Texte intégralThe light-matter coupling has been studied during the previous and the present centuries because of the plethora of different phenomena achievable depending on the coupling strength. The knowledge of the mechanisms ruling this coupling, and the dynamics of the involved states could find applications in photonics, solar cells, in the whole emerging panorama of the quantum technologies and, overall, wherever it becomes relevant to control the energy flux either temporally and spatially, even at the nanometric scale. Among the systems exploited to generate hybrid light-matter states, the class of Colloidal Plexcitonic Materials (CPMs) is defined as the assembly of coupled colloidal plasmonic nanoparticles and organic dyes. CPMs are cheap, easy to characterize, and their synthesis is easy to scale up. However, to date, only a limited number of studies have been devoted to the investigation of the optimization of their properties and their dynamics in different coupling regimes. With this Thesis, I want to bring my contribution to both these aspects. For this reason, I analysed the design of these materials either by cataloguing and interpreting the existing literature, and by preparing two new families of CPMs. The study of the dynamics was thus focussed on these families, sifted with the state-of-the-art ultrafast electronic spectroscopy techniques. Overall, the knowledge gained studying the design properties and the dynamics of these systems revealed that, first, these two aspects are strongly correlated, and second, that these materials are highly versatile. Indeed, their design has been found to play a central role in the light-matter strength of interaction and coupling. Moreover, again with the fine tuning of these materials, it was possible to modulate their relaxation mechanisms: their lifetimes could be increased up to two orders of magnitude and, mostly, their quantum nature can be engineered.

Texte intégralThe thesis is dedicated to the comparative study of construction techniques dating from late antiquity and Romanesque (end of 4th-12th century), with particular attention to the religious buildings in Milan. The main objective was to represent the evolutionary lines of the construction techniques and to identify the presence of technical characteristics that have a specific age-typology meaning. The contradictory interpretative hypotheses and the lack of up-to date - in terms of methodology - investigations within the complex and extensive literature on the most known medieval basilicas in Milan has inspired this investigation. For this reason, the first part of the work treats the definition of the history of the published studies on the archaeological and architectural subjects, which have represented the reference for the identification of the masonry samples to be analyzed. As part of this section it was necessary the drafting of a description of the method used. With regard to the analysis of structural clay material, such process provided for the application - on an experimental basis on a so extensive investigation - of the metric-age analysis method to the recovered material. The second part of the thesis concerned the analysis of the main architectural complexes examined (S. Giovanni alle Fonti, S. Tecla, S. Simpliciano, S. Nazario Maggiore, St. Ambrose, St. Eustorgio), performed through dedicated files for the classification of former historic-archaeological data, of the masonry and the stone and brick samples tested, and of the results of the metric analysis. Each identified construction phase was then further investigated in specific sections where the results are gathered. The third and final part of the work concerns the discussion of the developed age-typologies of the construction materials (opus latericium, opus spicatum latericium and works in spolia), the main age-typology indicators identified and the different ways they changed over time. The research has opened up many scenarios for further studies, in relation to the individual monuments treated but also to broader issues in the sector of the Middle Ages building activity, as discussed in the final section.

Abstract: Fatigue of optical Fibers is one of the factors that should be analysed in a optical cable project. This phenornenon can be resumed in the grow of flaws, through chemical attack. Ions of water are mainly responsible for this processo. Several papers on the subject are presently available, where the authors are dealing wi th the case of high strength samples. They extrapolate linearly their data to long times (twenty years) and low stress. Contrary to this procedure we perfonn an experiment, without selecting the strength of the samples. We divide the data in three groups of low, medium and high strenth samples. From our set of data, we can establish a comparison of the relation between stress and time for the above three group of data and verify if the lineari ty of the fatigue curve for long times is satisfied

Abstract: This work presents a dynamic formulation of the boundary element method for stress and failure criterion analyses of anisotropic thin plates. Formulations use elastostatic fundamental solutions and inertia terms are treated as body forces. Domain integrals that come from body forces are transformed into boundary integrals using the radial integration method (RIM). In the RIM, the augmented thin plate spline is used as the aproximation function. A formulation for transient analysis is implemented. The time integration is carried out using the Houbolt method. Integral equations for the second derivatives of deflection are developed and all derivatives of fundamental solutions are computed analitically. Only the boundary is discretized in the formulation. Numerical results show good agreement with results available in literature as well as finite element results

Abstract: This work presents dynamic formulations of the boundary element method for the analysis of anisotropic thin plates. Formulations use elastostatic fundamental solutions and inertia terms are treated as body forces. Domain integrals that come from body forces are transformed into boundary integrals using the dual reciprocity boundary element method (DRM) and the radial integration method (RIM). In the DRM, a particular solution is chosen and a approximation function is obtained using the equilibrium equation. In the RIM, four different approximations functions are used. Formulations for modal and transient analysis are implemented. In the modal analysis, the integral formulation is transformed in a eigen-value and eigen-vector problem where the eigen-values are related to natural frequencies and the eigen-values stand for vibration shape modes. In the transient analysis, the time integration is carried out using the Houbolt method. Only the boundary is discretized in all implemented formulations. Numerical results show good agreement with results available in literature as well as finite element results.

Abstract: This work presents an analysis of dynamic anisotropic problems using the boundary element method. A boundary element formulation is developed using elastostatic fundamental solutions and the domain integraIs, which come from the inertial terms, are transformed into boundary integrals using the dual reciprocity boundary element method. The developed formulation is applied to the computation of displacement and stress fields in orthotropic rotating discs, to modal analysis of orthotropic structures, and to the analysis of anisotropic and composite laminate plate under time dependent loads. Furthermore, crack problems are treated using either the sub-region method or the dual boundary element method. The dynamic stress intensity factors are computed using traction singular quarter point elements as well as discontinuous quadratic elements. In the analysis of transient problems, direct time integration and Laplace transformation are carried out. The numerical results are presented to quasi-isotropic, orthotropic and anisotropic problems. It is analysed the influence of internal nodes and meshes in the accuracy of results. In transient problems, the influences of the size of time step and number of Laplace parameters are analysed taking into account the reduction of numerical dumping. The results are compared with other results from literature showing good agreement. New problems are proposed and analysed.

Rotor. Autovalor. Material viscoelástico.
Abstract: The instability in high-speed rotors is one of the main causes of their problems, which may lead to catastrophic rotor failure or premature weakening. One way to reduce this problem is the addition of damping in the bearings. The use of viscoelastic materials (VEM) for vibration control, either through isolation or dynamic neutralizers, has been applied with relative success in the last years, because, besides its high capacity to dissipate vibrational energy, the VEM have lower initial costs of implementation and maintenance. However, the models used to describe the dynamic behavior of such materials with accuracy lead to complex stiffness matrices as function of frequency and temperature. One way to verify the instability of a system is to check the real part of the associated eigenvalues. In this case, this problem should be solved in the state space, a dimensional space, where is the number of degrees of freedom or natural frequencies. In numerical models involving matrices with real coefficients, it is possible to observe in the state space that the eigenvalues appear with double multiplicity and complex conjugate pairs. On the other hand, when using the fractional-derivative model describing the dynamic behavior of viscoelastic materials (polymers, rubbers and so on) the matrix has complex coefficients. In this case, the eigenvalues should be in some way related by redundant information that may appear in complex conjugate pairs and repeated, and also in complex and opposite pairs, as has been observed in some numerical simulations and previous work. If this is the case, a simple inspection of the real part of the eigenvalues cannot be performed, since the numeric codes could not determine which eigenvalue is physically relevant. Within this context, the aim of this work is to propose a method for accurately estimate the dynamic instability of rotors when they are built with viscoelastic materials. For that, it is proposed to monitor the trajectory of eigenvalues in Laplacian plan. Starting from an equilibrium point, when the trajectory of eigenvalues crosses the axis of the imaginary part, the system will become unstable. To confirm this proposal, it is considered a system with hysteretic damping, which is solved in the time domain to some pre-determined speed. Thus, the method shows satisfactory results, when taken into account a special case. Key-words: Instability. Rotor. Eigenvalue. Viscoelastic material.

Texte intégralEver since its invention, the Li-ion battery has dominated the market of electrochemical storage systems, thanks to its outstanding properties in terms of energy and power density. However, the fact that this technology is inextricably linked to non-homogenously distributed and rare resources, mostly lithium and cobalt, makes it essential to have alternatives, if not to completely replace it at least to diversify the market and reduce the dependence on the aforementioned rare resources. Two examples of such alternatives are the Na-ion battery and the electrochemical double-layer capacitor. These devices have the chance to compete with LIBs in some situations but both of them could greatly benefit from an increase in their energy density. Also, monitoring the evolution of their performances should be considered a priority in order to get deeper insights on how to improve them so to make them comparable to LIBs. The doctoral research here described was focused on two main objectives: proposing ways to improve the energy density of storage systems (NIBs and EDLCs) and suggesting a new technique to monitor such devices operando: the dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Fabricating high potential electrodes is a way to improve the energy storage capabilities of a Na-ion battery. In this thesis, Na3V2(PO4)2F3, an active material able to store sodium-ions at a mean potential as high as 3.8 V vs Na+/Na, was synthesised. This material was used to fabricate self-standing massive electrodes (active mass loading: 25 mg cm-2), which proved to be a very interesting method to improve the energy density. NVPF was also tested as an actual cathode in a full sodium-ion cell so to prove its high potential and relative issues. To improve EDLCs energy densities, highly concentrated solutions of potassium acetate in water were prepared and studied from their physicochemical and electrochemical characterization to the use of the highest concentrated ones (water-in-salt electrolyte) in symmetric carbon-based EDLCs. Such solutions proved to be able to increase both the capacitance and the maximum reachable potential difference between the two electrodes, resulting in higher energy densities compared to conventional electrolytes (e.g. 6M KOH solution in water). Finally, dynamic electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was evaluated as a method to study NIBs and EDLCs while cycling. Two systems, an aqueous EDLC and an insertion material for NIBs, were analysed with dEIS: a technique able to monitor the temporal changes in the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy while a device undergoes a cycling process. This approach proved to be doable for both potentiodynamic and galvanostatic techniques, allowing to probe the impedance of the single electrodes even in experimental conditions similar to those with which a real device operates.

Specifically, the activation energy of the rotation increases as a function of the quantity of gas in the pores. To better understand this interaction, the knowledge of the behavior of gases in porous materials is fundamental. I turned my attention to the study of xenon and CO2 motion in different materials. The combined use of NMR and ab initio calculations proved to be fundamental for understanding these phenomena and it was possible to reveal particular characteristics both of the gases and of the materials. The complexity of the diffusion within the channels has also been presented in unusual ways as the helicoidal motion of carbon dioxide imposed by the electrostatic potential. To continue the study of pore gases, I characterized several porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with the hyperpolarized xenon technique. This not only allowed me to accurately measure the pore size but also to calculate the interaction energy between the xenon and the channel walls. To expand my knowledge on hyperpolarization as an NMR technique, I spent six months at the group of Prof. L. Emsley in Lausanne learning dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) as well as its application to different materials.

Texte intégralThe rule of the interface in systems including polymer composites and block-‐ copolymer interacting with biomembrane has been investigated by computational approach. In particular, for the polymer composite investigation, a system composed of PMMA embedding a silica nanoparticle of 3 nm (diameter), and an analogue system made of MMA and silica nanoparticle have been simulated. The structuration of both, PMMA and MMA close to the surface of the nanoparticle have been evaluated and calculated. As main results we found a stronger structuration of PMMA close to the nanoparticle respect to the MMA bulk. Pluronics based formulations are among the most successful nanomedicines and block-‐copolymer micelles including drugs are undergoing phase I/II studies as anticancer agents. Using coarse-‐grained models, molecular dynamics simulations of large-‐scale systems, modeling Pluronic micelles interacting with DPPC lipid bilayers, on the μs timescale have been performed. Simulations show, in agreement with experiments, a release of Pluronic chains from the micelle to the bilayer. This release changes the size of the micelle, moreover the presence of drug molecules inside the core of the micelle has a strong influence on this process. The picture emerging from the simulations is that the micelle stability is a result of an interplay between drug/micelle core and block-‐copolymer/bilayer interactions. The equilibrium size of the drug vector shows a strong dependency on the hydrophobicity of the drug molecules embedded into the core of the micelle. In particular, the radius of the micelle shows an abrupt increase in a very narrow range of drug molecule hydrophobicity. [edited by author]

Abstract: This is a contribution to the problem of correction of dispersion that occurs in the stress-strain curve obtained in tests with the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB), or high strain rate compression testo Harmonic functions are used as solutions ofthe free bar. In this case, the free bar is considered as a limited section ofthe infinite bar, canning compression and tensile pulses moving in the opposite directions. The OCCUlTence of these pulses is such that the tensile stress and radial displacements are null in the extremities ofthe bar. This way, the work done by shear stresses in these sections is null, satisfying alI the ftee bar boundary conditions. With this solution it is possible to identify the strain pulses at bars-specimen interfuces in the SHPB test this analytical solution is confined by the finite element method. The procedure to obtain the stress-strain curve involves two stages. In the first stage, the displacement due to the reflected pulse is obtained. The time is shifted by a constant. This constant is adjusted, to the appropriate condition that the initial displacement corresponds to a null displacement. This condition represents the instant that the incident pulse reaches the bar-specimen interfuce. In the second stage, the specimen stress is obtained. The time is also shifted by a constant. The appropriate condition is reached when the elastic area of the stress-strain curve converges to the stress-strain curve ofthe quasi-static test With the free bar solution and the procedure to obtain the stress-strain-curve described above, the stress-strain curve of a copper specimen is obtained. The stress-strain curve presents a plastic area virtually free of dispersion

Abstract: This paper presents a study about NCrAlSi films coating, applied by process of Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) in test samples made of tool steel. With these samples it´s intend to evaluate the wear resistance and adhesion of coatings for using in cold forming tools, more specifically in the stamping process of carcases for hermetic compressors of SAE1006 steel sheets up to 3.5 mm thick. The samples were austenitized at 1030°C, quenched at 530 ° C and subjected to cryogenic treatment, thereby obtaining hardness between 60 and 62 HRC. To evaluate the tribological behavior, specimens were prepared with different characteristics for the coating, the coating deposition form, chemical composition and thickness of the coatings. Three types of surface finishes were produced: Polished; Microblasted; Microblasted and Polished. Regarding the form of deposition, the coatings were deposited in multilayer and gradient chemical composition. At the beginning of the layers remained the same chemical composition for all coatings being 75% Cr and 25% AlSi. During deposition the percentages of Cr decreased from the start to the end of the layer while the percentages of AlSi increased by forming some batches with 50% Cr and 50% AlSi and other lots with 30% Cr and 70% of the surface of the AlSi coatings. The nominal thickness of the coatings was planned with lots of 2µm and 3µm thick. Thus were applied five different lots of coat, with three specimens in each lot, one for each surface finish, amounting fifteen samples. The comparison of the tribological behavior between samples occurred, subjecting them to tests: Topographic Analysis of the substrate surface and coating, chemical and microstructural analysis by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with EDS , Analysis of present phases in coatings by X-ray diffraction, hardness of the coatings by Nanoindentation and microindentation; residual stresses in coatings by X-ray diffraction; Adhesion Testing of coatings to the substrate; Analysis of the tribological behavior of the coatings. Through the results gotten from the experiments, could be concluded that the coatings deposited with chemical composition gradient, with 30% of Cr and 70% of AlSi on the end of layer, with a thickness of 3µm and microblasted surface, showed better results in all the tests they undergone. It was note that changes in the levels of Cr and AlSi showed no significant correlation in the wear resistance and adhesion of coatings. After analyzing all the results could be conclued that the major difference between the experimental conditions employed was microblasting after polishing, which provide the best adhesion classification of coatings.

Texte intégralThe PhD project, carried out in collaboration with ENEA, the research agency I work for, has as objective the characterization, of new mesoporous and nanaostructured adsorbent material by static and dynamic methods used in selective adsorption of different classes of molecules in the field of environmental, pharmaceutical, energy and bioanalytical sector. The characterization involved: amorphous mesoporous functionalized silicas (perfluoroalkyl chains and chiral) and crystalline microporous aluminosilicate (zeolite). By high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) YES excess isotherms from binary liquid mixtures were determinated (by means of the front analysis, perturbation on the plateau and pulse tracer) obtaining foundamental data on interphase composition; preferential adsorption and characterization of adsorption sites. The adsorption isotherms have been determined also in batch systems to investigate adsorption and desadsorpion mechanism for different classes of molecules. They were then exploited complementary methods such as differential thermogravimetry and structural analaysis like the Solid State MAS-NMR and X-rays Diffraction technique. The combination of these techniques has allowed to optain a detailed description both on microscopic that the macroscopic properties of adsorption allowing an accurate representation of the processes. Results achieved efinitely have a value both theoretical and practical The study of silicas perfluorinated compounds allowed to increase the knowledge about the retention mechanisms on hydrophobic perfluorinated phases by fluorinated molecules highlighting the importance of the interaction FF (fluorophilicity) on retention and molecular recognition, for feature environmental applications (separation of emerging contaminated). We have been Studied the separation processes on chiral phases in brush type systems, highly efficient for ultrafast separations. The chromatographic columns used were prototype, packed with particles sub-2 um, that reach high efficiencies allowing the separation of enantiomeric pairs in a very short time. Thid information are foundamental for the pharmaceutical industry where the screening of libraries of chiral compounds requires advanced methods. The characterization of zeolites (13X, L, L-dwarf, 3A, clinoptilolite, chabazite) has been foundamental to the study of the adsorption characteristics of rare earth cations (Yttrium and Neodymium). This study has evident economic repercussions due to the importance of rare earths in technological industry applications and also for the increasing difficulties in the supply of these materials. The zeolite with shows the best exchange capacity was the 13X. For this zeolite, the experimental data of adsorption process are well described by a Langmuir isotherm type , whom we can assume that each site may adsorb only a cation and adsorption sites on the surface of the zeolite are energetically equivalent (homogeneous surface adsorption). Results obtained with XRPD confirmed localization of both cations in position II between the sodalite cage and the supercage showing structural modification mainly in exchanged zeolite with Neodymium (Nd-13X) in which a partial loss of crystallinity was observed. This data was confirmed from the MAS NMR spectra of Si and Al. the Na-13X and 13X-Y seems to maintain the same structures, in the Nd-13X, however, spectrum result very spread and widened and without structures, probably due to a strong structural disorder (in agreement with the information obtained by means of XRPD analysis). The Study was completed with a series of kinetic adsorption/desorption measurements which revealed that the zeolite Na-13X keeps unchanged the capacity of ion exchange after several cycles of adsorption and regeneration treatment.

Abstract: The main objective of this work is to study the frequency behavior of the guided modes in microstrip lines and bilateral finlines on magnetized ferrite substrates. The analysis is performed, in the spectral domain, by using the Hertz vector potentials in conjunction with Galerkin's approach. The electromagnetic waves are expanded in terms of Hertz vector potentials, oriented along ferrite magnetization, to determine the elements of the dyadic Green's function of the considered structure. Numerical results are presented and their features discussed. Curves are obtained as a function of various structural parameters and of the biasing magnetic field applied along the three directions of the cartesian coordinate system. The results are in agreement with those found by other authors. The analysis of the planar transmission structures on ferrites is useful for the development of nonreciprocal devices at microwave and millimeter wave frequencies

Abstract : Aiming applications as porous radiant burners, mullite ceramic sponges with open porosity were fabricated by the replica method of polymeric sponges. Mullite is a material consisting of alumina and silica, which due to its structure presents high thermal shock resistance and high temperature stability, important requirements for the application as porous radiant burners. In the conducted study, the rheology of suspension of mullite precursors (containing alumina powder and colloidal silica) laid up 2.00 wt.% of bentonite and 0.75 and 1.00 wt.% CMC as additives for the suspensions used in the impregnation of polymeric sponges. Sponges with double impregnation were also made in order to improve the mechanical properties of coatings with thicker filaments. The formation of mullite from this mixture (3Al2O3.2SiO2) was characterized using quantification of phases by the Rietveld method. After treatment at 1600 °C for 4 h, 90.3% of the crystalline phases were identified as mullite formed by reaction sintering between its precursors. The sponges were tested by dynamic tests to evaluate the elastic modulus using resonance bar to characterize the loss of elastic modulus by thermal shock. In the best condition, sponges with simple impregnation, the elastic modulus decreased with the increase of cycles of thermal shock in the order of 22% compared with those double impregnated, which showed 61%, after 12 thermal shocks. Moreover, the tensile strength in compression of the samples with double impregnation was 14 times higher than those with simple impregnation. Thus, it was observed that increasing mechanical strength is not related to the increased resistance to thermal shock. Operation tests were conducted under different conditions to evaluate the loss of strength in operation. Operation time (between 10 min and 6 h) and temperature (between 1250 and 1500 °C) were varied. The burners survived the thermal cycles and temperatures imposed, thereby showing that this material is capable to be used in real conditions.

Abstract: This thesis presents investigations and results at the interface between materials science, computer science and biology where nanoparticle-cell interactions were studied using molecular dynamics simulations, aiming at understanding physical-chemical aspects of the interface existing between nanomaterials and cells. From these studies was evident that new methods to study such interactions as well as biomaterial-cell interactions would be required. Thus, an approach based on systems biology (CellNet) was used to elucidate global changes in gene expression programs in cells interacting with nanoparticles or cultured in organoid cell cultures. Firstly, these methods were developed and validated for stem cells, especifically to the engineering of cell identity such as reprogramming of somatic cells to pluripotency, directed differentiation of stem cells to specific lineages (such cardiomyocytes) and direct conversion between somatic cells (fibroblastos to cardiomyocytes). CellNet application to nanoparticle-cell interactions showed that significant transcriptional changes may occur as quantified by the establishment of Gene Regulatory Networks (GRNs) in immune system cells incubated with gold nanoparticles functionalized with oligonucleotides. In addition, inflammatory responses might be associated as suggested by the upregulation of genes regulating interferon-mediated signaling pathways. Analysis of human keratinocytes in organoid cell culture indicated the full establishment of the skin GRN and that there are major differences between cells cultured in bidimensional and tridimensional platforms at the transcriptome level. Nanoparticles activated by extracellular matrix remodelling processes were developed and characterized, where it was demonstrated that activation by specific proteases such as MMP9 and MMP2 is possible as well as an unclear effect on the inhibitionof Cathepsin B by nanoparticles, suggesting a therapeutic strategy for cancers showing upregulation of MMP9, MMP2 and cathepsin B. The results presented contribute to a better understanding of nanoparticle/biomaterialcell interactions, the design of therapeutic nanomaterials as well as a better understanding regarding the three major cell engineering paradigms widely used.

The studied prototypes are able to adapt to external stimuli, thanks to organic photochromatic elements that, under the solar radiation, gradually darken by increasing the reflected energy and ensuring the containment of internal temperatures. When the solar radiation drops, they return transparent, letting the sunlight filter through. The ratio of the glasses is the shielding of the thermal energy thanks to the assembly of Low-E glasses, reflecting the infrared radiation, with photochromatic elements able to reflect, activating, the ultraviolet band and a large part of the visible radiation. In experimental campaigns, it was possible to appreciate the performance of experimental glasses, comparing them with those of a low-emission sample module (one of the most performing and widespread products on the market). The advantages of the experimental glasses were quantified, according to the technical procedures of the Standards UNI EN 410/2000 and UNI EN 673/2011, through the evaluation of the characteristic parameters of the windows, first of all the solar factor G which is the total thermal energy transmitted by glass and the light transmission factor v representing introjected natural light. The tests have confirmed the validity of the experimental modules that, at the most obscuring, have managed to screen 25% more thermal energy, compared to the reference sample and guarantee 8 ÷ 10 degrees K less temperature inside the boxes; while, in the transparent state, they guaranteed the introspection of natural light.

Abstract: The water and suspended particulate matter (SPM) dynamics and its main forcing functions (tides and freshwater discharge) were analysed in the bays of Antonina and Paranagua. A data set comprised measurements over 8 semi-diurnal tidal cycles made in one cross section and of 2 0 longitudinal profiles along the bays of Antonina and Paranagua, monitored in the different tidal stages (ebb, flood and slack). These meaairements included spring and neap cycles, in conditions of low (winter) and high (summer) freshwater discharges. The freshwater discharge and SPM load from the drainage basin were quantified at the same time. Means of river discharge and SPM load from the estuarine watershed were about 4 times bigger during summer than winter, in function of higher hydric excess (about 3,5 times) and larger rainfall erodibility (about 8 times) in the first period. The major part of SPM load (50-80%) was introduced into the system in short periods of time (5-11%). The seasonal variation of freshwater discharge controlled strongly: the mean salinity, the position of maximum salt intrusion, and the range of vertical salinity stratification along the bays of Antonina and Paranagua. However, the mean horizontal gradient of salinity was close in the both periods (summer and winter), showing an intensification into the Bay of Antonina that undergoes a higher influence of the continental discharge. Currents, salinity and concentrations of SPM showed a pronounced spring-neap variability. The intensity of vertical mixing or stratification was firstly determined by tidal currents and, secondarily by freshwater input. The Bay of Paranagua, for one cross section in front of the city of Paranagua, was classified as a partly mixed estuary, of type 2 of the Hansen & Rattray's (1966) classification. The increasing of vertical stratification together with the reduction of mean current velocity intensified the gravitational circulation, decreasing the salt fraction transported by diffusion. During extreme conditions of high stratification, observed especially in neap cycles, the upstream salt transport was almost exclusively by advection. In the cycles with low freshwater input and strong currents, preponderated the diffusive processes; the residual circulation was oriented basically landward or seaward. The joined effect of the asymmetries on the mean velocity and on the duration between ebb and flood explained the magnitude and direction of residual current and resultant water transport of the system. The SPM dynamics was intrinsically related to cyclical processes of erosion, resuspension and sedimentation, driven by tidal currents. The intensity and vertical structure of currents (velocity gradient) showed influence on the quantity of eroded matter. The amount of turbulence affected the vertical SPM dispersion. The resuspension was more conspicuous in spring tides, with strong currents, while in neap tides, advection preponderated. Lags between the maximum currents and SPM concentrations were observed, with more pronounced hysteresis during spring ebb-periods. Turbidity maximum zone situated between the kilometres 30 and 40 upstream the mouth of Bay of Paranagua, during floods and slack of high water, and between kilometres 16 and 36, during ebbs and slack of low water, mainly in regions of channel narrowing, where currents are intensified. One second region of high SPM concentrations was found in salt and fresh water interface, that may be related to vertical gravitational circulation. Although the turbidity has been higher in this region, the SPM concentrations were not bigger than other places of the bay that were subjected to strong resuspension.

Abstract : Simple particle configurations of immobilized imidazole systems have been formed through a Reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) approach using as input the radial distribution functions (RDF) from classical Molecular Dynamics simulations (MD). The RMC box contains a simplified system of particles created considering the RDF of all atoms system from the MD simulations, each particle represents one imidazole group covalent bonded to a Carbon atoms chain. The RMC particles configuration created carry the spatial information from the all atoms MD of the immobilized imidazole system. For the adequate RMC modeling the proper constraints are chosen. We present the RDFs and configuration boxes formed via the RMC approach in good agreement with the input structural data from the MD simulations.

Abstract: This dissertation presents a methodology to synthesize influence or Green's functions for linear viscoelastic horizontally stratified soil profiles. These functions are applied to describe the linear dynamic soil-structure interaction phenomena. Influence functions for sources at the soil surface or buried at the domain are considered. Throughout this work a state of plane strain and stationary behaviour is assumed. The synthesized functions are used together with two substructure methodologies to model the dynamic behaviour of partially embedded and buried structures. The first methodology, called the Substructure Deletion Method, applies surface influence functions and allows the description of partial embedment. The second methodology based on functions with buried sources allow the analysis of totally embedded or buried structures. The present methodologies are compared with an implementation on the direct version of the Boundary Element Method. Comparisons include discretization effort, memory requirements and processing time

Abstract: The present energy efficiency demand establishes the need of vibration control in rotating machinery. Vibration control techniques for such machines are available, however, a low cost alternative is the use of viscoelastic supports (VES) due to its high ability to dissipate vibrational energy. Nonetheless the modest use of VES may be explained by the widely use of classical approaches for the mathematical modeling of such devices. Its noticed the frequent use of classical viscoelastic models - like Maxwell, Kelvin-Voigt, Zenner, GHM models and even frequency/temperature independent models - but they lack the accuracy of fractional models in a large range of frequency and temperature regarding the same number of material parameters. Even in those works, the need to add degrees of freedom to motion equations due to VES is evident, in fact, this causes a slow computation performance regarding the optimization of SVEs, which is also neglected in most studies. In addition, the angular DOFs modelling in VES as well as the inclusion of additional masses/inertias in order to improve the vibration control are not observed in those works. Thus arises the demand for the development of a fast and accurate general methodology to optimize VES with n DOF properly parameterized (translational and angular), in order to minimize the vibration response of rotating systems with multiple DOF. This thesis presents a robust methodology based mainly on generalized equivalent parameters (GEP) - for an optimal design of viscoelastic supports for rotating machinery - aiming at minimizing the unbalance frequency response of the system using a hybrid optimization technique (genetic algorithms and Nelder- Mead method). For this purpose the rotor is modeled based on the finite element method using Timoshenko's thick beam formulation, and the viscoelastic material is modeled based on the four-parameter fractional derivatives. The DOF of VES are properly parameterized in both models of VES, adding DOF and GEP. Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the influence of translational and angular DOF of VES - considered individually and combined - on systems vibration control and transmissibility. A prototype of VES is built with optimal parameters and subjected to experimental tests, which demonstrated that the proposed methodology is fully capable to provide accurate prediction of the dynamics behavior of rotor-VES systems as well as to control the vibrational response in terms of amplitude and transmissibility.
Abstract : The purpose of this study is the phenomenological modeling of a chimney spewing particulate matter with a diameter of 10 µm (PM10), 15 µm and 20 µm using data acquired over an operation year in a sugar plant. With this model, we intend to study the behavior of particulate matter in the air flow through the environment, determining the degree of dispersion and the distances traveled by the same in order to verify if there is risk of respiratory diseases for the population near industry. The model developed has undergone validation testing. The work of Hall et al. (1998), which deals with dispersion of particles in the wind tunnel was used for this purpose. The model tested showed adequate results for the dispersion glass particulates of 105µm according to the data provid-ed in the above mentioned study. In the model of particle emission, three simulations were conducted to further evaluate the effects and differences between a not isothermal turbulent flow model and a non- isothermal mixed model (laminar outside the chimney and turbulent inside). The model emission of particulate matter produced a physical behavior consistent with literature data for PM10 particulates class. The stack height (25 m) which can shed particles up to about 80 m from ground level allows them to move efficiently dispersing over long dis-tances, thus greatly reducing any risk to human health. Particulate mat-ter comes to the ground in about 3 h 30 min and can stay in the air indef-initely depending on their size (<10 micrometers) and wind conditions.

Currently there is an intensive search for new materials with tuned properties for use in organic solar cells to obtain an increase in its conversion efficiency and replace silicon devices. The polythieno[3,4-b]-thiophene-co-benzodithiophene (PTB7) is a polymer recently proposed in the literature and with very interesting properties in organic solar cells, which places it as a possible alternative to the widely used poli(3-hexilthiophene) (P3HT). It has been reported changes in different positions of the monomeric unit of this copolymer, both in benzodithiophene (BDT) structure, as in the thienothiophene (TT) structure that compose it. These modifications led to new polymers with different properties and sometimes more interesting than those of PTB7 without substitutions. The work to be presented aimed to study the structural, electronic and optical properties of PTB7 and possible changes due to chemical changes made in the BDT structure of its monomeric units. This study employed optimization tools like Molecular Mechanics, Molecular Dynamics and Parametric Method 6 (PM6), as well as calculations of the electronic structures with the Density Functional Theory (DFT) method, and optical properties such as the Time Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) calculations. We conclude that the PTB7 chains in the solid state can be considered planar. With our model for PTB7, we obtained a difference ΔEHL between the Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital (HOMO) and the Lowest Unoccupied Molecular Orbital (LUMO) of approximately 1.84 eV, and this value is in good agreement with the experimental value. Regarding chemical substitutions, we studied theoretically 8 derivatives of PTB7 and the results showed that it is possible to obtain compounds with a significant decrease in ΔEHL and that it is possible to obtain compounds with HOMO and LUMO energy values more adjusted to the widely employed acceptor material phenylC61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM).

Texte intégralPhase change materials based on chalcogenide alloys are of great technological importance because of their use in optical data storage devices (DVDs) and electronic non-volatile memories of new concept, the Phase Change Memory cell (PCM). These applications rely on a fast (50 ns) and reversible change between the crystalline and the amorphous phases upon heating. The two phases correspond to the two states of the memory that can be discriminated thanks to a large difference in their optical and electronic properties. Although Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) is the compound presently used as active layer in PCMs, alternative materials with a higher crystallization temperature are under scrutiny in order to increase the thermal stability of the PCM devices. In this respect, we analysed, by means of ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations, different high crystallization temperature alloys with composition In3Sb1Te2, In13Sb11Te3 and Ga4Sb6Te3, which have been experimentally proposed as substitute of GST. However, the structural properties and the microscopical reason of the high thermal stability of the amorphous phases of these compounds is still unclear. We, thus, generated models of the amorphous phase of few hundreds of atoms by quenching from the melt in few hundreds of ps aiming at finding out a relation between the structural properties of the amorphous phase and the high crystallization temperature of these alloys. The topology of our amorphous models turned out to be mostly tetrahedral which differs from the octahedral-like geometry of the crystalline phases. The presence of tetrahedral structures in the amorphous which are absent in the crystalline phase, probably hinders the crystallization process resulting in a higher crystallization temperature with respect to GST which display a mostly octahedral-like structures in both amorphous and the crystalline phase. In the second part of this work we addressed the issue of the resistance drift phenomenon, which consists of an increase of the electrical resistance of the amorphous phase with time. This effect is detrimental in PCMs since it changes the electrical characteristics of the devices. This process is believed to be due to an aging of the amorphous phase which modifies during time the defect states in the proximity of the valence and conduction band edges which control the electrical conductivity. The microscopic origin of the structural relaxations leading to the drift is still unknown. To address this problem, we generated large models (about two thousand atoms) of amorphous GeTe by quenching from the melt in 100 ps with classical molecular dynamics simulations by using a neural-network potential. Once relaxed by first principles, the models showed the presence of several in-gap states localized on chains of Ge atoms. After an annealing at 500 K, performed to accelerate the drift process, Ge chains and homopolar Ge-Ge bonds reduce in number resulting in a band gap widening and a reduction of the Urbach tails at the band edges which can account for the increase of the resistance. We thus propose that the resistance drift originates from structural relaxations leading to the removal of Ge chains.

Abstract: The purpose of this work is to create a model to computationally describe the coexistence of two competing species with migration features in the presence of a toxic impactant material. The equations must include the phenomena of populational dispersion, migratory processes, density-dependent populational dynamics and toxic effects of the evolutive presence of an impactant material developing in the environment, generating a proportional decrease in both populations. Resorting to well-established, although relatively recent, mathematical instruments a Lotka - Volterra type (and consequently nonlinear) system, including characteristics of a Migration-Dispersion PDE. The first step is the discrete variational formulation of this system aiming for the use of the Finite Element Method toghether with a Crank-Nicolson Method. Second, the formulation of an algorithm (together with a programme in MATLAB environment) that approximates the relative discrete solutions to each population in each point and along of the time interval considered in the simulations. Lastly, useful graphics will be obtained of the quantitative and qualitative viewpoints for use with specialists of the fields of ecology and environment and in the evaluation and calibration of models and programmes

Advances in materials technology and development of new sophisticated construction techniques allowed the construction of lighter structures and with high bearing capacity. This process started during the industrial revolution and extends to present days and imposed the necessity to check, along the design phase, the dynamic behavior of structures, with few exceptions. Despite that, some structures have large amplitudes of displacements under unexpected actions. This unwanted situation speeds up the fatigue of materials and in certain situations prevent the use of the structure and/or equipment. An efficient way to attenuate these vibrations is through passive vibration control systems with viscoelastic materials. In this sense, this work will address the GHM method used in numerical modeling of viscoelastic materials in time domain with Finite Element Method. In order to validate this method, some types of finite elements formulated using this method are presented and their responses in frequency domain obtained for a given structure are compared with those obtained by classical formulation. Are also outlined a few examples using this method. Sandwich beams and a riser model are modeled numerically and the natural frequencies and damping ratios identified with the numerical responses are compared with those identified through experimental tests.

Abstract: Several flows of practical interest are of viscoelastic fluids and it is often desirable to know if these flows are in a laminar or turbulent state. Although the hydrodynamics of viscoelastic fluids are strongly affected by the balance between inertia and elastic forces in the flow, the effect of elasticity on the stability of inertial flows has not been completely established. In this work is studied what happens between these two states, the laminar-turbulent transition. Specifically, it will be investigated the convection of Tollmien-Schlichting waves to incompressible Poiseuille flow of viscoelastic fluid, using the constitutive equation Oldroyd-B. For this, the analysis is carried out by means of Direct Numerical Simulation to verify the stability of the non-stationary disturbances viscoelastic fluids flows. The numerical results obtained for viscoelastic fluids flows are compared with the results of Newtonian fluids flows, which are already well documented in scientific community. In addition, an Orr-Sommerfeld modified equation is deducted for a viscoelastic flow using Linear Stability Theory
