Résumé :
It was customary in the seventeenth century to assimilate court ballet with drama, as both art forms were seen to strive for a common aim: the imitation or representation of nature. However, critics were also keen to point out their essential differences, for, unlike tragedy, ballet disregarded the rules of neo-classical aesthetics and its only concern seemed to be to please and to entertain. This was particularly evident in the court ballets written by Desmarets de Saint-Sorlin between 1639 and 1641. Unsurprisingly, they were singled out for special criticism by theorists of the ballet, who highlighted their dramatic shortcomings, and failed to see that they constituted another form of dramatic aesthetics, which was conspicuous precisely because of its emancipation from the strictures of Aristotelian theory. It could be said that the ballets of Desmarets had all the hallmarks of contemporary tragicomedy: irregularity of construction, diversity of action, disregard for the unity of tone, etc., but in adapting the principles of this new aesthetics to the ballet, Desmarets ran the risk of transgressing the boundaries of tragicomedy and even of drama, approaching a genre which was no longer dramatic but narrative, i.e. epic poetry.

Nicolas Desmarest (1725-1815), one of the great pioneering field naturalists of the eighteenth century, began to pursue geological field work only in the later 1750s, Well past the age of 30. Until that time, the patterns of Desmarest's scientific interests and thinking resembled those of a scholarWhose range of experienceWas defined mostly by books. In this essay I attempt to characterize Desmarest's intellectual orientations, prior to his conversion into an investigative naturalist. Before his first efforts in active field research, Desmarest became committed to an empiricist epistemology of a phenomenalist type, emphasizing know ledge of natural regularities in a fashion parallel to views expressed in the early volumes of Histoire Naturelle, by Georges-Louis Leclerc, comte du Buffon (1707-1788). Through his close linksWith antiquarian scholars, Desmarest formed critical mental habits regarding use of historical and archeological evidence in interpretations of the past. These early scholarly experiences helped shape his approach to work as a field geologist. I suggest also that Desmarest's employment as a government analyst of practical and industrial arts, at the very time he began active scientific field work, contributed to his rapid and successful embrace of empirical procedures in science. Let us consult nature herself, who ordinarily leaves recognizable marks of her operations, even if she likes most often to cloak them in disguise, to hide them from minds unfamiliar with her tricks, or heedless in following their solution.
This article presents the most relevant information on the establishment of the French Academy (1635). It begins with the legacy of Akadmus, in whose gardens Plato exposed his philosophy, as well as with the contribution of Renaissaance Italy and particularly of "Hotel de Rambouillet", the private literary room of Marquise de Rambouillet. Finally, the article highlights the participation of the direct forerunners of the establishment of the Academy: Cardinal de Richelieu, the scholar Valentin Conrart, whose house served as a gathering place for a circle of writers and men of letters from whose minds arose the idea of this establishment, Boisrobert, Cerisay, Desmarets, Faret, Giry, Godeau, Gombauld, Malleville, the abbot of Serisy and Vaugelas.

La Pampa province is divided into two clearly distinguishable fractions: a small northeastern humid sector corresponding to the Pampas ecoregion and a drier western sector, represented by the Monte de Llanuras y Mesetas (termed Monte region in this paper) and Espinal ecoregions (sensu Brown et al. 2006). These three ecoregions are visibly distinguishable from an edaphological and phytogeographic point of view, while the mammalian fauna composition is homogeneous. The study area was located in the central part of the province, comprising the Monte and Espinal ecoregions (Fig. 1). In that area three species of armadillos are recorded (Soibelzon et al. 2015). Two of these (Zaedyus pichiy Desmarest, 1804 and Chaetophractus villosus Desmarest, 1804) (Xenarthra: Chlamyphoridae) are the most common and widely distributed armadillos both in the province and in the country, while the third species, Chlamyphorus truncatus Harlan, 1825, has a more restricted distribution and is one of the most cryptic and least known armadillos in the country. For this reason, in our fieldwork ectoparasites were obtained only from the first two species mentioned.

Résumé :
The relative proportions of the digestive tract were rarely explored to understand the behaviour and the ecology of neotropical marsupials. In this study, proportions of the digestive tract and diet were compared in seven opossum species. The animals studied were Didelphis albiventris Lund, 1840, D. aurita Wied-Neuwied, 1826, Metachirus nudicaudatus (Desmarest, 1817), Philander frenatus (Olfers, 1818), Lutreolina crassicaudata Desmarest, 1804, Monodelphis sorex (Hensel, 1872) and Caluromys lanatus (Olfers, 1818). Segments of digestive tracts of marsupials were measured and differences were statistically tested by Analysis of Variance and Covariance. Caecum and hard guts were responsible for the main differences among opossums, although all segments differed significantly. Caluromys lanatus was the most specialised species, with a large hard gut and caecum, small stomach and shorter small gut. The large caecum of M. nudicaudatus and the shortest hard gut of M. sorex were also noticed. The arboreal C. lanatus has a well different feeding habit and life style regarding other marsupials studied, such as M. sorex and M. nudicaudatus which are terrestrial, corroborating the results reached.

Résumé :
In our article ‘Neglected evidence about the actor Michel Baron (1653–1729)’, which appeared in Theatre Research International, 18, 3 (1993), 173–76, we quoted a letter from Madame to Baron Von Hading (foot of p. 174). Madame refers to the actress Mlle Desmares, a prominent member of the French company in the early eighteenth century. The first part of the quotation was as follows:He did not think of it after the death of the king, but la Desmares [an actress of the Comédie-Française], perceiving that no one was going to see them any more, came to the conclusion that they would fare better if Baron were back in the company, and she persuaded him.The king died in 1715, and the incident described occurred in, or shortly before, 1720.After the proofs were corrected and returned, an error crept in which dismayed us greatly. Our parenthesis, ‘an actress of the Comedie-Française’ was replaced by another: ‘better known as la Champmesle’. We did not sanction this amendment, and it is wrong. So much so, in fact, that it looks like carelessness and ignorance on our part, the apprehension of which may tell against acceptance of our findings and objective critical appreciation of our conclusions. We are therefore most grateful to the Editor for allowing us to insert this correction, which we believe to be important. The actress known as La Champmeslé, Marie Desmares, died in 1698. She was the wife of the actor Champmeslé, whose name she took, and she was probably the greatest actress of her generation; she was also the celebrated mistress of Racine.

Résumé :
Comparative morphological studies can provide insights into an animal’s ecology and evolutionary history. Functional morphological studies of the kangaroo forelimb are few in number and new work could provide novel tools to aid in the interpretation of fossil taxa and the understanding of the evolutionary history of kangaroos and marsupials as a whole. A description of the shoulder and forelimb musculature of the tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii) with comparisons to the red kangaroo (Macropus rufus Desmarest, 1842), the western grey kangaroo (Macropus fuliginosus Desmarest, 1817) and the quokka (Setonix brachyurus Quoy & Gaimard, 1830) is presented. The species chosen were readily available and represent a range in size of the archetypal kangaroo form. Muscle maps of forelimb and shoulder muscles were constructed as an aid to comparing the spatial arrangement of muscle origins and insertions. The anatomical pattern of forelimb musculature in terrestrial macropodine kangaroos and wallabies is highly conservative. Functionally, the musculature of the forelimb corresponds to a supporting role of the limb during slow pentapedal locomotion. The illustrations of muscle insertions provided in this work will be a useful reference for future work in comparative marsupial anatomy and palaeobiology.

Résumé :
The small extent of seasonally snow-covered Australian mountains means that there has not been a great selective pressure on the mammalian fauna for adaptations to this environment. Only one large marsupial, the common wombat (Vombatus ursinus (Shaw, 1800)), is widespread above the winter snowline. In the past 20 years, with snow depth and duration declining, the swamp wallaby (Wallabia bicolor (Desmarest, 1804)) has become more common above the winter snowline. The red-necked wallaby (Macropus rufogriseus (Desmarest, 1817)) is common in alpine Tasmania where seasonal snow cover is neither as deep nor as long-lasting as on the mainland, but has only been recorded regularly above the winter snowline in the mainland Snowy Mountains since 2011. This study examines morphological aspects of locomotion of these three herbivorous marsupials in snow. The wombat is the best adapted to snow, with quadrupedal gait and an expanded home range allowing it to locate and feed on the same plant groups as it does at lower elevation. Wallabies are poorly adapted to locomotion in snow, but the browsing swamp wallaby is able to maintain its dietary habit by feeding on exposed shrubs in deep snow, whereas the red-necked wallaby, which depends more on grazing, appears constrained to areas where snow is shallow.

Résumé :
In 1999 divers discovered a population of the burrowing mantis shrimp Rissoides (Meiosquilla) desmaresti (Crustacea: Stomatopoda) east of the St Tudwal's Islands, North Wales. This species has only sporadically been recorded in UK waters and commonly occurs in the Mediterranean. In summer 2000 the burrow morphology and distribution of these shrimps in the area east of the St Tudwal's Islands was investigated. Burrows were found at ten of the 15 sites investigated in a survey area measuring ∼18 km2. Burrow density varied from one to 11 burrows per 100 m2. The burrows were always recorded in sediments consisting of a mixture of mud, sand and gravel but were not present at sites with a high proportion of mud (>70%) or sandy sediments with very little mud ([les ]2%). Resin casts of six burrows revealed that these have a simple elongated U-shape, with an average length of ∼450 mm and depth of ∼160 mm. The average diameter of the burrow entrance was 19±2 mm and the diameter of the burrow along the horizontal section varied between 18 and 38 mm with a distinct constriction part way along.

Résumé :
The current study was conducted to calculate the annual Occurrence, monthly density and relative abundance of the Metapenaeus affinis. The samples were collected monthly for the period from October 2017 to September 2018. Some environmental factors such as temperature of water and air, pH, salinity, dissolved oxygen and turbidity were measured. We obtained 7 types of shrimp belonging to three families in the Al-Burka station and the Al Sabbaghia Station , which are 7 species, all of which belong to the Division of arthropods and crustaceans, the first family: Penaeidae is a banyan family that includes Metapeneaus affinis, Penaeus semisulcatus, Family: Atyidae, include Caridina babaulti basrensis , Atyaephyra desmaresti mesopotamica and Family: Palamonidae includes Exopalaemon styliferus, Palaemon elegans and Macrobrachium nipponense divided into four categories according to the Yearly Occurrence Resident, Fluctuated, Occasional, Rare . The monthly density of each species of shrimp was calculated and the range was: for Metapenaeus affinis 0-325.85 Ind./ m² and Penaeus semisulacatus 0-5.32 Ind./ m² and Caridina babaulti basrensis 0-111.72 Ind./ m² Atyaephyra desmaresti mesopotamica 0-679.63 Ind./ m² Exopalaemon styliferus 0-23.94 Ind./ m² Palaemon elegans 0-19.95 Ind./m² Macrobrachium nipponense 0-55.86 Ind./ m² . The highest density in the Al-Burka station for Metapeneaus affinis to 2600.15 Ind./ m² The Lowest density for Penaeus semisulacatus to 9.31 Ind./ m² and the highest density in the Al Sabbaghia Station for cardinia babaulti basrensis to 320.53 Ind./ m² and the lowest density for Exopalaemon styliferu at 3.99 Ind./ m² and The total density of the Al-Burka station in the east Al-Hammar Marsh was higher than the. Al Sabbaghia Station In Chabaish Marsh . The monthly abundance of shrimp was calculated as Metapenaeus affinis 0-100%, Penaeus semisulacatus 0-1.87 %, Caridina babaulti basrensis 0-93.33 %, Atyaephyra desmaresti mesopotamica 0-100 %, Exopalaemon styliferus 0-27.27% ,Palaemon elegans 0- 26.66 % , Macrobrachium nipponense 0-73.33 %. . The results of the statistical analysis showed a positive relationship between abundance and water temperature, pH and salinity and showed significant differences between abundance and acuityP< 0.007 between sovereignty and mean P< 0.018 The correlation coefficient was positive between abundance and (temperature water, pH , Salinity and acacia) and the correlation coefficient between abundance and dissolved oxygen.

Résumé :
A technique for trapping and immobilising small macropods is described and tested on forest-dwelling Tammar wallabies (Macropus eugenii Desmarest). The trapping method uses wire fencing and a monofilament nylon drop-net. The animals were immobilised with ketamine hydrochloride and xylazine. Tammar wallabies are reputedly hard to catch, but our technique produced higher trapping rates, lower trap-avoidance rates and lower death rates than other methods. In all, 46 Tammars were captured in 29 trap-nights. No deaths occurred during, or in the four weeks following, trapping.

Résumé :
Chromosome number and morphology were studied in gonadal tissue of 11 species of Atlantidae, 2 species of Carinariidae, and 3 species of Pterotracheidae, using an air-drying technique and Giemsa staining. In the Atlantidae the diploid chromosome number was the same in males and females and there were no heteromorphic chromosomes. The diploid chromosome number in nine species of Atlanta was 30 and the majority of chromosome pairs were metacentric and submetacentric. In Protatlanta souleyeti the diploid number was 28, and included five metacentric, six submetacentric, and three subtelocentric chromosome pairs. Oxygyrus keraudreni had a diploid chromosome number of 32, with 10 metacentric and 6 submetacentric chromosome pairs. A striking difference between the Atlantidae and the Carinariidae and Pterotracheidae was the presence of heteromorphic sex chromosomes in the latter two families. Male Pterosoma planum (2n = 32) had simple XY sex chromosomes, but males of Carinaria japonica (2n = 33), Pterotrachea scutata (2n = 33), Pterotrachea hippocampus (2n = 31), and Firoloida desmaresti (2n = 31) showed three heteromorphic chromosomes, suggesting a multiple sex-determining mechanism, X1X2Y. The locations of the female sex chromosomes in the karyotypes of female Pterotrachea hippocampus (2n = 32) and Firoloida desmaresti (2n = 32) were tentatively proposed. Cytogenetic features observed among the three families are supportive of previous interpretations of evolutionary trends in the Heteropoda based on morphology, i.e., that the Atlantidae are the most primitive family and gave rise to the Carinariidae and Pterotracheidae.

Résumé :
The shrimp genus Palaemon Weber, 1795 and its related genera in Taiwan are reviewed based on newly collected specimens, whilst older records are critically reviewed. Five genera and 11 species are now known to occur in Taiwan, although there are no recent records for Palaemon modestus (Heller, 1862), which could be nationally extinct. The records of P. debilis Dana, 1852 and Nematopalaemon tenuipes (Henderson, 1893) in Taiwan are confirmed. Three genera, namely Brachycarpus Spence Bate, 1888, Leander Desmarest, 1849 and Leandrites Holthuis, 1950, each with one species are reported for the first time from Taiwan.

Résumé :
The temporal association between drinking and feeding in four captive tammar wallabies (Macropus eugenii Desmarest) maintained on various foods is examined. Tammars maintained on cubed carrots never drank. In tammars fed pellets food-associated drinking took place and 77.5% (7.4, s.e.) of drinking episodes commenced within 60 s of the beginning or end of a feeding event. Drinking events occurred singly, were of short duration and increased in frequency but not duration, when low-quality pellets were fed. Food- associated drinking in the tammar may result from the induction of drinking episodes of relatively fixed duration by an oropharyngeal reflex.
