Texte intégralEl, Deek Hosry Manar. « Interrogations into Female Identity in Arab American literature ». Thesis, Paris 4, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA040024.
Texte intégralThis dissertation analyses contemporary Arab-American literary productions by female writers, specifically, Shakir’s collection of memoirs Bint Arab and her two short stories “Oh Lebanon” and “Name Calling,” as well as a selection of novels, Abu Jaber’s Arabian Jazz and Crescent, Darraj’s The Inheritance of Exile, Alia Yunis’s The Night Counter, and Laila Halaby’s Once in a Promised Land. It shows how these works construct a space which enables them to investigate questions of identity, culture, ethnicity and gender. Identity conflicts around everyday matters like physical appearance, color, dress codes, veiling, chastity, and marriage are addressed by drawing upon critical works by Arab-American female writers and psycho-social studies on biculturalism. Moreover, this work emphasizes coalition-building with women of color by extending Anzaldua’s concept of the “consciousness of the borderlands” to encompass works by Arab-American female writers. Theories by post-colonial thinkers, particularly Said’s studies on Orientalism, also contribute to the dissertation’s questioning of the Oriental model of womanhood. Finally, this dissertation envisages critical works that study storytelling and its role in creating a surrogate home for “exilic” identities, with special emphasis on the Scheherazadian narrative. This project views literary productions as an appropriate way to investigate social, political, cultural and ethnic issues. It shows how writings by Arab-American women contribute to exploring inner identity conflicts, how they connect with other minority groups, and how they create a new sense of home

Texte intégralThe female literature in the post-colonial societies is considered by Gayatri C. Spivak as a process of metonymic saga of women used as a complain instrument, which allows the myths and the prejudices failure a long time reinforced by the patriarchal discourse. Among the women who found her voice and spoke up, no longer considered as only native informants of oral histories of their culture deserve mention the Cape Verdean Dina Salústio, Vera Duarte, Fátima Bettencourt, Orlanda Amarilis and Dulce Almada Duarte, and the Mozambican Paulina Chiziane and Lilia Momplé. The objective of this work is to investigate in the Dina Salústios and Paulina Chizianes novels A Louca de Serrano and O alegre canto da perdiz, respectively, how the insanity theme is built, represented by the african women (and characters) Louca de Serrano and Maria das Dores, which can be understood as a voice full of loneliness, pain, denial, rebelliousness and nonconformism and as a resistance mark to the women marginalization into and by the hegemonic social practices.

Texte intégralMany social movements have emerged in recent decades which have questioned standards set by the patriarchal system, leading us into a discussion around new masculinities and femininities, the relation between genders, the crisis of the masculine and the advancement of women. In Cape Verde, these themes have constantly been discussed by society, finding in literature a space for the representation of masculine and feminine models. From the analysis of three fictional works, Estátuas de Sal (2003) by Evel Rocha, Estórias de dentro de casa (1998) by Germano Almeida, and Mornas eram as noites (1994) by Dina Salústio and based on a diverse theoretical and interdisciplinary corpus that deals with themes such as the social construction of masculinity, male domination, the relationship between male and female, among others, besides documents and reports that contextualize the situation of the country, our work aims at presenting the way in which the literary discourse has expressed these new masculinities and femininities, ranging from the more traditional structures to new possibilities for genders and possible paths towards transforming these relations.

Eroticism is a variation of human sexual activity that goes beyond the penetration. It binds to sexuality and human sexual practices, in this sense, it is related to the privacy of the human being, besides being a conscious practice of the imagination and of the human desire. Eroticism is one of the features that differ animal and human. So, in eroticism, there is the awakening of desire, constructed from the subtlety of the bodies presentation, allowing arise, at that moment, interest in pleasure. Under the vision of eroticism, we will analyze the work Diana Hunter, written by Marcia Denser, in which the main character is a woman who experiences sexual adventures, since the focus is to give and receive sexual pleasure. In this work, the central subject is sexuality and female identity, which are addressed through heterosexualmeetings of pure eroticism. Therefore, the eroticism is essential to the reflection on Denser´s narrative and is necessary to understand how it is used by the author to think how the phallocentric ideal interfere in female sexual desire and how Denser uses sexuality and desire as a female liberating, besides dicussing an ideology that pleasure is restricted to men, since, by social conventions, the male figure is linked to the representation of power and dominance and female figure is related to the inferiority, devoted to women. Thus, the erotic language is a facet used by the writer to propose changes in the woman´s posture in the midst of a prejudiced society. We will analyze, from concepts of eroticism, the relations built up between this and the assertation of identity of the women in the narrative, because it is through erotic aesthetic that Marcia Denser introduces a discourse of identity assertation in which the expressions of the body, of the sexuality and of the female desire are addressed. The theoretical framework is basea on the concepts of: Octavio Paz (1994), Jesus Antônio Durigan (1986), Lúcia Castelo Branco (2004), Michel Foucault (1982; 2001), Georges Bataille (1987), Sarane Alexandrian (1993), Anthony Giddens (1993), Glaydson Silva (2003), Mary Del Priore (2011), Marina Colassanti (1997), Simonde de Beauvoir (1967), Miclelle Perrot (2003), Stuart Hall (2006)among others.

The Girl Gang: Women Writers of the New York City Beat Community seeks to revise our understanding of the Beat community and literary tradition by critically engaging the lives and work of five women Beat writers: Diane di Prima, Joyce Johnson, Hettie Jones, Carol Bergé, and Mimi Albert. This dissertation argues that, from a position of marginality, these women developed as protofeminist writers, interrogating the traditional female gender role and constructing radical critiques of normative ideas in fiction and poetry in ways that resisted the male Beats' general subordination of women and that anticipated the feminist movement of the late 1960s and 1970s. A project of recovery and criticism, The Girl Gang provides literary biographies that explore how each writer's experience as a marginalized female writer within an otherwise countercultural community affected the development of her work; it also analyzes a range of works (published and unpublished texts from various genres, written from the early 1950s through the turn of the twenty-first century) in order to illustrate how each writer distinctively employs and revises mainstream and Beat literary and cultural conventions. The dissertation's critical analyses examine each writer's engagement in various literary, cultural, and social discourses, drawing attention to their incisive and provocative treatment of thematic issues that are central to the postwar countercultural critique of hegemonic norms --including fundamental Beat questions of identity, authenticity, and subjectivity-- and that are developed through experimentation with literary conventions. Ultimately, The Girl Gang argues that the literary achievements of the New York City women Beats collectively reconceptualize the prevailing notion of the Beat community and canon.

Texte intégralIn a number of didactic and sapiential works of the Middle Ages, the animal is used as a representation of the prince and his entourage. The animal is sometimes a filter, sometimes a mask, looking at the princely courts by more or less involved authors. They find in the animal the most expressive tool to expose some values or to denounce some behaviours. Our study is based on a variety of sources, mainly the Calila et Dimna composed in Castile in the middle of the 13th century for the Infante Alfonso (future Alfonso X); the analysis includes a study of the Calila et Dimna textual path: what are the differences between Indian (Panchatantra), Persian, Arabic (Kalila wa Dimna), Hebrew, Castilian and Latin (Jean de Capoue and Raymond de Béziers) versions ? The study is supported by a comparison between some Indian, Persian and Arabic texts offering a thematic relevance in the animal world with this treatise. Latin and French (Roman de Renart, Roman de Fauvel secondarily) texts complete the corpus. We are also wondering about the Greco-Latin antique fable influence on the treatise (Esope, Avianus), concerning the choice of the animals and their characteristics. The modes of transmission to the Occident of other texts that followed parallel ways (Sandbar, Secret des Secrets, Roman des Sept Sages de Rome) are reviewed. We will be wondering whether the Calila et Dimna was not, as le Roman de Renart or le Roman de Fauvel, the caricature of a certain curial milieu that contemporary readers had no difficulty to recognise; Both the Arabic and the Castilian version of the treatise are concerned, on the understanding that each successive translator contextualised this vision of court. We will seek to understand the function and the mechanisms of these animal masks: beyond the complex bestiary, which will be thoroughly analysed, how and to what extent the animal is used as a filter for political criticism, how it constitutes the mirror of a court life, and what are the reflected images of the courtiers ? What animals are chosen (depending on the version) to embody one courtier or another ? Which moral precepts, character traits or symbolic values, each « humanised » animal is transmitting ? Why use animals ? Are they there to amuse princes or to allow the authors to tell more than they could with human heroes ? Is the animal a mask or a mirror ?

Texte intégralWithin the scope of recent work on cultural transfer, Robert Dion devoted a book (L’Allemagne de Liberté: sur la germanophilie des intellectuels québécois, 2007) observing that several contributors of Quebec journal Liberté expressed a perception of Germany mostly tinged with the concept of fascination. In the wake of this study which focuses on articles and essays published in Liberté and concerning Germany, the present thesis provides an in depth analysis of short stories and novels, written by three collaborators from the journal: Diane-Monique Daviau, Yvon Rivard and Pierre Turgeon. Featuring rather extensive references to Germany, their texts offer a perception of the “Other” which can, from the point of view of intercultural studies, be considered in the perspective of an “encounter” between cultures. It is therefore the relationship with the German language, geographical territory, history and literature which we endeavour to characterize, seeking not only to appreciate and describe the nature of the relationship to “otherness”, but also to briefly discuss the formal consequences of a literary staging of the “Other” – polyphonic practices, types of intertextual processes, etc. This thesis presents innovative thinking on the themes of exile, decentring and migration in contemporary Quebec literature. It links the German framework to the self-investigation performed by the Daviau, Rivard and Turgeon protagonists, revealing that in their personal search, these characters acknowledge their own precariousness, and, in certain cases, a “legacy of poverty” (Yvon Rivard) – two omnipresent themes in Quebec literature.
Sylvain, Laurence.
Texte intégralThe present thesis seeks to address, in a reading of the text Le bain de Diane by Pierre Klossowski, the specific modalities through which literature aims to understand the complex ties between concepts of 'immanence' and 'transcendence'. To do so, I begin by introducing the concepts necessary for such an undertaking ⎯ reading authors such as Plato, Apuleius, Pierre Hadot, Gilles Deleuze and Michel Foucault, all of whom have contributed to the concept of the 'demon' as described in Klossowski’s work ⎯ and by introducing the concept of 'simulacrum', a key concept in Klossowsi’s writing. By tracing the creation and representation of these concepts in various texts and then identifying them in Le bain de Diane, I attempt to demonstrate the importance of literary figuration in our complex relationship with concepts of the 'sensitive' and the 'suprasensitive'.
Tremblay, Sylvie.
Texte intégralUsing unwoven fragments, pieces of the past, of the present and even dreams for the future, Les rubans bleus’s narrator reflects on the meaning of the different women in her life. Thus, she attemps to sew the lineage from which she came and to weed a story that will stay frayed. The different women encountered structure the reattached narrative, bringing together like a quilt, in a heterogenous manner, the memories of an “I”. In the narrative Ma mère et Gainsbourg by Diane-Monique Daviau, the omnipresent pattern of the dress constitutes an envelop for the psyche that allows an imaginary continuum between a mother and a daughter, the narrator. She describes this dress as having holes in it. The reoccurence of this dress in the text prefigures the absence that is felt by the daughter as she mourns her mother. The narrator puts forth the many holes in the dress through gaps which read like silences and emptiness between the mother and daughter. These snags in the dress imprinted on the narrator’s identity and founded a “burdon-heritage” that the narrator wears, and shares in her book. With her writing, she invites the reader to a slow passage through the mourning process (Anzieu, Delvaux, Green, Harel). The latter presents itself as the thread with which the narrator will sew the pieces of her life together, which in turn will allow for a better fit pertaining to the figure of the absent-mother, and from there, to her own identity. Hence, the narrator ties together childhood memories, dreams and reflections about loss and emptiness, like a patchwork, giving form to her text, that of a mourning dress.

The aim of this essay was to understand the thematic and discursive aspects of some literary chronicles of two Cape-Verdean authors, Dina Salústio and Daniel Medina and to prove the humanitarian and pedagogical aspects of the their writings. At first we did a study of theoretical contents about Portuguese chronicles with the aim to survey aspects concerning the evolution of this style throughout time, since the Middle Ages until Contemporary Era, always in a pragmatic perspective and we have discussed the characteristics which formed the style with emphasis on subjectivity, versatility, objectivity, style between oral and literary, everyday life and dialogism. Then, in methodological terms we opted to convoke the ethos of Amossy and Maingueneau to study the writings. Secondly, through ten Cape-Verdean literary chronicles, being five from each author we went on with the critical analysis from which we confirmed, from a thematic analysis, a humanitarian and pedagogical concern, once we noticed some troubles with problems concerning the idiosyncrasy of the Cape-Verdean people, such as the loss of values in terms of education and instruction whether in the bosom of the family or at school, a concern with the underprivileged, where we highlight orphan children whose parents are alive, the abandon of mental sick people and children who live in the streets, premature pregnancy, juvenile prostitution among others. The way the writers of chronicles positioned themselves concerning the approach of the themes allowed us to project the discursive ethos in these two sensitive personalities, sober and committed with the noble values which affect the human being. The same way, we have realized as relevant aspects of the writings, subjectivity, individuality and discursive personality, brevity, the dialog in a free indirect style, everyday life and literature combined with some rhetorical resources which allow us to verify the serious and ironic tones of the subjects which deal with thematic matters.
