Résumé :
Continuous Beam Bridge was widely used, while seismic problem of it was prominent in meizoseismal area. According to mechanism of DSB, seismic performance of DSB was studied and the parameters of DSB were analyzed later, based on non-navigable bridge of Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge in deep water. It was found that DSB was an effective seismic-isolation device which could significantly reduce the seismic force although seismic displacement of bridge was increased. Yielding force and post-yielding stiffness were two main parameters of DSB.

Résumé :
There is an increased interest in developing high-yielding hulless feed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) with low fibre content for swine rations. However, little information on physiological basis to select for high-yielding hulless barley was available. Approximately 400 double haploid barley lines were derived from a Kunlun No. 1/CIMMYT No. 6 cross using the bulbosum method. Both parental lines were six-row feed barley types differing in seed type, leaf type, leaf area distribution, tillering, time to heading and maturity and grain yield. Although Kunlun No. 1 yielded abou t 66% of CIMMYT No. 6, its seed was hulless with a grain weight 21% larger than covered CIMMYT No. 6 seed. Hulless barley, with its reduced fibre content, is desirable in swine rations. Selected double haploid lines (100 covered lines in 1995 and 100 hulless lines in 1996), parental lines and an adapted check, Chapais were evaluated at Ottawa, ON, and Charlottetown, PEI. We found that grain yields were significantly correlated with leaf area index (LAI), dry matter (DM), length and width of flag leaves, and plant height. All of the highest yielding lines in both hulless and covered populations common to both sites were similar to the parent Kunlun No. 1 with broader, shorter and greener leaves than the parent, CIMMYT No. 6. The best covered lines yielded more than the check cv. Chapais and some of the hulless lines were similar to the check. This study suggests that selection of high-yielding low fibre double haploid barley lines based on physiological traits has potential to increase grain yield for feed barley. Key words: Hulless barley, physiological traits, yield, feed quality, double haploid

Résumé :
The effects of athermal martensite on yielding behavior and strain partitioning during deformation is explored using in situ neutron diffraction for a 0.14C–7.14Mn medium manganese steel. Utilizing a novel heat treatment, termed double soaking, samples with similar microstructural composition and varied athermal martensite strength and microstructural characteristics, which composed the bulk of the matrix phase, were characterized. It was found that the addition of either as-quenched or tempered athermal martensite led to an improvement in mechanical properties as compared to a ferrite plus austenite medium manganese steel, although the yielding and work hardening behavior were highly dependent upon the martensite characteristics. Specifically, athermal martensite was found to promote continuous yielding and improve the work hardening rate during deformation. The results of this study are particularly relevant when considering the effect of post-processing thermal heat treatments, such as tempering or elevated temperature service environments, on the mechanical properties of medium manganese steels containing athermal martensite.

Résumé :
AbstractIn this paper, case wise studies have been made to investigate the possibility of propagation of Rayleigh-type wave in a composite structure comprised of two transversely-isotropic material layers with viscoelastic effect. The common interface between the layers is considered to be rigid whereas the base has been considered as rigid, stress-free and yielding in three different cases (Case-I, II and III). Closed-form of frequency equation and damped velocity equation has been established analytically for propagation of Rayleigh-type wave in a composite structure for all three cases. In special cases, frequency equations and damped velocity equations for the case of composite structure with rigid, stress-free and yielding base have been found in well-agreement to the established standard results pre-existing in the literature. Numerical and graphical computation of phase and damped velocity of Rayleigh-type wave propagating in the composite structure comprised of double transversely-isotropic viscoelastic Taylor sandstone material layers (Model-I) and double isotropic viscoelastic material layers (Model-II) have been carried out. Significant effect of anisotropy and width ratio of layers, dilatational and volume viscoelasticity associated with viscoelasticity of layer medium and yielding parameter associated with yielding base of composite structure on phase and damped velocities of Rayleigh-type wave for the considered models have been traced out. The comparative study has been performed to unravel the effect of viscoelasticity over elasticity and anisotropy over isotropy in the present problem.

Based on a general Riemann theta function and Hirota’s bilinear forms, we devise a straightforward way to explicitly construct double periodic wave solution of(2+1)-dimensional nonlinear partial differential equation. The resulting theory is applied to the(2+1)-dimensional Sawada-Kotera equation, thereby yielding its double periodic wave solutions. The relations between the periodic wave solutions and soliton solutions are rigorously established by a limiting procedure.

Résumé :
In this paper, stress distribution in a double lap joint subjected to a tensile load is investigated using the boundary element method. The adhesive used in this study is a commercial epoxy system which can be cured at room temperature. The adhesive is assumed to be linearly viscoelastic. The order of the singularity is obtained numerically for a given viscoelastic model. The numerical results show that interface stresses are large enough to initiate local yielding or edge cracks. Since the exceedingly large stresses cannot be borne by the adhesive layer, edge cracks can occur at the interface corner.

Résumé :
Environmental pollution is one of the most pressing challenges in today’s world. The main cause of this pollution is fuel emissions from automobiles and other sources. As industrialization progresses, we will be unable to compromise on the use of energy to power heavy machines and will be forced to seek out the best options. As a consequence, utilizing green fuel, such as biodiesel derived from natural sources, is a realistic option. Jatropha curcas L. (Euphorbiaceae) is recognized as the greatest feedstock for biodiesel production throughout the world, and it has gained a huge market value in the recent years. Conventional cultivation alone will not be sufficient to meet the global need for the plant’s biomass for the production of biodiesel. Adoption of plant tissue culture techniques that improve the biomass availability is an immediate need. The present review provides detailed information regarding in-vitro plant propagation (direct and indirect organogenesis), somatic embryogenesis, and acclimatization protocols of plantlets for stabilized production of biomass. The review also focuses on biotechnological approaches such as gene transformation studies, production of haploids, and double haploids for developing elite germplasm for high biomass and improved traits for the production of biodiesel.

In order to model structural response of the steel arch under thermal loading, some significant factors such as the degradation of the stiffness of the steel arch prior to yielding at elevated temperatures is taken into account, the formulation of critical load is proposed and their variation trends with temperatures is analysed. The proposed method has significant potential for use in the analysis of steel arches subjected to uniformly distributed load at elevated temperature and can provide a foundation for codified procedures in design.

Résumé :
Four new double-cross hybrids and 16 triple-cross hybrids were evaluated and compared with triple-cross commercial hybrids H-135, A- 791, PUMA 1157 and PUMA 1159, and double-cross H-137, during the 1996 spring-summer season. The purpose was to offer new and better options to producers in the Bajio and Highland Transitional Zones in Mexico (1800-2200 m.a.s.l.). Analysis of variance showed highly significant statistical differences for almost all variables for which the genotype factor was studied, and non-significant differences for repetitions. Nine triple-cross hybrids yielded between 8 and 12 t/ha, a greater yield than that of the rest of the hybrids (double and triple crosses), and also greater than that of the controls. The triple-cross UHT96E410 hybrid stood out yielding 12,4 t/ha in 77 days between sowing and tasseling. The triple-cross control A-791 followed, yielding 8.6 t/ha in 99 days between sowing and tasseling; UHT96E410 grew up to 209 cm in height. Five of the controls showed heights of over 230 cm. These new hybrids stood out for their superior yield and favorable agronomic traits, offering farmers in the transitional zones of Mexico a broader variety of options.

Résumé :
The “alte Weise” melody for solo cor anglais from the beginning of Act III of Tristan und Isolde is submitted to a double analysis. First, it is treated by the techniques of Jackendoff's and my A Generative Theory of Tonal Music, yielding a prolongational structure that resembles a Schenkerian analysis even though it is based on contrasting principles. In the course of this analysis connections are made to other passages in Tristan. Second, the melody is treated according to schematic phrasal norms, yielding surface and underlying phrasal forms. Nattiez's paradigmatic approach is then adapted to demonstrate the underlying phrasal-prolongational coherence of the melody as a whole.

Résumé :
Understanding the structural evolution process after the yielding of networks in polymer nanocomposites can provide significant insights into the design and fabrication of high-performance nanocomposites. In this work, using hydroxyl-terminated 1,4-polybutadiene (HTPB)/organo-clay nanocomposite gel as a model, we explored the yielding and recovery process of a polymer network. Linear rheology results revealed the formation of a nanocomposite gel with a house-of-cards structure due to the fully exfoliated 6 to 8 wt% organo-clays. Within this range, nonlinear rheologic experiments were introduced to yield the gel network, and the corresponding recovery processes were monitored. It was found that the main driving force of network reconstruction was the polymer–clay interaction, and the rotation of clay sheets played an important role in arousing stress overshoots. By proton double-quantum (1H DQ) NMR spectroscopy, residual dipolar coupling and its distribution contributed by HTPB segments anchored on clay sheets were extracted to unveil the physical network information. During the yielding process of a house-of-cards network, e.g., 8 wt% organo-clay, nearly one-fourth of physical cross-linking was broken. Based on the rheology and 1H DQ NMR results, a tentative model was proposed to illustrate the yielding and recovery of the network in HTPB/organo-clay nanocomposite gel.

Résumé :
Abstract Objective To assess prospectively the interpretative performance of automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) as a supplemental screening after digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) or as a standalone screening of women with dense breast tissue. Methods Under an IRB-approved protocol (written consent required), women with dense breasts prospectively underwent concurrent baseline DBT and ABUS screening. Examinations were independently evaluated, in opposite order, by two of seven Mammography Quality Standards Act–qualified radiologists, with the primary radiologist arbitrating disagreements and making clinical management recommendations. We report results for 1111 screening examinations (598 first year and 513 second year) for which all diagnostic workups are complete. Imaging was also retrospectively reviewed for all cancers. Statistical assessments used a 0.05 significance level and accounted for correlation between participants’ examinations. Results Of 1111 women screened, primary radiologists initially “recalled” based on DBT alone (6.6%, 73/1111, CI: 5.2%–8.2%), of which 20 were biopsied, yielding 6/8 total cancers. Automated breast ultrasound increased recalls overall to 14.4% (160/1111, CI: 12.4%–16.6%), with 27 total biopsies, yielding 1 additional cancer. Double reading of DBT alone increased the recall rate to 10.7% (119/1111), with 21 biopsies, with no improvement in cancer detection. Double reading ABUS increased the recall rate to 15.2% (169/1111, CI: 13.2%–17.5%) of women, of whom 22 were biopsied, yielding the detection of 7 cancers, including one seen only on double reading ABUS. Inter-radiologist agreement was similar for recall recommendations from DBT (κ = 0.24, CI: 0.14–0.34) and ABUS (κ = 0.23, CI: 0.15–0.32). Integrated assessments from both readers resulted in a recall rate of 15.1% (168/1111, CI: 13.1%–17.4%). Conclusion Supplemental or standalone ABUS screening detected cancers not seen on DBT, but substantially increased noncancer recall rates.

Résumé :
The failure mode of steel plate with a center elliptic corroding hole double-sided adhesively bonded by carbon fiber composite patch is identified and studied, and analytical solution to load-carrying capacity of damaged steel plate bonded by composite patch is presented in this paper. Ultimate load of patched steel plate corresponding to each failure mode is derived and calculated respectively, the load carrying capacity of the patched plate is equal to the minimum value of these calculations. Yielding load when yielding occurs near the hole-edge of repaired structure from present method was compared to the results of ANSYS FEA, and the ultimate load of repaired plate from present method was compared to the test results. Results indicate: Repaired by bonded composite patch, static strength and loading carrying capacity of damaged steel plate or structures can be effectively restored. Yielding load and ultimate load of patched steel plate is visibly increased. The present analytical results have a good agreement with FEA and experimental results.

Résumé :
SUMMARY In planetary fluid cores, the density depends on temperature and chemical composition, which diffuse at very different rates. This leads to various instabilities, bearing the name of double-diffusive convection (DDC). We investigate rotating DDC (RDDC) in fluid spheres. We use the Boussinesq approximation with homogeneous internal thermal and compositional source terms. We focus on the finger regime, in which the thermal gradient is stabilizing whereas the compositional one is destabilizing. First, we perform a global linear stability analysis in spheres. The critical Rayleigh numbers drastically drop for stably stratified fluids, yielding large-scale convective motions where local analyses predict stability. We evidence the inviscid nature of this large-scale double-diffusive instability, enabling the determination of the marginal stability curve at realistic planetary regimes. In particular, we show that in stably stratified spheres, the Rayleigh numbers Ra at the onset evolve like Ra ∼ Ek−1, where Ek is the Ekman number. This differs from rotating convection in unstably stratified spheres, for which Ra ∼ Ek−4/3. The domain of existence of inviscid convection thus increases as Ek−1/3. Secondly, we perform non-linear simulations. We find a transition between two regimes of RDDC, controlled by the strength of the stratification. Furthermore, far from the RDDC onset, we find a dominating equatorially antisymmetric, large-scale zonal flow slightly above the associated linear onset. Unexpectedly, a purely linear mechanism can explain this phenomenon, even far from the instability onset, yielding a symmetry breaking of the non-linear flow at saturation. For even stronger stable stratification, the flow becomes mainly equatorially symmetric and intense zonal jets develop. Finally, we apply our results to the early Earth core. Double diffusion can reduce the critical Rayleigh number by four decades for realistic core conditions. We suggest that the early Earth core was prone to turbulent RDDC, with large-scale zonal flows.
