In her 1983 book, Semiotik des Theaters, Erika Fischer-Lichte referred to theatre as part of ‘die Geometrie der Kultur’, a network of relationships materialized in space that symbolizes cultural experience. The concept of the geometry of culture may enable us to show how, in an urban space, different strands of human activities find their expression in the outline of urban space. Lewis Mumford demonstrates in The City in History that political programmes, economic interests, and cultural concepts influence the city's organization as well as the functions which individual buildings take in the urban environment. Cultural historians and semioticians such as Mary Henderson, Monika Steinhauser, Michael Hays, and Marvin Carlson have adopted this perspective for their investigations of the history of theatre in various metropolitan areas. For example, Henderson studies the relationship between the theatres and the financial district in New York City; Michael Hays and Monika Steinhauser analyse particular urban monuments, such as the Lincoln Center in New York and the Paris Opera. Marvin Carlson analyses how theatre buildings have been integrated historically as public monuments in various urban settings. Within the context of such studies I will examine the spatial and aesthetic re-alignments that World War II forced upon the integration of theatre buildings in Berlin, taking as case studies four major theatres: the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm, the Deutsches Theater, the Schillertheater and the Volksbühne.

Heiner Müller directed Shakespeare's Hamlet together with his own The Hamletmachine as Hamlet/Machine in March 1990 at the Deutsches Theater, East Berlin. This article investigates the production's conception, its rehearsal and its execution against the backdrop of the fall of the Wall. Müller, a playwright whose dramaturgies actively resist reductive interpretation, sought to put Hamlet/Machine beyond the reach of an allegorical reading. Strategies in acting, staging and design were adopted to frustrate the ease with which Hamlet could have merely illustrated the historical changes taking place outside the theatre. On the other hand, Müller was also making theatre for his fellow GDR citizens and had to take account of their experiences, too. His political theatre relied on the combination of contradictory signs in performance that would activate the audience, forcing a confrontation with the material on stage on its own terms. Such an aspiration was, almost inevitably, revealed as utopian but was in Müller's view the only way for the theatre to challenge its immediate historical context.

Born in 1846, Franz Mehring as a young man was a follower of Ferdinand Lassalle, who in 1863 had organized Germany's first socialist party. As well as establishing a reputation as a journalist with his contributions to many liberal and democratic newspapers, Mehring was awarded his doctorate at Leipzig University in 1881 for his dissertation on the history and teachings of German social democracy. In his mid-forties he embraced Marxism and in 1891 joined the German Social Democratic Party, soon emerging as the intellectual leader of its left wing. He became editor of the Leipziger Volkszeitung and wrote prolifically for Die Neue Zeit and other radical journals on history, politics, philosophy, and literature. His book The Lessing Legend, published in 1893, is regarded as the first sustained attempt at Marxist literary criticism. His major biography of Karl Marx appeared in 1918, the year before his death. Completed in 1891, The Weavers was accepted for performance by the Deutsches Theater but was rejected by the Berlin censor as ‘a portrayal which specifically instils class hatred’. The first production of the play, discussed by Mehring below, was possible only because the Freie Bühne was a subscription society. In October 1893 a further private performance was given at the Neue Freie Volksbühne, followed by seven more in December at the Freie Volksbühne, where Franz Mehring was chairman. By now, the Prussian State censor had overruled his Berlin subordinate and The Weavers received its public premiere at the Deutsches Theater on 25 September 1894. On each occasion Hauptmann's play was greeted with great enthusiasm by the public, but found no favour with the Imperial family who indignantly cancelled their regular box at the Deutsches Theater. Subsequently The Weavers was banned from public performance in France, Austria, Italy, and Russia. Mehring's article appeared originally in Die Neue Zeit, XI, No. I (1893). Its translation in NTQ forms part of an occasional series on early Marxist dramatic criticism, which already includes Trotsky on Wedekind (NTQ28) and Lunacharsky on Ibsen (NTQ39). EDWARD BRAUN

ABSTRACTThis article is the first in‐depth study of the ‘Deutsches Theater Liverpool’, probably the most successful non‐English theatre ever on Australian soil, selling out daily performances and mounting a new production each week. The theatre's success was due in large part to its location inside the ‘German Concentration Camp’, the largest First World War (WWI) internment camp in Australia. In contrast to most WWI internment camps around the world, its almost six thousand ‘enemy alien’ internees were a mixture of civilians – most of whom called Australia home before the war – merchant sailors and naval personnel. For this diverse group of men, the theatre was more than entertainment; it was an important way to spend their time meaningfully. We argue that this meaning was strongly connected to the (re)negotiation of identity through theatre, allowing the internees to contribute to the war effort understood at the time in German public discourse as a ‘Kulturkrieg’, a battle for the survival of German culture. Theatre‐makers and audiences (re)engaged with their Germanness through ideas of ‘Kameradschaft’, German diligence and the joint duty of ‘durchhalten’ – ‘making do’. The critical importance of female impersonation in the achievement of the theatre's cultural aims rounds out our analysis of the D.T.L.

German film artist Jan Speckenbach ingeniously contributed to the development of live video on the stage, and this discussion focuses on his education, as well his as experimental collaborations with director Frank Castorf at the Volksbühne Berlin, starting in 2000. Speckenbach’s background in film and media studies facilitated his explorations of uncharted territory in the theatre, going from a set of fixed cameras on the stage to the use of a camera crew with live-editing for augmented images as part of the whole directing concept and process. His first-hand insights into how actors have interacted with this new technology and how filmmaking can be an integral part of the theatre indicate clearly that filmmaking has played an invaluable role in recent theatre history. Speckenbach here also speaks of his collaborations with other directors, notably Sebastian Hartmann and René Pollesch, and about the future perspectives of this technology, which has changed the theatre altogether.Jan Speckenbach studied art history, philosophy, and media in Karlsruhe, Munich, and Paris during the 1990s. At the beginning of the new millennium he participated in the development of video theatre with Frank Castorf and, now a successful filmmaker, he also continues to work in the theatre. His short film Gestern in Eden [Yesterday in Eden] premiered at Cannes in 2008, while the full-length feature film Die Vermissten [The Missing] was shown at the 2012 Berlinale and Freiheit [Freedom] at the 2017 film competition at Locarno. In 2020 he directed the live-stream of Der Zauberberg [The Magic Mountain, after Thomas Mann’s novel] at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin (premiered online in November 2019), which was subsequently invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen. Thomas Irmer is the editor-in-chief of the Berlin-based monthly Theater der Zeit. He has co-edited two books on the work of Frank Castorf – Zehn Jahre Volksbühne Intendanz Frank Castorf (2003) and Castorf (2016). During the last forty years he has authored, among other significant writings, numerous analytical articles and interviews on Castorf’s creative output.

Brecht's epic theater in its artistic diversity includes works that, having received multimedia interpretation, not only do not lose their artistic and aesthetic significance but also enhance it. This refers to B. Brecht's use of photo-epigrams from "Kriegsfibel", which became emblems of war. "Kriegsfibel" is the title of the second part of the great oratorio "Deutsches Miserere", which emerged as a result of Bertolt Brecht's creative collaboration with the composer Paul Dessau. Twenty-nine photo-epigrams formed the basis of the concert, which Brecht called "Deutsches Miserere" – "the great repentance of the German people". In this article, we examine the basic principles of the construction of "Deutsches Miserere", focusing on the functional features of the alienation effect in the work through multimedia and intermedia means. The focus lies on the interconnection and combination of different types of art: fiction, photography, cinematography, and music aimed at creating an original author's language. The article claims that the unifying principle that connects them is chimerism, which contributes to the effect of alienation and serves to provocatively and paradoxically comprehend and embody a certain theme or idea. In the triad of "principle – technique – medium", the leading artistic principle is the effect of alienation, one of the techniques of artistic transformation of reality is chimerism, and the medium is multimedia. The introduction of multimedia amplifies the alienation effect, and this allows us to consider the interaction of chimerism with intermedial means of expression, namely, it makes intramediality the sphere of existence of chimerism.

German and Polish theatre in the initial period of the political transformation.During the first theatre seasons of the nineties, German drama focused on the analysis of the social traumas following the fall of the Berlin Wall, German reunification and perestroika. However, it soon became apparent that the theatre was not able to keep pace with the political changes of the times, and it failed to do justice to their internal complications and discrepancies.The fascination with the new dramatic scenic forms originating in Germany, which could be observed in Poland in the second half of the nineties, had nothing to do with the so-called reunification drama. It more likely resulted from its fiasco and the adoption of new aesthetics and communication methods. The strengthening relation of the German and Polish theatre, i.e. joint festivals, inspired those Polish artists who sought for a new scenic language and transposed the German theatre experience into their own plays in a creative way. The scale of this movement was so extensive that it could be described as a kind of phenomenon in modern art and in relations between Poland and Germany.Das deutsche und das polnische Theater in der Anfangszeit der Systemtransformation.Die politischen Transformationen `89 hatten großen Einfluss auf die Veränderungen in Kunst und Kultur, und zwar nicht nur mit Bezug auf Deutschland und Polen, sondern vielmehr in weiten Teilen Ost- und Mittel-Osteuropas. Die deutsche Dramaturgie konzentrierte sich in den ersten Theatersaisons der 90er Jahre vorwiegend auf die Verarbeitung der aus dem Mauerfall, der Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands sowie der Perestroika resultierenden gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen in Kultur- und Künstlerkreisen wird auch ein traumatischer Zustand betont. Es zeigte sich jedoch schnell, dass das Theater weder mit dem Tempo der politischen Ereignisse mithalten noch ihren inneren Verwicklungen und Widersprüchen gerecht werden konnte. Die in Polen seit Ende der 90er Jahre beobachtete Faszination von neuen dramatisch-schauspielerischen Formen aus Deutschland hatte nichts mit der sogenannten Dramaturgie der Wiedervereinigung zu tun. Sie entstand vielmehr aus deren Misslingen und der Aufnahme einer neuen Ästhetik bzw. neuen Kommunikationsmethoden. Die immer enger werdenden Kontakte zwischen dem deutschen und dem polnischen Theater z. B. über gemeinsame Festivals wurden zur Inspiration für polnische Kunstschaffende, die eine neue szenische Sprache suchten und ihre Erfahrungen mit dem deutschen Theater kreativ in eigene Inszenierungen transponierten. Die Verbreitung dieser Erscheinung war so weitreichend, dass von einem Phänomen in der zeitgenössischen Kunst sowie den künstlerischen Beziehungen zwischen Polen und Deutschland gesprochen werden kann.

Um die Siebtklässler der Deutschen Schule Valdivia in Chile zum Deutschlernen zu motivieren, wurden im Schuljahr 2013 zwei der insgesamt sechs wöchentlichen Deutsch als Fremdsprache (DaF)-Stunden erstmalig als Theaterkurs angeboten. Ziel des Pilotprojektes war es, die mündliche Kommunikation der Schülerinnen und Schüler1 zu verbessern und gleichzeitig ihre kreativen Ausdruckfähigkeiten zu fördern. Alle Schüler der Jahrgangsstufe erhielten so die Möglichkeit, Deutsch auf eine kreative Art zu lernen und vor allem in der Praxis anzuwenden. Im ersten Schulhalbjahr wurden zunächst viele verschiedene Bereiche des Theaters spielerisch thematisiert. Der Theaterunterricht aller drei Lerngruppen fand natürlich auf Deutsch statt, so dass einerseits das Hörverständnis der Schüler gefördert wurde, andererseits durch die eigenständige Entwicklung der späteren Dialoge für eine Aufführung die Sprachpraxis geübt wurde. Als Thema wurde das Märchen von Schneewittchen gewählt, welches von den drei Gruppen verfremdet werden sollte. So entstanden drei kurze, moderne Versionen auf Deutsch. Eine vierte Version wurde von der spanischsprachigen Theater-AG entwickelt. Die beiden Theaterlehrer führten als Jakob und Wilhelm Grimm durch den Abend und bereiteten das nicht-deutschsprachige Publikum bilingual auf Spanisch und Deutsch auf die Handlung vor. Der Erfolg des Pilotprojekts führte dazu, dass Theater im DaF-Unterricht an der Schule fest im Curriculum verankert wurde. Im Artikel wird erläutert, wie auch an anderen Schulen nach ähnlichem Schema, Theater im DaF-Unterricht die mündliche Kommunikation fördern und stärken kann.

Strindberg’s Dramas on German Stages
This article provides an overview of stage productions of Strindberg’s plays on German stages from 1890 to 2011, and discusses their importance for German directors. The first Strindberg performance to be staged in Germany was Otto Brahm’s The Father produced by the Freie Bühne in Berlin in 1890. The most suitable authors for the naturalistic aesthetic ideals of the Freie Bühne, however, were Hauptmann, Ibsen and Tolstoy. Strindberg was involved in several lawsuits during the 1890’s, making him a controversial figure. However, by the first decade of the 20th century, about twenty-five of his plays were being performed in Germany.
In 1912 the so-called “Strindberg Boom” began; fifty Strindberg dramas were put on stage and the German expressionists even compared Strindberg to Shakespeare. Two theatres were of greater significance than the others. At the Deutsches Theater and the Kammerspiele Max Reinhardt – the first director able to fulfill Strindberg’s dramatic intentions in his late plays – made five legendary productions, beginning with The Dance of Death in 1912. At the Theater in Königgrätzer Straße in 1916, Rudolf Bernauer produced A Dream Play in a more idyllic and less experimental fashion than his contemporary, Reinhardt. By contrast, Reinhardt’s productions utilized lighting, sound effects and a gloomy milieu in order to emphasize the metaphysical anxiety of human beings in a world beyond their comprehension. The importance of the expressionists – and, eventually, of Strindberg himself – decreased after World War I. Given the Nazi party’s dislike of his work, Strindberg’s plays were not performed in Germany at all after 1933.
The first important Strindberg production staged after World War II was Fritz Kortner’s The Father, first performed in Munich in 1949. In the 1950’s the influence of Kafka and Existentialism had revised Strindberg’s image. About ten of his plays had survived, and today, the most frequently performed of these is Miss Julie. During the 1960’s, when the German stage was dominated by political theatre, Strindberg was hardly performed at all. However, in the early 1970’s stage productions of The Dance of Death by Rudolf Noelte and The Ghost Sonata by Hans Neuenfels were the peaks of a new, ephemeral wave of interest in Strindberg.
To this day, the final important German stage director possessed of a pronounced interest in Strindberg was Ernst Wendt. Wendt was, however, strongly criticized by literary scholars and translators for placing emphasis upon the destructive and depressive aspects of Strindberg’s work, and overlooking Strindberg’s role as a radical critic and an inquisitive inventor.

Gaston Salvatore was born in Valparaiso, Chile, in 1941, of an upper middle class Chilean mother and an Italian father. After completing a degree in law, he went to Berlin in 1965, where he studied sociology, and together with Rudi Dutschke became one of the leaders of the student protest movement. He was arrested and obliged to leave Germany in 1969, returning briefly to Chile. In the early ‘seventies he went to Rome, where he worked with Michelangelo Antonioni. One of the results of that collaboration was his novel. Der Kaiser von China, published in 1979. He began his work in German with a cycle of poems, Der langwierige Weg in die Wohnung Natascha Ungeheurs, set to music by Hans Werner Henze, in 1970. His German theatre pieces include Büchners Tod (1972), Fossilien (1975), Freibrief (1977), Tauroggen (1978), Stalin (1985), and Lektionen der Finsternis (1989). A novel, Der Mann mit der Trommel, was published in 1974, and Salvatore's most recent work in that form, Waldemar Müller – ein deutsches Schicksal, appeared in 1982. Gaston Salvatore is co-editor with Hans Magnus Enzensberger of the Trans-Atlantik review, and also writes for Stern, Der Spiegel, and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. He now lives in Venice. The following interview with Salvatore by Alessandro Tinterri, one of the directors of the Actors’ Museum of Genova, took place in Venice in 1989, following two Italian productions of Salvatore's Stalin in a single season – one by the Compagnia del Collettivo di Parma, with Gigi Dall' Aglio and Michele De Marchi, and another by the Teatro di Sardegna, with Raf Vallone. The original German production opened in Berlin, at the Schiller-Theater on 31 October 1987, and was followed by several other productions, including one directed by Salvatore himself at Karlsruhe. In 1988 George Tabori staged the play at the Burgtheater in Vienna, with a woman, Angelica Damrose, in the title role. Alessandro Tinterri sets out in this interview to examine the background to Gaston Salvatore's work and to trace the multi-cultural pathways that have led to his present standing in the European, and especially German, theatre.

The Use of Art Disciplines "Theatre, Music and Songs" in Deutsch lessons
Speaking is considered to be the main element in foreign language teaching. One of the most important methods and techniques of teaching based on drama and theater, So, the integration of theater in Deutsch class practices allows the student to learn about culture and acquire language properly. The theater techniques used in classroom activities reveal the listening and reading and facilitate their acquisition naturally. The success of such an approach is determined by progression and the passage from the easiest to the most difficult task. Thus, only if the dialogues are not too difficult and demanding linguistically, learners can understand them fairly easily. Some scenes and sequences should choose carefully by the teacher to respond to the students’ needs and styles of learners. This type of learning is based on leisure and the courses of Deutsch should fulfill this target. In this article, I address the importance of integrating arts, including theater, music and songs into foreign language lessons and their effectiveness, with a particular emphasis on Deutsch courses.

Die weitgehend aus Steuergeldern geleistete Finanzierung wirft indes immer wieder Fragen nach der gesellschaftlichen Funktion und gesamtkulturellen Bedeutung auf. Diese lassen sich adäquat nur aus einer spezifischen Nationalgeschichte verstehen, in der ästhetische Bildungsideen politische Entwicklungsstrukturen überlagert haben. Die zumal im internationalen Vergleich hohe Qualität des deutschen Kulturtheaters einerseits, seine öffentliche Wahrnehmung andrerseits weisen allerdings einen Mangel an reflexiver Funktionalität auf. Dieses Defizit an kultureller Selbstreflexion scheint selbst ein Inszenierungseffekt der Mediengesellschaft zu sein, in der Theatralität und Realität zunehmend konvergieren.

Johann Friedrich Löwen is generally considered to have written the first history of the German theatre, though scholars rarely discuss his role as a historian and are typically drawn instead to his program for establishing a national theatre. This article will examine his contributions to the historiography of the German theatre in the eighteenth century. His Geschichte des deutschen Theaters represents a substantial break in how German theatre historiography was written and conceptualized, as he favoured an actor-centred narrative instead of a catalogue of plays and playwrights, setting genre trends that would be felt for decades. In a move unexpected for a dedicated reformer of the theatre, however, Löwen depicts the history of German actors in a resoundingly negative light. Such an approach reveals that Löwen views the creation of historical narratives not only as a means for recording the past, but also for attesting to the urgency of theatre reform.

Das Theater spielte eine herausragende Rolle in der nationalsozialistischen Kulturpolitik. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wurde dabei den zahlreichen deutschsprachigen Liebhaber- und Minderheitentheatern in Ostmitteleuropa zuteil, die nach den politischen Veränderungen 1918/19 nunmehr außerhalb der Reichsgrenzen arbeiteten. Viele von ihnen wurden aus Berlin unterstützt, manche nach 1933 sogar direkt subventioniert. Diese Kulturschaffenden, so die offizielle Lesart, waren Beleg dafür, dass weite Teile Ost-, Mittel- und Südeuropas trotz der Veränderungen nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg deutsch geblieben waren, obwohl das die derzeitigen politischen Grenzen nicht widerspiegelten. Das Ziel, diese Autoren und die Gebiete, in denen sie arbeiteten, wieder Deutschland einzugliedern, wurde beispielsweise in den Publikationen Heinz Kindermanns deutlich formuliert. Das steigende Interesse an Literatur, Musik und Theater der deutschen Minderheiten muss daher als Vorgriff auf die militärischen Expansionsbestrebungen des Zweiten Weltkriegs gesehen werden. Umso verwunderlicher mag es daher erscheinen, dass dieses offizielle Interesse nach der eigentlichen Besetzung weiter Teile Ost-, Mittel- und Südeuropas kaum mehr eine Rolle spielte und die deutschen Minderheitentheater anstatt ausgebaut und gefördert, weitgehend verdrängt und durch Berufsensembles ersetzt wurden. Der vorliegende Artikel zeichnet einige der Grundlinien dieser Entwicklung nach, eine Entwicklung, die in der einschlägigen Literatur bisher kaum Beachtung gefunden hat.

Theatre pedagogy in Deutsch teaching/learning at the Algerian university: experience and experiments
It's easy to get the impression that you're playing theatre. Rather, it is the performance of a "cultural product" that is the actual goal of theater work. If that were really the case, the type of theater work and professional theater could only be distinguished from one another in terms of quality, not in terms of their goals.Although the result of all theater education work is a public performance, which is an incentive for foreign language learners that should not be underestimated, the educational focus is on the process of playful development and practice, the trial action of specific social partners. This process opens up the possibility of promoting the overall personality of the learner, their ability to cooperate, trying out new social roles and enjoying play. However, this process requires new methodological, socio-pedagogical qualities and personal experience on the part of the pedagogue, both of which have hardly been available in teacher training courses so far.
My experiences in foreign language teacher training and in the educational system within the framework of Waldorf pedagogy have given me the courage to choose artistic ways to learn the foreign language more easily instead of the traditional methods and to design the rigid foreign language lessons in such a way that the learner has fun, joy and developed a love for the foreign language. In addition, the cultural contribution, namely the literary and cultural aspects, should not be underestimated.The article discusses how theatre can support language learning at the university level and how it helps learners acquiring professional competences. In the first part, the article will briefly outline forms of drama in language teaching.

Der Artikel ist dem Gedenken an den Professor, Übersetzer und Dichter Dr. Dušan Ludvik gewidmet, der in den Jahren 1954-1983 am Institut für Germanistik (Abteilung ftir germanische Sprachen und Literaturen) tätig war. Das Hauptgebiet seiner wissenschafrtlichen Tätigkeit war die alte deutsche Sprache und Literatur. Darüber hinaus hatte er großes Interesse für die Geschichte und Entwicklung des deutschsprachigen Theaters in Ljubljana sowie die Besuche von ausländischen Theaterwendertruppen im slowenischen Raum. Er hat zwei wichtige Abhandlungen zur deutschen Verslehre (Stabreim, Nibelungestrophe u.a.) veröffentlicht. Als selbstandiger Dichter hat er vier Gedichtsammlungen herausgegeben. Dušan Ludvik hat si eh auch als Übersetzer der Gedichte von Goethe und der ritterlichen Liebeslyrik einen Namen gemacht. Er hat zur Ausbildung vieler Germanistengenerationen Slowenien maßgebend beigetragen.

Als Bärbel Jogschies im November 2006 an der Universität Cork über ihre Arbeit als Theaterpädagogin am Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin berichtete, entstand im Gespräch mit SCENARIO-Mitherausgeber Manfred Schewe die Idee eines Interviews mit Armin Petras (alias Dramatiker Fritz Kater), dem neuen Intendanten des Maxim Gorki Theaters. Nun ist dieser Mann ein engagierter Künstler, der auf vielen Hochzeiten gleichzeitig tanzt, ein Workoholic, der oft an mehreren Inszenierungen parallel arbeitet und nebenher auch noch Stücke schreibt. Armin Petras bat um die Zusendung von Fragen per E-Mail, er würde sie dann unterwegs beantworten. Unser gemeinsames Brainstorming mündete in 16 SCENARIO-Fragen. Die Antworten von Armin Petras (AP) kamen sofort zurück, waren allerdings so kurz und knapp, dass wir Erläuterungen für nötig hielten. So kam es zu der recht ungewöhnlichen Form dieses Beitrags. Entsprechende Initialien markieren die vertiefenden Nachfragen von Manfred Schewe (MS) und die darauf Bezug nehmenden Erläuterungen von Bärbel Jogschies (BJ). . Der Artikel soll Interessierten einen Einblick in die deutsche Theaterpraxis und einige ihrer historischen Hintergründe gewähren. Der Beitrag unternimmt den Versuch, das Theater von René Pollesch strukturell als Komödie zu begreifen. Um dies zu tun, rücken die auffallenden kleinen Dinge und körperlichen Gesten der Schauspieler*innen wie das Gestikulieren oder Zappeln in den Vordergrund der Betrachtung, um als Elemente einer Komödienstruktur begriffen zu werden. Die Komödie ist für Pollesch ein Vehikel, über verschiedene Formen des Theaters, seine Spielweisen und Darstellungskonventionen zu sprechen. Damit verbunden ist die Frage nach einer anderen, zeitgenössischen Form von Subjektivität, die den Aporien spätmoderner Subjektivität kritisch begegnet. Polleschs Komödien antworten auf diese Herausforderungen mit dem Erspielen von Freiräumen, die durch die genuin theatrale Konfrontation von Logos, Sprache, und Körper, Physis, entstehen. Die symbolische Ordnung produziert auf diese Weise Unsinn als (neuen) Sinn, der andere Verbindungen zwischen ihren Elementen möglich erscheinen lässt.

In Zagreb – wie auch in anderen vergleichbaren mittel- und osteuropäischen Städten – wurde das Theaterleben lange von Vorstellungen deutschsprachiger Theatertruppen bestimmt. Die frühesten Aufführungen in deutscher Sprache – es ging um geschlossene Vorstellungen einheimischer Aristokraten – gehen auf das Jahr 1749 zurück. Öffentlich wurde in Zagreb auf Deutsch zwischen 1780 und 1860 gespielt, in der Regel ging es um Auftritte deutschsprachiger Schauspielertruppen, die sich für eine oder mehrere Saisonen in der Stadt niedergelassen hatten. – In diesem Aufsatz werden zunächst einige Höhepunkte der deutschsprachigen Bühnenkunst in Zagreb herausgestrichen, daraufhin das ansonsten sehr ambivalente Verhältnis der deutschsprachigen Truppen zu den kroatischen Theateraktivisten vorgeführt, die im zweiten Drittel des 19. Jahrhunderts eine nationale Schaubühne zu organisieren suchten, ein Anliegen, welches schließlich auch zur Einstellung deutschsprachiger Vorstellungen 1860 führte.

Ausdrucksvermögen und Kommunikationsfähigkeit werden [durch Drama-Aktivitäten] erweitert sowie die Sensibilisierung für sprachliche Phänomene angestrebt. Gleichzeitig führen der Spaß am Spiel und das Vergnügen an der Sprache zu höherer Sprechbereitschaft und bauen Sprechhemmungen ab. (Even 2003: 63f.) Das Ziel dieser Werkstatt ist die Verbesserung des Ausdrucksvermögens und der Kommunikationsfähigkeit sowie der Abbau der Sprechhemmungen, die Even in ihrer Publikation beschreibt. Es wird auch an der körperlichen und der non-verbalen Kommunikation durch Drama-Aktivitäten gearbeitet, die den Teilnehmern (TN) helfen sollen, sich besser auf Deutsch auszudrücken. Selbst dann, wenn ihnen in einer bestimmten Sprechsituation einmal der konkrete Wortschatz fehlen sollte. Über den Verlauf der Werkstatt und das kommunikative Vergnügen äußert sich eine der Teilnehmerinnen beispielsweise wie folgt: [SCBlockcitation] „Meine Freunde fragen mich, warum ich an so einer Theaterwerkstatt teilnehme. Ich finde, dass es klar ist: Weil mir Deutsch gefällt. Aber ich werde sehr nervös, wenn ich auf Deutsch sprechen muss. Meiner Meinung nach ist das Theater ein gutes Mittel, um die Angst zu nehmen. Nach unserem ersten Tag fühlte ich mich selbstbewusster. Ich finde, dass die Arbeit mit der Musik und der Mimik sehr positiv ist. Wer schon immer ein gut strukturiertes, komplexes und dabei übersichtliches Theaterhandbuch für seinen Fremdsprachenunterricht speziell Deutsch als Fremdsprache für alle Niveaustufen gesucht hat, wird mit Birgit Oelschlägers im Herbst 2017 erschienenem Buch fündig! Dass ein aktiv gestalteter Unterricht mehrere Vorteile bezüglich des Lernverhaltens, insbesondere der Lernmotivation und damit des Er-Lernens überhaupt eröffnet, findet fachlich immer breitere Anerkennung. Dies spiegelt sich besonders in der aktuellen fremdsprachendidaktischen Diskussion über ein performatives Lehren-Lernen-Forschen und auch in den Neurowissenschaften (vgl. Hüther 2014, Rittelmeyer 2012 und Sambanis 2013) wider. Theater bietet hierfür eine ideale Kunst-Form, da u.a. Bewegung und Sprache im Kontext erfolgen, kooperatives Arbeiten und Lernen sowie öffentliches Darstellen stattfindet. Von all dem profitiert ein aktiver Unterricht. Doch wie dieser ganz konkret gelingen kann, wird noch eher einzeln versucht und erprobt. Neben der fundierten und empirisch belegten dramapädagogischen Praxis von Manfred Schewe Fremdsprache inszenieren (1993) und Susanne Even Drama Grammatik (2003), wurde 1999 von Elektra Tselikas ein Handbuch Dramapädagogik im Sprachunterricht herausgebracht. Dieses bietet nach einer theoretischen Einführung in diese Arbeit und deren Bedeutung, eine praktische und inspirierende Anleitung mit Textbeispielen und Übungen für andere Lehrkräfte. 2005 erschien, ebenfalls im Deutschen Theaterverlag, das Handbuch Spiel mit Körper, Sprache, Medien.
