Gustafson, Karl. Operator Geometry in Statistics. Sous la direction de Frédéric Ferraty et Yves Romain. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199568444.013.13.

Résumé :
This article discusses the essentials of operator trigonometry developed by the author as it applies to statistics, with emphasis on key elements such as operator antieigenvalues, operator antieigenvectors, and operator turning angles. Operator trigonometry started out infinite dimensional, and remains infinite dimensional, even for Banach spaces. Thus, it is in principle applicable not only to infinite-dimensional statistics but also to cases involving functional data. The article first considers how operator trigonometry gives new geometrical meaning to statistical efficiency before formalizing it in a more deductive manner. It then explains the essentials of operator trigonometry and summarizes the ensuing developments. It also describes two lemmas that are implicit and essential to operator trigonometry, Antieigenvector Reconstruction Lemma and General Two-Component Lemma, and how operator trigonometry provides new geometry to statistics matrix inequalities and canonical correlations. Finally, it presents new results applying operator trigonometry to prediction theory and to association measures.

Résumé :
Postmedieval maritime archaeology is focused more on naval ships than classical or medieval maritime archaeology. Merchant ship archaeology lived for many years in the shadow of naval ships. Ships and seafaring were an essential part of that growth and expansion, connecting remote parts of the world in a global economy. The period after 1400 is characterized by growth and bureaucratization in most of Europe. There were major developments in ship construction after 1400. In the Mediterranean, frame-based design and construction methods reached a stage of sophisticated geometrical precision. Mediterranean techniques began to be adopted along the Atlantic coast. The demographic and economic recovery of the fifteenth century and the globalization of seafaring lead to the use of a wider range of ship sizes. Privateering was a profitable enterprise in wartime. The growth of maritime archaeology was tied directly to popular cultural interest in perceived high points in national histories.

Résumé :
This chapter presents the main features of the Minkowski spacetime, which is the geometrical framework in which the laws of relativistic dynamics are formulated. It is a very simple mathematical extension of three-dimensional Euclidean space. In special relativity, ‘relative, apparent, and common’ (in the words of Newton) space and time are represented by a mathematical set of points called events, which constitute the Minkowski spacetime. This chapter also stresses the interpretation of the fourth dimension, which in special relativity is time. Here, time now loses the ‘universal’ and ‘absolute’ nature that it had in the Newtonian theory.

Résumé :
While the visualization of data is critical for many scientific applications, the development of programs to render geometrical forms in real time, providing interactive control over viewpoint and angle, animation, and/or user interaction, can be complicated for a scientist. The need to master unfamiliar technology such as graphics engines, windowing software, and graphical user interfaces constitute major challenges. An introduction to the graphical display of data using the Coin3d toolkit for object modeling and rendering is given. The Qt library for graphical user interfacing and the SoQt package, which serves as “glue” between Qt and Coin3d are also presented. Applications to visualizing fractal geometries, three-dimensional objects, and random data are presented.

Résumé :
Multimodality imaging is vital in any percutaneous cardiac procedure, increasing the precision and accuracy of the procedure to optimize results and reduce complications to a minimum. Three-dimensional transoesophageal echocardiography has progressively become essential, as it provides supportive and precise image information, additive to that obtained by conventional two-dimensional imaging. The rapidly evolving technology to improve visualization and image resolution is aiding the development and performance of these techniques with an increasing need of qualified imaging expertise. This chapter describes the use of transthoracic, transoesophageal, and intracardiac echocardiography approaches in a variety of interventional echocardiography procedures, including valvular heart disease, transcatheter aortic valve implantation, MitraClip® therapy for mitral valve repair, percutaneous closure of paravalvular leaks, and intracardiac shunts.

Résumé :
Celestial Tapestry places mathematics within a vibrant cultural and historical context, highlighting links to the visual arts and design, and broader areas of artistic creativity. Threads are woven together telling of surprising influences that have passed between the arts and mathematics. The story involves many intriguing characters: Gaston Julia, who laid the foundations for fractals and computer art while recovering in hospital after suffering serious injury in the First World War; Charles Howard, Hinton who was imprisoned for bigamy but whose books had a huge influence on twentieth-century art; Michael Scott, the Scottish necromancer who was the dedicatee of Fibonacci’s Book of Calculation, the most important medieval book of mathematics; Richard of Wallingford, the pioneer clockmaker who suffered from leprosy and who never recovered from a lightning strike on his bedchamber; Alicia Stott Boole, the Victorian housewife who amazed mathematicians with her intuition for higher-dimensional space. The book includes more than 200 colour illustrations, puzzles to engage the reader, and many remarkable tales: the secret message in Hans Holbein’s The Ambassadors; the link between Viking runes, a Milanese banking dynasty, and modern sculpture; the connection between astrology, religion, and the Apocalypse; binary numbers and the I Ching. It also explains topics on the school mathematics curriculum: algorithms; arithmetic progressions; combinations and permutations; number sequences; the axiomatic method; geometrical proof; tessellations and polyhedra, as well as many essential topics for arts and humanities students: single-point perspective; fractals; computer art; the golden section; the higher-dimensional inspiration behind modern art.

Benjamin, Mike, Dennis McGonagle, Maribel I. Miguel, David A. Bong et Ingrid Möller. Limb anatomy and medical imaging. Oxford University Press, 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199642489.003.0065.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter provides a generalized framework for helping the clinician to understand basic principles of functional anatomy in the limbs in relation to medical imaging, particularly ultrasonography (US). Certain basic design principles that are evident in the limbs are explained: for example, that larger muscles lie proximally, and that tendons are more numerous and longer distally. While the upper limb is ultimately geared to moving the hand with ease and precision in three-dimensional space, the lower limb is both an organ of propulsion and a column supporting body weight. It is important to note that when the foot is on the ground this has an important influence on muscle function. Fundamental principles of muscle design and action are explained, including the distinction between prime movers, antagonists, synergists, and fixators; the fact that movements and not muscles are represented in the cerebral cortex; the all-or-nothing principle of fibre contraction; the modifying influence of gravity on muscle action; and issues relating to fibre architecture. The less appreciated functions of tendons are included and the difference between an enthesis and an enthesis organ is explained. The similar appearance of nerves and tendons in dissections and even in MRI and US images is explained and the importance of fascia is highlighted—particularly its role as an 'ectoskeleton'. Brief mention is made of adipose tissue and blood vessels, and planes of movement between adjacent structures are described in order to inform the ultrasonographer who deals with structures in real time.
