<p>During the 1990s a 'war' was fought over climate change between the author and some (not all) of his senior colleagues at the World Energy Council. There were two strands to his work: serious energy analysis and consideration of possible futures; and potential climate change. In the latter role he came up against stringent and often ill-informed criticism of his work and actions. Ill-informed because the critics did not appear to be aware of the serious and widely supported (within the WEC) published works of the WEC; and were frequently incorrect in what they claimed the author had said or written, or wrongly attributed to him actions by others outside the WEC. The record of relevant WEC publications, and the attacks made by those seeking to deny climate change or obfuscate debate on the related issues from the American Petroleum Institute, Global Climate Coalition, and US Climate Council, are related here. Everything here is based upon written records (unpublished as well as published) in the author's possession and his recollections.</p>

Résumé :
<p>Most of the research in distributed generation focuses on power flow optimization and control algorithm development and related fields. However, microgrids are evolving on multiple levels with respect to the chemical processes used to manufacture the underlying technologies, deployment strategies, physical architecture (which is important to the economic factor) as well as environmental impact mitigation of microgrids. Special use cases and paradigms of deploying Distributed Generation (DG) in harmony with agricultural or decorative purposes for existing spaces are emerging, propelled by research in frontiers that the DG engineer would benefit from being aware of. Also, offshore photovoltaic (PV) has emerged as an increasingly important research area. Many nascent technologies and concepts have not been techno-economically analyzed to determine and optimize their benefits. These provide ample research opportunities from a big-picture perspective regarding microgrid development. This also provides the avenue for research in distributed generation from a physical integration and space use perspective. This study reviews a selection of developments in microgrid technology with the themes of manufacturing technology, optimal deployment techniques in physical spaces, and impact mitigation approaches to the deployment of renewable energy from a qualitative perspective.</p>

Résumé :
This paper argues that energy consideration should be central to software development. It speculates that including the notion of energy awareness in programming language design for domain specific languages (DSLs) is a novel way in which energy-aware and energy-efficient applications can be developed. It outlines the design criteria and rationale for using a language-focused approach for energy-awareness. It proposes Lantern, a DSL for supporting energy awareness in Cyber-Physical Systems software development. Lantern allows the development of applications that better manage and reduce the carbon footprint of devices. The design of Lantern is aimed at supporting the general development of Cyber-Physical Systems. This paper focuses on the scenario of smart homes, using statically defined locations within a specified environment.

Résumé :
Abstract. In order to enable pilots to better maintain energy awareness and energy management in manual flight, a new concept has been proposed, which transfers the demand control principle of fly-by-wire control laws also to the control of thrust. It includes a total-energy-related augmented thrust controller combined with a modified cockpit instrumentation enriched by specific energy displays. In order to empirically evaluate the human performance consequences of this new approach, an experimental study was conducted in a flight simulator investigating its effects on pilots’ performance, workload, and situation awareness. A total of 24 commercial aircraft pilots performed a landing and approach on a complex flight trajectory with and without the new system elements. The results confirm the expected beneficial effects of the new system on flight precision and lowered effort involved in thrust control as compared with conventional raw data flying. No negative side effects, for example, impaired situation awareness, were found.

Résumé :
To meet the larger demand for electricity supply, Malaysia needs to achieve two main psychosocial conditions, among others—having the awareness of renewable energy and demonstrating energy-conserving behavior. To examine whether Malaysia has met these two conditions, we recruited 225 participants (n = 109 women, n = 113 men, n = 3 did not indicate) to complete a series of questionnaires. The results showed that the public was aware of the option of solar energy but was not ready to install solar photovoltaic panels after being told the cost incurred. Furthermore, the public did not show satisfying energy-conserving behaviors. To boost the installation of solar power, increasing the public’s energy knowledge and implementing policies to reduce the installation cost might be helpful. These findings highlighted Malaysia’s low readiness for solar power and shed some light on what needs to be done to be better prepared for solar power.

Résumé :
Global economic growth is accompanied by increased energy demand, thus conventional fuels such as coal, oil and gas, which are the primary energy sources, are gradually being depleted. At the same time, the combustion of conventional fuel for energy production causes serious adverse effects on the environment and contributes to climate change due to the emitted greenhouse gases. For the above reasons, most of the developed and developing countries especially during the last decades, have introduced various incentives for the greater penetration of renewable energy sources (RES) in all sectors of the economy. Concerning the building sector, several measures have been adopted, including the promotion of energy efficiency and energy saving. A significant proportion of the building stock are the school buildings where students and teachers spend a significant proportion of their daily time. Teachers' attitudes and views, especially the school unit managers concerning the use of RES in schools, are important in the effort to rationalize and control energy use. This study was conducted through a structured questionnaire applied to a sample of 510 school managers in Greece's primary and secondary education. The school unit managerial role for the case of Greek schools is performed by the school principal who has both administrative and educational duties. Statistical analysis included the application of Friedman's test and hypothesis test on questions concerning school manager environmental perceptions and energy-saving habits. According to the results, Greek school managers have a high degree of environmental sensitivity, since 97.6 % agreed or strongly agreed that the main concern should focus on energy saving. Furthermore, 71% of the respondent reported to have good knowledge on solar energy, followed by 64% on wind energy while only 34% are knowledgeable on biomass. Almost all the respondents (99%) agreed that it is important to provide more RES-orientated education through the taught curricula. Concerning energy saving behaviour, around 90% reported that they switch off the lights when leaving the classroom and they close the windows when the air-condition is operating. Hypothesis tests revealed a relationship between the school managers' ecological beliefs, the energy saving habits in the school environment, and the recognition of the importance of environmental education. Conclusions highlighted the need to intensify environmental education programs in the school environment concerning RES in schools. This will lead to a higher level of environmental awareness of both teachers and students and therefore to a more dynamic behaviour towards the effort to “greenify” the school environment.

Résumé :
This paper examines the continuity of Korean energy policy for the last 30 years and consistency of energy policy with other energy-related policies. Because energy policy environment is characterized by high level of uncertainty, long-range planning as well as skillful adaptation to changing environments are both needed. But there are costs the two different approaches must pay. Energy sector has its close connections with economic and environmental sectors. Energy policy-maker should find ways to minimize any conflict between related policies. Economic planning must be designed awaring of the constraints energy sector faces, and energy sector planning inevitably affects environmental quality. And priority among related policy areas must be adjusted according to changing situations. This paper calls policy-makers' attention to consistent policy process in the midst of favorable international energy market and emergence of green movement.

We examine the problem of maximizing data collection from an energy-limited store-and-extract wireless sensor network, which is analogous to the maximum lifetime problem of interest in continuous data-gathering sensor networks. One significant difference is that this problem requires attention to “data-awareness” in addition to “energy-awareness”. We formulate the maximum data extraction problem as a linear program and present a 1 + ω iterative approximation algorithm for it. As a practical distributed implementation we develop a faster greedy heuristic for this problem that uses an exponential metric based on the approximation algorithm. We then show through simulation results that the greedy heuristic incorporating this exponential metric performs near-optimally (within 1 to 10% of optimal, with low overhead) and significantly better than other energy aware routing approaches (developed mainly through intuition), particularly when nodes are heterogeneous in their energy and data availability.

Résumé :
Consider the following illumination problem: given a stage represented by a line segment L and a set of light sources represented by a set of points S in the plane, assign powers to the light sources such that every point on the stage receives a sufficient amount – e.g. one unit – of light while minimizing the overall power consumption. Under the assumption that the amount of light arriving from a fixed light source decreases rapidly with the distance from the light source, this becomes an interesting optimization problem. We propose to reconsider the classical illumination problems as known from computational geometry literature under this light attenuation model. This paper examines the simple problem introduced above and presents different solutions, based on convex optimization, discretization and linear programming, as well as a purely combinatorial approximation algorithm. Some experimental results are also provided.

Résumé :
Nowadays, wireless sensor networks are becoming increasingly important in several sectors including industry, transportation, environment and medicine. This trend is reinforced by the spread of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies in almost all sectors. Autonomous energy supply is thereby an essential aspect as it decides the flexible positioning and easy maintenance, which are decisive for the acceptance of this technology, its wide use and sustainability. Significant improvements made in the last years have shown interesting possibilities for realizing energy-aware wireless sensor nodes (WSNs) by designing manifold and highly efficient energy converters and reducing energy consumption of hardware, software and communication protocols. Using only a few of these techniques or focusing on only one aspect is not sufficient to realize practicable and market relevant solutions. This paper therefore provides a comprehensive review on system design for battery-free and energy-aware WSN, making use of ambient energy or wireless energy transmission. It addresses energy supply strategies and gives a deep insight in energy management methods as well as possibilities for energy saving on node and network level. The aim therefore is to provide deep insight into system design and increase awareness of suitable techniques for realizing battery-free and energy-aware wireless sensor nodes.

Résumé :
In order to optimize the wireless sensor network coverage, this paper designs a coverage optimization strategy for wireless sensor network (EACS) based on energy-aware. Under the assumption that the geographic positions of sensor nodes are available, the proposed strategy consists of energy-aware and network coverage adjustment. It is restricted to conditions such as path loss, residual capacity and monitored area and according to awareness ability of sensors, it would adjust the monitored area, repair network hole and kick out the redundant coverage. The purpose is to balance the energy distribution of working nodes, reduce the number of “dead” nodes and balance network energy consumption. As a result, the network lifetime is expanded. Simulation results show that: EACS effectively reduces the number of working nodes, improves network coverage, lowers network energy consumption while ensuring the wireless sensor network coverage and connectivity, so as to balance network energy consumption.

Résumé :
Water utilities are aware of the water-energy loss relevance in supply systems. However, they still mainly focus on daily water loss control (real and apparent losses), without considering the impact on embedded energy. Moreover, they are mostly concerned with the economic dimension and, in most cases, tend to disregard the impact that water-energy loss may have on the quality of service, communication with the consumers, social awareness, water quality and environment. This paper focuses on the application of the developed and tested AWARE-P infrastructure asset management (IAM) methodology to improve water-energy loss management in water supply systems, while demonstrating the main benefits from implementing an integrated approach for water losses and related energy assessment. Results show that indeed the participating iPerdas utilities were able to define tactical measures leading to a more efficient and sustainable service.
