The microstructural characterization and mechanical behavior of Cr25Ni35NbM/15CrMo and Cr25Ni35NbM/SUS321 dissimilar weld joints were studied in this paper. The microstructure, room temperature and high temperature (1173 K) tensile strength of dissimilar weld joints were analyzed through optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electronic universal tensile testing machine. The microstructure of HAZ in 15CrMo steel of Cr25Ni35NbM/15CrMo dissimilar weld joint transformed from ferrite-pearlite into ferrite-martensite. A large volume fraction of α phase was found to have precipitated in the HAZ of SUS321 austenitic stainless steel for Cr25Ni35NbM/SUS321 dissimilar weld joint. At room temperature, the tensile strength and yield strength of these two type dissimilar weld joints is less than Cr25Ni35NbM alloy similar weld joint. The high temperature tensile strength of these two type dissimilar weld joints is less than Cr25Ni35NbM alloy similar weld joint. Both at room and high temperature, the fracture locations of two types dissimilar weld joints are the HAZ of the base metal 15CrMo and SUS321 stainless steel, respectively. It indicates that the weak part of the Cr25Ni35NbM alloy dissimilar weld joints is the low-performance base metals 15CrMo and SUS321 stainless steel.

Résumé :
Friction welding (FRW) is a promising method for joining cylindrical components of dissimilar and similar polymers or metals. In particular, FRW is capable of generating defect-free welds. Fused deposition modeling (FDM) has been widely employed in the automotive industry, ranging from lightweight tools, testing models, and functional parts. Conventionally, dissimilar parts fabricated by FDM are joined by glue. However, distinct disadvantages of this approach include both low joining strength and low joining efficiency. Hitherto, little has been reported on the characterizations of weld strength of FRW of dissimilar parts fabricated by FDM. In addition, FRW of dissimilar polymeric materials is a difficult task because different polymers have different physical, rheological, and mechanical properties. In this study, the effects of welding revolution on the weld strength of friction welding dissimilar parts fabricated by FDM are investigated experimentally. It was found that the average flexural strength of dissimilar polymer rods fabricated by FRW is about 1.52 times that of dissimilar polymer rods fabricated by gluing. The highest flexure strength can be obtained by FRW using polylactic acid (PLA) and PC (polycarbonate) rods. The average impact strength of dissimilar polymer rods fabricated by FRW is about 1.04 times that of dissimilar polymer rods joined by gluing. The highest impact strength can be obtained by FRW using PLA to PLA rods.

Résumé :
Many engineering applications in aerospace and automotive field require joining of dissimilar 5xxx to 6xxx Al alloys. Dissimilar Al alloy joints are used for industrial applications due to technical & economic reasons. However, due to different metallurgical behaviour & mechanical properties, joining of dissimilar Al alloys presents a number of challenges. Due to high temperature generation most of the fusion welding techniques are not suitable. In addition, other pressure welding techniques such as – Ultrasonic welding, Roll bonding, Diffusion bonding and Friction welding have some limitation. Hence, friction stir welding (FSW) can be considered to be the most suitable method to join dissimilar Al alloys due to solid-state nature of the process. Since invention, friction stir welding has been a matter of research and investigation for years. In its history of two decades, Friction Stir welding was investigated for joining dissimilar Al alloys during the last decade. Most of studies demonstrated that good quality joints between dissimilar Al alloys can be produced by the Friction Stir Welding (FSW) process. The present study is a chronological & critical review of recent studies on joining of dissimilar 5xxx to 6xxx Al alloys by friction stir welding.

Apenas o TP melhorou a VFC.

A method for lightweight strength optimization when using dissimilar materials is proposed by applying topology optimization and a design-of-experiment (DOE) to a seat-cushion frame with typical steel. Static analysis of the seat-cushion frame was performed by applying the appropriate safety standards for each passenger. The authors performed topology optimization of the seat-cushion, which was subjected to static analysis and confirmed that the method can be applied to dissimilar materials according to their density ratio as well as the strength of the cushion frame, which was made with dissimilar materials. The strength of the cushion frame made of dissimilar materials is improved compared to the seat-cushion frame made of typical steel. It was also confirmed that the application ratio of the dissimilar materials and the optimization of the application ratio of a dissimilar ratio and the thickness of each material using the DOE can improve the strength of the cushion frame and reduce the weight.

Résumé :
When designing piping systems for various industrial facilities, carbon steel and stainless steel are widely being used. In order to satisfy design requirements in the piping systems, the two different materials are often welded in various cases. Therefore, for quality assurance, it is necessary to understand mechanical and metallurgical properties of dissimilar metal welds thoroughly. In this study, dissimilar metal welds of stainless and carbon steels were produced through the gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) process. In the middle of the dissimilar weld, buttering welding and butt welding were manufactured using filler wires of ERNiCr-3 and ER316L. The chemical composition of the dissimilar metal weld was analyzed. Tensile test, bending test, and hardness test were additionally performed. The microstructures of the dissimilar metal weld were investigated to analyze the cracks found during the tensile test and the bending test. The metallographic behavior was analyzed in the vicinity of the cracks. The mechanism and cause of the cracks in the dissimilar metal weld were identified. As a result, the precipitates of complex carbide types were observed in segregation bands.

Résumé :
In the current investigation, the influence of the tool geometry, the position of the materials in the joint, the welding speed on the temperature and torque developed, and on the quality of the welds in dissimilar and tri-dissimilar T joints were analysed. The aluminium alloys used were AA2017-T4, AA6082-T6, and AA5083-H111 and the friction stir welds were performed with identical shoulder tools, but with either a pin with simple geometry or a pin with progressive geometry. Progressive pin tools proved to be a viable alternative in the production of dissimilar and tri-dissimilar welds, as they provide a larger tool/material friction area and a larger volume of dragged material, which promotes an increase in the heat generated and a good mixing of the materials in the stir zone, although they require a higher torque. Placing a stronger material on the advancing side also results in a higher temperature in the stir zone but requires higher torque too. The combination of these factors showed that tools with a progressive pin provide sound dissimilar and tri-dissimilar welds, unlike single-pin tools. The increase in the welding speed causes the formation of defects in the stir zone, even in tri-dissimilar welds carried out with a tool with a progressive pin, which impairs the fatigue strength of the welds.

Dissimilar weld joints with four groove angles were constructed using gas tungsten arc welding. The results showed that post-weld heat treatment improved the mechanical properties of the dissimilar weld joints. The optimal groove angle for T92/Super 304H dissimilar weld joints was found to be 20°, considering mechanical properties. Furthermore, the transformation from equiaxed dendrites to columnar dendrites was observed in the weld metal. Epitaxial growth and delta ferrites were found around the fusion line between the Super 304H and the weld metal.

Résumé :
By the finite element analysis software ABAQUS and the function of coupling process between heat and stress, the welding residual stress of Cr5Mo and 20 steel joint was analyzed. In addition the heat treatment of dissimilar steel welded joint was simulated. The residual stress distributions of dissimilar steel welding and heat treatment after welding were obtained. The comparison of welding residual stress between the homogenous steel and dissimilar steel was carried out. The results indicate that the welding residual stress of the same steel is lower than that of dissimilar steel welded joint obviously. Because of the difference of thermal expansion coefficient for base metal and welding microstructure, the relatively higher residual stress is produced due to the bigger thermal expansion coefficient of base metal. The highest annular residual stress is in welding line root of internal wall, while the highest axial residual stress is in welding line surface of outer wall. The welding residual stress of dissimilar welded joint is reduced obviously after heat treatment. The research results provide the possibility for optimizing the welding procedure and improving the reliability of dissimilar steel welding joint.

Résumé :
Spaceborn optical payload consists of optical elements supported by mechanical structure in desired orientation. Mechanical structure made up of various dissimilar materials like aluminum & invar possess dissimilar thermo-elastic behavior. Opto-mechanical assembly subjected to temperature change will results to change in optical element orientation which ultimately leads to change in optical parameters like registration. This is mainly due to dissimilar materials subjected to temperature variation will result to structural distortion. Use of dissimilar materials in an Opto- mechanical payload affects the angular stability of optical element due to temperature variation and results to change in optical element orientation. Flexure is required to be introduced within the opto-mechanical system having dissimilar materials to accommodate differential thermal expansion due to temperature variation and to maintain the registration. This paper explains, stability in dichroic element orientation of an opto-mechanical payload having dissimilar material & flexure design to maintain the orientation in opto-mechanical payload subjected to temperature variation without deterioration of fundamental frequency. It also explains theoretical thermo-elastic analysis and experimental test for validation of design, static and dynamic structural analysis like frequency response analysis to check the flexure survivability for vibration load.

Résumé :
In this study, dissimilar material welding between Alloy617 and 12Cr steel was performed using the buttering welding technique on the 12Cr steel side in order to increase the weldability. After multi-pass welding, post weld heat treatment (PWHT) was performed in order to reduce the welding residual stresses, and metallurgical microstructures were observed on dissimilar material weld. Additionally, the corrosion fatigue crack growth characteristics of dissimilar material weld was assessed according to Fracture Mechanics. Based on the results, the fatigue and corrosion fatigue strength of dissimilar material weld between Alloy617 and 12Cr steel did not show a big difference prior to and after post weld heat treatment. Fatigue and corrosion fatigue crack growth of dissimilar material weld were slightly faster than those of similar material weld of Alloy617. However, the characteristics of fatigue and corrosion fatigue crack growth did not show a big difference prior to and after PWHT.

Résumé :
Abstract: This article presents numerical investigation of isotropic dissimilar material joints. Dissimilar material joints are broadly used in in various structures, including offshore, nuclear, electronic packaging, IC chip and spacecraft various fields of science and technology. In bi-material joints two different material are bonded with common interface region. High stress concentration occur at the interface of the joint under thermo-mechanical loadings due to the difference in the elastic properties and the thermal expansion coefficients of dissimilar materials. The stresses acting along the interface of dissimilar material joints are very important to determine whether the structure is reliable or not for operation. The main purpose of this research is to provide finite element solutions to predict the stress distribution at the interface of the joint based on the theory of elasticity. Résumé :
In the absence of any abnormality (standard conditions), the gradient of any mechanical/thermodynamic stress would be intensified at the dissimilar joint due to an abrupt change in the chemical composition. This paper aims to investigate the effect of delocalizing this stress by imposing an optimum chemical gradient within the dissimilar joint. In this work, we computationally demonstrated that a homogenous distribution of magnesium atoms in the aluminum (100) structure with a specific chemical gradient could potentially reduce the susceptibility of the Mg/Al dissimilar joint towards micro-galvanic corrosion. This is achieved through the minimization of the work function gradient within the dissimilar joint.
