Résumé :
In this study, a dual-output converter with a wide input voltage range is proposed for directly equalized charging of series-connected batteries without additional power conversion losses. Compared with most of the equalized charging topologies, such as the those with a multi-winding transformer or voltage multiplier, the proposed converter could be applied to different voltage conversion ratio applications. The proposed converter is capable not only of step-down but also step-up/down power conversions for different input voltage levels. By operating in discontinuous conduction mode, the diode reverse recovery losses can be eliminated and operation stability can also be enhanced. The operation principles and design criteria are both illustrated. A prototype of charging two series-connected LiFePO4 batteries is constructed. Corresponding experimental results of different input voltage levels are provided to verify the performance and validity.

Résumé :
ABSTRACT We present polynomial conversions between each of 11 different strong line gas-phase metallicity calibrations, each based on ∼1.1 million star-forming spaxels in the public Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 15 (DR15) Mapping Nearby Galaxies at Apache Point Observatory (MaNGA) survey. For this sample, which is ∼20 times larger than previous works, we present fifth-order polynomial fits for each of 110 possible calibration conversions, for both Small Magellanic Cloud-type and Milky Way-type dust corrections. The typical 2σ scatter around our polynomial fits is 0.1 dex; we present the range over which the metallicities are valid. Conversions between metallicities which rely on the same set of line ratios, or a heavily shared set of emission lines, have reduced scatter in their conversions relative to those conversions with little overlap in required emission lines. Calibration conversions with less consistent sets of emission lines also have increased galaxy-to-galaxy variability, and this variability can account for up to 35 per cent of the total scatter. We also compare our conversions to previous work with the single fibre SDSS DR7 spectra along with higher spatial resolution data from the TYPHOON Integral Field Spectroscopy survey, resulting in comparison samples with spatial resolutions from several kpc down to ∼100 pc. Our metallicity conversions, obtained with the large sample of MaNGA, are robust against the influence of diffuse ionized gas, redshift, effective radius, and spatial blurring, and are therefore consistent across both integrated spectra and the high-resolution integral field spectroscopy data.

Résumé :
Abstract To solve the problem of single-point series components in the internal circuit of the current PCM/FM launch vehicle carrying telemetry transmitter, this paper proposes a new circuit architecture that can eliminate most of the single-point working components of the transmitter without changing the external interface and usage mode, thus improving the reliability of the whole system. This scheme uses large-scale integrated circuits to reduce the number of chips in the transmitter. Two improvements are made in the overall structure of the transmitter. One is to use a zero intermediate frequency (IF) orthogonal up-conversion scheme to replace the traditional high IF superheterodyne scheme, which reduces the number of single-point series components in the circuit. Another is to utilize redundancy design, increasing backup and fault detection channels. According to the development of domestic devices, this paper uses two domestic B9361 radio frequency (RF) conversion chips to realize two ways up-conversion as main and backup channels and two ways down-conversions as fault detection channels. The experimental results show that the new telemetry transmitter based on this scheme can be compatible with the current transmitter and effectively improve the reliability of the whole system.

Résumé :
This manuscript proposes a novel nonisolated negative output buck-boost converter topology for wide voltage conversion applications. To design this converter, a typical buck-boost converter configuration is used. In conventional buck-boost converter, the active switches designed are replaced by two switches-two inductors (2S2L) cells. The proposed converter operates in the continuous conduction mode (CCM) operation under steady-state conditions. This converter has a lower component count and low voltage stress on the switches and diodes. Moreover, the major advantage of this buck-boost converter topology is that a wide range of step-down and step-up voltage conversions can be achieved. The performance of the proposed system is designed in MATLAB/SIMULINK. A few other comparisons are also presented to demonstrate the competitiveness of the proposed buck-boost converter.

Résumé :
Use of ground water containing ammonical nitrogen has been increasing in Kathmandu valley. The use of locally and cheaply fitted Hydrogenotrophic Denitrification (HD) has been taken as an effective way to remove the nitrates in this study. Comparative analysis of HD reactors had been studied for the determination of the effective flow direction of water as Up Flow or Down Flow. The result reviled that flow direction as Down Flow HD reactor performed slightly better than Up Flow HD reactor. The maximum NO3-N conversion reached 100% for Down Flow and 98.65% for Up Flow reactor with maximum of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) removed were 41.11% and 33.89% for Down Flow and Up Flow reactor respectively. The difference in NO3-N conversion and TIN removal were observed. As the NO2-N was accumulated, suggesting NO3 conversion is higher than NO2 conversion thus, and majorly incomplete denitrification existed. The NO2-N in water reached to maximum of 78.89 mg/l and 72.55 mg/l for Down Flow and Up Flow rector.

Résumé :
Photon energy conversion can be accomplished in two opposing manners, down conversion (i.e., singlet fission, SF), and up-conversion (often referred to as triplet-triplet annihilation up-conversion, TTA-UC), both of which have the potential to help overcome the Shockley-Queisser limit of single-junction solar cells. Inter-chromophore electronic coupling plays opposing roles in these two processes. The energies of the lowest singlet excited state and twice the triplet excited state are comparable in tetracene dimers, which exhibit both up- and down-conversion. Here, we have designed meta-phenylene- and 1,3-diethynyladamantyl-linked tetracene dimers with different electronic coupling to probe the interplay between intramolecular SF (intra-SF) and intramolecular TTA-UC (intra-TTA-UC) viasteady-state and time-resolved absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. In addition, temperature-dependent measurements are carried out to shed light on the thermal effects on intra-SF and intra-TTA-UC. We have also used a Pd-phthalocyanine as photosensitizer to enable intra-TTA-UC in the two dimers via indirect photo-excitation in the near-infrared. These results not only reveal the interplay between intra-SF and intra-TTA-UC, but also provide guidelines and strategies for the design of photon down- and up-converting materials.

Résumé :
This article presents fully integrated 39-GHz bidirectional up- and down-conversion mixers for 5G millimeter-wave (mmWave) applications. Fabricated in a 65-nm CMOS process with a 1.2-V supply voltage, the up- and down-conversion mixers consume 39 and 43 mW, respectively. For 5G time-division duplexing (TDD) operation, intermediate-frequency (IF)/local-oscillator (LO)/radio-frequency (RF) T/R switches are introduced. For better isolation and low insertion loss between the up- and down-conversion mixer, a series-shunt single-pole double-throw (SPDT) structure and an equivalent lumped λ/4 transmission line are proposed for IF and RF T/R switches, respectively. To realize compact area and wide bandwidth, a transformer-based matching network is adopted in this design. Targeting multi-channel phased array applications, the measurement result shows that the up-conversion mixer achieves a 2.5-dB peak conversion gain with 6.5 GHz 3-dB bandwidth. Including the insertion loss of the switch and IF signal routing, at the maximum gain of 36.5 GHz, the up-conversion mixer achieves an output 1-dB gain compression point (OP1dB) of 2.5 dBm. Furthermore, the down-conversion mixer achieves a 5-dB peak conversion gain with a 9.7-GHz 3-dB bandwidth.

Résumé :
The increasing demand for electrical energy must be balanced with using renewable energy. However, the use of renewable energy requires a system to maximize the conversion of renewable energy into electrical energy. Various topologies have been studied to achieve maximum energy conversion. Two types of inverters, namely step up-down, have been widely used but have their respective limitations. Step-down inverters can only be used in lower output voltage than input voltage conditions with simple control, while step-up inverters can only operate in higher output voltage than input voltage conditions. This paper aims to combine these two converters to have both step-up-down voltage functions, with the goal of expanding the operating range and maintaining the advantages of each type. Thus, a topology called a step-up-down five-level inverter with a simple voltage-controlled capacitor balancing system is proposed in this paper. Finally, the simulation and laboratory tests were done. This inverter operates in step-up-down voltage, and the voltage in capacitors is always balanced to reach the desired level. The voltage control was done to get the constant voltage event the load was changed.

Résumé :
Satan has long served as the ultimate evil, the world’s primary scapegoat. The Devil’s role in music, especially extreme music and heavy metal, has been to shock, terrify and enrage. But what if the imagery and ideology of Satan is used to combat an immoral societal evil? Is it then possible that the radical evil could itself become a force for good? This article intends to examine the music and philosophy of three modern bands, dubbed The New Satanists: Ghost, Twin Temple and Zeal & Ardor. Each band uses varying degrees of satanic influence to raise awareness of their perceived objectionable and abject issues in society: a harsh and unjust patriarchy, the Christian conversions and role of religion during the era of American slavery and suppression of individuality from the Catholic Church. Through the examination of these bands, social issues and Jean Baudrillard’s concept of symbolic evil, this article will examine theories of traditional evil potentially becoming a force for good when it combats the moral sickness existent in society. An alternate perspective – that of Satan as a liberator – could serve as a cure for a gamut of ills.

A non-isolated single-switch step up/down converter with wide conversion range is proposed in this paper. In the porposed converter, a boost converter and a single-ended primary inductor converter (SEPIC) are connected in cascade. Due to the cascade connection of a boost converter and SEPIC, wide conversion range is achieved. By utilizing a single switch, a complex control circuitry problem of conventional cascade converters is solved. The boost converter at the input stage can provide a continuous input current. The operation principle and steady-state analysis of the proposed converter are provided. A prototype of the proposed converter is developed, and its experimental results are presented for validation

Résumé :
For the time being, moisture effect to the useful quality of coals has been researched comprehensively in detail. Herewith, there are a lot of unsolved problems related to the safety working out of coal layers. Presence of different forms of moisture in fossil coals essentially influences the coal layers hazardous characteristics manifestation during the mining activities. The Article deals with the results of analyses of more than thousand samples of the Donets Basin coals from different deposits, to research the relationship of total moisture and organic matter components in the coal carbonizations during the metamorphic processes. The researches have allowed separation of 3 stages for the fossil coal conversions. It is noted that at the initial stage, the carbon content is about 80%, moisture proportion in carbonization is rather high—0.36; but it decreases abruptly down to 0.12, in case of the carbon content increasing up to 86.5%. And the proportion of components (hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and sulphur) total increases essentially up to 0.88. At the next stage, at 86.5÷91.5%, the components proportion in carbonization changes insignificantly. At the final stage of coal metamorphic conversions, 4-time growth of moisture proportion takes place in carbonization. It is found that moisture proportion in any form to be found in the coals shall be considered as a rank index, which is necessary to determine the coal layers hazardous characteristics.

Résumé :
An all-optical premodulation-free microwave frequency up/down-conversion method is presented based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers for bidirection radio-over-fiber systems. Through optical heterodyning between the modulated optical carrier and the Stokes light, the microwave signal of 1.5 GHz is up-converted to 9 and 12 GHz, and the microwave signal of 9 GHz is down-converted to 1.5 GHz. The unexpected microwaves are more than 7 dB suppressed by loading the signal to convert with the optical-carrier-suppressed modulation.

Résumé :
Hydrogen and electricity are expected to be the two major energy carriers of the future. Unfortunately, neither can be stored as an ambient-temperature liquid, which is the ideal energy-carrier medium. H2 can be used in a wide variety of both stationary and transportation applications, as envisioned by DOE’s H2@Scale program [1]. Although DOE has not yet established targets for stationary H2 storage, the key metrics for an “ideal hydrogen carrier” are [2]: liquid at all operating temperatures, high energy density, efficient conversions at relatively benign conditions, long cycle life, compatible with existing infrastructure for fuels, low cost, and safety (toxicological and eco-toxicological). Relative to thermal conversions, electrochemistry can enable relatively efficient conversions at more benign conditions. While electrochemically-rechargeable liquids (ERLs) are not a new idea, the focus of this talk will be on innovative conversion options, which includes combinations of the cell configurations shown in Fig. 1. In particular, it will be shown that ERLs that can be charged using either electrical and/or hydrogen energy, and which can also produce H2 or electricity on demand can enable highly flexible energy-storage systems that can potentially be used for both stationary and transportation applications. In short, an ERL can provide essential “energy-banker services” by simultaneously converting and storing these two major “energy currencies” of the future in a single aqueous liquid. These systems can be readily scaled up or scaled down. This talk will also present a very brief overview of potentially attractive ERL options, which can include conventional liquid-organic hydrogen carriers (i.e., LOHCs, such as organics that are liquids at room temperature, like methylcyclohexane), as well as aqueous solutions (e.g., diluted alcohols) or dissolved solids (e.g., redox-flow-battery electrolytes) [3]. The current status of this technology will be briefly reviewed, including a summary the key technical barriers, as well as some enabling concepts to potentially address each of these challenges. The goal will be to provide the audience with a sufficient overview of these ERL-conversion system concepts, such that a productive discussion can occur on additional improvements, potential end uses, and future collaborations.
