Résumé :
The time and effort required for maintenance of an automobile system are highly dependent on its disassemblability, which is one of the most important attributes of its maintainability. To evaluate the disassemblability index, i.e. to measure the ease of disassembly, the disassemblability factors (both the design factors and the contextual factors) of an automobile system are identified. These and their interrelations are modelled by considering their structure using the graph theory. The directed graph (digraph) of the disassemblability of the automobile system is defined; the nodes of this represent its disassemblability factors, while the edges represent their degrees of influence. An equivalent matrix of the digraph establishes the system’s disassemblability function which characterizes the disassemblability of the system, leading to development of the disassemblability index. A high value of the disassemblability index indicates that it is very easy to remove or replace parts. The disassemblability index ratio is used to compare the actual conditions of disassembly with the ideal conditions of disassembly. A case study of an automobile gearbox is illustrated using the step-by-step procedure of the proposed methodology of disassemblability. The proposed methodology is helpful to evaluate and compare various alternative designs of the automobile system and, therefore, can aid the design and development of automobile systems from the disassembly viewpoint.

Résumé :
In view of the fuzziness and uncertainty characteristics of the index and evaluation incompatibility in the disassembly evaluation process, the disassembly evaluation model of fuzzy matter-element analysis based on entropy was proposed. Firstly, the fuzzy matter-element matrix and weight matrix was established, based on the analysis of the factors having influences on disassemblability. Then the dependent degree of each scheme was calculated to rank disassemblability of the product design schemes. Additionally, the index weight was determined by the method of entropy, which can effectively avoid interference of subjective factors in the process of weight determination. Finally, an example of disassemblability evaluation was given to show the effectiveness of the method.

Résumé :
This paper presents a method for the automatic generation of robotic assembly sequences based on the verification of a disassemblability for a part to be disassembled. To derive the disassemblability of a candidate part, we first inference collision free assembly directions by extracting separable directions for the part and calculating the separability which gives information as to how the part can be easily separated. Using the result, we determine the disassemblability defined in terms of the separability and stability costs. The separability cost represents a facility of the part disassembly operation, while the stability cost represents a degree of the stability for the base assembly motion which gives a guidance for design of jig/fixture. The proposed method provides a potentially local optimal solution for finding a cost effective assembly plan, and the feasibility of generating robot motion programs by evaluating separable directions in flexible manufacturing applications. A case study is given to illustrate the concepts and procedure of the proposed scheme.

Résumé :
Disassembly Sequence planning is the important module of virtual maintenance. Its foundational task is to test the disassemblability of parts, find out all the feasible disassembly sequences of targeted parts and search for the near-optimal disassembly sequence. In the paper, the spherical algorithm is used to test the disassemblability of parts. And then the disassembly direction of parts is determined by rules which are the simplified version of Gaussian map approach. Thus the near-optimal disassembly sequence is found out by optimizing all feasible disassembly sequences of targeted parts by ant colony algorithm. The simulation result of the sequence optimization proves to be the same with manual calculation considering comprehensive cost of the change of disassembly tools and disassembly directions. The set of approaches can be reference for disassembly sequence planning of large-scale mechanical products.

Résumé :
Application of axiomatic design (AD) for the purpose of enhancing end-of-life recovery potential of a product has been the main focus of this paper. To demonstrate the usage of AD in this particular area, a case study that involves keypad assemblies of mobile phones is presented. The functional requirements (FR) of the two assemblies were defined differently (only Handset 2 involves refurbishment-related FRs). Using evaluation approach presented by Kwak and Kim (2010), it can be observed that when recovery-related requirements are omitted, application of AD produces a keypad assembly that fulfills the FRs derived from customer needs with more complicated product architecture. In contrast, when recovery-related FRs are included during problem definition using axiomatic approach, the disassemblability of the resulted keypad is improved and thus increasing recovery potential in the event of replacing defective keypad, while satisfying product-related FRs.

Résumé :
AbstractWaste management is gaining very high importance in recent years. As automotive is one of the most critical sectors worldwide, which is rapidly increasing, the management of end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) gains importance day by day. Due to legislation and new regulations, actors like users, producers, and treatment facilities are being conferred new responsibilities in the ELV management process. Besides, the ELV management is of vital importance for environment conservation, circular economy and sustainable development. All of these reasons are making the ELV management such a crucial issue to study. Today, the ELV management is a well-positioned and emergent research area. However, the available review papers are focused only on a small area of the ELV management, such as reverse logistics, recovery infrastructure, disassemblability, etc. Besides, a review of state-of-the-art mathematical models for the ELV management is still missing. This paper aims to provide an extensive content analysis overview of studies on the ELV management. A total of 232 studies published in the period 2000–2019 are collected, categorized, reviewed and analyzed. A critical review of the published literature is provided. Gaps in the literature are identified to clarify and suggest future research directions. This review can provide a source of references, valuable insights, and opportunities for researchers interested in the ELV management and inspire their additional attention.

Résumé :
AbstractIn 2021, sales of electric bicycles in Germany increased compared to the previous year, leading to a 43% share of electric bicycles in the total German bicycle market. The German Bicycle Industry Association (ZIV) expects this growth to continue and that by 2025 every second bicycle sold in Germany will have an electric motor. Therefore, due to the increasing number of sales, both the built-in resources and the possible treatments after the use phase need to be considered regarding sustainable market development. In this context, remanufacturing is one promising end-of-life strategy that enables a new life cycle of products and components, thus reducing the consumption of natural resources and minimizing waste production. The used products are restored to their original conditions by disassembling, cleaning, sorting, reworking, and reassembling. Disassembly is a decisive process step as it creates the prerequisites for all further steps in the process chain and significantly determines the economic feasibility of a remanufacturing process. Therefore, this paper aims to evaluate the ease of disassembly of electric bicycle motors and thus determine their suitability for remanufacturing. To evaluate the disassemblability, the ease of Disassembly Metric (eDiM), a quantitative assessment method for evaluating disassembly effort, was adapted to the needs of the electric bicycle motors. The method was finally applied to five electric bicycle motors from established manufacturers and assessed their ease of disassembly. The results show that the electric bicycle motors can be disassembled without significant damage and classified as suitable for remanufacturing.

Résumé :
The absence of existing standards for product recovery planning and the associated difficulty in prioritising the conflicting design requirements are among the main challenges faced during product design. In this paper, a concept for the Design for Multiple Life-Cycles (DFMLC) is proposed to address this situation. The objective of the DFMLC model is to assist designers in evaluating design attributes of Multiple Life-Cycle Products (MLCP) at the early design stage. The methodology adopted for the evaluation of MLCP design strategies has been based on a modified Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Two mapping matrices of the design guidelines and design strategies concerning MLCP design attributes were developed for the modified AHP model. Disassemblability (> 21 %) was found to be the most important design element for MLCP followed by serviceability (> 20 %) and reassembly (> 12 %).

Résumé :
It is challenging for maintenance of activities to be assured during products’ life cycle when poor maintenance is the case. Poor maintenance of engineered products will lead to an increment in cost and time is fundamental in the development of maintainability tasks for engineering firms. Maintenance design had played a significant role in complex designing of engineering products. This research presents a critical approach to evaluate and determine a maintainability index using the assembly principle. Normally, time is a critical indicator and parameter being utilized to measure maintenance; however, minimal efforts have been focused on assembly components and the principle of assembly. In the past literature works, customer study and survey on the effects of operators’ skills have been done. In this research, maintainability index is determined. Every assembly type is weighted with reference to features such as assembly direction, costs and disassemblability. Resultantly, this research seeks to enhance the efficiency of maintenance of engineered products.

Résumé :
AbstractThe design of circular products is gaining relevance among academics, practitioners, and industry as a critical step to face material scarcity, the unsustainability of industrial processes, and excessive waste generation. Therefore, product design is a powerful research field to promote material, component, and product circularity throughout several lifecycles. However, there is a lack of formal methods to measure the circularity of products, especially from the early design stages. Therefore, this paper proposes a diagnostic tool for measuring circularity, identifying potential improvement opportunities, and redesigning interventions in the conceptual design phase. The tool consists of eight single indicators that measure disassemblability, reassemblability, durability, modularity, simplicity, standardization, commonality, relative costs, and the number of secondary functions of products. A case study is presented to validate the tool, considering several improvement scenarios around the 6R strategies. Finally, a list of redesign interventions for each improvement scenario was assembled as a primary output of the proposed tool.

Résumé :
The goal of this research is to develop a method and tool (a) to estimate disassembly time automatically from early embodiment design based CAD model and (b) to provide design suggestions to improve product disassemblability. Disassembly is a critical process in the end-of-life (EOL) stage of a product. It is usually followed by sorting and then by material recovery for recycling or part recovery for reuse or remanufacturing. Manual estimation of disassembly time, through physical prototype disassembly or through Boothroyd and Dewhurst system, is time consuming and is not applicable in the early design stage. In this research, graph based data structures and related metrics are utilized to estimate complete and selective disassembly time at embodiment design stage. Selective disassembly is important when a single part of subassembly is to be recovered while the rest of the product is to be discarded. Selective disassembly time is estimated by merging particular nodes in assembly and bipartite graph and then recomputing the graph metrics. The method and algorithm presented in this paper is implemented using SolidWorks application programming interface (API) in Visual C#. Results are compared with the results obtained by Boothroyd and Dewhurst method, the error range is reasonable.
