Résumé :
This chapter addresses pain relief in areas of deprivation and conflict. There is variability in the causes of pain worldwide, including HIV/AIDS, torture-related pain and suffering, and war-related injuries. There is also great variability in the availability of adequate pain treatment worldwide due to limitations of education, training, knowledge of pain and its treatment, beliefs and communication about pain, and the inadequacy of access to drugs and palliative care in many countries. Research reflects the importance of extending pain care worldwide and addressing ethical and political issues surrounding pain care.

It considers the widespread nature of education services deprivation and the consequent negative impacts for well-being and growth. The chapter examines the subsistence right to education services and the role of this right within the United Nations system of human rights. It also examines the special role of girls’ education, education quality, and accountability; and the potential role for schools to serve as basic goods provision centers. It concludes with a consideration of demand-side issues and education provisioning processes, including the relative role of public and private provision.

Résumé :
Much has been written about deaf identities; however, no single book has focused specifically on how different academic disciplines conceptualize deaf identities in one fell swoop. This book does exactly that. It is a unique compilation of multidisciplinary perspectives on the lens of deaf identities written by scholars representing a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, counseling, education, literary criticism, practical religion, philosophy, psychology, sociology, social work, and Deaf Studies. Nowhere else can one find careful scrutiny of the meaning of deaf identities within, for example, the disciplines of philosophy and religion. Where else can one find a sense of identity in “passing” as a deaf person instead of “almost passing” as a hearing person? Where else can one examine mutating identities in progressing from Spiderman to the Incredible Hulk? The book focuses on how the contributors perceive what deaf identities represent, how these identities develop, and the societal influences that shape these identities. Intersectionality; examination of medical, educational, and family systems; linguistic deprivation; the role of oppressive influences; what the “deaf body” is about; strategies to facilitate positive deaf identity development; and how ethical values are interpreted are among the multiple topics examined in the search to better understand how deaf identities come into being. In presenting their deaf identity paradigms, contributors have endeavored to intertwine both scholarly and personal perspectives in their efforts to personalize academic content. The result is a book that reinforces the multiple ways in which deaf identities are manifested.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
We measure multidimensional poverty in India using National Sample Survey Organization data from 2014–15 to 2017–18. We use income, health, education, and standard of living to measure the multidimensional poverty index (MPI). The MPI headcount declined from 26.9 to 13.75 per cent over the study period. The all-India estimates indicate that 144 million people were lifted from poverty during this period. We include different health dimensions, factoring in insurance, institutional coverage, antenatal care, and chronic conditions. Income is the dominant instrument with the highest contribution to the MPI, followed by insurance. Cooking, sanitation, and education also have significant weights. The decline in deprivation is steeper in rural areas than urban areas. Our state-level estimates reveal that 20 states report less than 10 per cent headcount poverty, up from six states. COVID-19 may lead to reversals of these gains, with poverty rising to pre-2014–15 levels, rising more steeply in rural areas.

Résumé :
This chapter describes the basic goods approach to global policy priorities. It reviews the treatment of human need in political philosophy, economics, and social policy and defines basic goods as those goods and services that meet objective human needs. The chapter identifies a set of basic goods that includes nutritious food, clean water, sanitation, health services, education services, housing, electricity, and human security services. It gives a sense of the magnitudes of deprivations for each of these basic goods. The chapter goes on to link the basic goods approach to minimalist ethics and subsistence rights, to assess the role of basic goods provision in growth processes, and to assess general approaches to basic goods provision.

Résumé :
This chapter provides an overview of research on the behavioral dimension of low socioeconomic status and a set of theoretical and empirical principles for better understanding it. In particular, the chapter focuses on those behaviors that are claimed to exacerbate a situation of poverty or deprivation, such as poor academic performance, myopic financial decisions, early child-bearing, consumption of unhealthy foods, and engaging in unhealthy lifestyle habits. Though such behavioral patterns have been used to make claims as to the defective values or motives of the poor, the chapter argues that studying them rigorously, aided by the experimental method, leads to a more nuanced and accurate picture, in which psychology is systematically shaped by socioeconomic position. After reviewing evidence from education, public health, and behavioral economics concerning the behavioral dimension of low socioeconomic status, the chapter suggests an organizing set of mechanisms that might structure a comprehensive explanatory account of it.

Résumé :
We invited experts in early child development, education, and care to clarify issues of universal importance for the well-being of human worlds. They include teachers who appreciate that every child is born for a life of learning and needs to develop this in a community of joyful friendships to share its culture of arts and techniques. We address the difficulties of children and their families struggling to live in social deprivation or poverty when the administration and politics of an ambitious government are principally concerned with how industry makes wealth for a minority. Evidence we present demonstrates that leadership to address and support the creative abilities of all children and their families in their years before school is essential. Such leadership recognizes the importance of these abilities for the development of healthy, cooperative, and self-confident citizens who can secure the health of the community and benefit its economic productivity in a rich and peaceful world.

Résumé :
This edited volume presents both classic and contemporary conceptual, empirical, and applied perspectives on the role of comparisons with other people—a core aspect of social life—that have implications for the self-concept, opinions, subjective and physical well-being, conformity, decision-making, group behavior, education, and social movements. The volume is comprised of original chapters, authored by noted experts, divided into three sections: basic comparison processes, neighboring fields, and applications. The first section is comprised of chapters that update classic theories and present advances, such as the dominating effect of local versus global comparisons, an analysis of the psychology of competition, how comparisons across different domains influence self-concept and achievement, and the integral connections between stereotyping and comparison. The second section introduces perspectives from neighboring fields that shed new light on social comparison. These chapters range from judgment and decision science, cognitive psychology, social network theory, and animal social behavior. The third section presents chapters that describe applications of comparison, including relative deprivation; health psychology; the effects of income inequality on well-being; the relationships among social hierarchies, power, and comparison; and the interconnections of psychological processes such as comparison and differential construal that favor the status quo and can discourage social action in the face of injustice and inequity.

Résumé :
Since the dawn of colonialism in Southern Africa, the province of the Eastern Cape emerged as the cradle of African resistance against colonial oppression. A closer look at the province reveals opportunities for progress and ultimate resurgence of economic and social development, yet conflated by a myriad of challenges. This book brings together different perspectives and realities of the post-apartheid Eastern Cape to provide an in-depth exploration of the developmental dilemmas that the province faces. This book provides insightful reflections on development and its sustainability some 25 years since democracy, and specifically focuses on sociological and demographic realities in the areas of migration and its impact on families. The book further grapples with the role of the state in developing culture and heritage in the province, pointing to fundamental and multiple challenges of deprivation, unemployment and subsequent community resilience in a variety of sectors including health and education. While it provides a historical analysis of contextual issues facing the province, the book also highlights the agency of the people of the Eastern Cape in confronting challenges in leadership, accountability, citizen participation and service provision. The book will be useful for development scholars and practitioners who are interested in understanding the state of the province, and similar settings, and the degree to which it has emerged from the shadows of its colonial and apartheid legacies.

Silveira, Larissa de Carvalho, et Renata Meira Véras. Associated factors and more frequent sleep disorders in university students : Integrative review. Ludomedia, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36367/ntqr.13.2022.e695.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Introduction: Sleep disorders affect quality of life on three levels, short, medium and long term. University students are groups prone to changes in sleep quality, as they live with sleep deprivation, among other factors such as anxiety, stress, excessive use of social networks, cell phones and television. The importance of sleep for undergraduates becomes evident in the face of the consequences that poor sleep quality can cause, in addition to allowing professionals in the areas of education and health to create programs that promote and encourage routines with beneficial consequences for students. Objectives: To review the literature on the most frequent sleep disorders in university students and the factors associated with sleep. Methods: This study is a systematic review. The search was performed in December 2021, in the electronic journals PubMed and CAPES journals. The time frame comprised the period from 2017 to 2021. In the end, 20 articles were selected to compose this review. Results: Regarding the main sleep disorders of undergraduates, the main outcomes found in the studies were insufficient sleep, long latency, nocturnal awakenings, excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia and delayed sleep-wake phase disorder. Factors that are modifiable and non-modifiable for the occurrence of sleep disorders, as well as protective factors that can mitigate the occurrence of sleep disorders. Conclusions: The number of articles included in the review showed that over the five years the interest in researching the subject has been increasing. Even so, there is still a need for more effort from researchers to understand which factors are associated with reduced hours of sleep and how society and universities contribute to this practice of increasing waking hours and reducing sleep hours.
