Résumé :
It is known that the heterogeneity of hydraulic conductivity drives the groundwater flow and the transport of contaminants. However, in conventional characterization methods, the lack of densely sampled hydrological data does not permit us to describe the aquifer heterogeneity at an appropriate scale. In this study, we integrate ground-penetrating radar (GPR) tomographic data with hydraulic conductivity logs to estimate the hydraulic conductivity of a heterogeneous unconsolidated aquifer at a decimetric scale between two boreholes. The integration of these different data sets is achieved using a nonlinear Bayesian simulation algorithm. The prior hydraulic conductivity distribution is estimated, under Gaussian hypothesis, by simple kriging of the hydraulic well data. The likelihood of hydraulic conductivity given the relative permittivity and the electrical conductivity functions is obtained from a kernel probability density function estimator that describes the in-situ relationship between the electric and the hydraulic properties measured along boreholes. The proposed method is tested on a synthetic heterogeneous model of permeability to validate the methodology. We show that permeability realizations obtained from the proposed algorithm present a higher correlation with the synthetic model than other classical simulation methods. The method is then applied on data acquired over an unconsolidated aquifer located in Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon, Quebec, Canada. The data set consists of measurements from (i) GPR crosshole acquisition, (ii) cone penetration testing with pressure measurement combined with soil moisture resistivity, and (iii) a borehole electromagnetic flowmeter. By using the presented Bayesian approach, we generated multiple hydraulic conductivity realizations that are in good agreement with the hydrogeological model of the area.

Résumé :
Abstract. This study presents a stochastic, three-dimensional characterization of a heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity field within DOE's Hanford 300 Area site, Washington, by assimilating large-scale, constant-rate injection test data with small-scale, three-dimensional electromagnetic borehole flowmeter (EBF) measurement data. We first inverted the injection test data to estimate the transmissivity field, using zeroth-order temporal moments of pressure buildup curves. We applied a newly developed Bayesian geostatistical inversion framework, the method of anchored distributions (MAD), to obtain a joint posterior distribution of geostatistical parameters and local log-transmissivities at multiple locations. The unique aspects of MAD that make it suitable for this purpose are its ability to integrate multi-scale, multi-type data within a Bayesian framework and to compute a nonparametric posterior distribution. After we combined the distribution of transmissivities with depth-discrete relative-conductivity profile from the EBF data, we inferred the three-dimensional geostatistical parameters of the log-conductivity field, using the Bayesian model-based geostatistics. Such consistent use of the Bayesian approach throughout the procedure enabled us to systematically incorporate data uncertainty into the final posterior distribution. The method was tested in a synthetic study and validated using the actual data that was not part of the estimation. Results showed broader and skewed posterior distributions of geostatistical parameters except for the mean, which suggests the importance of inferring the entire distribution to quantify the parameter uncertainty.

Résumé :
The research subject of this PhD thesis consists in the development and application of techniques for analyzing well‐log, well‐test, and tracer data to infer the distribution of hydrologic properties in heterogeneous geologic settings, including fractured rock and complex aquifer systems. This thesis is organized in an introductory section presenting the state of the art about heterogeneous geologic media characterization and a focus on flowmeter log analysis. The second chapter regards applications of an integrated surveying approach where an hydrogeophysical characterization was used for a complex aquifer in calcareous and gypsiferous formation. The most important topic is the joint use of the Electromagnetic Borehole Flowmeter (EBF) in single hole mode and the Ground Penetrating Radar in single and cross borehole configuration. The third chapter is a completion of the studies performed and described in chapter two, with an extensive study involving a conventional hydrogeological characterization (pumping test, core analysis) with flowmeter log in cross hole mode and its application to design and interpretation two tracer tests. The aim is to provide an approach to optimize a set of hydrogeological and geophysical survey techniques. In chapter four another application of the flowmeter log is presented. This application has been designed to monitor infiltration in the vadose zone of a sandy‐gravelly soil and use results as calibration data for the geophysical investigation (ERT and Georadar Borehole survey). This thesis involved coordination of laboratory and field work; collaboration with geophysicists, geochemists and geologists in interdisciplinary studies. Main applications of this work include advanced hydrogeological characterization, groundwater and vadose‐zone contaminant remediation as well as optimal utilization of water resources.
