and probably also interfacial point defects. Finally, we went beyond the generation of strongly polarized electron spins. In Paper IX we focused on an interesting aspect of using strongly polarized electron spins to induce strong nuclear spin polarization at RT, relevant to solid-state quantum computation using a defect nuclear spin of long spin memory as a quantum bit (qubit). By combining the spin filtering effect and the HFI, we obtained a sizeable nuclear spin polarization of ~15% at RT that could be sensed by conduction electrons. This demonstrated the feasibility of controlling defect nuclear spins via conduction electrons even at RT, the first case ever being demonstrated in a semiconductor.

The goal with this degree project was to find a solution with different components to the existing design, or find a sensor with similar function that could replace the previous design of the sensor finger.

Our work has been limited by ESAB due to the user friendly mechanical design of the previous sensor finger. After examining different sensors we choose to use strain gages as sensors for the mechanical sensor finger. With this choice we also needed to suggest a theoretical design for a mechanical attachment of the sensor finger.

We have designed two separate Wheatstone bridges with separate instrumental amplifiers (INA125). The output signals from the bridges are relatively small and need to be amplified around 2000 times.

The zero balancing of the bridges has been done manually with potentiometers but we have also suggested a solution where the zero balancing can be performed by a push-button. The button is placed where you cannot push it unintentionally.

The result of this degree project is a circuit on a veroboard, a designing proposal for the attachment and the sensor finger.

In order to further develop this design it would be necessary to build a prototype to evaluate its life span and find the optimal sensitivity.

This PhD thesis analyses the ways in which technological and scientific knowledge was acquired, circulated and employed in Renaissance Europe, and how technological innovation was practiced at the dawn of the Scientific Revolution. Janello Torriani (b. Cremona ca.1500 – d. Toledo 1585) was a craftsman from a minor centre of Northern Italy. In his late forties he was employed in the capital of the duchy of Milan at the service of the imperial governor. This was the first prestigious stage of a career that later took him to the imperial court of Charles V and later that of the Spanish ruler Philip II: a very late but remarkable professional blooming. Torriani created a number of technological devices that were hailed by contemporaries as mechanical marvels, such as the Microcosm, the most complex and compact planetary clock ever built, and the first gigantic machine: the Toledo Device (a 300 meter complex structure that could elevate water for a good 100 meters)1. Moreover, Torriani participated in the Gregorian reform of the calendar, contributing a tract and mathematical instruments for calculus. Further mathematical and mechanical endeavours included a waterworks-survey, celestial observations, automata and other curious clockworks. Historiography so far has mainly investigated Torriani as part of a narrative of Renaissance genius. The category of genius has been extremely popular in accounts dealing with the problematic and multi-faceted notion of Renaissance. Yet, it has little to offer when it comes to research that seeks to construct the social and cultural contexts in which careers as rich in innovation and craftsmanship as Torriani’s was, were moulded. This thesis aims to observe an existing topic - Janello Torriani’s career - through a new perspective. My PhD is thus intended as an essay in the social and cultural history of knowledge, and especially in its declination of technological innovation.

Résumé :
AbstractOn 15 October 1970, at 11:50AM, part of the West Gate Bridge in Melbourne, span 10-11 of 367 feet length, disintegrated and triggered the collapse of the bridge. Thirty-five men were killed in the disaster. The bridge was still under construction, all those killed were workers or engineers employed on the construction site. The investigation of a Royal Commission revealed a mismatch between an ambitious structural design of the bridge plus an unconventional method of erection and a fragmented, conflict-ridden construction management whose detrimental effects remained unchecked by public authorities. Regulatory powers and enforcement competence had been delegated to a QUANGO—a quasi-non-governmental organization—which diluted responsibility structures and decisively weakened the coordination and control capacity of the agency.

Résumé :
During the eighteenth century Portugal developed a large military construction process in the Ultramarine possessions, in order to compete with the new born colonial trading empires, mainly Great Britain, Netherlands and France. The Portuguese colonial seashores of the Atlantic Ocean (since the middle of the sixteenth century) and of the Indian Ocean (from the end of the first quarter of the seventeenth century) were repeatedly coveted, and the huge Portuguese colony of Brazil was also harassed in the south during the eighteenth century –here due to problems in a diplomatic and military dispute with Spain, related with the global frontiers’ design of the Iberian colonies. The Treaty of Madrid (1750) had specifically abrogated the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) between Portugal and Spain, and the limits of Brazil began to be defined on the field. Macapá is situated in the western branch of Amazonas delta, in the singular cross-point of the Equator with Tordesillas Meridian, and the construction of a big fortress began in the year of 1764 under direction of Enrico Antonio Galluzzi, an Italian engineer contracted by Portuguese administration to the Commission of Delimitation, which arrived in Brazil in 1753. In consequence of the political panorama in Europe after the Seven Years War (1756-1763), a new agreement between Portugal and Spain was negotiated (after the regional conflict in South America), achieved to the Treaty of San Idefonso (1777), which warranted the integration of the Amazonas basin. It was strategic the decision to build, one year before, the huge fortress of Príncipe da Beira, arduously realized in the most interior of the sub-continent, 2000 km from the sea throughout the only possible connection by rivers navigation. Domingos Sambucetti, another Italian engineer, was the designer and conductor of the jobs held on the right bank of Guaporé River, future frontier’s line with Bolivia. São José de Macapá and Príncipe da Beira are two big fortresses Vauban’ style, built under very similar projects by two Italian engineers (each one dead with malaria in the course of building), with the observance of the most exigent rules of the treaties of military architecture.

Résumé :
The European Higher Education Area (EHEA) defines the competences for professional practice of a Telecommunications Engineer. The School of Telecommunication Engineering of the Universitat Politècnica de València (Valencia, Spain) provides an integrated education program consisting of a Graduate (GITST) + Master (MUIT). The GITST course offers four specialization tracks: Electronics, Telematics, Communication Systems and Multimedia for the proper acquisition of knowledge and competences of the future Telecommunications Engineers. In 2018, the graduate program has implemented a structural change in the organization of subjects for reinforcing important skills, in which a course on digital electronics design and verification (Integration of Digital Systems, ISDIGI) has been transformed into a core subject of the study plan. In this paper, we describe the methodology and adaptation of ISDIGI (i.e. a project-based learning intermediate HDL course that includes design and verification abilities) to the new GITST Curriculum. In addition, this paper describes the process of moving from specialized to core subject.

Résumé :
According to the CDIO (Conceive-Design-Implement-Operate) Syllabus, apart from technical knowledge, labour markets are demanding engineers with personal, interpersonal and system building skills. The current educational system, however, is based on teaching theoretical concepts rather than on practical activities. Makerspaces could become a bridge between universities and industry, particularly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) carriers. Makerspaces, also known as hackerspaces, hack labs and fab labs, are open-access spaces where a community shares tools, machines and knowledge in order to implement an idea. This communication reviews the makerspaces at the world’s top 10 engineering universities and three of the most recognized in Spain. The qualitative data was collected through the universities’ websites. We observed that most of the reviewed universities have outstanding makerspaces for engineering students, generally open to the entire university community. In Spain, the ‘Maker UPV’ was found exceptionally successful in activities and projects performed in spite of their lack of material resources. Lastly, the authors describe their experience implementing a campus makerspace at the University of La Rioja, sharing interesting information about the organization, budget, funding and activities.

Résumé :
The situation of women in the engineering world has different aspects. On the one hand, it can be stated that women are well received in certain areas of the technological world, and they are very integrated into academia. In other areas, such as the world of industrial business, recognition is more complex being those less open environments. Last century, the woman who broke the taboo in Spain was the mayor of Bilbao and the first industrial engineer graduated in Spain in 1912, Pilar Careaga. By means of her public presence, her message could reach the general society, but as something exceptional. At the Faculty of Engineering in Bilbao, the first female Industrial Engineer was Pilar Ipiña, graduated in 1965. Fifty-three years had passed. Women in Engineering, more than a century later, remain a clear minority. While it is true that the presence of women in engineering schools is socially fully accepted, it is no less true that many young women dismiss the possibility of approaching that world from an early age. The lack of benchmarks seems to be a clear factor. Many of the engineers who are being interviewed in the search for ideas to motivate girls and young women, end up seeing lacks of references when asked about it. While the experience of being a woman in such a traditionally male field has lights and shadows, reflect of what can be seen in different referenced studies, a positive message must be transmitted, as this has been the experience of both engineering students and workers in academia or in the business world. Proposing solutions to smooth out the differences in numbers between men and women in the world of Engineering and Science requires knowing the causes, in order to be able to carry out actions that lead to collecting women's talent and with the appropriate training give it all the value that can achieve, both in the improvement of society as a whole and in the personal development of each of them. The aim is to achieve real equal choice between women and men and put everyone at the service of a better society. Equality is theoretically achieved, but it can still be improved.

Résumé :
As U.S. states are planning and designing for future nationwide and regional high-speed rail (HSR) services, an important issue to consider is where to locate stations. Station location determination is critical not only because it influences the perceived utility of the HSR services and can greatly influence ridership, but also due to its impact upon the local and regional transportation mobility, land use, and urban economic development. The main purpose of this paper is to provide information to HSR planners, engineers, and decision-makers in the U.S. on the practices of other countries in locating HSR stations. This paper examines HSR stations in several of the earliest countries which built HSR infrastructures: France, Spain, and Japan, to analyze how HSR station locations were selected, as well as the applicability of those methodologies in the planning process for the United States.

Résumé :
This research project was a collaboration of several research organizations, product manufacturers and fire service representatives to examine hazards associated with residential flooring systems to improve firefighter safety. Funding for this project was provided through the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Grant Program. The main objective of this study was to improve firefighter safety by increasing the level of knowledge on the response of residential flooring systems to fire. Several types (or series) of experiments were conducted and analyzed to expand the body of knowledge on the impact of fire on residential flooring systems. The results of the study have been prepared to provide tactical considerations for the fire service to enable improved decision making on the fire scene. Experiments were conducted to examine several types of floor joists including, dimensional lumber, engineered I-joists, metal plate connected wood trusses, steel C-joists, castellated I-joists and hybrid trusses. Experiments were performed at multiple scales to examine single floor system joists in a laboratory up through a full floor system in an acquired structure. Applied load, ventilation, fuel load, span and protection methods were altered to provide important information about the impact of these variables to structural stability and firefighter safety. There are several tactical considerations that result from this research that firefighters can use immediately to improve their understanding, safety and decision making when sizing up a fire in a one or two family home. This report summarizes the results from each of the experimental series and provides discussion and conclusions of the results.
