Résumé :
Electronic structure calculations in the framework of density functional theory are based on complex numerical codes which are used in a multitude of applications. Frequently, existing experimental information is used as a gauge for the reliability of such codes. However, their results depend both on the chosen exchange-correlation energy functional and on the specific numerical implementation of the Kohn-Sham equations. The only way to disentangle these two items is a direct comparison of two or more electronic structure codes. Here, we address the achievable numerical accuracy and numerical precision in the total energy computation of the two all-electron density-functional codes Wien2k and FPLO. Both codes are based on almost independent numerical implementations and largely differ in the representation of the Bloch wave function. Thus, it is a highly encouraging result that the total energy data obtained with both codes agree within less than 10−6. We here relate the term numerical accuracy to the value of the total energy E, while the term numerical precision is related to the numerical noise of E as observed in total energy derivatives. We find that Wien2k achieves a slightly higher accuracy than FPLO at the price of a larger numerical effort. Further, we demonstrate that the FPLO code shows somewhat higher precision, i.e., less numerical noise in E than Wien2k, which is useful for the evaluation of physical properties based on derivatives of E.

Résumé :
Abstract Electronic structure calculations have been instrumental in providing many important insights into a range of physical and chemical properties of various molecular and solid-state systems. Their importance to various fields, including materials science, chemical sciences, computational chemistry, and device physics, is underscored by the large fraction of available public supercomputing resources devoted to these calculations. As we enter the exascale era, exciting new opportunities to increase simulation numbers, sizes, and accuracies present themselves. In order to realize these promises, the community of electronic structure software developers will however first have to tackle a number of challenges pertaining to the efficient use of new architectures that will rely heavily on massive parallelism and hardware accelerators. This roadmap provides a broad overview of the state-of-the-art in electronic structure calculations and of the various new directions being pursued by the community. It covers 14 electronic structure codes, presenting their current status, their development priorities over the next five years, and their plans towards tackling the challenges and leveraging the opportunities presented by the advent of exascale computing.

Résumé :
In the last few years, several works have investigated the performance of cooperative wireless systems with various types of channel codes such as Low Density Parity Check (LDPC), Turbo, CRC, convolutional and recently Reed Solomon (RS) codes. These cooperative schemes give power to single antenna mobiles to originate virtual multiple antennas transmitter, MIMO system, by sharing their antennas so that diversity gain is achieved. The most common cooperative schemes are decode and forward (DF) and coded cooperation (CC). Concatenated Reed Solomon and convolutional codes have been used by several wireless communication standards like digital video broadcasting (DVB) standards and IEEE 802.16e WiMAX standard. In this paper, we develop two different coded cooperation schemes and apply them to the mandatory structure of physical layer specifications of IEEE 802.16e WiMAX. The results attained for both coded cooperation schemes present magnificent diversity gains over non-cooperative scheme.

Lavoie, Philippe. « A NURBS based 3D object reconstruction using colour-coded structured light ». Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/29132.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This thesis introduces a new robust and high precision methodology and corresponding techniques for reconstructing three-dimensional (3-D) views of real objects from one single two-dimensional (2-D) image. The reconstruction process relies on obtaining the two dimensional image of a real object from a camera, on which a colour coded structured light is projected. The method does not require any a-priori knowledge of the absolute positioning or orientation of the camera and the projector which illuminates the scene with the colour coded structured light. Prior to the 3-D reconstruction steps, a calibration process is used to provide a high precision calculation of both the camera's and the projector's intrinsic and extrinsic parameters. These parameters are essential to the 3-D object reconstruction technique as introduced in this thesis. The structured light is used to determine unique patterns on the object's surface. The lines provide a series of control points which once extracted from the object's 2-D view, are used in the creation of Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) curves in 2-D. Those NURBS curves are then projected into space to eventually re-create a 3-D surface. The technique's precision depends on the structured light sampling rate adaptation on the object surface. In a recent test, a 7 tau (thousands of an inch) precision was achieved with a relatively smooth object. The thesis will focus on the 3-D reconstruction of an object based on its single 2-D view. The approach proposed is end-to-end since it handles all the steps necessary to go from a 2-D view of an object to its modelization using NURBS curves and eventually to a surface in 3-D which can be manipulated with 3-D editing software on a computer monitor. The thesis's results are applicable to many domains. One of those domains is the CAD/SLA systems for manufacturing applications. Furthermore, NURBS surfaces can compress the 3-D image of a real object in a very efficient manner.

Rodrigues, Jacqueline Nadine. « The automatic implementation of a dynamic load balancing strategy within structured mesh codes generated using a parallelisation tool ». Thesis, University of Greenwich, 2003. http://gala.gre.ac.uk/6282/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This research demonstrates that the automatic implementation of a dynamic load balancing (DLB) strategy within a parallel SPMD (single program multiple data) structured mesh application code is possible. It details how DLB can be effectively employed to reduce the level of load imbalance in a parallel system without expert knowledge of the application. Furnishing CAPTools (the Computer Aided Parallelisation Tools) with the additional functionality of DLB, a DLB parallel version of the serial Fortran 77 application code can be generated quickly and easily with the press of a few buttons, allowing the user to obtain results on various platforms rather than concentrate on implementing a DLB strategy within their code. Results show that the devised DLB strategy has successfully decreased idle time by locally increasing/decreasing processor workloads as and when required to suit the parallel application, utilising the available resources efficiently. Several possible DLB strategies are examined with the understanding that it needs to be generic if it is to be automatically implemented within CAPTools and applied to a wide range of application codes. This research investigates the issues surrounding load imbalance, distinguishing between processor and physical imbalance in terms of the load redistribution of a parallel application executed on a homogeneous or heterogeneous system. Issues such as where to redistribute the workload, how often to redistribute, calculating and implementing the new distribution (deciding what data arrays to redistribute in the latter case), are all covered in detail, with many of these issues common to the automatic implementation of DLB for unstructured mesh application codes. The devised DLB Staggered Limit Strategy discussed in this thesis offers flexibility as well as ease of implementation whilst minimising changes to the user's code. The generic utilities developed for this research are discussed along with their manual implementation upon which the automation algorithms are based, where these utilities are interchangeable with alternative methods if desired. This thesis aims to encourage the use of the DLB Staggered Limit Strategy since its benefits are evidently significant and are now easily achievable with its automatic implementation using CAPTools.

Résumé :
Since their rediscovery in 1995, low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes have received wide-spread attention as practical capacity-approaching code candidates. It has been shown that the class of codes can perform arbitrarily close to the channel capacity, and LDPC codes are also used or suggested for a number of important current and future communication standards. However, the problem of implementing an energy-efficient decoder has not yet been solved. Whereas the decoding algorithm is computationally simple, with uncomplicated arithmetic operations and low accuracy requirements, the random structure and irregularity of a theoretically well-defined code does not easily allow efficient VLSI implementations. Thus the LDPC decoding algorithm can be said to be communication-bound rather than computation-bound. In this thesis, a modification to the sum-product decoding algorithm called earlydecision decoding is suggested. The modification is based on the idea that the values of the bits in a block can be decided individually during decoding. As the sumproduct decoding algorithm is a soft-decision decoder, a reliability can be defined for each bit. When the reliability of a bit is above a certain threshold, the bit can be removed from the rest of the decoding process, and thus the internal communication associated with the bit can be removed in subsequent iterations. However, with the early decision modification, an increased error probability is associated. Thus, bounds on the achievable performance as well as methods to detect graph inconsistencies resulting from erroneous decisions are presented. Also, a hybrid decoder achieving a negligible performance penalty compared to the sum-product decoder is presented. With the hybrid decoder, the internal communication is reduced with up to 40% for a rate-1/2 code with a length of 1152 bits, whereas increasing the rate allows significantly higher gains. The algorithms have been implemented in a Xilinx Virtex 5 FPGA, and the resulting slice utilization and energy dissipation have been estimated. However, due to increased logic overhead of the early decision decoder, the slice utilization increases from 14.5% to 21.0%, whereas the logic energy dissipation reduction from 499 pJ to 291 pJ per iteration and bit is offset by the clock distribution power, increased from 141 pJ to 191 pJ per iteration and bit. Still, the early decision decoder shows a net 16% estimated decrease of energy dissipation.

Thakadu, Batlhowahela C. D. « Lattice-structure based adaptive MMSE detectors for DS-CDMA systems ». Thesis, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/10413/5274.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
There has been significant interest in the research community on detectors for DS-CDMA systems. The conventional detector, which detects users ' data bits, by using a filter matched to the users' spreading codes, has two major drawbacks. These drawbacks are (1) its capacity is limited by multiple access interference (MAl) and (2) it suffers from the near-far problem. The remedy to these problems is to use a multiuser detector, which exploits knowledge of users ' transmission and channel parameters to mitigate MAl. Such detectors are called multi user detectors (MUD). A number of these detectors have been proposed in the literature. The first such detector is the optimal detector proposed by Verdu. Following Verdu's work a number of suboptimal detector were proposed. These detectors offer better computational complexity at the expense of the bit error rate performance. Examples of these detectors are the decorrelating detector, the minimum mean squared error detector (MMSE), the successive interference cancellation and parallel interference cancellation. In this thesis, we consider the adaptive DS-CDMA MMSE detector, where lattice-based filter algorithms are employed to suppress MAl. Most of the work in the literature has considered the implementation of this detector using the Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm. The disadvantage of using the LMS algorithm to implement the MMSE detector is that the LMS algorithm converges very slowly. The main aims of this thesis are as follows. A review of the literature on MUD is presented. A lattice based MUD is then proposed and its performance evaluated using both simulation and analytical methods. The results obtained are compared with those of the LMSMMSE detector. From the results obtained the adaptive Lattice-MMSE detector is shown to offer good performance tradeoff between convergence results and BER results.

Résumé :
A classic text in the field providing a readable and accessible guide for students of electrical and electronic engineering. Fundamentals of electric properties of materials are illustrated and put into context with contemporary applications in engineering. Mathematical content is kept to a minimum allowing the reader to focus on the subject. The starting point is the behaviour of the electron, which is explored both in the classical and in the quantum-mechanical context. Then comes the study of bonds, the free electron model, band structure, and the theory of semiconductors, followed by a chapter on semiconductor devices. Further chapters are concerned with the fundamentals of dielectrics, magnetic materials, lasers, optoelectronics, and superconductivity. The last chapter is on metamaterials, which has been a quite popular subject in the past decade. The book includes problems, the worked solutions are available in a separate publication: Solutions manual for electrical properties of materials. There is an appendix giving a list of Nobel Prize winners whose work was crucial for describing the electric properties of materials, and there are further appendices giving descriptions of phenomena which did not fit easily within the main text. In particular there is a quite detailed appendix that summarizes the properties of memory elements. The book is ideal for undergraduates, and is also an invaluable reference for graduate students and others wishing to explore this rapidly changing field.

Résumé :
Computational methods that can be employed to investigate fundamental questions concerning the complex chemical and structural behavior of biological molecules such as proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids have been traditionally limited by the large number of atoms that comprise even the simplest system of biochemical interest. As a consequence, highly parameterized, empirical force field methods have been developed that describe the energy of macromolecular structures as a function of the spatial locations of the atomic nuclei. In combination with algorithms for simulating molecular dynamics, these classical models allow relatively accurate calculations of the structural and thermodynamic properties associated with proteins and nucleic acids. On the other hand, empirical approaches cannot be used to model molecular behavior that is directly dependent on electrons and their energies. For example, no information can be obtained concerning the electronic spectra of macromolecule/ligand complexes, electron transfer reactions such as those that occur within the photosynthetic reaction center, nitrogenase, an enzyme involved in nitrogen fixation, or cytochrome c oxidase which catalyzes the reduction of oxygen in the last step of aerobic respiration. Accurate modeling of transition states, excited states, and intermediates in biological catalysis requires application of quantummechanical (QM) representations since all of these phenomena depend on the distribution and/or excitation of electrons. At present, the most accurate ab initio algorithms for calculating electronic structure cannot be applied to systems comprised of hundreds of atoms, as such calculations scale as N4–N7 on most workstations, where N is the number of functions used in constructing the many-electron, molecular wavefunction. Even with the implementation of ab initio codes optimized for use on parallel computing engines, and density functional approaches, it is likely that high-accuracy QM calculations in the near future will remain limited to systems that comprise tens, rather than hundreds, of nonhydrogen atoms. Semi-empirical quantum-mechanical methods combine fundamental theoretical treatments of electronic behavior with parameters obtained from experiment to obtain approximate wavefunctions for molecules composed of hundreds of atoms.

Résumé :
<em>Abstract</em>.-Tagging fish with electronic tags can provide information on movement, migration, behavior, and stock structure while diadromous species are at sea. The state of the art technology for tracking fishes in the marine environment includes two families of tags. Archival tags store data and either relay them to satellites or require recapture for interrogation. Low return rates for diadromous species make these tags very expensive to use. A second type, acoustic tags, sends signals to passive receivers. Information is collected from the fish only when it is within range of a receiver. Technology is now being developed to mesh these tags into a fully integrated tag that will permit archived data to be transmitted acoustically over multiple frequencies to receivers allowing data retrieval without recapturing the animal. The new technology includes a "business card" tag that is a miniaturized receiver coupled with a coded pulse transmitter. These tags will exchange and record individual-specific codes when two animals carrying them come within acoustic range of each other, which will allow data from many animals to be moved ashore through few animals. These devices would be ideal for quantifying the degree of school fidelity (or, conversely, mixing) or the degree of at sea interaction of fishes from different river systems and provide ecological information to enhance management in an ecosystem approach to fisheries.

Résumé :
For symmetric (hermitian) (dense or banded) matrices the computation of eigenvalues and eigenvectors Ax = λBx is an important task, e.g. in electronic structure calculations. If a larger number of eigenvectors are needed, often direct solvers are applied. On parallel architectures the ELPA implementation has proven to be very efficient, also compared to other parallel solvers like EigenExa or MAGMA. The main improvement that allows better parallel efficiency in ELPA is the two-step transformation of dense to band to tridiagonal form. This was the achievement of the ELPA project. The continuation of this project has been targeting at additional improvements like allowing monitoring and autotuning of the ELPA code, optimizing the code for different architectures, developing curtailed algorithms for banded A and B, and applying the improved code to solve typical examples in electronic structure calculations. In this paper we will present the outcome of this project.

Résumé :
<p>Reinforced concrete flat slab-column structures are widely used because of their practicality. However, this type of structures can be subjected to punching-shear failure with in the slab-column connections. Without shear reinforcement, the slab-column connection can undergo brittle punching failure, especially when the structure is subjected to lateral loading in seismic zones. This research is a part of an extensive investigation about the punching shear behavior of interior RC slab-column connections under seismic loading. The current paper represents only the results of the first two tested specimens. The main objective is to discuss the nature and mechanism of effect seismic loading on punching shear behaviour. Finally, the experimental results are analyzed and compared to international codes such as American Code ACI318-14[1] and Euro Code EC2-2004[2]. In light of these results, some preliminary conclusions are presented.</p><p>papers will be distributed in the electronic conference proceedings.</p>

Résumé :
This paper presents a damage mechanics-based methodology for the progressive damage and virtual qualification of advanced electronic packages such as BGAs, DCAs, CSPs, and Flip-chips. The key technique is to implement the material nonlinearity into commercially available software tools. A unified viscoplastic constitutive framework with the damage evolution and failure criteria has been successfully implemented into the ABAQUS® code to model time-rate-temperature dependent material properties. The framework has been successfully applied to solder alloys, polymer films, and underfill encapsulants. The mathematical structure and numerical algorithm development of the unified constitutive framework as well as the key implementation techniques for commercial FEA codes have been summarized in this paper. Both crack initiation and propagation of a solder joint with damage evolution under mechanical cyclic loading have been demonstrated. Virtual simulations of TSOP component failure under mechanical cyclic loading and BGA package under thermal cyclic loading have also been presented.

Résumé :
A reconfigurable gear machining numerical control system (NC/CNC) architecture is proposed in this paper. The CNC platform can be quickly applied to gear hobbing, shaping, milling and grinding machine, through simple reconfiguring or parameter setting. Parametric automatic programming technology, high speed and high precision electronic gearbox, process database technology are studied. Based on the analysis of the gear machining process, the mathematic model on automatic programming of gear machining is established. Based on the Windows CE operating system, the CNC gear machining automatic programming system is developed on the ARM+DSP hardware platform, including the design of human-machine interface, automatic programming algorithm and other modules. With the support of the automatic programming and process database modules, NC codes can be generated automatically just by inputting gear parameters, tool parameters and process parameters, then, the interpolation data structure can be generated by interpreter module. A new kind of software electronic gearbox (EGB) and its implementation methods are also researched in the embedded CNC. Data flow among the modules is analyzed. Finally, experiments are conducted, and the tracking error and contour error are analyzed. The results show that the proposed gear machining CNC architecture is effective.

Résumé :
System-in-package (SiP) technologies typically demand an increasing number of passive components assembled into a single package to achieve system level electrical performance. Traditionally, these passive components and their assembly technologies are designed for printed circuit boards and are now integrated at the package level. However, problems may arise when solder joints are used as interconnects between the passive components and the substrate in SiP system. The solder joint may melt during the surface mounting process. Since the size of the solder joint is comparable to that of the passive components, the melting may significantly alter the stress field in the package. Consequent failure may occur if the interconnect structure is not properly designed. It is a challenge to simulate solder melting with commercial finite element codes. In this paper, the interaction between the melting solder and the surrounding structures is investigated. The stress superposition method is used in the finite element model, in which the melting solder is removed from the package and a void with identical geometry was analyzed in its place. The overall stress field is the superposition of the stress field due to temperature change and the stress field caused by the uniform pressure acting on the void surface. This method greatly simplifies the mechanical modeling.
