Résumé :
Driskill and Vrooman have recently provided an interesting argument for a Cournot-based approach to modeling duopsony sports leagues with perfectly inelastic talent supply (the usual assumption for major North American sports league), quite different from the suggestion made by this author (and others) that specifications where talent expenditures are strategic variables (rather than Cournot talent levels) are most appropriate for the context. This comment offers some clarifications and comparisons of the merits of the alternative approaches; they continue to point toward the talent expenditure approach as the most fruitful for the leagues under investigation and probably more generally.

Résumé :
This article investigated the interdependence between crude oil variability and foreign exchange rate changes in Nigeria. Oil price variability is decomposed into fluctuation on Brent Oil, West Texas Intermediate, OPEC Basket Reference Crude Oils and Bonny Light Crude Oil Price Variability. All the data that used in this research come from secondary sources. Annual time series data for Nigeria are used from 1993 to 2022. The research design for the study is ex post facto research analysis of annual multivariate time series data. The study examined the historical data in order to understand the current state of foreign exchange rate in Nigeria and causal connections crude oil price variability using ARDL Bound test, Johansen approach and Error-Correction Mechanism (ECM) models. In the long run, the coefficient of oil price volatility shows a positive and significant relation with the f o r e i g n e x c h a n g e r a t e at 10 percent level of significance. This implies that a 10 percent, increase in oil price volatility induces foreign exchange rate by 0.61 percent. The positive coefficient of oil price volatility tends to reveal that Dornbusch (1976) Overshooting hypothesis of foreign exchange rate holds for Nigeria. This finding is in conformity with previous studies like (Driskill & McCafferty, 1982); Turnovsky & Bhandari, 1982; Driskill & McCafferty, 1982). Furthermore, the coefficient of BOP and OPEC show a negative and insignificant relationship with the foreign exchange rate in the long run. This implies that BOP and OPEC hav e no impact on foreign exchange rate. This is in contrast with economic theory particularly Dutch diseases proposition and in conformity with foreign exchange rate overshooting theory. The negative nexus can be blamed on the inability of government to manage the foreign exchange supply and demand effectively in the country. Diversifying away from oil to other non-oil activities that would generate foreign exchange sh

Résumé :
This paper illustrates Indigenous sexual being on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam),Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, through a narrative of resurgenceand sovereignty. Discussions regarding Indigenous sexual being in Vancouver within scholarship andmedia tend to share a single story which focuses narrowly on a theme of violence. This paper utilizesthe Indigenous concept of a Sovereign Erotic (Driskill, 2004) to illustrate how sexuality can be used as asovereignty practice. I exemplify this concept as an active practice of decolonization through erotics byexploring the works of Virago Nation, an all-Indigenous burlesque group. This paper works to exposenarratives of colonization and gendered violence in Vancouver, in order to share a competing narrativeof sovereignty through sexuality. This narrative of sovereignty provides a broader scope of Indigenoussexuality in Vancouver by including those who reflect resurgence, reclamation, and hope.

Résumé :
This paper provides a discourse analysis of two poems selected from the book Sovereign Erotics: A Collection of Two-Spirit Literature (Driskill et al., 2011b) to explore the concept of grief in Two-Spirit/Queer Indigenous poetry. It analyzes the diction, voice, formality, themes, metaphors, similes, personification, and the use of repetition the authors utilize to represent grief and discover the social, cultural, and political realities and discursive practices behind the poems. It concludes that through their expression of grief, the poets highlight the emergence and endurance of a community and people who will continue to fight for survival and the right to live in peace and harmony outside of colonial gender and sexual binaries. Both poems engage with a continuing sense of Two-Spirit identity that call forth new generations of Queer Indigenous/Two-Spirit people while remembering their history and the Elders who came before to heal personal and historical trauma often through connection with nature, their ancestors, and spirituality.

Résumé :
The goal of the present research is to determine the degree of correspondence between the observed behavior in an experiment and the attitudes expressed in a questionnaire administered after an experiment. To do so, we replicate Driskell and Mullen’s study using more data from multiple experiments and conduct more sophisticated analyses. The attitudinal measures are questionnaire items regarding study participants’ views of themselves, a partner, and their task performance, measured after interaction. The behavioral measure records the participants’ resistance to influence from their partners and is thought to reflect underlying expectations for competence. Using confirmatory factor analysis, we find that there is a strong relationship between attitude and behavior, such that they appear to represent a single construct. Implications of this finding for experimental methodology are discussed in support of more concise approaches.

Résumé :
Over the past three decades youth participation as a theoretical, practical and policy approach has been increasing globally. In 1996, South Africa established various youth institutions at national, provincial and local level. This has translated in many adult organisations having to make a shift in their thinking and operations. This included municipalities at local level. In this paper, I focus on one district municipality in the Limpopo province to examine youth participation practices. I use Driskell and Kudva’s framework of spaces of participation for adult-run organisations seeking to promote youth participation to examine the appropriateness of municipality as a space for participation practice. My research shows that adult attitudes towards young people are central in undermining other participatory spaces created. However, bounded operational issues can be countered by the structural opportunities existing there.

Résumé :
Recently, a circular symmetrical nonlinear stationary 2D differential model for biomedical micropumps, where the amplitude of the electrostatic field is locally proportional to the curvature of the membrane, was studied in detail. Starting from this, in this work, we first introduce a positive and limited function to model the dielectric properties of the material constituting the membrane according to experimental evidence which highlights that electrostatic capacitance variation occurs when the membrane deforms. Therefore, we present and discuss algebraic conditions of existence, uniqueness, and stability, even with the fringing field formulated according to the Pelesko–Driskoll theory, which is known to take these effects into account with terms characterized by reduced computational loads. These conditions, using “gold standard” numerical approaches, allow the optimal numerical recovery of the membrane profile to be achieved under different load conditions and also provide an important criterion for choosing the intended use of the device starting from the choice of the material constituting the membrane and vice versa. Finally, important insights are discussed regarding the pull-in voltage and electrostatic pressure.

Résumé :
This article explores how Joshua Whitehead’s novel Jonny Appleseed discusses the complexities of being Two-Spirit on the reserve and in the city in Canada, exposes the double oppression and erasure of Two-Spiritedness, and demonstrates the possibility—and necessity—of queering the struggle for Indigenous resurgence. This article connects Two-Spirit theory with Native feminist theories (and their analyses of heteropatriarchy) and Qwo-Li Driskill’s concepts of “colonized sexuality” and a “Sovereign Erotic.” By close reading the novel and focusing on the themes of performance, erasure, shame, ceremony, and the body, this article aims to show the ways Indigeneity and queerness are interconnected and constantly re-negotiated. This article also aims to show how these links expose the underlying structural heteronormativity and heteropatriarchy in settler colonialism and Indigenous resurgence discourses. It suggests the possibility of radically revising the struggle for resurgence by centering Two-Spiritedness and understanding Two-Spirit desires and identities as inherently anti-colonial.

Résumé :
Abstract Abstract 4546 Background Cancer related fatigue(CRF) is defined as “a distressing persistent, subjective sense of physical, emotional and/or cognitive tiredness or exhaustion related to cancer or cancer treatment that is not proportional to recent activity and interferes with usual functioning”. CRF is felt by patients to be a generalized, mind-body sensation not relieved by a normal night's rest. It is affects 70-100% of cancer patients during and after therapy for cancer. In a recent study of hematological malignancy patients, 55% of patients had fatigue. At present, few interventions have demonstrated efficacy in decreasing the severity of CRF. In studies with healthy subjects as well as in patients with solid tumors, naps have been effective in improving functional status and subsequent sleep, with a short nap being more effective. Unfortunately, the effects of napping have not been well studied in patients with hematological malignancies. Methods Adult hematological malignancy patients experiencing fatigue with severity rated as 7 or greater out of 10, and who have completed cancer therapy at least 1 month prior to study entry are recruited for participation. Those enrolling in the study are advised to take a brief (<30 minute) afternoon nap. At intake, subjects completed Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy - Fatigue Subscale (FACIT-Fatigue) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), a measure of global sleep quality. Patients participated in weekly meetings with a staff clinician conducted either by phone or in person over the following 8 weeks. At four and eight weeks post-study entry, patients came in for physical exams, labs, and sleep and fatigue assessments. Additionally, patients kept a sleep diary that included amount of time slept, use of other fatigue relieving agents, and intervention compliance. The target sample size for the study is 34 participants; this sample size will be powered at 80% to show a one half standard deviation change from mean FACIT-Fatigue and PSQI scores. Results Data collection is still ongoing. To date, data collection and analyses have been completed for three subjects. The mean FACIT-Fatigue scores improved from a baseline of 40.5 to 44 at the study's conclusion. The PSQI score on average improved from a baseline of 7.5 to 6. Conclusions Changes in the mean fatigue scores exceed one half of one standard deviation from the mean in normative data. This suggests a clinically significant improvement, and further data collection may reveal statistical as well as clinical significance. Changes in sleep quality scores suggest improved sleep symptoms, but not at a level that would represent clinically significant change. Further data need to be acquired before making definitive conclusions; however, preliminary results are encouraging and suggest there may be significant improvement in fatigue and in sleep symptoms in hematological malignancy patients, with a simple napping intervention. Résumé :
IntroductionAs the Covid-19 crisis ensues throughout the world, researchers from several fields of research consider how they could contribute to the current understanding of the crisis. In the field of strategic management, we face a special problem as most companies scraped their strategic plans for the year 2020 as they are currently more focused on surviving the crisis with emergent strategies. Strategic management researchers are now in a position where their main object of research has been highly influenced by the pandemic and face the challenge of developing impactful and meaningful research in a world where all eyes are looking for answers to the crisis. In the Iberoamerican Journal of Strategic Management, we decided that we would encourage researchers in our field to develop research that contributes to a better understanding of the pandemic crisis and their impacts on organizations. We are not currently announcing a special issue dedicated to the pandemic crisis. However, we are stating that we welcome and encourage research on the investigation of aspects that link the pandemic to organizations and strategy. We believe that it is crucial for researchers to acknowledge and to understand the impacts that the pandemic crisis has on organizations. The more we understand this crisis, the more we can contribute to reducing the effects it will have on organizations and jobs. Besides, we believe that this is a time when we, as researchers, have to contribute to society by helping in every way we can. The best way to contribute with our skills is to provide a better understanding of how, in which conditions, and to what extent the pandemic crisis will influence organizations. We provide two following sections for this editorial. First, a suggestion of research themes to be addressed, and secondly, a section regarding the cautions we must have when researching the effects of the pandemic crisis. Suggestions of research themes Impacts of the pandemic crisis over firm performance. Some works are already looking into how the pandemic crisis will impact firm performance (Aifuwa et al., 2020; Gonzalez-Uribe Wang, 2020). This is a very important topic as the economic performance of the world will be hindered by the crisis. It is important not only to understand how the pandemic will reduce the performance of firms but also to investigate under which conditions this reduction will happen, in which industries, and depending on which firm-specific settings. Strategic responses to the pandemic crisis. Which strategies have firms put up to deal with the crisis? Which kinds of strategic moves have been successful and reduced the impact of the crisis? How could these strategies shape businesses in the near future? It is especially interesting to investigate if firms can develop capabilities through the crisis and how these capabilities willshape future strategies. Global value chains and the pandemic. As companies throughout the world will have to deal with the disruption of global value chains during the pandemic (Bonadio et al., 2020), it is important to investigate how this disruption could shape the future of global value chains. Will companies diversify their value chains to avoid future problems in similar situations? What have we learned with the challenges of finding alternatives and dealing with disruptions of the chain? Institutional pressures, adaptation, and conformity in times of pandemics. Institutions are crucial for strategic decisions and the following performance of firms. However, the institutional environment is usually perceived as the rules of the game that change in a very slow fashion (North, 1990). The challenges that the pandemic crisis imposed upon firms have greatly changed the way that business is conducted. But are institutional pressures reinforced or loosened during a crisis as the pandemic? Could the pandemic crisis spark an institutional change? Pandemic-driven stress and its effects on decision-making. Organizations already struggle to maintain acceptable levels of strategic decision-making in normal circumstances, and in situations such as the current one, this becomes even more complex, subjective, and difficult. Decision-making is the cornerstone of most schools of thought in strategy, and crises escalate choices and consequences (Oroszi, 2018). Latin American organizations are sometimes considered more vulnerable in a plethora of dimensions, and the ongoing pandemic is most likely to influence decision-making in the area negatively. Teams, coordination and multinational efforts. Crises stir trouble but also provide interesting aspects worth of studying for teams and coordination (Driskell et al., 2018). Whereas technologies may mitigate the negative effects of the pandemic on team coordination, new ways of organizing work and making group efforts and decisions may also come up. Multiple stakeholders and conflicts in decision-making. Critical times impose extreme pressures not only on teams but also on stakeholders, especially external ones. Current literature still has gaps on conflicts between ideas as competing pressures and crises tend to overemphasize and distort stakes (van der Wal, 2020). Born globals, startups, and innovation in times of crisis. What are the effects – both negative and positive – of crises on innovation? More specifically, what happens to supposedly more vulnerable beginning endeavors such as born globals (Pepelasis Protogerou, 2018) and startups (Haase Eberl, 2019)? What are the capabilities they have developed or are seeking in order to survive these troubling times? SME Entrepreneurship and frugal innovation. As with born globals and startups, we must look to the opposite end of the scale. How are small and medium organizations dealing with the effects of the current crisis? Are there any behavior shifts and strategic alterations that can subside such negative consequences?Countercyclical industries and fields during crises. In the Iberoamerican territories, are there any industries and fields that are gaining momentum in a countercyclical fashion? What are these and what features do they have to promote growth? Can this growth be sustainable once the crisis subsides? Agroindustrial and low-tech industries may be examples, but other fields can also shed light on the matter (Martins et al., 2019). Cautions for researching the pandemic crisis As the pandemic crisis is still undergoing as we write this editorial, we thought of providing some guidance about the special care researcher must-have when dealing with this delicate issue. These are ethical guidelines that we see as important to be followed to ensure a meaningful discussion in the academic field. Do not put a value on lives and health. It is impossible to put a value on life. As researchers of the management field, we are focused on understanding the effects of the pandemic on organizations. We have seen statements treating the crisis as a tradeoff between lives and jobs, or between health and the economy. We are not in a position of pointing a side in this situation. We advise researchers always to remember that lives are invaluable. Do not step outside of your field of research. Many scholars from several fields have conducted research trying to understand and predict the spread of the Covid-19 disease, mainly using their skills with data. This effort is remarkable; however, this is not a competence of the management field as we are not trained in understanding diseases. We, therefore, encourage researchers to look at the effects of the crisis in organizations, and we advise not to delve into understanding the disease per se as this is not our expertise. Do not guide the research question by political agendas. We understand that there are many political interests regarding the results of research on the crisis. We also understand that it is tempting to answer direct questions posed by politicians in the issue. However, we advise scholars not to directly tackle into answering politically-driven questions and to maintain the impartiality we always have. Do not twist your theory/method/argumentation to fit a crisis. As of now, we see a surge on pandemic-related research on all fields. While in some fields this is expected (such as epidemiology or economics), not all management research is closely related to the topic. Several fields have also seen a surge in pandemic-framed research that is only marginally tangential to the topic – management included. Reshaping your study to fit the crisis it does not directly relate to is not only intellectually dishonest but also takes space and time from editors and reviewers from doing their job on papers that actually can contribute to the ongoing scenario.
