Résumé :
IntroductionFreezing of gait (FOG) in Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a disabling symptom of advanced PD and is frequently triggered upon passing through narrow spaces such as doorways.1 Despite being common, the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon are poorly understood. We have previously shown that increased footstep latency in a virtual reality (VR) environment is a surrogate measure of FOG.2 In this study we aimed to model doorway freezing utilising the VR paradigm in conjunction with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to determine the neural correlates of this phenomenon.MethodsIn our study, nineteen patients who routinely experience FOG performed a previously validated VR gait paradigm3 where they used foot-pedals to navigate a series of doorways. Patients underwent testing randomised between both their ‘ON’ and ‘OFF’ medication states. Task performance in conjunction with blood oxygenation level dependent signal changes were compared within each patient.ResultsWe were able to reproduce the finding that patients in the OFF state demonstrated significantly longer ‘footstep’ latencies as they passed through a doorway in the VR environment compared to the ON state. As seen clinically with FOG this locomotive delay was primarily triggered by narrow doorways rather than wide doorways. fMRI analysis revealed that doorway-provoked footstep delay was associated with selective hypoactivation in the pre-supplementary motor area (pSMA) bilaterally. Task-based functional connectivity analyses showed that this delay was inversely correlated with the degree of functional connectivity between the pSMA and the subthalamic nucleus (STN) across both hemispheres. Furthermore, increased frequency of prolonged footstep latency was associated with increased connectivity between the bilateral STN.ConclusionThese findings suggest that the effect of environmental cues on triggering FOG reflects a degree of impaired processing within the pSMA and disrupted signalling between the pSMA and STN, thus implicating the ‘hyperdirect’ pathway in the generation of this phenomenon.References. Abstract: Contactless Doorway Security System for Remote Monitoring and Control the usage of ESP32-CAM and a Cloud Server”. People need protection in every place viable while they’re into their houses or far from their houses. An anti-robbery device is a tool or approach used to save you or deter unauthorized intrusion or trespassing hobby in its insurance area. The carried-out device changed into evolved in a mixture of hardware and software. It’s a completely unique protection device made with low-value wi-fi digital digicam and sensors which ensured far-flung tracking and manipulate of doorways. The device empowered the consumer to screen the entrance by taking pictures of the usage of a high-performance wi-fi digital digicam i.e. ESP32-CAM connecting different gadgets and sensors in an IoT network. For different duties like manipulating digital door lock remotely, to click on greater pix, in addition, to get notifications a cloud server application „Blynk‟ changed into used over the clever-phone. Résumé :
The forum in this issue, reflecting on the problematics of the relationship between anthropology and law, as a timely focus is also indicative of how these debates revolve around disciplinary and cross-disciplinary issues. That such co-presence of anthropology and law, incorporating research in informal and formal settings, various kinds of collaboration and, in some instances, sceptical views about its value, continues to merit close attention also signals how views of differences animate a well-populated and extended field. The concerns are often articulated around an epistemic divide between anthropology and law, and allow for questioning both within and across disciplinary areas, even as much is made of the richness of an ethnographic approach to law alongside other methods and analyses, as indicated. Lawrence Rosen, in his response to the commentators in the forum, notes ‘our special area of interest is actually a great doorway into many key issues for both disciplines’, as he identifies the spaces where it is incumbent for anthropologists to act to address these cross-disciplinary challenges.

Résumé :
Above the entrance doorway at Carnasserie Castle in mid-Argyll there is a finely carved panel containing the coat of arms of Archibald Campbell, fifth Earl of Argyll, and his first wife, Lady Jean Stewart. Along the foot of the panel, in the script employed in Gaelic manuscripts, there is a motto which reads: ‘DIA LE UA NDUIBH[N]E’ or ‘God be with Ó Duibhne.’ The designation Ó Duibhne referred to the fifth Earl of Argyll as chief of Clan Campbell. The inscription and its setting provide a perfect illustration of the different cultures and traditions which the fifth Earl combined in his personal and public life and permitted him to be both a Protestant earl and a godly Gael. The short Gaelic phrase of the motto was the first post-Reformation inscription within the Gaidhealtachd or Gaelic-speaking area, which covered the Highlands and Islands of Scotland.

Smart Water Level Indicator The Water Level Indicator is beneficial to the public, especially to residents living in rivers. This technology can provide early warnings to residents when the water level is occupying a dangerous level and facilitates workers who control the dam of the river. This technology can alert early through sirens and notifications / messages via smartphones as well as to the river dashboard controllers capable of controlling water gates through their smartphones. The worker who controls the dam of this river no longer needs to go back to the dam's door control house to open the water dam door. Workers who are in charge of controlling dam need to stand in one place only to open their smartphones and control the dam's doorway using the fingertips. To the people living in the river, they do not have to worry about the floods that will happen in their area. They will get an early warning about the flood at any time even when they are sleeping. They will get the warning via notification on their smartphone and siren is places in a certain area to produce a loud noise so that residents can be prepared to face the disaster. It is expect that the Water Level Indicator is able to take a step further and can be use as best as possible and can help the local community

Résumé :
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the application of a profit and loss sharing approach to tax increment financing (TIF) districts in the USA. Design/methodology/approach A survey based on this approach was distributed to representatives of community redevelopment authorities (CRAs) in the State of Florida to ascertain practitioner feedback. Findings Although a majority of the respondents did not feel it was possible for political, economic and legal reasons, some did feel that it was a practical, reasonable and sustainable approach to financing projects for economic development. Some responses were correlated, with others indicating that certain beliefs framed their answers to the questions. Research limitations/implications The surveys were only distributed to CRAs in the State of Florida. Future research will need to include other CRAs in other states to make the findings more generalizable. In addition, the results are merely descriptive and are not an assessment of a successful application. Practical implications The need for more development in blighted areas of many cities across the USA will put emphasis on innovative approaches in financing this. The growth of Islamic finance in the USA and the regulatory framework for it might open a doorway for its application in this area. Originality/value This is the first attempt to apply an Islamic financing methodology to local economic development in the USA, with practitioner feedback.

Résumé :
The historical monuments in Iranian architecture are the proof of the rich and practical experience in creating successful architecture and urban planning collections aiming the sense of place. Considering proper distance between components and making appropriate volume combinations so-called joints are few experiences achieved through this context. This is a far-reaching and comprehensive topic that brings valuable lessons in various architecture and urbanism fields so it is necessary to focus more on this subject. Although collected and reliable research in this area does not exist, but a diffused remarks about the role and the effect of considering this issue in some author’s points of view can be found that have been used in this study.Using this concept allegorically in architecture may be practical in various ways so that one can refer to its different types in functional field of articulates such as access, indoor-outdoor, full and blank spaces, and constructional field in material and structural articulates .This research is aimed to study the connected and interstitial spaces especially the forecourt (the open area at the front of the doorway) in order to distinguish the interstitial spaces from other spaces. With the help of this research which the data collection method was through library and field, we can conclude that the forecourt is a sort of dialogue between the visitors and the monument and the monument to the monument itself which try to provide a proper platform to the audiences and visitors and, moreover, the amount of the ornaments and its elements is related to the social, economic and cultural situation of the residents.

Résumé :
This paper examines the immediate response behavior of Los Angeles County residents to the October 1, 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake. Drawing on both social science disaster research literature and occupant behavior studies, the authors consider various situational, demographic and socioeconomic variables as potential correlates of actions taken by individuals and families in response to the earthquake which measured 5.9 in magnitude. Survey data were obtained from 690 residents of the county, 191 in a pre-designated high impact area which included the City of Whittier and the immediate area and 499 persons selected at random from the remainder of the county. It was discovered that taking cover in a doorway, hall or under furniture was the modal response for people who were at home or work as was pulling to the side of the road and stopping for those driving on a road or highway. Among those who were at home at 7:42 a.m. when the earthquake struck, fear, the presence and identity of other people and gender were found to be associated with response actions. At work, response behavior was related to fear, ethnicity and the presence of others. The impact of fear on the propensity to take cover both at work and at home appeared to be amplified by several vuriables some of which had no significant bivariate relationship with taking cover. The authors conclude that the findings of this study are consistent with the generalization from the literature that behavior in a rapid onset disaster is controlled, rational and adaptive.

Résumé :
Intervertebral foramen is the doorway of nerve root and it plays an important role of radiculopathy and surgical treatment of intervertebral foramen diseases. The purpose of the study is to obtain three-dimensional (3D) morphological characteristics of lumbar intervertebral foramen and their relationship with age. Pedicle-superior articular process (P-SAP), disc height between adjacent vertebra (DH), pedicle-inferior vertebrae (P-IV), inferior posterior vertebrae-superior articular process (IPV-SAP), and bony boundary area (BBA) were measured in entrance, middle slice, and exit of lumbar intervertebral foramen for 25 males of different age groups. Spinous process to intervertebral foramen entrance (SP-IFE) was measured for 25 males of different age groups. Overall, P-SAP and P-IV decreased and IPV-SAP increased from the entrance to the exit of intervertebral foramen for L3/4-L5S1. DH decreased at entrance slice, middle slice, and exit slice for L3/4-L5S1 with age. Significant difference with aging was found only at the middle slice of L3/4 and L4/5 for P-SAP. And the significant decrease of IPV-SAP was observed at middle slice of L3/4, entrance slice of L4/5 and L5S1, and exit slice of L5S1. SP-IFE is not consistent for all subjects. In addition, the decrease of BBA at L3/4 and L4/5 was observed earlier than at L5S1. The present study described detailed information of intervertebral foramen, which may be of benefit for better understanding of the pathology and surgical planning for intervertebral foramen diseases.

BOSI, ROBERTO.

During his several trips to Europe, Louis I. Kahn registered the spatiality of ancient Mediterranean architectu- re on his travel journals, with as much precision as a seismometer would do. From an analysis of some of his relevant sketches from the rst journey (1928-1929) and the second one (1950-1951), it is clear that the cho- sen point of view is very signi cant for him. It allows him to establish a relationship between the architectu- re and the context, moving from the shade to the light to represent the connection between internal and external areas, as a doorway organized in a sequence of spaces, be they porches, openings or anything else. Louis I. Kahn had already dealt with the doorway theme in his juvenile project on Casa Weiss, where internal and external spaces were managed through a two-dimensional diaphragm. The doorway will then become a central theme in all his later projects, such as for the U.S. Consulate in Luanda, Angola, for the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California, for the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad and for both the Parliament and the Hospital in Dhaka. In these projects, the doorway is considered as a space on its own, encompassing the internal building with another building.

Odysseus’ blinding of the Cyclops by a combination of μῆτις‎ and βίη‎ continues the debate on the qualities needed for success initiated in the songs of Demodocus. The uncultivated Cyclopes reflect a reversed image of their relatives, the super-civilized Phaeacians. The mirror of the Cyclopeia simultaneously reflects the suitors (Model A) and Odysseus himself (Model B). In Model A, the suitors parallel the Cyclops as Odysseus’ adversary. No One is the false name by which Odysseus tricks the Cyclops: the suitors fear no one. Their consumption of Odysseus’ flocks and herds corresponds to the Cyclops’ consumption of Odysseus’ companions. Both they and the Cyclops are killed while under the influence of wine. In Model B, Odysseus returns, like the Cyclops, to find intruders consuming his resources. Odysseus confronts the suitors from the doorway of his hall in a near theophany parodied by the blinded Cyclops in his cave doorway.

Résumé :
Policy as Practice: A Guide for Music Educators explores how policy impacts the lives of teachers, arguing that policy participation can matter greatly to how educational experiences are constructed. Articulating a progressive view of policy and its intersection with music education, the book helps the reader to see how policy as a concept and practice has permeated the deepest recesses of civil society and has had particular impact on the lives of those who are actively connected to the educational process. Indeed, for teachers, policy often evokes images of a forbidden or alien environment; it has been seen as above their pay grade, beyond their duties and responsibilities, or outside the reach of their capacities. Nothing, however, could be further from the truth. Challenging these assumptions, the book serves as a guide to those interested in the potential of policy and concerned with rethinking its meaning. Just as critically, it aims to help music teachers understand policy more broadly while providing doorways into policy practice. The goal is not to add policy conceptualization and practice to the myriad other requirements that befall teachers today. Rather, the book aims to position policy thinking and practice as already part of what they do and value, providing tools for music educators to own their place as participants and contributors to the policy process. The book offers a measured argument, providing conceptual and research-based findings in balance with practical exemplification, strengthening music teachers’ impact within learning and professional communities.

In accordance with the main goals of this collection of essays in honour of Massimo Quaini, the text focuses on a peculiar character of the Ligurian geographer’s sensibility, his attention to landscape protectionresearch activity developed in the context of the humanistic geography. Starting from a personal narrative based on his own reminiscences and neglected memories, the author tries to shed light on the relationships between civil commitment and cultural reflection which characterize environmental sensitivity, bringing together his interests with Quaini’s emotional geographies. Finally, some of Quaini’s everyday practicalities are highlighted as the easiest doorway to improve the cognitive procedures of cultural geography.

Résumé :
MP3 players are often described as music collections in our pockets or the pocket jukebox. Indeed, it would seem that MP3 players have significantly transformed music collections, music collecting practices, and contemporary understandings of the music collection. The MP3 player may be used to store, retrieve, and reproduce digital music files, and, therefore, it can be described as a portal—if we define the term portal as an entrance, doorway, or gateway—into these simulated (Baudrillard, 1983) mobile music collections. It is an interface between the human body and archives of digitally compressed music. This can perhaps be understood as constituting a kind of musical cyborg, a cybernetic organism, a hybrid of human and machine (Haraway, 1991). The MP3 player, in this hybridised sense, is a gateway into the digital, virtual, or simulated (Baudrillard, 1983) material cultural realm of music, a mobilised cyber-collection. The question then is what becomes of the music collection and the music collector when music shifts from the objectified disc and spool to the digital compression format and MP3 player portal? And, what are the social and cultural implications of the MP3 player portal’s increasing pervasiveness and embeddedness in the flows of everyday life? The purpose of this article is to briefly introduce and discuss these questions alongside some of the technical details of the MP3 player. This article aims to use the material and technical details and definitions of the MP3 player to open up a range of possible questions that may be pursued in future research in this area. I will begin by defining the MP3 and the MP3 player.

Résumé :
The seemingly neutral and objective Federal Rules of Civil Procedure are permeated with doorways of discretion. These doorways grant judges nearly unreviewable discretion. At the same time, judges are acculturated within a society with deeply rooted and permeating racist ideologies, societal inequalities, and racial subordination, one in which prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination against people of color remain prevalent. Social psychological research reveals how these doorways of discretion intersect with the psychology of human decision-making to allow for prejudice against racial outsiders to emerge. These doorways of discretion interact with racializing societal and psychological processes in ways that lead to the legal construction and erasure of racism. When justifying their pretrial decisions, judges elaborate legal concepts based on their understandings of race, racism, and what counts as discrimination. These legal constructions frequently elide or erase the lived experience of marginalized groups and reproduce and amplify societal inequality that undermines racial outsiders.

There are remains of coarse plaster on the lower parts of the walls of this space and the pavement is of cocciopesto. The excavators removed disturbed volcanic material mixed with plaster, particularly from the south-east corner of this room. A breach in this corner, in the east wall, would have provided access through to room 8. Near the doorway in the south wall, leading to the front hall of this house, were found: an iron handle, probably from the door; a bronze knob terminal, conceivably from a large steelyard; a small travertine base; a storage jar; a clay loom weight; and a bronze fibula. This area has been identified as a shop or workshop. The limited finds conceivably bear witness to some commercial or industrial activity having been carried out here but they are equally domestic in character, as well as fragmentary and loseable. It is quite possible that any commercial or industrial activity which might once have taken place here had ceased prior to the eruption. The walls of this entranceway were decorated in the Second Style and the pavement was of lavapesta. Ling noted repaired damage to the walls of this entranceway, which he initially attributed to the ad 62 earthquake but he has since identified the repairs as modern. The excavators removed volcanic material mixed with plaster and roof tiles from this entranceway. The only finds recorded here seem to have fallen from the upper floor (see below). The walls of this ‘atrium’ were decorated in the Fourth Style which Elia and Ling have dated to after the ad 62 earthquake. The pavement continued that of the entranceway, in lavapesta. The excavators again noted that the volcanic deposit here presented constant signs of disturbance and that nothing was preserved of the stratigraphy. At the centre of this area is a cocciopesto impluvium (inside dimensions: 2.10 m × 1.77 m). A few, scattered, loose finds were recorded in the disturbed volcanic deposit which could conceivably have been from this space (see below). Even considering the finds from disturbed deposits, the paucity of contents here is comparable to the situation in the front hall of the Casa del Menandro but contrasts with that in many other front hall in Pompeian houses.

The surviving plaster on the walls of this entranceway consisted of a high pink socle, delineated in red, with a white zone above. Ling observed that this overlay an earlier First-Style decoration on the east wall and that it had been patched in antiquity. Breaches are found in both the east and west walls. Outside the entrance, to either side, is a masonry bench (east bench: l.: 2.1 m, d.: 380 mm; west bench: l.: 2.4 m, d.: 460 mm), both much damaged. Finds within the entranceway consisted of bronze and iron studs, undoubtedly from the house door. Remains of plastered decoration survive on the south wall. Elia recorded a yellow dado, surmounted by a red band, with white plaster above. There is a breach in the north-west corner through to Unit no. 9, above a blocked doorway. At the centre of this front hall is a tufa impluvium (2.4 m × 2.1 m). In the north-west corner, 1 m above the pavement, were found: a small bronze ring; a bronze stud, similar to those in the entranceway and probably also from the front door; a fragment of a stone mortar or hand-mill; some glass beads; a small shell; and two bronze quadrantes, one of Nero dated ad 64. The fragmentary or loseable nature of these items suggests that they were disturbed from the ground level. Other small loseable items were found in the north-east corner: a small glass bottle, probably a toilet item; and possibly five more coins. One metre from the west side of the impluvium were found: another part of a hand-mill; two large stone weights; at least fifty-three lead weights, probably from a loom; and two other spherical stones, possibly also weights. The large number of lead weights is comparable with the quantity found under the stairway in room i of the Casa del Principe di Napoli. Another comparable group of forty loom weights was found together in a pit at Zugmantel. As Jongman noted, this amount would be equivalent to that required for one or perhaps two warp-weighted looms. It is therefore commensurate with the existence of such a loom, or looms, in this area, or of replacement loom weights, for domestic use.

The conclusion explores the philosophical implications of ancient traditions overlapping with the current Mardi Gras Indian cultural system. Through many generations of interaction, different groups of people have learned to create new forms of language and music together. The simple ability to engage in active listening is a doorway to personal and collective transformation. Our ability to balbaha toba (a Choctaw verbal phrase defined as “become one who speaks a foreign language”) and share new forms of music reveal the possibility of experiencing intersubjectivity. Stepping outside of frozen notions of history requires the ability to understand time as both cyclical and linear, as it is sometimes impossible to tell apart what is new and what is old within cultural practices. The Muskogean origins and changing meanings of “Jockomo” in different contexts are an embodiment of the mysterious transformations which can take place whenever people learn to live and sing together.

Résumé :
Anton von Werner’s Im Etappenquartier vor Paris (In quarters before Paris) is based on a sketch done by the painter during the German military campaign against France in October 1870. German soldiers amuse themselves with songs at the piano in a requisitioned manor house near Paris (Brunoy). Attracted by the music, the French concierge and child appear in the doorway. Some mundane activities to further enhance the atmosphere are in progress: lamps are lighted and a fire is kindled in the fireplace. We even know the song that is performed: Schubert’s “Am Meer” (By the sea), with words by Heinrich Heine. Nothing yet anticipates the disillusioned statement of George Steiner that became characteristic of late-twentieth-century reflection on war and culture: “We know now that a man can read Goethe or Rilke in the evening, that he can play Bach and Schubert, and go to his day’s work at Auschwitz in the morning.” In Werner’s painting, war still seems to be an innocent affair that first of all produces mud-stained boots. These boots and the sphere of fraternization that even encompasses the French housekeeper were meant to evoke the impression of sincerity in German soldiers, according to a German art historian. Ultimately converted into a painting, the picture became really popular when it was sold on the German market as a small tapestry after 1895. As the German writer and critic Ludwig Pietsch wrote at the time, “[Such pictures show] the good-natured and sentimental nature of the national character [. . .] which even in the rough and wild times of war and in the midst of an irreconcilable enemy cannot be denied.” Not surprisingly, the French reading of this picture (once or twice on exhibition in Paris) is somewhat different: “The attitudes of the lumpish soldiers with their blusterous posture, their heavy mud-stained boots, are completely in contrast to the refinement of the furniture. The conquerors behave somewhat like vandals. At the right in the doorway, the maid, on whom an officer seems to have designs, watches the scene accompanied by her daughter, who is hardly able to hide her fear.”

Abstract Reading the transcripts of phenomenological interviews with voice-hearers, one is left with a composite image of dark, silhouetted ‘voices’, ‘mooching’ in doorways with holes for faces. They whisper, scold, and insult the voice-hearer, eroding their trust in themselves and their self-worth and, in several cases, persuading the voice-hearer to self-harm. These shadowy and dangerous figures are evocative of the demonic forms found in medieval saints’ lives and accounts of mystical experiences. But how can we ensure that the conversation between past and present moves beyond the small talk of similarities and differences towards a weightier, more mutually enhancing, even transformative conversation?

Résumé :
This paper presents the result of an evaluation program for the condition of the SEPTA Broad Street subway car shells and their capability to perform during an extended period of revenue service. SEPTA currently is evaluating various system upgrades to address equipment obsolescence and reliability, and wanted to verify that the current car shells are expected to be serviceable during this extended period. The evaluation focused on two aspects of the 1982-built car shells. First, what is the current and predicted condition of the shells and, second, how does the performance of the current car shell design compare to present day designs and requirements? Four sets of activities were done as part of this project. One-third of the fleet was randomly chosen for visual inspections. Service-induced cracks were identified at two locations: in ring welds below the doors, and on the side sill between the corner posts and the anti-climbers. The ring weld cracks have been identified on a small number of cars in the past, and SEPTA continues to monitor and reinforce these areas. The cracks between the corner posts and anticlimbers are also being monitored; to date, none of these cracks has progressed to the point that repair is required. In parallel with the visual inspections, the car shell camber and doorway dimensions were measured on approximately 10% of the fleet. All the measured vehicles had positive camber; doorway dimensions were uniform, except for scattered individual measurements that were car-specific. This part of the evaluation concluded that the car shells are not undergoing significant degradation or cracking. One car was instrumented with strain gauges in potential high-stress areas, and then operated at simulated full passenger-load weight over the Broad Street route. Cyclic strains imposed by simulated revenue service were measured and converted to stresses. This testing confirmed high stresses at the joint between the side sill and the body bolster. The lifetime limiting location on the car shells is in the ring welds below the doors, consistent with the results of the visual inspections. Using conservative assumptions of continuous full passenger loading and minimum material properties, the predicted lifetime to the initiation of visible cracks in this area is 7–14 years of service. This independent evaluation is consistent with the actual experience, and provided confidence in the analysis protocol. SEPTA is monitoring this location and repairing cracks as required. Evaluation of the car shell design with regard to performance in a collision revealed that, unlike most other cars of its era, the Broad Street car shell contains provisions to manage energy absorption during a low-speed collision. Records obtained from a car repair shop showed that, when a Broad Street car had a significant non-revenue end collision, these provisions worked as intended to localize the deformation. In similar collisions, the Broad Street car shell will not perform significantly different from cars built to current industry practices. Results from this study indicate that with continued attention to car shell condition, including regular inspections and limited repairs, the Broad Street car shells will continue to be safe and serviceable for an extended period.

Résumé :
A theory for ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy of large polyatomic molecules and molecular aggregates in condensed phases is developed. A multimode Brownian oscillator model is used to account for high frequency molecular vibrations, local intermolecular modes as well as collective solvent motions. A semiclassical picture is provided using the density matrix in Liouville space. The pump field creates a doorway state which propagates for a specified time interval, and the spectrum is calculated by finding its overlap with a window state, prepared by the probe pulse. The doorway and the window states are wavepackets in phase space. For high frequency modes and long pulses they are expanded in the vibronic eigenstates, whereas for low frequency modes and with impulsive pulses the Wigner (phase space) representation is more adequate. Conditions for the observation of quantum beats, spectral diffusion and solvation dynamics (dynamical Stokes shift) are specified.

Résumé :
Abstract A novel vehicle design for holonomic omnidirectional wheelchairs is presented in this paper. The new design allows the vehicle to change the shape of its footprint as well as to continuously vary the gear ratio of the drive mechanism. The variable footprint mechanism consists of a pair of beams intersecting at a pivotal point in the middle. Two pairs of ball wheels at the diagonal positions of the vehicle chassis are mounted, respectively, on the two beams. The angle between the two beams varies actively so that the ratio of the wheel base to the tread may change. Four independent servomotors driving the four ball wheels allow the vehicle to move in an arbitrary direction from an arbitrary configuration as well as to change the angle between the two beams and thereby change the footprint configuration. The objective of controlling the beam angle is threefold. One is to augment the static stability of the vehicle by varying the footprint so that the mass centroid of the vehicle may be kept within the footprint at all times. The second is to reduce the width of the vehicle when going through a narrow doorway. The third is to apparently change the transmission ratio relating the vehicle speed to individual actuator speeds. Required vehicle tasks are coordinated by the hierarchical control architecture. First the concept of the varying footprint mechanism is described briefly, then three control algorithms for varying the footprint are presented followed by the hierarchical control architecture for coordinating the different tasks. A proof of concept prototype wheelchair is designed, built, and tested.

Résumé :
Failures of natural gas transmission pipelines have occasionally occurred around the world. Ignited releases from ruptured high-pressure transmission pipelines produce a highly transient thermal radiation field in the initial stages, as described in papers presented at IPC previously. In the context of risk assessment, modeling the effects of fires on buildings is as important as modeling the thermal radiation field. A simplistic approach may not be appropriate, particularly when there is a significant difference in thermal radiation levels between the nearest and the furthest points of the building from the fire. It is necessary to consider the timescales involved, such as the timescale for fire spread through the building, for the evacuation of people and for the external thermal radiation field to decline. All of these factors need a modeling approach that is commensurate with other uncertainties in the risk analysis. The purpose of this paper is to describe a general modeling approach to assess the effects of transient fire loading on such large buildings. Illustrative examples are given for a large two-storey building and an apartment block. The effects of parameter variations, such as changes in the rate of flow of people through a doorway and the rate of progress of people from one floor to the next, are demonstrated. The results help to establish a method for evaluating the risk to occupants of large buildings. This can be used to support informed decisions on pipeline safety issues and in prioritizing integrity management programs on a risk basis.

Résumé :
Residential and commercial buildings account for more than 40% of U.S. energy consumption, most of which is related to heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). Consequently, energy conservation is important to building owners and to the economy generally. In this paper we describe a process under development to continuously evaluate a building’s heating and cooling energy performance in near real-time with a procedure we call Continuous Monitoring, Modeling, and Evaluation (CMME). The concept of CMME is to model the expected operation of a building energy system with actual weather and internal load data and then compare modeled energy consumption with actual energy consumption. For this paper we modeled two buildings on the Georgia Institute of Technology campus. After creating our building models, internal lighting loads and equipment plug-loads were collected through electrical sub-metering, while the building occupancy load was recorded using doorway mounted people counters. We also collected on site weather and solar radiation data. All internal loads were input into the models and simulated with the actual weather data. We evaluated the building’s overall performance by comparing the modeled heating and cooling energy consumption with the building’s actual heating and cooling energy consumption. Our results demonstrated generally acceptable energy performance for both buildings; nevertheless, certain specific energy inefficiencies were discovered and corrective actions are being taken. This experience shows that CMME is a practical procedure for improving the performance of actual well performing buildings. With improved techniques, we believe the CMME procedure could be fully automated and notify building owners in real-time of sub-optimal building performance.

Résumé :
When working with solid wood products, various ways of connecting parts are used, both in length, width and thickness, as well as connections in the structure. One of the most common ways to connect parts is considered to be a spike–groove connection. It is used to fasten the details of window frames, doorways, various furniture elements, and the walls of wooden boxes. The joint on the spikes has good mechanical strength, convenient to use. Spike joints in carpentry and carpentry were invented in order to create a strong bundle of two parts without the use of additional metal fasteners. Since the compound has been used for a long time, it is not surprising that it has been modified and improved. Today, there are several types of such fasteners. In the furniture and carpentry industry, where the reliability of the connection is necessary, it is most popular. But knowing such properties of wood as hygroscopicity, in some cases, during the operation of the product, when the operating conditions change (increasing or decreasing the temperature and humidity of the environment), the wood swells, or shrinks. This leads to the appearance of such defects as cracking, divergence of strips, the appearance of cracks. The method of connecting solid wood bars proposed in the article is relevant.

Résumé :
Majority of wheelchair users experience upper-body muscular weakness, resulting from neuromuscular diseases, which limit their ability to perform common activities of daily living. A Wheelchair Mounted Robotic Arm (WMRA) will assist these individuals to eat, drink, and move objects as needed. This paper presents the design of a new WMRA as well as the analysis of its function. The design is side-mounted onto either a normal or power wheelchair, and incorporates a slim profile to allow ease of passage through doorways and be otherwise unobtrusive. The arm is easily removable, with assistance, for storage or travel. The mechanical design utilizes a belt and pulley system for remote actuation of each joint, driven by DC Gearmotors located in the base of the arm. This helps to shift the weight closer to the wheelchair and to maintain the required speed, torque and inertia while actively driving each joint of the robot. The end-effector is a unique design, intended to have the adaptability to securely lift a large variety of objects. Grasping simulations were performed on several standard objects which might be encountered daily. Structural, kinematic and workspace analyses are conducted, and results confirm that the designed WMRA is rated to lift a 4 kg payload, while also having a reach of 1.3 meters long radius.

Résumé :
Abstract A special subset of pressures vessels are required to fully contain internal explosive blasts for commercial and government agencies conducting blast-related research and testing. In some cases these blast chambers must also safely contain the impact of high-speed fragments that may be created from cased munitions and devices. Both of these loading conditions require specific analysis methods, for example penetration mechanics and specialized dynamic finite element simulation. Careful attention must also be paid to the construction of these blast chambers, which typically utilize very thick steel plate, large forgings and pressings, and thorough weld procedure and inspection development. Beside the typical steel pressure vessel body, many ports are needed in such vessels, including those that house thick windows. These elements are typically the areas of highest stress concentration. Fatigue analysis is also conducted, using the predicted stress states, to ensure the pressure vessel will survive the required number of tests. Due to the potentially hazardous operation of the vessel, they must also undergo extensive post-construction proof testing to verify their safety and to validate the design/analysis approach. Methods to address the repetitive impulsive loading and fatigue failure are described in ASME BPVC Code Case 2564-5 Impulsively Loaded Pressure Vessels. An approach taken to satisfy those guidelines is described in this paper. Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has designed, constructed, and tested many blast chambers in the last 30 years. This paper discusses the specialized work needed for this class of vessel, including dynamic finite element analysis that accounts for shock pressure and quasi-static pressure. To illustrate the different steps specific examples are provided for key areas such as entry doorways and the viewports. Evaluation of internal shielding and transparency materials that must withstand impact are described. Example proof test methods are described and data obtained during recent projects will be included to demonstrate results.

Résumé :
Abstract A novel wheelchair moving platform with varying wheelbase and tread is designed and built. The width of wheelchairs for residential use is limited to the width of standard doorways which the wheelchair must go through. Yet the wheelchair must have an enough stability margin although the patient’s mass centroid may significantly change. In this paper, a new mechanism for varying the footprint of a four-wheeled omnidirectional wheelchair is presented. The chair is mounted on a moving platform with four ball wheels allowing for holonomic, omnidirectional motion. Two pairs of ball wheels at the diagonal positions of the chassis are fixed, respectively, to two beams that intersect at the pivotal point in the middle. The angle between the two beams crossing at the pivotal point is varied actively so that the ratio of the wheelbase to the tread can be varied. Four independent servomotors driving the four ball wheels allow the wheelchair to move along three axes, i.e. x, y, and ϕ, and change the footprint at the same time. The footprint configuration is controlled based on the measurement of the mass centroid position in such a way that the mass centroid can be kept within the footprint at all times. First the concept of the reconfigurable footprint mechanism is described, and its kinematic and static behavior is analyzed, followed by the control design for augmenting the vehicle stability. A prototype wheelchair platform is designed, built, and tested.

Résumé :
Convective air flows are a significant source of thermal loss from tubular cavity receivers in concentrating solar-thermal power (CSP) applications. Reduction in these losses is traditionally achieved by tailoring the cavity geometry, but the potential of this method is limited by the aperture size. The use of active airflow control, in the form of an air curtain, is an established practice to prevent infiltration of cold air through building doorways. Its application in reducing solar receiver convective heat loss is new. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are presented for the zero wind case, demonstrating that an optimised air curtain can readily reduce convective losses by more than 45%. A parametric investigation of jet direction and speed indicates that two distinct optimal air curtain flow structures exist. In the first, the jet reduces the size of the convective zone within the cavity by partially sealing the aperture. The optimum velocity range for this case occurs with a low strength jet. At higher jet speeds, the losses are generally set by the flow induced in the cavity and entrainment into the jet. However, a second optimal configuration is discovered for a narrow range of jet parameters, where the entrainment is reduced due to a shift in the stack neutral pressure level, allowing the jet to fully seal the cavity. A physical model is developed, based on the fluid physics of a jet and the ‘deflection modulus’ concept typically used to characterise air curtains in building heating and ventilation applications. The model has been applied to the solar thermal cavity case, and shows good agreement with the computational results.
