Résumé :
Spatially resolved emission and absorption intensities from the indium 303.94-nm resonance line were measured in a furnace atomization plasma excitation spectrometry (FAPES) source. These measurements show that the spatial structure observed in the analyte emission is due to two effects. The first is the spatial distribution of analyte atoms in the source. The absorption measurements show that this spatial distribution is fairly uniform. There is a slight gradient, with analyte concentrations increasing from the cuvette wall to the center electrode. The fine structure in the emission intensity profiles must therefore be caused by the dependence of the degree of analyte excitation on position within the cuvette. This structure suggests that the FAPES source operates as an atmospheric-pressure radio-frequency glow discharge. Negative glows are seen adjacent to the graphite cuvette wall and center electrode.

Résumé :
The results of a previous study, part 1, showed that use of a shield can improve the thermal performance of a glow plug, and thereby reduce ignition time. However, the part 1 study also found that use of a simple shield with only one circular opening can delay flame propagation out of the shield. The conclusions of that study suggested that there is scope for further improvements of the shield design, especially the shield opening geometry. Accordingly, this article presents the results of computational studies investigating the influence of multi-opening shield designs on natural gas ignition characteristics in glow plug–assisted compression–ignition engines. Two types of multi-opening glow plug shield, consisting of four small circular openings distributed in either diamond-pattern or square-pattern arrangements, were employed. The simulated results demonstrated that both multi-opening shields can not only increase glow plug surface temperature, but also increase the residence time of fuel mixture adjacent to the glow plug surface in the early injection stage, resulting in a faster ignition than the single-opening shield. Furthermore, the diamond-pattern multi-opening glow plug shield provides a faster or comparable flame propagation path back to combustion chamber, compared to single-opening glow plug shield, while the square-pattern multi-opening glow plug shield delays the flame propagation under several specific engine conditions. Compared to the single-opening glow plug shield, the overall natural gas ignition delays are further reduced by 6%–44% when using the diamond-pattern multi-opening glow plug shield, while the square-pattern multi-opening glow plug shield is only able to reduce the natural gas ignition delay under a few specific conditions.

Résumé :
The purpose of this study is to examine how anti-consumption lifestyles affect the brand attitude through the benefits (utilitarian environmental and warm glow) of green advertising. It has been confirmed that the message types used in the advertising can influence the evaluation of brand attitudes, depending on whether the focus is on promotion or prevention. Respondents were gathered from 265 South Korean consumers. The survey data were regressed and the research hypothesis was verified using the Process Model. As a result, the anti-consumption lifestyle positively affects the brand attitude of green advertising through warm glow (βindirect = .073) and utilitarian environmental benefit (βindirect = .217). These results revealed that the anti-consumption lifestyle can influence brand attitude through warm glow and utilitarian environmental benefit. In particular, when the moderating effect of message types is verified, the warm glow can have a more positive effect on brand attitudes through a promotion-focused message (β = .1559, p = .05), and the utilitarian environmental benefit can have a more positive effect on brand attitudes through a prevention-focused message (β = –.226, p = .024). In conclusion, this study can provide insight into the lifestyle of target customers of eco-friendly advertisements and message types used in advertisements. Résumé :
AbstractFrom the Apollo era of exploration, it was discovered that sunlight was scattered at the terminators giving rise to “horizon glow” and “streamers” above the lunar surface. Subsequent investigations have shown that the sunlight was most likely scattered by electrostatically charged dust grains originating from the surface. A renaissance is being observed currently in investigations of the Moon. The Luna-Glob and Luna-Resource missions (the latter jointly with India) are being prepared in Russia. Some of these missions will include investigations of lunar dust. Here we discuss the future experimental investigations of lunar dust within the missions of Luna-Glob and Luna-Resource. We consider the dusty plasma system over the lunar surface and determine the maximum height of dust rise. We describe mechanisms of formation of the dusty plasma system over the Moon and its main properties, determine distributions of electrons and dust over the lunar surface, and show a possibility of rising dust particles over the surface of the illuminated part of the Moon in the entire range of lunar latitudes. Finally, we discuss the effect of condensation of micrometeoriod substance during the expansion of the impact plume and show that this effect is important from the viewpoint of explanation of dust particle rise to high altitudes in addition to the dusty plasma effects.

Abstract The application of radio frequency glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy for the investigation of the stability of different diffusion barriers for microelectronic applications against thermal diffusion of Cu is presented. Difficulties in the interpretation of the glow discharge results are overcome by performing an additional special experiment, where conductive and nonconductive parts are sputtered intentionally at the same time. As a consequence of the investigations, care must be taken, if glow discharge spectrometry is applied to samples with conductive and nonconductive components.

Although the literature shows that consuming pro-social products increases warm glow, a psychological factor that contributes to consumer experience and satisfaction, it is unclear whether participating in a charity sporting event results in the same outcome. This research addresses this gap by testing the effects of participating in charity running events and altruism on the warm glow of participants. A scenario-based survey was employed to collect data from 180 respondents who had previously participated in charity running events. Multiple regression analysis results showed that participating in a charity (vs. non-charity) running event increased participants’ warm glow. Altruism also had a significant positive impact on their warm glow; however, this effect was independent of the percentage of proceeds donated by the event to charity.

Résumé :
The role of water vapor as an impurity in glow discharge mass spectrometry is examined by means of pulsed injection of water into an argon discharge. The effect of water vapor on both analyte and intrinsic gas species is determined. Water dissociates in the discharge to produce reactants that can influence analytical results. The extent of this effect is dependent on the reactivity of the cathode sample with water and its dissociation products. Metal oxides are observed during and shortly after the pulsed water injection. Three different cathode materials (titanium, iron, and copper) are studied, with a range of metal oxide bond strengths. Titanium, which has strong gettering action in the glow discharge plasma, exhibits the shortest perturbation time after addition of water vapor. The experiments show the need to remove trace water from glow discharges for best analytical results.

Résumé :
In this study, differences in glow curves of Mn doped LTB powder samples synthesized with solid and wet synthesis methods and doped by using solid and wet doping techniques were investigated. Firstly, LTB was synthesized by using wet synthesis method which mainly comprises dissolution of reactants in water as solvent. Second way to produce LTB which was used in this study was solid synthesis method. In solid synthesis method, reactants were mixed in powder form. In the second part of the study, LTB produced by two different methods were doped with Mn and additionally Ag, Mg or P by using two different doping techniques. In order to see structural differences between differently synthesized and differently doped LTB samples which contained different amount of dopant powder X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) method was employed. Besides, FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) spectroscopy analyses were performed in order to detect differences in the bond structure caused by doping. Additionally, Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) was used to determine the actual amount of dopant in LTB. Also morphological structures of samples were compared by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Thermoluminescence measurements were performed with (TLD) Thermoluminescence Dosimeter equipment. XRD and FTIR analysis showed that syntheses of products were done in well success. Addition of dopants did not cause any changes in structural or bonding properties of LTB. It was possible to observe that, synthesis and doping methods and dopant concentration effect the thermoluminescence glow curves of doped LTB.

Résumé :
This article describes the compositional depth profiling (CDP) of diamond-like carbon (DLC) layers by Glow Discharge-Optical Emission Spectrometry (GD-OES). The DLC layers were deposited on flat steel samples. Analysis by using a Charge Coupled Device (CCD) GD-OES instrument revealed saturation effects of the carbon lines at 156 nm and 165 nm. Therefore, the application of these lines for CDP of DLC layers is not possible. A third line at 193 nm was not affected by this saturation effect and is therefore a good choice for calibration. A second effect was observed as a non-flat crater in combination with large differences of the sputtering rate factor of the substrate (1.1) and the DLC (0.032) led to an unusual behaviour at the interface between the DLC layer and substrate. Both measurements of the crater shape and of the sputtered coating weight up to the interface and just behind it showed clearly that about 30% of the DLC layer remains at the crater edge, once the crater centre reaches the interface. This was found to be the main reason for the incorrect DLC-layer thickness, if the intersection between the carbon and iron concentration was used as a measure for the end of the DLC layer.

Résumé :
The effects of added oxygen gas on analytical glow discharges (GD) - , significant changes in electrical characteristics, and emission line intensities of both analyte and carrier gas (usually Ar) - have been shown experimentally and predicted by computer models. However, past experimental studies were either limited to one or two spectral lines for each element, or used oxygen concentrations far higher than those likely in analytical work. These changes can seriously affect both the stability of the glow discharge and the analytical results. Contamination by oxygen traces can be curtailed by using high purity carrier gas, modern vacuum techniques and a “clean” instrument. However, the complexity of discharge processes is far greater when oxygen traces are present in the sample either as constituent such as Fe2O3, Ti2O3 and Al2O3 or within an alloy. Investigations were carried out in three separate locations - at Imperial College London (IC), The Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science & Technology EMPA, Thun, Switzerland and The Leibniz-Institut für Festkörper- und Werkstoffforschung IFW, Dresden, Germany. Optical spectra generated in pure argon, Ar/O2 and Ar/H2 plasmas have been recorded using the IC high resolution vacuum UV Fourier transform spectrometer allowing for the first time a detailed study of the effects of added oxygen on observed intensities of emission lines from a large number of energy levels; these spectra have been compared, again for the first time, with spectra from a calamine sample (hot rolled alloy steel with oxide layer) in a pure argon plasma. A Specturma GDA650 instrument was used to record time-resolved spectrochemical information during the analysis of calamine. Glow discharge time of flight mass spectrometry (GD-TOFMS) experiments were carried out at EMPA with iron, titanium, copper, gold and iron oxide samples. Changes in emission intensities and ion signals of both analyte and carrier gas with addition of O2 are reported and discussed and compared to the cases of H2 & N2 additions.

Résumé :

The world’s largest particle accelerator, Large Hadron Collider, located at CERN outside Geneva performed its first proton-proton collisions in November 2009. One of the four main experiments is LHCb, studying rare decays of hadrons containing the beauty quark. An essential part of the particle identification in LHCb is made by the two Ring Imaging Cherenkov detectors. These detectors use pixel Hybrid Photon Detectors for detection and imaging of Cherenkov rings. This paper reports on measurements carried out on the Hybrid Photon Detectors, including a discussion of the results. In particular, ageing effect and image stability are studied. A fraction of the photon detectors show a degradation in performance within these fields.

Methylglyoxal (MG), a highly reactive dicarbonyl accumulates after myocardial infarction (MI), causing adverse remodelling and cardiac dysfunction. We hypothesized that therapy using bone marrow cells (BMCs) overexpressing glyoxalase1 (Glo1), the main enzyme that metabolizes MG, injected into mouse MI model would translate into better survival of transplanted cells and improve their therapeutic effect. We found that Glo1 expression is significantly reduced at 7 days post-MI. Glo1 BMCs exposed to MG in vitro displayed greater angiogenic potential and reduced reactive oxygen species production compared to wild type (WT) BMCs. However, in the mouse MI model, Glo1 BMCs did not improve cardiac function or vascularity or reduce scar formation compared to WT BMCs and saline treatments. In conclusion, Glo1 overexpression in BMCs does not confer superior therapeutic efficacy for treating MI under the conditions tested.

Résumé :
In this work, the region of the auxiliary discharge of an electron accelerator based on a non-self-sustained high-voltage glow discharge is investigated. The paper presents the analytical approach and the results of test modeling of a glow discharge, which plays the role of an auxiliary discharge for plasma generation with subsequent extraction of ions from it into the main high-voltage gap. In this glow discharge, the anode is two tungsten wires, and the cathode is the inner walls of the chamber. In the model, these regions are considered as separate independent nodes, which are connected by a layer of conducting plasma that matches the boundary conditions. A model based on the representation of an auxiliary glow discharge in the form of matched electron and ion diodes makes it possible to estimate the range of possible voltages for each of the near-electrode layers and to determine the plasma potential.

The glow that occurs in coals as a result of exposure at a temperature of T = 300 K has a luminescent character. The glow intensity increases in 50–100 ns with a subsequent decrease in ≈500 ns. The luminescence spectra of coals are presented at the moment of reaching the maximum luminescence intensity. Against the background of broadband luminescence, a number of narrow bands associated with the luminescence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are observed in all coals.

Résumé :
The photoluminescence of ZnO powders at room temperature upon excitation by microsecond pulses from the region of interband transitions and the region of exciton absorption has been studied. In the luminescence spectra, two regions characteristic of ZnO are observed: a short-wavelength region associated in the literature with exciton luminescence, and a long-wavelength region due to the presence of growth structural and impurity defects. The observed long-wavelength glow is divided into components with different glow durations, and several components that form this glow are identified. Experimental results and an analysis of the energy of formation and survival of the main structural defects make it possible to explain the luminescence of ZnO with allowance for the participation of only defects in the anionic sublattice and excitons in the process.

Résumé :
Natural gas requires some form of ignition assist in order to autoignite in the time available in a compression ignition engine. Ignition assist using a glow plug — a heated surface — was investigated using an apparatus that consists of an optically accessible constant volume combustion bomb coupled to a single cylinder CFR engine through the spark plug port. Previous studies have shown the dominant effect of fuel injection pattern and glow plug shield geometry on ignition delay, combustion rate, and fuel utilization with 1–3 fuel jets. New work has been carried out to evaluate the ability of a shielded glow plug to ignite a full nine jet symmetrical fuel injection pattern. The sensitivity of ignition delay and fuel utilization to fuel injector angular alignment relative to the glow plug, glow plug shield opening angle, and glow plug power was analyzed using in-cylinder pressure data and exhaust hydrocarbon emissions concentrations. Two glow plugs, one conventional metallic and one ceramic, and two fuel injector nozzle orifice sizes were evaluated for their effect on ignition delay. The ignition and flame propagation process was observed using high speed images. Glow plug power was shown to have a dominant effect on ignition delay and fuel utilization, with a secondary effect from fuel injector angle and glow plug opening angle. The ceramic glow plug was shown to provide superior ignition assist while consuming less power than the metallic glow plug. The larger fuel injector nozzle size increased ignition delay times, likely due to increased convective cooling of the glow plug surface from the larger gas jet. Acquired images show that the smaller fuel injector orifice size created a flammable path in two distinct areas; along the periphery of the fuel jets and between the fuel jets. The higher mass flow rate and subsequent increased mixing of the larger fuel jets created flammable paths throughout the entirety of the combustion chamber.

Résumé :
In this paper, within the framework of a self-consistent multilevel hybrid model, the kinetics of electrons in the negative glow region in similar glow discharges in helium at low and medium pressures is considered. The model is based on solving a two-dimensional kinetic equation for the electron distribution function written in the Fokker-Planck form and one-dimensional balance equations for the densities of charged and excited particles, the Poisson equation for an electric field. Within the framework of the model, the experimentally observed distributions of plasma parameters obtained using probe diagnostics are reproduced. The results are compared with the results of calculations obtained on the basis of an extended hydrodynamic model. Within the framework of the hybrid model, the formation of the spectrum of Penning electrons from impurities of complex molecules with an energy above the temperature of the main group of electrons is shown.

Résumé :
Background: Type 2 Diabetes mellitus is characterized by hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. Methylglyoxal (MG) a highly reactive dicarbonyl compound is also increased in diabetes. MG is detoxified by glyoxalase 1 (Glo-1) enzyme using reduced glutathione (GSH) as a co-factor. MG has been shown to have deleterious effects on cardiovascular cells and impairs insulin signaling. Insulin resistance is associated with diabetic cardiomyopathy. Trans-resveratrol (tRES) and Hesperetin (HES) combination has been shown to increase Glo-1 and improve insulin signaling in obese patients. Aim(s): The aim of this study is to investigate whether tRES-HES combination prevents MG-induced cardiac insulin resistance and the underlying mechanisms in cardiomyocytes in culture. Methodology: (H9C2) rat cardiomyocytes were treated with MG (100 µM) for 24 hours in the presence or absence of tRES-HES (10 µM). Glo-1 activity was determined by the formation of S-D lactoylglutathione; protein expression of P-Akt and P-GSK3b was determined using Western blot. In some experiments, cells were stimulated with insulin (100 nM) for 10 minutes to test insulin sensitivity. Results: MG reduced Glo-1 activity by ~25%, blunted insulin-induced phosphorylation of Akt and Gsk3b and increased the expression of beta-myosin heavy chain by ~50% (a marker of cardiac dysfunction) significantly (P˂0.05) compared to untreated control group of cells. Co-administration of tRES-HES combination restored Glo1 activity, maintained insulin-induced phosphorylation of Akt and GSK3b and prevented the increase in beta myosin heavy chain significantly (P<0.05). Conclusion: Induction of Glo1 prevents MG-induced cardiac insulin resistance and the increase in marker of cardiac dysfunction. This strategy could be helpful in preventing cardiovascular complications associated with diabetes.

Résumé :
Abstract Starting compression ignition engines under cold conditions is extremely challenging, due to insufficient fuel vaporization, heavy wall impingement, and low ignitability of the fuel. For gasoline compression ignition (GCI) combustion strategies, which offer the potential for an enhanced NOx-PM tradeoff with diesel-like fuel efficiency, robust ignition and combustion in very cold conditions pose a significant challenge due to the low reactivity of gasoline fuels. Based on the previous understanding of the spray, ignition and combustion processes for a GCI engine under cold conditions, this study focuses on investigating the cold combustion performance of a heavy-duty GCI engine with glow plug ignition assist. Glow plugs, commonly used for low temperature cold starts in diesel engines, are used to pre-heat a segment of the mixture to improve its ignitability. Here, CFD studies are carried out to explore the influence of a spray-guided glow plug on the spray and combustion behavior of a GCI engine under cold operating conditions. In a prior study, the underlying CFD model has been validated using experimental data from a six-cylinder, 15 L heavy-duty diesel engine operating with a compression ratio (CR) of 17.3 at a 600 rpm cold idle condition with RON92 E0 gasoline. The energy intensity required by the glow plug to deliver stable combustion isparametrically studied. The size and location of the glow plug are also parametrically varied to evaluate their effects on the combustion process. The influence of the glow plug on the in-cylinder mixture distribution and the ensuing combustion process is also investigated. In particular, the localized fuel spray distribution and mixture formation near the glow plug are examined. The results reveal that the glow plug enhances GCI combustion under cold idle conditions and that the spray-guided glow plug improves fuel vaporization, leading to a rich mixture near the glow plug and an enhancement of the combustion efficiency. In addition, the effectiveness of the glow plug at a low ambient temperature of 0°C and a 200 rpm cold start condition is evaluated. These simulations suggest that the glow plug can improve the cold start performance of a GCI engine.

Résumé :
This paper examines the influence of plastic deformation of the HSS M2 surface on the characteristics of the hardened layer after ion-plasma nitriding in the glow discharge. In the study it was found that the plastic deformation of the steel surface increases the rate of nitrogen diffusion deep into the material, due to an increase in dislocation density and the formation of microdefects, due to a highly refined grain-like ultrafine grain structure. It was also found that the plastic deformation of the steel surface before ion-plasma nitriding leads to a 2-fold increase in the thickness of the hardened layer HSS M2, due to an increase in surface free energy, which contributes to increased adsorption of the saturation element and the formation of nitrides in the near-surface layer of nitrided material.
