Résumé :
For low-speed and large-thrust situations, the single-layer winding permanent magnet linear motor is inefficient because of its large distance, and the thrust fluctuation is large. In order to solve this problem, a finite element analysis model of cylindrical permanent magnet linear motor is established in a cylindrical permanent magnet linear motor, and the Ansoft software simulation is used to ensure the positioning force and thrust of the double-layer winding motor and single-layer winding motor under the same key parameters. The performance of double-layer winding motor and Single-layer winding motor at different frequencies is compared and analyzed. The simulation results show that the cylindrical linear motor with double-layer fractional-slot winding structure is more suitable for occasions with low speed and large thrust, and has higher operation efficiency.

Résumé :
The spoke-type permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), which is a general ferrite magnetic flux-concentrated motor, has a low portion of reluctance torque at the total torque magnitude. Therefore, as a way to increase the reluctance torque, there is a double-layer spoke-type PMSM that can maximize the difference in inductance between the d-axis and the q-axis. However, in the double-layer spoke-type PMSM, cogging torque, torque ripple, and total harmonic distortion (THD) increase with reluctance torque, which is the main cause of vibration and noise. In this paper, a method is proposed that provides the same effect as skew without dividing stages of the permanent magnet by dividing the core of the rotor into two types so that it is easy to manufacture according to the number of stages, unlike extant skew methods. Based on the method, the reduction in cogging torque and THD was verified by finite element analysis (FEA).

Résumé :
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to compare the study between two topologies of fractional-slot permanent-magnet machines such that: double-layer topology and single-layer one. The comparison considers the assessment of the iron loss in the laminated cores of the magnetic circuit as well as in the permanent magnets (PMs) for constant torque and flux weakening ranges. Design/methodology/approach – The investigation of the hysteresis and eddy-current loss has been carried out using 2D transient FEA models. Findings – It has been found that the stator iron losses are almost the same for both topologies. Whereas, the single-layer topology is penalized by higher iron loss especially the eddy-current ones taking place in the PMs. This is due to their denser harmonic content of the armature air gap MMF spatial repartition. Originality/value – The analysis of the iron loss maps in different parts of each machine including stator and rotor laminations as well as the PMs, in one hand, and the investigation of their variation with respect to the speed, in the other hand, represent the major contribution of this work.

Résumé :
Experiments are performed in the CHI KUNG plasma reactor to study the effect of introducing transverse components (aligned along the x-axis) to the cylindrically symmetric magnetic field (aligned along the z-axis) to produce magnetic steering of the ion beam in the Helicon Double Layer Thruster (HDLT). CHI KUNG is a cylindrical helicon plasma reactor, on which the first HDLT prototype is based, consisting of a 15 cm diameter, 31 cm long Pyrex source tube attached contiguously to a 32 cm diameter, 30 cm long aluminium diffusion chamber. Coaxially surrounding the source tube is an 18 cm long double saddle antenna connected to an L-matching network/generator system, fed with 13.56 MHz of radio-frequency power. Enclosing the source tube and antenna are two coaxial solenoids, referred to as the source and exit solenoids, which generate a diverging magnetic field. The peak magnetic field magnitudes produced by the source and exit solenoids are 132 G and 118 G, respectively, when a current of 3 A is flowing through each solenoid, pointing north into the diffusion chamber. Argon gas is fed in through the diffusion chamber and pumped to an operational pressure of 0.3 mTorr by a turbomolecular/rotary pumping system. Under these conditions, a double layer is formed ~ 5 cm inside the exit of the source tube, which accelerates a population of ions to form an ion beam that can be detected in the diffusion chamber. In this thesis, spatial measurement techniques are developed to measure the properties of the ion beam in the diffusion chamber, downstream of the double layer. Of particular interest is the ion beam density, and an analysis is developed to determine this parameter from the spatial data. Because the ion beam in the diffusion chamber is surrounded by ambient plasma, a retarding field energy analyzer (RFEA) is used to measure the flux of ions as a function of their energy, to separate the fast moving beam from the population of thermal background ions. A spatial map of the ion beam density can be obtained by sweeping the RFEA across the exit of the source tube at a number of different z{u00AC}axial positions, downstream of the double layer. As the ion beam travels into the diffusion chamber, a 5.70 {u00B1}0.4{u00B0} angle is observedbetween the ion beam reactor and the z-axis. This asymmetry has not before been observed in the largely cylindrically symmetric CHI KUNG reactor and the possible causes for this asymmetry are discussed. By introducing either one or two transverse solenoids to the CHI KUNG source region, asymmetric components of the magnetic field may be introduced and the resulting effect on the ion beam vector is observed. Experiments are broken up into two categories, with the effect of a single transverse solenoid initially investigated to demonstrate the phenomenon of magnetic steering in the HDLT. Subsequent experiments explore the use of an additional second transverse solenoid to better understand the magnetic steering phenomenon. The effect of varying the magnitude and polarity of the single transverse magnetic field (changing the solenoidal current) is observed to cause the ion beam to deflect away from the main axis (the z-axis), with larger transverse solenoidal currents resulting in greater angles of deflection. The direction of ion beam deviation is determined by the polarity of the transverse solenoid, with the ion beam deflecting in the direction of the transverse solenoid polarity. Deflection of the ion beam is measured up to -26.1{u00B0} {u00B1} 0.8{u00B0} and 13.5{u00B0} {u00B1} 0.7{u00B0} for single transverse solenoidal currents of 4 A north-out and 3 A north{u00AC}in, where north-out and north-in indicate the polarity of the transverse solenoid pointing in-to or out-of the source tube. Adding a second transverse solenoid, and orienting the two coaxial transverse solenoids in the same direction (in the negative x-direction) results in deflections of the ion beam for lower solenoidal currents. A current of 1.25 A flowing through both the transverse solenoids is observed to produce deflection of the ion beam up to 18.0{u00B0} {u00B1} 0.5{u00B0}, with the direction of deflection parallel to the transverse solenoidal polarity. By obtaining, for the first time, a spatial map of the ion beam downstream of a double layer in CHI KUNG, other properties of the ion beam can be obtained. The divergence of the ion beam is considered for a number of different measurement geometries and analyses, and reveals divergences similar to the more widely developed gridded ion engines. The experimental investigation of magnetic steering in the HDLT is uncommon in most electric thrusters, and the magnetic steering capabilities demonstrated in this thesis represent a significant advantage for the Helicon Double Layer Thruster as an alternative for electric propulsion missions.

Résumé :
AbstractConventional transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) coils are limited by the depth-focality tradeoff rule. To better utilize this depth-focality tradeoff rule, a new approach needs to be employed. In this study, a new multi-layer winding-tilted TMS coil design is proposed for human brain stimulation. It can deliver stimulation with better depth-focality characteristic than the double cone coils to deep brain regions. In our design, circular coils were accumulated along their central axis to improve the field decay rate as a function of the stimulation depth. We also tilted the winding angle of the coils to break the ring-shaped symmetry of the electric field distribution and accomplish the focality. New curves were plotted in the depth-focality tradeoff profile for our coil design, which intersected with the figure-8 coil curve. The new curves break the depth-focality tradeoff, and our coil design presents better focality than the H coils and circular coils, deeper stimulation depth than figure-8 coils, and the capability for multisite brain stimulation due to its unique structure and the limited contact area with the human head surface, which cannot be accomplished with the double cone coils.

Résumé :
The direct overwrite technology is one of the most important subjects for achieving a high data transfer rate for the magneto-optical recording system. Several overwrite technologies have been proposed [1]-[3]. The light power modulated overwriting was successfully reported by Saito et al. [2] using an exchange coupled double layer film. It is thought to be the most reliable direct overwrite method, however in addition to a conventinal bias magnet, it needs an initializing magnet which produces a large magnetic field. The initializing magnet makes the drive large and complicated. We have shown the exchange coupled RE-TM quadrilayered film is overwritable with light power modulation using no initializing magnet [4]. This method does not need the initializing magnet because the film has layers which play the same role as the initializing magnet

Résumé :
Direct overwriting using light intensity modulation can achieve a high data transfer rate on a double-sided disk. As far as the media is concerned the initializing field strength and the total thickness of the magnetic layer have been reduced by adopting the magnetic triple-layer structure1,2,3. On the other hand, though the system is said to be theoretically compatible with the conventional ISO system, there are some problems still unsolved. The way of initializing the disk is one of them. We have developed an external magnet assembly for a triple layer disk and investigated the feasibility of the direct overwriting system.

Résumé :
Magneto-optical disk systems have recently been put into the market, featuring large capacity of 600 MB on a double-sided 5.25 inch disk.1 However the system does not have a function of direct overwriting, i.e., erasing operation must be carried out before writing. There is an increasing demand for direct overwriting to obtain an effectively high data transfer rate. Various methods2 for achieving overwriting have been investigated, including the magnetic field modulation method3 and the light intensity modulation method.4 Two light intensity levels P U and P L are used in the light intensity modulation method. It has the advantages in terms of a high transfer rate and a wide magnet-disk spacing compared with the magnetic field modulation method. The light intensity modulated overwriting was successfully reported by Saito et. al.4 using an exchange-coupled double layer film.
