Résumé :
In the present paper the detailed design and performances of two municipal wastewater treatment plants, a four-stage constructed wetlands (CW) system located in the city of Dicomano (about 3,500 inhabitants) in Italy, and a three-stage CW system for the village of Chorfech (about 500 inhabitants) in Tunisia, are presented. The obtained results demonstrate that multi-stage CWs provide an excellent secondary treatment for wastewaters with variable operative conditions, reaching also an appropriate effluent quality for reuse. Dicomano CWs have shown good performances, on average 86% of removal for the Organic Load, 60% for Total Nitrogen (TN), 43% for Total Phosphorus (TP), 89% for Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and 76% for Ammonium (NH4+). Even the disinfection process has performed in a very satisfactory way, reaching up to 4–5 logs of reduction of the inlet pathogens concentration, with an Escherichia coli average concentration in the outlet often below 200 UFC/100 mL. The mean overall removal rates of the Chorfech CWs during the monitored period have been, respectively, equal to 97% for TSS and Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5), 95% for Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), 71% for TN and 82% for TP. The observed removal of E. coli by the CW system was in this case 2.5 log units.

Résumé :
This report focuses on potential ways to improve the reliability of the production process at the wood refining company Dicomad S.R.L. in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia. The main theory used has been Lean Production, as this theory suits the circumstances of the company well. Disorder has been the biggest problem, which has caused the safety in the factory to be below an acceptable level. Dicomad has two different businesses – producing decking and furniture. The decking production is fairly standardized whereas the furniture production is customized. The study was carried out during the summer and fall of 2009.The analysis has resulted in changes in the layout of the factory such that a clearer work flow as well as proper order can be maintained. More specifically, three new layout suggestions have been made. The first suggestion makes big changes in the layout creating the “optimal” layout for the current situation. The second makes slightly smaller changes and the third makes small, but important changes to the layout. Our choice of the three is the second suggestion which constitutes the best compromise given the current layout. This suggestion will bring substantial benefits in form of a clearer flow, more organized inventory and separation of the two businesses but does not include a strenuous movement of the molder. Furthermore, each operation in the factory has been scrutinized and suggested improvements have been made to banish disorganization. Suggestions include redesign of machines, addition of collecting mechanisms for material and creation of best practices for machines. The greatest improvements have been possible within the furniture manufacturing as the factory was originally designed for decking production only. Additionally, proposals about improving the light, the air quality and the general organization and cleanliness of the factory have been made.Only suggestions are presented, as the time available for the study was limited and any implementations were beyond our scope.

Two plants, Dicoma anomala [Sond.]; a member of the Asteraceae and Sclerocarya birrea [(A. Rich) Hoechst. subspecies caffra (Sond.) Kokwaro], a member of the Anarcadiaceae families, are used widely in Africa for a variety of traditional treatments. In this thesis it has been shown that these plants possess in vitro pharmacological activities against the malaria parasite. The extracts of D. anomala are active in vitro against Plasmodium falciparum and those of S. birrea selectively enhance the in vitro accumulation of chloroquine in resistant strains of Plasmodium falciparum.

Through South Africa’s first collaborative project between a large scientific organisation, the Council for Scientific and Indust rial Research (CSIR), and the Traditional Healer’s Committee, Dicoma anomala was identified as a plant containing potent anticancer and antimalarial compo unds. In the process of evaluation, extracted plant material with reported or anecdotal use for the treatment of respiratory problems was found to have significant anticancer activity in vitro in a 3-cell line preliminary screen . The extract was further shown to have potent anticancer activity against the 60-cell line panel at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) in the USA. Bioassay-guided fractio nation, initially utilising an in vitro anticancer assay, and structural elucidation resul ted in two potent compounds with sesquiterpenoid skeletons (C-15 and C-30). The crystal structure of the C-15 compound, not published previously, was obtained. B oth compounds were further screened in an antiplasmodial assay during the cour se of the National Drug Development Platform (RSA: CSIR, MRC and UCT) proje ct, and were found to have potent activity against Plasmodium falciparum (a malaria protozoon). Although the C-15 compound had a selectivity index (SI) of 10, suggesting that it was suitable for subsequent development, the dimer was highly toxic (SI index of 1), limiting opportunities for future development. A further study of the structure- activity relationship (SAR), which was initiated fo r the C-15 compound, showed that removal of each unsaturated structural compone nt decreased activity 10–fold in both bioassays. Additional investigations were c arried out into amino-acid Michael adducts with the exocyclic double bond of t he C-15 sesquiterpenoids, and the products were characterised by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. A similar investigation, involving the conjugate addi tion of simple amines, was undertaken in an attempt to enhance the bioavailabi lity of the parent sesquiterpenoid. Three diethylamine derivatives wer e prepared and characterised. A general 10-fold drop in the bioactivity of these “pro-drug” derivatives in both assays was observed. Finally, the C-15 compound was tested in vivo in the Plasmodium berghei murine malaria model and was found to have some eff ect on the survival rates of the laboratory animals when c ompared with the control. A possible mode of action is suggested based on the e xperimental and published bioactivity data. Further studies to improve the bi oactivity and alternative design of future in vivo studies are also proposed.

Netnou, Noluthando C. « A revision of the genera Dicoma cass. and Macledium cass.(Asteraceae, mutislae) ». Thesis, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10210/243.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
A synopsis of the southern African members of the genera Dicoma Cass. and Macledium Cass. (family Asteraceae, subfamily Cichorioidiae, tribe Mutiseae, subtribe Gochnatiinae) is presented. The most recent monograph of Dicoma was done by Wilson (1923). It included 34 species, of which 17 are southern African, The southern African species were last treated by Harvey (1865). Traditionally Dicoma included 50 to 65 species, of which 23 occur in southern Africa. Ortiz (2001) reinstated the genus Macledium Cass., which was first described by Cassini (1825), following a phylogenetic study of Dicoma and related genera (Ortiz, 2000). The species previously belonging to sections Macledium and Pterocoma of the genus Dicoma have been transferred to the genus Macledium by Ortiz (2001). In this study, characters relating to morphology of the involucral bracts, disc floret cuticle ornamentation, type of pappus and the type of achenes are used to distinguish the two genera. Differences were found between the grassland species and Cape species of Macledium. Type of florets in the capitulum and pappus morphology are used to distinguish sections within Dicoma sensu stricto. Characters such as habit, leaf morphology, shape and size of the capitulum, involucral bracts vestiture and details of the pappus could be reliably used to distinguish species. The genus Dicoma now consists of about 35 species, of which16 species and two subspecies occur in southern Africa. Four informal groups of D. anomala subsp. anomala, two of D. anomala subsp. gerrardii as well as two of D. montana are recognized to accommodate infraspecific variation. Macledium comprises about 20 species, of which seven species, three subspecies and three varieties occurr in this region. M. spinosum is divided into two informal forms and a new combination, Macledium zeyheri subsp. zeyheri var. thyrsiflorum, is made. In view of the above, a comprehensive taxonomic revision of all the southern African taxa was done. Morphological and anatomical data were used to investigate relationships among the species of Dicoma sensu stricto, using the genus Macledium as the sister group. A phylogenetic analysis of Macledium was also done to investigate relationships between the grassland species and the Cape species. The taxonomic treatment includes the nomenclature, synonymy, diagnostic characters, uses, common names (where possible) and geographical distribution for all southern African taxa belonging to the two genera. Keys to the genera, sections, species and subspecies are provided and the diagnostic characters of the two genera are illustrated.
