Résumé :
Tea is the most consumed beverages after water. In Terai and Dooars region of sub Himalayan West Bengal, India, tea plantations are around 150 years. Exploitation of tea garden soil over centuries has led to decline in soil fertility and crop productivity after all initiatives of external inputs. As nutrients play a crucial role in quality and quantity of manufactured tea, the present initiative has been designed to quantify the soil nutrient status of tea growing Terai and Dooars region. 79.62% (Terai) and 84.72% (Dooars) of the soil samples were found to have normal pH. 47.21% (Terai) and 49.3% (Dooars) of soil samples was found to have normal organic carbon. 12.03% and 20.82% of soil from Terai and Dooars showed low total nitrogen. Both the organic carbon and nitrogen in soil are positively correlated. Phosphorus (as P2O5) content of soil is extremely site and depth specific. Almost all samples of the study area showed high potassium (as K2O) content. Monoculture, change in rainfall pattern and inorganic additives have contributed enormous stress to soil but despite of all these odds the overall nutritional richness of these tea growing regions seems to be satisfactory.

Résumé :
Since the end of the nineteenth century, it has been found that there has been a steady trend of the closure of tea estates in the sub-Himalayan region of Bengal. Besides that, a number of tea estates in the same region have not been operating properly. All these have made workers vulnerable. But this tea-producing region is monadic, and it produced during 2016–2017 358.53 million kg of tea; whereas the total production of India was 1,250.49 million kg. Evidence shows that 16 tea estates of the Duncan Group alone had been virtually closed in 2015 in the Dooars region. As a consequence, nearly 20,000 workers became jobless and subsequently several workers of the closed tea estates died of starvation and malnutrition. Further, some records have mentioned that from 2000 to 2015, 1,400 people had died in 17 closed tea estates in West Bengal. A lion’s portion of deaths has occurred in the Dooars region. In this case, an attempt has been made to unveil the root causes of the closure of tea estates located in the Dooars region in West Bengal.

Résumé :
A small village named Murti is situated along the bank of river Murti in Dooars. The adjacent area of murti is rich in insect biodiversity. Knowledge on the diversity and the role of Orthopteran insects in tea ecosystem of West Bengal including Dooars and Terai is very scanty. Hemocytes are the chief immune cells of insects. The number and shape of hemocytes can change rapidly in response to environmental stress and pollution. Grasshopper (Orthoptera) species were collected from Murti and adjoining areas and from different agricultural fields of North 24 Parganas (West Bengal). Hemolymph was stained by Giemsa, and Neutral Red. Cellular morphology and phagocytosis was examined. Normal cell shape and behavioural activities like phagocytosis, cell-cell fusion was observed in insects collected from Murti, and adjoining areas of Dooars. But in case of insect hemocytes isolated from different agricultural fields of North 24 Parganas and its adjacent sites showed altered shape and different phases of cell death like degeneration of nuclei, formation of membrane blebs and rupture of plasma membrane. Toxic environmental pollutants may be responsible for alteration of hemocytes size and function which may effect on biodiversity. Hemocytes can be used as an effective bio-indicator by which the health of the ecosystem can be screened.

The Synergists Action of Piperonyl Butoxide on Toxicity of Certain Insecticides Applied AgainstHelopeltis TheivoraWaterhouse (Heteroptera: Miridae) in the Dooars Tea Plantations of North Bengal, IndiaHigher efficacy of mixture of insecticides with synergists piperonyl butoxide (PB) was reported in controlling in the Dooars population ofHelopeltis theivoraWaterhouse. Therefore, the use of synergists as one of the countermeasures against the insecticide resistance problem ofH. theivorais recommended. The combination of deltamethrin +PB (piperonyl butoxide), quinalphos +PB and imidacloprid +PB showed 44.60, 16.01 and 11.14 folds increase of toxicity (synergistic ratio) than the respective insecticide alone. Piperonyl butoxide acted as an oxidase inhibitor. The addition of PB to some extent suppressed the resistance ofH. theivorato these insecticides, suggesting that the P450 enzyme complex may be involved in the mechanism of toxicity.

Résumé :
<p>Revolving entrance doors - usually built as some kind of all glass structure - are part of many publicly accessible buildings. As the architectural demands rise regarding transparency and slenderness of façade members, the entrance doors have to and do go along with these demands. But even if the façade is designed carefully and verified according all relevant standards, the revolving doors are usually considered as a machine, coming with some certificate. This point of view is mostly shared by the manufacturer and the basis for the call for proposals. The certificates provided by the door manufacturer considers the electrical safety, the safety aspects for people handling and using the doors regarding the risk of persons being jammed or hit by the turning door leaves, but not the structural safety of the door system in means of resistance to live, dead, wind or earthquake loads. If we look at the design and verification effort made for standard façade elements, even windows on the one hand, and the different failure consequences for windows and revolving doors on the other hand, it becomes obvious that especially to non-standard and large-scale doors should be paid some attention regarding its structural safety. Below the legal situation of revolving doors is considered in the European context and two quite different examples of revolving doors are discussed regarding their structural assessment.</p>

Résumé :
This paper presents a real-world application of Root Cause Analysis methods that were applied to analyze and resolve a side door problem that was occurring on a particular fleet of coach cars operated by Amtrak. The foundation of a Root Cause Analysis program is a disciplined engineering process designed to identify physical, human and latent roots of chronic or sporadic problems. This paper presents the engineering challenges encountered while conducting root cause analysis of a complex coach car side doors problem. The coach car side doors system exhibited undesirable characteristics when in service. Mechanical staff received multiple reports that during station stops all of the open side doors would unexpectedly close even though the train speed was at zero. During this unexpected side door closing sequence all of the obstacle detection systems were disabled presenting a potential hazard to the traveling public. The side doors Root Cause Analysis team found the Physical Root cause of failure to be located in the door system software code — a finding that was never suspected following years of trouble with the side doors. As a result of this finding, the door manufacturer corrected the software and issued revised software to be installed fleet-wide. The Human and Latent Root causes were addressed through the development of a standard operating procedure and training for conductors and crew on the proper operation of side doors. The Root Cause Analysis method proved to be a powerful and productive process for achieving a solution to a chronic passenger side door problem.

Résumé :
On March 26, 2004, a six-year-old boy ran into an automatic revolving door when it was about to close. The door caught the boy’s head and killed him. The accident immediately caught the attention of mass media, police, government, and the people. Amidst all the opinions and talks about how dangerous these automatic revolving doors are and how safety measures should be installed, we organized a group of volunteers to analyze the dynamics of the accident to measure the forces, door velocity, acceleration, and if available, the driving current and voltage of the motors. The group not only studied the same door that caused the fatal accident but it also ran the same series of tests on a smaller size power-assisted revolving door, an automatic sliding door, an elevator door, a building shutter, a commuter train door, a bullet train door, an automatic sliding door on an automobile, and its power window. With the safety mechanisms disabled, we measured an impact force of 548kgf on a dummy head of a 3-year old when it was jammed between the revolving door edge and the door frame. The human scull of a child crushes at only 100kgf and our results show that in addition to this large automatic revolving door, the smaller size power-assisted revolving door, the shutter, and manually closing automobile doors generate forces that exceed this limit. These doors inherit the danger of causing fatal accidents.

Résumé :
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Side doors are pivotal components of any vehicle, not only for their aesthetic and safety aspects but also due to their direct interaction with customers. Therefore, ensuring good structural performance of side doors is crucial, especially under various loading conditions during vehicle use. Among the vital performance criteria for door design, torsional stiffness plays an important role in ensuring an adequate life cycle of door. This paper focuses on investigating the impact of several door structural parameters on the torsional stiffness of side doors. These parameters include the positioning of the latch, the number of door side hinge mounting points on doors (single or double bolt), and the design of door inner panel with or without Tailor Welded Blank (TWB) construction. The findings of this study reveal that the change in latch position has the most significant influence on torsional stiffness, followed by the removal of TWB from the inner panel, upon implementation of suitable local hinge reinforcements in TWB removed design, torsional stiffness enhances significantly. While decreasing the number of hinge mountings from a double bolt to a single bolt configuration does affect torsional stiffness, it has the least impact among these three parameters. All these parameters are very useful from vehicle architectural, weight optimization and assembly process aspects and consideration of same would lead to optimized door design with less weight and cost.</div></div>

Résumé :
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">The side-door operation of vehicle is vital to the customer, as it reflects the overall build quality of the vehicle. The side door check arm is one of the primary components that determine the operating characteristics of a vehicle door. The profile of the check arm has a significant impact on the closing effort of side doors. In this study, the check arm profiles are analyzed virtually in relation to the side door's closing velocity. A virtual door model was developed in ADAMS to simulate the side door closing and opening. The study involves a check arm that guides the ball spring mechanism housing unit over the guide profile. Typically, a check-arm guide profile has two or three indents at a specific location which serves to maintain the door open in those positions. When a door enters an indent, the user must exert an effort to traverse it. Furthermore, the slope profile of the check arm defines the self-closing assist offered from the initial indent to the latching position. By modifying this slope profile, the velocity of self-closing assist is optimized. Multiple iterations on this slope profile of the check arm are examined. The study revealed that the acute slope profile depicted by a brachistochrone curve provides better door closing velocity in check-arm. This study concludes that the slope profile of the check-arm can be optimized and defined for the maximum assist in door self-closing. It was demonstrated that the complete profile of the side door check arm can be designed and optimized to accomplish the desired door closing velocity.</div></div>

Résumé :
With the impact of increased fire resistance requirements that NAVSEA is invoking on ship programs, and the lack of structural doors (i.e., watertight) that are also fire resistant, the industry can benefit from having a compliant option for structural doors that maintains the required internal shipboard fire zone boundaries using only one structural door. Currently using either legacy Navy standard watertight single doors or the new standardized family of watertight single doors tested for pressure and shock qualification during the prior NSRP project, would require installation of two doors in close proximity to one another at fire zone boundaries. One that serves as a fire barrier and the other serving to maintain watertight integrity, or some other mitigating design. A fire resistant watertight door design will reduce the area and volume penalty to ship designs compared to alternate methods and will reduce the ship cost due to having fewer doors to purchase and install. Upon incorporation in a revised Navy standard drawing, these drawings are expected to be invoked on current and future shipbuilding contracts, which will provide a strong basis for widespread implementation after the project is completed.

Résumé :
Existing thermal condition and indoor air quality have a big impact on our work performance, comfort, and health in an indoor environment. Apart from many other parameters, door motions and human movements play crucial role in mass and thermal exchange affecting safety and/or energy management issues in various situations. An isolation room in a hospital setup, for instance, helps to protect patients and staff against the risk of infection by airborne pathogens. Another example is cold storage room facilities, where temperature and moisture control are the key parameters for an optimal operation and energy usage. In this study, we present a transient flow analysis of door motions in indoor environment. The flow physics is resolved by solving 3D compressible RANS (Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) equations together with the energy and species transport equations and two-equation turbulence models utilizing an overset mesh strategy to address the rigid body motion of doors in a relevant fluid domain involving air and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). Simulations are performed for three different types of doors, namely a hinged door, a two-way sliding door, and a sliding door considering door opening and closing phases. Transient flow-field data through the door opening area have been processed and a comparative analysis is performed considering the mass flux of the constituents, normal velocity, cumulative mass exchange through the different doors.

Résumé :
Among other types of wagons, Ferrominera Orinoco Company uses 350 hopper type wagons for ore transportation. Each of these wagons has a mechanical linkage system, made up of nine mobile elements plus a frame to open and close two rotary discharge doors located at the bottom of the wagons. This paper presents the influence of clearances in the kinematic pairs of the operating mechanism for a tight sealing of the doors. For this purpose, a new mathematical model is developed to show how the positioning error of the doors — from its theoretical fully closed position — may be controlled via an adequate assignment of the clearances in the kinematic pairs. The results show that the positioning errors of each door due to clearances are independent from one another and may be obtained by modelling the kinematic cycle comprising each door as an equivalent five degree of freedom linkage as to obtain the maximum possible error of each door according to the combination of clearances in the kinematic pairs. This way, the most appropriate normalized fit may be assigned in order to limit a maximum positioning output error of each door.

Résumé :
This report summarizes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) geometries using the SU2 Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) solver. Geometries were generated based on the Smart Transportation Infrastructure Initiative (STII) Rappor 15th iteration with various rotor-installment solutions. It was found that although open rotors installed on an underwing pylon were superior to shrouded rotors installed in a canoe, the canoe configuration would provide more potential for improvement, and using a canoe door to cover the first rotor opening would reduce the drag experienced by the canoe case below that upon the rod case. Rotor doors were found to be most efficient in reducing drag of the canoe case: Average drag reduction with covering the first rotor and all rotors was 66 and 165 counts, respectively. Changing rotor distributions along the chordwise direction had minimal impact on drag reduction, and placing rotors along the spanwise direction was not advised due to the increase of the projected frontal area. Increasing canoe chord length did not have significant impact on drag reduction; and if rotor doors were implemented, increasing canoe size had negative impact on drag. Rounding rotor edges did not change the aerodynamic performance of the canoe case but promotes vertical air intake when running lifting fans. Drag received by the canoe parabolically correlated to rotor diameter, with 126 counts of drag if the rotor diameter was 0 and 377 counts if the rotor diameter was 2.95 ft. Fuselage and tail added an average 179 counts of drag, and thus the aforementioned differences were still significant in the scale of aerodynamic properties of the full configuration.
