Résumé :
Abstract The distinction between forecast quality and economic value in a cost–loss formulation is well known. Also well known is their complex relationship, even with some instances of a reversal between the two, where higher quality is associated with lower economic value, and vice versa. It is reasonable to expect such counterintuitive results when forecast quality and economic value—both, multifaceted quantities—are summarized by single scalar measures. Diagrams are often used to display forecast quality in order to better represent the multidimensional nature of forecast quality. Here, it is proposed that economic value be displayed as a region on a plot of hit rate versus false-alarm rate. Such a display obviates any need to summarize economic value by a scalar measure. The choice of the axes is motivated by the relative operating characteristic (ROC) diagram, and, so, this manner of displaying economic value is useful for deterministic as well as probabilistic forecasts.

Résumé :
This work is the development of previously published ones in the journal "Geometry and Graphics" as follows: "Kinematic Correspondence of Rotating Spaces" (№ 1, 2013) and "Formation of Cyclic Surfaces in Kinetic Geometry" (№ 4, 2017). Many of mechanisms make rotational movement, wherein rotating parts of one mechanism "invade" into the zone of rotation for another rotating mechanism’s parts. At the same time, in addition to rotation, they can make other movements, both translational and rotational nature. The theory of kinetic geometry, of which this work is an integral part, is developed in order to avoid collisions of two or more parts of different mechanisms with each other. This is a rather complicated problem in mechanical engineering, in the mining industry, in metallurgy, and in space navigation, where there are no objects that are at rest. Therefore, the kinetic theory of matching for rotating spaces R1 3 and R23 when they are independent from each other movement is quite relevant. In this work have been considered cases for mapping of geometric figures of one space to another one when these figures are moving inside their space R13 . A theory which is presented has been called kinetic geometry, as it relates to engineering problems associated with gearings. These problems were addressed for the first time and drew-up as inventions. A monograph entitled "Introduction to Kinetic Geometry" is currently being prepared for publication.

Drawings belong to the important concentrated expressions of information that attract attention and are a kind of ‘language’ of communication between the author and the viewer (reader). They allow clearly highlighting the main points, emphasize certain details, or reflect the nature of natural objects without too much detail. It is one of the ways to explore and study reality. In these materials, a small selection of drawings with the most concise text was prepared, some of which were exhibited in 1991 in the Department of Nature of the Zhytomyr Regional Museum of Local Lore at the exhibition ‘From the Diary of a Naturalist.’ All of them were created and accumulated gradually, often as illustrations to field diaries.

Résumé :
SummaryIn 2013 a prediction was made that the South-East Asian subspecies of Bengal Florican Houbaropsis bengalensis blandini would be extinct within 10 years. In 2018 we conducted a survey in the Tonle Sap floodplain, Cambodia, of the last population of Bengal Florican in South-East Asia. We found that the rate of decline in displaying males was 55% over five years, a decline comparable to that recorded between 2005–2007 and 2012. The estimated number of displaying males in 2018 was 104 (95% CI: 89–117), down from 216 (156–275) in 2012. We also conducted surveys by flushing birds in the non-breeding season, which indicated that the sex ratio of males to females is 3:1. We therefore estimate that the total population of adult Bengal Floricans in Cambodia in 2018 was 138 (119–156), making H. b. blandini the most threatened bustard taxon. The number of sites that support displaying male Bengal Floricans was reduced from 10 to four between 2012 and 2018. Between 2012 and 2018 we monitored numbers of displaying males in most years at the sites that support 80% of the total population. The only site where numbers of birds are stable is Stoung-Chikraeng Bengal Florican Conservation Area, where there were 44 (25–63) displaying males in 2018. This is the only site that has an ongoing NGO-government conservation programme. Our data indicate that Bengal Floricans are lost from sites when the area of grassland falls below 25 km2. We found evidence that displaying male Bengal Floricans abandon display territories when grassland is lost, this also creates hope that they may disperse and could colonise newly created habitat. All remaining sites that support Bengal Floricans in Cambodia are imperilled and we outline what must be done to reduce the possibility that H. b. blandini will be extinct by 2023.

This chapter summarizes the results obtained. Faith is both a secular and a sacred virtue, displaying the same nature in both contexts. This nature is fundamentally dispositional rather than doxastic or cognitive, and the states that realize the disposition are behavioural, cognitive, affective, and conative. Though a virtue, faith has a downside, and the same is true of humility. The distinctive relationship between the two is that each is a virtue complementary to the other.

Résumé :
Several recent artistic projects have revisited the cabinets of curiosities that were fashionable in Europe in the sixteenth century, predating the more systematized approach to collecting and displaying nature that was to characterize the Enlightenment. Cabinets of curiosities employed visual analogies and other effects to raise ontological questions about the natural world and the relationship between art and nature. Pablo La Padula (Argentina) and Cristian Villavicencio (Ecuador/Spain) interrogate the politics of such collections, developing a critique of the relationships that underpin them, between colonialism, capitalist accumulation, and the commodification of nature. Renaissance cabinets did, however, allow for more creative and diverse entanglings of nature and culture than were permitted in the more systematic collections of the eighteenth century that were to replace them. In his reassemblings of natural history collections, Villavicencio reflects on the link between microscopes (among other technologies of vision) and a commitment to a distanced, “objective” vision that became central to modern scientific techniques. Both La Padula and Villavicencio create opportunities for alternative encounters with the natural world that are embodied and subjective. Like Yuk Hui’s concept of “cosmotechnics,” these allow us to explore “the different relations between the human and technics inherited from different mythologies and cosmologies” and therefore to generate plural accounts of technological modernity.

Résumé :
The Kwa languages (Niger-Congo) of West Africa are well-known for displaying Serial Verb Constructions (SVCs). The literature on SVCs contains various definitions of the phenomenon and recapitulates the general observation that these constructions express fine-grained information about a complex event and the participants involved therein. This paper seeks to shed light on the structure that underlies Take and Give SVCs in Gungbe, a Gbe (Kwa) language spoken in Benin and Nigeria. The examples discussed in the paper demonstrate how Gungbe is able to employ SVCs to encode specific details about the eventive structure. The proposed analysis further sheds light on elements which were classified in the Kwa literature as ‘verbid’ (cf. Ansre 1966) for their ambiguous status between adpositions and lexical verbs. It is argued that the ambiguity reduces to the nature of roots and their functions in Gungbe: the same root can occupy different grammatical functions.

Résumé :
AbstractCitizen science is a promising field for educational practices and research. However, it is also highly heterogeneous, and learning happens in diverse ways, according to project tasks and participants’ activities. Therefore, we adopt a sociocultural view of learning, in which understanding learning requires a close analysis of the situation created both by the project tasks and the dynamics of engagement of the participants (volunteers, scientists, and others). To tackle the complexity of the field, this chapter maps learning in citizen science into six territories, according to where learning might take place: formal education (schools and universities); out-of-school education (science and nature clubs, summer camps, outdoor education, etc.); local and global communities (neighbourhood associations, activist associations, online communities, etc.); families; museums (science museums, art museums, zoos, and botanic gardens); and online citizen science. For each territory, we present key findings from the literature. The chapter also introduces our six personal journeys into the field of learning and citizen science, displaying their variety and the common lessons, challenges, and opportunities. Finally, we present four key tensions arising from citizen science projects in educational settings and look at training different stakeholders as a strategy to overcome some of these tensions.

Résumé :
AbstractThis introductory chapter presents the antecedents and the purpose that originated the creation of this book on cross-cultural studies on hope. It sketches the existential and multifaceted nature of hope and points to the array of disciplines that, over many decades and even centuries, have studied the phenomenon of hope from various scientific perspectives and in different contexts. Based on the past focus and the current challenges in psychological research on hope, it pleads for an inter- and transdisciplinary approach to the study of hope in diverse cultural contexts. After briefly introducing a cultural perspective on hope, we present the purpose, development, and research focus of the Hope Barometer international research program. We highlight the necessity to conceptualize hope in a trans-disciplinary and culture-sensitive way and then formulate a number of fundamental research questions that guided the empirical studies reported in this book. Assessing hope across cultures requires the development of measures that, on the one hand, prevent bias in the general conceptualization of hope and, on the other hand, permit the analysis of several elements and dimensions of hope, such as different hope targets, sources, and activities. Hope and its various elements and dimensions are partly rooted in diverse culturally tinted worldviews and values, displaying different correlations and predictors of hope across cultures. A succinct overview of the structure and single chapters of the book aims to show up the overall logic that guided its outline.

Résumé :
AbstractThe Namib Desert, as represented in Iona National Park, provides a living museum of the adaptations of animals and plants to extreme environments. This chapter illustrates the morphological, behavioural and physiological adaptations resulting from natural selection in response to extreme conditions of aridity and temperature. The role of water is described as the ‘currency of life’ in the Namib. Surface area to volume ratios in animals and plants determine rates of water loss through evaporation, with many succulent plant species displaying the short, stout water conserving pachycaul life form. Water capture from fog is achieved by ‘fog basking’ and ‘sand trenching’ by beetle species, and by grazing at night (when water content of grasses is highest) by antelope. Competition for food in low productivity environments such as the Namib takes many forms, including habitat partitioning, cooperative behaviour and efficient food storage mechanisms. Unique Namib natural phenomena, such as the ‘fairy circles’ - bare patches in extensive desert grasslands - have received intensive study by multiple research groups. Arguments proposing divergent hypotheses demonstrate the scientific method in action.

Résumé :
AbstractCurrently, there is plenty of information available on restaurant rating platforms, but sometimes it can be contradictory or difficult to analyze in depth. An important challenge for consumers is searching for useful opinions and making decisions based on reviews usually obtained from different social networks or rating platforms. This project addresses this issue through the design, development, and implementation of a system that generates global recommendations for a set of restaurants based on the analysis of reviews using Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques. The system is based on a corpus of restaurant reviews in Mexico City, from which relevant aspects are extracted and synthesized to generate comprehensive reviews from various sources. The system can also evaluate customer satisfaction by identifying the positive and negative aspects mentioned in their reviews. In this way, it provides comprehensive information that helps diners make informed decisions. By gathering data from various sources, the system classifies and analyzes the information, providing an analysis rather than just displaying data. Another important aspect is that the project contributes to the promotion of the gastronomic offer in Mexico City, supporting tourism in a more informed way. By integrating customer perspectives, a more complete and realistic view of the restaurant experience is obtained. The importance of this project lies in the empirical evidence showing that consumer reviews are influenced by the average rating and the number of reviews. Given the overwhelming number of options and the need to provide relevant information efficiently, this project offers a solution by generating detailed reviews based on aggregated information from multiple sources, including consumer reviews and influencer critiques.

Résumé :
Abstract Spending Time Perusing and “Dissecting” museums from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries gives one some refreshing distance from the more familiar evolutionary exhibits. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries American and European museums primarily concerned themselves with educating the public about the theory of evolution, explaining the principles and displaying the evidence. Currently, a significant amount of museum space is still given over to the pedagogy of evolution. We are so accustomed to evolutionary displays that we often fail to appreciate their underlying logic. Stepping back and examining one’s own paradigm is, after all, almost as hard as tasting one’s own tongue. As we saw in chapters 3 and 4, organizing and displaying specimens is a way of visualizing the invisible, of making ideas palpable. There are rich invisible cultures that, if analyzed properly, emerge out of the material culture of contemporary evolution exhibits.

Résumé :
One of important aspects of developing geographic information systems and remote sensing of the Earth is the problem of displaying the received data for visual analysis. Dynamic data are particularly difficult in this regard. In this case, not the current state may be of interest, but the change in data over time. It is very difficult to display such data and their change. At the same time, in some cases, it is the change of some spatial and vegetation indices that can give man a complete picture and allow to make the right decisions. This paper is devoted to the development of methods for displaying changes in the Earth remote sensing data based on automatically placed markers showing the direction and nature of the change. Experiments have shown that such markers make it possible to focus man's attention well on the dynamics of changes and improve the visual perception of such information. The paper proposes not only an original approach to markers, but also an algorithm for automatic arrangement of these markers on the map, taking into account both remote sensing data and the nature and dynamics of their changes over a certain period of time. This allows to build a fully automated system for preparing visual maps for people. The method of marker formation itself, which combines both color and symbolic information for a sharper image, may also be of interest.

Résumé :
Slug flow is one of the common flow patterns in gas and oil production and transportation. One of the closure relationships required by the multiphase flow mechanistic models is slug length correlation. There are several closure relationships proposed in the literature as function of pipe geometry, pipe diameter and inclination angle, and to a lesser extent to the flow rates and fluid properties. In this paper, we show that most of the frequently used mechanistic models are insensitive to slug length information. The only exception to this is identified as the Zhang et al. Unified model [1]. The unified model shows sensitivity at high gas flow rates, while displaying a negligible sensitivity at low gas flow rates. In conclusion, the slug length closure relationship is not crucial for pressure loss and holdup calculations. It can be speculated that the success of the unit cell slug flow modeling approach could be attributed to insensitivity of the models to slug length considering the highly probabilistic nature of the slug length.

Résumé :
Face detection and authentication have become an active field of research material in recent years duo to the increased use of face dependent access control systems, which can be considered as a good alternative to other biometric features such as fingerprint duo to its easily accessible, non- intrusive nature that makes it very important during the ongoing pandemic years. However, this method doesn’t come without security risks related to adversaries seeking to gain unauthorized access to the system. Face spoofing is a security breach attempt occurs when the attacker tries to deceive the face-enabled access control system by displaying a photo, video or wearing a mask of an authorized person to gain access. The paper in hand suggests a method for face anti-spoofing by utilizing some of the well-known feature extraction techniques usually associated with face detection and recognition, namely the LBP and Gabor features, in addition to the commonly used SVM classifier for identifying real and spoofed feces. The algorithm is implemented successfully on multiple individuals, achieving performance levels comparable to other accredited methods in terms of FAR, FRR and HTER verification criteria, aspiring for more advancedand effective methods.

Résumé :
Instrument adjustment policies play a key role in the reliability of calibrated instruments to maintain their accuracy over a specified time interval. Periodic review and adjustment of assigned calibration intervals is required by national standard ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 and is employed to manage the End of Period Reliability (EOPR) to acceptable levels. Instrument adjustment policies may also be implemented with various guardband strategies to manage false accept risk. However, policies and guidance addressing the routine adjustment of in-tolerance instruments are not so well established. National and international calibration standards ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 and ISO/IEC-17025 do not mandate any particular adjustment policy with regard to in-tolerance equipment. Evidence has been previously presented where routine adjustment of in-tolerance items may even degrade performance. Yet, this important part of the overall calibration process is often left to the discretion of the calibrating technician based on heuristic assessment. Astute adjustment decisions require knowledge of the random vs. systematic nature of instrument error. Instruments dominated by systematic effects, such as drift, benefit from adjustment, while those displaying more random behavior may not. Monte Carlo methods are used here to investigate the effect of various adjustment thresholds on in-tolerance instruments.

Bandalo, Višnja. « ICONOGRAPHIC DEPICTION AND LITERARY PORTRAYING IN BERNARD BERENSON'S DIARY AND EPISTOLARY WRITING ». Dans NORDSCI Conference Proceedings. Saima Consult Ltd, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.32008/nordsci2021/b1/v4/18.

Résumé :
The paper focuses on the interlacement of literary and iconographic elements by displaying an innovatory philological and stylistic approach, from a comparative perspective, in thematizing multilingual translational and adaptive aspects, ranging across Bernard Berenson's diaristic and epistolary corpus, in conjunction with his works on Italian visual culture. This interweaving gives occasion to the elaboration of multilinguistic textual influences and their verbo-visual artistic representations deduced from his innovative interpretative readings in the domain of world literature in modern times. Such analysis of the discourse of theoretical and literary nature, and of the pictoricity, refers to Bernard Berenson's multilingual considerations about canonical authors in English, Italian, French, German language, belonging to the Neoclassical and Romantic period, as well as to the contemporary era, as conceptualized in his autobiographical works, in correlation with his writings on Italian figurative art. The scope of this presentation is to discern and articulate Berenson's aesthetic ideas evoking literary and artistic modernity, that are infused with crucial notions of translational theory and conveyed through the methodology of close reading and comprising at the same time, in an omnicomprehensive manner, a plurality of tendencies intrinsic to social paradigms of cultural studies. Unexplored premises reflecting Berenson's vision of Italian culture, most notably of a visual stamp, will be analyzed through author's understandings of such adaptive translations or volumes to be subsequently translated in Italian, and through their intertwined intertextual applications, significantly contributing to further critical and hermeneutic reception thereof. Particular attention is drawn to its instancing in the field of Romantic literary production (Emerson, Byron), originally underscoring the specificities of each literary genre and expressive mode, of the narrative, lyric or theatrical nature, as well as concomitantly involving parallel notions as adapted variants within visual arts, and in such a way expressing theoretical views pertainable to Italian artworks too. Other analogous elements relevant to literary expression in the most varied cultural sectors such as philosophy, music, civilisational history (Goethe, Hegel, Kant, Wagner, Chateaubriand, Rousseau, Mme de Staël, Taine) are furnished, as well as the examples of the resonances of non-western cultures, with the objective of exploring the effect among readership bringing also to the renewal of Italian tradition.

Résumé :
The need for protection of human settlements has existed since the earliest times of human society. It is reflected in the choice of the terrain, strategic location and through the construction of castles and fortification walls to protect the life inside the settlement. Being interdependent to the human settlement that they aim to protect, fortifications, apart from reflecting the building and military techniques of the time, are also a significant indicator of the life and extent of the historic built settlement within the walls, its accessibility, main transportation routes, etc. In Albania, fortifications, based on a classification on typology, function, building techniques, among others, are one of the first architectural genre designated as monuments of culture in the first national List of Cultural Monuments back in 1948. When in urban areas, these elements often constituted the core of the settlement. As such, they are permanent urban nodes in times of growth, development and change during the centuries and often conditioning/determining the growth policies around them. In present days, many only preserve traces of the protective structures and the walls and few still continue to host living neighborhoods within the perimeter. This article focuses on the fortifications in urban areas linked to historic settlements and impacted from the urban sprawl through history or currently due to urban development pressures. How do these permanent features of the city face urban growth, offering a categorization of the impacts being: building within, out or close to the encirclement of walls, or even the impact on the traditional landscape? By displaying a detailed view of the nature and range of impacts the study aims at helping national and local authorities dealing with cultural heritage, to undertake informed decisions for the protection and management of cultural heritage facing risk or loss of cultural values, and to be able to produce contemporary urban landscapes where historical layers combine.

Résumé :
The interaction of glycosaminoglycans with plasma fibronectin (PFn) may play a role in the conversion of PFn from an “inert” dimeric circulating form to an “activated” multimeric form deposited on the cell surface or in the extracellular matrix. We carried out a quantitative comparison of heparin affinity for PFn and its proteolytic fragments in order to assess the relative importance of heparin interactions with PFn’s various reported heparin-binding domains. We employed affinity chromatography on PFn-sepharose to prepare a subset of fluorescein-labelled heparin molecules with high affinity for PFn, and confirmed that heparin binding to PFn is very sensitive to ionic strength. This suggests that the PFn-sepharose column selectively binds a fraction of highly sulfated heparin molecules. We quantified PFn-heparin affinity in the fluid-phase by monitoring a fluorescence polarization change that occurred as a consequence of the decrease in the rotational diffusion rate of fluorescently-labelled heparin molecules (13.8 kD) as they became “immobilized” by binding to PFn. Scatchard analysis of the heparin fluorescence polarization data obtained for PFn in Tris-buffered saline yielded a biphasic curve with Kd’s estimated at 5 and 130 nM, respectively A 190 kD thrombin fragment, containing the C-terminal "Hep II" domain but lacking the 29 kD N-terminal “Hep I” domain, yielded a linear plot displaying a single class of heparin-binding sites with a Kd of 130 nM Similar results were obtained for the C-terminal 150 kD Fn fragment which also contained the “Hep II” domain. In contrast, the 29 kD N-terminal “Hep I” Fn fragment bound heparin weakly (Kd =25 μM). The nature of the “high affinity (Kd= 5 nM) heparin binding component is uncertain; it may reflect heparin interaction with soluble multimers present in our PFn preparations Our observations suggest that the Kd=130 nM heparin binding component corresponds to heparin interaction with the C-terminal “Hep II” domain We conclude that the N-terminal “Hep I” domain does not participate significantly in heparin binding to soluble dimeric Fn under physiological conditions, whereas the C-terminal “Hep II” domain dominates such interactions

Résumé :
In the pages that follow, a series of tables and figures display visitor use statistics for calendar year 2023. By documenting visits, hours, and overnight stays across the National Park System, the National Park Service (NPS) Statistical Abstract offers a historical record of visitor use in parks and provides NPS staff and partners with a useful tool for effective management and planning. In 2023, 400 of the 428 National Park System units collected and reported visitor use statistics; the remainder are unable to do so for a variety of reasons such as administration by another agency, non-federal land ownership, or new parks that lack staff and facilities for the management of visitor use statistics. The responsibility for compiling and summarizing visitor use statistics resides with the Social Science Program in the NPS Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate. The Program relies on the conscientious efforts of NPS field personnel to count, record, and report visitor use. This system of collecting and summarizing monthly visitor use data is combined with continuous review and assessment of park visitor use estimation procedures to promote consistency and accuracy of data. Detailed instructions for the units that collect data, monthly visitation summaries, and reports displaying trends in park visitation are available on the NPS Visitor Use Statistics website (https://irma.nps.gov/Stats/)

Davis, Eric L., Yuji Oka, Amit Gal-On, Todd Wehner et Aaron Zelcer. Broad-spectrum Resistance to Root-Knot Nematodes in Transgenic Cucurbits. United States Department of Agriculture, juin 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2013.7593389.bard.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Root-knot nematodes (RKN), Meloidogyne spp., are extremely destructive pathogens of cucurbit crops grown in the United States and Israel. The safety and environmental concerns of toxic nematicides, and limited sources of natural cucurbit resistance to the four major species of Meloidogyne that threaten these crops in Israel and the U.S., have emphasized the use of biotechnology to develop cucurbits with novel RKN resistance. The U.S. scientists have identified over 40 unique RKN parasitism genes that encode nematode secretions involved in successful plant root infection by RKN, and they have demonstrated that expression of a double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) complementary to a RKN parasitism gene (called 16DIO) in Arabidopsis thaliana induced RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated silencing of the RKN16DlO gene and produced transgenic plants with strong resistance to all four major RKN species. The expression 8D05 parasitism gene was found to coincide with the timing of upregulation of NtCel7 promoter (identified to be upregulated in giantcells by US scientists). NtCel7 promoter was used to express the genes at the right time (early stages of infection) and in the right place (giant-cells) in transgenic plants. US partners produced NtCel7 (nematode-induced promoter)-driven 16DlO-RNAi and 8DOS-RNAi constructs, pHANNIBAL 4D03-RNAi construct and modified 16DlO-RNAi construct (for increased RNAi expression and efficacy) for cucurbit transformation in Israel. In Arabidopsis, some 16DlO-RNAi plant lines show greater levels of resistance to M. incognita than others, and within these lines resistance of greater than 90% reduction in infection is observed among almost all replicates in US. The level of observed nematode resistance is likely to be directly correlated with the level of RNAi expression in individual plants. In Israel, all the RKN parasitism genes-RNAi constructs were successfully transformed into cucumber and melon. The transgenic lines were evaluated for expression of the transgene siRNA in leaves and roots. Those displaying transgene siRNA accumulation were passed on for nematode resistance analysis. Rl seedlings from different lines were subjected to evaluation for resistance to M. javanica. None of the lines was resistant to the nematode in contrast with US partner's results in Arabidopsis. This could be for the following reasons: a) The level of transgene siRNA was insufficient in cucumber and tomato to cause resislance. b) 111e nemalode species on cucwnber IIlay be different ur act in a different manner. c) The assay was performed in soil with a high level of nematode inoculation, and not in petri dish, which may not permit the observation of a low level of resistance.
