Résumé :
Abstract Half-disk lasers fabricated by cleaving initial full-disk lasers have an advantage of directional light outcoupling as well as increased output power and efficiency as compared to full-disk lasers of the same diameter. The continuous wave output power of a 200 µm diameter half-disk laser exceeds 70 mW. Quasi single-mode lasing with a high side-mode suppression ratio more than 20 dB is demonstrated for half-disk lasers of various diameters. A maximum 3 dB small signal modulation frequency of 4.9 GHz was measured for a 100 µm in diameter half-disk laser.

Résumé :
Solid state disk lasers have a number of advantages over lasers with a rod active element. In particular, due to efficient heat dissipation, there is no thermal deformation of the active element and its transformation from the optical point of view into a lens. That in turn improves the stability of the generated laser beam and reduces the risk to lose of resonator stability. In addition, disk lasers are able to generate high power at a compact size. However, to ensure the direction of the pump radiation on the active element, disk lasers require a complex mirror system of reflection of the pump beams, and therefore have design limitations on the introduction of pump energy into the active element. This article is dedicated to the development of the design of pumping system, which will increase the intensity of pumping the active element of the disk laser, which will increase the generated power. The article presents the original design of a disk laser with an ellipsoidal illuminator and a tiered system for pumping the active element by diode laser radiation. The results of modeling the heat dissipation from the active element to the refrigerator are presented. The estimation of the efficiency of excitation of the active element when using an ellipsoidal illuminator and the procedure for calculating the parameters of the generated laser beam are given.

Résumé :
Friction/stiction behaviour of ultrahigh-density magnetic disk drives can be controlled by controlling the size and shape of the laser bumps. Tribological behaviour of laser-textured disk surfaces depends on the size and shape of the laser bumps, bump density and operating conditions. In this study, theoretical and experimental analyses have been carried out on nine different laser-textured disk surfaces. Stiction and friction experiments have been carried out on sombrero, V-type and W-type laser-textured disks and these results are compared with theoretical results. A good correlation is obtained between experimental and theoretical results. The effect of laser bump uniformity on critical number of bumps required to prevent plastic deformation and stiction has also been studied.

Résumé :
The fluorescence radiation property at the edge of the thin disk crystal is very important to the design of thin disk lasers. In order to study this effect, in this paper, we established a theoretical model to describe the edge fluorescence radiation process in thin disk lasers. Subsequently, we used a thin disk crystal with indium absorption cladding to quantitatively test the edge fluorescence intensity. The significant difference between measured and simulated data can be described as P (probability value) < 0.1 at the edge when the measured temperature is lower than the melting point of the metal cladding, and P < 0.05 at the pump area. Finally, we analyze the influence of the edge fluorescence radiation on the thin disk laser operation, and the results show that the edge thermal effect will reduce the conversion efficiency of the disk laser by 20%. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first quantitative study on the edge radiation intensity of disk lasers. The research can provide theoretical guidance for the designing and packaging process of crystal elements in thin disk lasers.

Résumé :
Aluminum alloys are extensively used in the automotive industry in response to increasing requirements for weight reduction in car body architecture. Laser welding of Al alloys has many advantages such as low heat input, narrow heat affected zone, minimal thermal distortion and flexibility. Recently, the development of high brightness lasers - thin disk lasers and fiber lasers enable long focal distance welding so that laser remote welding with scanning mirrors can be used in laser welding of Al alloys. In this study, laser remote welding was implemented to a heat shield part of an automobile by utilizing a 4kW disk laser and a 2-axis scanner. By replacing conventional resistance spot welding, the weld flange length could be reduced from 15mm to 8mm and a cycle time for each welding point could also be reduced from 3.5s to 0.6s.

Résumé :
Laser beam welding has become an established joining technique in automotive manufacturing. Common solid-state lasers generate high-quality joints, but they provide low energy efficiency. By contrast, direct diode lasers (DDL) have superior energy efficiency, are cheaper to purchase and additionally require less utility space. To examine the overall performance of direct diode lasers in comparison to disk lasers, welding quality and energy consumption of the two lasers have to be evaluated. Additionally, for this contribution the stability of the DDL’s beam, like temporal variation of focus position and beam shape, is examined. It is found that a focus shift takes place for longer periods of emission, but the variation of the focus diameter in the initial focal plane is negligible. As expected, the direct diode laser consumes less energy than the disk laser for the same output power. Welding experiments are conducted using four different steel alloys that are exemplary for engineering materials used in automotive manufacturing. Metallographic analysis shows that weld seam depths and widths are on average larger using the disk laser. However even with the need for higher output powers to achieve equal seam geometries the DDL consumes less energy and thereby causes less costs.

Résumé :
This work presents experimental studying the effect of processing by severe plastic deformation (SPD) on the thermoelastic and thermoelectric properties of pure aluminum and copper under pulsed laser radiation. The studies were carried out on technical aluminum AD1 (99.3%) and pure copper M1 (99.9%). High pressure torsion (HPT) was used for processing by SPD. After the HPT processing, the materials samples in the form of a plane disk were subjected to pulsed laser radiation focused on the disk center. Pulsed lasers with a wavelength of 1.06 micron and operating in the free laser oscillation mode with pulse duration of 100 microseconds or in the mode of a single pulse with duration of about 10 nanoseconds were used. The thermoelastic and thermoelectric responses of the materials were determined by measuring acoustic waves and the thermoelectric power. The disks with the initial coarse-grained material state were considered as a reference sample, and the disks of the materials after SPD processing were considered as a controlled object. The results demonstrated a very high sensitivity of the parameters of thermoelastic and thermoelectric response to structural changes in the materials. For example, the used HPT mode led to a reduction in the maximum thermoelectric power value for aluminum by 40% and for copper by 35%.

Résumé :
Particulate contamination studies were carried out with laser-textured and mechanically textured magnetic rigid disks and nanosliders. The effects of particle concentration and its size, particle material, duration of exposure to contamination, interface speed and disk textures were studied. The head-disk interface (HDI) durability increased as particle concentration decreased. The effect of different hard-particle materials was attributed to how easily it can form agglomerates. Data indicate that limited-time exposure to a class 10 000 environment will not deter tribological performance of the HDI. In a contaminated environment, head flying in the data zone exhibited higher durability than that in the-lase textured zone. However, the mechanically textured disk and the data zone of laser-textured disks showed comparable durability in the presence of contamination. The HDI damage mechanism and pattern changed as the disk speed changed. A failure mechanism to show how the airborne particles interact with the interface is presented. The effects of the HDI geometry, flying height, pitch angle which controls the air flow pattern govern the failure mechanism in the flying mode.

In this paper, we have demonstrated a 1.3 W green laser using a V-shaped intracavity frequency doubling 1036 nm semiconductor disk laser. The beam quality of the fundamental and second harmonic generation (SHG) laser is investigated. It has been found that the output lasers at the fundamental and SHG wavelength both suffer from reduced beam quality along with power scaling. The measured beam profile is elliptical under high power operation. In order to improve the SHG laser beam, an intracavity aperture is employed to control the mode characteristics of fundamental frequency light. By fine-tuning the aperture, a nearly circular beam profile with improving beam quality and brightness is realized.

Abstract The autogenous laser welding of 2.5 mm thick butt joints of thermomechanically rolled fine-grain steel grade S420MC was investigated. Butt joints were laser welded by the Yb:YAG Disk laser, emitted a circular laser beam with spot diameter of 200 μm at 1.03 μm wavelength, and also by the high power direct diode laser, emitted a rectangular beam with dimension of 1.8x6.8 mm at 808 nm wavelength. Different welding modes were identified for the lasers applied. The conduction welding mode was observed in whole of the diode laser welding parameters. While high quality joints, without any internal defects and characterized with satisfactory mechanical performance were produced in a wide range of parameters. The butt joints produced by Disk laser were welded at keyhole mode. In this case a slight tendency to weld porosity was found.

High-quality factor dielectric microcavities like whispering-gallery-mode resonators can be widely applied in fields such as laser, optical sensor, switch, and filter. We propose the whispering-gallery-mode double-disk cavity comprising dielectric disks apart along the face of the disk. The electric field of each disk with opposite phases was excited; the emitted radiation field was annihilated by destructive interference. We numerically achieved a 5.67-fold enhancement in quality factor at the double-disk cavity with a radius, thickness, and gap distance of 850 nm, 220 nm, and 220 nm, respectively, compared to a single dielectric disk with the same structural conditions.

Résumé :
Thin disk laser is analyzed, assuming that the heat is drained in the same direction, as the optical pulse, withdrawing the stored energy, comes. Amplified spontaneous emission, the background loss, and overheating are taken into account with simple model. The scaling laws of the basic parameters are deduced. For the case of fixed repetition rate, the upper bound of thickness is obtained. Key parameters are suggested. The key energy parameter is promoted as criterion for evaluation of different laser materials for the high energy, high mean power disk lasers. The maximum energy per active element is estimated. For the scaling up the power and/or energy withdrawn from a single active element, the background loss should scale down inversely proportional to the cube of the background loss. This scaling law gives the criterion whether the heat should be drained in the direction orthogonal to the beam that withdraws the energy.

Résumé :
Telecom-band single nanowire lasers made by the bottom-up vapor-liquid-solid approach, which is technologically important in optical fiber communication systems, still remain challenging. Here, we report telecom-band single nanowire lasers operating at room temperature based on multi-quantum-disk InP/InAs heterostructure nanowires. Transmission electron microscopy studies show that highly uniform multi-quantum-disk InP/InAs structure is grown in InP nanowires by self-catalyzed vapor-liquid-solid mode using indium particle catalysts. Optical excitation of individual nanowires yielded lasing in telecom band operating at room temperature. We show the tunability of laser wavelength range in telecom band by modulating the thickness of single InAs quantum disks through quantum confinement along the axial direction. The demonstration of telecom-band single nanowire lasers operating at room temperature is a major step forward in providing practical integrable coherent light sources for optoelectronics and data communication.

Résumé :
It is important to clarify the characteristics of flow-induced vibrations in hard disk drives in order to achieve an ultrahigh magnetic recording density. In particular, it is necessary to reduce the flow-induced disk vibrations referred to as disk flutter. This paper describes the correlation between the disk vibration amplitude and the pressure fluctuation between a pair of high-speed corotating disks. It also reveals the effects of the arm thickness and arm shape on the disk vibrations and the static pressure between the disks. The disk vibrations were measured using a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV). The static pressure downstream of the arm between a pair of narrow disks was measured by a method in which a side-hole needle was used as a measurement probe. In addition, the direction of air flow along the trailing edge of the arm was measured using a hot-wire anemometer. The experimental results revealed that the arm inserted between the disks suppresses the disk vibrations. However, the shape and thickness of the arm did not quantitatively affect the disk vibrations. The root-mean-square (RMS) static pressure fluctuation downstream of the arm decreased remarkably, whereas the mean static pressure increased when the arm was inserted between the disks. Furthermore, the circumferential variations in both the RMS and mean static pressures reduced when the arm was inserted. Therefore, it is suggested that the disk vibrations are excited by an increase in the static pressure fluctuation, mean dynamic pressure, and circumferential variation in the static pressure between the disks. Consequently, the disk vibrations can be suppressed by inserting the arm or a spoiler.

In the article are presented investigations of the reflectance and the absorption coefficient of yttrium partially stabilized zirconia (YPSZ), for 10,6μm wavelength electromagnetic radiation as well as for the wavelengths in the range of 0,5-1,1μm. Based on an experimentally obtained absorption coefficients, the amount of laser power densities absorbed within YPSZ was calculated. Also, experimental investigations with Disk laser and CO2 laser radiation annealing were conducted. It was shown that for different lasers wavelengths and for the same laser beam intensities the microstructural changes in YPSZ are different.

Résumé :
We determined the effect of laser speed on the elastic constants of additively manufactured (AM) 316L stainless steel using resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS). The alloy (316L) has biomechanical applications, such as medical implants. AM disks were manufactured at a constant power of 100 W and varying laser speeds of 800, 1000, and 1200 mm/s. RUS samples were extracted from the disks to determine the effects of fabrication parameters on elastic constants, as well as variations in properties across a single disk. As laser speed increases, the longitudinal (c11) moduli decreases from 284.74 GPa to 226.84 GPa, while the shear (c44) moduli exhibits minimal change. The measurement error in both moduli increases as laser speed decreases, which is attributed to the textured polycrystal nature of the samples built at lower speed. At lower speed, a greater amount of energy is deposited within the volume, allowing grains more time to grow. The grain structure determined by electron backscatter diffraction shows large crystallite formations in the 800 mm/s sample while the 1200 mm/s sample shows more homogenous small-grain distribution, which is expected of an ideal polycrystal. Variations of properties across the disk will also be presented.

Résumé :
This paper presents a numerical investigation on the effect of thermal anisotropy of the top layer alloy on heat transfer and lubricant depletion on the disk surface in a heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) system. The disk consists of multilayer structures and a thin layer of lubricant on the top surface. Cases under different laser powers and initial lubricant film thicknesses are examined. The top-layer alloy thermal anisotropy does show non-negligible effect on the heat transfer and lubricant depletion. With the top-layer alloy being more anisotropic, higher temperature increase and lager lubricant depletion can be observed on the disk surface. The results also show that the thermal anisotropy effect is more significant under a lower laser power but nearly keeps no much difference under different initial lubricant film thicknesses. Thus it is of importance to include the thermal anisotropy effect of the top-layer Co-alloy when simulating the heat transfer and lubricant depletion in practical multilayer HMAR systems, especially for the cases under the condition of lower laser power, as the effect cannot be neglected under such conditions.

Résumé :
The commercial life of optical disks started in the late 1970s with prerecorded, read-only video disks. The video information was stored on the disks in the form of pits with varying lengths aligned in a spiral track, a structure which lends itself to easy mass replication. The pits were recorded in a “master” disk by exposing a positive photoresist to a focused beam of blue or UV light from a gas laser and subsequently developing the resist. Now, some 15 years later, mass-replicated, read-only video and audio disks still form the most important application of optical disk technology. Today a large majority of the corresponding masters are recorded using virtually the same technique. In view of the relative importance of prerecorded disks, it is amazing that so little seems to have changed in the mastering processes. Part of the explanation lies in the fact that the dimensions of the relief structures on the early optical disks were defined by what a player could read using relatively cheap optics, rather than by what could be made in the mastering process. If in the beginning the analog video disk system (Video Long Play or LaserVision) was rather demanding, the digital audio disk (compact disk) (see Figure 1a), introduced later, was a much easier system from a mastering point of view. In that period a trend toward cheaper and faster mastering techniques developed, resulting in a few proposals for direct-effect and direct metal mastering. However, in the meantime very high-quality mastering became necessary for the CD-video system and for preformatted data disks. In the CD-video system, the combination of digital audio and analog video leads in some cases to pits as short as 300 nm (see Figure 1b). On preformatted data disks, wide shallow grooves may have to be combined with narrow deep header pits (Figure 1c).
