Résumé :
From the information obtained in DFT, in particular the magnetic moments and the Heisenberg exchange parameters, one has the possibility to make a connection to atomistic spin-dynamics. In this chapter the essential features of this connection is described. It is also discussed under what length and time-scales that this approach is a relevant approximation. The master equation of atomistic spin-dynamics is derived, and discussed in detail. In addition we give examples of how this equation describes the magnetization dynamics of a few model systems.

Résumé :
Symmetries play an important role in the theory of the solid state. As will be developed in this Chapter, DFT calculations for crystalline materials are commonly performed for the irreducible part of the first Brillouin zone, an approach which relies on the use of translational and point group symmetries. Two central properties that result from a calculation in reciprocal space are the wave vector resolved energy spectra, the so called band structure, and the energy resolved density of states. For magnetic materials, atomic magnetic moment moments can be defined and calculated, as well as effective inter-atomic exchange interactions.

Résumé :
Developmental music therapy (DMT) is a model that underpins music therapy practice with multiple client groups. The resonances of DMT can be found whenever music therapists use any or all of their understanding of developmental stages, family context, and social and cultural frameworks to consider needs and interactions within individual or group music therapy. Music therapy training courses teach developmental theories, and therefore most practising music therapists use these theoretical perspectives in their interactions with clients. Thus chapter will show how developmental music therapy refers to three major theoretical orientations: (1) Theories of stress, coping, and adaption; (2) Human life span development, including stage models of development, and musical milestones of development; and (3) Ecological perspectives such as Bronfenbrenner’s bioecological model of development (Bronfenbrenner 1979). Boxill consistently termed her approach developmental music therapy (Boxill 1989). Therefore, this chapter provides an overview of Boxill’s writings and theoretical positioning within DMT.

Résumé :
The electronic structure of molecules is described, starting from qualitative Molecular Orbital (MO) theory. After the case of simple atoms and molecules, one treats molecular solids and develops the relation between Molecular Orbital theory and band theory. In both cases, one shows that the electronic structure can influence the geometrical structure, through Jahn–Teller effects or Peierls distortion. The effect of interelectronic repulsion, the central problem of Quantum Chemistry, is put in perspective by a synthetic presentation of different approaches: Hartree–Fock Self-Consistent Field with treatment of electron correlation, Valence Bond models, and finally Density Functional Theory methods (DFT). The last section is devoted to quantum tunnelling and its dynamical aspects.

Résumé :
Violence perpetrated by persons with serious mental illness (SMI), although certainly not the norm among this group, is of clinical and legal import in numerous legal settings. Among these are civil commitment, forensic psychiatry (insanity acquittees), and the criminal justice system. In this chapter, we provide a critical review of interventions and their empirical support that are used to reduce violence among persons with SMI. Promising findings support the use of cognitive behavioral, social learning, and cognitive skills approaches that are consistent with the Risk-Need-Responsivity (RNR) approach to crime and violence prevention. Anger management remains a promising, focused intervention with reasonable support in the literature. Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) has substantial general support. Community-based mandatory service programs such as outpatient commitment and mental health courts appear effective. Finally, the evidence base for the violence-reducing effect of certain psychotropic medication, particularly clozapine, is promising yet inconsistent.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter presents what is currently known about the comorbidity of substance use disorders (SUDs) and borderline personality disorder (BPD), outlines the ways in which substance use and SUDs have a unique clinical presentation within the context of BPD, and describes how the distinct features of SUDs in BPD inform conceptualization and the treatment approach. The high comorbidity of SUD in individuals diagnosed with BPD adds to the complexity of clinical presentation, symptom severity, and obstacles to treatment engagement and effectiveness. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), when modified for individuals with BPD, can be effective. This chapter reviews the increased risks, challenges, and obstacles to treatment presented by SUD-BPD comorbidity and describes efforts to adapt DBT to this population that have resulted in new interventions for treatment engagement, behavioral goal setting, and expansion of the standard frame of conducting psychotherapy that more directly target the specific challenges of treating SUD-BPD.

Résumé :
The difficult airway invariably presents itself to all airway managers and is mostly unpredictable in the context of rapid response team (RRT) calls. A multiprofessional difficult airway team (DAT) that could be called for airway emergencies is likely to reduce complications and death. The DAT is organized with predefined roles for each member so that rapid intervention occurs during the emergency. Priority is given to oxygenation throughout the airway response. The anticipated and unanticipated difficult airways should be approached differently and often require medication adjuncts that should be carefully chosen. Airway devices such as the video laryngoscope and the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) have dramatically improved the ability to secure an airway quickly. Finally, it is important to recognize when a surgical airway is needed in the setting of the RRT calls.

Résumé :
Persons with HIV have multifactorial and multidimensional sources of distress. Distress has a profoundly negative impact on persons with HIV and their loved ones. While the term distress is more acceptable to patients and does not carry with it the stigma of a specific psychiatric diagnostic disorder, the anguish and suffering associated are still painful. This chapter explores the sources for distress utilizing a comprehensive biopsychosocial approach and presents ways to recognize distress. Related tools in assessing HIV-related distress include the Distress Thermometer (DT), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and HIV Symptom Distress Scale (SDS). An overview of the symptoms and illnesses associated with distress include biological, psychological, and social aspects including HIV stigma. Evidence-based approaches to alleviate distress in persons with HIV/AIDS are also presented in the chapter.

Résumé :
Many adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) experience mental health conditions, including anxiety and depression. A range of short- to medium-term psychological therapies have shown promise, although research is limited for most comorbid conditions. The first of its kind, Psychological Therapies for Adults with Autism is an edited volume with contributions from an internationally recognized group of clinical experts. Service-user voices are viewed as central to the book, and the second chapter documents adults’ with ASD and parents’ experiences of, and thoughts about, engaging in psychological therapy. Subsequent chapters follow a similar format, presenting an overview of the psychological therapy covered, the main strategies used, and the research evidence regarding its use in individuals with ASD. This is followed by a case vignette linking theory to practice and outlining extensive examples of adaptations to enhance the accessibility and acceptability of interventions. Psychological therapies covered include transition-focused approaches, education- and employment-focused approaches, systemic therapy, social skills interventions, positive behavior support (PBS), mindfulness-based interventions, cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), schema therapy, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), compassion-focused therapy (CFT), group interventions, and offender-focused interventions. Reflecting the fact that adults can benefit from a multidisciplinary approach, one chapter focuses on pharmacological interventions. The concluding chapter outlines considerations for developing effective psychological therapies services for adults with ASD.

Résumé :
Environmental ethics, as a field of philosophical study, began in the 1970s and 1980s, in part as a result of the environmental movement and largely in Anglo-American work. Its roots trace to the monumental technological discoveries of the twentieth century, such as nuclear power and chemical pesticides; their overuse or misuse; and recognition of the environmental degradation these technologies have caused. Two paradigm examples of how the misuse of technology has caused massive environmental damage and consequently raised new ethical questions are DDT and nuclear power. From the point of view of the relative importance of human interests, the new field of environmental ethics can be divided roughly into anthropocentric, non-anthropocentric, and mixed approaches.

Résumé :
The Metaphysics of Notation (2008) is a 72-foot-wide, hand-drawn pictographic score divided into twelve continuous panels.1 It is accompanied by no instruction regarding its interpretation. The work aspires to elicit a musical response from a performer, but despite its profusion of concrete, detailed glyphs it advocates nothing specific about the nature of their aural realization. Furthermore, I heard no sound in my head while composing the piece. This is a radical departure from the approach to composition I was taught, in which the composer’s job is to imagine—preferably with exacting resolution—a sound object, and then, through the deft application of the most relevant notation (whether traditional or invented—but if the latter, surely a defined one) to produce a specification from which a performer (burdened or invigorated by a marginal or essential role as interpreter) can realize this imagined sound....

Résumé :
This article examines the spin and charge properties of double and triple quantum dots (QDs) populated containing just a few electrons, with particular emphasis on laterally coupled QDs. It first describes the theoretical approach, known as exact diagonalization method, utilized on the example of the two-electron system in coupled QDs that are modelled as two parabolas. The many-body problem is solved via the exact diagonalization method as well as variational Heitler–London and Monte Carlo methods. The article proceeds by considering the general characteristics of the two-electron double-QD structure and limitations of the approximate methods commonly used for its theoretical description. It also discusses the stability diagram for two circular dots and investigates how its features are affected by the QD elliptical deformations. Finally, it assesses the behavior of the two-electron system in the realistic double-dot confinement potentials.

Résumé :
In our times of globalisation, an effective employment law that transcends national borders is of great public interest. In a project funded by the DFG (Germany’s central research funding organisation), the potential of transnational social dialogues in Europe to shape society innovatively was examined. To this end, 2500 agreements of European works councils and social dialogues according to the TFEU that are either specific to one industry or relate to a number of sectors, transnational company agreements and multi-actor agreements were collected, coded and comparatively assessed. Social dialogues have brought about innovations in employment law and/or have concretised abstract norms in the context of industry, as this study proves in the areas of health and safety, information and consultation, anti-discrimination rights and compatibility with European legal regulations. However, this study finds that in order for transnational social dialogues to have a sustainable effect in their approach to setting standards, they require more legal support on both a national and European level.

Résumé :
How should India’s rise be understood in the framework of international relations and a changing global order? This chapter assesses India’s jostle for an advantageous position on the world stage through three sets of lenses: the attempt to voice the civilizational values of a nascent nation; the expressions of the economic and developmental needs of a poor citizenry; and the self-professed aims and pursuits of the interests of a sovereign state. It then outlines some of the challenges in defining India’s international position, and explores possible means through which these can be navigated. In order to optimize the rewards of India’s interactions with the global order, deft management of all three approaches is necessary, enabled by a recognition of the fact that its greatest strength lies in the ability to articulate a democratically validated foreign policy.

Résumé :
This article focuses on flexible Bayes regression of epidemiologic data involving pregnancy outcomes. It first provides an overview of finite mixture models and nonparametric Bayes methods before discussing some of the possibilities focusing on gestational age at delivery, DDE and age data from the Longnecker et al. (2001) study. More specifically, it examines how risk of premature delivery is impacted by maternal exposure to the pesticide DDT. The results showcase the use of Bayesian analysis in epidemiological studies that collect continuous health outcomes data, and in which the scientific and clinical interest typically focuses on the relationships between exposures and risks of an abnormal response, corresponding to an observation in the tails of the distribution. The article also highlights the limitations of current standard approaches that can be overcome by means of Bayesian analysis using density regression, mixtures and nonparametric models, as developed and applied in this pregnancy outcome study.

Résumé :
Many different kinds of group or individual psychotherapeutic interventions, applied to the special needs of patients with ADHD, already exist (e.g. cognitive–behavioural therapy [CBT], coaching, problem-focused therapy, meta-cognitive training, mindfulness-based interventions, psychoeducation, and dialectical behaviour therapy [DBT]-based cognitive therapy). Most of these treatments are behaviourally orientated, and are predominantly modularly structured. CBT has been investigated most frequently and is regarded as the most effective psychological treatment option. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidelines recommend CBT as appropriate for adolescents with moderate impairments and for adults, i.e. if drug treatment has proved to be only partially effective or ineffective. Interventions treating adolescents with ADHD are frequently based on CBT principles, behavioural therapy approaches, and cognitive and social skills training techniques addressing the patient, parents, or teachers. Unfortunately, interventions for adolescents have been investigated on a comparatively limited scale.

Résumé :
Researchers, program administrators, and practicing clinicians explain the most recent developments in using psychedelic substances to treat psychological, physiological, and social problems. More than a decade ago, the U.S. government lifted its ban on all testing of psychedelic substances. Winkelman and Sessa now provide updated scientific research and applications of these substances, now moving into approved categories of medicine. The text is an up-to-date assessment of the latest advances in the field of psychedelic medicine, covering the use of LSD, psilocybin, MDMA, ayahuasca, and other substances to augment psychotherapies for a range of disorders. It discusses medical and psychiatric concerns, clinical efficacy and safety, ethical considerations, and neuroscience findings regarding the psychedelic compounds. Topics covered include an overview of psychiatric applications of psychedelics; treatments for addictions and depressive disorders; effects of psychedelics on inflammation and neuroplasticity; evidence for clinical applications of DMT, ayahuasca, and cannabidiol; psychedelic treatment of sociopathic disorders; microdosing psychedelics; training psychedelic therapists; and community-based harm reduction approaches to managing psychedelic crises.

Résumé :
Abstract A historical account of the period 2001–2020 is presented by focusing on the shifting connotations of certain political catchphrases and words. These allow for a linked-up narrative covering areas such as politics and policy, business and investing, austerity and inequality, identity, climate change, crowd protests, flexible working, and online education. Key junctures are 9/11, the 2002 dot-com crash and the 2007–2008 financial crisis, the Occupy movements of 2011–2012, China’s economic policy from 2014 onwards, and the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020. Half the book is devoted to the unusually pervasive usage of the catchphrase ‘new normal’. Chapters are also given to ‘we are the 99%’ and the catchwords ‘austerity’ and ‘resilience’. Case studies of these catchphrases and words occupy much of the book. The final chapter makes conceptual inferences and proposes both a theory of political catchphrases and a distinctive approach to contemporary history. The source materials are predominantly from the UK and USA, but refer, naturally, to issues of global moment. The book would be of particular interest to students and researchers in politics and policy studies, contemporary social history, cultural studies and sociology, discourse analysis, and media studies. While following an academic format, it is written in an accessible style and would appeal to all who are alive to the momentous developments that are unfolding at present.

Résumé :
This chapter describes the different modalities for assessment of systolic function by transthoracic echocardiography. Firstly, the basic principles of physiology and the determinants of left ventricular (LV) performance are considered, followed by a systematic appraisal of the methodologies for global LV systolic function assessment. Starting with M-mode echocardiography, passing through the traditional two-dimensional echocardiography evaluation to three-dimensional echocardiography approaches, main strengths and limitations are described. Power Doppler usefulness, regarding stroke volume calculations and dP/dt measurement are summarily explained, taking into consideration the usual pitfalls found in daily practice. There is a section dedicated to regional systolic function evaluation, with the recommendations for standardized LV division and differential characteristics of wall motion abnormalities. Additionally, more recent approaches with tissue Doppler imaging and strain analyses for global and regional LV function assessment are described. Finally, a section is dedicated to right ventricle systolic function which describes all modalities of evaluation.
