Résumé :
Texts often express the writer’s emotional state, and it was shown that emotion information has potential for hate speech detection and analysis. In this work, we present a methodology for quantitative analysis of emotion in text. We define a simple, yet effective metric for an overall emotional charge of text based on the NRC Emotion Lexicon and Plutchik’s eight basic emotions. Using this methodology, we investigate the emotional charge of content with socially unacceptable discourse (SUD), as a distinct and potentially harmful type of text which is spreading on social media. We experiment with the proposed method on a corpus of Facebook comments, resulting in four datasets in two languages, namely English and Slovene, and two discussion topics, LGBT+ rights, and the European Migrants crisis. We reveal that SUD content is significantly more emotional than non-SUD comments. Moreover, we show differences in the expression of emotions depending on the language, topic, and target of the comments. Finally, to underpin the findings of the quantitative investigation of emotions, we perform a qualitative analysis of the corpus, exploring in more detail the most frequent emotional words of each emotion, for all four datasets. The qualitative analysis shows that the source of emotions in SUD texts heavily depends on the topic of discussion, with substantial overlaps between languages.

The article explores the different types of discourse from the perspective of the emotional atmosphere's substrate on the therapeutic session. The author selects some of the emotional discourses and describes their connection with the experience of early childhood relationships with significant adults. This concept of the emotional discourse allows not to determine the type of the client personality, but to deal with the relations the client establishes. So the therapist focuses on the process of therapeutic communication and, moreover, in the "language's" characteristics of the contact between the partiсipants.

Résumé :
The article considers peculiarities of verbalization of emotions in German football fans’ discourse. Social, psychological, biological relevance of emotions in a person’s world view provides vivid interest of specialists, including linguists, in studying language means to objectify emotional concepts. Despite the fact that the range of the studied aspects is urgent and is thoroughly examined, certain communicative domains organized by sports fans remain insufficiently explored, although according to some scientists, it is their subculture that is characterized by distinctive emotional background, «emotionally tense» attitude to events, phenomena, facts, people being under their magnifying glass. The article provides cases of verbalization of emotions through metaphoric descriptions. The most active source domains are determined that represent emotional concepts (war, colour, nature, equipment, space, etc.), their direc- tion vectors are identified, as well s objects and situations inducing emotions in a fans’ community. It can be considered productive for the futher study to analyze linguistic (metaphoric) conceptualization of emotions in football fans’ discourse in different ethnic and language cultures to elicit national character in building metaphoric patterns of people’s emotional sphere. The article makes use of discourse, component and conceptual analysis, building metaphoric patterns, clas- sification, lexicographical and comparative methods.

Résumé :
Alexithymia is a personality trait characterized by difficulties identifying and describing emotions. Suffering from a deficit in the cognitive processing of emotions, alexithymic individuals are unable to symbolize their emotions. Even though emotional elaboration is one of the core aspects of alexithymia, it has not been thoroughly investigated. Few studies have reported quantitative features of alexithymic’s discourse. However, the qualitative properties of alexithymic emotional discourse and the difference in symbolization between positive and negative emotions remain to be investigated. This study aims to examine how individuals with alexithymia symbolize their subjective emotional experiences by defining the characteristics of their discourse related to positive and negative emotions. A sample of 9 clinically alexithymic individuals rated on the TAS-20 was interviewed about a typical experience of joy and sadness. Data were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Themes associated with sadness revealed that alexithymic individuals tend to avoid contact with sadness. They also perceived sadness as an imposed state by external events. Themes associated with joy revealed that this emotion seemed easier to share with peers. Moreover, joy seemed easier to express and symbolize for alexithymic individuals than sadness. This comprehensive description of alexithymic emotional discourse allows to better understand the symbolization of emotions according to their valence and to better recognize alexithymic ways of expressing emotions.

Résumé :
Abstract Discourse practices are investigated in English and Polish online comments which display different degrees of linguistic extremism. The present contribution identifies the contexts and targets of such practices and argues that hate speech is conditioned by culture-driven emotional experience and emotion expression profiles prevailing in particular societies. The discussion focuses on Polish and UK English emotionality and on relevant cultural models of the negative emotion clusters identified in Polish and English online political and social comments in posts collected between 2013 and 2018 on topics connected mainly, though not exclusively, with migration and the perception of the Other. First, the article shows that there are differences in the display and expression of emotions between English and Polish discourses, the latter being more negatively explicit and more often addressing the current online interactant. Second, in both groups, two opposing camps are identified. Finally, the rise in meaning and expressiveness of radicalization is observed in both English and Polish across the investigated period.

Résumé :
In this article I revisit the idea of literary ethnography (proposed by Van De Poel-Knottnerus and Knottnerus, 1994 ) as a method for investigating social phenomena constituted principally through literature. I report the use of this method to investigate the topic of evidence-based healthcare, EBHC. EBHC is a field of discourse much built upon a dichotomy between rationality and emotionality. In this context literary ethnography, a particular type of discourse analysis, is valuable for allowing researchers to bring the emotional currents of technical-rational discourse into conscious awareness. In such discourses, emotions are not written out by name. The researcher must discern emotional phenomena by experiencing the discourse, and (try to) bring them into intelligible expression. As I clarify this process I develop Van de Poel-Knottnerus and Knottnerus’ method theoretically, look to destabilise the rationality-emotionality dichotomy foundational to discourse around EBHC, and so transgress its conventional lines of thought.

Résumé :
Human beings experience all sorts of emotions: sadness, fear, joy, anger, etc. which they communicate to their surrounding through language. As such, emotions are embedded in culture and thus differ from one person to another according to the cultural context and specific situations or events that trigger them. They can be expressed in action, for instance boxing in order to evacuate once anger, or in writing through language. Language is thus relevant for emotion and plays a key role in expressing emotions. There thus exists a close link between emotion and language. This partly explains why literary works, be it drama, prose or poetry are highly characterised by emotional discourse. This is because writers in order to educate, to sensitise, to entertain or to get the support of readers on an issue, evoke their emotions by the use of linguistic tools such as tone, diction, figurative languages, etc. However, despite the pervasiveness of emotions in literary texts, the translation of emotional discourse remains a challenging task. The reason being that, although emotions have been broadly searched in the domain of psychology, it remains under investigated in the domain of translation studies. As compared to other fields where the areas of investigation of emotions are types of emotions, emotions vocabulary in a specific culture, the measurement of the intensity of emotions, the cross-cultural similarities of emotion words, emotion meaning across culture, emotional problems, the manifestation of emotions, and so on, most translation scholars fail to investigate translation strategies which can be suitable to render emotions conveyed in a text. Some of these scholars limit themselves to the difficulties posed by the translation of emotions, and to finding equivalence in emotion words that exist between languages. This study thus aims at investigating translation strategies suitable to render the meaning of emotional discourse embedded in a literary work and their effects in the translation process, while focusing on the stylistic signals of emotions in a literary work more precisely in Djaïli Amadou Amal’s Munyal: Les Larmes de la Patience, and their translatability. It thus provides grounds for the translation of emotions, and comes up with translation strategies adapted for their translation. It also sheds light on what should be considered as the translation unit during their rendering. For this purpose, the emotions concerned in this study are anger, fear and sadness; and the selected emotional cultural phenomena dealt with in this research cut across borders. Besides, the study was grounded on the polysystem theory backed up by few literary and language theories. Also, it opted for a mixed approach. This approach enabled the collection of qualitative data through documentary research and textual analysis carried out both at the macro-textual level and at the micro-textual level; and quantitative data through statistics. The results of the investigation showed that stylistic signals of emotions in a literary text are dialogue, the author naming and describing emotions experienced by characters, characters’ choice of words, the description of characters’ facial expression, characters’ tone, the narrator tone and characters’ attitude. In addition to this, the study also revealed that translation strategies proposed by Chesterman (1997) more precisely literal translation, information change and explicitness change can be used to render the meaning of emotional discourse embedded in a text. These strategies can also be combined and used. Furthermore, the investigations also highlighted that in translating emotional discourse, a translator can either be “source-oriented” or “target-oriented”; or both. Given that both source and target-oriented strategies were used. Besides, the results also showed that in translating emotional discourse the translator should take into account sentences in their entirety and not isolated terms.

Résumé :
The article deals with methods of verbalization of various emotions, considered on the material of authentic texts related to the political discourse of Germany. There is a predominance of the emotional component over the rational one in modern political communication, therefore there is a need for a comprehensive study of the technique of nominating various emotional states. The purpose of the analysis is to identify the features of the semantic aspect of the linguistic representation of emotions in German-language political texts. This study is carried out using the method of semantic modelling according to five parameters reflecting the main types of syntagmatic relations between the meanings of words within one speech segment (a word combination or a sentence): «signs of emotion», «activity of emotion», «manifestation of emotion», «carrier of emotion», «cause of emotion». The following conclusions were obtained in the course of this study: the parameters «signs of emotion» and «activity of emotion» are the most productive within the framework of German political discourse; within the parameters mentioned above, the phenomenon of metaphorization is noted, which can also be considered as one of the productive means of verbalization of emotions; according to the type of evaluation sign, the predominance of negative emotions is observed in the political discourse of Germany. The results of the research conducted in this article can be used in research and teaching activities related to the study of the features of the emotional aspect of modern communication from a linguistic point of view.

Résumé :
Students at Higher Educations face a world in need of help to create sustainable solutions for complex systems. But still, European design-graduates finish their studies with a narrow concentration in design skills and lack competencies in order to cope with the complex reality, as well as students lack attachment to the teaching in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). In order to change this, educators need to acknowledge the students' personal, motivational and emotional elements before de-signing the courses. This article is based on two new discourses in both entrepreneurial and design didactic research – and how they could be connected. The first is “emotional learning” and “emotional design” – regarding how emotions impact the student’s learning process’ in Educations for Sustainable Development (ESD). Emotions affect the student's learning process and their health and well-being (Pekrun, 2014, p. 28). The other discourse is how the use of value-driven emotional entrepreneurial didactics, based on the connection between emotionally influencing actions/events and the development of entrepreneurial competencies, can present a new emotionally based understanding of the value of altruistic (sustainable) outcomes within entrepreneurial educations (Lackeus, 2020). This paper presents, using one of the experimental methods - comparative - of Research through Design, two emotional tools: “Design for Change - Yggdrasill” from VIA Design, Denmark and “Emotional Analogous Data” from ELISAVA, Barcelona. The first results indicate a need for emotional education, which has an impact on ESD and their development as professionals. For these reasons, both emotional tools presented above can contribute to empowering students and teachers to improve Sustainable Design Educations.

Résumé :
This study analyzes how employees at a university recreation center discursively construct their experiences of emotional labor, how they conceptualize such behavior in terms of displaying unfelt emotions and faking in good and bad faith, and what these discursive constructions reveal about their perceptions of authenticity. The findings demonstrate that workers construct emotional labor as a natural ability and as performing a role. People who construct emotional labor as a natural ability depict themselves as the controller of their workplace emotion. They display unfelt emotions in good faith when they do so to uphold another’s face, and they believe that they possess a true self. Employees who construct emotional labor as performing a role view their supervisors as controller of their workplace emotion. They fake emotions in good faith when doing so uphold their own face, and they fake in bad faith when it upholds the face of a co-worker who they feel needs to be disciplined. These people do not possess a sense of authentic self. They view themselves as multi-faceted and they say that they use social comparison to determine how to behave in particular situations. These findings reveal previously unexplored complexities in scholars’ conceptions of emotional labor and authenticity.

Whiteley, Sara. « Text world theory and the emotional experience of literary discourse ». Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2010. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/15112/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis investigates the emotional experience of literary discourse from a cognitivepoetic perspective. In doing so, it combines detailed Text World Theory analysis with an examination of naturalistic reader response data in the form of book group discussions and internet postings. Three novels by contemporary author Kazuo Ishiguro form the analytical focus of this investigation: The Remains of the Dt!)' (1989), The Unconso/ed (1995) and Never Let Me Go (2005), chosen due to their thematic engagement with emotion and their ability to evoke emotion in readers. The central aims of this thesis are to develop cognitive-poetic understanding of the emotional experience of literature, and to advance cognitive-poetic and literary-critical understanding of the works of Ishiguro. As a result of the analytical investigations of the three novels, this thesis proposes several enhancements to the discourse-world level of the Text World Theory framework. In particular, this thesis argues for a more detailed and nuanced account of deictic projection and identification, proposes a means of including readers' hopes and preferences in text-world analyses, and reconceptualises processes of knowledge activation as inherently emotional. Detailed, cognitive-poetic analyses of Ishiguro's novels elucidate literary-critical observations regarding Ishiguro's shifting style, and present new insights into the cognitive and emotional aspects of the interaction between the texts and their readers. This thesis aims primarily to be a contribution to the fields of stylistics and cognitive poetics. It approaches this theoretically through the application and enhancement of cognitive poetic frameworks, analytically through the investigation of Ishiguro, and methodologically through the utilisation of reader response data in order to direct and support the investigations. However, incidental contributions are also made to cognitive and social emotion theories, and the discussion raises several suggestions for continued interdisciplinary research in the future.

Résumé :
This thesis reports on a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of the SEL policy makers’ conversations taking place in England and Wales during the New Labour period. The research sets out to offer a critical explanation of Welsh and English SEL policy thinking and doing and how the SEL policy discourse worked to privilege certain ideas and topics and speakers and exclude others. Thinking with theory and building on the work of Apple (2007) and Ball (2012) I draw on the contemporary tenets of critical theory to examine the (dominant) English and (often subjugated) Welsh discourse(s) to historically locate and contextualise the mainstream SEL literature within the ideological discourse of neoliberalism (Harvey, 2005). This neoliberalism is one which unequivocally drives policy in the direction of markets and propounds a thorough marketization of educational provisions and practices (Lynch, 2006).Drawing on data from a series of eight semi structured interviews with key national level policymakers, alongside documentary analysis, I argue that New Labour in England, particularly in its second term, through a particular policy network and the SEAL programme, adopted SEL as a tool of managerialism designed to shape and govern a self-managing, entrepreneurial, placid subject in the service of the neoliberal economic model. Alternatively I contend that the Welsh assembly adopted SEL as a practical and progressive tool for developing a more equal society and a more egalitarian and democratic modus operandi of social justice (rooted in normative precepts of the collective and of community cohesion). This “Welsh” approach was powerfully intertwined with the devolution programme and notions of the child as a democratic citizen with agency and rights. In both England and Wales this understanding and application of SEL was intimately connected with national identity and notions of nationhood. This work was undertaken using a CDA approach. It employed Fairclough’s Three Dimensional Model (1992) of Critical Discourse Analysis and engaged with the subject and data through the three lenses of text (the written and spoken word), discursive practice (the production, distribution and consumption of the text) and social practice (the wider social, political and economic forces shaping the discourse). By illuminating through CDA the ideologically infused discursive claims to truth and value, which underpinned the rhetoric and substance of the UK (Anglo-centric) Government’s version of SEL in schools and that of the devolved Welsh Government, my findings reveal the broader scale ideas and political-ontological truth claims which drove the development of SEL across England and Wales during the New Labour period; the research therein unveils the implicit but reified notions of childhood and children’s wellbeing which were central to SEL development at both the national and devolved levels; it identifies the unspoken and latent ideological projects which were core to the production of divergent SEL discourses in each of the countries; and finally, it reveals the influence which national tradition, domestic power structures, cross-societal inequities and the subjugation of certain identities have had on the conceptualisation and practical delivery of SEL in England and Wales. The study concludes that the relationship between language and political ideology in England and Wales during the New Labour years powerfully shaped the SEL policy discourse. In England the result of this was a thin version of SEL co-opted into the service of the neoliberal marketplace. In Wales a similar outcome occurred but only after a very different contextualised and transformative version of SEL was relinquished due to the invasive neoliberal forces attacking Welsh education.

Résumé :
This research is intended to demonstrate that bilingual speakers exhibit nonverbal behavior and emotional expressions that affect their ability to communicate in their intended manner. I argue that these changes are linked to the emotional ties to experiences in those languages. The nonverbal traits that appear when bilingual speakers share personal narratives in different languages are measured through facial recognition and emotion sensory software for evidentiary support in establishing intent versus actual self-presentation. New methods of self-analysis are discussed and utilized to determine if the speakers are inherently aware of these changes or can notice them through cross linguistic self-analyses.

Mohadien, Feroza. « An exploratory study of the emotional experiences of a parent of a transgendered child ». University of the Western Cape, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/4133.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Magister Psychologiae - MPsych
This qualitative, exploratory study comprises a discourse analysis of the emotional experiences of the parent of a transgendered child. The primary aim of the study was to detail the emotional experiences encountered by the parents of a transgendered child within the South African context, with a focus on how discourse is used to make sense of experiences. The research employed a single case-study, and data was collected via three semi-structured interviews. The data was analysed within a social constructionist framework, using discourse analysis (as per ten stages suggested by Potter and Wetherell, 1987). The literature review highlights various issues regarding the plight of transgendered children and their loved ones in trans-phobic societies, most of which are reflected in the findings. The pertinent themes were divided into four sections: “Discourse of Shaping”, “Discourse of Incongruous Loss”, “Discourse of Motherhood” and “The Transformer and Transformation”. In “Discourse of ‘Shaping’”, the focus is on the parent’s ‘compelled’ reconceptualization of issues and previously accepted ‘truths’ that lie at the core of identity, namely, gender and religion. “Discourse of Incongruous Loss” shows the trauma, challenges, complexity and many ambiguities in mourning someone who is simultaneously absent and present, the same yet different. It also explores additional aspects of the loss that distinguishes it from conventional loss, such as stigmatism and discrimination, lack of support, and ensuing losses. Data reveal that the discourse of motherhood, whilst placing immense pressure on the parent, also has an empowering effect. Although the discourse of motherhood gives rise to feelings of intense self-blame and hate regarding the trans-identity of the child, and ‘dictates’ unwavering compassion, selflessness, acceptance and nurturance, it also enables a basis for resisting oppression. The final section documents how a personal, painful, private experience is linked to broader social systems. It shows how an initially harrowing experience can become empowering, as the participant not only embraces previously unaccepted ‘truths’, but is also an advocate of transgenderism and contributes to social change. It is important to note though, that although ‘victorious’, the experience is a complex one and meaning-making is on-going. Throughout, the interplay of dominant discourses and alternate discourses and their role in the personal meaning-making experience of the participant, is documented. Various creative strategies are employed in order to enable acceptance of the trans-identity and the continuous meaning-making, such as, for example, vacillating between seemingly contradictory discourses. Based on the findings that emphasises the trauma caused by a dual-definition if gender, it is suggested that a more inclusive definition of gender be adopted, such as defining gender as a spectrum or on a continuum. A redefinition of gender should also include de-pathologising gender variance, but before it is removed as diagnosis from the DSM, resources and assistance enabled by its diagnosis should be readily available so as not to create further obstacles for an already marginalised group. Awareness is vital if stigmatising and discrimination are to be reduced. It is important that awareness be generated and resources be made available, with a special focus to include disadvantaged communities. There is an urgent need for literature within a South African context so that interventions can be designed to assist parents (and loved ones) of transgendered children. This is particularly important since support from parents have consistently been found to reduce both depression and suicide rates of transgendered children. Within a diverse South African context, it is also essential to determine how gender discrimination intersects with various other forms of discrimination pertaining aspects of identity such as religion, spirituality, ethnicity, race and culture. There is a need for the South African government to address the lack with regards to implementation of gender policy with some urgency.

Résumé :
Disproportionality in special education is a long-standing issue. Some scholars have proposed group or universal screening for emotional and behavioral risk in schools as a method of addressing disproportionality. Considering previous case law, questions exist as to the legality of such screening programs in public schools. The purpose of this inquiry was to apply critical discourse analysis (CDA) to the federal case of Rhoades v. Penn-Harris (2008) to explore how court discourse reflects issues of social power and multidisciplinarity in the context of a school mental health screening program. CDA is usually interdisciplinary and focuses on explaining discourse structures related to social problems and may be applied from various theoretical frameworks and methodologies. This study used a discourse-historical approach to address the questions regarding the court’s discussion of relative power relationships, its use of argumentation strategies, and the knowledge base(s) accessed in formulating its arguments. Case study findings indicated that the court's use of various argumentation strategies in its discourse on student mental health screening presented varying potential duties and liabilities for entities and individuals involved in such programs. Additionally, although mental health screening in public schools requires an interdisciplinary approach, the court's discussion of the program litigated in Rhoades used a centrist, law-based perspective, suggesting that attempts to facilitate a pluralist or an integrationist approach to such cases may require efforts particular to legal, as opposed to clinical, practice. Recommendations for developing school mental health screening programs sensitive to issues addressed by Rhoades are provided.

Devereux, Suzanne. « How do staff in a post-16 college co-construct Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs in their setting ? : a discourse analysis ». Thesis, University of Essex, 2017. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/20510/.

Résumé :
In the past three years, the Educational Psychologist (EP) profession has undergone significant developments as a result of the revised Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Code of Practice (Department for Education, 2014). Two specific changes outlined in the SEND Code of Practice underpin the purpose of this research. The first was the change in terminology from Behaviour, Emotional and Social Development (BESD), to Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH), as one of the four broad categories of identified SEND. The second change was the extended age range of which the SEND Code of Practice now relates to: 16-25 years. The aim of this research was to explore how college staff co-constructed SEMH needs in their setting, to offer a valuable insight as to how EPs can best support similar settings in the future. Existing literature highlighted an absence of EP research on SEMH needs in post-16 education, or how college settings conceptualise SEMH needs. This study used a Discourse Analysis approach to explore how participants in a focus group (6 staff members in a sixth form college) co-constructed SEMH needs through their discourses, and a social constructionist epistemology underpinned the approach to this study. The identification of dominant and suppressed discourses illustrated variation in the staff members’ talk, suggesting the difficulties and dilemmas that arose when co-constructing a term such as SEMH. Emphasis placed on various discourses of SEMH was seen to impact on practice, highlighting the importance in identifying dominant and suppressed discourses of SEMH in educational settings. The college setting was seen to hinder and support SEMH needs simultaneously, and contrasts between disempowering and empowering students and staff to manage SEMH needs were explored. The emotional energy required to work with adolescent students was highlighted, and the extent to which discourses of pathologising students with SEMH needs functioned to defend against social anxiety, was also explored. The role of reflexivity throughout the research process, strengths and limitations of the study, and implications for EP practice were discussed.

Emotion clearly holds a primordial place in the construction of post-attack media discourse. It has been the subject of multitude studies in of linguistic research focusing both on its lexical categorization and on the various actantial structures. We proposed this reflection on the observables of the emotion of fear in journalistic discourse by ensuring that the grammatical and semio-narrative dimensions of fear and its modes of semiotization are taken into account. Our thesis, for the most part, will focus on the modalities of manifestation of the emotion caused by the attacks of November 13 in Paris in Parisian and national journalistic discourse. When the press talk about the terror of a terrorist act, it uses both informative and immersive tools. The newspaper therefore finds itself caught between firstly a constraint of credibility and objectivity and secondly a constraint of an emotional capture of the reader, i.e. the informant must tell the attack according to a discursive mode that assures a rigorous description of the facts by creating “an effect of objectivity”, and also according to a dramatizing descriptive mode expected to produce an emotion of fear. One of the challenges of this thesis is the observability of the pathemic effect when it is not based on a lexical anchoring. The present work is therefore intended to be a reflection on the verbal and non-verbal means mobilized in the discourse of the post-attack press allowing the semiotization of the emotion of fear. In other words, the thesis aims to understand the syntactic-semantic and semio-narrative parameters that can make an emotion of fear manifested when it comes to a terrorist event striking in the middle of Paris.Through this thesis, we would like to draw new avenues of reflections on the different modalities of the semiotization of emotion in the discourse of the press to decipher the content of texts and images. Not only according to the phenomenon of denotation but also according to the connotative facts

Résumé :
The study focuses on the problem of metaphorical conceptualization of emotions by means of the boot metaphor. The analysis is based on the book of J.S. Foer “Extremely loud and incredibly close”. The paper examines the social and cultural context that shapes the interpretation of shoes in general and helps verbalize the post-traumatic discourse of terrorism by using the boot metaphor. The study comments on the metaphorical repertoire of J.S Foer. The methodology includes a descriptive method and a continuous sampling method. The author concludes that the boot metaphor is productive in terms of describing various emotional states within the novel “Extremely loud and incredibly close”. Such boot metaphors are frequently used to describe negative feelings. Research implications lie in enriching the knowledge about the author’s unconventional metaphors for describing emotional state. The findings may be used in the study of the intercultural communication, in the course text theory and the theory of cognitive metaphor.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The dominant discourse of motherhood in Western civilization is of “intensive mothering”, coined by Hays in 1996, which views the mother as the primary caregiver with absolute responsibility over the child’s physical and psychological needs, promoting unrealistic standards, pressure on the mother, not to mention discrediting the benefits of a more present, engaged father, who is constructed mainly as a “bread winner” and assistant-parent. As recommended by Jansone-Ratinika (2013), the media should focus on egalitarian forms of family, thus, in doing so, gradually transforming hegemonic stereotypes in society. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to explore the various discourses of motherhood in the 21st century over a period of 5 years (2022–2018) in the family magazine “Mans Mazais” (My Little One). A critical discourse analysis has been conducted, illustrating the reproduction and challenge to the dominant discourse. The study provides insight into a variety of motherhood discourses (re)produced in the 36 issues of the family magazine “Mans Mazais” from 2018 to 2022, providing a spectrum of experiences and motherhood ideologies from “intensive mothering” to alternatives. However, the dominance of “intensive mothering” discourse is overbearing, displaying a portrait of an ideal family – a married Latvian heterosexual couple with happy children, who are cared after by the parents without any constraint in financial, emotional, physical resources, treating any challenge as a passing inconvenience.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Pseudociencia y sociedad en España. Estado de la cuestión e investigaciones recientes analyses the communicative strategies that pseudoscience uses for its social ex-pansion. This work begins with the definition of an epistemological framework that allows us to understand the phenomenon of pseudoscience and its rela-tionship with the main factors of contemporary society, such as relativism and liquidity. As a consequence of the postmodern condition, absolute certainties vanish and the possibility of not only ignoring science but even denying it be-comes real. In this sense, one of the main theses of this work is that the over-informed, postmodern and liquid society favours the expansion of pseudo-scientific discourses. Spain, like most countries, is no stranger to this expan-sion. To confirm this hypothesis, different social groups have been analysed to a) identify the degree of insertion of pseudoscience in these contexts; b) describe and categorise the communicative elements present in pseudoscien-tific discourses; and c) propose lines of action to limit the rise of these dis-courses. The present research has covered science journalists, literature, libraries, universities and different representatives of the biomedical field, such as pharmacists and healthcare professionals. Mixed methodologies have been applied: in-depth interviews to identify discursive patterns, content analysis, data analysis, and focus groups. Among the main conclusions, the followings stand out: 1) Pseudoscience uses fallacy, relativism, emotional reinforcement, opposition to a supposed dogmatic concept of science, antiquity, holistic or naturalistic arguments, among others to expand. 2) Pseudoscience normalizes its social discourse through its appearance in different contexts, in some cases openly, and in others in a discourse of risk minimization that favours its nor-malization as something innocuous. As a whole, the pseudoscientific discourse represents a challenge for scientific communication that must be addressed using all the communicative tools available.

Yatsymirska, Mariya. MODERN MEDIA TEXT : POLITICAL NARRATIVES, MEANINGS AND SENSES, EMOTIONAL MARKERS. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, février 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2022.51.11411.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The article examines modern media texts in the field of political journalism; the role of information narratives and emotional markers in media doctrine is clarified; verbal expression of rational meanings in the articles of famous Ukrainian analysts is shown. Popular theories of emotions in the process of cognition are considered, their relationship with the author’s personality, reader psychology and gonzo journalism is shown. Since the media text, in contrast to the text, is a product of social communication, the main narrative is information with the intention of influencing public opinion. Media text implies the presence of the author as a creator of meanings. In addition, media texts have universal features: word, sound, visuality (stills, photos, videos). They are traditionally divided into radio, TV, newspaper and Internet texts. The concepts of multimedia and hypertext are related to online texts. Web combinations, especially in political journalism, have intensified the interactive branching of nonlinear texts that cannot be published in traditional media. The Internet as a medium has created the conditions for the exchange of ideas in the most emotional way. Hence Gonzo’s interest in journalism, which expresses impressions of certain events in words and epithets, regardless of their stylistic affiliation. There are many such examples on social media in connection with the events surrounding the Wagnerians, the Poroshenko case, Russia’s new aggression against Ukraine, and others. Thus, the study of new features of media text in the context of modern political narratives and emotional markers is important in media research. The article focuses review of etymology, origin and features of using lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” in linguistic practice of Ukrainians results in the development of meanings and functional stylistic coloring in the usage of these units. Lexemes “cмисл (meaning)” and “сенс (sense)” are used as synonyms, but there are specific fields of meanings where they cannot be interchanged: lexeme “сенс (sense)” should be used when it comes to reasonable grounds for something, lexeme “cмисл (meaning)” should be used when it comes to notion, concept, understanding. Modern political texts are most prominent in genres such as interviews with politicians, political commentaries, analytical articles by media experts and journalists, political reviews, political portraits, political talk shows, and conversations about recent events, accompanied by effective emotional narratives. Etymologically, the concept of “narrative” is associated with the Latin adjective “gnarus” – expert. Speakers, philosophers, and literary critics considered narrative an “example of the human mind.” In modern media texts it is not only “story”, “explanation”, “message techniques”, “chronological reproduction of events”, but first of all the semantic load and what subjective meanings the author voices; it is a process of logical presentation of arguments (narration). The highly professional narrator uses narration as a “method of organizing discourse” around facts and impressions, impresses with his political erudition, extraordinary intelligence and creativity. Some of the above theses are reflected in the following illustrations from the Ukrainian media: “Culture outside politics” – a pro-Russian narrative…” (MP Gabibullayeva); “The next will be Russia – in the post-Soviet space is the Arab Spring…” (journalist Vitaly Portnikov); “In Russia, only the collapse of Ukraine will be perceived as success” (Pavel Klimkin); “Our army is fighting, hiding from the leadership” (Yuri Butusov).

Résumé :
The 21st century has witnessed a significant shift in how the concept of nationalism is understood. A political marriage between identity politics and populism has resulted in “civilizationism,” a new form of nationalism that entails an emotionally charged division of society into “the people” versus “the Other.” All too often, the divisive discourses and policies associated with civilizationalist populism produce intercommunal conflict and violence. This paper draws on a salient case study, India’s Hindutva movement, to analyze how mainstream populist political parties and grassroots organizations can leverage civilizationist populism in campaigns to mobilize political constituencies. In surveying the various groups within the Hindutva movement and conducting a discourse analysis of their leaders’ statements, the paper shows the central role of sacralized nostalgia, history, and culture in Hindutva populist civilizationism. By analyzing the contours and socio-political implications of civilizationist populism through this case study, the paper contributes to the theoretical understanding of the concept more generally.

Résumé :
The paper in question outlines the main peculiarities of the phenomenon of headlines in terms of English discourse. Headlines are thought to be a critical component of journalism and media, as they shape initial readers’ impressions of a story serving as the first point of their contact. Using a corpus of headlines from various English-language publications (to be more precise, those of The Daily Mail and The New Yorker) the paper studies the linguistic features and strategies used in them. According to the conducted analysis it has been revealed that a range of linguistic devices, such as puns, alliteration, and rhyme are typical for headlines the use of which is justified by the desire to grab readers’ attention and make the headline more catchy. Additionally, headlines frequently employ exaggeration, hyperbole, and sensationalism to appeal to readers’ emotions and generate clicks. However, the study also finds that headlines can vary significantly across different genres and publications. For example, tabloid newspapers tend to prioritize sensationalism and entertainment value, while more serious publications tend to employ more understated and informative headlines. The relevance of the study is determined as well by the significant expansion of the influence of the media on society, as well as the growing interest in the methods by which this influence is strengthened. Overall, the paper sheds light on the complex and multifaceted phenomenon of headlines implemented in English discourse. By understanding the linguistic and rhetorical strategies employed in headlines, readers can better assess the accuracy and credibility of the suggested information and gain a more nuanced understanding of current events.

Résumé :
We investigate the assimilation of immigrant youth in Ecuador. Focusing on formal schooling and employing administrative data from high schools, we document subtle ways by which assessment biases against students with an immigrant background play a significant role in this assimilation process. We find that, after holding constant performance on blindly scored proficiency tests, teacher-assigned grades in Mathematics and Spanish are consistently lower for students from immigrant families. We show that these results are robust with respect to the omission of socio-emotional and behavioral traits that are likely valued by teachers. These differentials are larger for male students and those attending urban schools. While these grading differentials have direct impact over high school graduation rates, they may also discourage future human capital investments, potentially leading to lower college attendance, distorted choice of major, and sub-optimal labor market outcomes, which are all well know elements for the economic assimilation of immigrants.

In the article, advertising communication is explored in the context of socio-political, socio-economic, and cultural-legal processes in Eastern Galicia (1919–1939); The ideological and educational concept of advertising materials is outlined, and the features of shaping Ukrainian civic-state consciousness, national and universal moral-spiritual values, interethnic mutual respect, and tolerance under the influence of press advertising are characterized. In the four chapters of the monograph, a comprehensive study of the essence of Ukrainian press advertising communication in Eastern Galicia is conducted for the first time in the field of journalism science. Iryna Nironovych introduced documents and unpublished materials from eight Ukrainian and Polish archival funds into scientific circulation that are directly related to the development of advertising in Western Ukrainian press. The monograph characterizes the national dominant of press advertising discourse in the conditions of Ukrainian nation’s statelessness. After analyzing advertising in 23 newspapers and magazines, the author of the monograph revealed the specific features of creating information-rich, morally ethical advertising content based on Ukrainian ethnonational principles within the territory of the Polish state. The author also justified the necessity of advertising communication as a means of promoting social solidarity and shaping high moral and spiritual values, as well as humanistic worldview and national beliefs among advertisers and consumers. The monograph characterizes not only the content of information about products and services (verbal and non-verbal parameters) but also the mental traits that, in the conditions of the Polish state, contributed to the promotion of Ukrainian moral and spiritual values. Advertising serves a complex of functions that are essential for meeting the economic, social, cultural, and moral-spiritual needs of the human community. In the conditions of the Second Polish Republic, the situation of Ukrainians motivated advertisers to seek a special socio-psychological, educational, regulatory, and ideological approach to creating advertising. The article emphasizes that advertising announcements with elements of national-patriotic coloring encompassed two components – informational and ideological. Advertising for Ukrainian books on historical topics, magazines, and public organizations carried an enlightening and educational, as well as an emotionally informative character. Press advertising communication in the fields of industrial and agricultural production, trade, household services, and cultural and artistic life served as an emotionally rational factor in strengthening the information-psychological structure of the Ukrainian national community.
