Resumen En el presente texto, se analizará la representación de las diversas maneras de luchar por el bien de la res publica en Los españoles en Flandes, vinculándolas con el uso de la metáfora del matrimonio moral y político entre el rey y la república en España, a comienzos del reino de Felipe III. Se argüirá que, mediante la conducta ideal de Juan de Austria, quién restablece el ‘matrimonio’ de la Corona con Flandes, roto por los rebeldes, Lope representa un modelo de una perfecta privanza y de una relación justa entre el rey –o su lugarteniente– y su república, posiblemente para reaccionar a tendencias ‘republicanas’ en su país.

This study examines Cervantes’ subtle, ironic satire in Don Quijote Part II, aimed at three works of Lope de Vega: an auto, an entremés, and a play highly praised in Avellaneda's Don Quijote. Lope's entremés is satirized in the episode of Maese Pedro's “Retablo de Melisendra” (II, 26), in which the narrating trujamán is actually Cervantes’ mouthpiece. My hypothesis is that three authors fathered the apocryphal Quijote printed in the Barcelona printing shop that Don Quijote and Sancho visited (II, 63). The puppet show reveals their identity by allusion and symbolic metaphor. They were Jerónimo de Pasamonte, Lope de Vega, and the man who paid for the edition: either the Conde de Lemos, or the publisher Sebastián de Cormellas himself.

In this article we summarize in what consists the presence of the Spanish Literature of the Baroque in Serbian Literature and Culture. We mention the three most important authors who have left the deepest mark (Cervantes, Lope and Calderón) and draw a list of their works ―translated, adapted, studied and / or represented in the Serbian stages. We also refer to the influence exercised by these authors in our Literature from the beginning of their reception (XVIII century) to the present day (Don Quixote in the first place, in the narrative, in children's literature, in the language and culture in general). We show that the dramas and comedies of Lope and Calderón have a history of premieres in our country that last almost 150 years. Don Quixote, Don Juan and Segismundo have become myths and are now part of the Serbian culture.

RESUMEN: La novena epístola de La Filomena, dedicada a don Juan de Arguijo, posee una particular importancia dentro del corpus que integra no sólo por la posición destacada que ocupa como última pieza del epistolario escrita por Lope, sino también porque en ella se condensan una serie de sentidos poéticos y metapoéticos que atraviesan el volumen misceláneo del que forma parte. El presente artículo se propone examinar algunos procedimientos mediante los cuales la estructura de esta composición entra en diálogo con la materia que trata, contribuyendo a construir la imagen de poeta culto que Lope está bogando por forjarse durante esta época. ABSTRACT: The epistle dedicated to Juan de Arguijo in Lope´s La Filomena has a particular importance not only because it is the last epistle of the volumen written by Lope, but also because it summarizes several poetic and metapoetic meanings. This article aims to explore some structural and theme procedures whereby the text builds the cultivated poet image Lope was looking forward to create for himself.

La novela anónima medieval francesa Histoirc de Valentin et Orson, la obra española Ursón y Valentin, hijos del Rey de Francia, comedia de Lope de Vega, y los romances «Don Claudio y Doña Margarita» tienen un origen folklórico común: el cuento popular «Juan el Oso» (cuento-tipo AT 3016). Se realiza un análisis comparativo de versiones literarias y orales.

Este trabajo plantea un recorrido por las aportaciones de distintos estudiosos del teatro español del siglo XVI desde la plataforma investigadora del Boletín de la Biblioteca Menéndez Pelayo a lo largo de los cien primeros años de su historia. Dada la relevancia que el estudio del primer teatro castellano tuvo en los trabajos de don Marcelino, y la necesidad de tomarlos como punto de partida para cualquier revisión de los distintos aspectos implicados, no es extraño que los estudiosos del asunto sientan casi la obligación de rendirle tributo desde las páginas de la revista que lleva su nombre y difunde su legado y publicaran en la revista importantes aportaciones críticas. El recorrido permite describir un entramado de relaciones y trazar un mapa de los intereses investigadores en torno al teatro del siglo XVI; y también comprobar la prevalencia de un planteamiento de los estudios del teatro que privilegia el texto teatral frente a otras circunstancias relacionadas con aspectos del espectáculo o de la complejidad del hecho teatral.

Las investigaciones llevadas a cabo por el cabildo de Zamora en 2010 permitieron descubrir dos sepulcros de principios del siglo XV que habían sido tapiados en el siglo XVII. Decorados con relieves y con pinturas murales, fueron recuperados y restaurados en 2011-12 y suponen una importante aportación al corpus del arte sepulcral castellano de la Baja Edad Media. El de don Lope Rodríguez de Olivares muestra un relieve de la Transfiguración, mientras que el de don Alfonso García, muestra una pintura mural de la Misa de san Gregorio, notable por ser la más antigua representación de este tema documentada hasta la fecha en la Corona de Castilla.

Abstract: Lope’s theater is famously playful, featuring a whole series of ludic devices that, dramatically at least, tend to privilege subjectivity and imagination over hard-headed adherence to social norms and the body of customs. This article, remembering Don Larson’s playful nature and his own deep-rooted interest in processes of extension and transformation, examines the translational implications of Lope’s ludic imagination.

Se editan y estudian dos poemas recogidos en el ms. ε 32.3.4 de la Biblioteca Estense Universitaria de Módena. El primero es una epístola del doctor Gregorio de Angulo a su amigo Lope de Vega, fechada el 31 de enero de 1597. En ella le hace algunas observaciones sobre La bella malmaridada y otras cuestiones literarias, si bien resulta más interesante como muestra de la profunda amistad que existió entre ambos. El segundo es una elegía de Lope de Vega a la muerte de doña Catalina de Ribera, identificada como la madre de quien por entonces era su señor, don Francisco Barroso de Ribera. Datable hacia la primavera o el verano de 1590, es una de las pocas muestras (si no la única) de su labor poética al servicio del futuro II marqués de Malpica.

El presente artículo contiene una discusión detallada de los hechos anteriores a la redacción de la Instrucción al licenciado don Lope García de Castro (1570). Reconsidera los acontecimientos históricos y las maniobras políticas que llevaron a la elaboración de dicho texto con el propósito de identificar los posibles intereses y motivaciones por los que fue redactado y los objetivos que se perseguían con el mismo. Además, el presente artículo incluye una tabla cronológica de la documentación disponible sobre el tema.

The reader is offered an extensive overview of the 10th- to 20th-c. Spanish and Latin American literature. The book considers not only preeminent authors like Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Márquez, and Cortázar, but also those known only to scholars — like R. Llull, J. de Espronceda, and J. Valera. Thanks to the author’s impressive cultural erudition, the book demonstrates the numerous comparative connections of Spanish-speaking writers with world literature. Thus, without Cervantes’ Don Quixote, neither Dostoevsky, nor Cortázar, nor Márquez would have written their novels. A Russian reader will be especially interested in Russo-Spanish connections, as their study is also included in the scope of Bagno’s research. In this regard, particularly interesting is the analysis of Lope de Vega’s play about False Dmitry I El Gran Duque de Moscovia. Another exciting topic discussed in the book is the story of Spaniards who developed strong ties to Russia, like Odessa’s founder J. de Ribas and the Spanish ambassador in the 19th-c. Petersburg J. Valera.

El lienzo La Sagrada Familia con San Juanito está en la capilla de San José de la antigua Colegiata de Santa María de los Reales Alcázares de Úbeda, al menos desde principios del XVII. El canónigo de la colegiata, don Lope Molina Valenzuela, lo adquirió posiblemente a finales de los setenta del s. XVI en Bolonia, donde había estudiado y pudo conocer a su autor Denys Calvaert. También sabemos que Juan Esteban de Medina realizó una copia en 1634 conservada en el Museo de Bellas Artes de Granada.

El artículo plantea la problemática que gira en torno a Próspera y Adversa fortuna de don Álvaro de Luna, que comprende tanto los errores de atribución de la obra como los conflictos que pareció tener con la censura, y que da lugar a un enredo bibliográfico en el que se ven envueltos nada menos que cuatro autores: Tirso de Molina, Mira de Amescua, Lope de Vega y Salucio del Poyo. Asimismo, ofrece un breve estado de la cuestión acerca de la situación actual del teatro de Mira tras ser analizado por la herramienta digital de la Estilometría, que lo convierte en el dramaturgo áureo más afectado por los problemas de atribución.

La Dorotea de Lope de Vega se caracteriza por concitar la atención de estudios provenientes de los más diversos enfoques críticos; objeto de debate, de análisis y de polémicas, la obra del Fénix se resiste a clasificaciones determinantes y se rebela ante categorizaciones conclusivas esgrimiendo una matriz estructural que integra teatralidad, autobiografía, poesía y tradición celestinesca. En esta ocasión nos detendremos en el personaje de Laurencio, en la construcción de los roles que desempeña, en las relaciones que entabla con los personajes de Don Bela y Gerarda y en las funciones dramáticas que le fueron asignadas.

<p>En este estudio profundizo, a partir de lo que señala Lope de Vega y testimonios de la época de Felipe III, en la identidad real de la Diana de Jorge de Montemayor. Se trata de Ana Muñiz, natural de Valencia de Don Juan. Sitúo también a su esposo, Francisco de Valencia Colodro (Delio en la obra). A partir de diversos documentos que he localizado en la Real Chancillería de Valladolid, afirmo que Montemayor tiene razón en lo que sobre ellos expresa en su novela. Identifico a Sireno con Jorge de Montemayor, así como a los personajes de Duarda y Danteo y concluyo con una idea fundamental: debajo del disfraz pastoril se encuentran personas reales de aquella época.</p><p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p><p>In this study I deepen, from what Lope de Vega points out and testimonies of the time of Felipe III, in the real identity of the Diana of Jorge de Montemayor. This is Ana Muñiz, born in Valencia in Don Juan. I also place her husband, Francisco de Valencia Colodro (Delio in the work). From various documents that I have located in the Royal Chancery of Valladolid I discover that Montemayor is right in what he expresses about them in his work. I identify Sireno with Jorge de Montemayor, as well as the characters of Duarda and Danteo. And I conclude with a fundamental idea: under the shepherd's disguise there are real people from that time.</p><p> </p>

La presente nota ofrece varios documentos de archivo que revelan que la mayor parte del Tercio de Lope de Figueroa permaneció en las costas de Sicilia en la segunda campaña que don Juan de Austria dirigió contra los turcos en Levante. El análisis contrastivo de las relaciones que dan cuenta de las compañías de infantería española que quedaron en Sicilia y de aquellas que participaron en las expediciones de Morea desvela que Miguel de Cervantes, soldado de la compañía de Manuel Ponce de León en 1572, no pudo hallarse en las empresas de Navarino y de Modón, lo cual supone negar la propia palabra cervantina.

In 1936 Joan Littlewood staged Lope de Vega's seventeenth-century play, Fuente Ovejuna (The Sheep Well); in 1945 Lorca's The Love of Don Perlimplín for Belisa in His Garden; and in 1958 Fernando de Rojas's sixteenth-century La Celestina. There were also plans to produce Lorca's Blood Wedding in 1948. The English versions of Fuente Ovejuna, Don Perlimplín, and Blood Wedding have been preserved in the Theatre Workshop archive at Littlewood's former base, the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, and in the following article Gwynne Edwards compares these translations with the original Spanish plays, considers the changes which were introduced in the process of adaptation, and assesses the merits of each. Gwynne Edwards is a specialist in Spanish theatre. Eleven of his translations of the plays of Lorca, as well as translations of seventeenth-century Spanish and modern Latin American plays, have been published by Methuen, and many have been given professional productions. He has recently completed the libretto of an opera on the last days of Dylan Thomas.

El dramaturgo, de cara a la representación de la obra en un espacio nobiliario, para no aludir burlescamente al noble don Julio de Aragón, enamorado sin esperanzas de Serafina, prefiere atribuir las características risibles del galán suelto a los pretendientes burlescos de Lucrecia: el escudero Marín (proto-figurón) y el jardinero Gonzalo (figura del donaire).

Abstract Influenced by feminist perspectives on urban and architectural studies, this essay examines the relationship between premodern Muslim urbanism and gendered relations, an issue that has received little attention in Hispanic cultural studies to date. This discussion will center on two particular features of domestic architecture and city planning typical of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Algiers: the location and nature of street-facing windows and the communicable rooftops. Focusing primarily on Christian writers such as Antonio de Sosa, Miguel de Cervantes, and Lope de Vega, Velasco explores how their accounts document the ways in which women in Algiers could find unexpected and illicit ways of turning the high windows and the communicable rooftops to their advantage. Despite the constraints presented by an urban design and domestic architecture intended to segregate the sexes and control behavior, women in early modern Algiers (many of whom were recent immigrants from Spain) found ways to utilize their built environment to observe and navigate the world around them, gain access to a public domain commonly reserved for men, and sustain networks with other women in ways that might bypass traditional spatial, social, and personal restrictions and limitations. Through female-only gatherings and other forms of camaraderie that made use of traditional Islamic urbanism, Muslim women in Algiers found ways to challenge long-standing dichotomies of male/female, public/private, interior/exterior, visible/hidden, and chaste/lustful.

The article provides an analysis of the “Spanish code” inscribed in the text of Lesia Ukrainka’s drama Kaminnyi hospodar (The Stone Host). The constituents of the code include: 1) conventions of 17th century Spanish baroque drama, in particular, use of the dialectics of the concepts of dignity and reputation as a driving mechanism for confl ict throughout Lesia Ukrainka’s play and transformation within the classical scheme of characters suggested by Lope de Vega and his followers; 2) stereotypes of “Spanishness” through which the playwright produced a heteroimage of Spain. Lesia Ukrainka’s variant of the famous legend of Don Juan is a sophisticated modernist drama. The “Spanish code” serves as a prism through which the playwright examines the world. Lesia Ukrainka created an astonishing modernist tragicomedy of dishonesty, full of the spirit of uncertainty.

El artículo presenta dos documentos que reflejan la animadversión de Paravicino y Calderón: El Memorial de Paravicino contra Calderón y El Parecer del Cardenal de Trejo. El Memorial y el Parecer resultan interesantes por varios motivos. En primer lugar, permiten deducir el día del estreno de El príncipe constante. Además, Paravicino incluyó algunos datos personales aparte de información acerca de la obra. Por último, gracias a la queja del trinitario se conocen los versos ofensivos que escribió Calderón y que de otra manera no se habrían transmitido. Este texto permite también aproximarse a la figura de fray Hortensio y su posición en el mundo literario de su tiempo, y desliza algunos detalles sobre personajes como Lope de Vega, Pedro de Vargas Machuca, don Gaspar de Bracamonte y fray Antonio Pérez.

En el presente trabajo se estudia la promoción artística del arzobispo don Lope de Mendoza (1400-1445) en dos de las villas costeras más destacadas de la Tierra de Santiago: Muros y Noia. Se ha dejado de lado el patronazgo episcopal en la propia Compostela y Padrón por haber sido tratado por la historiografía, optando por abordar conjuntos monumentales que sirvieron al prelado como refrendo del apoyo prestado a los florecientes puertos arzobispales y nuevos linajes urbanos que ocupaban sus oficios concejiles, así como su amparo y cuidado de los peregrinos al sepulcro apostólico. Pero ante todo el análisis planteado desde esta óptica hacia ejemplos tan destacados como Santa María do Campo de Muros o San Martín de Noia nos permite obtener esa pretendida imagen del poder, prestigio y sentido piadoso del que pasa por ser uno de los mitrados más destacados de la Baja Edad Media compostelana e hispana.

Recién salida de las planchas de impresión nos llega una edición de la comedia inédita de José Luis Alonso de Santos que lleva un título tan sugerente como enigmático, El demonio, el mundo y mi carne editada por Abraham Madroñal. La yuxtaposición de los términos que componen el título le ofrece al lector una idea de las principales líneas argumentales de una comedia que cierra una trilogía compuesta por otras dos obras, ¡Viva el duque, nuestro dueño! y El combate de Don Carnal y Doña Cuaresma, cuyo vínculo son unos cómicos ambulantes del siglo de Oro dirigidos por un tal Lope. Con esta trilogía, tal y como apunta Abraham Madroñal, pretende el autor dar una visión sobre los inicios del teatro itinerante en nuestro país. En el caso esta obra se describen las peripecias de estos cómicos que son contratados para que representen en una prisión un auto sacramental, el Auto de la muerte, en el escenario barroco de la capilla del presidio.

In the course of her long career as a director with Theatre Union and Theatre Workshop, Joan Littlewood staged some twenty foreign-language plays, of which three were Spanish: Lope de Vega's Fuente Ovejuna, Lorca's The Love of Don Perlimplín for Belisa in His Garden, and Fernando de Rojas's La Celestina, while there were also plans to perform Lorca's Blood Wedding. Gwynne Edwards argues in this article that Littlewood's attraction to the Spanish plays was sometimes political but always due to a similarity in performance style which, influenced by the methods of leading European theatre practitioners, sought to integrate the elements of speech, stage design, movement, music, and lighting into a harmonious whole. Indeed, even though Lorca and Littlewood worked independently of each other, their ideas on the nature and function of theatre were very similar, while Lorca's touring company, La Barraca, employed methods very close to those of Theatre Union and Theatre Workshop. Gwynne Edwards was until recently Professor of Spanish at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and is a specialist in Spanish theatre. Eleven of his translations of the plays of Lorca have been published by Methuen Drama, as well as translations of seventeenth-century Spanish and modern Latin American plays. Many of these have also had professional productions.

A bronze portrait of a child (figs. 1-4) belonging to the category of “small format” portraits is preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Badajoz (inv. no. 4471). It was found in 1970 in excavations conducted by J. M. Peralta y Sosa on a farm in the Vega del Ortiga, an area east of Medellín in the territory between that town and Don Benito (Lusitania), some 35 km from Mérida (Augusta Emerita). In the excavated area of 40 m2 (fig. 5) were two cisterns and a rectangular well, at the bottom of which was the bronze portrait. The N cistern measured 3.8 x 1.25 m. Attached to its E side was a rectangular (80 x 60 cm) well. A channel in the centre of the S wall of the well was connected to a square (3.45 x 2.9 m) cistern. From its W wall a drain leads into a channel towards the Ortiga river, which flows by some 50 m away. On the E side of the excavation area were two identical column bases which could have belonged to a peristyle. One is a square (90 x 80 cm) block preserving traces of a column shaft 65 cm in diameter, while the other, 3 m to the north, retains the beginning of the shaft. From this point a wall (45 cm thick) faced with stucco starts to head north. The pottery found during the excavation included Arretine, South Gaulish and thin-walled wares belonging to the first quarter of the 1st c. A.D. The site appears to have been part of a Roman villa.

The Fundación Siglo de Oro –formerly Compañía Rakatá– has been staging Spanish Golden Age and Elizabethan theatre since it was founded in 2006. Over this time, the company has developed an identity associated not only with its staging of early modern drama, but also with the influence of a series of contemporary British theatre practitioners on its rehearsal process. Perhaps one of the most noteworthy constants in its work is a fruitful series of collaborations with British stage directors, beginning in 2007 with Laurence Boswell directing El perro del hortelano (revived in 2014), in 2009 Fuenteovejuna, and in 2015 co-directing Mujeres y criados with company founder and producer Rodrigo Arribas. While, at first, we can ascribe this collaboration to the impact of the Royal Shakespeare Company Golden Age season, curated by Boswell, which visited Madrid’s emblematic Teatro Español in 2004, the company have continued to seek out British directors including Tim Hoare on Don Juan en Alcalá (2016) and Trabajos de amor perdidos (2016), and most recently Dominic Dromgoole on a new production of El perro del hortelano (2021). This latter partnership is also the culmination of a collaboration with Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre which saw the company take part in the Cultural Olympiad with Enrique VIII (2012) and become the first company to perform Lope de Vega in Spanish at the London theatre, with El castigo sin venganza (2014). There has therefore been a clear exchange of ideas between Spanish classical theatre and contemporary British theatre practice. This article proposes to explore the methodological contributions of British directors to better understand how this has altered the in-rehearsal perspectives on the Spanish Golden Age to explain the benefits of this Anglo-Hispanic collaborative approach to the company’s work. This will be supported by an interview with Rodrigo Arribas, whose constant presence as founder, producer, actor and most recently as director can help us to understand the contributions made by Boswell, Hoare and Dromgoole to the company’s rehearsal methodology.

Lope y Quevedo se conocen personalmente y se mueven en los mismos círculos literarios de la capital; la crítica suele considerar que el primero, pese a llevarle casi veinte años al segundo, es un discípulo de don Francisco por lo que atañe a la pluma satírica. Con todo, una acabada galería de retratos grotescos de mujeres feas que se incrustan en la poesía no dramática y teatral del Fénix desde la etapa temprana bien podría haber dejado alguna que otra huella en la escritura quevediana. Dicho de otra manera, no se puede excluir a priori que Lope haya podido ser, a su vez y aun sea de soslayo, una de las innumerables fuentes que inspiraron a Quevedo en un ámbito inesperado: el de la pintura poética de la mujer vieja y esperpéntica en que don Francisco es el sumo maestro.

Uno de los capítulos más interesantes de la polémica gongorina es lo que se ha dado en llamar correspondencia epistolar entre los círculos de Lope de Vega y Góngora, entre la que hay que situar el testimonio Respuesta a las cartas de don Luis de Góngora y de don Antonio de las Infantas. En este documento, entre otras cosas, se hace alusión a una serie de sonetos y décimas, relacionados con la defensa del Polifemo y las Soledades, que la crítica gongorina identificó teniendo en cuenta la fecha que se le había asignado a este testimonio. Sin embargo, tras las últimas aportaciones al estudio de la polémica gongorina, queda claro que esos poemas no pueden ser los que tradicionalmente se han tenido en cuenta. Por tanto, intentaremos demostrar por que no pueden ser esas composiciones y cuáles podrían ser las que verdaderamente son mencionadas.

Gracias al estudio arqueométrico de azulejos y otros elementos constructivos de lujo recuperados en el castillo medieval de A Rocha Branca (Padrón, Coruña), se ofrecen nuevos datos sobre las técnicas de fabricación de los mismos así como posibles lugares de producción que permiten profundizar en el estudio del comercio de época bajomedieval en Galicia. Se ha procedido a analizar un total de seis fragmentos, cinco de los cuales son azulejos vidriados, bien dibujados o bien monocromos y una pieza también vidriada, interpretada como un marco de puerta o ventana. Se trata de materiales asociados al arzobispo don Lope de Mendoza.
