Avaliaram-se 29 genótipos de trigo provenientes de cruzamentos entre o cultivar IAC 24 e fontes comprovadas de resistência a Puccinia recondita e características específicas para panificação, mais o cultivar IAC 24 (controle), mediante experimentos semeados em diferentes regiões tritícolas paulistas no período 1993-95. Analisaram-se as características seguintes: produtividade de grãos, resistência à ferrugem-da-folha, à tolerância ao alumínio tóxico e às qualidades industriais para pão. Considerando a produtividade, destacou-se, no Vale do Paranapanema, o genótipo no 24 (CM H. 74A-630/SX//CNO79/3/IAC 24); na região de Capão Bonito, o no 26 (Yaco "S"/IAC -24) e, em Mococa, com irrigação por aspersão, o no 23 (CM 6530/IAC-24). A resistência ao agente causal da ferrugem-da-folha foi transferida para os genótipos por meio dos cruzamentos envolvendo Yaco "S" e Agent/6*SKA//AGA/4/TI71. Seis genótipos entre os avaliados revelaram-se muito sensíveis ao Al3+ Os trigos duros apresentaram maior rendimento de extração de farinha, comparados aos moles. Considerando os diferentes parâmetros avaliados para qualidade tecnológica, destacaram-se os genótipos no 16 (IAS58/IAS55//ALD/3/IAC5/4/ALD/IAS58/8.1034.A//ALD/5/CNR/6/BUC"S"/7/IAC24) e no 12 (MRNG/4/NAD/FOR//PCN/3/BLT/MES/5/PAT2195*2/ZP"S"/6/ALD/EMU//CHAT/7/VEE/8/IAC24), com base no estudo da divergência genética por componentes principais.

Electrochemical atomic layer deposition (e-ALD) is an effective method for achieving atomic monolayer-by-monolayer deposition of metals. In this presentation, we will discuss the mechanistic events underlying gold (Au) e-ALD. The e-ALD process involves lead underpotential deposition (PbUPD) followed by spontaneous redox replacement (SLRR) of PbUPD by Au. During Au e-ALD, a unique three-stage mass transient is observed. Using voltammetry, electrochemical quartz crystal microgravimetry (e-QCM), and chronoamperometry, we present an in-depth study of the characteristics of this mass transient during Au e-ALD. Adsorption of Au+3-ligand complex(es) (Au-L) on the Au surface is shown to play a key role in the Au-ALD process. The adsorbed Au-L species are reduced in stage I while a PbUPD adlayer is formed. The SLRR of PbUPD adlayer by nobler Au occurs in stage II, followed by the re-adsorption of the Au-L species in stage III. A quantitative analysis of the deposit mass under different conditions allows estimation of the average molecular weight of the adsorbed Au-L complexes. Ramifications of such adsorption-mediated deposition to thickness uniformity, conformality and film roughness will be discussed. Figure 1

The legume pod borer, Maruca vitrata (Lepidoptera: Crambidae; syn. M. testulalis), is a serious pantropical insect pest of grain legumes. Comparative studies of M. vitrata female sex pheromone components in two different geographic populations in China, Wuhan and Huazhou, confi rmed that (E,E)-10,12-hexadecadienal (E10,E12 - 16:Ald) and (E)-10-hexadecenal (E10 - 16:Ald) were present in variable ratios in all pheromone gland extracts of both populations. (E,E)-10,12-hexadecadienol (E10,E12 - 16:OH) was always detected in minor amounts using polar DB-WAX columns, but was never detected using medium-polar DB-17 columns for the two populations. E10 - 16:OH was not found in any of the M. vitrata sex pheromone gland extracts. The average ratios of E10 - 16:Ald, E10,E12 - 16:Ald, and E10,E12 - 16:OH in the pheromone gland extracts of populations from Wuhan and Huazhou were 79.5:100:12.1 and 10.3:100:0.7, respectively. Electrophysiological testing suggested that E10,E12 - 16:Ald elicited the highest male electroantennography (EAG) response, followed by E10,E12 - 16:OH and E10 - 16:Ald. Field-trapping tests with single synthetic sex pheromone lures showed that E10,E12 - 16:OH alone could not attract males, whereas E10,E12 - 16:Ald or E10 - 16:Ald alone attracted few males. Wuhan and Huazhou males were most attracted by lures containing E10 - 16:Ald + E10,E12 - 16:Ald + E10,E12 - 16:OH in doses of (80 + 100 + 10) μg and (10 + 100 + 10) μg, respectively, per vial. Males could discriminate between the blends that were most attractive to their own geographic population and those that were most attractive to the reference population. Our fi ndings suggest that geographic variation exists in the sex pheromone system of M. vitrata in China. The results are discussed with regard to the mechanisms underlying the sex pheromone variation

AbstractFour compounds were identified from female sex-pheromone gland extracts of Acleris fimbriana Merick, an important pest in northern fruit orchards of China, by gas chromatography, gas chromatography – mass spectrometry, and flight-tunnel and field-trapping tests. These compounds were (E)-11,13-tetradecadienal (E11,13-14:Ald), (E)-11,13-tetradecadien-1-ol (E11,13-14:OH), (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (E11-14:Ac), and (E)-11,13-tetradecadienyl acetate (E11,13-14:Ac). In field-trapping tests, traps baited with E11,13-14:Ald alone produced the highest trap captures of male A. fimbriana, but the other three individual compounds did not capture any mates. Addition of E11,13-14:Ac to E11,13-14:Ald enhanced trap capture, whereas addition of E11-14:Ac had no effect. A ternary blend of E11,13-14:Ald, E11,13-14:Ac, and E11-l4:Ac in a 6:4:1 ratio captured 7.5 times mean males per trap than virgin females. E11,13-14:OH inhibited trap capture when it was added to E11,13-14:Ald or the ternary blend. This pheromone could be used to monitor populations of A. fimbriana and to control this important pest of fruits in China.

ABSTRACT The coenzyme A (CoA)-acylating aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) catalyzes a key reaction in the acetone- and butanol (solvent)-producing clostridia. It reduces acetyl-CoA and butyryl-CoA to the corresponding aldehydes, which are then reduced by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) to form ethanol and 1-butanol. The ALDH ofClostridium beijerinckii NRRL B593 was purified. It had no ADH activity, was NAD(H) specific, and was more active with butyraldehyde than with acetaldehyde. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of the purified ALDH was determined. The open reading frame preceding the ctfA gene (encoding a subunit of the solvent-forming CoA transferase) of C. beijerinckii NRRL B593 was identified as the structural gene (ald) for the ALDH. The ald gene encodes a polypeptide of 468 amino acid residues with a calculated M r of 51,353. The position of the ald gene in C. beijerinckiiNRRL B593 corresponded to that of the aad/adhE gene (encoding an aldehyde-alcohol dehydrogenase) of Clostridium acetobutylicum ATCC 824 and DSM 792. In Southern analyses, a probe derived from the C. acetobutylicum aad/adhE gene did not hybridize to restriction fragments of the genomic DNAs ofC. beijerinckii and two other species of solvent-producing clostridia. In contrast, a probe derived from the C. beijerinckii ald gene hybridized to restriction fragments of the genomic DNA of three solvent-producing species but not to those of C. acetobutylicum, indicating a key difference among the solvent-producing clostridia. The amino acid sequence of the ALDH of C. beijerinckii NRRL B593 was most similar (41% identity) to those of the eutE gene products (CoA-acylating ALDHs) of Salmonella typhimurium andEscherichia coli, whereas it was about 26% identical to the ALDH domain of the aldehyde-alcohol dehydrogenases of C. acetobutylicum, E. coli, Lactococcus lactis, and amitochondriate protozoa. The predicted secondary structure of the C. beijerinckii ALDH suggests the presence of an atypical Rossmann fold for NAD+ binding. A comparison of the proposed catalytic pockets of the CoA-dependent and CoA-independent ALDHs identified 6 amino acids that may contribute to interaction with CoA.

Abstract(E)-11,13-Tetradecadienal (E11,13-14:Ald) is the major component of the sex pheromone of the western blackheaded budworm (WBB), Acleris gloverana Walsingham. The compound was identified in extracts of the female’s pheromone gland by coupled gas chromatographic - electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) and coupled GC - mass spectrometry in selected ion monitoring mode. In field experiments, E11,13-14:Ald by itself was attractive, but addition of (Z)-11,13-tetradecadienal doubled trap catches of male WBB. (E)-11,13-Tetradecadienol or (E)-11,13-tetradecadienyl acetate in binary or ternary combination with E11,13-14:Ald did not enhance attractiveness of the bait. In comparative assessments of five different trap designs, Uni-traps appeared to be the most suitable for use in pheromone-based monitoring of populations of WBB.

Abstract The yellow tortrix, Acleris fimbriana Merick (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is an economically important insect pest on fruit trees with four generations a year in North China. In order to develop a new and effective method for forecasting and controlling the pest, the sex pheromone was studied. We have identified the female sex pheromone as (E)-11,13-tetradecadienal (E11,13-14:Ald), (E)-11,13-tetradecadienyl acetate (E11,13-14:Ac) and (E)-11-tetradecenyl acetate (E11-14:Ac). Trapping effect of synthetic chemicals E11,13-14:Ald, alone and in combination with E11,13-14:Ac or/and E11-14:Ac to A. fimbriana males was tested in Beijing Xishan Orchard (2001). E11,13-14:Ald on its own was much attractive to A. fimbriana males. Neither E11,13-14:Ac nor E11-14:Ac alone caught any moths. The catches markedly increased by adding E11,13-14:Ac to E11,13-14:Ald. The optimum ratio of E11,13- 14:Ald and E11,13-14:Ac was 6:4 to 5:5. This attractiveness was apparently enhanced when 5% to 10% of E11-14:Ac was added. The best field activity was in the lure baited with a 6:4:1 ratio of E11,13-14:Ald, E11,13-14:Ac and E11-14:Ac at a dosage of 1000 μg/septum. The effect of antioxidant, 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol [butylated hydroxyluene (BHT)], to the synthetic pheromone blends on its duration and catching efficacy was also tested. Addition of 5-10% BHT to the synthetic pheromone could prolong the life-span of pheromone chemicals for 6-8 weeks, thereby increased its catching efficacy.

This paper explores the conditions for the electrodeposition of Moad (molybdenum adlayer) on Ag(111) from alkaline aqueous solution. Moreover, the first stages of the growth of MoSe2 are also presented, performing the deposition of Sead on the deposited Moad. The deposition of Moad on Sead/Ag(111) was also explored. MoSe2 is of interest due to its peculiar optoelectronic properties, making it suitable for solar energy conversion and nanoelectronics. In this study, electrodeposition techniques were exploited for the synthesis process as more sustainable alternatives to vacuum based techniques. The electrochemical atomic layer deposition (E-ALD) method emerges as a suitable technique to grow inorganic semiconductor thin films thanks to its fulfillment of the green energy predicament and a strict structural and morphological control, and this approach has gathered the attention of the scientific community. Indeed, E-ALD exploits surface limited reactions (SLRs) to alternate the deposition of chemically different atomic layers constituting a compound semiconductor. Thus, E-ALD is one of the most promising electrodeposition techniques for the growth of thin-film of compound semiconductors under a strict structural and morphological control. On this ground, E-ALD can be considered an ideal technique for the growth of 2D materials.

Este artigo discute como os documentos curriculares da Região Norte do Brasil, pós-BNCC (BRASIL, 2017), abordam a Análise Linguística (AL), a fim de possibilitar reflexões sobre essa prática. Trata-se de estudo documental, sob os pressupostos da Linguística Aplicada, ancorado na perspectiva dialógica de linguagem e no percurso histórico sobre Ensino Gramatical (EG), Prática de Análise Linguística (PAL) e Análise Linguística Dialógica (ALD). Os resultados revelam que os documentos seguem as mesmas evidências de AL, propostas pela BNCC, e que a PAL embasa os textos introdutórios. Contudo, a reorganização curricular expressa perspectivas EG e PAL e poucas de ALD.

Studies in both humans and animal models demonstrated that chronic alcohol/e-cigarette (e-Cig) exposure affects mitochondrial function and impairs barrier function in brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMVECs). Identification of the signaling pathways by which chronic alcohol/e-Cig exposure induces mitochondrial damage in BMVEC is vital for protection of the blood–brain barrier (BBB). To address the issue, we treated human BMVEC [hBMVECs (D3 cell-line)] with ethanol (ETH) [100 mM], acetaldehyde (ALD) [100 μM], or e-cigarette (e-Cig) [35 ng/mL of 1.8% or 0% nicotine] conditioned medium and showed reduced mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) measured by a Seahorse analyzer. Seahorse data were further complemented with the expression of mitochondrial OXPHOS proteins detected by Western blots. We also observed cytosolic escape of ATP and its extracellular release due to the disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential caused by ETH, ALD, or 1.8% e-Cig exposure. Moreover ETH, ALD, or 1.8% e-Cig treatment resulted in elevated purinergic P2X7r and TRPV1 channel gene expression, measured using qPCR. We also demonstrated the protective role of P2X7r antagonist A804598 (10 μM) in restoring mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation levels and preventing extracellular ATP release. In a BBB functional assay using trans-endothelial electrical resistance, we showed that blocking the P2X7r channel enhanced barrier function. In summary, we identified the potential common pathways of mitochondrial injury caused by ETH, ALD, and 1.8% e-Cig which allow new protective interventions. We are further investigating the potential link between P2X7 regulatory pathways and mitochondrial health.

A fim de comparar as abordagens abdominais, pela linha mediana ventral e lateral direita em cadelas pré-púberes e adultas submetidas a ovariossalpingo-histerectomia, utilizaram-se 28 cadelas hígidas, distribuídas em dois grupos experimentais de igual número: grupo abordagem mediana ventral (AMV) e grupo abordagem lateral direita (ALD), com sete animais adultos e sete animais pré-púberes em cada grupo. O procedimento cirúrgico foi dividido em nove manobras cirúrgicas distintas, e o tempo para conclusão de cada uma delas, suas facilidades e dificuldades, assim como o tempo cirúrgico total, foram determinados. O tempo médio desde o início da incisão da pele até a entrada na cavidade peritoneal foi menor nas cadelas adultas (P≤0,001) e pré-púberes (P≤0,001) do grupo AMV, mas o tempo médio para identificação uterina foi menor nas cadelas pré-púberes (P≤0,001) do grupo ALD. O tempo cirúrgico total foi menor utilizando-se a abordagem lateral direita (grupo ALD) nas cadelas adultas (P≤0,001) e pré-púberes (P≤0,001). Seu uso não se relacionou com complicações cirúrgicas e facilitou a identificação uterina, possibilitando redução no tempo cirúrgico total. Assim, a abordagem lateral direita demonstrou ser uma alternativa segura em cadelas adultas e pré-púberes submetidas à OSH eletiva.

Foram avaliadas as características quantitativas da carcaça de novilhos Red Angus com idade média inicial de 8 meses e 189 kg, confinados durante 114, 144, 173 e 213 dias até os respectivos pesos de abate (PA) de 340, 370, 400 ou 430 kg, com idade de 12, 13, 14 e 15 meses. A dieta alimentar continha uma relação volumoso:concentrado de 56:44, contendo 13,13% de proteína bruta e 2,7 Mcal de energia digestível/kg MS. O corte serrote, embora tenha aumentado linearmente em peso (91,73; 103,26; 106,20 e 116,66 kg) frente ao aumento do peso de abate, decresceu linearmente quando expresso em relação ao peso de carcaça fria (50,55; 50,79; 50,16; e 48,86%). A porcentagem do corte costilhar foi a que sofreu maior incremento (23,36; 25,40; 28,50; e 35%) com o aumento do peso de abate, acompanhando o aumento na deposição de gordura de cobertura (3,91; 6,16; 6,16; e 9,58 mm). A área do músculo Longissimus dorsi (ALD) aumentou linearmente frente ao aumento do peso de abate (ALD = 27,48 + 0,083PA), enquanto a ALD/100 kg de carcaça fria decresceu linearmente (ALD/100 kg carcaça = 45,14 - 0,0425PA). Foi estimado, por intermédio da equação de regressão, que a espessura de gordura mínima exigida pelos frigoríficos (3 mm) teria sido alcançada com 327 kg de peso. Considerando o peso de carcaça mínimo de 180 kg, este seria atingido com um peso de abate de 337 kg. Utilizando novilhos da raça Red Angus para produção do superprecoce, o peso de abate não deve ser superior a 400 kg, para não exceder os 6 mm de gordura de cobertura, evitando o recorte do excesso.

Avaliaram-se 18 linhagens diaplóides de trigo, obtidas via cultura de anteras in vitro oriundas de híbridos F1, e dois cultivares IAC-24 e IAC-289, nos anos de 1999 e 2000, em dois locais do Estado de São Paulo: Capão Bonito (solo ácido, sem aplicação de calcário e em condição de sequeiro) e em Tatuí (solo ácido, com aplicação de calcário e em condição de irrigação por aspersão). Em cada experimento avaliaram-se a produção de grãos e a altura das plantas. Foi, também, avaliada a tolerância à toxicidade de alumínio, empregando-se soluções nutritivas contendo 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 e 10 mg.L-1, em condição de laboratório. As linhagens diaplóides consideradas mostraram grande variabilidade para os caracteres agronômicos avaliados. Destacaram-se quanto à produção de grãos, considerando a média dos experimentos de Capão Bonito, as linhagens 9 (MRL"S"/BUC"S"//BUC"S"/3/ IAC-24), 4 (PF70402/ALD"S"//PAT72160/ALD"S" /3/PEW"S"/4/OPATA/5/IAC-60) e 3 (TEPOCA/IAC-24). Em Tatuí, considerando-se a média dos dois anos, destacaram-se quanto à produção de grãos as linhagens 4 e 5, oriundas do mesmo cruzamento. A linhagem 13 (JUN/GEN//IAC-24) apresentou as plantas mais baixas nos quatro experimentos. Todos os genótipos, com exceção da cultivar IAC-289 e da linhagem 13, foram considerados tolerantes a 10 mg.L-1 de Al3+, quando avaliados em soluções nutritivas. Os resultados reforçam a possibilidade de selecionar os genótipos tolerantes ao alumínio, em condição de laboratório, antes que sejam avaliados em campo, em solo ácido, tornando o processo de obtenção de linhagens tolerantes mais eficiente.

AbstractRaspberry crown borer, Pennisetia marginata (Harris) (Lepidoptera: Sesiidae), is a native North American species and pest of many cane fruits. Using coupled gas chromatographic–electroantennographic detection analyses (GC-EAD) we identified candidate sex pheromone components in pheromone gland extracts and effluvia from calling females. Analysis of gland extracts on a Zebron-5 column revealed four components (A, B, C, and D) that elicited strong responses from male antennae. The two most EAD-active components A and B were hypothesised to be (3E,13Z)-octadecadienal [(3E,13Z)-18:Ald] and (3E,13Z)-octadecadienol [(3E,13Z)-18:OH], respectively. Their retention times on other GC columns matched those of authentic standards, thus supporting structural assignments. Synthetic (3E,13Z)-18:Ald, and its GC rearrangement product (2E,13Z)-octadecadienal [(2E,13Z)-18:Ald; component C], also induced antennal responses in GC-EAD analyses of female effluvia. Compounds D in pheromone gland extract, and E and F in female effluvia, elicited EAD responses but could not be identified. In field trapping experiments, (3E,13Z)-18:Ald was the only component that attracted male P. marginata when tested alone. Attractiveness of (3E,13Z)-18:Ald was reduced when combined in binary or ternary blends with any of the other identified components, suggesting one or all may act as pheromone antagonists. In Aldergrove, British Columbia, Canada, peak diel attraction of male P. marginata to (3E,13Z)-18:Ald occurred between 16:00 and 18:00 hours Pacific Daylight Time, at temperatures of 21–23°C, on 30 August 2010, 3 September 2010, and 13 September 2010. We conclude that (3E,13Z)-18:Ald is the major pheromone component of P. marginata.

Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) alters gut microbiota and tight junctions, causing bacterial components to enter the portal vein and induce oxidative stress-induced inflammation in the liver. Only corticosteroids and liver transplants are treatment options for severe alcoholic hepatitis. ALD’s pathophysiology is unknown. However, acetaldehyde’s toxic effects cause oxidative stress and intestinal permeability. This study investigates the influence of a synbiotic (a combination of aged garlic extract (AGE) and Lactobacillus rhamnosus MTCC1423) on colonic oxidative stress and inflammation in ALD male Wistar rats and Caco2 cells. MDA measurement by HPLC in CaCo2 cells, blood serum, and colon tissue demonstrated that synbiotic treatment in the ALD model reduces oxidative stress. Further, fecal high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed the microbiome’s shift towards Firmicutes in the synbiotic group compared to ethanol. In addition, DCFDA labeling and H/E staining demonstrate that the synbiotic is beneficial in inhibiting the development of ALD. In the colon, the synbiotic reduces the activation of CYP2E1 and the inflammatory markers TNF-a and IL-6 while elevating the mRNA expression of ZO-1, occludin, and IL-10. Synbiotics colonize Lactobacillus to restore barrier function and microbiota and reduce colon oxidative stress. Thus, a synbiotic combination can be used in ALD treatment.

Com o objetivo de analisar as publicações relacionadas ao ensino de Genética e Biologia Molecular no Ensino Médio brasileiro, foram consideradas reflexões sobre várias publicações científicas mediante revisão bibliográfica. Foram analisados trabalhos publicados entre 1999 a 2008. A Revista Genética na Escola se destacou quanto à quantidade de artigos publicados. As publicações puderam ser classificadas em diversas categorias, como: análise de livro didático (ALD), histórico (HIS), intrainterdisciplinaridade (IID), metodologia de ensino (MEE), propostas curriculares (PRC) e outros (OUT). Embora compatíveis em quantidade, artigos das categorias ALD, HIS e PRC encontram-se publicados em pouquíssima quantidade. O número de artigos publicados nas categorias IID e MEE soma quase 73% das publicações encontradas, em relação às demais (as outras categorias juntas somam aproximadamente 27%). Este estudo possibilitou considerar que ainda é incipiente a pesquisa voltada ao ensino de Genética e Biologia Molecular, com relação ao Ensino Médio na escola básica brasileira.

The Electrochemical Atomic Layer Deposition (E-ALD) technique is used for the deposition of ultrathin films of bismuth (Bi) compounds. Exploiting the E-ALD, it was possible to obtain highly controlled nanostructured depositions as needed, for the application of these materials for novel electronics (topological insulators), thermoelectrics and opto-electronics applications. Electrochemical studies have been conducted to determine the Underpotential Deposition (UPD) of Bi on selenium (Se) to obtain the Bi2Se3 compound on the Ag (111) electrode. Verifying the composition with X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) showed that, after the first monolayer, the deposition of Se stopped. Thicker deposits were synthesized exploiting a time-controlled deposition of massive Se. We then investigated the optimal conditions to deposit a single monolayer of metallic Bi directly on the Ag.

In order to contribute to the exploitation and utilization of spent mushroom substrates (SMS) of Laetiporus sulphureus, hot-water-extractable polysaccharides (H-SMPS) and enzymatic-extractable polysaccharides (E-SMPS) were successfully isolated from SMS of L. sulphureus. Both H-SMPS and E-SMPS were found to have high reducing power and potential scavenging activities against hydroxyl, DPPH, and superoxide anion radicals. In vivo assays showed that the administration of H-SMPS and E-SMPS has potential hepatoprotective effects against alcohol-induced alcoholic liver disease (ALD), possibly brought about by improving liver function, increasing antioxidant status, and reducing lipid peroxidation. Furthermore, monosaccharide composition analysis showed that fucose may play a vital role in guaranteeing stronger hepatoprotection. These results may provide references for the exploitation of the SMS of L. sulphureus as a source of H-SMPS and E-SMPS, which in turn can be used as functional foods or natural drugs for the prevention of ALD and other liver diseases.

In batteries, like all electrochemical systems, interfacial phenomena play a critical role in thermodynamic stability, charge transfer kinetics, and ionic transport phenomena. For example, in Li-ion batteries, the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer enables stabilization of liquid electrolytes against continual electrolyte decomposition. In solid-state batteries, the dynamic morphological evolution of the interface results in unique electro-chemo-mechanical properties, which dictate performance, degradation, and ultimate failure. As a result of these coupled phenomena, there is a continued need to improve both our fundamental understanding of interfacial dynamics, as well as new strategies to engineer rationally-controlled interfaces. Among the various interfacial engineering methodologies, atomic layer deposition (ALD) has risen in interest in recent years, owing to its unparalleled ability to impart atomically-precise control of surface composition and structure, while maintaining conformal coating of ultra-high aspect ratio structures. In this talk, I will describe recent progress in applying ALD for battery applications. In the field of Li-ion batteries, I will show how deposition of a single-ion conducting solid electrolyte on the surface of graphite anodes can eliminate electrolyte decomposition and SEI formation, resulting in a four-fold decrease in interfacial resistance [1]. This results in lower cell polarization during fast charging, eliminating deleterious Li plating on the anode. In the field of Li metal batteries, I will also show how ALD coatings can influence nucleation and growth, resulting in improved Coulombic efficiency [2]. The present paper pertains to mechanical properties and structure of nanocrystalline multiferroic BeFiO3(BFO) thin films, grown by atomic layer deposition (ALD) on the Si/SiO2/Pt substrate. The usage of sharp-tip-nanoindentation and multiple techniques of structure examination, namely, grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, enabled us to detect changes in elastic properties(95 GPa≤E≤118 GPa)and hardness(4.50 GPa≤H≤7.96 GPa)of BFO after stages of annealing and observe their relation to the material’s structural evolution. Our experiments point towards an increase in structural homogeneity of the samples annealed for a longer time. To our best knowledge, the present report constitutes the first disclosure of nanoindentation mechanical characteristics of ALD-fabricated BeFiO3, providing a new insight into the phenomena that accompany structure formation and development of nanocrystalline multiferroics. We believe that our systematic characterization of the BFO layers carried out at consecutive stages of their deposition provides pertinent information which is needed to control and optimize its ALD fabrication.

Estudou-se o comportamento de17 novos genótipos de trigo (Triticum aestivum L.) tendo como testemunha as cultivares IAC 370, IAC 289 e IAC 350 em experimentos semeados em dois sistemas de cultivo, sequeiro: Capão Bonito e Itapeva, e com irrigação por aspersão: Paranapanema, Ribeirão Preto e Mococa, no período de 2001 a 2002, no Estado de São Paulo. Avaliaram-se os rendimentos de grãos de cada genótipo em relação às diferentes condições de cultivo, tolerância ao alumínio com o emprego de soluções nutritivas, reação às principais doenças fúngicas e a qualidade tecnológica da farinha. Destacaram-se, na média geral, quanto ao rendimento de grãos os genótipos ALD/CEP76630//CEP73234/PF7219/3/BUC"S"/BYJ"S" e MARNG/BUC"S"//BLO"S" /PSN"S"/3/BUC/PVN"S", em cultivo de sequeiro e com irrigação por aspersão, respectivamente. Os genótipos CNO79/PRL"S'//IAC 227 e RAC 646/BH 1146 foram tão tolerantes à toxicidade de Al3+ quanto a cultivar tolerante BH 1146. A incidência da ferrugem-da-folha não foi constatada nos genótipos CHAT"S"/CEP7780//PRL"S"/ BOW"S'", SABUF, WG 3070/2*WEAVER e ALDAN"S"/IAS 58//IAC 60 que foram imunes à doença, no biênio em estudo, em ambos os sistemas de cultivo. Todos os genótipos foram suscetíveis aos agentes causais das manchas foliares. A qualidade tecnológica das amostras de farinhas procedentes de Capão Bonito, Região Sudoeste, foram superiores às obtidas em Ribeirão Preto, Região Central do Estado São Paulo.

The study was to determine the presence of Classical Swine Fever virus (CSFv), in the meat of vaccinated pigs with the PAV-250 strain and then challenged using the same strain. Five treatment groups were established (each with four pigs). Group A: Pigs thatwere fed with processed hams from negative animals; Group B: Pigs that were fed with processed hams from commercial pigs inoculated with the ALD (reference strain) (titre of 104.0/ml); Group C: Pigs fed with processed hams from pigs infected with the virulent ALD strain (titre of 102.5/ml); Group D: Pigs fed with processed hams from pigs vaccinated with the PAV-250 strain and challenged with the ALD strain (titre of 101.1/ml); and Group E: Pigs fed with processed hams from pigs vaccinated with two doses of the PAV-250 strain and challenged with the ALD strain (negative). Blood samples were taken at d 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20 for biometric analysis. Groups B, C and D manifested clinical signs of CSFv: 40 °C temperature, anorexia, paralysis, vomiting, diarrhea, tremor, hirsute hair and cyanosis. Pigs were slaughtered and necropsies performed to identify lesions in tissues. Results of direct immunofluorescence testing of tissues were positive and the virus was recovered. Under these study conditions, it was found that CSFv resisted the cooking method at 68 °C for 40 min in hams from unvaccinated pigs, and that the virus was able to transmit the disease to healthy unvaccinated pigs, whereas the hams from the vaccinated animals did not transmit the virus.

Serum response element 1 has previously been reported to be necessary and sufficient for activation of the skeletal α-actin promoter during hypertrophy of the anterior latissimus dorsi (ALD) muscle of roosters [J. A. Carson, R. J. Schwartz, and F. W. Booth. Am. J. Physiol. 270 ( Cell Physiol. 39): C1624–C1633, 1996]. Serum response factor (SRF) protein is the transcription factor that binds as a homodimer to serum response element 1 and activates the skeletal α-actin promoter. An increased expression of exogenous SRF protein in replicating C2C12myoblasts induced a three- to fourfold activation of the skeletal α-actin promoter (L. Wei, W. Zhou, J. D. Croissant, F.-E. Johansen, R. Prywes, A. Balasubramamyan, and R. J. Schwartz. J. Biol. Chem. 273: 30287–30294, 1998). Thus we hypothesized that SRF protein concentration would be increased during hypertrophy of skeletal muscle. In the present study, 10% of the rooster’s body weight was attached to the left wing to induce enlargement of the ALD muscle compared with the contralateral muscle. With Western analysis, a significant increase in SRF protein per gram of wet weight of the ALD muscle was noted at 7 and 13 days of hypertrophy. Furthermore, the increase in SRF protein occurred in both crude nuclear protein and cytoplasmic fractions in 7-day stretched ALD muscles. This is the first report showing increased protein concentration for a transcription factor whose regulatory element in the skeletal α-actin promoter has previously been shown to be required for the transduction of a hypertrophy signal in overloaded skeletal muscle of an animal.

Os autores descrevem um caso de adrenoleucodistrofia (ALD) em um paciente do sexo masculino, com 8 anos de idade, cuja genitora no primeiro trimestre da gravidez tomou miscelânea de drogas com fins abortivos. O curso da doença foi progressivo inician-do-se por distúrbios auditivos, visuais e mentais, seguindo-se alterações neurovegetativas, motoras, convulsivas e postura fetal. No estágio final o paciente tornou-se amaurótico, surdo, quadriplégieo e demente. O óbito ocorreu por infecção respiratória. O diagnóstico foi confirmado pelo estudos do LCR, eletrofisiológicos, radiológicos e pelos achados de necropsia (cérebro e glândulas adrenais).

ZnO/n-Si and ZnO/p-Si heterostructures were prepared by Atomic layer deposition (ALD) and the electronic properties have been investigated by Current-Voltage (I-V), Capacitance-Voltage (C-V) and Deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) measurements. DLTS measurements show two dominants electron traps at the interface of the ZnO/n-Si junction with energy position at 0.07 eV and 0.15 eV below the conduction band edge, labelled E(0.07) and E(0.15), respectively, and no electrically active defects at the interface of the ZnO/p-Si junction. E(0.07) is reduced by annealing up to 400°C while E(0.15) is created at 500°C. The best heterostructure is found after heat treatment at 400°C with a substantial improvement of the current rectification for ZnO/n-Si and the formation of Ohmic contact on ZnO/p-Si. A reduction of the interface defects correlates with an improvement of the crystal structure of the ZnO film with a preferred orientation along the c-axis.

Background: There is a significant worldwide burden of Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD). Both alcohol abuse and infection with hepatitis viruses can lead to liver disease. Alcohol and hepatitis viruses have synergistic effects in the development of liver disease. Thus, early detection of virus hepatitis and targeted interventions can improve prognosis in ALD.Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 180 patients coming to Baroda medical college and SSG hospital, Vadodara having alcoholic liver disease were studied and evaluated for markes of viral hepatitis and its clinical and biochemical profile in alcoholic liver disease.Results: our study we had taken 180 patients of alcoholic liver disease out of which male were 92% and female were 8%. Prevalence of viral hepatitis was 27.7% in ALD patients. Out of which hepatitis E was 13% followed by hepatitis A 11%, hepatitis B 4.44% and least was Hepatitis C 0.5%. In clinical profile fever was significantly higher in patients of viral hepatitis with ALD than patients without viral hepatitis. Bilirubin was not significant differ in both groups of patients but SGOT and SGPT had higher values in patients of viral hepatitis with ALD and thus ratio of SGOT/SGPT was also affected due to higher value of SGOT and SGPT.Conclusions: Alcohol consumption and hepatitis virus infection have a synergic hepatotoxic effect, and the coexistence of these factors increases the risk of advanced liver disease. Patients starting treatment for chronic viral hepatitis infection should be specifically advised to stop or reduce alcohol consumption because of its potential impact on treatment efficacy and adherence and may benefit from additional support during antiviral therapy specially in chronic hepatitis.

Introdução: As doenças hepáticas causam alterações metabólicas, diminuição de massa e função muscular que prejudicam a funcionalidade e a qualidade de vida (QV). Objetivo: Comparar capacidade funcional, força muscular respiratória e QV de candidatos a transplante de fígado segundo etiologia da doença. Método: Estudo transversal com cirróticos em protocolo para transplante. Foram analisados a capacidade funcional pelo teste de caminhada de seis minutos (TC6), a QV pelo questionário Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire (CLDQ) e a força muscular respiratória pela manovacuometria para obtenção da pressão inspiratória máxima (PImáx) e pressão expiratória máxima (PEmáx). Os pacientes foram divididos em cinco grupos: cirrose por vírus B (VHB), vírus C (VHC), esteato-hepatite não alcoólica (NASH), álcool (ALD) e outros tipos de cirroses (OTC). Resultados: A comparação da distância do TC6 demonstrou que os pacientes do grupo NASH obtiveram distância predita significativamente maior (p=0,02) que o grupo OTC. Não houve diferença significativa (p>0,05) para força muscular respiratória entre os grupos. Na QV o grupo ALD apresentou escore significativamente menor (p=0,03) que o grupo VHB no domínio sintomas sistêmicos. Conclusão: Candidatos a transplante de fígado de etiologia NASH demonstraram pior capacidade funcional que os pacientes de outras etiologias de cirrose e os com cirrose por álcool demonstraram pior QV relacionada aos sintomas sistêmicos na comparação com os pacientes com cirrose por vírus B. Estes achados demonstram que esses pacientes podem apresentar pior prognóstico pós-transplante devido os comprometimentos prévios apresentados.Palavras Chave: Qualidade de vida, Músculos respiratórios, Transplante de fígado, Cirrose hepática, Teste de esforçoABSTRACTIntroduction: Liver diseases cause metabolic changes, decreased muscle mass and function that impair functionality and quality of life (QOL). Objective: To compare functional capacity, respiratory muscle strength and QoL of liver transplant candidates according to the disease etiology. Methods: Cross-sectional study with cirrhotics in a transplant protocol. The following were analyzed: functional capacity by the six-minute walk test (6MWT), QOL by the Chronic Liver Disease Questionnaire (CLDQ) and respiratory muscle strength by manovacuometry to obtain the maximum inspiratory pressure (PImax) and maximum expiratory pressure (MEP). The patients were divided into five groups: cirrhosis by virus B (HBV), virus C (HCV), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), alcohol (ALD) and other types of cirrhosis (OTC). Results: The comparison of the 6MWT distance showed that patients in the NASH group had a significantly greater predicted distance (p=0.02) than the OTC group. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) for respiratory muscle strength between groups. In QOL, the ALD group had a significantly lower score (p=0.03) than the HBV group in the systemic symptoms domain. Conclusion: Liver transplant candidates of NASH etiology showed worse functional capacity than patients of other cirrhosis etiologies and patients with alcohol cirrhosis demonstrated worse QOL related to systemic symptoms in comparison with patients with cirrhosis by virus B. These findings demonstrate that these patients may have a worse post-transplant prognosis due to previous impairments.Keywords: Quality of life, Respiratory muscles, Liver transplantation, Liver cirrhosis, Exercise test

Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) is sequential and conformal process that provides precise thickness control due to its self-limiting nature even in high aspect ratio structures. The exponential growth in the use of ALD is due the availability of hundreds of precursor chemistries for diverse technological applications beyond just semiconductors and microelectronics. However, one of recurring challenges is the problem of results disparity, and errors that underline the causes of disparity, primarily may be due to lack of consistency in process optimization and reproducibility. In this research, a Design of Experiment (DoE) approach is adopted for parametric optimization for synthesis of Al2O3 thin films using ALD. The objective of this work is to adopt DoE for reproducible ALD synthesis processes within statistical reliability. Briefly, the precursors used for Al2O3 ALD (Ultratech Veeco Thermal ALD) were Trimethylaluminum (TMA) and H2O with Ozone. The effect of four parameters, namely pulse duration of TMA and water, number of cycles, and temperature were evaluated for the response parameter of Al2O3 thickness on Si with 300 nm of SiO2. E-Chip DoE software was chosen for data modeling. E-Chip considers multivariate analysis to provide the parametric relationship for Analysis of Variances (ANOVA) and predictive surface response analysis, thus eliminating the need for extensive process optimization experiments that are required for full factorial design. Initially, screening experiments were conducted to determine the levels of input parameters. The pulse duration for TMA and H2O were 0.01-0.02 sec, the number of cycles were varied between 50 and 100, the temperature range was 100-200 0C. For each sample, five thickness and roughness readings were measured on an ex-situ ellipsometer and Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). The stoichiometry of Al2O3 thin films were evaluated using XPS. The data analysis reveals that the influential parameters are number of cycles, pulse duration, and temperature in the order of their significance. The direct relationship between number of cycles and Al2O3 thickness infers that flux available is effectively used for layer growth. The consistency of layer thickness is related not just to the conformality but also to the adsorption of reactive species effectively. Uneven pulse duration also contributes to the linear growth of layer thickness, which supports the effectiveness of reactive species saturation and purging of un-reactive elements. The temperature variation was also an influential parameter as it affected the vapor pressure for TMA and H2O. This mechanistic model based on DoE is a suitable tool to predict the ALD’s growth per cycle, which can further help in understanding of any chemisorption with substrate treatment or variation in film roughness characteristics. Study of other DoE parameters such as type of substrate, substrate functionalization, reactor size in relation to the size of substrate, and purge duration are ongoing. Figure 1 describes the ANOVA chart estimates and surface response graphs, which identifies the bounded parametric region along with the ability to predict the influence of change in parameters based on developed mechanistic model. Blackberry is widely used in diets for its rich biological phytochemicals and health benefits. However, the relationship between the effect of blackberry extract (BBE) on ameliorating alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and the PXR-Cytochrome P450s axis in vivo and in vitro is unknown. In this study, 50% and 30% ethanol by gavage were used to establish acute and subacute ALD. Male mice were intragastrically administered BBE with 25, 50, and 100 mg/kg BW in the treatment groups. In the experiment, samples were collected, and related indices and histopathological observation were measured. In addition, the potential mechanism was predicted by network and docking studies, which were verified by qRT-PCR analysis, the detection of apoptosis, the measurement of mitochondrial membrane potential, the detection of ROS levels, and Western blotting in liver tissues and HepG2 cells. The acute and subacute ALD experiments indicated BBE ameliorated liver indices, AST, ALT, SOD, and MDA in serum, and the histopathology changed, as observed via H&E, Sirius red, and oil red O staining. The potential mechanism was predicted by network and docking studies, which were verified by experiments. Western blotting suggested BBE reduced the protein expression of NF-κB, TGF-β, IL-6, and α-SMA, and enhanced PXR and CAR in livers. In addition, qRT-PCR showed BBE significantly elevated the mRNA levels of PXR, CAR, CYP3A25, CYP3A11, and CYP2B10. In the experiment of the ethanol-induced apoptosis of HepG2 cells, BBE reduced the apoptosis of HepG2 cells by boosting mitochondrial membrane potential, reducing the apoptotic rate and ROS content, lessening the expression of Bax, and inducing the expression of PXR. For the first time, this study demonstrated BBE’s preventive effects on ALD, which are associated with the antioxidation and stimulation of the PXR-Cytochrome P450s axis. In addition, BBE is available as a nutritional agent.

We have proposed and demonstrated a novel thin film deposition technique by transferring the principles of atomic layer deposition (ALD), known with gaseous precursors, towards precursors dissolved in a liquid. The technique can also be considered as a generalization of already established methods such as the ‘layer by layer’ growth or the ‘successive ion layer adsorption and reaction’ (SILAR). 'Solution ALD' (sALD) shares the fundamental properties of standard ‘gas ALD’ (gALD), specially the self-limiting growth and the ability to coat conformally deep pores. It has been already shown that it is possible to transfer standard reactions from gALD to sALD such as TiO2 deposition . However, sALD also offers novel opportunities such as overcoming the need for volatile and thermally robust precursors. To illustrate this, we establish sALD procedures for depositing films of non oxides layers such as Pb-compound deposition, MOF, selenides and sulfides. Those examples highlight how ionic, polar, or high-molecular weight precursors that only exist in the condensed phase are now rendered amenable to being utilized in surface-controlled thin film formation by sALD for depositing materials that would otherwise be more difficult or more expensive to achieve by gALD or hazardous. The deposition was achieved on small (2 cm*1 cm) and large samples (up to 10 cm*10 cm). The ALD behavior has been shown. The influence of the deposition parameters on the morphology, the crystalline structure and the chemical composition has been investigated by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, grazing incidence x-ray diffraction and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Additionally, the nucleation is studied in function of chemical pretreatment to control the growth and allow selective deposition of SnS, SnSe and Sb2Se3. AbstractUsing gas chromatography and gas chromatography – mass spectrometry analyses of sex pheromone gland volatiles, we identified E- and Z-11-tetradecenals (E:Z-11-14:Aid) in an 85:15 blend of E:Z as the primary sex pheromone components of Croesia semipurpurana (Kearfott). Similar chemical analyses of sex pheromone gland extracts indicated the presence of the congeneric acetates (85:15 E:Z-11-14:Ac) and their saturated analogue (14:Ac); in addition, 85:15 E:Z-11-14:Alds were present at 5% of the acetates. The E:Z-11-14:Alds alone elicited trap capture; admixtures of saturated and unsaturated acetate analogues exhibited no significant synergistic or inhibitory effects. PVC rods with an 85:15 E:Z-11-14:Ald blend is recommended as a trap bait for monitoring population trends. It is unknown whether or not the components identified here represent the complete pheromone blend of this species; data from traps suspended 1.5 m above the ground versus those suspended 10 m above the ground suggest that future field studies may need to be conducted with traps positioned in the tree canopy.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência da técnica de confusão sexual, com o feromônio sexual sintético composto (Z)-11-hexadecenal (Z11-16: Ald) a 1,8% e (Z)-13-octadecenal (Z13-18: Ald) a 1,8%, no controle da população de traça-dos-cachos, Cryptoblabes gnidiella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), em cultivares de videiras (Vitis vinifera) destinadas à produção de vinhos. Os experimentos foram realizados em duas localidades na região do Vale do São Francisco, em áreas comerciais de produção de uva para processamento, com as cultivares Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Tempranillo e Chenin Blanc. Os tratamentos avaliados foram os seguintes: confusão sexual com uso de liberadores Splat ("specialized pheromone and lure application technology"), aplicados com pistola manual a 500 pontos por hectare (2 g por ponto); e testemunha sem aplicação. O efeito da técnica sobre os adultos de C. gnidiella foi avaliado com uso de armadilha tipo Delta, iscada em um septo com 2 g de feromônio sintético da mesma formulação. Os danos nos cachos foram avaliados à colheita. O uso da técnica de confusão sexual reduziu a captura de adultos de C. gnidiella em mais de 59% na 'Tempranillo', 68% na 'Chenin Blanc', 80% na 'Cabernet Sauvignon' e 97% na 'Petit Verdot'. À época da colheita, os danos nos frutos foram reduzidos de 65 a 100% nas áreas tratadas.
