Résumé :
The long-term (for the period 2000-2020) series of pollutant content in the water of the river Northern Dvina and its tributaries are analyzed. The spatio-temporal change in the average age and average seasonal concentrations of especially high concentrations that affect water quality, formed as a result of monitoring natural and anthropogenic factors is shown. The interannual and intraannual variability of the content of organic substances (according to COD and BOD5), compounds of iron, copper, zinc, and lignosulfonates in the water of the rivers of the Northern Dvina basin was studied. The influence of anthropogenic factors on the water quality of the right and left tributaries of the upper reaches of the Northern Dvina River - Sukhona, Pelshma, Vychegda. The change in water quality for the period 2010-2020 was assessed throughout the river Northern Dvina, Sukhona, Pelshma, Vychegda, the water quality of which is most affected by wastewater from timber industry enterprises, hydromechanized works in the channel part of the Northern Dvina and its tributaries; agricultural activities of enterprises of the agro-industrial complex, as well as bilge waters of river transport.

Since the 1960s, more than 250 radiocarbon dates have been obtained for materials in the Upper Western Dvina area, which cover a timeframe from the 7th to the 1st millennium BC. Radiocarbon dates for materials of the Dnepr-Dvina area date the appearance and decline of various cultural traditions – from the formation of the most ancient pottery among hunter-gatherer communities until the appearance of the first stock-breeders in the forest zone, the bearers of cultural traditions of the Corded Ware culture. Dates for materials from the Upper Dvina area show both the existence of hiatuses between some cultural-chronological groups coinciding with some significant climatic and environmental changes, and the quasi (?) co-existence of some of the groups. Could these hiatuses also be traced in material culture, or do they appear because of a lack of data?

Résumé :
The article discusses the first stages in the formation of an ethnopolitical community on the territory of the Belarusian Dvina, known from the annals as «Polochane». Using basic principles developed by the Vienna School of Historical Ethnography, the author identifies significant socio-political changes in the early medieval (9th–10th centuries) history of Eastern Europe due to the emergence of new elites. The formation of stable ethnopolitical communities is associated with the emergence of these elite groups . The absence of particular artifacts of northern European origin in Polotsk and the Polotsk okrug in the 9th – the first half of the 10th century suggests the independent formation of this center on the basis of local social structures. Significant socio-political changes in Eastern Europe arose during the Viking era (9th–10th centuries), and penetration of the North European military-trade groups into the territory of the Middle Dvina was associated with the beginnings of the active functioning of the West-Dvina branch of the Baltic-Black Sea route (the trade route «from the Varangians to the Greeks»). The development of this route became the main reason why Scandinavian leader Rogvolod came to the Polotsk region and formed a territorial and political organization, conditionally referred to as the «Rogvolod Polity». After the middle to the second half of the 10th century, a social transformation took place on the territory of the Middle Dvina, associated with the formation of elite military-trade groups and the formation of a brigade culture. The Rogvolod Polity, as the first stable territorial and political organization in the Dvina basin, created the institutional foundations for the subsequent consolidating ideology (the «core of tradition» according to R. Wenskus), embodied in the 11th century Polotsk princes Rogvolodovichi in the formation of the ethno-political community «Polochane».

Résumé :
The Northern Dvina River flowing into the White Sea may be one of the main sources of microplastic (MP) pollution in the Arctic region. The coastal sediments of the Northern Dvina River act as an intermediate link in the transport of microplastics to the areas of the White and Barents Seas. The µFT-IR and Py-GC/MS methods were used to determine that up to 200 particles or 120 mg of MP per kg could accumulate in the coastal sediments of the Northern Dvina River. Coastal sediments tend to accumulate ABS and PS plastic particles with a particle size of around 200 µm. The accumulated microplastics (218 particles or 117 mg per kg of sediment per year) are carried away by strong currents, especially during spring flooding, resulting in pollution of the Barents and White Seas. The obtained data play an important role in assessing the MP pollution of the Arctic region, especially the White and Barents Seas.

Résumé :
The article is devoted to the issue of protecting personal honor and dignity during the period of validity of the Dvina Charter (13971398). The text of the Charter explains that insult of nobility, which means a dismissive (negative) assessment of a person and personal behavior in relation to someone class affiliation made in verbal form or by certain actions, is under the criminal-legal prohibition. The purpose of the work is to show the essential features of corpus delicti in the field of insult of nobility containing in the Dvina Charter. This corpus is an important lever of criminal-legal protection of honor and dignity, with considering representation on acceptable form of negative assessment of a person, depending on his class affiliation. This theme is relevant due to the fact that honor and dignity are the values of human society and are inherent in man throughout the history of his existence. And it is appropriate to recall that the society in which we live is characterized by a deep moral crisis, in which these values seem to be pushed into the background, and the protection of these enduring values, based on the principles of humanism and the saving of criminal repression, is transferred to the plane of administrative offenses. It is possible to confirm the correctness of the approach, chosen by the legislator, comparing historical facts. So we consider the task of researching the theme on the criminal-legal protection of personal honor and dignity in the Dvina Charter is scientifically relevant.

Résumé :
Transboundary rivers are the connecting threads of different states. Hydrological monitoring and water quality control may vary significantly in different countries and leads to difficulties in solving various water management tasks. Trans-border areas require the resolution of a number of special issues, often in the field of interstate relations. This article presents the results of the analysis of hydrological processes monitoring organization in transboundary river basins of Russia and Eastern Europe. The assessment of typical monitoring problems on the example of the Western Dvina river basin under the circumstances of changing population of the territory and legislative framework governing water management is given. From the analysis of the official information sources and field observations, the structure of hydrological observations in the Western Dvina basin in Russia, Belarus and countries of the European Union is compared with their changes over time. Information on the number and density of the monitoring network stations is given, existing standards and documents regulating the procedure of observations, the composition of the measured parameters, the quality of measurements and the availability of monitoring data are compared. The analysis of methods of network observations of suspended sediments in the Western Dvina basin was carried out. The uncertainty of measurements of the concentration of suspended sediments at the outlet in the Russian part of the Western Dvina basin, caused by the existing methods and, thus, typical for determining this parameter on the observation network in the Russian Federation, is revealed. It is shown that differences and uncertainties in the collection and processing of hydrological information in different countries are a key difficulty in organizing monitoring, both at the international and at the state level.

Résumé :
This thesis investigates the long-term changes and shorter-term variability in monthly, seasonal, and arL'1ual discharge between 1882 and 2004 of two rivers, the Severnaya Dvina (SD) and the Sukhona (SU), draining north-western Russia, and links these changes to climatic variability. The Severnaya Dvina is one of the largest rivers of the lUetic Ocean basin and changes in its discharge can potentially affect the Thermohaline Circulation. The SU is a tributary to SD and results have been used to corroborate findings obtained for SD. It has been suggested by previous studies that discharge of the rivers draining the Eurasian sector of the Arctic basin has significantly increased. However, these studies started during one afthe warmest and driest periods on record in the 930s. Analysis of the discharge records of the SD and the SU has shown that that there has been no long-term, linear change in discharge. Strong interdecadal variability characterises both records and a number of significant shifts from lower to higher discharge occurs. The early part of the records (1882 - the early 1930s) is characterised by high annual discharge with many strong positive anomalies. A period of low discharge started in the dry 1930s and continued until the early 1970s. The last decades were characterised by average annual discharge. The main implication from this study is that freshwater inflow trom European Russia into the Arctic Ocean has not changed since 1882. Oscillations in regional climate and large-scale atmospheric circulation (telecop..nection patterns) drive discharge variability. There are close causal links between variability in regional precipitation, air temperature, snow cover, evaporation, and discharge. Variability in teleconnection indices (most importantly North Atlantic Oscillation, Scandinavian and East Atlantic Jet pattern) explains between 13% (summer) and 48% (winter) variance in seasonal discharge. Construction of regression models simulating hydrological variability using climatic variables shows close agreement between modelled and observed values of summer, autumn, and winter discharge of the SD

Pottery appearance investigation in the Dnepr-Dvina basin in the 7th-6th mill BC, its development and cultural traditions formation was the main subject of this paper. Several ceramic traditions existed here during early neolithic were distinguished. Their different origin, analogies with other various ceramic assemblages of Eastern Europe and the scheme of relative and absolute chronology were established. The analysis of 14C dates, spatial analysis, and analysis of distribution of vessels attributed to different ceramic phases on archaeological sites became the basis for relative and absolute chronology elaborated for this region. Also different other aspects were regarded, such as vessels’ function, technological, morphological and decor traditions, which reflected paflicularities of local cultures and processes of interaction between different communities. An important part of the thesis was devoted to the study of the place of early neolithic ceramic traditions of Dnepr-Dvina region in the context of ceramic assemblages of Eastern Europe. Thus severals models of neolithisation were proposed for this territory, also specifity of it was described. We might suppose transfer of only some components of ceramic traditions, and not the whole complex on new territories. Ceramic traditions of some of their particular constituents existed in different areas located far away from each other could indicate some commun cultural milieu, that united societies attributed now to different archaeological cultures

Résumé :
As a result of the carried-out stratigraphy of areal archaisms and innovations the author came to the conclusion that Krivitji (then the East Slavic) areal was superpositioned on a predominantly Venetic substratum in the banks of the Western Bug, Dvina, Pripyat and Dnieper, some few relics of which are hardly noticeable. The Repertoire of the East-Slavic innovations clearly breaks up into the ancient Krivitji (East Slavic) innovations of VII–VIII centuries. The analysis and stratigraphy of characteristic archaisms and innovations of the East Slavic areal makes it clear that in its repertoire of linguistic archaisms and traditional pantheon the East Slavic dialectal areal and Krivitji dialect in particular clearly originate from Anto-Slavic dialectal group of Late Common Slavonic of the VI century AD. Krivitji originate from Slavic union of tribes of the East-Carpathian areas. On the surface of the western sector of the Eastern Slavic areal some innovations of superstrate nature of Polish origin are visible. They appeared in a period of active hybridization of Old Russian and Old Polish languages, creolization of Polish (in eastern voivodships) in the region of XVI–XVIII centuries.

Résumé :
The main difficulty of stone crosses analyzing is caused by the lack of information concerning these items. This article studies stone crosses from Upper Volga and Western Dvina Rivers by making comparison upon three main criteria: particularities of places where they were found, shape of crosses’ arms and images made on crosses. Such analyzing is based on description of 1760 stone crosses found in Russian or Belorussian territory. Crosses analyzing can clarify their age and purpose of use.

Résumé :
A study was conducted to investigate the level of heavy metals in bottom sediments of the Northern Dvina mouth area and the White Sea in various seasons since 2004. Of greatest interest for the study was presented as such heavy metals as Hg, Pb, Cd, Cu, Ni, Zn, Cr, which belong to the priority group of toxic elements. The heavy metals concentrations were determined with atomic absorption spectrometer. Also the grain-size composition, concentrations of organic carbon and values of hydrogen ion exponent (pH) and redox potential (Eh) in bottom sediments were determined. It was found that the levels of heavy metals in sediments significantly changed in the lateral radial direction. There is a tendency to increased concentrations of some heavy metals downstream of the river. The high concentrations of heavy metals were found within the influence of cities and towns. So the extremely high mercury concentrations were found in the sediments of small and shallow channels crossing the Arkhangelsk city. The study of heavy metal concentrations in the bottom sediments along the profile “the Northern Dvina - Dvina Bay - White sea” showed that the marginal filter contributes to the coprecipitation with suspended metals of anthropogenic genesis. These processes greatly reduce the contamination risk of the White Sea. Thus, the impact of the river on the ecosystem of the White Sea outside the marginal filter is significantly less.

Résumé :
The article analyzes the data of expedition studies conducted by the team of the leading scientific school of Professor Fedorov Yu.A. in the Archangelsk region for more then 10-years period of researches. The materials of mercury content obtained for samples of bottom sediments sampled in the mouth area of the Northern Dvina River, the lakes of Arkhangelsk and the surrounding areas, at Dvina Bay and different areas of the White Sea. Based on the available data and having considered the results of the authors working on the subject of mercury pollution in the subarctic region, conclusions about the level of anthropogenic impact on water bodies and streams of the Arkhangelsk region are justified. Factors that contribute to the formation of relatively high and low concentrations of mercury in sediments identified. The effects of mechanical, hydrochemical, hydrological barriers analyzed. The natural background of mercury in the bottom sediments of the region revealed. Comparative analysis of the accumulation of mercury in the bottom sediments of the study area and other parts of the subarctic region realized. Opportunities and conditions for existence of the effect of "secondary pollution" discussed.
