This dissertation focuses on assessing the sustainability of China’s long-term economic growth. The evaluation is performed, first, by examining economic and social issues from the past thirty years that shape China to where it is now, and second, by taking an empirical approach in understanding what factors are critical to China’s economic growth. The empirical model framework consists of three blocks representing the main areas of development in China: economic growth, health and environmental development, and the model is estimated with two-stage least squares methodology. We identify strong, simultaneous feedback between economic growth and health development. The estimation results show that continued improvements in the health status of Chinese workers are important to support stronger economic growth in China. Environmental stress is detrimental to China’s long-term health status, which indirectly reduces the country’s long-term economic potential. We test the robustness of our model, and confirm that, the proposed model setup produce a set of forecast values that are closer to the actual values than a model without health- and environmental-related variables.

As the energy price goes up, more and more concern has been focused on the sustainable development of residential houses. One of the best solution will be the low energy housing-passive house. The concept of passive house has been popular in Germany and whole Europe in the last 10 years, however, there is no official residential passive house standard project in China now. In this thesis, the feasibility of developing passive house in China will be analysed. Combined with the mature experience from the passive house project in Europe, a Chinese way of building the passive house will be provided. According to the previous studies, a lot of knowledge of passive house projects in Sweden have been referred to help doing the analysis about the passive house development in China. Due to the fact that there is no passive house had done before in China, the some assumptions have been made to help with the economy analysis. It is assumed that one passive house residential project will be built in Shenyang city, Liaoning Province. After the analysing and calculating, it can be concluded that it is possible and profitable to develop the passive house standard residential projects in China. It has a bright future.

Each individual is both a consumer and an investor in the market. It is the common goal of every investor to achieve a high return on investment through the portfolio of profit maximization. As a result, the ratio of assets in a portfolio has become a hot topic. In China, real estate and the stock market are two main markets favoured by both individual and institutional investors. And there is a significant economic link between the two markets. Therefore, their mutual relationship and long-term and short-term causality can provide good guidance for investors. This paper studies the causality and correlation between stock trading volume and real estate trading volume in 31 provinces of mainland China. The empirical results in this paper is based on a panel data from 2000 to 2016 and divides 31 provinces into three different economic regions. The panel unit root test and the Pedroni co-integration test were carried out. The Hausman test was used to select among different estimation methods. Panel Mean Group is found the most suitable analysis method. It is found that the main industries in different provinces may affect the short-term causal relationship between real estate and the stock market. But in the long run, the causal relationship between real estate and the stock market is two-way and stable.

Este relatório de estágio surge no seguimento de um estágio realizado na empresa Advancefigure, S.A., uma imobiliária chinesa em Lisboa, no âmbito do mestrado em Relações Internacionais do Instituto Superior de Ciências Sociais e Poltíicas da Universidade de Lisboa. Este estágio teve como objetivo geral adquirir conhecimentos práticos sobre as relações económicas entre a China e Portugal, a partir duma experiência de trabalho nesta área. Ao longo das últimas duas décadas, a importância do stock de Investimento Direto Estrangeiro (IDE) tem vindo a aumentar de forma sustentada, devido à sua influência positiva no crescimento do Produto Interno Bruto (PIB) mundial (Costa, 2010). No que concerne ao IDE chinês em Portugal, apesar das importantes transações que grandes empresas chinesas têm feito em setores como a banca e a energia, há ainda um grande caminho a percorrer no sentido da criação de condições para um melhor envolvimento das Pequenas e Médias Empresas (PME), como é o caso de Advancefigure, S.A.. A pertinência do tema deste relatório de estágio prende-se com o entusiasmo chinês pelo mercado imobiliário português gerado pelo Programa de Autorizações de Residência para Investimento (ARI), mais conhecido como Visto Gold, e os principais desafios e oportunidades que se colocam às empresas chinesas em Portugal. Em termos metodológicos, foi usada uma triangulação entre métodos qualitativos e quantitativos, combinando análise de dados estatsíticos, análise de conteúdo de relatórios e legislação, e recolha de dados durante a experiência quotidiana no estágio. Ao longo do relatório as questões do IDE e dos programas de vistos para investidores são cruzados com os desafios enfrentados no trabalho quotidiano de uma empresa imobiliária chinesa a operar em Portugal, resultando no final numa reflexão em torno dos desafios jurdíicos, mas também culturais que se colocam ao IDE e a necessidade de haver estratégias articuladas para os enfrentar.
This internship report follows an internship held at Advancefigure, S.A., a Chinese real estate company in Lisbon, as part of the master's degree in International Relations of Institute of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Lisbon. This internship aimed to acquire practical knowledge about the economic relations between China and Portugal, from a working experience in this area. Over the past two decades, the importance of the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) stock has been steadily increasing, due to its positive influence on the growth of the world Gross Domestic Product (GDP) (Costa, 2010). Regarding Chinese FDI in Portugal, despite the important transactions that large Chinese companies have been doing in sectors such as banking and energy, there is still a long way to go in creating the conditions for better involvement of small and medium enterprises (PME), such as the Advancefigure, SA. The relevance of the theme of this internship report is the Chinese enthusiasm for the Portuguese real estate market generated by the Investment Residence Permits (ARI) program, better known as Golden Visa, and the main challenges and opportunities that Chinese companies are facing in Portugal. In methodological terms, a triangulation between qualitative and quantitative methods was used, combining statistical data analysis, report content analysis and legislation, and data collection during everyday internship experience. Throughout the report the issues of FDI and investor visa programs are intersected with the challenges faced in the day-to-day work of a Chinese real estate company operating in Portugal, ultimately resulting in a reflection on the legal, but also cultural challenges that arise, and the need for articulated strategies to address them.

This research examines the form of economic insecurity generated in China in recent years, and how the state’s response to this can be characterised, particularly focusing on how the problem is addressed at the local level. The research begins with a broad discussion explaining the background and reviewing the existing literature on economic security in a global context. It then takes a broad look at the general economic security context and related literature in China. It found that China is shifting away from the old types of economic and social structure, which are merging into a new system. However, during the transition period, neoliberalism has influenced the welfare system in China, and welfare provision by the state has been dramatically reduced. This thesis further explores and examines the characteristics of recent social security system reforms in China by exploring developments in both the social and economic systems from a historical perspective. It argues that social security should not only aim to prevent and alleviate poverty, but should also take into account a wider perspective that accepts that all citizens, not only those who are impoverished, need a certain degree of security. A case study was undertaken based on data from interviews and a questionnaire collected in a local secondary city in China. The thesis makes an important contribution to the study of welfare policy development and implementation in China. It finds that one of the main reasons for economic insecurity is China’s welfare development contains a large degree of informality. This informality not only generates economic insecurity in the labour market, but also in the way government institutions provide services. Local government has failed to take enough responsibility for implementing social policies and guaranteeing basic income security. Based on the discussions of welfare state models in Esping-Andersen (1996, 1999) and Ringen and Ngok (2013) merged with the characteristics of social development in China, this study also proposes a new dimension for the classification of the welfare state in China as a decentralised socialist-market liberal-conservative welfare model.

The central question this thesis seeks to answer is: why has there been a change in Taiwan’s economic policymaking towards China since the 1990s. The study looks at this changing relationship through the lenses of two International Political Economy theories, economic nationalism vis-à-vis economic liberalism. By examining three distinctive Taiwanese administrations: Lee Teng-hui (1990-1999), Chen Shui-bian (2000-2007) and Ma Ying-jeou (2008-Present), this study explores the motivations underpinning Taiwan’s different economic policy choices. To illustrate, the study considers internal factors,Taiwan’s domestic politics and the role of its business society, and external factors,China’s rise in economic, diplomatic and military aspects and an important regional/global event. This thesis finds that it is the nationalist goal of protecting Taiwan’s security and maintaining its ‘sovereignty’ that has motivated its cross-Strait economic policies, and in the case of Taiwan, this nationalist purpose is dependent upon the assessment of China’s expanding strength. These findings are important because, as the thesis suggests, there is a potential framework to understand the way in which small states embrace policy choices reflecting their regional realities with large powerful states.

Grazie all’esperienza svolta lo scorso anno durante un tirocinio formativo presso la sussidiaria di una società di consulenza italiana a Shanghai, ho avuto modo di approfondire la tematica dei forum economici. Oltre ai progetti di ingresso, crescita ed espansione nel mercato cinese delle imprese estere, l’Ambrosetti (Beijing) Consulting LTD si occupa di promuovere la realizzazione di eventi e forum di alto livello su temi economici e finanziari verso istituzioni e enti pubblici cinesi.   La mia tesi approfondisce l’aspetto dei forum economici e va ad indagare le motivazioni che spingono i CEO delle più importanti società estere a partecipare a questa tipologia di eventi internazionali.   Il primo capitolo, dopo un’attenta introduzione sul contesto geopolitico internazionale, analizza le motivazioni alla partecipazione e i principali macroargomenti trattati durante le sessioni dei forum. La seconda parte propone un’analisi più approfondita per ciascuno dei maggiori summit internazionali. La terza presenta un’introduzione sull’attuale contesto economico cinese e le motivazioni che spingono la Cina ad una partecipazione sempre più attiva ad eventi di carattere internazionale. La quarta parte approfondisce uno ad uno i maggiori forum organizzati a livello locale e un paio di forum bilaterali istituiti con altri paesi.   Il secondo capitolo indaga sul mercato della consulenza in Cina, da un punto di vista legale e concorrenziale. La seconda parte approfondisce, infine, l’organizzazione della società presso cui ho svolto il mio periodo di stage e analizza il Forum annuale organizzato a Cernobbio da The European House Ambrosetti.

Résumé :
The continued funding of America's persistent trade and fiscal deficits has sparked debate among international economists. One controversial explanation argues that East Asia is pursuing "Bretton Woods II" and funding American deficits as part of a greater development policy. This paper examines the Chinese policy response to the global economic crisis and finds that China's policy actions provide evidence for "Bretton Woods II." Furthermore, the Sino-American relationship is now characterized by codependence which has implications for the policy decisions of each country.

Provincial competitiveness is strategically and imperatively important for China to achieve and sustain its economic leadership in the global economy. Albeit recent attention of scholars and government officials, the studies to date have produced limited empirical evidence that could aid policy makers to understand the contributing factors and development strategies for provincial competitiveness. Hence, this thesis develops a production approach to decompose Chinese provincial competitiveness index into two productive-efficiency-based components, so as to uncover development strategies hidden in the index. The resulting model fully retains the information embodied in the original index and implements a mechanism to generate development strategies. Applying the proposed model to China’s provincial data of competitiveness for the period 2005-2008, the thesis finds that coastal provinces can adopt an unbalanced development strategy by expanding their relatively uncompetitive sectors. For western provinces, however, what is better for them is to take the balanced development strategy through simultaneous enhancement of every aspect of the competitiveness index. Moreover, a combination of the two strategies would better match the specific circumstances of some particular provinces. Besides that, the results show that reducing provincial disparity in terms of competitiveness would firstly require focusing on narrowing the regional gap. In addition, this thesis attempts to seek a set of benchmark weights for dimensions of provincial competitiveness.
