Résumé :
Pasiūlytas naujas skaičiavimo metodas vidutinių betono įtempimų-deformacijų diagramoms nustatyti, naudojant lenkiamųjų gelžbetoninių elementų eksperimentų duomenis. Turint eksperimentines momentų-kreivių ir momentų-deformacijų diagramas gaunama visa tempiamo betono vidutinių įtempimų-deformacijų diagrama, įskaitant ir jos krentančiąją dalį. Taip pat, net neturint duomenų apie betono savybes, galima pakankamai tiksliai rasti ir gniuždomo betono diagramą. Skaičiavimas pagrįstas nauja idėja, kai tempiamo ir gniuždomo betono įtempimų- deformacijų diagramos skaičiuojamos kraštiniams lenkiamo elemento sluoksniams. Turint eksperimentines kraštinių sluoksnių deformacijas kiekvienai apkrovos pakopai randami tų sluoksnių įtempimų prieaugiai. Kiekvienoje apkrovos pakopoje gautos diagramos taikomos kitiems mažiau deformuotiems sluoksniams. Pasiūlytasis metodas patikrintas skaičiavimais.

Straipsnyje aprašomi nauji pasiekimai, plėtojant neseniai pasiūlytą metodą [1–5], kuriuo ič lenkiamų gelžbetoninių sijų eksperimentinių duomenų gali bųti nustatytos betono vidutinių įtempių-deformacijų diagramos. Turint eksperimentines momentų-kreivių ir momentų-deformacijų diagramas, gaunama pilna tempiamo betono vidutinių įtempių-deformacijų diagrama, įskaitant ir jos krentančiają dalį. Taip pat, net neturint duomenų apie betono savybes, pakankamai tiksliai galima rasti ir gniuždomo betono diagramą. Skaičiavimas pagrįstas nauja idėja, kai tempiamo ir gniuždomo betono vidutinių įtempių-deformacijų diagramos skaičiuojamos kraštiniams lenkiamo elemento sluoksniams. Turint eksperimentines kraštinių sluoksnių deformacijas, kiekvienai apkrovos pakopai nustatomi tų sluoksnių įtempių prieaugiai. Kiekvienoje apkrovos pakopoje gautos diagramos taikomos kitiems mažiau deformuotiems sluoksniams. Pasiūlytasis metodas patikrintas skaitiškai. Remiantis šiuo metodu, pasiūlytos dvi inžinerinės skaičiavimo metodikos, įvertinančios eksperimentinių duomenų išsibarstymą. Pirmaja metodika, turint vieną eksperimentinę momentų-vidutinių deformacijų (kreivių) diagramą, nustatoma tempiamo betono vidutinių įtempių-deformacijų kreivė. Šiuo atveju gniuždomo betono įtempių-deformacijų kreivė yra laikoma žinoma. Antraja metodika, turint dvi eksperimentines momentų-vidutinių deformacijų (kreivių) diagramas, iteraciniu būdu nustatomos tiek tempiamo, tiek gniuždomo betono vidutinių įtempių-deformacijq kreivės. Pastaruoju atveju laikoma, kad betono diagrama yra žinomos parabolės formos, o ją apibrėžiantys dydžiai—betono tamprumo modulis ir prizminis (arba cilindrinis) stipris nustatomi skaičiavimu.

O uso da cor em diagramas na Engenharia de Software não é novidade, em especial na Linguagem Unificada de Modelagem (UML), que consiste em um conjunto de quinze diagramas utilizados para documentar e especificar a complexidade de um software. Porém, a aplicação da cor muitas vezes é feita de forma aleatória ficando a cargo da subjetividade do projetista ou dos softwares utilizados para o desenho destes diagramas. O presente artigo aborda o uso das cores no diagrama de classes da UML segundo o modelo proposto por Coad, Lefebvre e De Luca (1999), que aplica a cor a partir de uma prática profissional utilizando post-its. O objetivo deste artigo é realizar uma análise descritiva da aplicação da cor para demonstrar a importância desta não só para melhorar a estética, mas também como símbolo, facilitando a leitura, compreensão e o estabelecimento de relações no diagrama de classes.*****The use of color in diagrams in Software Engineering is not new, especially in the Unified Modeling Language (UML), which consists of a set of fifteen diagrams used to document and specify the complexity of software. However, the application of color is often done in a random way, being in charge of the subjectivity of the designer or the software used to design these diagrams. This paper discusses the use of colors in the UML class diagram according to the model proposed by Coad, Lefebvre and De Luca (1999), who apply color from a professional practice using post-its. The purpose of this article is to perform a descriptive analysis of the application of color to demonstrate the importance of this not only to improve aesthetics but also as a symbol, facilitating reading, understanding and establishing relationships in the class diagram.

Addition is one of the timing critical operations in most of modern processing units. For decades, extensive research has been done devoted to designing higher speed and less complex adder architectures, and to developing advanced adder implementation technologies. Decision diagrams are a promising approach to the efficient many-bit adder design. Since traditional binary decision diagrams does not match perfectly with the task of modelling adder architectures, other types of diagram were proposed. If-decision diagrams provide a parallel many-bit adder model with the time complexity of Ο(log2n) and area complexity of Ο(n×log2n). The paper propose a technique, which produces adder diagrams with such properties by systematically cutting the diagram’s longest paths. The if-diagram based adders are competitive to the known efficient Brent-Kung adder and its numerous modifications. We propose a blocked structure of the parallel if-diagram-based adders, and introduce an adder table representation, which is capable of systematic producing if-diagram of any bit-width. The representation supports an efficient mapping of the adder diagrams to VHDL-modules at structural and dataflow levels. The paper also shows how to perform the adder space exploration depending on the circuit fan-out. FPGA-based synthesis results and case-study comparisons of the if-diagram-based adders to the Brent-Kung and majority-invertor gate adders show that the new adder architecture leads to faster and smaller digital circuits.

The paper deals with analysis of structural lightweight concrete. New lightweight concrete mixture made with expanded clay aggregate has been proposed and applied for experimental rein-forced concrete beams. Totally 8 beams with different rein-forcement ratios (0.309%, 0.557%, 0.895% and 1.255%) were tested under short-term four point bending loading. Stress-strain behavior of the beams under considerations has been investigated. Average strains at 4 different levels of pure bend-ing zone and vertical displacements at 12 different points of the beam were measured. During the test, deformations and crack-ing of the pure bending zone were additionally observed using high-speed digital video cameras. The data obtained by cameras were analyzed using digital image correlation technique. Applying the test data bending moments and curvature diagrams were derived for each beam. The obtained relationships were compared with theoretical results calculated using design code methods LST EN and STR. Using the inverse algorithm developed by VGTU, tension reinforced lightweight concrete stress and strain diagrams were obtained, which were adapted to numerical modeling by software ATENA. Moment and curvature diagrams obtained by finite elements program were compared with experimental moment and curvature diagrams. Good agreement between both diagrams has been obtained. Straipsnyje aprašytas naujai sukurtas konstrukcinis lengvasis betonas ir jo panaudojimas eksperimentinių armuotojo lengvojo betono sijų gamybai. Atlikti trumpalaike apkrova veikiamų plieniniais strypais armuotų lengvojo betono sijų eksperimentiniai tyrimai, kuriuose nagrinėtas sijų įtempių ir deformacijų būvis. Laboratorijoje išbandyti 8 lenkiamieji elementai, kurių armavimo procentai: 0,309 %, 0,557 %, 0,895 % ir 1,255 %. Tyrimų metu matuotos vidutinės elemento deformacijos grynojo lenkimo zonoje 4 skirtinguose lygmenyse bei sijų poslinkiai ties atramomis, jėgos pridėjimo vietose ir viduriniame pjūvyje (iš viso 12 matavimo taškų). Bandymo metu grynojo lenkimo zonos deformacijos bei pleišėjimas papildomai stebėti greitaeige vaizdo kamera. Gauti rezultatai panaudoti sudarant eksperimentines lenkimo momentų ir kreivių diagramas, kurios palygintos su teoriškai apskaičiuotomis taikant Lietuvoje galiojančių LST EN ir STR projektavimo normų metodikas. Taikant VGTU sukurtą atvirkštinio uždavinio algoritmą, gautos tempiamo armuotojo lengvojo betono įtempių ir deformacijų diagramos, kurios pritaikytos atliekant skaitinį modeliavimą baigtinių elementų programa ATENA. Gautos momentų ir kreivių diagramos baigtinių elementų programa palygintos su eksperimentų metu gautomis momentų ir kreivių diagramomis. Gautas geras šių diagramų sutapimas.

Neseniai autorius pasiūlė naują apskačiavimo metodą pagal kurį [1–6] iš lenkiamų gelžbetoninių sijų arba plokščių eksperimentinų duomenų gali būti nustatytos betono vidutinių įtempių-deformacijų diagramos. Turint eksperimentines momentų-kreivių ir momentų-deformacijų diagramas, gaunama išsami tempiamo betono vidutinių įtempių-deformacijų diagrama, įskaitant ir jos krintančiąją dalį. Taip pat, net neturint duomenų apie betono savybes, pakankamai tiksliai galima nustatyti ir gniuždomo betono diagramą. Ankstesniuose šio žurnalo numeriuose [1,2] buvo pateiktas teorinis metodo pagrindimas, skaitinis patikrinimas ir praktinės apskaičiavimo metodikos. Šiame straipsnyje pateikti šio metodo taikymo eksperimentinių duomenų rezultatai. Buvo atlikta 14 sijų ir 9 plokščių, kruopščiai išbandytų anglų tyrinėtojų Clarko ir Speirso [7], analizė. Sijos ir plokštės turėjo skirtingą skerspjūvio aukštį, armavimo koeficientą ir armatūros strypų skersmenį (1 lentelė). Jos buvo apkrautos dviem koncentruotomis jėgomis, tarp kurių buvo 1,2 m ilgio gryno lenkimo ruožas. Sijos buvo suskirstytos į dvi grupes (serijas): pirmosios serijos (Nr. 1–4) sijos turėjo skirtingą aukčstį, skirtingą armatūros strypų skersmenį ir skerspjūvio plotą. Antrojoje serijoje (Nr. 3, 5, 6 ir 7) armatūros strypų skerspjūvio plotas ir skersmuo buvo vienodas, tačiau kito sijų skerspjūvio aukštis. Raidė R bandinio numeryje (1 lentelė) rodo, jog buvo išbandyta identiška sija. Literatūros šaltinyje [7] pateiktos visų eksperimentinių bandinių momentų-kreivių ir momentų-vidutinių armatūros deformacijų diagramos. Išsamus tyrimas, naudojant pasiūlytąjį skaičiavimo metodą, atliktas su 7 sija (1 lentelė). Buvo parodytos sijos darbo stadijos ir detaliai aprašyti visi žingsniai, nustatant tempiamo (ir gniuždomo) betono vidutinių įtempiųdeformacijų diagramas. Parodyta, kad dėl diskretaus gelžbetoninių elementų pleišėjimo pobūdžio, eksperimentinių momentų-kreivių (deformacijų) diagramos dažnai panašios į pjūklo dantelius (1 pav.). Turint tokias deformacijų diagramas, tempiamo betono įtempių-deformacijų kreivės gaunamos panašios, t.y. banguotos (2 pav.). Tam imamos “išlygintos” momentų-kreivių (deformacijų) kreivės (1 pav.), iš kurių nustatomos analogiškos įtempių-deformacijų kreivės. Tempiamo betono vidutinių įtempių-deformacijų diagramos pirmosios ir antrosios serijų sijoms pateiktos atitinkamai 8 ir 9 pav. Gautosios diagramos labai skiriasi ir svarbiausiais įtakojančiais faktoriais laikomi armavimo koeficientas bei tempiamos armatūros strypų skersmuo. Mažėjant šiems dydžiams, tempiamo betono vidutinių įtempių-deformacijų kreivių krintanti dalis pastebimai ilgėja ir rodo padidėjusią supleišėjusio tempiamo betono įtaką bendram skerspjūvio ir viso elemento standumui.

Offline hand-drawn diagram recognition is concerned with digitizing diagrams sketched on paper or whiteboard to enable further editing. Some existing models can identify the individual objects like arrows and symbols, but they become involved in the dilemma of being unable to understand a diagram’s structure. Such a shortage may be inconvenient to digitalization or reconstruction of a diagram from its hand-drawn version. Other methods can accomplish this goal, but they live on stroke temporary information and time-consuming post-processing, which somehow hinders the practicability of these methods. Recently, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) have been proved that they perform the state-of-the-art across many visual tasks. In this paper, we propose DrawnNet, a unified CNN-based keypoint-based detector, for recognizing individual symbols and understanding the structure of offline hand-drawn diagrams. DrawnNet is designed upon CornerNet with extensions of two novel keypoint pooling modules which serve to extract and aggregate geometric characteristics existing in polygonal contours such as rectangle, square, and diamond within hand-drawn diagrams, and an arrow orientation prediction branch which aims to predict which direction an arrow points to through predicting arrow keypoints. We conducted wide experiments on public diagram benchmarks to evaluate our proposed method. Results show that DrawnNet achieves 2.4%, 2.3%, and 1.7% recognition rate improvements compared with the state-of-the-art methods across benchmarks of FC-A, FC-B, and FA, respectively, outperforming existing diagram recognition systems on each metric. Ablation study reveals that our proposed method can effectively enable hand-drawn diagram recognition.

Desde 1966, o artista Jim Rosenberg desenvolve experimentos na interface entre poesia e outras mídias, dentre os quais destacamos seus poemas-diagrama, isto é, composições poéticas permeadas por recursos notacionais esquemáticos. Analisamos aqui o poema “#1”, da Diagrams Series 6, atentando para como códigos diagramáticos são transformados em materiais poéticos por Rosenberg, convidando-nos a ler de maneira hiperconectada suas lexias verbais, não obstante a profusão informacional da interface, repleta de linhas, formas geométricas e sobreposições de palavras. Para tanto, adotamos como lentes analíticas proposições teóricas sobre a literatura como campo inespecífico (GARRAMUÑO, 2014), o sublime tecnológico (COSTA, 1995), o estatuto indicial dos diagramas (PIGNATARI, 2004) e a visualização de informação (DRUCKER, 2014). O artigo explora o envolvimento dos professores de Xangai com o currículo de Geografia no contexto das mudanças políticas do exame Gaokao. O estudo é parte de uma pesquisa de doutorado em andamento, que integra estruturas curriculares existentes (LAMBERT, 2015; PRIESTLEY et al, 2021). Neste texto será considerado, em primeiro lugar, como a reforma Gaokao afeta o status da Geografia escolar, os professores de Geografia e estudantes em Xangai. Por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas, os participantes construíram junto com a pesquisadora diagramas sobre suas práticas curriculares (curriculum making). Esses diagramas serão apresentados na forma de dois coortes: professores do pré e pós-reforma. Por fim, o artigo propõe um potencial comunicativo da prática curricular transcultural. O processo de elaboração do diagrama oferece um recurso para professores e formadores de professores no sentido de imaginar uma forma diferente na interpretação dos papéis dos docentes em sala de aula em seus trabalhos. Abstract The paper explores Shanghai teachers’ engagement with the geography curriculum within the changing Gaokao policies. The study is part of an ongoing doctorate project which creatively integrates existing curriculum making frameworks. In this paper, how the Gaokao reform affects geography’s status among schools, teachers and students in Shanghai will first be considered. This research further develops two curriculum making frameworks to design the empirical study. Through semi-structured interviews, the participants and the researcher co-constructed curriculum making diagrams. These diagrams will be presented in two cohorts: pre-Reform and post-Reform teachers. In the end, the paper proposes a cross-cultural communicative potential for curriculum making. The diagram making process provides a tool for teachers and teacher educators to imagine different interpretations of classroom teachers’ roles in their work. This work deals with the problematics of conversion of UML diagrams to code. Initially, existing solutions in this field are analyzed. Based on the gained findings, a new tool is designed and implemened. It accepts UML class diagrams and database models from the free diagramming environment Dia and for each of these offers three target languages. The key feature of this tool is its modular design allowing new target languages to be added easily.

Die Mathematiksoftware Mathcad hat sich bereits seit mehreren Jahren als Standardsoftware insbesondere in der Ausbildung an Universitäten, Fachhochschulen, Berufsschulen und Gymnasien etabliert. Die Vorteile liegen u.a. in der einfachen und mathematisch richtigen Darstellung von Gleichungen. Ebenso können Funktionsgraphen und Diagramme bequem und direkt im Arbeitsblatt erzeugt werden. Dies ist vor allem in der Ausbildung ein wesentlicher Vorteil gegenüber anderen Produkten, da auf diese Weise selbst umfangreiche Dokumentationen und Arbeitsblätter mit geringem Aufwand sehr anschaulich erstellt werden können. Im Gegensatz z.B. zu Matlab existierte allerdings in Mathcad bisher keine Möglichkeit, in Diagrammen oder an Funktionsgraphen Kommentare anzubringen, um beispielsweise bestimmte Punkte einer Funktion zu beschriften. Im Rahmen des Vortrags wird eine Möglichkeit aufgezeigt, in Diagrammen Beschriftungen einzufügen sowie grafische Darstellungen mit Bemaßungen unmittelbar in Mathcad zu erzeugen. Anhand mehrerer Beispiele werden die Funktionen erläutert und deren Anwendung live demonstriert.

In these theses are pepresented the Voronoi diagram and Network Voronoi diagram. The shortest path Dijkstra’s algorithm was modified in this way that calculates shortest paths from several Voronoi generators at the same time. The first result - partition of the nodes of the network. The seond result - arcs of the network are attributed to the generators, considering especially their direction and asymmetric costs. Applications allow compare Network Voronoi diagrams to Voronoi diagrams. For this puspose we modified Fortune algorithm. We made particular product for Taxi depot. This Master’s thesis analyze application of information technology in education process, examination using testing method and possibility of computerized testing systems in Lithuanian schools. Rapid development of information and communication technologies inevitably affect and change all spheres of the society including education. Moreover, new technologies change and enrich ordinary methods of examination. One of the most important tasks of the education system is to ascertain the level of knowledge acquired or in other words to examine pupils knowledge. So, one of most easily computerized examination forms is testing method. This method has its own shortcomings, but is rather widespread due to its convenience and easy formalization. A new general standard of computer literacy was prepared on 31st January 2002. Its aim is to ascertain the minimum skills of computer usage by pupils. This year the first school leavers well pass the test on computer literacy. The purpose of the test is to examine their knowledge of information technologies and the mastering level of minimum skills of computer usage. Questionnaire of the teachers and pupils shows that testing method is acceptable and the computer in classes is awaited. The aim of the master’s research is to analyze the efficiency of special computer programmers in developing and examining skills of computer literacy in secondary schools. AbstractUsing appropriate diagrams is generally considered efficacious in communication. However, although diagrams are extensively used in printed and digital media, people in general rarely construct diagrams to use in common everyday communication. Furthermore, instruction on diagram use for communicative purposes is uncommon in formal education and, when students are required to communicate what they have learned, the usual expectation is they will use words – not diagrams. Requiring diagram inclusion in essays, for example, would be almost unheard of. Consequently, current understanding about student capabilities in this area is very limited. The aim of this study therefore was to contribute to addressing this gap: it comprised a qualitative exploration of 12 undergraduate students’ diagram use in two essays (in which they were asked to include at least one diagram). Analysis focused on identifying the kinds of diagrams produced, and the effectiveness with which those diagrams were used. Useful functions that the diagrams served included clarification, summarization, integration of points, and provision of additional information and/or perspectives in visual form. However, there were also redundancies, as well as unclear, schematically erroneous, and overly complicated representations in some of the diagrams that the students constructed. These findings are discussed in terms of needs, opportunities, and challenges in instructional provision.

AbstractIn this work, we propose a formal, computational model of the sense-making of diagrams by using the theories of image schemas and conceptual blending, stemming from cognitive linguistics. We illustrate our model here for the case of a Hasse diagram, using typed first-order logic to formalise the image schemas and to represent the geometry of a diagram. The latter additionally requires the use of some qualitative spatial reasoning formalisms. We show that, by blending image schemas with the geometrical configuration of a diagram, we can formally describe the way our cognition structures the understanding of, and the reasoning with, diagrams. In addition to a theoretical interest for diagrammatic reasoning, we also briefly discuss the cognitive underpinnings of good practice in diagram design, which are important for fields such as human-computer interaction and data visualization.

AbstractIt is generally considered beneficial for learners to construct and use appropriate diagrams when solving mathematical word problems. However, previous research has indicated that learners tend not to use diagrams spontaneously. In the present study, we analyzed textbooks in Japan and Canada, focusing on the possibility that such inadequacy in diagram use may be affected by the presence (or absence) of diagrams in textbooks, the kinds of diagrams that are included, and whether problems requiring the construction of diagrams are provided in those textbooks. One set each of Japanese and Canadian elementary school textbooks were analyzed, focusing on the chapters dealing with division. Results revealed that the Japanese textbooks contain worked examples and exercise problems accompanied by diagrams more than the Canadian textbooks. Furthermore, the Japanese textbooks often use line diagrams and tables that abstractly represent quantitative relationships and they include more problems that require students to use diagrams. However, to encourage students to use diagrams spontaneously, it may be necessary to include problems that scaffold the use of diagrams in a step-by-step manner in both the Canadian and the Japanese textbooks.

AbstractAs the use and diversity of diagrams across many disciplines grows, there is an increasing interest in the diagrams research community concerning how such diversity might be documented and explained. In this article, we argue that one way of achieving increased reliability, coverage, and utility for a general classification of diagrams is to draw on recently developed semiotic principles developed within the field of multimodality. To this end, we sketch out the internal details of what may tentatively be termed the diagrammatic semiotic mode. This provides a natural account of how diagrammatic representations organising lines of research integrate natural language, various forms of graphics, diagrammatic elements such as arrows, lines and other expressive resources into coherent organisations, while still respecting the crucial diagrammatic contributions of visual organisation. We illustrate the proposed approach using two recent diagram corpora and show how a multimodal approach supports the empirical analysis of diagrammatic representations, especially in identifying diagrammatic constituents and describing their interrelations in a manner that may be generalised across diagram types and be used to characterise distinct kinds of functionality.

AbstractPrevious studies have shown that diagram use is effective in mathematical word problem solving. However, they have also revealed that students manifest many problems in using diagrams for such purposes. A possible reason is an inadequacy in students’ understanding of variations in types of problems and the corresponding kinds of diagrams appropriate to use. In the present study, a preliminary investigation was undertaken of how such correspondences between problem types and kinds of diagrams are represented in textbooks. One government-approved textbook series for elementary school level in Japan was examined for the types of mathematical word problems, and the kinds of diagrams presented with those problems. The analyses revealed significant differences in association between kinds of diagrams and types of problems. More concrete diagrams were included with problems involving change, combination, variation, and visualization of quantities; while number lines were more often used with comparison and variation problems. Tables and graphs corresponded to problems requiring organization of quantities; and more concrete diagrams and graphs to problems involving quantity visualization. These findings are considered in relation to the crucial role of textbooks and other teaching materials in facilitating strategy knowledge acquisition in students.

AbstractIn this study, we investigated 32 undergraduate university students’ use of diagrams in planning to write two coursework reports. For both reports, the students were asked to submit a diagrammatic plan for what they were going to write. Prior to their first plan, no instruction was provided about how to use diagrams for planning. However, prior to the second plan, the students were provided instruction on the use of sketchnoting, which is one method for creating visual notes and organizing ideas. For the first plan, only 31% actually submitted a diagram plan, with the majority submitting a text-based plan. However, for the second plan, the proportion who submitted a diagram plan increased to 66%, but they also reported experiencing more difficulty in creating their plans compared to those who submitted text-based plans. The students’ plans and reports were scored for various quality features, analysis of which revealed that, for the second report, diagram plans had a better logical structure than text plans. More importantly, second reports created with diagram plans were also found to have a better logical structure than those created with text plans. The findings indicate that many students require instruction to be able to create diagrammatic plans, but that creating such plans can be helpful in structuring their written work.

AbstractThe literature on diagrammatic reasoning includes theoretical and experimental work on the effectiveness of diagrams for conveying information. One influential theoretical contribution to this field proposes that a notation that is more effective than another would have an observational advantage over it; that is, it would make certain pieces of information observable—by means of some visual, meaning-carrying relationships—that were not observable in the other. Although the notion of observational advantage captures a relevant aspect of the benefit of using one notation over another, we present here an example where this notion is not sufficient to distinguish between a more and a less effective diagram. We suggest to take the theory of observational advantage one step further by linking it to cognitive theories of human conceptualisation and reasoning. Following our previous work, we propose that the act of observing facts about set theory from the geometry of a diagram can be modeled as a conceptual blend of image schemas with parts of the geometric configuration of a diagram. Image schemas are elementary mental structures that crystallize early embodied experiences, allowing agents to make sense of what they perceive by conceptualising it in terms of these structures (e.g., container, link, scale etc.). With our approach, we can extend the theory of observational advantage to take into account the cognitive complexity of the act of observation. Concretely, we present an example of an Euler and a Hasse diagram, and we posit that, while their observational advantage is equivalent, the Hasse diagram requires a much more complex network of conceptual blends to model certain observations made from it. Thus, to reason about certain set-theoretic claims, a Hasse diagram is less cognitively effective than an Euler diagram with equivalent observational advantage. We believe our approach contributes to the theoretical discussion on what factors affect the effectiveness of a diagram, and provides new avenues for the exploration of how the embodied experiences of the users contribute to the way they reason with diagrams.

Resumen: El proceso de diseño para el CCVA comienza con dos frases que escribe Le Corbusier durante su primera visita al sitio en 1959. Sólo cinco meses después hace los primeros dibujos. De ahí la relación de este edificio con la sintaxis, si ésta se entiende como la búsqueda del orden y de la relación de los espacios. La sintaxis se observa aquí desde las primeras imágenes literarias hasta el nivel de definición de la forma, en el que se usan maquetas esquemáticas y desarmables, así como recortes de las áreas requeridas por el programa, con los que se experimenta de diversas maneras en un plano del sitio. Además de su interés persistente por diversos tipos de circulación, esta metodología emparenta al edificio con algunos proyectos de Le Corbusier donde también hace uso de los diagramas funcionales, o "diagrammes à bulles", como él los llama. El mismo tipo de diagrama fue usado más tarde por Bill Hillier en un método para analizar la arquitectura que llamó la "sintaxis espacial". Este método, además de analizar el orden y la relación de los espacios, permite entender su permeabilidad con el espacio público. Al ser un edificio atravesado por una ruta pública, y al iniciarse con imágenes literarias, se hace pertinente verlo a través de su sintaxis espacial. Abstract: The design process for the CCVA begins with two phrases that Le Corbusier writes during his first visit to the site in 1959. Only five months later the first drawings appear. Hence the relationship of the building with the syntax, if this is understood as the search for the order and the relationships in space. The syntax is observed here from the first literary images up to the definition of the form, in which schematic architectural models are used, but also cut-out areas required by the program, which are disposed in different ways on a site plan. In addition to his persistent interest in various types of movement, this methodology can also be seen in other projects where Le Corbusier also makes use of functional diagrams, or as he calls them: "diagrammes à bulles ". The same kind of diagram was used later by Bill Hillier in a method for analyzing architecture that he called the "space syntax". This method, in addition to analyzing the order and the relationship of spaces, can help to understand their permeability with respect to public space. As a building crossed by a public path, and as design process that starts with literary images, it becomes relevant to see it through its spatial syntax. Diagram visual grounding aims to capture the correlation between language expression and local objects in the diagram, and plays an important role in the applications like textbook question answering and cross-modal retrieval. Most diagrams consist of several colors and simple geometries. This results in sparse low-level visual features, which further aggravates the gap between low-level visual and high-level semantic features of diagrams. The phenomenon brings challenges to the diagram visual grounding. To solve the above issues, we propose a gestalt-perceptual attention model to align the diagram objects and language expressions. For low-level visual features, inspired by the gestalt that simulates human visual system, we build a gestalt-perception graph network to make up the features learned by the traditional backbone network. For high-level semantic features, we design a multi-modal context attention mechanism to facilitate the interaction between diagrams and language expressions, so as to enhance the semantics of diagrams. Finally, guided by diagram features and linguistic embedding, the target query is gradually decoded to generate the coordinates of the referred object. By conducting comprehensive experiments on diagrams and natural images, we demonstrate that the proposed model achieves superior performance over the competitors. The UML (Unified Modeling Language) has been widely accepted as a standard language for object-oriented analysis and design. Among the UML diagrams, one of the most difficult and time-consuming diagrams to develop is the object interaction diagram (OID), which is rendered as either a sequence diagram or a collaboration diagram. Our experience shows that developers have significant trouble in understanding and developing OIDs. In this paper, we present an effective heuristic for developing interaction diagrams and illustrate the technique with a case study. We found that students effectively developed OIDs using this heuristic method.

Most of the previous research in the field of power-split hybrid electric vehicles focused on the powertrain topology optimization. However, depicting a given or found topology in the form of schematic diagram, required for the advanced steps of vehicles’ design, has not yet been studied. In this paper, we propose a systematic approach to automatically generate all feasible stick diagrams for all twelve split-hybrid powertrain topologies with a single planetary gear (PG). The stick diagram is a simplified cartoon layout that schematically illustrates the connections, arrangements, and positions of the powertrain components. The proposed process is divided into three steps. First, we introduce the placement diagram, which specifies the position of the components with respect to the planetary gear. Secondly, for each placement diagrams, all positioning diagrams are generated where the relative location of each component is determined. The use of positioning diagrams guarantees dealing with all the possible arrangements. Lastly, the feasible stick diagrams are selected by filtering out infeasible ones from the entire pool of candidate stick diagrams using a set of feasibility rules. The proposed method is used for several topologies, such as Toyota Prius and GM Volt, and it is found that the patented stick diagrams are a subset of all the feasible stick diagrams. Therefore, one can systematically generate all the feasible stick diagrams for any given single PG powertrain topology using the proposed design methodology.

Abstract Comparison of various methods for analyzing characteristic features of a total system is demonstrated. Process flow diagram (PFD) shows streams and main apparatuses schematically. Hence we can imagine system configuration. However, it gives no quantitative information. Energy flow and exergy flow diagrams, respectively, show information about the first law and the second law of thermodynamics. The advantages of these diagrams disappear for a large and complex system. Then we propose a new diagram, a process flow diagram with process vectors. Base frame of this diagram is the same of the PFD, but information about H and ε of important streams and ΔH and Δε for each change of substances is represented by drawing process vectors. And features of exergy loss are clearly depicted by their combination.

In this paper, a novel approach is proposed to transform a requirement text described by natural language into two UML diagrams — use case and class diagrams. The transformation consists of two steps: from natural language to an intermediate graphic language called recursive object model (ROM) and from ROM to UML. The ROM diagram corresponding to a text includes the main semantic information implied in the text by modeling the relations between words in a text. Based on the semantics in the ROM diagram, a set of generation rules are proposed to generate UML diagrams from a ROM diagram. A software prototype R2U is presented as a proof of concept for this approach. A case study shows that the proposed approach is feasible. The proposed approach can be applied to requirements modeling in various engineering fields such as software engineering, automotive engineering, and aerospace engineering. The future work is pointed out at the end of this paper.

Abstract Any offshore structure requires engineering feasibility and fatigue study during the design and/or maintenance process. The studies mentioned above require an understanding of wave loading on the structure. Most wave loading studies consider wave scatter diagrams. However, the probability of wave occurrence depicted on wave scatter diagram change over region, season and period. Hence, the study based on any static wave diagram doesn’t reflect the probability of wave occurrence for a required region. Further, these waves scatter diagrams are not readily available for the specific local region of interest. Hence, in this study, an algorithm is developed to make a wave scatter diagram using hindcast Australian Meteorological data for a local region for a particular season or period of time. The data has 0.4 × 0.4 degrees spatial and one-hour temporal resolution and contain mean, wind and swell sea state; hence enables to make wave scatter diagram for mean, wind and swell sea for any offshore application. The advantage of the proposed hindcast wave scatter diagram includes flexibility and ease of customising wave scatter for any region, season or period of time compared to available sea area-specific wave scatter diagram. Also, the hindcast model is very well tested and updated regularly and hence wave scatter diagram is developed based on recently validated data. Since these data are free, making a more reliable and accurate wave scatter diagram is free. Additionally, in this study, the graphical comparison of the hindcast wave diagram with two additional sources for the North Atlantic wave and Australian water is provided for validation. The graphical comparison shows the differences and similarities of the wave scatter diagrams over different regions, seasons and periods.

The use of a polar diagram method for describing and evaluating the machinability of Inconel 718 was explored. Five key parameters of the work material, representing the mechanical and physical properties which have strongest influence on its machinability, were employed in the diagrams. These five parameters were integrated into a single polar diagram, used to describe the machinability of Inconel 718. Variations in the machinability of Inconel 718 products or components of a given type produced in different batches were analyzed. Industrial experiments were conducted to test the relationship between the polar diagram of the work material, its carbon content, and tool wear of the ceramic cutting tools used in machining it. Work materials of Inconel 718 in which the polar diagrams of machinability were similar in size and shape exhibited very similar behavior during the cutting process. The polar diagram method employed appeared to be useful for selecting suitable cutting data for the machining of new materials.

Abstract Article presents continuous forms of S-N and Mean Stress Diagrams for fatigue design of machine and structural components against breakage; and offers data verifying the proposed forms of the diagrams. Two forms of constructing the mean stress diagram — one for the test specimen, one for the critical section of the machine component — are offered. Defects in using conventional forms of the diagrams are removed. Discussions upgrading fatigue strength reduction factors are included. Computer-aided fatigue design applications are discussed. Determining remaining life considering cumulative damage effect using the offered forms of design diagrams is also included. Application examples are given.

One of the main aspects of studying databases in higher education institutions by future IT specialists is database design and software product development. This, in turn, is the most important problem of the developer’s interaction with the customer. To facilitate the process of database design, ER-diagrams are used, which are based on the concepts of “Entity” and “Relationship”. An ER diagram allows you to present a database in the form of visual graphical objects that define a specific subject area. The article considers the available cloud services for the construction of ER-diagrams for learning databases of future IT specialists and their selection the method expert evaluation. For this purpose, the criteria and indicators for the selection of cloud services for the construction of ER-diagrams of databases by future information technology specialists have been determined. As a result, it was found that the cloud services Dbdesigner.net and Lucidchart are the most convenient to learn. It is determined that for a teacher of a higher education institution the use of cloud services is an opportunity to use licensed software in education without additional costs.

This report describes one of the several tests performed on mine hydraulic fluids in accordance with CSA standard M423 187. Emphasis is placed on the sequence of operations and safety procedures necessary while carrying out the spray ignition test. The test is intended to determine the fire-resistance of several types of hydraulic fluids used in mining machinery. Schematic diagrams of the test facility, equipment, and a circuit diagram of the related instrumentation are presented at the conclusion, along with samples of test recording sheets.
