Abstract Because of Ayn Rand's problematic moral labels on her characters, Gail Wynand, not Howard Roark, should be her true Nietzschean hero. Wynand meets the criteria of both the Nietzschean Superman and Rand's Objectivism. Roark's false integrity taints his greatness and improperly vulgarizes him as a Nietzschean Superman. Rand problematically wants her heroes to accept the greatness of the Übermensch, but reject his natural existence and will to power. Dominique Francon should be her true Nietzschean villain, because, unlike Ellsworth Toohey, she enjoys the painful destruction of herself and others.

Résumé :
Chronic communal conflicts often embody prisoner's dilemmas. Both communities prefer peace to war. Yet neither trusts the other, viewing the other's gain as its loss, so potentially shared interests often go unrealized. Achieving positive-sum outcomes from apparently zero-sum struggles requires a particular kind of risk-embracing leadership. To succeed leaders must (a) see power relations as potentially positive-sum, (b) strengthen negotiating adversaries when tempted to weaken them, and (c) demonstrate hope for a positive future and take great personal risks to achieve it. Such leadership is exemplified by Nelson Mandela and F. W. de Klerk in the South African democratic transition. To illuminate the strategic dilemmas Mandela and de Klerk faced, we examine the work of Robert Axelrod, Thomas Schelling, and Josep Colomer, who highlight important dimensions of the problem but underplay the role of risk-embracing leadership. Finally we discuss leadership successes and failures in the Northern Ireland settlement and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Ponic, Pamela Lynn. « Embracing complexity in community-based health promotion : inclusion, power, and women's health ». Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31458.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Inclusion is increasingly being positioned by health promoters as a way of alleviating exclusion and related health inequities experienced by marginalized women (Shookner, 2002; Reid, 2004). Yet assumptions about inclusion are rarely investigated, especially from the perspectives of the individuals it is meant to benefit. The purpose of this research was to critically examine inclusion as a health promotion strategy from the standpoints of 14 diverse women who were involved in a 5-year community-based health promotion (CBHP) project called Women Organizing Activities for Women (WOAW). This qualitative feminist participatory action research (FPAR) project developed from my 4-year stint as research manager of WOAW, which was designed to improve poor women's health through a community development approach to recreation (Frisby, Reid & Ponic, 2007). Participants reflected on their varied experiences through interviews, writing, and collaborative analysis. Through my critical feminist lens, the findings reveal that inclusion was a multifaceted and dynamic process produced by the interplay between individual, psychosocial, relational, local/organizational, and socio-political factors. Inclusion and exclusion existed in a fluid relationship that was shaped by contradictory and internalized understandings of power across axes of difference including gender, class, race/ethnicity, age, and (dis)ability. These tensions resulted in significant conflict through issues of leadership, sub-group loyalties, fear, and resistance. Amidst the inclusion-exclusion fluidity, participants' physical and mental health was both enhanced and hindered through psychosocial pathways. Their capacity, confidence, and sense of identity improved through participation, community connections, and consciousness-raising. Although the conflicts produced stress and anxiety, participants continually made health promoting choices to alleviate the effects. These findings do not measure health outcomes or inclusion processes; rather, they illustrate how coupling FPAR with critical theorizing can inform CBHP (Kesby, 2005; Poland, 1998). Exploring CBHP projects across this length of time and at this depth is rare, but doing so importantly explicates inclusion, participation, exclusion, and marginalization as contestable concepts that must be critically examined if they are to be useful. In the end, I offer an 'Inclusion Tool' designed to cultivate critical dialogues amongst CBHP participants, practitioners, and researchers who seek to embrace and utilize the complexity inherent within inclusion processes.

Edstrom, Jonathon. « Embracing Visual Experience and Data Knowledge : Efficient Embedded Memory Design for Big Videos and Deep Learning ». Diss., North Dakota State University, 2019. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/31558.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Energy efficient memory designs are becoming increasingly important, especially for applications related to mobile video technology and machine learning. The growing popularity of smart phones, tablets and other mobile devices has created an exponential demand for video applications in today’s society. When mobile devices display video, the embedded video memory within the device consumes a large amount of the total system power. This issue has created the need to introduce power-quality tradeoff techniques for enabling good quality video output, while simultaneously enabling power consumption reduction. Similarly, power efficiency issues have arisen within the area of machine learning, especially with applications requiring large and fast computation, such as neural networks. Using the accumulated data knowledge from various machine learning applications, there is now the potential to create more intelligent memory with the capability for optimized trade-off between energy efficiency, area overhead, and classification accuracy on the learning systems. In this dissertation, a review of recently completed works involving video and machine learning memories will be covered. Based on the collected results from a variety of different methods, including: subjective trials, discovered data-mining patterns, software simulations, and hardware power and performance tests, the presented memories provide novel ways to significantly enhance power efficiency for future memory devices. An overview of related works, especially the relevant state-of-the-art research, will be referenced for comparison in order to produce memory design methodologies that exhibit optimal quality, low implementation overhead, and maximum power efficiency.

Cortés, Calderón Sofía Valeria. « Embracing complexity : Dynamics governing urban drinking water supply security in Mexico City ». Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Stockholm Resilience Centre, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-188976.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Drinking water supply insecurity is globally on the rise, and prevalent in most low and middle-income urban areas. Multiple responses have emerged to cope with the lack of a reliable and equitable supply of safe and sufficient drinking water in cities, which presents a wide range of social-ecological implications. Yet, many of the analyses to date are focused on predominantly technological, ecological, and economic perspectives, overlooking broader cultural and political dimensions. What are the elements and the interrelationship between them that sustain the lack of drinking water supply security at an urban scale? The empirical case study is located in Mexico City, the capital city of one of the most drinking water-insecure countries globally and among the world’s five largest metropolitan areas. Qualitative data is elicited from a literature review and semi-structured interviews with key experts and urban stakeholders. The results provide an integrated understanding of the proposed system structure that created and maintain the water supply problem in the long-term. Hindrances include knowledge lock-ins and critical dynamics that inhibit the political support to transition towards a drinking water security scenario. This study shows that drinking water supply crisis in the study area and other cities with similar conditions need to be understood as multi-dimensional and from a system perspective, by challenging underlying assumptions and embracing interconnectedness. Key feedback mechanisms are presented in causal loop diagrams, allowing the exploration of higher-order leverage points to reduce existing path-dependencies as one increasingly important research area, and potentially relevant for decision-makers.

Harvey, Lyndze Caroline. « Letting Go : A Departure from Liberal Moral Education, Embracing Teacher Transformation, & ; Evolving Pedagogies of Resistance ». Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/6679.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Contemporary, mainstream moral education in North America teaches students to be compliant rather than skilled in moral consciousness. The Myths of Moral Education, illustrated as ‘Necessity,’ ‘Neutrality,’ ‘Liberal Subjectivity,’ ‘The Good,’ and ‘Dissent,’ maintain a system of control. Through a Foucaudian lens, I address, within common teaching practices, the presence of productive power and oppression, possibilities for subversive action, and propose an abandonment of liberal moral education. Counter-arguments are explored in a discussion on the control/chaos dichotomy and a dismantling of dissent as a tool of a liberal paradigm. Using a pedagogical framework influenced by bell hooks and Paulo Freire, I argue that what must occur, before taking on pedagogical change, is a teacher transformation through a Praxis of ‘Letting Go’. Finally, I present an alternative to education’s preoccupation with compliance through Pedagogies of Resistance; a three-part approach that assesses power, promotes compassion, and creates space for empowerment.

Résumé :
AbstractSince the concept of the teacher seems to be, that she or he is the one who owns knowledge—in contrast to students who don’t—it is understandable that teachers have doubts creating a situation out of those usual boundaries. In this chapter, it is argued that if we want to teach adequately for the post digital age, we have to embrace doubt. Doubt is a force that falls out of the usual teleological approach of teaching, because we don’t exactly know the outcome. This theoretical approach translates into practice—or better: is in itself a practical approach—because since one does not know which outcome an educational situation will have, he/she has improvise, embrace doubt, and deny classical power structures.

AbstractThis chapter presents Bourdieu’s theoretical toolkit, which allows to look at the early childhood education and care (ECEC) settings’ collaboration with families through concepts embracing both objective/societal conditions and individual characteristics. These concepts are illusio, doxa, habitus, and capital. The empirical example presented in the chapter shows how the power of the parents’ economic, cultural, and social capital can negotiate and tailor the modes of involvement into parental needs and illusios. The analytical potential of Bourdieu’s theory is also discussed in relation to the established pre-school and social pedagogy traditions, which imply different practices of parental involvement.

Résumé :
AbstractAcquiring transformative literacies calls for a critical review of our underlying conceptual assumptions, in order to bring new light to old words, such as human, equality, freedom and power. Indeed, the transition towards sustainability requires leaving behind the modern paradigm, and embracing a conceptual framework proposed by Hannah Arendt, notably in the Human Condition. With her reconceptualisation of humanness, focused on relationality instead of rationality, she creates the conditions for cherishing and honouring interdependence, from each other, from artefacts and from nature. With this renewed understanding of what it means to be human and how it entails to rely on nature, Arendt offers a new framework that dissolves misleading beliefs and activates alternative ways to look and engage with reality in a meaningful way. And so she does, by keeping fear and rage away, but instead mobilising trust and …love of the world, as difficult it may be.

Résumé :
AbstractThe development of Nordic gender geography is closely related to societal transformation. The way the gendered labour market is structured and re-structured is a recurrent theme for investigation. In this chapter, we discuss Nordic gender geography since its establishment in the 1980s, with the aim of scrutinising long-term and contemporary trends and challenges. We discern an engagement in issues based on socio-spatial conditions, where agency, identity and intersectional perspectives work together with materiality, institutions and structures. Nordic gender geography thereby contributes with a contextual gender theory, emphasising space as both a designer and an interpreter of gender relations. Regional and local gender relations become a player in the structure-agency relationship, and we argue that socio-spatial gender theorising can modify the idea of universal and all-embracing theoretical explanation of how gender is constructed. Nordic gender geography constitutes a prevailing and growing potential for a significant contribution to gender theory and to socio-spatial analysis of power.

Résumé :
Environmental and supply considerations are playing a pivotal key in the economics and operation rationale behind power generation. A once fossil-fuel dependent industry is embracing renewable sources, albeit slowed by technical and economic challenges. With gas turbines comprising a large part of the world’s electric generation pool, increasing the power output of the existing combined cycle plants and avoiding the use of less efficient peakers has the potential of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Performance simulations show that compressed air injection can increase the power output of 2×1 combined cycle “F” class plants above 40 MW, equivalent to the typical output of simple cycle peaking units. Resultant total power output can be maintained while reducing pollutants, infrastructure resources, and capital cost compared to peaking plants.

Résumé :
The DoD accounts for over 1% of the country’s total electricity consumption. However, DoD bases heavily rely on vulnerable commercial power grids, susceptible to disruptions from outdated infrastructure, weather-related incidents, and direct attacks. To enhance energy efficiency and resilience, it is imperative to address energy demand in buildings, especially heating and cooling. This study focuses on phase change materials (PCMs) incorporated into concrete to enhance thermal control and reduce energy consumption. Though PCMs have shown promise in heat transfer and energy storage applications, their integration into concrete faces challenges. Concerns include potential reduction in compressive strength, impacts on workability and setting time, effects on density and porosity, durability, and higher cost than traditional concrete. This report examines current obstacles hindering the use of PCMs in concrete and proposes opportunities for extensive research and application. By selecting appropriate PCMs and additives, comparable strength to control samples can be achieved. Moreover, specific techniques for incorporating PCMs into concrete demonstrate greater effectiveness. Embracing PCMs in concrete can significantly contribute to energy-efficient and resilient DoD installations.

Résumé :
It is most unlikely that adjusting to a 1.5 to 2 degree hotter world is possible within the prevailing political and economic norms of our times. In our post-capitalist times we need to modify modern technological market “liberalism” (which has become, actually, techno-feudalism). If we do not modify our present norms, the collapse of the natural means of power and privilege native to our present world order makes it almost inevitable that democratic liberalism will devolve further into a distinctly anti-liberal species of techno-tyranny. To avoid such a dystopian future, this paper explores how we might re-imagine our global politico-economic norms without embracing techno-tyranny. The argument put forward is that modern liberalism makes the means of personal wealth accumulation and private freedom, the end of public life. This confusion of means with ends implies, ironically, that if our means become unviable, we have no way of aiming at valuable human ends by different means. We have a culturally assumed faulty teleology in political economics and in our philosophy of technology. A revised form of Aristotle’s teleology is proposed whereby an understanding of common human flourishing defines human ends, and where a range of new means could then be pursued to achieve that end, respecting the natural limitations on means that are now upon us.
