Felmet, Kathryn, et Richard Orr. Transport of the Critically Ill Child. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199918027.003.0003.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter provides essential information about risks and therapeutic opportunities related to interfacility and intrafacility transport of critically ill children. Background information regarding US regulation of the transfer of patients via the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act is provided. Also discussed is information crucial to making decisions about mode of transport (ground vs. air, helicopter vs. fixed wing), including presentations of specific risks related to each (vibration, noise, cold, changes in barometric pressure affecting oxygenation and volume of gas in enclosed patient cavities). Options for team composition (via emergency medical services, local emergency department providers, or pediatric specialized transport teams) are described. Finally, the concept of “the golden hour” is reviewed along with pitfalls when it is applied inappropriately to critically ill children who would benefit from more aggressive efforts at stabilization than rapid transfer without such efforts.

Ortiz Blanco, Luis, et Ben Van Houtte, dir. EU Regulation and Competition Law in the Transport Sector. 2e éd. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law:ocl/9780199671076.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Abstract This book is the successor to EC Competition Law in the Transport Sector , published in 1996, to give an overview of the then emerging application of European law to the transport sector. Since that time, this subject has expanded dramatically. The original theme, competition law, has matured and given rise to an extensive case law applying EU antitrust, merger control, and State aid rules. This topic is now complemented by an even more significant body of regulation, dealing with a wide range of issues such as market access, consumer and worker protection, safety, security, interoperability, infrastructure, and international relations. Unfortunately, none of the major EU law commentaries treats this subject in detail, and this book fills an important gap. The book consists of twenty-two chapters written by expert European Commission officials and private practitioners and provides details on the EU regulatory and competition law framework applying to each transport mode, as well as the relevant jurisprudence. It is targeted at lawyers providing advice to transport firms or in academia, and serves as a first point of reference in a field that has become highly complex for non-specialists.

Edmund, Hughes. 9 The IMO : Ship-sourced Emissions, Climate Change, and Global Ocean Governance. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198823957.003.0009.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
This chapter focusses on the vexed question of climate change and the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) attempts to control and reduce ship-sourced emissions. It notes that, while international maritime transport remains the most energy-efficient mode of mass cargo transport, a global approach to further improvements in energy efficiency and work to address greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships is highly necessary. After all, sea transport is predicted to grow significantly in the coming years. In line with this, a roadmap has been approved by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) for the development of a comprehensive strategy on the reduction of GHG emissions from ships. Under the roadmap and to provide a long-term vision for the shipping sector, the MEPC will need to address a number of important questions.

Résumé :
Accessibility has many facets. This study focuses on accessibility involving people’s travel, or to be more precise, on the ability to cover the distance from point A (origin) to point B (destination). Accessibility thus defined has its: (1) components (i.e. transport, land-use, individual and temporal components), (2) dimensions (i.e. travel origin and destination, distance decay, restrictions, barriers, mode of transport, extent of study area, socioeconomic and territorial cohesion, and dynamics) and (3) attributes (i.e. affordability, availability, nodal accessibility, and acceptability). The components, dimensions and attributes combine to form the world of accessibility. After having been a subject of academic writing for decades, that world has finally received its own comprehensive volume by Polish author. The book covers its topic in seven chapters. It begins with an introduction, which lays down the objectives and structure of the study and is followed by a chapter covering the definition of accessibility. Chapter 3 is devoted to the methodology of accessibility research. The fourth and longest chapter offers a review of the most important areas of the world of accessibility built around the four components and the dimensions of accessibility. Chapter 5 focuses on the attributes of accessibility, transport exclusion and access equality. Chapter 6 presents the basics of the authors’ own new model of four accessibility factors (network, spatial, travel and individual) developed in the form of a NeST box model. The volume ends with a review of the major threads and considerations of accessibility research in the immediate future, namely: (1) Big Data; (2) distance decay; (3) external spatial effects; (4) sensitivity, criticality and exposure; (5) development of new forms of transport; (6) affordability and equality; (7) long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic; (8) comparative analyses and evaluation using accessibility indices.

Résumé :
This book explores William Wordsworth’s pervasive influence on the tourist landscapes of the Lake District throughout the age of transport revolutions, popular tourism, and the Great 1914-18 War. It reveals how Wordsworth’s response to railways was not a straightforward matter of opposition and protest; his ideas were taken up by advocates and opponents of railways, and through their controversies had a surprising impact on the earliest motorists as they sought a language to describe the liberty and independence of their new mode of travel. Once the age of motoring was underway, the outbreak of the First World War encouraged British people to connect Wordsworth’s patriotic passion with his wish to protect the Lake District as a national heritage—a transition that would have momentous effects in the interwar period when the popularisation of motoring paradoxically brought a vogue for open-air activities and a renewal of Romantic pedestrianism. With the arrival of global tourism, preservation of the cultural landscape of the Lake District became an urgent national and international concern. By revealing how Romantic ideas of nature, travel, liberty and self-reliance were re-interpreted and utilized in discourses on landscape, transport, accessibility, preservation, war and cultural heritage, this book portrays multiple Wordsworthian legacies in modern ways of perceiving and valuing the nature and culture of the Lake District.

Résumé :
From the urban point of view, walkability is the mode of transport where the highest level of contact with the urban environment occurs and provides the most intense exchange between its agents. For this reason, it produces the greatest interaction with city life, promoting an almost organic relationship. Thus, primarily the walk of so repeated and automated is little reflected as an act in itself and can be held responsible for the reduced importance given to it in the treatment of urban space in Brazilian cities. And this occurs both in its understanding as a circulation system, as in its planning and formal spatial repercussion, responsible for generating an outline of urban design. Thus, commuting on foot, along with those who practice it, are systematically relegated by urban technology to a secondary level, where the understanding that adequate treatment of sidewalks and crossings predominates constitutes a kind of urban privilege, a luxury wasted on a second-class user. In this context, the research sought to understand the quality of the walkability and accessibility environment in the central region ofBrasília - the Southern Commercial Sector (SCS), considering the microscale (or street scale), as well as a survey of the physical system for accessibility : public facilities / urban barriers, urban furniture, sidewalks and shelters.

Cox, Peter, et Till Koglin, dir. The Politics of Cycling Infrastructure. Policy Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1332/policypress/9781447345152.001.0001.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Academic texts on cycling research are expanding rapidly. A dominant theme among these is the use of infrastructure measures to assist promotion of cycling as part of a movement towards sustainable mobility. Physical infrastructure is currently posited as the primary key to unlock cycling’s potential as a primary mode of sustainable transport. Individual studies rarely stand together to be read back to back, in order to allow comparison between them. The privilege of academic conferences is that they allow the attendee to compare and contrast different academic agendas and concerns of researchers, and to engage in conversation between them. This volume provides a comparative assessment of existing and historic struggles over cycling infrastructure. The aim of this volume is to bring a selection of those parallel voices together and to initiate that dialogue for a wider audience. It is argued that planning is one element of the operation, but what results is often very different from even the most comprehensive strategic imagination. Underlying this chaos however, is a lurking sense that the broader lessons of infrastructure provision for cycling needs to be connected with the political analyses of infrastructuring that derive from wider studies. The book concludes that infrastructures are in constantly in flux, contentious and contended. Furthermore, it concludes that politics is also embodied; lived out in the spaces of mundane and everyday travel.
