Résumé :
The percent cover and composition of benthic macroalgal growths and the structure of epilithic diatom communities were analyzed in 1995 at four sites in a stream flowing through a cultivated field near Kintore, Ontario, Canada. The dominant epilithic diatom taxa did not differ greatly among sites. However, a correspondence analysis of the diatoms sampled monthly between July and September separated an upstream site from those receiving agricultural runoff. Sites downstream of agricultural inputs showed an increase in the cover of Cladophora glomerata (L.) Kütz and other green algae, and in general a reduction in the cover of diatoms and crusts dominated by Oscillatoriaceae (aff. Oscillatoria sp.) and the red alga Audouinella violacea (Kütz.) Hamel. In particular, there was a positive correlation between the cover of Cladophora and nitrate concentration.Key words: biomonitoring, diatoms, periphyton, agriculture, correspondence analysis (CA).

Résumé :
AbstractThe main objective of this study was to assess the ecological status of the Mlava River based on epilithic diatoms and to test the use of diatom indices as a tool for estimating the quality of flowing waters in Serbia. Quantitative analysis showed that in AprilAchnanthidium minutissimumwas dominant at each site, except at the fifth site, whereAmphora pediculuswas dominant. In July and September,Achnanthidium minutissimum, Achnanthidium pyrenaicum,Amphora pediculus,Denticula tenuis,Diatoma vulgaris,Gomphonema elegantissimum,Cocconeis pseudolineataandCocconeis placentulavar.lineatadominated. Detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) was used to detect the major patterns of variation in species composition. The first DCA axis summarizes the distribution of the diatom community, mainly through temperature, conductivity, oxygen and water hardness gradient. The second DCA axis was weakly correlated with few variables. Based on the average values of the pollution sensitivity index (IPS), commission for economical community metric (CEE) and biological diatom index (IBD), the water of the Mlava River belonged to water class I during all three seasons. Values of the diatom-based eutrophication/pollution index (EPI-D) indicated class II water quality. According to calculated trophic diatom index (TDI) values, water of the Mlava River was characterized by intermediate nutrient concentrations during three seasons. Principal components analysis was used to represent the correlation between diatom indices, and the highest correlation among the selected diatom indices is seen between EPI-D, IPS and IBD.

For the diagnosis of drowning in immersed bodies, the diatom test has been controversial due to false-negative and false-positive results. Causes of false positive results include antemortem penetration of diatoms, and postmortem contamination during the submersion or the diatom preparation process. Herein, we report a false-positive case in a 30-year-old woman who died from homicidal multiple stab wounds and was thrown into a shallow farm waterway approximately 10 days after her death. In addition, a discussion on the false-positive diatom test results in immersed bodies with penetrating wounds is provided.

Résumé :
Two species of large extension feeding barnacles are abundant on exposed tropical rocky shores of northern Australia. The cirri of many specimens carry varying numbers of a commensal diatom in some cases with as many as 2000 individuals on a single cirrus. The araphid diatom resembles the genus, Lichmophora within the family Fragilariaceae although no description has yet been published. Species of Lichmophora are common benthic diatoms in these waters as an epiphyte on macroalgae and common primary fouling diatoms on test panels. The diatom reported here has not been found on any substratum other than the barnacles Tetraclita squamosa and Australobalanus imperator, very rarely on Balanus amphitrite. Analysis of the diatom distribution on the cirri shows significantly higher numbers on the posterior captorial cirri. The effect of commensal diatoms on the feeding efficiency of the barnacles is discussed.

Résumé :
The application of diatom analysis in determining whether drowning was the cause of death has proved to be a valuable tool in forensic science. The basic principal of the “diatom test” in drowning is based on inference that diatoms are present in the medium where the possible drowning took place and that the inhalation of water causes penetration of diatoms into the alveolar system and blood stream, and thus, their deposition into the brain, kidneys, and other organs.I provide an informal assessment of “reliability” of the “diatom test” through correlations between control samples and samples from organs and clothing in two case studies. In studies, all organ and clothing samples except one had matching analogues in the modern diatom dataset from the body recovery sites, reinforcing drowning as the cause of death. The analogue matching provides further information on the precise site of drowning, in particular differentiating between drowning in a bathtub versus a naturally occurring body of water.

Résumé :
Abstract: Diatoms are unique algae. They are scientifically known as Bacillariophyceae. Diatoms have been used in forensic science in a variety of ways, the most frequent being the diagnosis of death by drowning. When a person drowns, water will enter the lungs and then enter the bloodstream through ruptures in the peripheral alveoli before being carried to the other organs such as the liver and heart. Naturally, the microscopic contents of the water, which will include diatoms, will pass into the blood as well. The detection of diatoms in the organs can contribute to a diagnosis of death by drowning, a process referred to as the ‘diatom test’. A study was conducted in the department of Forensic Science, SHUATS, Prayagraj which included the extraction and identification of diatoms from the collected water samples from three different sites of Kaalesar Ghat of Rapti River in Gorakhpur. The acid digestion method was used for diatom extraction. And, after analysis total 13 diatom species were found. The identified diatoms were of great ecological assessment that plays an important role in criminal investigations related to premortem or ante-mortem drowning. In this study, instead of acid digestion method, colloidal silica gradient centrifuge method was used to extraction diatom and the advantages of this technique has been aimed to be discussed. Materials and Methods: Therefore, 30 visceral and body fluid samples that have been obtained from corpses which were removed from the water and brought to the Council of Forencic Medicine to perform autopsy, were examined and diatom were obtained from samples of 19 cases. Moreover, the diatoms that were obtained from the swab samples taken from the outer body surfaces and the diatoms obtained from the visceral organs were compared. Résumé :
The contemporaneous effect of natural and anthropogenic factors involved in a watershed contribution to the seasonal and spatial variation of diatom community composition is widely discussed in the scientific literature. Yet, there is a paucity of scientific evidence indicating the effect of these factors on diatoms in tropical African regions characterized by distinct dry and wet seasons and season associated human activities like rainfed agriculture are commonly practiced. We applied multivariate techniques to determine the spatio-temporal drivers of diatom assemblage and diatom species richness in human influenced rivers and streams in Ethiopia. We simultaneously collected water and diatom samples from 24 sampling points during the wet (July) and dry (February) seasons. Both water and diatom samples were processed following standard procedures. We identified 169 species belonging to 45 genera in the studied lotic systems. We found that both season and land use factors were important in defining diatom composition (PERMANOVA, p<0.05) and species richness (ANOVA, p<0.05) patterns. Diatom community composition was driven by conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, and turbidity parameters (Monte Carlo permutation test, p<0.05). Besides, diatom species richness was driven by dissolved oxygen, soluble reactive phosphorus, and turbidity (GLMM, p<0.05). The study highlighted physicochemical parameters influenced by seasonal variation and human activity determined the composition of diatoms. This implies that the unique feature of heavy rain during the rainy season in the region followed by extensive flooding aggravated by the steep slope from the highlands to the lowlands plays a major role in shaping the diatom autecology in the region. Therefore, in applying biomonitoring in such regions considering the effect of runoff and dilution is imperative.

Résumé :
Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) are unicellular algae inhabiting in aquatic ecosystems and marsh habitats on the entire Earth. This group of algae, variable in terms of species, comprises both cosmopolitan ones but also those whose occurrence is limited to specific environmental conditions, i.e. stenotopic species. Diatoms are distinguished by unique cell walls making so-called, frustules, whose structures constitute the bases for differentiation between species. Frustules are resistant to the majority of environmental conditions that destroy other algae. Due to the above characteristics diatoms have been incorporated in forensic investigations and they can be the conclusive component of the proceedings by indicating drowning as the cause of death. In those cases, it is important to answer the question whether finding diatoms in internal organs of corpses found in water always proves drowning. The publication uses reports from forensic medical examinations of corpses and reports from detecting presence of diatoms in internal organs performed in years 2013-2017 in the Institute of Forensic Medicine of Warsaw Medical University, which is presently the only centre in Poland that routinely performs the diatom test. It has been demonstrated that a positive result of the diatom test generally coincides with the conclusive indications of the cause of death in the forensic medical autopsy reports. Only in few individual well-explainable cases the results of the diatom tests did not confirm conclusions from the forensic autopsies, which excluded drowning as the cause of death.

Résumé :
AbstractDifferent types of biogenic remains, ranging from siliceous algae to carbonate precipitates, accumulate in the sediments of lakes and other aquatic ecosystems. Unicellular algae called diatoms, which form a siliceous test or frustule, are an ecologically and biogeochemically important group of organisms in aquatic environments and are often preserved in lake or marine sediments. When diatoms accumulate in large numbers in sediments, the fossilized remains can form diatomite. In sedimentological literature, “diatomite” is defined as a friable, light-coloured, sedimentary rock with a diatom content of at least 50%, however, in the Quaternary science literature diatomite is commonly used as a description of a sediment type that contains a “large” quantity of diatom frustules without a precise description of diatom abundance. Here we pose the question: What is diatomite? What quantity of diatoms define a sediment as diatomite? Is it an uncompacted sediment or a compacted sediment? We provide a short overview of prior practices and suggest that sediment with more than 50% of sediment weight comprised of diatom SiO2 and having high (>70%) porosity is diatomaceous ooze if unconsolidated and diatomite if consolidated. Greater burial depth and higher temperatures result in porosity loss and recrystallization into porcelanite, chert, and pure quartz.

Résumé :
This is a study of autobiographical letters written in the early 1950s by seven Swedish sailors. The letters were contributions to a project at the Nordiska Museet in Stockholm aiming to collect and publicize workers' autobiographical narratives. The aim of this thesis is to analyze how the sailors composed their narratives in dialogue not only with heroic epics and other oral and written literary traditions but also with folklore studies and with contemporary public conversations about Sweden. According to Bachtin, any given text must be understood as a dialogue with the entire history of literature and the analysis in this study shows that the sailors' narratives are composed according to the pattern of the returning Homeric hero: the hero by destiny, the hero by action, and the hero by tradition. In terms of contents the letters are centered on two major themes: the two world wars and the transformation of Sweden from a poor rural society into a modern well-fare state. These themes are dramatized in plots, test-conflicts, motifs, and motif-complexes (functions, motiphemes), well-known from oral traditions and classical drama. An experiment in which two of the letters are subjected to “ethnopoetic transcription” shows the nature and extent of the oral idiom used by the writers. Two other writers display their literary ambitions through an abundance of paraphrases and hidden quotations. For the museum staff, the sailors' contributions were problematic. The verbal artistry of the writers challenged assumptions that workers' life narratives should be “simple and ingenious descriptions” and transparent sources of ethnological data. Furthermore, the sailors' frankness about Sweden's and their own part in the world wars challenged the myth of the neutrality and peacefulness of the Swedish folkhem.

Résumé :
As computers and their networks continue to be developed, our day-to-day lives are being surrounded by increasingly more complex instruments, and we often have to ask questions about using them. At the same time, large collections of texts to answer these questions are being gathered. Therefore, there are potential answers to many of our questions that exist as texts somewhere. However, there are various gaps between our various questions and the texts, and these prevent us from accessing appropriate texts to answer our questions. The gaps are mainly composed of both expression and vagueness gaps. When we seek texts for answers using conventional keyword-based text retrieval systems, we often have trouble locating them. In contrast, when we ask experts on instruments or operators of call centers, they can resolve the various gaps, by interpreting our questions flexibly, and by producing some ask-backs. The problem with experts and call centers is that they are not always available. Two approaches have been studied to resolve the various gaps: the extension of keyword-based text retrieval systems, and the application of artificial intelligence techniques. However, these approaches have their respective limitations. The former uses texts or keywords as methods for ask-back questions, but these methods are not always suitable. The latter requires a specialized knowledge base described in formal languages, so it cannot be applied to existing collections with large amount of texts. This thesis targets real-world the large text collections provided by Microsoft Corporation, and addresses a novel methodology to resolve the gaps between various user questions and the texts. The methodology consists of two key solutions: precise and flexible methods of matching user questions with texts based on NLP (natural language processing) techniques, and ask-back methods using the matching methods. First, the matching methods, including sentence structure analysis and expression gap resolution, are described. In addition, these methods are extended into matching through metonymy, which is frequently observed in natural languages. After that, a solution to make ask backs based on these matching methods, by using two kinds of ask-backs that complement each other, is proposed. Both ask-backs navigate users from vague questions to specific answers. Finally, our methodology is evaluated through the real-world operation of a dialog system, Dialog Navigator, in which all the proposed methods are implemented. Chapter 1 discusses issues on information retrieval, and present which issues are to be solved. That is, it examines the question logs from a real-world natural-language-based text retrieval system, and organizes types and factors of the gaps. The examination indicates that some gaps between user questions and texts cannot be resolved well by methods used in previous studies, and suggests that both interactions with users and applicability to real-world text collections are needed. Based on the discussion, a solution to deal with these gaps is proposed, by advancing an approach employed in open-domain question-answering systems, i.e., utilization of recent NLP techniques, into resolving the various gaps. Chapter 2 proposes several methods of matching user questions with texts, based on the NLP techniques. Of these techniques, sentence structure analysis through fullparsing is essential for two reasons: first, it enables expression gaps to be resolved beyond the keyword level; second, it is indispensable in resolving vagueness gaps by providing ask-backs. Our methods include: sentence structure analysis using a Japanese parser KNP, expression-gap resolution based on two kinds of dictionaries, text-collection selection through question-type estimates, and score calculations based on sentence structures. An experimental evaluation on testsets shows significant improvements of performance by our methods. Chapter 3 proposes a novel method of processing metonymy, as an extension of the matching methods proposed in Chapter 2. Metonymy is a figure of speech in which the name of one thing is substituted for that of something else to which it is related, and this frequently occurs in both user questions and texts. Namely, this chapter addresses the automatic acquisition of pairs of metonymic expressions and their interpretative expressions from large corpora, and applies the acquired pairs to resolving structural gaps caused by metonymy. Unlike previous studies on metonymy, the method targets both recognition and interpretation process of metonymy. The method acquired 1, 126 pairs from corpora, and over 80% of the pairs were correct as interpretations of metonymy. Furthermore, an experimental evaluation on the testsets demonstrated that introducing the acquired pairs significantly improves matching. Chapter 4 presents a strategy of navigating users from vague questions to specific texts based on the previously discussed matching methods. Of course, it is necessary to make some use of ask-backs to achieve this, and this strategy involves two approaches: description extraction as a bottom-up approach, and dialog cards as a top-down approach. The former extracts the neighborhoods of the part that matches the user question in each text through matching methods. Such neighborhoods are mostly suitable for ask-backs that clarify vague user questions. However, if a user’s question is too vague, this approach often fails. The latter covers vague questions based on the know-how of the call center; dialog cards systematize procedures for ask-backs to clarify frequently asked questions that are vague. Matching methods are also applied to match user questions with the cards. Finally, a comparison of the approaches with those used in other related work demonstrates the novelty of the approaches. Chapter 5 describes the architecture for Dialog Navigator, a dialog system in which all the proposed methods are implemented. The system uses the real-world large text collections provided by Microsoft Corporation, and it has been open to the public on a website from April 2002. The methods were evaluated based on the real-world operational results of the system, because the various gaps to be resolved should reflect those in the real-world. The evaluation proved the effectiveness of the methods: more than 70% of all user questions were answered with relevant texts, the behaviors of both users and the system were reasonable with most dialogs, and most of the extracted descriptions for ask-backs were suitably matched. Chapter 6 concludes the thesis.

Abstract  The aim of the study is to gain an understanding of how two teachers in the lower level of compulsory school, through the way they organize the teaching of reading with a focus on reading aloud, give pupils a possibility to converse about texts in order to develop an understanding of the texts. The study builds on two observations that focus on the possibilities that teachers give the pupils for conversation and the activities that deepen their understanding of the text they have read. Supplementary material consists of interviews with the two teachers. The collected material has been analysed with two analytical tools, sequential reading elements and textual mobility. The theoretical premises for the study are the sociocultural perspective (Säljö, 2012), reception theory (Rosenblatt, 2002; Langer, 2005) and Christie’s (1998) view of the teaching process in terms of macro-genres. The teachers’ comments from the study show that both teachers have the intention to ask reflective questions which give the pupils a chance for conversation at both associative and interactive level, but the observations showed that most of the teachers’ questions gave the pupils a possibility to move within the text through text-based mobility.

Résumé :
This paper researches how different amounts of data affect different word vector models for classification of dialog system user input. A hypothesis is tested that there is a data threshold for dense vector models to reach the state-of-the-art performance that have been shown with recent research, and that character-level n-gram word-vector classifiers are especially suited for Swedish classifiers–because of compounding and the character-level n-gram model ability to vectorize out-of-vocabulary words. Also, a second hypothesis is put forward that models trained with single statements are more suitable for chat user input classification than models trained with full conversations. The results are not able to support neither of our hypotheses but show that sparse vector models perform very well on the binary classification tasks used. Further, the results show that 799,544 words of data is insufficient for training dense vector models but that training the models with full conversations is sufficient for single statement classification as the single-statement- trained models do not show any improvement in classifying single statements.

Abstract Diatoms are a group of single-celled photosynthetic algae that use biochemical pathways to bio-mineralize and self-assemble three-dimensional photonic crystals with unique photonic and micro- & nano-fluidic properties. In recent years, diatom biosilica has been used in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) based optofluidic sensors for detection of a variety of chemical and biological molecules. In this paper, we present a study to develop a microfluidic pumping system using super-hydrophilic diatom thin films. The desire to develop such a system stems from the requirement to create a low-cost, self-powered microfluidic pumping system that can sustain a continuous flow over an extended period of time. The diatom biosilica acts not only as the driving force behind the flow, but also serves as ultra-sensitive SERS substrates that allows for trace detection of various molecules. Liquid is drawn from a reservoir to the tip of a 150μm inner diameter capillary tube positioned directly over the diatom film. A thin and long horizontal reservoir is used to prevent flooding on the diatom film when the liquid is initially drawn to the diatom film through a capillary tube from the reservoir. The connection of the meniscus from the capillary to the film was maintained from a horizontal reservoir for a recorded time of 20 hours and 32 minutes before the partially filled reservoir emptied. Flow rates of 0.38, 0.22 and 0.16μL/min were achieved for square biosilica thin films of 49mm2, 25mm2, and 9mm2 at a temperature of 63°F and 45% relative humidity respectively. A temperature-controlled system was introduced for the 49mm2 substrate and flow rates of 0.60, 0.82, 0.93, and 1.15μL/min were observed at 72, 77, 86, and 95°F at 21% relative humidity respectively. More testing and analysis will be performed to test the operation limits of the proposed self-powered microfluidic system.

Résumé :
Text Generation Models (TGMs) succeed in creating text that matches human language style reasonably well. Detectors that can distinguish between TGM-generated text and human-written ones play an important role in preventing abuse of TGM. In this paper, we describe our pipeline for the two DIALOG-22 RuATD tasks: detecting generated text (binary task) and classification of which model was used to generate text (multiclass task) (Shamardina et al., 2022). We achieved 1st place on the binary classification task with an accuracy score of 0.82995 on the private test set and 4th place on the multiclass classification task with an accuracy score of 0.62856 on the private test set. We proposed an ensemble method of different pre-trained models based on the attention mechanism.

Résumé :
We have shown previously that the losses of foveal flicker sensitivity following extinction of a bleach can be either precipitous or gradual, depending critically on the spectral characteristics of both the bleach and test.1 These losses, measured with 18-Hz flicker, also depend on the size and retinal location of the stimuli. At an eccentricity of 4.5°, precipitous losses of sensitivity to 20′ diam tests occur earlier than they do at the fovea. As the parafoveal tests are enlarged, the precipitous losses of sensitivity occur later [e.g., at 1 vs 3 min for 20′ vs 1° diam long wavelength tests that follow extinction of a 4.90-log troland (Td) 540-nm bleach]. As the tests are enlarged more (e.g., to 2° following extinction of the 540-nm bleach), the losses become less precipitous, often resembling the gradual losses found at the fovea for certain spectral combinations of bleaches and 20′ diam tests (the same diameter tests we used previously). On the other hand, when stimuli which result in gradual losses foveally (e.g., a 20′ diam 578-nm test following a 580-nm 4.85-log Td bleach) are moved to the parafovea, the losses can become early and precipitous. Making these foveal tests smaller can also result in precipitous losses. The data suggest that (a) precipitous losses are associated with relatively small tests, while delayed or gradual losses are associated with relatively large tests and (b) the relevant spatial dimensions depend on the spectral parameters of the bleach and test as well as on the retinal locus.
