The dissipative properties of electromechanical systems based on structure with elements made of piezomaterial can be controlled by attaching external electric circuits to the piezoelements. One can change electric circuit parameters in such a way as to ensure the greatest possible energy dissipation on an external electric circuit and, thereby, the best damping of the system’s specified oscillation frequency. Since the external electric circuits are a collection of elements with lumped parameters attached to a system with distributed parameters, the solution for such a system of electro-viscoelasticity problems in the complete formulation by the finite element method leads to a large solving system of algebraic equations. The solution of this system requires considerable time and computational resources. There are known approaches in mechanics that make it possible to represent mechanical systems with distributed parameters in the form of discrete systems with lumped parameters, such as a spring–mass–damper. In this article, it is proposed to model electromechanical systems with external electric circuits based on their electrical analogue in the form of equivalent electric substitution circuits, which are discrete electrical systems with lumped parameters. These discrete systems are analogues of the initial electromechanical systems in terms of frequency characteristics and the electrical processes that take place in them. The equivalent substitution circuit is based on the Van Dyke model and allows one to obtain the required number of complex eigenfrequencies of the electromechanical system under consideration.

Résumé :
Quantum search algorithm, which can search an unsorted database quadratically faster than any known classical algorithms, has become one of the most impressive showcases of quantum computation. It has been implemented using various quantum schemes. Here, we demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that such a fast search algorithm can also be realized using classical electric circuits. The classical circuit networks to perform such a fast search have been designed. It has been shown that the evolution of electric signals in the circuit networks is analogies of quantum particles randomly walking on graphs described by quantum theory. The searching efficiencies in our designed classical circuits are the same to the quantum schemes. Because classical circuit networks possess good scalability and stability, the present scheme is expected to avoid some problems faced by the quantum schemes. Thus, our findings are advantageous for information processing in the era of big data.

The low-frequency behavior of acoustical transducers can be simulated with the so-called electroacoustical analogies (or lumped parameters). The main idea is that visual inspection of the transducer allows the derivation of an electroacoustic circuit that can be analyzed. The technique is computationally efficient and provides significant physical insight into the transducer. Electroacoustical analogies are taught today in many courses around the world. However, it is difficult to find reading material with an algorithmic approach to derive the electroacoustic circuit from the visual inspection of the transducer. This paper presents algorithms to derive the mechanical and acoustical circuits of transducer systems and how to couple the electrical, mechanical, and acoustical circuits for electrodynamic and capacitive transducers. A number of examples of the derivation are presented in detail. These techniques were conceived from an extensive search of the classical literature in acoustics and adapted to the teaching needs of undergraduate and graduate students of the Acoustical Engineering at the Federal University of Santa Maria in Brazil.

Modeling the non-electrical processes by equivalent electrical circuits is a widely known and successfully used technique in research and development. Although finite element methods software development has supplanted electrical analogy techniques due to greater accuracy and intuitiveness in recent decades, the modeling of physical processes based on analogies has several advantages in some cases. Representation of physical processes in the form of lumped circuits and graphs allows researchers to estimate the system with an alternative view, use standardized methods for solving electrical circuits for non-electrical systems, and, most importantly, allows us to use electrical circuit simulators with their unique capabilities. Of particular interest for using the analogy technique are systems that include electronic components along with components belonging to other physical domains, such as mechanical, thermal, magnetic, and others. A solid-state magnetoelectric (ME) sensor equipped with a charge amplifier is proposed in this study as an example of analysis using the equivalent electrical circuit and simulating these circuits using SPICE-based circuit simulators. Sensor analysis is conducted with an emphasis on noise budgeting and optimizing the sensor’s signal-to-noise ratio and resolution. In addition, the steady state, the phasor, and transient types of analyses were employed to study the static and dynamic behavior of the system. Validation of the model using analytical calculations and comparison with experimental data demonstrated superior results.

Electronic circuits form the basis of much of the technology we use today. Professor Haruo Kobayashi and Assistant Professor Anna Kuwana, Division of Electronics and Informatics, Gunma University, Japan, are utilising classical mathematics, including theorems such as number theory and control theory in their design of circuits that contain elements of analogue signalling. Analogue circuit planning is regarded as an art as these circuits are typically designed based on mature designers' intuition and experiences in a process that is less systematic for coming up with new architectures and more designing than digital circuit design and Kobayashi and Kuwana firmly believe that 'beautiful' mathematics can facilitate truly great circuit design. Additional mathematics techniques employed by Kobayashi and the team are statistics, coding theory, modulation and signal processing algorithms and pairing pure mathematics theorems with electrical engineering is a key feature of the researchers' work. The team utilises theoretical analysis and simulations such as the circuit simulator (SPICE) and system simulator (MATLAB) to test its work and collaborates with semiconductor companies and electronic measurement instrument companies in Japan for smart circuit design and effective circuit testing. So far, results include that using SAR ADC configurations with Fibonacci sequence weights can improve the speeds and reliability of the SAR ADC. Also several new DAC architecutures and waveform sampling methods are derived based on mathematics.

An analog behavioral model of high power gate turn-off thyristor (GTO) is developed in this paper. The fundamental methodology for the modeling of this power electronic circuit is based on the use of the realistic diode consideration of non-linear junctions. This modeling technique enables to perform different simulations taking into account the turn-on and turn-off transient behaviors in real-time. The equivalent circuits were simulated with analog software developed in our laboratory. It was shown that the tested simple and compact model allows the generation of accurate physical characteristics of power thyristors under dynamic conditions. The model understudy was validated with analog simulations based on operational amplifier devices.

Biological membranes mediate different physiological processes necessary for life, many of which depend on ion movement. In turn, the difference between the electrical potentials around a biological membrane, called transmembrane potential, or membrane potential for short, is one of the key biophysical variables affecting ion movement. Most of the existing equations that describe the change in membrane potential are based on analogies with resistive-capacitive electrical circuits. These equivalent circuit models assume resistance and capacitance as measures of the permeable and the impermeable properties of the membrane, respectively. These models have increased our understanding of bioelectricity, and were particularly useful at times when the basic structure, biochemistry, and biophysics of biological membrane systems were not well known. However, the parts in the ohmic circuits from which equations are derived, are not quite like the biological elements present in the spaces around and within biological membranes. Using current, basic knowledge about the structure, biophysics, and biochemical properties of biological membrane systems, it is shown here that it is possible to derive a simple equation for the transmembrane potential. Of note, the resulting equation is not based on electrical circuit analogies. Nevertheless, the classical model for the membrane potential based on an equivalent RC-circuit is recovered as a particular case, thus providing a mathematical justification for the classical models. Examples are presented showing the effects of the voltage dependence of charge aggregation around the membrane, on the timing and shape of neuronal action potentials.

In this thesis the ANTICS analogue fault simulation software is described which provides a statistical approach to fault simulation for accurate analogue IC test evaluation. The traditional figure of fault coverage is replaced by the average probability of fault detection. This is later refined by considering the probability of fault occurrence to generate a more realistic, weighted test metric. Two techniques to reduce the fault simulation time are described, both of which show large reductions in simulation time with little loss of accuracy. The final section of the thesis presents an accurate comparison of three test techniques and an evaluation of dynamic supply current monitoring. An increase in fault detection for dynamic supply current monitoring is obtained by removing the DC component of the supply current prior to measurement.

Continuing improvements in integrated circuit technology have made possible the implementation of complex electronic systems on a single chip. This often requires both analogue and digital signal processing. It is essential to simulate such IC's during the design process to detect errors at an early stage. Unfortunately, the simulators that are currently available are not well-suited to large mixed-signal circuits. This thesis describes the design and development of a new methodology for simulating analogue and digital components in a single, integrated environment. The methodology represents components as behavioural models that are more efficient than the circuit models used in conventional simulators. The signals that flow between models are all represented as piecewise-linear (PWL) waveforms. Since models representing digital and analogue components use the same format to represent their signals, they can be directly connected together. An object-oriented approach was used to create a class hierarchy to implement the component models. This supports rapid development of new models since all models are derived from a common base class and inherit the methods and attributes defined in their parentc lassesT. he signal objectsa re implementedw ith a similar class hierarchy. The development and validation of models representing various digital, analogue and mixed-signal components are described. Comparisons are made between the accuracy and performance of the proposed methodology and several commercial simulators. The development of a Windows-based demonstrations imulation tool called POISE is also described. This permitted models to be tested independently and multiple models to be connected together to form structural models of complex circuits.

The growing interest in programmable analog circuits has led to the development of Field Programmable Analog Arrays (FPAAs). An FPAA consists of: 1) a programmable cell that can be reconfigured to perform several analog functions. 2) an architecture that interconnects a number of copies of the programmable cell. In this thesis, the full monolithic circuit implementation of the analog part of the programmable cell is presented. Chapter I gives an introduction to the idea of FPAA and introduces the FPAA architecture and the cell block diagram. Chapter II deals with the design and verification of a differential current-mode four-quadrant multiplier. The weighting-summing circuit with the normalizing stage is discussed in Chapter III. Chapter IV presents the design of a current-mode low-voltage programmable integratorgain circuit. Programmability was achieved by changing the bias current in the designed circuits; no analog switches were used in the signal path. This shows no effect on the performance of the circuits. The presented programming method, however, relies on the availability of a programmable current source with a storage capability. The design of this current source is discussed in chapter V. Conclusions are summarized in Chapter VI. The presented designs throughout the whole thesis were supported by detailed analytical derivations with the necessary SPICE simulations to verify the performance.

This thesis deals with the reliability analysis of a fuel pump driver circuit (FPDC), which regulates the amount of fuel pumped to a turbojet engine. Reliability analysis in such critical circuits has great importance since unexpected failures may cause serious financial loss and even human death. In this study, two types of reliability analysis are used: &ldquo
Worst Case Circuit Tolerance Analysis&rdquo
(WCCTA) and &ldquo
Failure Modes and Effects Analysis&rdquo
(FMEA). WCCTA involves the analysis of the circuit operation under varying parameters in their tolerance bands. These parameters include the resistances of the resistors, operating temperature and voltage input value. The operation of FPDC is checked and the most critical parameters are determined in the worst case conditions. While performing WCCTA, a method that guarantees the exact worst case conditions is used rather than probabilistic methods like Monte Carlo analysis. The results showed that the parameter variations do not affect the circuit operation unfavorably
operating temperature, voltage input variation and tolerance bands for the resistances are fairly compatible with the circuit operation. FMEA is implemented according to the short circuit and open circuit failures of all the electronic components used in FPDC. The components whose failure has catastrophic effect on the circuit operation have been determined and some preventive actions have been offered for some catastrophic failures.

Abstract Modeling distributed parameter systems (DPS) by electronic circuits and fabricating the complicated equivalent circuits to evaluate the system characteristics always poses many challenging research issues for years. Modeling and analysis of distributed sensing/control of smart structures and distributed structronic systems are even scarce. This paper is to present a technique to model distributed structronic systems with electronic circuits and to evaluate control behaviors with the fabricated equivalent circuits. Electrical analogies and analysis of distributed structronic systems is proposed and dynamics and control of beam/sensor/actuator systems are investigated. To determine the equivalent circuits and system parameters, higher order partial derivatives are simplified using the finite difference method; partial differential equations (PDE) are transformed to finite difference equations and further represented by electronic components and circuits. To provide better signal management and stability, active electronic circuit systems are designed and fabricated. Electric signals from the distributed system circuits (i.e., soft and hard) are compared with results obtained by classical theoretical and other (e.g., the finite element, and experimental) techniques.

Abstract Stimuli-sensitive or responsive (smart) hydrogels, or chemofluidic transistors, are the base of the key control elements of smart chemomechanical valves. These valves have an outstanding potential for miniaturized, integrated sensor and actuator systems in many application areas and especially for lab-on-chip technology. Due to the multifaceted design parameters the design and realization of hydrogel-based systems are exceptionally complex and demanding. In this work we compare two types of stimuli-sensitive hydrogel-based valves with two types of electronic transistors and analyze analogies. As a result, the membrane isolated chemical volume phase transition Transistors (MIS-CVPT’s) exhibit a behavior with various analogies to electrical Field Effect Transistors (FET’s). The FET device embodies a voltage-controlled channel resistor, which is related to the chemically controlled fluidic channel of the MIS-CVPT. Chemical volume phase transition transistors (CVPT’s) on the other hand show in part similarities both to the bipolar transistor (BJT) and the MOSFET. The analogies allow a closed description of a microfluidic system by equivalent circuits and an efficient behavioral simulation by sophisticated circuit simulators. Several chemofluidic circuits, as a microfluidic oscillator, a NAND gate and an Analog/Digital Converter (ADC) and their behavioral simulation will be presented. The applied lab-on-a-chip (LoC) predictive simulation-based design concept is very helpful as it saves many practical experiments and leads to optimized components.

This paper discusses the use of ultrasound to convey data from one side of a metallic wall to the other side. A communication channel is established by attaching a set of three ultrasonic transducers to the wall. The first transducer injects a continuous ultrasonic wave into the wall. The second transducer is mounted on the inside and operates as a receiver and signal modulator. The third transducer is installed on the same side as the first transducer and receives the signal that is reflected from the inside transducer. A sensor on the inside provides analog data that is then digitized. The digitized bits are used to vary the electrical load applied to the electrical terminals of the inside transducer, changing its acoustic impedance in accordance with the data bits. The impedance changes, in turn, modulate the amplitude of the reflected ultrasonic signal. This modulated signal is detected at the outside receiving transducer, where it is then demodulated to recover the data. Additionally, some of the acoustic power received at the inside transducer is harvested to produce the electrical power needed to operate the communication and sensor system on the inside. The entire system (ultrasonic, solid wall, and electronic) is modeled in the electrical domain through electro-mechanical analogies. This approach enables the simultaneous examination of the ultrasonic and electronic components. The electric circuit simulation package PSpice is used to simulate the communication system, which assisted in the analysis and optimization of the communication channel. Both simulation and experimental results are presented and discussed.

Battery management system (BMS) takes a key role in battery health management and life extension of electric vehicles. It contains various analogue-digital hybrid circuits above the frequency range of several hundred mega-Hertz, where the signal integrity and system stability are probably affected by certain issues of circuit design. In this report, the signal reflections along the transmission lines in a BMS are theoretically simulated and analyzed. The performance of the system is compared to that after optimization both in theory and measurement. The simulation and experimental results verify that electrical impedance matching is most crucial to the signal integrity and system stability in the system design.

Abstract Degradation of electronic equipment is typically accompanied by a deviation in their electrical parameters from their design values. When the function of the electronic equipment fails, parametric faults of the electrical parameters will ultimately occur. Such electrical parameters can characterize the state of health can be defined as health parameters. For complex electronic equipment such as hardware circuits of Nuclear power plant DCS cards, the use of health parameters for fault diagnostic has been widely used, but there is no mature method for sub-health diagnostic. To address this problem, an electronic equipment health assessment method was developed using a technology based on the combination of mechanism knowledge and data-driven. The method first uses Physics of Failure approach and hardware circuit logic principle to identify the major failure mechanisms of the circuit, and then determines the key health parameters and their sub-health thresholds on this basis. The time series data under specific test conditions for the key health parameters of the circuits to be assessed is collected and compared with the sub-health thresholds, then the health status assessment results based on mechanism knowledge can be obtained. As well, the data-driven health assessment technology based on Mahalanobis distance is applied to analyze the real-time health parameter data of all samples, and the healthy outlier samples are identified and quantified, and the health status assessment results based on the data-driven technology can be obtained. The results of the two are comprehensively evaluated to finally determine the circuit health status. Practice was carried out on the DCDC chip of a nuclear power DCS analog output module, and the results showed that this method was feasible for engineering.

Abstract Circuit level probing is testing, measuring, or characterizing the operation of an electronic circuit. It reveals the true operation of a circuit, and takes the next step beyond electrical engineering design and circuit simulation. This paper presents the return of circuit level probing in nanoelectronics by means of SEM based nanoprobing. It provides information on the process of characterizing resistance matching, diode matching, Op Amp offset matching, and mirrored current. Circuit level probing, using a SEM based nanoprober, identified the problem to be poor matching between the current mirror devices in the circuit. A family of curves device characterization was obtained from the circuit level probing. Discrete devices testing showed good correlation back to the circuit level data. The device mismatch was determined to be associated with the "as processed" built-in potential of the devices, with no abnormal influence from either the gate or drain electrical fields.

This paper describes an analog actuation circuit for a novel frequency-modulated MEMS gyroscope. The circuit provides an amplitude-modulated (AM) signal as the input into a RLC resonant drive circuit, which drives the gyroscope. The actuation system is composed an automatic gain control (AGC) loop, a low pass filter, an amplitude modulation component and a resonant drive circuit. The AM signal is composed of a modulating signal that excite a natural frequency of gyroscope drive mode and a carrier signal with a frequency corresponding to the electrical resonant frequency of the RLC circuit. Both feedforward and feedback AGC configurations are used to stabilize the envelope of the signal. However, the breadboard implementations of the feedforward and feedback circuits in their current configurations have similar signal to noise ratio to that of the function generator. To improve the actuation circuit performance, we plan to include the resonant drive circuit within the AGC feedback loop and implement the actuation circuit on PCB.

Abstract Analog components are still an important aspect of our society's electronic portfolio. They play a role in the emerging and expanding 5G electronic industry, for instance. NPN bipolar junction transistors (BJTs) are the foundation of many analog circuits and have continually evolved to meet more demanding specifications. Certain embodiments of these NPNs, however, pose difficulties in failure analysis. Vertical NPN BJTs, with nanometer thick junctions extending several microns in length, are one such example. Although the high aspect ratio dimensions of these devices provide desired performance improvements, a subtle nanometer-scale defect anywhere along their length can cause electrical shifts detrimental to analog circuits. This paper examines the nature of these defects and explains how to isolate them using common failure analysis tools and special techniques.

Continuing enhancements in Microsystem Technologies facilitate the development of inertial sensors — accelerometers and gyroscopes — of unprecedented performance to cost ratio and broaden the frontiers of their application. Of particular interest, because of their immunity to ambient disturbances, are sensors equipped with high resolution Electro-Mechanical ΣΔ converters and with a high speed, digital serial signal transmission. The digital circuitry of these sensors reaches the accuracy of 0.02 parts-per-million (ppm). However, the analogue transducers of measured physical quantities into electrical signals inside of the even best inertial sensors are prone to inherent imperfections of analog systems such as nonlinearity, cross-sensitivity, or noise. The best accuracy of these transducers is about two orders of magnitude worse than that of the electrical circuitry. The overall accuracy can be greatly improved by using corrective filters that cancel the effects of imperfections in the analogue transducers. The effectiveness of these filters hinges upon the accuracy of identifying comprehensive models of the analogue transducers. Ambient disturbances, in particular mechanical vibrations, greatly deteriorate the accuracy of identification. Their impact can be attenuated to some extent by using vibration isolation platforms. The effectiveness of attenuation is usually good at the frequencies above 5–10 Hz, however it is poor at low frequencies. This poor attenuation is a significant disadvantage since the low frequency phenomena in inertial sensors have pronounced impact on their suitability for a broad class of applications (e.g., navigation). The presented research focuses on the design of a passive vibration isolation device in which horizontal movement is coupled to tilt in a way that a component of the gravity perceived by the tested inertial sensor effectively cancels out the horizontal acceleration coming from the ambient vibrations.

Integrated microfluidic networks are being rapidly deployed in academia and industry for a vast spectrum of applications, ranging from molecular biology to quantum physics. Current design paradigm for microfluidic layouts is typically based on numerical modeling, which is not suitable for rapid prototyping nor parameter driven design. Here, we utilize the hydraulic-electric circuit analogy to propose a circuit analysis methodology and an open-source framework for a parameter-guided design of integrated microfluidic layouts. We provide a method with which a user can intuitively define the circuit’s constraints and an algorithm which optimizes the hydraulic layout according to physical constraints. Our algorithm supports valves-integrated design and provides a simulation framework that describes fluid flow with different valves configuration.
