Résumé :
The flexoelectric effect has a significant influence on the electro-mechanical coupling of micro-nano devices. This paper studies the mechanical and electrical properties of functionally graded flexo-piezoelectric beams under different electrical boundary conditions. The generalized variational principle and Euler–Bernoulli beam theory are employed to deduce the governing equations and corresponding electro-mechanical boundary conditions of the beam model. The deflection and induced electric potential are given as analytical expressions for the functionally graded cantilever beam. The numerical results show that the flexoelectric effect, piezoelectric effect, and gradient distribution have considerable influences on the electro-mechanical performance of the functionally graded beams. Moreover, the nonuniform piezoelectricity and polarization direction will play a leading role in the induced electric potential at a large scale. The flexoelectric effect will dominate the induced electric potential as the beam thickness decreases. This work provides helpful guidance to resolve the application of flexoelectric and piezoelectric effects in functionally graded materials, especially on micro-nano devices.

Résumé :
We have made an observation of 45 MeV electron beam bunches using the nondestructive electro-optical (EO) technique. The amplitude of the EO modulation was found to increase linearly with electron beam charge and decrease inversely with the optical beam path distance from the electron beam. The risetime of the signal was bandwidth limited by our detection system to ~ 70 ps. An EO signal due to ionization caused by the electrons traversing the EO crystal was also observed. The EO technique may be ideal for the measurement of bunch structure with femtosecond resolution of relativistic charged particle beam bunches.

Résumé :
Adaptive structures involving large imposed deformation often go beyond the boundary of linear theory and they should be treated as “nonlinear” structures. A generic nonlinear finite element formulation for vibration sensing and control analysis of laminated electro/elastic nonlinear shell structures is derived based on the virtual work principle. A generic curved triangular piezoelectric shell element is proposed based on the layerwise constant shear angle theory. The dynamic system equations, equations of electric potential output and feedback control force defined in a matrix form are derived. The modified Newton-Raphson method is adopted for nonlinear dynamic analysis of large and complex piezoelectric/elastic/control structures. A finite element code for vibration sensing and control analysis of nonlinear active piezoelectric structronic systems is developed. The developed piezoelectric shell element and finite element code are validated and then applied to control analysis of flexible electro-elastic (piezoelectric/elastic) structural systems. Vibration control of constant-curvature electro/elastic beam and plate systems are studied. Time-history responses of free and controlled nonlinear electro/elastic beam and plate systems are presented and nonlinear effects discussed.

Résumé :
Vibration and buckling analysis of a magneto-electro-elastic sandwich Timoshenko beam with a porous core and poly-vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) matrix reinforced by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is considered as face layers and material properties of CNTs and PVDF are assumed to be temperature-dependent. Different CNT distribution patterns including uniform distribution, AV (which top and bottom face sheets have functionally graded-A (FG-A) and functionally graded-V (FG-V) CNT distribution patterns, respectively) and VA patterns are employed. The governing equations of motion are derived based on Timoshenko beam theory, and Navier's solution is used to solve these equations. The sandwich beam resting on a Pasternak foundation and face layers are subjected to electric and magnetic potentials. The effect of different parameters such as porosity coefficient, electric and magnetic potential, parameters of foundation, and geometrical parameters are investigated on vibration and buckling behavior of the sandwich beam. Numerical results of this paper show that porosity distribution has a significant effect on the stiffness of the sandwich beam. The results can be used for future analysis of magneto-electro-mechanical sandwich systems as actuators and sensors.

Experimental analysis has been done for vibration and noise found in Walking-beam conveyer. Two possible solutions design have been proposed, which integrate with physical components on the speed control system. Because of the determine frequency of the valve, the only way to reducing the opening rate of the valve is using complex signal, which is not what I expect. My research is finding out how to use a simple signal to do complex speed control on Walking-beam conveyer. Through anglicizing the simulation of above design, select the appropriate system for speed control of the Walking-beam conveyer, which provides a theoretical basis and engineering practice for the electro-hydraulic proportional speed control and equipment in the application of non-ferrous metallurgy equipment.

Résumé :
In this paper, a microstructure-dependent magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded porous (MEEFGP) beam model is proposed using a variational approach. To account for the microstructure effect, the extended modified couple stress theory is incorporated in the new model. In addition, the porosity variation of the two-phase beam model through the thickness direction is also considered. The new developed model is verified in terms of its correctness with a FEM model. Based on the equations of motion and boundary conditions derived by Hamilton’s principle, the static bending and wave propagation behaviors of the new model are analytically determined. The results prove the existence of the microstructure effect and the magneto-electro-elastic multi-field coupling effect. There are significant differences between the new model and the classical model at the microscale. Moreover, the porosity also has an important influence on the mechanical properties of the new model. The results predicted by the new model can provide the theoretical basis for the design of microscale acoustic wave devices and micro-electro-mechanical systems.

Résumé :
Electro-spark deposition (ESD) and laser beam machining (LBM) are the technologies using the concentrated energy flux. This paper deals with the issue of the impact of laser modification on the morphology and mechanical properties of carbide/copper coatings produced by electro-spark treatment. The coatings were applied to C45 carbon steel samples using the EIL-8A device. The following three types of electrodes made using the powder metallurgy (PM) hot pressing technique, from copper and tungsten carbide powders of different percentage compositions, were used for the coatings: 25% WC and 75% Cu; 50% WC and 50% Cu; and 75% WC and 25% Cu. Laser modification of the surface layers was performed with an Nd:YAG laser. The research focused on the analysis of the morphology of coatings applied by electro-spark technology before and after laser processing. The analysis of the morphology of electro-spark coatings revealed that the coatings had microcracks and pores. The laser beam machining of ESD coatings led to the homogenization of chemical composition, fragmentation of the structure, and elimination of microcracks. In addition, measurements of porosity, microhardness, adhesion, and analysis of XRD phase composition of the electro-spark coatings were performed. Laser processing proved to have a positive effect on improving the adhesion of coatings and reducing their porosity. This paper also presents a simulation model of heat transfer processes for the case of laser radiation impact on a WC-Cu coating. The developed numerical model, describing the influence of laser treatment on the distribution of temperature fields in the heated material (at a given depth) is of significant importance in the development of treatment technologies. Laser-modified ESD coatings perform anti-wear and protective functions, which enable their potential application in means of transport such as rolling stock.

This article investigates vibration behavior of magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded nanobeams embedded in two-parameter elastic foundation using a third-order parabolic shear deformation beam theory. Material properties of magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded nanobeam are supposed to be variable throughout the thickness based on power-law model. Based on Eringen’s nonlocal elasticity theory which captures the small size effects and using Hamilton’s principle, the nonlocal governing equations of motions are derived and then solved analytically. Then, the influences of elastic foundation, magnetic potential, external electric voltage, nonlocal parameter, power-law index, and slenderness ratio on the frequencies of the embedded magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded nanobeams are studied.

Résumé :
Abstract Using bus waveguides coupled to the graphene-loaded Si-ring resonators (GSRRs) all on a Si-on-insulator substrate, we propose a compact bidirectional switchable beam splitter/filter controlled by graphene-based electro-absorptive (refractive) mode modulation. The design is suitable for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM), according to International Telecommunication Union (ITU) standard. The proposed device consists of a through waveguide coupled to two drop waveguides via two GSRRs. Each GSRR consists of a stack of hBN/graphene/hBN nanolayers sandwiched between two Si-ring resonators. Using a finite difference time domain method, we have tuned the resonant wavelengths of GSRRs in the range of 1551.5 < λ < 1552.1 nm, linearly with the slope of ∼ 2.46 nm eV−1 via appropriately changing the graphene chemical potential, electrostatically. The numerical results show that when both GSRRs are in an electro-refractive state and a transverse electric (TE) polarized light beam of an appropriate wavelength is launched into one of the though-ports, ∼ 84.5% of the input intensity equally splits between the adjacent drop-ports. The transmission out of the second through-port is less than 0.8%. The numerical results further show that when one GSRR is in an electro-refractive mode, and the other one is in an electro-absorptive state, ∼ 68.4% of the input intensity transmits out of the drop-port adjacent to the former GSRR, and the other ports experience insignificant outputs (<0.7%). The device’s structural symmetry makes it a bidirectional tunable, suitable for long-haul optical telecommunication applications. Finally, we investigated the fabrication tolerances in the designed parameters.

Résumé :
This study is devoted to examining the vibration behaviors of magneto-electro-elastic nanobeams with consideration of nanomaterial uncertainties induced by the atom defect and manufacturing deviation. Based on the nonlocal Timoshenko beam theory, the governing equations of a magneto-electro-elastic nanobeam resting on a Winkler–Pasternak foundation and subjected to electric and magnetic potentials are derived. The material properties of the magneto-electro-elastic nanobeam are treated as uncertain parameters with well-defined bounds to overcome the extensive information required in probabilistic evaluation. The range of natural frequency of the magneto-electro-elastic nanobeam is predicted via a non-probabilistic evaluation methodology, which is validated by comparing with Monte Carlo simulation and probabilistic evaluation methodology. Then, the parametric analyses are performed to reveal the coupling effects of nanomaterial uncertainties, and nonlocal parameter, as well as elastic foundation parameters on the vibration performance of magneto-electro-elastic nanobeams. It is demonstrated that the nanomaterial uncertainties affect the mechanical behaviors of magneto-electro-elastic nanostructures significantly and the present model can be degenerated into the deterministic model as the nanomaterial uncertainty is eliminated.

Résumé :
AbstractThe paper is concerned with determining the influence of the laser treatment process on the properties of electro-spark coatings. The properties of the coatings after laser treatment were assessed based on following methods: microstructure and X-ray diffraction analysis, adhesion tests, roughness measurement, hardness tests, tribological properties and application tests. The tests were carried out on WC-Co coating (the anode) obtained by electro-spark deposition over carbon steel C45 (the cathode) and molten with a laser beam. The coatings were deposited by means of the EIL-8A and they were laser treated with the Nd:YAG. The tests show that the laser-treated electro-spark deposited WC-Co coatings are characterized by lower hardness, higher seizure resistance, roughness and adhesion. The laser treatment process causes the homogenization of the chemical composition, the structure refinement and the healing of microcracks and pores of the electro-spark deposited coatings. Laser treated electro-spark deposited coatings are likely to be applied in sliding friction pairs and as protective coatings.

Résumé :
In this paper, we propose a photo response model of the optical piezo-electro actuator, which reacts by light beam. Based on response experiments by U.V. beam, the response in this model is constituted with three effects: 1) photostrictive effect; 2) pyroelectro effect; 3) thermal deformation. Those effects are different in response magnitude and response time each other; influenced by the characteristics of the light beam. In consequence, it is possible that a photo response is controlled by changing characteristics of light beam. As a whole, results of the simulations of this model agree with those of the experiments.

Résumé :
This study presents the analytical solution and experimental investigation of the galloping energy harvesting from oscillating elastic cantilever beam with a rigid mass. A piezoelectric wafer was attached to galloping cantilever beam to harvest vibrational energy in electric charge form. Based on Euler-Bernoulli beam assumption and piezoelectric constitutive equation, kinetic energy and potential energy of system were obtained for the proposed structure. Virtual work by generated charge and galloping force applied onto the rigid mass was obtained based on Kirchhoff's law and quasistatic assumption. Nonlinear governing electro-mechanical equations were then obtained using Hamilton's principle. As the system vibrates by self-exciting force, the fundamental mode is the only one excited by galloping. Hence, multi-degreeof-freedom equation of motion is simplified to one-degree-of-freedom model. In this study, closed-form solutions for electro-mechanical equations were obtained by using multi-scale method. Using these solutions, we can predict galloping amplitude, voltage amplitude and harvested power level. Numerical and experimental results are presented and discrepancies between experimental and numerical results are fully discussed.

Résumé :
Electron beam induced electromigration of ON+and H+impurities in unintentionally n-doped GaN was investigated using cathodoluminescence (CL) kinetics profiling, CL imaging of regions pre-irradiated with a stationary electron beam, and wavelength dispersive x-ray spectrometry (WDS). The presented results (i) illustrate induced impurity diffusion in wide bandgap semiconductors, (ii) provide experimental evidence for the (VGa−ON)2−model of yellow luminescence in GaN with low Si content1, (iii) confirm the roles of O in frequently reported bound exciton and donor-acceptor pair emissions and (iv) suggest the involvement of ON+and hydrogenated gallium vacancies in a blue emission in autodoped GaN.
