Résumé :
Immunoglobulins (Igs), as one of the hallmarks of adaptive immunity, first arose approximately 500 million years ago with the emergence of jawed vertebrates. Two events stand out in the evolutionary history of Igs from cartilaginous fish to mammals: ( a) the diversification of Ig heavy chain (IgH) genes, resulting in Ig isotypes or subclasses associated with novel functions, and ( b) the diversification of genetic and structural strategies, leading to the creation of the antibody repertoire we know today. This review first gives an overview of the IgH isotypes identified in jawed vertebrates to date and then highlights the implications or applications of five new recent discoveries arising from comparative studies of Igs derived from different vertebrate species.

Résumé :
Modern software deployment process produces software that is uniform, and hence vulnerable to large-scale code-reuse attacks, such as Jump-Oriented Programming (JOP) attacks. Compiler-based diversification improves the resilience and security of software systems by automatically generating different assembly code versions of a given program. Existing techniques are efficient but do not have a precise control over the quality, such as the code size or speed, of the generated code variants. This paper introduces Diversity by Construction (DivCon), a constraint-based compiler approach to software diversification. Unlike previous approaches, DivCon allows users to control and adjust the conflicting goals of diversity and code quality. A key enabler is the use of Large Neighborhood Search (LNS) to generate highly diverse assembly code efficiently. For larger problems, we propose a combination of LNS with a structural decomposition of the problem. To further improve the diversification efficiency of DivCon against JOP attacks, we propose an application-specific distance measure tailored to the characteristics of JOP attacks. We evaluate DivCon with 20 functions from a popular benchmark suite for embedded systems. These experiments show that DivCon's combination of LNS and our application-specific distance measure generates binary programs that are highly resilient against JOP attacks (they share between 0.15% to 8% of JOP gadgets) with an optimality gap of 10%. Our results confirm that there is a trade-off between the quality of each assembly code version and the diversity of the entire pool of versions. In particular, the experiments show that DivCon is able to generate binary programs that share a very small number of gadgets, while delivering near-optimal code. For constraint programming researchers and practitioners, this paper demonstrates that LNS is a valuable technique for finding diverse solutions. For security researchers and software engineers, DivCon extends the scope of compiler-based diversification to performance-critical and resource-constrained applications.

Résumé :
Reports on structural diversification of steroids by means of multicomponent reactions (MCRs) have significantly increased over the last decade. This review covers the most relevant strategies dealing with the use of steroidal substrates in MCRs, including the synthesis of steroidal heterocycles and macrocycles as well as the conjugation of steroids to amino acids, peptides and carbohydrates. We demonstrate that steroids are available with almost all types of MCR reactive functionalities, e.g., carbonyl, carboxylic acid, alkyne, amine, isocyanide, boronic acid, etc., and that steroids are suitable starting materials for relevant MCRs such as those based on imine and isocyanide. The focus is mainly posed on proving the amenability of MCRs for the diversity-oriented derivatization of naturally occurring steroids and the construction of complex steroid-based platforms for drug discovery, chemical biology and supramolecular chemistry applications.

Résumé :
AbstractModels of functional ecospace diversification within life-habit frameworks (functional-trait spaces) are increasingly used across community ecology, functional ecology, and paleoecology. In general, these models can be represented by four basic processes, three that have driven causes and one that occurs through a passive process. The driven models include redundancy (caused by forms of functional canalization), partitioning (specialization), and expansion (divergent novelty), but they also share important dynamical similarities with the passive neutral model. In this second of two companion articles, Monte Carlo simulations of these models are used to illustrate their basic statistical dynamics across a range of data structures and implementations. Ecospace frameworks with greater numbers of characters (functional traits) and ordered (multistate) character types provide more distinct dynamics and greater ability to distinguish the models, but the general dynamics tend to be congruent across all implementations. Classification-tree methods are proposed as a powerful means to select among multiple candidate models when using multivariate data sets. Well-preserved Late Ordovician (type Cincinnatian) samples from the Kope and Waynesville formations are used to illustrate how these models can be inferred in empirical applications. Initial simulations overestimate the ecological disparity of actual assemblages, confirming that actual life habits are highly constrained. Modifications incorporating more realistic assumptions (such as weighting potential life habits according to actual frequencies and adding a parameter controlling the strength of each model’s rules) provide better correspondence to actual assemblages. Samples from both formations are best fit by partitioning (and to lesser extent redundancy) models, consistent with a role for local processes. When aggregated as an entire formation, the Kope Formation pool remains best fit by the partitioning model, whereas the entire Waynesville pool is better fit by the redundancy model, implying greater beta diversity within this unit. The ‘ecospace’ package is provided to implement the simulations and to calculate their dynamics using the R statistical language.

Résumé :
Cloud application platforms gain popularity and have the potential to alter the way service-based cloud applications are developed involving utilisation of platform basic services. A platform basic service provides certain functionality and is usually offered via a web API. However, the diversification of the services and the available providers increase the challenge for the application developers to integrate them and deal with the heterogeneous providers' web APIs. Therefore, a new approach of developing applications should be adopted in which developers leverage multiple platform basic services independently from the target application platforms. To this end, the authors present a development framework assisting the design of service-based cloud applications. The objective of the framework is to enable the consistent integration of the services, and to allow the seamless use of the concrete providers. The optimal service provider each time can vary depending on criteria such as pricing, quality of service and can be determined based upon Big Data analysis approaches.

Résumé :
Purpose Following the methodology designed for selecting the best industrial and technological diversification strategy, one of the best methods for achieving the long-term sustainability of companies, the purpose of this paper is to describe its application in the service supply chains (SSCs) sector, specifically, in freight transport in product service supply chains. Design/methodology/approach The methodology used in diversification processes comprises four stages: evaluation of the technological diversification suitability; selection of the technological diversification strategy; implementation of the diversification strategy; and evaluation of the process. Findings The main contributions of the paper are: the proposal of a taxonomy or functional inventory for information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the freight transport industry (FTI); the introduction of a new concept, the technological shrub, a variant of the technological tree that allows interdependencies between the functionality systems; the construction of a technological shrub for ICTs in a standard FTI firm; and the multicriteria selection, based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), of the best diversification strategy that can be incorporated by this standard firm for improving competitiveness. This selection utilises a “bottom-up” approach. Originality/value The paper deals with the long-term sustainability of companies by means of technological diversification strategies. Based on the taxonomy constructed for ICTs in the SSC sector and the identification of key technologies for a particular firm, a technological shrub is constructed and a multicriteria procedure is developed in order to select the best diversification strategy.

Résumé :
The names proposed world-wide for Devonian bryozoans have been evaluated with respect to replaced names, synonyms, and nomina dubia [Horowitz and Pachut (1993), Journal of Paleontology, in press]. The resulting list contains 1738 specific names assigned to 199 genera in 45 families. Approximately 75% of Devonian bryozoan species are reported from a single stage. Not more than 10%, and usually 4–6%, of the species reported in any Devonian stage are also reported in the succeeding stage. The largest decrease in observed bryozoan diversity occurs between the Givetian and Frasnian stages, reducing the number of species by 77%, genera by 64%, and families by 42%. These values are less than those reported for the range-through method for the entire fauna of the Permian mass extinction (Raup, 1979) but larger than percentage extinctions (presumably based on range-though data) for four other Phanerozoic mass extinctions tabulated by Valentine and Walker (1987).The range-through method dampens the observed differences in taxonomic diversity among Devonian stages at all taxonomic levels. The range-through number of species/stage is based upon both direct applications of the range-through method and on the assignment of ranges known only to early, middle and late Devonian to include appropriate Devonian stages. Generic and familial diversity increases monotonically from Lochkovian through Givetian stages. Thereafter (Givetian to Frasnian), range-through values for specific (69%), generic (31%), and familial diversity (10%) decrease. Specific and familial decreases across the Givetian-Frasnian boundary are comparable to those reported for non-Permian mass extinctions by Valentine and Walker, but the generic decrease is not as great. These results are consistent with Valentine and Walker's random mass extinction model.Observed bryozoan diversity across the Frasnian-Famennian boundary increases while values calculated using the range-through method decrease by approximately 5–15%. This does not suggest a major bryozoan extinction event. Conversely, the decrease in bryozoan diversity across the Givetian-Frasnian interval is similar to an important Devonian extinction among rugose corals. The reason(s) for these extinctions is not yet clear. With respect to Devonian bryozoans, our inadequate understanding of the cause(s) of mass extinctions and the relatively coarse resolution of the stadial timescale does not permit differentiating between gradual or catastrophic scenarios.

Résumé :
The goal of this research is to conduct an analysis of the mediating role of diversification strategy in increasing competitive advantage, as well as the impact of strategic leadership, in the manufacturing industry located at Riau Island region, Indonesia, categorized as medium, large and export-oriented companies listed in the Riau Island’s Central Statistical Office 2021 directory. The method applied is quantitative research with Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to test the hypothesis. Primary data were collected by sending questionnaires to 210 respondents as the representative of the manufacturing industry, by using purposive sampling, which was then analyzed using AMOS software. The study's findings indicate that diversification strategy can operate as a significant and positive mediator in strategic leadership to achieve a competitive advantage, despite the fact that the direct effect test of the diversification strategy variable has no influence on competitive advantage. It may investigate adding other exogenous variables or applying dimensions such as cross-cultural leadership with a fixed population sample in the manufacturing industry, outside Riau Island, or in other countries for future research.

Résumé :
The aim of the study was to assess the spatial diversification of the level and structure of delivery of the funds available within measure ‘Implementing Local Development Strategies’ under axis 4 of the RDP 2007-2013. The period taken into analysis covered the European financial perspective of 2007-2013. The spatial scope of the analysis involved the territory of Poland, on the level of districts. It focused on the diversification in the number of applications (40.4 thousand in total; on average 10.5 applications per 10 thousand people) and in the amount of payments (2.8 bln PLN in total; on average 73 PLN per capita), taking into account four kinds of implemented strategies: “Small projects”, “Renovation and development of villages’, “Creation and development of micro-enterprises” and “Diversification into non-agricultural activities”. The spatial analysis was based on two elementary indices which were later subjected to the standardization procedure and presented jointly in form of composite index of LEADER funds implementation. It emerged that the above-mentioned RDP measure was strongly diversified spatially, with the highest level of indices in districts featuring a lower socio-economic development, which is in line with the EU cohesion policy.

Résumé :
In its early stages, “text linguistics” was a sufficiently compact and localized enterprise that describing it would not have seemed inordinately difficult. Today, however, text linguistics has attained such prominence that it formed the largest contingent at the last International Congress of Linguists in Berlin in 1987. This rise has been accompanied by a widening of scope, a profusion of models, theories, and terms, and a diversification of the phenomena it is intended to capture or designate. The very term “text linguistics” may seem too narrow, and wider alternatives have been proposed, such as “text studies,” “text science,” “textology,” and above all “discourse analysis.” Similarly, some scholars have proposed that text linguistics be incorporated into a broader domain, such as semiotics/semiology, ethnography/enthnomethodology, communications, cognitive science, and so forth.

Résumé :
This paper aimed to test the validity of capital asset pricing model (CAPM) and arbitrage pricing theory (APT) in Jordanian stock Market using three different firms of three main sectors, financial, industrial, and service sector for the period Q1 (2000) to Q4 (2016), using published information obtained from Amman stock exchange (ASE), these models were designed to measure the cost of capital using the coefficient of systematic risk factor, that used in the valuation of capital assets. We reviewed the most important similarities and differences between the two models out of sectors analysis. The study showed, first, there are some differences between the two models in term of the amount of systematic risk that can be eliminated by diversification in the three sectors. Second, the application of APT model showed that large percentage of risk can be eliminated by diversification more than CAPM model. Third, the banking sector in Jordan faces more systematic risks than other sectors.

Résumé :
AbstractWhen searching for information in a data collection, we are often interested not only in finding relevant items, but also in assembling a diverse set, so as to explore different concepts that are present in the data. This problem has been researched extensively. However, finding a set of items with minimal pairwise similarities can be computationally challenging, and most existing works striving for quality guarantees assume that item relatedness is measured by a distance function. Given the widespread use of similarity functions in many domains, we believe this to be an important gap in the literature. In this paper we study the problem of finding a diverse set of items, when item relatedness is measured by a similarity function. We formulate the diversification task using a flexible, broadly applicable minimization objective, consisting of the sum of pairwise similarities of the selected items and a relevance penalty term. To find good solutions we adopt a randomized rounding strategy, which is challenging to analyze because of the cardinality constraint present in our formulation. Even though this obstacle can be overcome using dependent rounding, we show that it is possible to obtain provably good solutions using an independent approach, which is faster, simpler to implement and completely parallelizable. Our analysis relies on a novel bound for the ratio of Poisson-Binomial densities, which is of independent interest and has potential implications for other combinatorial-optimization problems. We leverage this result to design an efficient randomized algorithm that provides a lower-order additive approximation guarantee. We validate our method using several benchmark datasets, and show that it consistently outperforms the greedy approaches that are commonly used in the literature.
