Chen, Yonghao. « Characterization of the New Neutron Line at CERN-n_TOF and Study of the Neutron-induced Fission of 237Np ». Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017SACLS204/document.
Texte intégralThe neutron time-of-flight (n_TOF)facility at CERN is a unique worldwide pulsedneutron source to measure the nuclear data over thewidest energy range with two beam lines currentlyexploited. One is horizontal with a ~185 metersflight path, sending neutrons to experimental area-1(EAR-1). The second one is a new line sendingneutrons vertically to experimental area-2 (EAR-2)with a ~20 meters flight path. The first part of this PhD work is dedicated to thecharacterization of the beam (flux, geometricalprofile, energy spectrum) of the new EAR-2 neutronbeam, of the utmost importance for the experimentalproposals and analyses. An experiment was carriedout at EAR-2, based on PPAC detectors looking atfission of 235U, and the beam profile and neutronflux have been obtained for the entire availableenergy range (from thermal to 200 MeV).The second part of the thesis aims to study theneutron-induced fission of 237Np. 237Np isabundantly produced in present nuclear reactor andis one of the major long-lived components ofnuclear waste which can be considered as apotential target of incineration in fast neutronreactors. Consequently its neutron-induced fissioncross section has been measured at differentfacilities. However, significant discrepancies existbetween different experiments. Especially, therecent one performed at n_TOF in 2010 is about 6%higher by comparison to the evaluation data basedon previous experiments. Therefore an experimenthas been performed at n_TOF EAR-1 to measure itsfission cross section, in a configuration allowing anaccurate control of the detection efficiency, aimingto give a definite answer to the puzzle. In this work,we found that the efficiencies for different targetelements are different, even though they havesimilar thickness, reflecting the conditions ofelectrodeposition. After application of thisefficiency correction in the energy range from 1 to 5MeV, the newly extracted fission cross section is 2-3% lower compared with our previous measurementin 2010, however they are 3-4% higher than the

Texte intégralThe subject of the thesis aims at developing a portable neutron imager with detection performance compatible with the needs of the nuclear research and industry, in particular those of decommissioning. This thesis is divided into three main areas of research, preceded by a bibliographic research phase. Following the latter, the localization approach adopted is spatial encoding fast neutron imaging. Neutron detectors were studied and several choices adapted to this challenge were selected for the continuation of the study. The first axis is dedicated to the studies on the development of a position-sensitive neutron detector. The second axis is related to the design and prototyping of a portable neutron imager, based on a coded aperture and a Timepix detector enhanced with a paraffin layer. The last axis concerns the deployment and experimental characterization of this prototype

Texte intégralConsidering a low enough kinetic energy, a free neutron can be materially or magnetically trapped in a defined volume. This trapping allows experimenters to study the neutron and its characteristics, and in this case, to measure its mean lifetime. The HOPE experiment commissioned at Laue Langevin Institute in Grenoble is aimed at providing a 1 %- accuracy value. One way to measure lifetime is to record every single neutron beta decay occurring in the trap by counting the emitted electrons. The detector SECOND has been specifically designed to fulfill this goal within HOPE but also to discriminate other types of particles that induce false events. The latter argument is the reason for the two detection stages SECOND is composed of. The plastic scintillators phoswich constitutes the main part of the detector and has been successfully operated during preliminary tests at low temperature. The rejection rate of cosmic muons events is about 98 %, and this value can be drastically enhanced using a more suitable data acquisition system

Texte intégralWe developed an integrated silicon detector to be embedded in a stratospheric balloon in order to investigate the radiative atmospheric environment. The detector was calibrated with a Californium source, and it was fully characterized under neutron beams which produced various secondary ionizing particles. Differential detection cross sections for different neutron beam energies were shown to be in good agreement with simulations performed with the MC-Oracle code. We performed four stratospheric balloon flights (with ESA and CNES) and confirmed the correlation between the count rate and the altitude. Moreover, we observed that the radiative environment is not isotropic and demonstrated the potential of our tool for investigating the radiative atmospheric environment. These results are useful for estimating the particle flux that affects electronic devices and onboard aircraft systems

Texte intégralStill, the nuclear fission process and the de-excitation of the fission fragments is not fully understood. Current theoretical models can not predict and explain correctly every experimentally observed correlations, and new correlated data upon neutron emission, gamma-ray emission and kinetic energy of the fission fragments are needed. In this context, coincident use of a fission fragment detector and the CARMEN detector would provide compelling data for these models by measuring both neutron multiplicity, total gamma-ray energy, total kinetic energy and possibly total neutron energy. The work presented here consists in developing a fission fragment detector and using it together with CARMEN in order to perform fission calorimetry measurements. Initially, we developed a new detector for fission studies whose principle is dissolving the actinide of choice into an organic liquid scintillator. Monte Carlo simulations and neutron induced experiments were used to fully characterize its performances and shown it can be used as a fission trigger for various measurements, such as fission cross section or spontaneous fission rate measurements, and used as a fission veto. The second part of this work was dedicated to the study of CARMEN’s ability to measure the total gamma-ray energy and total neutron energy released in fission. For this purpose, lab characterization of the detector’s performances and Monte Carlo simulation and analysis of its “prompt” response to neutrons and gamma-rays were performed

Texte intégralNeutron detectors play a crucial role in various applications such as homeland security (airports, borders and ports) to control illegal activities involving nuclear materials, nuclear power plants for neutron radiation safety and monitoring, high energy physics and nuclear science. In addition, recent events such as the Fukushima explosion and the polonium poisoning have stimulated interest in the development of small, portable and low-cost solid-state neutron detectors (SSND). To achieve high efficiency in SSND factors such as neutron absorption and charge collection are critical. The general objective of this work is to develop efficient solid-state thermal neutron detectors based on boron containing III-nitride materials such as boron nitride (BN) and boron-gallium nitride (BGaN). Boron in these materials is very important for the detection of thermal neutrons due to the high neutron capture cross section of the isotope boron-10 (10B) and its low sensitivity to gamma radiation. However, the main challenge with boron containing III-N for neutron detection is the quality of the materials. For instance, growth of thick, high quality single crystalline boron-rich BGaN needed for neutron detectors is difficult due to strain-induced degradations such as phase separation and columnar 3D growth. Therefore, we developed an innovative approach consisting of BGaN/GaN superlattices (SLs) with a nominal boron content of 3% in the BGaN layer. These BGaN/GaN SLs materials were used to fabricate metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) and p-i-n heterojunction devices, which showed significant neutron-induced signal. Even with this approach, it is found that there are several constraints on the boron content, the quality of the material, and the overall thickness, which are key factors for the realization of high-efficiency neutron detectors.By using binary BN (100% boron) epitaxial layers, higher thermal neutron absorption and performance of neutron detectors are expected. Our group has reported for the first time large area 2D layered h-BN films with high crystalline quality on sapphire substrate by metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). These BN films were used to demonstrate high efficiency deep UV photodetectors. In this work, we have grown up to 2.5µm thick natural and 10B enriched BN samples and used them to fabricate MSM based detectors. The advantages of MSM structures are the ability to achieve self-powered operation, similar to that demonstrated for UV photodetectors, and to benefit from internal gain in order to increase the neutron signal. This work also aims to investigate the control of the electrical conductivity of h-BN by in-situ Mg doping for the future realization of p-n based BN neutron detectors. Since a high boron content is highly desirable for neutron detectors, we have further explored experimentally for the first time a new material: boron-rich BAlN alloys

Texte intégralA low-carbon energy outlook to mitigate the climate change requires the replacement of fossil fuel by sources with low CO2 emissions, like nuclear energy.. One of the options discussed in the Gen-IV International Forum for the the next generation of nuclear reactors is to use the thorium cycle. The fissile isotope 233U is among the most important isotopes in the thorium cycle and directly responsible for the neutron economy. One of the particularities of this nucleus is to have a capture cross section which is one order of magnitude lower than fission, making the measurement of the 233U capture cross section very challenging as indicated by only two high resolution data sets available since the 1960s. In this thesis, a new measurement at the n_TOF neutron source is described employing a novel compact fission chamber inserted in the center of the Total Absorption Calorimeter g-ray detector. The fission chamber allows to tag and subsequently subtract the gamma rays from the fission reaction aiming to improve the accuracy of the 233U capture cross section. The performance of the custom tailored fission chamber is described in detail and allows to extract information about the prompt fission g-rays. A detailed discussion of the data reduction process and the key elements in the analysis is given resulting in the calculation of the 233U-alpha-ratio, the ratio between the capture and fission cross-section

Texte intégralBeta-decay is a crucial tool in exploring the structure of exotic nuclei. The decay of neutron-rich nuclei is often followed by the emission of delayed neutrons. This work focuses on the R&D for a new modular time-of-flight array for decay spectroscopy. The detector will use a liquid scintillator, allowing for neutron-gamma discrimination, and will be coupled to a digital acquisition system. The neutron-gamma discrimination was investigated using the FASTER digital electronics. First, the well known charge comparison method was studied and performances superior to those obtained with standard analogue electronics were obtained. Different methods were also explored and compared quantitatively. Except for the method of Gatti and De Martini, charge comparison provides the best discrimination. In order to overcome the limitations of liquid scintillators for low-energy neutrons (En<1 MeV), the light yield and discrimination capabilities were evaluated for 7 small volume scintillators including liquids, crystals and new discriminating plastic scintillators. The best performances were obtained for stilbene and p-therpenyl crystals. Intrinsic detection efficiencies and cross talk probabilities of the envisaged modules were measured with monoenergetic neutrons in the range 0. 5 to 15. 5 MeV. In the case of cross talk, this represents the first measurements ever made for low energy neutrons (1. 4 to 5 MeV). Monte Carlo simulations were undertaken for both the efficiencies and cross talk. In the case of the former very good agreement was found, and while the overall behavior of the cross talk could be reproduced more sophisticated simulations need to be developed

Texte intégralThis thesis was performed in the context of a project aiming to measure the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the neutron at the Paul Scherrer Institute. Two aspects have been studied: The detection and the polarization analysis of ulracold neutrons. Three types of detectors have been tested at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL): The cascade-U (GEM technology), the 3He gas detector and 6Li-doped glass scintillators (GS family). Their detection efficiency and their background sensitivity have been measured. The GS10 scintillator is competitive with the 3He gas detector under the conditions realized with the EDM spectrometer. A GS3/GS20 scintillator stack has enabled to improve the neutron/gamma discrimination. It has been found 20% less efficient than the 3He gas detector under the EDM spectrometer. The cascade-detector has been observed to be 20% less efficient than a 500 µm thick GS10 glass as confirmed by simulations. A new system for simultaneous spin analysis is presented. It consists of two independent detection systems (arms) which are each made of an adiabatic spin flipper, a spin analyzer, and a detector. The arms detect opposite spin components, allowing the simultaneous counting of both neutron spin orientations. A prototype mounted in horizontal configuration has been tested at ILL. The analyzing power of both arms has been measured to be 80%. The transmission of the system without spin analyzers has been found to be 50%

Texte intégralNuclear radiation detectors are important tools in many fields such as in nuclear reactors, homeland security and medical applications. Recent advances in semiconductor technology allow construction of highly efficient low noise detectors for different nuclear radiations. Silicon carbide (SiC) is a wide band gap semiconductor with a high thermal conductivity and high radiation resistance. It is suitable for a harsh environment where high temperatures and radiation fluxes may exist. In the framework of the European project (I_SMART) the purpose of this work is to demonstrate the reliability of new methods of realizing nuclear radiation detectors and to study their performance under different types of irradiation (fast and thermal neutrons) and at elevated temperatures. Different methods have been used to realize SiC based-radiation detectors. For instance boron ion implantation has been used to create the neutron converter layer either in the metallic contact or directly in the SiC. The fabricated detectors have been tested in the BR1 nuclear reactor revealing the thermal neutron detection and the feasibility of gamma discrimination from thermal neutrons using one single detector. Such detectors are sensitive to fast neutrons with a stable response under elevated temperatures (up to 150 °C). Furthermore, the studied detectors show stability under different neutron fluxes, indicating a reliability of such new methods of realizing radiation detectors which could replace those of the current state of the art

Texte intégralWithin the scope of atomic nuclear structure studies with neutron-induced reactions, this work presents the results of a fission fragment study in the N=50-60 region, the development of a fission event tagger, and the production of the isomer Pt-195m. Each of the different sub-topics has its origin in the 2012/13 EXILL campaign, where nuclear structure studies were carried out with neutron-induced reactions, and explored with a γ-efficient detector array. In the first part of this thesis, the neutron-rich region around neutron number N=50-60 was investigated with neutron-induced fission reactions on the fissile targets U-235 and Pu-241. Gamma spectroscopy methods were applied for the identification of the respective fission fragments, the assignment of γ transitions, and the analysis of lifetimes of excited states. The slope fit method as well as the recently developed generalized centroid difference method were used for the analysis of lifetimes in the low picoseconds to sub-nanoseconds range. Lifetimes for the nuclei Kr-92, Kr-93 and Zr-101 are presented. In the second part, first results of the development of a new detector for the discrimination of fission fragments are presented. This fission event tagger is intended to be used at the FIssion Product Prompt γ-ray Spectrometer (FIPPS) at the Institut Laue-Langevin. Within the scope of this study, two different detector designs, based on a solid plastic scintillator and an organic liquid scintillator, respectively, were tested. In the third part the possibility of the specific population of the spin-isomer in Pt-195 is discussed with special regard to its use as radioisotope in nuclear medicine. Such a specific activation could be realized via certain “doorway states” in photo-excitation reactions. The search for these doorway states was initiated within a neutron capture experiment at EXILL where potential states were found. The activation of the isomer via these states was tested afterwards with photonuclear reactions using the high intense γ-beam HIGS of the TUNL facility

Texte intégralNowadays, the material testing reactors (MTR) are playing a crucial role for nuclear industry. The research reactors allow carrying out the research on material damage and nuclear fuel advanced studies. Harsh radiation environment near the nuclear reactor core requires the radiation detectors to be resistant to high radiation level and high temperature. Neutron radiation detector for nuclear reactor applications plays an important role in getting information about the actual neutron flux. Most suitable semiconductors for harsh environment applications are SiC and diamond thanks to their outstanding properties. The aim of this thesis is to compare the ability of these two semi-conductors to detect neutrons. For this purpose, the neutron irradiation tests of detectors were implemented at MINERVE nuclear research reactor at CEA Cadarache. In this work we also studied the response of both materials to 14 MeV neutron beam with the prospect for future applications for fusion facilities. This work helps to improve the SiC-based detector characterization. The functionality of this detector could be enhanced by integrating it with appropriate radiation resistant electronics and tools for the signal analysis which was developed in the frame of this thesis

Texte intégralThe Double Chooz experiment aims at accurately measuring the value of the leptonic mixing angle θ₁₃. To this intent, the experiment makes the most of two identical detectors -- filled with gadolinium-loaded liquid scintillator -- observing $antinue$'s released by the two 4.25GWth nuclear reactors of the French Chooz power plant. The so-called "far detector" -- located at an average distance of 1050m from the two nuclear cores -- has been taking data since April 2011. The "near detector" -- at an average distance of 400}m from the cores -- has monitored the reactor since December 2014. The θ₁₃ mixing parameter leads to an energy dependent disappearance of $antinue$'s as they propagate from the nuclear cores to the detection sites, which allows for a fit of the sin² 2θ₁₃ value. By reason of correlations between the detectors and an iso-flux site layout, the detection systematics and the $antinue$ flux uncertainty on the θ₁₃ measurement are dramatically suppressed. In consequence, the precision of the θ₁₃ measurement is dominated by the uncertainty on the backgrounds and the relative normalisation of the $antinue$-rates. The main background originates from the decay of βn-emitters -- generated by $mu$-spallation -- within the detector itself. The energy spectra of these cosmogenic isotopes have been simulated and complemented by a diligent error treatment. These predictions have been successfully compared to the corresponding data spectra, extracted by means of an active veto, whose performance has been studied at both sites. The rate of cosmogenic background remaining within the $antinue$ candidates has also been assessed. Addtionally, the normalisation of the $antinue$ rates, bound to the number of target protons within each detector, has been evaluated. All these works were part of the first Double Chooz multi-detector results, yielding sin² (2θ₁₃) = 0.111±0.018

Texte intégralIn the context of nuclear reactor physics, one of the main issues is the control of the chain reaction. After a fission event has occurred, around three prompt neutrons are immediately emitted. Luckily, a small fraction of neutrons - less than 1% - appears with a certain delay with respect to the fission event. Delayed neutrons (DN) are an easy way out from the uncontrollable prompt-neutron driven chain reaction because they slow down the response of the reactor to a change in reactivity. Quantifying the fraction of such neutrons as well as their kinetic behavior is essential to design a safe reactor. The main consequence of a lack of accurate DN data is the conservatism in the design of a reactor. Nowadays, the discrepancy between the reactivity simulated using different international databases, rises up to 16% for LWRs, and the uncertainties associated with the recommended parameters are still too large for the needs of the industry. The DN parameters are generally estimated through a calculation or an integral measurement. This Ph.D. aims at producing a new set of DN parameters by performing both calculations and measurements, and by exploiting the two through the Bayesian inference, with the aim of reducing the uncertainties and creating the associated covariance matrices. The results for 235U, together with the calculated values for 238U, have been tested in three benchmarks, giving satisfying solutions with respect to the effective delayed neutron fraction. The main achievement of this work is the great improvement in the predicted reactivity, especially for negative periods, which is accompanied by an extremely good precision, never exceeding 2.2%

Texte intégralIn France, the references associated to the neutron fluence and the deriva-ted dosimetric quantities are under the responsability of the micro-irradiation and neutronmetrology and dosimetry laboratory (LMDN)of IRSN. In order to improve the definition ofreferences in fluence and energy of the monoenergetic neutron fields, produced at AMANDEfacility, a micro-TPC gaseous detector, called LNE-IRSN-MIMAC, is developping in collabo-ration with LPSC.In a previous work, the detector was qualified for neutron fields in the energy rangebetween 27 keV and 565 keV. The objective of the present work is to extend the range of theμTPC above 1 MeV. The choice of the gas, the development of an analysis method and thedetector characterization allowed to validate the detector capacity to perform measurements inmonoenergetic neutron fields ranging from 250 keV up to 6,5 MeV with a relative uncertaintyof 3% and 2,5% respectively in energy and fluence

Texte intégralThe Fréjus detector is a 900 tons fine grained calorimeter built in order to look for nucleon decay. It has reached a fiducial sensitivity of 1. 3 kt. Year after four years of data taking. Ln this thesis the decay modes with a missing anti-neutrino and one meson are studied. The analyses of all the meson decay channels are described, in particular those where the final state involves only photons or a muon due to K+ decay. The topological and kinematical cuts are different for all the channels; the detection efficiency computed by Monte-Carlo simulation ranges from 10% to 16%. The background is due to atmospheric neutrino interactions in the detector, and is estimated from a simulation. Data are consistent with the calculated background, which is smaller or close to one event per decay channel. Lower nucleon lifetime limits are obtained, which range from 0. 9 10³¹ to 2. 9 10 ³¹ years

Boursette, Delphine. « Neutrino physics with SoLid and SuperNEMO experiments ». Thesis, Université Paris-Saclay (ComUE), 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018SACLS272/document.
Texte intégralNeutrinos are the most abundant fundamental particles of matter in the Universe. They were detected for the first time in 1956. Since then, several experiments have tried to unveil their mysteries. They only interact weakly so they are difficult to detect. It is known that their masses are very low and that they can oscillate between three leptonic flavours. However, several questions remain about their masses, their nature or the existence of sterile neutrinos. This thesis addresses the last two questions with two different experiments: SuperNEMO and SoLid. The goal of the SuperNEMO experiment is to understand the nature of neutrinos, whether it is its own antiparticle (Majorana particle) or not (Dirac particle). This is investigated by searching for neutrinoless double beta decay as this process is possible only if neutrinos are Majorana particles. Source foils of the double beta emitter ⁸²Se are installed at the center of the SuperNEMO demonstrator which is being assembled at the Modane Underground Laboratory. This detector is composed of a wire chamber to detect the tracks of the two electrons emitted in the decays and a calorimeter to measure their energies. Neutrinoless double beta decay measurement is very difficult because if this process exists, it is extremely rare. An important work has thus to be done to decrease backgrounds from cosmic rays or natural radioactivity. In this thesis, different backgrounds have been simulated to understand their impact on the measurement of the energy of the two electrons from ⁸²Se double beta decay. It is shown that radioactivity from photomultipliers glasses will not be negligible but it will be possible to measure it precisely in dedicated channels. Copper foils have also been simulated in the source strips to demonstrate that they can help to control efficiently the backgrounds. Following this work, it has been decided to install copper foils in addition to ⁸²Se foils. The second experiment investigated in this thesis is the SoLid experiment which is looking for the existence of sterile neutrinos. Several experimental anomalies could be explained by oscillations of reactor antineutrinos toward sterile neutrinos. The SoLid detector is looking for an oscillation signal at the Belgian BR2 reactor by measuring the antineutrino flux as a function of their energy and their traveling distance thanks to a fine segmentation. The reactor antineutrinos are detected via inverse beta decay. The antineutrino interaction signal is thus the emission in coincidence of a positron and a neutron. Positrons are detected by plastic scintillator cubes in PVT and neutrons are detected by ⁶LiF:ZnS sheets placed on 2 faces of each cube. A first prototype, SM1, has demonstrated the advantages of this technology, particularly to discriminate backgrounds. A part of the work of this thesis consisted in developing and exploiting a test bench to optimize the light collection of the detector in order to improve the energy resolution of the SoLid detector. By testing different materials and configurations, the test bench measurement demonstrated that an energy resolution of 14 % can be achieved for SoLid phase I, while it was 20 % for the SM1 prototype. The improvements proposed have been taken into account for the SoLid detector construction that was achieved in 2017. An analysis of the first detector data is also presented to show SoLid sensitivity to reactor antineutrino detection
