Résumé :
New types of profile products make complex use of bimetals. These materials possess a set of properties such as strength, corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity, heat resistance, wear resistance. For the processing of such products, it is advisable to use electrophysical processing methods, one of which is the technology of copy-piercing electrical discharge machining (EDM). Currently, EDM is one of the most common methods for processing products from modern bimetal materials. An urgent task is to study the EDM process of bimetallic materials. The aim of the work was to increase the efficiency and accuracy of the EDM process of bimetallic products using electrode-tools with different physical and mechanical properties. Bimetal—weld coated steel backing, base material—09G2S steel, surfacing material—M1 copper were used. The processing of the bimetallic workpiece was carried out on an Electronica Smart CNC copy-piercing EDM machine. EI used graphite, copper, and composite. A theoretical model was developed that allows calculation of the amount of removal of bimetallic material of steel–copper depending on the EDM modes and the ET (electrode tool) material. During the processing of the steel layer, regardless of the EI material, microcracks were formed along the grain boundaries, and during the processing of the copper layer, enlarged holes resulted.

Résumé :
Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) working fluid as a medium can control electrical discharges occur, carry away the heat, compress discharge channel and help remove the corrosion products out of the gap. The main working fluids used in EDM are oil-based working fluid, gas-based working fluid, powder mixed working fluid, gas mixed working fluid and water-based working fluid. In order to improve the green and safety of EDM working fluid, an oil-in-water working fluid is proposed. A gap flow field model of EDM is established by using external flushing fluid. The flow field distribution, pressure distribution and corrosion products distribution of the machining gap are analyzed by using computational fluid dynamics. The effects of inlet pressure, processing depth and electrode size on the flow field are studied. The simulated results show that within a certain range, removal effect of the corrosion products will increase with inlet velocity and the size of electrode and decrease with processing depth.

Résumé :
Electro discharge machining (EDM) process is a non-conventional and non-contact machining operation which is used in industry for high precision products. EDM is known for machining hard and brittle conductivematerials since it can melt any electrically conductive material regardless of its hardness. The workpiece machined by EDM depends on thermal conductivity, electrical resistivity, and melting points of the materials. The tool and the workpiece are adequately both immersed in a dielectric medium, such as, kerosene, deionised water or any other suitable fluid. This paper is reviewed comprehensively on types of EDM operation. A brief discussion is also done on the machining responses and mathematical modelling.

Résumé :
Introduction. Polymer composite materials (PCM) are used to improve the mechanical properties and increase the working period of products. For the processing of products made of PCM, the use of electrophysical processing methods is standard. One of these methods is copy-piercing electrical discharge machining (EDM). The use of such methods for processing PCM is due to its high physical and mechanical characteristics and the complexity of processing by blade methods. Considering the fact that the PCM element is a binder – epoxy resin, which is destroyed at the edges of the resulting holes and grooves during EDM, PCM can be considered difficult to process. During the EDM of holes in PCM products, the temperature rises, and inefficient cooling often occurs in the processing zone. The paper is devoted to theoretical simulation in the Ansys package, which makes it possible to evaluate the impact of flushing method on the efficiency of the EDM of PCM products based on numerical simulation in finite element analysis software systems. The aim of the work is to increase the productivity of the processes of EDM for PCM products. Methods. Experimental studies were carried out according to the method of a classical experiment on a copy-piercing electrical discharge Smart CNC machine. The workpiece was processed at a constant voltage U = 50 V, pulse on-time Ton = 100 µs and current: I = 10 A. For theoretical simulation of the flow, the ANSYS CFX 20.1 software was used. Flow distribution simulation was carried out at three processing depths (2 mm, 10 mm, 15 mm), as well as at three nozzle inclination angles (15°, 45°, 75°). Results And Discussion. The analysis of the data obtained showed that in the case of the EDM of PCM, the angle of the location of the flushing nozzles should be taken into account in order to increase the productivity of processing deep, blind holes. It is established that the highest performance value is achieved when the nozzles are located at an angle of 15˚. The laminar motion prevails. With this arrangement of the nozzles, the value of the liquid pressure and the removal of the sludge are stable both with the EDM of PCM to a depth of 2 mm, and when processing to a depth of 15 mm. It is noted that for processing holes with a depth of 10 mm or more, it is worth considering the angle of inclination of the flushing nozzle for effective processing, it is necessary to remove eroded particles from the gap. In the process of conducting an experimental study, when processing holes with a depth of 15 mm, sticking of sludge to the electrode-tool was observed, as well as the closure of the EDM process, the occurrence of secondary discharges in the processing zone, which caused the processing to stop.

Résumé :
Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is not limited to the strength and hardness of conductive materials, and is a non-contact special processing technology. In micro-EDM, there are problems such as untimely axial positioning, unstable inter-electrode machining voltage, and difficulty in discharging inter-electrode electric erosion products. This paper considers a magnetic actuator with fast response and high accuracy as the local actuator for a micro-EDM. By introducing a domain adjustment mechanism, a variable domain fuzzy PID controller was designed to control the inter-electrode voltage control system of the magnetic actuator for micro-EDM using an intelligent control strategy. During the micro-EDM machining process, the controlled magnetic actuator drives the tool electrode in the axial direction for rapid micro-positioning, thus maintaining effective inter-electrode machining voltage and achieving a high-speed and high precision EDM. Simulation and experimental results showed that compared with traditional micro-EDM, the machining efficiency of the variable domain fuzzy PID control magnetic actuator, and traditional micro-EDM cooperative control, was increased by 40%, the machining process was more stable, and the quality of the machined surface was better.

Résumé :
Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) is a machining method suitable for repair and maintenance operations in nuclear power plants. Crack removal and material sampling are two common operations where EDM is used in the nuclear power industry. Each crack removal or material sampling operation is unique, a new EDM-tool is therefore designed for every operation. This, together with the fact that the electrode used in the EDM-tool usually wears out before the crack is removed or the sample has been collected, is the foundation of this thesis. The objective was to develop one or several concepts of a modular EDM-tool with the ability to change electrode at repair location. This to shorten the development time for EDM-tools and the time for electrode change during an EDM operation. The concepts would be developed to the extent that a prototype could be manufactured and tested. The result is in accordance to the objective with one fully developed concept ready for manufacturing. It has not yet been manufactured, and therefore not been tested. There are still some sections of the tool that needs to be verified, for example the electric supply to the electrode. The concept consists of; a slim EDM-tool with the ability to lock the rotating electrode shaft, compact dielectric fluid- and electric-supply, hydraulic actuator with belt drive and an electrode magazine with place for 3 electrodes. Keywords: Nuclear, EDM, Electric Discharge Machining, Product development, Crack removal
The work presented in this dissertation is concerned with the microstructures andsurface roughness of test slabs of Ti-6Al-4V produced by one of powder based AdditiveManufacturing (AM) technique namely Electron Beam melting (EBM). The effects of processparameters of a EBM system and geometry factors of a EBM build such as slabs’ thickness andheight etc. on the microstructure and the surface roughness of the EBM produced Ti-6Al-4Vhave being investigated. The processing parameters of the EBM system involved in the presentwork include beam current, scan speed, offset focus and scanning length etc. In this study threedifferent batches of samples were prepared. Microstructures of EBM built Ti-6Al-4V werestudied using Optical Microscopy (OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), TransmissionElectron Microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Confocal microscopy and imageanalysis codes ImageJ’s routine SurfCharJ were used to quantify the surface roughness of the testslabs. The microstructures of EBM built Ti-6Al-4V in general consist of columnar grains of priorβ phase. Inside the columnar grains there is a typical (α+β) microstructure of titanium alloyscontaining Widmanstätten α platelets and rod-shaped β phase. Grain boundary α layer has alsobeen observed on the grain boundaries of prior b columnar grains. By using TEM, the β phase inEBM built Ti-6Al-4V has been identified as a rod-like structure located on the grain boundariesof the fine a grains and often grows up along the build direction. The size of the β rods is about200nm and the distance between the β rods is ranged between 0.5 -2μm. Chemical compositionsfor different phases have been measured by TEM/EDX and volume fraction of the β phase in theEBM Ti-6Al-4V has been determined to be 2.7%. The phase transformation sequence in EBMbuilt Ti-6Al-4V has been discussed according to processing history and microstructuresobserved. It has been observed that, the size, number and geometry of prior β columnar graindepend on the sample thickness and other process parameters setting. The diameter of columnargrain varies between 2-70μm. The increase in size, number and regularity of columnar grains hasbeen observed with increase in sample thickness, beam energy density and scanning length. While with increase in height of the build it decreases. The length and smoothness of α plateletsincreases with increase in diameter of prior β columnar grain. The β phase rods are unaffected bysample thickness and process parameter settings. The sample thickness and beam energy densityhas a strong effect on the surface roughness of the test slabs. The value of surface roughnesscoefficient Ra for different test slabs varies between 1-20μm. It is observed that the surfaceroughness increases of the test slab increases with increase in thickness of the slab and beamenergy density. The possible reasons for these variations in microstructures and surfaceroughness have been discussed.

In today’s world, high quality product are need of the time. The low-quality product results in the high cost. This can be explained from the quality graph below 1) Prevention cost can be define as the issue/bugs found out before the deployment/delivered to customer. This cost is initially very low but in the longer run goes up 2) Failure cost includes cost of losing customers, Root cause analysis and rectification. This cost is defiantly very huge Figure 11 : Cost of Quality Source: https://www.researchgate.net/ 5 If there can be any mechanism that can help to identify the expected issues in the prevention cost then the overall all cost of quality can be reduce as shown in below graph Figure 12 : Modified Cost of Quality Source: https://www.researchgate.net/ Electronic and Design Automation (EDA) Industry is backbone of Semiconductor Industry as it provide software tool aiding in the development of Semi-Conductors chips. EDA tools are from specification to the foundry input. Re- spin means incident post Tape-out chips does not function as required and re-build is required. Cost of the tape out is minimum 5 million of dollars. Major re-spin reason is functionality issues, therefore function verification tools delivered by EDA needs to be always of high quality. A major problem faced by the Functional verification tool R&D team is to predict the numbers of the bugs that might have been introduced during the design phase to sign off the completeness and quality. If these bugs can be predicted, then the COQ can be reduced. Hence saving million of dollar to company and customer. Machine learning, a upcoming new discipline, define scientific study of algorithm and using computing power develop prediction model so that certainty of the task can be managed. In this project, prediction model for expected bugs during the development of the software is designed to help the Product manager to get confidence on quality.
This PhD research focuses on image processing in digital communications. A transmission system is a system that transmits information from one place to another through a physical path. Because this path is subject to interference and propagation disturbances, errors can occur during the reception. Additional errors may also be generated by the system itself. In order to achieve better performances, most image coding standards exploit perceptual properties of the human visual system to remove data from the source, thus introducing distortion. In this dissertation, we study and conceive several PDE (Partial Differential Equations)-based models for image restoration, so to attenuate visual impact of these errors. In particular we propose a new image sequence denoising model, as well as a multiresolution inpainting method. Current applications include compression artifacts removal and error correction on JPEG/MPEG/H. 26x images/sequences, and on a joint source/channel coding scheme as well

Résumé :
The titanium alloy, Ti-6Al-4V, is vastly studied and used in many applications because it has a transformation microstructure, which can be tailored for apt properties that are consistent up to 500°C. Compared to conventional steels, this alloy favours certain applications due to its high specific strength, hardenability, corrosion resistance, biocompatibility and weldability. Its weldability makes the alloy a good candidate for additive manufacturing (AM). Ti-6Al-4V parts are widely built by the AM process of electron beam melting (EBM). However, heat transfer remains crucial in EBM process. The high intensity localized, moving, electron beam heat source and the rapid self-cooling are critical, especially in thin parts/ sections. When thin sections are built by the EBM process, there will be microstructural variation in their build direction, which can lead to the variation of their mechanical properties. It is necessary to understand the microstructure and mechanical properties of thin sections when they are used as functional parts in various applications in aerospace, automotive, medical, etc. industries. The microstructure, tribological behaviour and mechanical properties of Ti-6Al-4V, as-built EBM thin plates were studied by means of various hardness, scratch and tensile testing. The hardness and scratch tests were performed on the thin plates to correlate the microstructural variation. In-situ micro tensile test was performed inside the scanning electron microscope (SEM), to see the sample’s deformation behaviour. Microstructural characterization revealed equiaxed grains in the transverse section and the longitudinal surface exhibited columnar grains elongated along the build direction. The size of the equiaxed grains are found to vary across the thickness of the plate. The indentation and scratch hardness also vary in correlation with the varying grain size across the plate’s thickness. The micro tensile results reveal that the tensile properties of the thin plate are comparable to that of its bulk Ti-6Al-4V counterpart.

Résumé :
Product placement, also referred to as stealth advertising, raises important questions when it comes to television because a far larger audience views television than movies. Product placement in newscasts is even more controversial. Television news is expected to be free of persuasive attempts and provide citizens with basic information that is of public importance. Yet, product placement blurs the line between journalism and commercial promotion, thus destroying the integrity of the news. Product placement in newscasts raises ethical questions about the effect it has on viewers, provided that they do not realize that they are presented with commercials, framed as news story. Yet, this paper argues that, since viewers focus on the actual news and do not elaborate consciously on the advertised product or brand, product placement in newscasts has little effect on their brand recall. To support this hypothesis the paper compares brand recall from product placement and commercials. Results revealed that this hypothesis is partially true. Important discovery from this study is the fact that product placement directly affects news credibility.

Résumé :
Metal Additive Manufacturing (MAM) has had a tremendous impact in reimagining the design and manufacture of products in a number of industries. The use of MAM to directly produce products continues to be investigated; however, the area of manufacturing tooling has yet to be fully explored. MAM provides a unique opportunity to introduce features that make manufacturing tooling better equipped to efficiently produce complex products. A recent example includes MAM produced molds for the injection molding industry. MAM, in this case, provides the ability to introduce unique features, such as cooling channels, that could not be introduced practically with SM processes. This study explores the use of MAM towards the engineering and design of Extrusion Die Tooling for plastic extruded products. Plastic extrusion is a high-volume manufacturing process for a broad range of products from tubing to window frames. These extruded plastic products come in not only a range of sizes, but also different polymer materials. A series of extrusion dies are currently needed in the process in order to achieve the final shape of the product. These dies are effectively designed in two dimensional Computer Aided Design (CAD) packages, because of the current preferred method of fabrication, wire Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM). This study explores the effect of MAM on the extrusion die engineering design process. The explored cases center on common extruded plastic products including tubing and constant wall U-channels. The study first describes how sets of extrusion dies are currently designed in CAD in order to produce the desired extruded product features with established advanced manufacturing processes (EDM). The study then details the effect of using the MAM alternative on the design process, CAD methods selected, and the extrusion die features. The impact of MAM on the extruded die design process are discussed in order to provide guidelines for when it should be considered in order to effectively achieve features on the described extruded plastic products.

Résumé :
Recent developments in Computer Aided Design (CAD) have drastically reduced overall design cycle time and cost. In this paper, wirePATH, a new method for rapid direct tooling, is presented. By using specialized interactive segmentation computer software and wire electrical discharge machining (wire EDM), wirePATH can reduce manufacturing time and cost for injection molds, casting patterns, and dies. Compared to other conventional-mold making methods, wirePATH can reduce fabrication time by as much as 40 to 70%. Wirepath can use a combination of wire EDM and other processes. Our method provides a new means to produce a greater variety in products by changing only portions of the tooling. Segments allow a part of a mold to be replaced to accommodate design changes and repair. WirePATH enables new applications of wire EDM to more complex shapes by bridging the gaps between CAD, our method, wire EDM and conventional manufacturing processes.

Résumé :
Abstract Component-Commonality implies products using many common parts, desensitized to the range of product applications (defined as noise in this approach), and meeting the functionality objectives of each product. This paper presents a methodology for developing common components and applies it to a sample problem Basically, the methodology involves nine sequential steps. These steps utilize the major concepts of analytical modeling, economic decision matrices (EDM), quality Loss-functions (QLS) for variates and weighted utilities, stochastic models, finite element (FE) simulations for concurrent engineering, and statistical experiments for considering the uncertainty in either application, statistics or managerial decisions. In this paper, the statistical experiments utilize Taguchi’s orthogonal arrays (TOA). The details of these steps are illustrated by application to a problem involving a slider-link subjected to a wide range of noise (inertia/pressure loadings). Six candidate-designs of steel, aluminum and titanium, are generated using an analytical model and a sensitivity study with sequential TOA. These designs are ranked using cost and weight and factor-of-safety with respect to yielding, A Refining EDM with a three part robustness criteria (RC) selected two candidates (best was steel, followed by aluminum) considering Inner noise in the managerial decisions. Verification of the Refining EDM model via a Detailing EDM with a stochastic model and FE simulations is presented in a companion paper.

Résumé :
The FAO has projected a doubling in world demand for seafood during the 21 ed from aquaculture of marine fish and shrimps fed primarily on fishmeal-based aquafeeds. However, current practices of high intensity monoculture of shrimp in coastal ponds and fish in offshore pens have been strongly criticized as being ecologically and socially unsustainable. This view derives from un- checked eutrophication of coastal marine ecosystems from fish farm effluents, and the destruction of coastal estuarine ecosystems by shrimp farm constructions, plus aquaculture’s reliance on wild-caught small fish - which are excellent food for humans, but instead are rendered into fishmeal and fish oil for formulating aquafeeds. Fishmeal-sparing and waste- reduction aquafeeds can only delay the time when fed aquaculture product are priced out of affordability for most consumers. Additionally, replacement of fishmeal protein and fish oil by terrestrial plant sources such as soybean meal and oil directly raises food costs for human communities in developing nations. New formulations incorporating sustainably-produced marine algal proteins and oils are growing in acceptance as viable and practical alternatives. This BARD collaborative research project investigated a sustainable water-sparing spray/drip culture method for producing high-protein marine macrophyte meals for incorporation into marine shrimp and fish diets. The spray culture work was conducted at laboratory-scale in the USA (UCSD-SIO) using selected Gracilariaand Ulvastrains isolated and supplied by UCONN, and outdoors at pilot-scale in Israel (IOLR-NCM) using local strains of Ulvasp., and nitrogen/phosphorus-enriched fish farm effluent to fertilize the spray cultures and produce seaweed biomass and meals containing up to 27% raw protein (dry weight content). Auburn University (USA) in consultation with TAMUS (USA) used the IOLR meals to formulate diets and conduct marine shrimp feeding trials, which resulted in mixed outcomes, indicating further work was needed to chemically identify and remove anti-nutritional elements present in the IOLR-produced seaweed meals.

In contrast to conventional powertrains from internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEV), the tribological performance of powertrains of electric vehicles (EVs) must be further evaluated by considering new critical operating conditions such as electrical environments. The operation of any type of electric motor produces shaft voltages and currents due to various hardware configurations and factors. Furthermore, the common application of inverters intensifies this problem. It has been reported that the induced shaft voltages and currents can cause premature failure problems in tribological components such as bearings and gears due to accelerated wear and/or fatigue. It is ascribed to effects of electric discharge machining (EDM), also named, sparking wear caused by shaft currents and poor or increasingly diminishing dielectric strength of lubricants. A great effort has been done to study this problem in bearings, but it has not yet been the case for gears. Considering that EVs powertrains can be configurated with an electric motor coupled to a single-speed or multi-speed transmission, it is expected that shaft currents can also affect gears to some extent. The pin-on-disc test has been widely used to study sliding wear of gear materials under comparable or realistic operating conditions. This accelerated test is effective for screening materials, lubricants and operating conditions allowing evaluations of their friction and wear properties. However, it has not been implemented for studying gear materials under electrified environments. Thus, this paper aims to explore the friction coefficient and wear of gear materials under non-electrified and electrified sliding in a pin-on-disc tester applying typical of EVs powertrain shaft currents during sliding. The tests were carried out at two different DC currents under comparable gear dry and lubricated sliding contact conditions. Friction coefficient, wear volumes and morphologies were evaluated and reported in this work.
