Résumé :
The paper deals with the influence of avalanche streamer discharges on aqueous solutions of organic substances such as phenols, methyl-orange and simulating amino acid and protein compounds. Studies have shown the possibility of universal water purification when using gas-discharge decontamination technologies. Complex impact of discharge phenomena, physical and chemical factors, radiation at different frequencies of avalanche streamer discharge lead to degradation of organic and inorganic substances in water impurities. The most frequently used discharges for water purification are electrolyte (discharge in liquid), glow, corona, microwave-frequency discharge excitation in several GHz, barrier discharge and avalanche streamer discharge. It is shown that application of avalanche streamer discharges allows to undertake the decomposition of organic matter in water with decomposition in carbon compounds, gaseous components and water more efficiently and with low cost energy. Applying of a discharge technology is a promising direction of water treatment and industrial wastewater disposal technology development. Energy electric shock changes chemical characteristics of the treated water, affects its Ionic composition, structure of dissolved organic matter, viability of the microorganisms in water without additional chemical reagents.

Résumé :
This review examines the processes of degradation of organic dyes in their aqueous solutions under the action of atmospheric pressure discharges. These processes are important for solving the environmental problem associated with the purification of water from organic pollution. A brief description of the types of discharges used for these purposes is given - dielectric barrier discharge, pulsed corona discharge, gliding arc discharge, direct current glow discharge, diaphragm discharge, and contact glow discharge electrolysis. The results are given on the degree of degradation of more than 30 types of dyes in different types of discharges. The features of comparing different types of discharges in terms of their energy efficiency of the degradation process - the energy spent on the decomposition of one gram of dye - are discussed. The kinetic regularities of the decomposition process and the influence on them of various factors - the initial concentration of the dye, the discharge power, and the pH of the solution are considered. Possibilities of accelerating degradation using homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts are discussed. Possible mechanisms of the ongoing processes and the participation in them of active particles formed in solution under the action of a discharge (OH, HO2 and ozone radicals) are analyzed.

Résumé :
The task of CO2 decomposition is one of the components of the problem associated with global warming. One of the promising directions of its solution is the use of low-temperature plasma. For these purposes, different types of discharges are used. Microwave discharge in liquid hydrocarbons has not been studied before for this problem. This paper presents the results of a study of microwave discharge products in liquid Nefras C2 80/120 (petroleum solvent, a mixture of light hydrocarbons with a boiling point from 33 to 205 °C) when CO2 is introduced into the discharge zone, as well as the results of a study of the discharge by optical emission spectroscopy and shadow photography methods. The main gas products are H2, C2H2, C2H4, CH4, CO2, and CO. No oxygen was found in the products. The mechanisms of CO2 decomposition in the discharge are considered. The formation of H2 occurs simultaneously with the decomposition of CO2 in the discharge, with a volumetric rate of up to 475 mL/min and energy consumption of up to 81.4 NL/kWh.

Résumé :
Partial discharge detection is an important means of insulation diagnosis of electrical equipment. To effectively suppress the periodic narrowband and white noise interferences in the process of partial discharge detection, a partial discharge interference suppression method based on singular value decomposition (SVD) and improved empirical mode decomposition (IEMD) is proposed in this paper. First, the partial discharge signal with periodic narrowband interference and white noise interference x(t) is decomposed by SVD. According to the distribution characteristics of single values of periodic narrowband interference signals, the singular value corresponding to periodic narrowband interference is set to zero, and the signal is reconstructed to eliminate the periodic narrowband interference in x(t). IEMD is then performed on x(t). Intrinsic mode function (IMF) is obtained by EMD, and based on the improved 3σ criterion, the obtained IMF components are statistically processed and reconstructed to suppress the influence of white noise interference. The methods proposed in this paper, SVD and SVD + EMD, are applied to process the partial discharge simulation signal and partial discharge measurement signal, respectively. We calculated the signal-to-noise ratio, normalized correlation coefficient, and mean square error of the three methods, respectively, and the results show that the proposed method suppresses the periodic narrowband and white noise interference signals in partial discharge more effectively than the other two methods.

Résumé :
The kinetics of decomposition of ibuprofen in its aqueous solution by the action of atmosphericpressure direct-current discharge in ambient air has been studied. The treated solution served as both the cathode and the anode of the discharge system. Degradation rates and effective degradation rate constants have been determined. Based on these data, the energy yields and degrees of destruction were calculated for various discharge powers (discharge currents). Discharges in a liquid cathode and anode differ little in the energy yields of degradation. But the rates and rate constants of degradation in the liquid cathode are higher than in the liquid anode. Therefore, the complete destruction of ibuprofen in the liquid cathode is achieved within shorter discharge times. A comparison is made of the destruction efficiencies for the cases of solution treatment using glow, dielectric barrier, and pulsed corona discharges.

Résumé :
Operation feature extraction of flood discharge structures under ambient excitation has attracted increasing attention in recent years. However, the vibration signal of flood discharge structures is a nonstationary random signal with low signal-to-noise ratio, which is mixed with lots of low-frequency water flow noise and high-frequency white noise. It is difficult to excavate the hidden vibration characteristic information accurately. To solve the problem, we propose a novel denoising method called improved variational mode decomposition. As an improved method of variational mode decomposition, improved variational mode decomposition can effectively determine the decomposition mode number of variational mode decomposition by using the mutual information method. Furthermore, improved variational mode decomposition is combined with a variance dedication rate to extract the overall operation characteristic information of the structure. In order to evaluate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed improved variational mode decomposition–variance dedication rate method, we compare the denoising results of simulation signals produced by an improved variational mode decomposition–variance dedication rate with those produced by digital filter, wavelet threshold, empirical mode decomposition, empirical wavelet transform, complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with adaptive noise, and improved variational mode decomposition methods and find a better performance of the improved variational mode decomposition–variance dedication rate method. In addition, the proposed method is applied to the Three Gorges Dam, and the results show that the improved variational mode decomposition–variance dedication rate method can effectively remove heavy background noises and extract the operation characteristic information of the flood discharge structure, which contributes to health monitoring and damage identification of the flood discharge structure.

Résumé :
For the first time, experiments were carried out on the decomposition of carbon dioxide in a plasma torch maintained by continuous focused gyrotron radiation with a frequency of 263 GHz in an argon flow at atmospheric pressure. It is shown that, despite the decrease in the electron density by a factor of 5, when 3% carbon dioxide is added to the plasma-forming gas, it is possible to achieve its degree of conversion of 22% due to the nonequilibrium nature of maintaining the discharge. Thus, the prospects of using high-power electromagnetic radiation in the sub-terahertz range for solving plasma-chemical problems of the decomposition of highly stable molecules have been demonstrated. Résumé :
This study examines the sustainable decomposition reactions of benzene using non-thermal plasma (NTP) in a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor. The aim is to investigate the factors influencing benzene decomposition process, including input power, concentration, and residence time, through kinetic modeling, reactor performance assessment, and machine learning techniques. To further enhance the understanding and modeling of the decomposition process, the researchers determine the apparent decomposition rate constant, which is incorporated into a kinetic model using a novel theoretical plug flow reactor analogy model. The resulting reactor model is simulated using the ODE45 solver in MATLAB, with advanced machine learning algorithms and performance metrics such as RMSE, MSE, and MAE employed to improve accuracy. The analysis reveals that higher input discharge power and longer residence time result in increased tar analogue compound (TAC) decomposition. The results indicate that higher input discharge power leads to a significant improvement in the TAC decomposition rate, reaching 82.9%. The machine learning model achieved very good agreement with the experiments, showing a decomposition rate of 83.01%. The model flagged potential hotspots at 15% and 25% of the reactor’s length, which is important in terms of engineering design of scaled-up reactors.

Résumé :
Abstract The type and content of SF6 decomposition products are directly related to the type, location and degree of fault. Based on the analysis of the abnormal SF6 gas decomposition product content and discharge type of 126kV Porcelain Column type circuit breaker, the potential fault of the circuit breaker is judged to be suspension potential discharge fault. After disassembling the circuit breaker, it is found that the abnormal phase of the insulation rod is deformed, the pin become thin, and there are solid decomposition products, the sulfides and fluoride, which are mainly composed of iron, aluminum, chromium and manganese, further confirm that the potential fault of the circuit breaker is suspension potential discharge fault. The forming process and reaction mechanism of the suspended potential discharge fault are analyzed. Once the fault occurs, its function will promote the development of the fault. The influence of the suspension potential discharge fault on the performance of the circuit breaker is also analyzed. When the suspension potential discharge fault exists, it will cause the abnormality and even affect the normal operation of the circuit breake.

Résumé :
This paper presents the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles using the atmospheric microplasma (AMP). The properties of iron oxide nanoparticles synthesized using AMP are compared with particles (i) formed in as-prepared solution and (ii) prepared using thermal decomposition method. Iron oxide nanoparticles prepared by all the 3 treatment methods exhibit quite soft ferromagnetic properties with coercivities less than 10 G. The AMP synthesis technique was found to be more efficient and better than thermal decomposition method due to ultra-shorter experiment time (around 2.5 min) as compared to 90 min required for thermal decomposition method. Moreover, AMP synthesized nanoparticles are better isolated and of smaller size than thermal decomposition ones. The effect of plasma discharge timings on synthesized nanoparticles has also been studied in this work. Coercivity of synthesized nanoparticles decreases with the increasing plasma discharge timings from 3 to 10 min. The nanoparticles synthesized using plasma discharge timing of 10 min exhibit the smallest coercivity of around 3 G. This suggests a high possibility of achieving super-paramagnetic nanoparticles by optimizing the plasma discharge timings of AMP.

Résumé :
The aim of this paper is to investigate the process of growth of different carbon deposits in low-current electrical microdischarges in argon with an admixture of cyclohexane as the carbon feedstock. The method of synthesis of carbon structures is based on the decomposition of hydrocarbons in low-temperature plasma generated by an electrical discharge in gas at atmospheric pressure. The following various types of microdischarges generated at this pressure were tested for both polarities of supply voltage with regard to their applications to different carbon deposit synthesis: Townsend discharge, pre-breakdown streamers, breakdown streamers and glow discharge. In these investigations the discharge was generated between a stainless-steel needle and a plate made of a nickel alloy, by electrode distances varying between 1 and 15 mm. The effect of distance between the electrodes, discharge current and hydrocarbon concentration on the obtained carbon structures was investigated. Carbon nanowalls and carbon microfibers were obtained in these discharges.

Résumé :
In this paper, the amount of SF6 decomposition gases due to the partial discharge (PD) was studied in the SF6 gas-insulated transformer. The long-term PD degradation experiment was performed while controlling the discharge magnitude using the surface discharge, and the gas generation amount was measured by using gas chromatography for SO2F2, SOF2, SO2, CO, and CF4. In addition, to investigate the relationship between the partial discharge energy and the decomposed gas generation amount, partial discharge energy was calculated by a data processing program and converted to the unit of joule per mole. With the finite element method (FEM), the electric field distribution and SF6 gas decomposition mechanism were explained for the partial discharge energy effect on the gas generation. This study helps understand the relationship between the partial discharge energy and the decomposed gas generation ratio with the experimental results and can be used for the diagnosis of PD and maintenance process for the gas-insulated transformers.

Résumé :
This research introduces a hybrid model for forecasting river flood events with an example of the Mohawk River in New York. Time series analysis and artificial neural networks are combined for the explanation and forecasting of the daily water discharge using hydrogeological and climatic variables. A low pass filter (Kolmogorov–Zurbenko filter) is applied for the decomposition of the time series into different components (long, seasonal, and short-term components). For the prediction of the water discharge time series, each component has been described by applying the multiple linear regression models (MLR), and the artificial neural network (ANN) model. The MLR retains the advantage of the physical interpretation of the water discharge time series. We prove that time series decomposition is essential before the application of any model. Also, decomposition shows that the Mohawk River is affected by multiple time scale components that contribute to the hydrologic cycle of the included watersheds. Comparison of the models proves that the application of the ANN on the decomposed time series improves the accuracy of forecasting flood events. The hybrid model which consists of time series decomposition and artificial neural network leads to a forecasting up to 96% of the explanation for the water discharge time series.

Résumé :
Abstract This paper has carried out the test results of SF6 gas decomposition products and the dielectric spectrum detection, proposed method for the identifying equipment defects based on decomposition products, and the partial discharge detection and diagnosis method for the equipment discharge defects. Combining the above two methods, the GIS discharge defects are comprehensively evaluated by decomposition products and partial discharge detection, achieving the type prediction of latent faults in operating switch-gear. In the aspect of vibration signal analysis, this paper conducts the wavelet analysis of the vibration signals and obtains frequency spectrum results under multi-layer wavelet decomposition. In the aspect of dielectric spectrum analysis, a model of three HN function superposition was used to fit the experimental data to verify the validity of the model, and the characteristic parameters such as the DC conductivity were extracted. It was found their dependence on temperature basically conformed to the Arrhenius formula. On this basis, the thermal aging test platform for the epoxy resin samples was established, and an accelerated thermal aging experiment was conducted at the temperature of 115 °C. The dielectric response test system was used to measure dielectric spectra of the samples with different aging times, compare the dielectric spectra at different aging times, and analyze the reasons for the differences.

Résumé :
This article aims to analyze the alteration in water discharge due to the building of one of the largest dams in Romania. Modifications in the hydrological patterns of the studied river were emphasized by a complex technique that includes decomposition models of the series into trends, seasonal indices, and random components, as well as into Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs). The Mann–Kendall trend test indicates the existence of different positive slopes for the subseries S1 and S2 (before and after the inception of the Siriu dam, respectively) built from the raw series, S. The stationarity hypothesis was rejected for all series. The multifractal analysis shows two different patterns of the data series. After decomposing the subseries S1 and S2, it resulted that the seasonality indices are not the same. Moreover, the seasonal variations decreased after building the dam. Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) unveils different short- and long-term patterns of the series before and after building the dam, concluding that there is a significant alteration in the river discharge after the dam’s inception.

Résumé :
A solid analytic procedure of Gas insulated switchgear condition checking is utilized in this studies as a part of exploration for the detection of sulphur hexafluoride gas (SF6) decomposition by-product because of its high affectability, reliability and anti-electromagnetic obstruction. This is known as chemical decomposition by-product method. A simulated coaxial deterioration chamber was designed and used on the high voltage electrode to re-enact the decomposition of SF6 under the impact of protrusion defect that generates partial discharge in the coaxial chamber at a pressure of 0.2MPa.The chamber is energised at 50kv for the period of 50 hours and the generated partial discharge simulate the decomposition of SF6 gas. The deterioration decomposition products SO2, SOF2, SO2F2, SO2F10, SiF4, CO, C3F8, C2F6 were detected offline by FTIR spectrometer. These deteriorated items and its concentration can be utilized to recognize and distinguish the type and the magnitude of fault in gas insulated switchgear (protrusion fault) before failure occur for the aim of preventive maintenance.

Résumé :
To reveal the microscopic mechanism of synergetic thermal–electrical degradation during a partial discharge process in epoxy insulation materials, the decomposition of crosslinked epoxy resin is investigated using reactive molecular dynamics simulations under high electric field and thermal degradation conditions. Bond-boost acceleration method is employed in reactive molecular dynamics simulations to successfully establish epoxy polymer models with a crosslink degree of 93%. Active molecular species derived from electrical partial discharges are considered in the current work. Small molecule products and decomposition temperature in the degradation process under an electric field are calculated to elucidate the effect of nitric acid and ozone molecules, being the active products generated by electrical partial discharges, on the synergetic thermal–electrical degradation of epoxy resin. Both nitric acid and ozone exacerbate thermal impact decomposition of crosslinked epoxy polymer by decreasing initial decomposition temperature from 1050 K to 940 K and 820 K, respectively. It is found that these active products can oxidize hydroxyl groups and carbon–nitrogen bridge bonds in epoxy molecular chains, leading to the aggravation of epoxy resin decomposition, as manifested by the significant increase in the decomposed molecular products. In contrast, thermal degradation of the epoxy resin without the active species is not expedited by increasing electric field. These strongly oxidative molecules are easily reduced to negative ions and able to obtain kinetic energies from electric field, which result in chemical corrosion and local temperature increase to accelerate decomposition of epoxy insulation materials.

Résumé :
The application of high-voltage discharge plasma for water pollutant decomposition and the synthesis of nanoparticles under a high-pressure argon gas environment (~4 MPa) was demonstrated. The experiments were carried out in a batch-type system at room temperature with a pulsed DC power supply (15.4 to 18.6 kV) as a discharge plasma source. The results showed that the electrode materials, the pulsed repetition rates, the applied number of pulses, and the applied voltages had a significant effect on the degradation reactions of organic compounds. Furthermore, carbon solid materials from glycine decomposition were generated during the high-voltage discharge plasma treatment under high-pressure conditions, while Raman spectra and the HRTEM images indicated that titanium dioxide with a brookite structure and titanium carbide nanoparticles were also formed under these conditions. It was concluded that this process is applicable in practice and may lead to advanced organic compound decomposition and metal-based nanoparticle synthesis technologies.

Résumé :
Discharge in liquid is a promising technique to produce nanomaterials by electrode erosion. Although its feasibility was demonstrated in many conditions, the production of nanoalloys by in-liquid discharges remains a challenge. Here, we show that spark discharge in liquid cyclohexane that is in contact with conductive solution, made of a combination of Ni-nitrate and/or Fe-nitrate and/or Co-nitrate, is suitable to produce nanoalloys (<10 nm) of Ni-Fe, Ni-Co, Co-Fe, and Ni-Co-Fe. The nanoparticles are synthesized by the reduction of metal ions during discharge, and they are individually embedded in C-matrix; this latter originates from the decomposition of cyclohexane. The results open novel ways to produce a wide spectrum of nanoalloys; they are needed for many applications, such as in catalysis, plasmonic, and energy conversion.
