Morrison, Heather. « Online catalogue research and the verbal protocol method ». MCB University Press, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/957.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The verbal protocol method is used extensively in computer usability studies. This study was designed to test the feasibility of using the verbal protocol method as a means of conducting field research on the online catalogue. Ten undergraduate students conducted their own research on DRA’s Infogate. As they searched, they talked aloud about what keys they were pressing, what was happening on the screen, and their reactions. Transcripts of sessions were analyzed. A total of 65 different problems or comments were noted during search sessions, with 11 problems or comments noted in three or more sessions. This supports the hypothesis that the verbal protocol method is a valuable means of identifying common problems for users. It is suggested that the verbal protocol method offers great potential as a research tool in librarianship, for example in the area of interface design.

Pan, Zhenghui. « A novel library catalogue system ». Thesis, View thesis, 2009. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/44313.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
It has become an increasing challenge to apply knowledge management tools in modern library information systems that deliver the most up-to-date and relevant information to end users in a quick, efficient and user-friendly manner. According to a survey on city council libraries in the Sydney area, there is a proliferation of common problems associated with searching speed and accuracy, scalability and the user-friendly interface, all of which are closely related to the performance of the catalogue search scheme. The library information systems currently used in local public council libraries are usually decades old, and therefore cannot meet requirements due to the rapid increase in the amount and categories of library collections. The current marketing price for a library catalogue system (including the maintenance expenses) can be prohibitively high. While a large size organization such as a university can afford to install and maintain such a modern system for superior performance, it could be infeasible for some of the public council libraries and/or primary/high schools to purchase and maintain an existing market product to meet their ever-increasing needs. For those libraries, updating and improving the current information systems using open source software, through collaboration with universities, could provide a better solution. This Master Degree project is proposed to address such a challenge. Apart from such practical motivations, this project also possesses theoretic significance. The algorithms to be developed provide not only a practical solution for library catalogue systems but also a novel methodology applicable to database management system designing with respect to speedy and user-friendly information retrieval. The proposed web-based library system involves client/server architecture with multiple tiers. For performance enhancement in terms of searching speed and error tolerance, two key techniques have been employed: soundexing and adaptive caching. As soundexing is a hashing system with one soundex corresponding many words, a soundex search may bring about irrelevant results and thus reduce the precision of the search. It is just this limitation that has restricted the application of soundexing techniques in general information systems. Some measures have been investigated in our project to ameliorate this limitation, such as to increase the length of the soundex codes, or to use the Metaphone, a phonetic algorithm to produce variable length keys. For database cache, query normalization is adopted to reduce the redundancies existing in the cache and to increase the hitting rate. While there is still room for further improvement of the developed library catalogue system, the testing results are encouraging and meet the expectations of the project.

Silveira, Renata Rizzo.

As the spread of mobile devices continues, one area of publishing risks being left behind the technology. Museum catalogues have always been a distinct category of publishing, and were slow to be successfully and widely shifted to a digital format. Now, a growing number of institutions are looking to take advantage of the mobile revolution, the mobile user is also becoming more attuned to what their technology can offer. Simply rendering a publication or object in two-dimensional digital format is no longer sufficient throwing a challenge to the institution – how to preserve their identity and character. In a time when it is becoming easier and easier to self-publish into the digital realm; as witnessed by social content, the rise of the e-book and the decentralization of content, what elements concern specifically to museum catalogues in this space? This work presents a selection suggestions applicable specifically to museum catalogues so they can leverage the emerging technologies and go beyond the printed versions, without losing touch with the artist, the exhibition and the institution. Furthermore, there is an indication of the best multimedia elements that can be added to these catalogues in order to aggregate content and extend the visitor experience.

Dawson, Sian. « A lost legacy : a critical assessment and catalogue of the illustrated work of Ernest Aris : Alfred Ernest Walter George Aris (22 April, 1882-1963) children's author, illustrator and commercial artist ». Thesis, Cardiff University, 2011. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/19515/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Ernest Alfred Walter George Aris FZS, SGA, (1882-1963) was born in Islington and moved to Bradford where he spent his formative years and attained a diploma at the Bradford Technical College of Fine Art in 1900. Aris was a professionally trained commercial artist, author, and prolific illustrator of 170 children’s and natural history books. He also illustrated over 250 books for other authors, including Enid Blyton, Beatrix Potter, and May Byron, as well as contributing to a number of leading periodicals, magazines and newspapers. Aris was not a member of any of the active artists’ clubs or societies and was possibly shunned by his contemporaries and peers, who considered him unoriginal and an unscrupulous opportunist. Volume I of this thesis seeks to examine these suggestions and assesses why Aris’s name, despite his significant output, has remained relatively anonymous and why much of his legacy appears to have been unidentified, overlooked or forgotten. Chapter 1 discusses the historical influences of anthropomorphism on Aris’s style and those of his immediate predecessors. I have categorised Aris’s books into three periods for this appraisal and examined his technical attributes and qualities, together with his trademark features and characteristics, with the purpose of identifying what makes Aris’s creative design instantly recognisable and his output of illustration so distinctive. Chapter 2 discusses Aris’s relationship with the children’s author and illustrator, Beatrix Potter. Aris holds a unique place in history in that he was commissioned by Beatrix Potter to provide illustrations for her book and was the only artist with whom she seriously contemplated a professional working partnership (1916). However, Frederick Warne and Beatrix Potter later accused Aris of plagiarism and of exploiting any opportunity to achieve a commercial advantage. There is an argument to suggest that Aris’s affiliation with Potter and the allegations of plagiarism had a significant impact on his long term reputation and was possibly the reason for adopting the pseudonym Robin A. Hood. Chapter 3 examines the creative scope and features of Aris’s prestigious commercial partnerships. These start from the beginning of his professional career at the turn of the twentieth century, which coincided with the technical development and advancement of the colour picture postcard. Aris was at the forefront of this revolution, designing several series of comic and humorous postcards for leading printers that are now associated with and representative of a bygone era. In 1915 Aris was commissioned to design six tram posters, which were selected by Frank Pick at London Transport, as part of the National Collection of Posters. Pick single handedly revolutionised poster art in Britain and was responsible for establishing the national collection, where these posters now reside and have remained forgotten and out of sight for the last century. In the 1920s the trend for collecting novelty cigarette cards enabled Aris to produce a number of outstanding natural history designs as well as the infamous Frisky series, where his mischievous sense of humour is much evident in his trademark characters. Perhaps Aris’s final and greatest legacy, however, lies in the legendary Cococubs campaign for Bournville Children’s Cocoa, which was described as ‘one of the cleverest publicity schemes of the year.’1 The success of the advertising campaign meant demand outstripped supply of the product, as youngsters eagerly sought the ‘free toy in every tin’ promotional figurines that Aris designed (1934-1936). Volume II of this thesis comprises of a unique catalogue of Aris’s creative output over fifty years and spans a range of commercial fields of art. The catalogue is divided into four parts. Part one consists of Aris’s literary publications, with a detailed bibliographic record and image of the cover of each book that he wrote and illustrated under his own name and pseudonyms, as well as prominent books Aris illustrated for other eminent authors and a compendium list of books Aris illustrated for authors and other publications. Part two is a record of Aris’s commercial work, including the early series of pictorial postcards that he completed for leading quality publishers at the start of his career (1904-1909) and the six pictorial natural history posters, which Aris was commissioned to undertake for the London Transport tram system (1915). Part three comprises of Aris’s collectables and contains the four unique series of cigarette cards that Aris designed for leading tobacco manufacturers (issued 1929-1935). Part four includes a comprehensive description of each of the limited editions and subtle colour variants of the Cococub lead figurines inserted into Bournville Children’s Cocoa (1934-1936). The aim of the thesis is to justify why I believe Aris deserves further merit for his contribution within the field of illustration and commercial artwork. I have sought to highlight the factors that make his contribution and the success of his creative designs within these different fields so significant. 1 The Grocery and the Provision Merchant Journal, November 1934, p. 276.

Rennie, Paul. « An investigation into the design, production and display contexts of industrial safety posters produced by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents during WW2 and a catalogue of posters ». Thesis, University of the Arts London, 2005. http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/5661/.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The industrial safety posters produced by Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) during WW2 are evidence of a politically progressive, socially engaged and mass-produced graphic communication in Britain. These characteristics allow the RoSPA posters to qualify, by Walter Benjamin’s criteria, as exemplars of Modernist cultural production in the age of mechanical reproduction. The emergence of these images, within the unlikely context of war, is evidence of the social change identified by George Orwell as a necessary condition of victory. Furthermore, the presence of this material, within an English context, counters the prevailing orthodoxy of an English resistance to Modernism. The thesis describes the administrative and technical determinants of the posters, as indicated by the structure of RoSPA, the personalities behind the campaign and the technical expertise of the printers; Loxley Brothers of Sheffield. Quaker and Nonconformist antecedents are revealed to define the values of both administration and printers. The thesis explores the RoSPA posters’ use of Surrealist techniques and iconography and also their appeal to a wider and international Left community. The address of the RoSPA posters to the neophyte industrial worker offers the opportunity, exemplified by the special case of women workers, to project an “imagined community” beyond the normal tribal and class distinctions of British society through “Social Vision.” The RoSPA posters make explicit a connection, within English Modernism, between community, technology, progress and dissent. A catalogue of posters is appended to the thesis. The RoSPA posters reaffirm the progressive, emancipatory and radical quality of the popular experience of the Home-Front in Britain during WW2. The social changes, precipitated by the circumstances of war, of which the RoSPA posters are a manifestation, alter the role of graphic designer in relationship to community through an embrace of technology. The concept of graphic authorship is, in consequence, irrevocably changed.

Crane, Keith Lee. « Khwaam Jam : Memory ». Digital Archive @ GSU, 2009. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/art_design_theses/55.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Khwaam Jam is an introspective installation of works that explore the perceptions of identity based on memory. Created through the exploration of my past and present, the works of Khwaam Jam utilize the principles and techniques of textile design and production while involving mixed media and new materials in a site-specific installation. This installation is intended to represent my memory on a large scale. The hanging pieces are the focal point of the exhibition and are the physical manifestation of my perception of the categorization and storage of my memories. Memories are the vessels through which we create our identity. An individual’s identity is not only created from the personal experiences of the individual, but also from the experiences of those linked to the individual, whether on an intimate or social level. This overlap of memories is what connects us and helps create both individual and social identities through a series of shared memories.

Smith, Liam Arthur. « Instruments of Memory : The Architect as Archivist ». Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/25285.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
The mental space in which the architect formulates, tests, and cultivates an idea is deformed by memory, so that nothing projected into this space is bereft of association. However, neither is this space constrained by physical reality, allowing the architect a certain freedom to visualize the totality of an object and the world in which it is projected, simultaneously and in suspension: a space between memory and imagination. Memories and experiences layer richness upon this inner world and form the context for its manifestation; its realization. The deliberate and conscientious curation of this inner world-- the architect as archivist of memory and experience-- is an essential practice for the development of the architect and the worlds in which they operate.

Wan, Connie. « Samuel Lines and sons : rediscovering Birmingham's artistic dynasty 1794-1898 through works on paper at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists : Volume 1, Text ; Volume 2, Catalogue ; Volume 3, Illustrations ». Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2012. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/3645/.

Résumé :
This thesis is the first academic study of nineteenth-century artist and drawing master Samuel Lines (1778-1863) and his five sons: Henry Harris Lines (1800-1889), William Rostill Lines (1802-1846), Samuel Rostill Lines (1804-1833), Edward Ashcroft Lines (1807-1875) and Frederick Thomas Lines (1809-1898). The thesis, with its catalogue, has been a result of a collaborative study focusing on a collection of works on paper by the sons of Samuel Lines, from the Permanent Collection of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA). Both the thesis and catalogue aim to re-instate the family’s position as one of Birmingham’s most prominent and distinguished artistic dynasties. The thesis is divided into three chapters and includes a complete and comprehensive catalogue of 56 works on paper by the Lines family in the RBSA Permanent Collection. The catalogue also includes discursive information on the family’s careers otherwise not mentioned in the main thesis itself. The first chapter explores the family’s role in the establishment of the Birmingham Society of Arts (later the RBSA). It also explores the influence of art institutions and industry on the production of the fine and manufactured arts in Birmingham during the nineteenth century. The second chapter discusses the Lines family’s landscape imagery, in relation to prevailing landscape aesthetics and the physically changing landscape of the Midlands. Henry Harris Lines is the main focus of the last chapter which reveals the extent of his skills as archaeologist, antiquarian and artist.

The Master thesis focuses on the application of Information Systems in the field of Library and Information Science.  Within the context of organizational learning, a collaborative user-centered approach is used to produce desired system characteristics and future research suggestions. More specifically, this research study explores the library users’ and academic librarians’ perceptions of the current library discovery and access services as mediated through the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) of the Academic Library of the School of Philosophy at Athens University in Greece. Additionally, it explores their desired characteristics for the ‘public facing’ Integrated Library System (ILS), of which the OPAC constitutes a module, in order to generate recommendations that guide the Academic Library staff members’ collaborative design of a more user-centered library information system. The study is built upon the systems thinking framework of Checkland’s Soft Systems Methodology (SSM). Applied theories and design processes guide research processes aimed at advancing both inclusive social learning and system improvements.

For more than ten years, the author has been taking part to the catalogue raisonné of Henri Michaux. He uses this field experience to redescribe, through a new light, the experience of seeing (how to look at a Michaux drawing ?), and the learning it implies. Various methods are mobilized to explicit the ecology of an artwork and its modes of functionning : poetics, aesthetics, cognitive sciences, science studies, anthropology of writing, ethnométhodology. Back and forth are constantly made between texts, paintings, and recording situations of the drawings in the context of the catalogue raisonné (various types of « regardement »). Concrete and everyday situations, and the methodological problems they generate, are the starting points of the inquiry, et constitute the empirical ground for the theoretical construct which follows. Theory is thus, here, never considered as an outside model, that one would apply on a matter, it is a mode of reconception, from the inside, of a perception making sailient, from the better perspective, the relevant features of an ecosystem. The genuine question « how to look at a Michaux drawing ? » (chapter I) is unfold on different levels. First, by using texts and drawings ressources - « What is a form ? » (chapter II), « A theory of Image » (chapter III), « Space » (chapter IV). Then, by studying different types of usually mobilized seeing – « Constructed visions » (chapter V) – and different methodologies of classification – « Notion of series » (chapter VI)

This thesis in structural bioinformatics and chemoinformatics concentrates on the optimization of the therapeutics compounds identification process. It relies on the three main components of the chemical compounds virtual screening: preparation of a computational version of the chemical library to be screened; identification of novel active compounds using chemical similarity with respect to known active molecules (LBVS); and identification of novel active compounds using the 3D structure of the target binding site (SBVS). This work implied: to develop a computer program (MED-3DMC) that generates conformation ensembles of small molecules ; then to create a LBVS program (MED-SuMoLig) that can screen thousands of chemical compounds using their pharmaco-topological profile; and finally to use a hierarchical SBVS procedure to identify novel inhibitors for protein-membrane interaction using the coagulation factor Va as a proof of concept

Léon Bonnat (1833-1922) received artistic training in Spain, then in the Parisian studio of the painter Léon Cogniet, and finally in Rome. His early large religious pictures quickly brought him success, fame, and State commissions, while his Italian and Orientalist genres scenes were purchased by private patrons. Around the middle of the 1870s he made a definitive turn toward portrait painting that became immensely successful and made him, according to his contemporaries, one of the greatest portraitists of the wealthy and ruling class in France or abroad, particularly in the United States, before the First World War. He practiced in this genre until the end of his life, leaving behind - except for the portraits of his artist friends and members of his family - an exceptional gallery of personalities of the time, primarily aristocrats, politicians, and French and foreign grands bourgeois, including several iconic works that mark the collective memory

Texte intégral
Résumé :
Research shows children in an online environment often search by browsing, which relies heavily on recognition and content knowledge, so catalog systems for children must use effective symbols or pictorial representations, which correspond with children's own cognitive schema and level of recognition knowledge. This study was designed to look at the success of young children (ages 5 to 8) in searching 3 online public library catalogs designed for them, and it focused specifically on the pictorial representations and text descriptors used in the systems' browsing hierarchy. The research sought answer whether young children (ages 5 to 8) are really poor searchers because of cognitive development and lack of technology skills or if system design is the major reason for poor search results; i.e., Do current children's online catalog designs function in a manner that is compatible with information seeking by children? Although these results can not be generalized, this study indicates that there was a disconnect between the cognitive abilities of young users and catalog design. The study looked at search success on the 3 catalogs in relation to the catalog characteristics and individual user characteristics and makes 3 significant contributions to the field of library and information science. The first contribution is the modification of an existing model posed by Cooper and O'Connor and modified by Abbas (2002). The second significant contribution is the proposal of a new model, Creel's second best choice (SBC) model, that addresses the cognitive gap and design flaws that impact the choices participants made. The third significant contribution is that this study addresses and fills a gap in the literature.

Résumé :
In model-driven development (MDD), domain-specific modeling languages (DSMLs) act as a communication vehicle for aligning the requirements of domain experts with the needs of software engineers. With the rise of the UML as a de facto standard, UML/MOF-based DSMLs are now widely used for MDD. This paper documents design decisions collected from 90 UML/MOF-based DSML projects. These recurring design decisions were gained, on the one hand, by performing a systematic literature review (SLR) on the development of UML/MOF-based DSMLs. Via the SLR, we retrieved 80 related DSML projects for review. On the other hand, we collected decisions from developing ten DSML projects by ourselves. The design decisions are presented in the form of reusable decision records, with each decision record corresponding to a decision point in DSML development processes. Furthermore, we also report on frequently observed (combinations of) decision options as well as on associations between options which may occur within a single decision point or between two decision points. This collection of decision-record documents targets decision makers in DSML development (e.g., DSML engineers, software architects, domain experts). (authors' abstract)

Résumé :
Founded on the premise that the existing literature on Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel does not give a comprehensive, balanced and objective survey of the dress designs produced by the house from 1916-1929, the thesis ‘Reviewing Chanel’ provides a catalogue raisonné of the designs shown in British and French Vogue during this period. This representative sample of Chanel’s work facilitates the very necessary and overdue re-assessment of Chanel’s early career and contribution to twentieth century fashion. Part One of the Introduction includes a review of the existing literature on Chanel and explains the rationale behind the production of a catalogue of the dress designs reproduced in British and French Vogue. Part Two serves as the introduction to the twenty-eight essays which outline the principal developments in each of the dress design collections presented by the house between 1916-1929. Each essay provides an analytical summary of the key themes and developments of the collection and relates Chanel’s work to that of the other leading houses in Paris during this period.

This first "catalogue raisonné" of the 16th-17th century's Veronese’s school's drawings preserved at the louvre, describes and comments 201 works (originals and copies), moreover put back together in their historical, social, cultural and artistic context. Numerous are unpublished and taken out from anonymous Italian’s portfolios. 177 are unequally distributed among twenty artists : Paolo Farinati, the best represented (100 drawings, including his workshop), Paolo Veronese, only through his artistic training in Verona, Battista and Marco del Moro, Domenico and Felice Brusasorci, Zelotti, Ottino, Ridolfi, Turchi, Bassetti. . . , to cite only the most known. The catalogue does check off works still anonymous (25) and explain in detail historical records of the collection. It also stresses on changes of classifications and discoveries which allow to clarify some figures of drawers badly known, and give a new dimension at the louvre's Veronese’s collection introducing names until now absent from its inventories. This study is presented in three volumes: introduction's texts and bibliography, catalogue and index, illustrations. All the drawings of the catalogue are reproduced in the third volume

Robert Nanteuil, engraver, draughtsman and pastel painter, was a pupil of Nicolas Regnesson at Reims circa 1643-1645 and went to Paris where he settled down around 1647. At that time Nanteuil received valuable guidance from the Flemish painter Philippe de Champaigne whose influence is deeply felt in his portraits and met the printmaker Abraham Bosse who trained him in the technique of burin engraving. Then he developed his own method and gained official recognition in 1658 : Louis XIV appointed him designer and engraver. Nanteuil’s subjects involved royalty and high-ranking members of society. A portrait drawing by Nanteuil was often intended as a preparatory study for an engraving made to adorn the cover of a doctoral thesis dedicated to the sitter or to illustrate a book. Robert Nanteuil was the earliest artist to have used pastel in a painterly manner to cover the entirety of a sheet of paper. He had used sticks of coloured paste to heighten their drawings as nobody else before him in the seventeenth-century French school : he had developed pastel into an independent medium of draughtsmanship. Robert Nanteuil brought into the realm of official painted portraiture the ease and charm which were formerly found only in the drawn portraiture of sixteenth-century and early seventeenth-century artists such as Clouet and Dumonstier. The thesis consist of a large study on Nanteuil’s career and include a complete analysis of his artistic manner as draughtsman and pastel painter with a “catalogue raisonné” of his works on paper

Résumé :
Purpose: A fear of change has been in the Swedish construction industry. Errors and delays are seen as obstacles to development in the construction industry. Industrial construction means more automated manufacturing, which places higher demands on the design. The design stage is the bottleneck for industrial construction with 2D technology. BIM with its information management provides increased coordination, resulting in a number of improvements. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze how the design of small house manufacturers is transformed by a transition to BIM from 2D technology. Method: In order to respond to the goal, the thesis has been based on a case study with the data collection methods observation, experiment and focus group. With observations, students have studied how design with 2D technology looks today for small house manufacturers. The experiment provided an in-depth analysis of how design with BIM can be used. In order to analyze how BIM changes the design, focus group from the company has been used. Findings: The thesis shows that design with 2D technology for small house manufacturers works but that a number of improvements can be made. With BIM, small house manufacturers can streamline their design in time and dependency. BIM improves total design time, but also for each task. BIM helps the information to be handled and used more easily, and that information loss is reduced. Implications: Results show that BIM can streamline the entire design process and is applicable to the small house industry. The workload and time are positively affected by the use of BIM. Each individual planner benefits from BIM in terms of time and addiction. As the design process is not changed but only streamlined, a possible transition becomes easier. Limitations: This thesis is limited to design for small house manufacturers who use prefabrication.

My work is a symptom of my ongoing quest to achieve immortality. I perpetually attempt to make permanent the traces we leave behind and the impressions we make upon each other. I use the body to portray boundaries – between the skin and the heart, comfort and disquiet, holding and letting go. The objects I make serve both as an agent for physical contact and as the commemoration of an ephemeral interaction. I create personal fossils, revealing the interstices formed when two bodies come into contact with one another. I use materials that reference endurance and longevity to record transient spaces whose edges continuously shift and whose membranes are particularly tenuous. This work is an ongoing catalog of the people in my life and my persistent efforts to hold on to those fleeting connections.

Initiated in 1945 and reaching 451 numbers at the end of 1990, the graphic work of Olivier Debré (born in 1920) has always seeked a "living sign" which has taken two different ways, a "figure sign" (since the end of the 40') and a "landscape sign" (since the beginning of the 60'). In Debré's work, print is characterized by material effects (aquatint) and colour variations (lithography) ; print is also a meeting place with poets and writers (more than 20 illustrated books).

FOSSI, ELISABETTA. « FAR : Flexibility in Airport ARchitectural design ». Doctoral thesis, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2158/1087280.

Résumé :
The research deals with project design management and sustainability; it refers to the discipline of Technology of Architecture. Airport terminals are characterized by technical requirements of a building; whereas they also are an infrastructure. The very first requirement in airport terminal design is to respond to demand for passenger air transport. Thus, they must accommodate passenger traffic, by ensuring an adequate capacity. But the real progression trend of future traffic demand is not certain; it is only possible to issue a forecast while bearing in mind that the future will possibly differ from projections of it. Consequently an airport passenger terminal has to respond to change, in order to accommodate passengers in the number and with the level of service required. It has to accommodate such changing travel demand. But how to face uncertainty? How does an airport terminal effectively respond to the main requirement - which is to accommodate and process passengers - through a proper, correct and effective design over its lifecycle? Recent research developments suggest answers to uncertainty by adopting design procedures for flexibility in building lifecycles. Embracing change means to face uncertainty and giving the right inputs to design processes. In particular operative flexibility is required as an input to design, enable and make possible product and environmental flexibilities, as a result. Interesting approach and solution enabling flexibility as a design input are suggested by the recent research developments in life cycle costing, going beyond its usual use as a purely economic tool. The experimental methodology of the Design Catalogue 1has been set up by an American research team in this framework applied to a parking garage. The evaluation method supports the designer with forecasting possible future scenarios for the development of the building and with using this information as input to the design process. The research aimes at adapting this method as a tool for the planning phase of an airport terminal, focusing on the core aspects concerning the tailoring. Indeed at first, the general Catalogue methodology has been embedded within the general layout of a design process of an airport terminal. Then, the model for the evaluation of economic performance in the lifecycle, core of the methodology, has been tailored to one specific airport terminal. In the end, through a data collection on field and one iteration of the model, the algorithms were embedded in an automatized spreadsheet, as a tool for the pre-briefing (planning) phase. At the end of the research, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats have been identified and highlighted. The discussion of possible future developments of the work involves e.g.: the portability to other terminal cases; more tests for the validation of the model tailored; guidelines for the application of the results to other cases; exploration of the full decision support level for the methodology; tool upgrading concerning above all sheet C1; guidelines for the use of the tool. Scientific dissemination of the partial results was managed while the research work was ongoing.

Shrivastava, Abhishek Kumar. « Listing Unique Fractional Factorial Designs ». 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/ETD-TAMU-2009-12-7345.

Résumé :
Fractional factorial designs are a popular choice in designing experiments for studying the effects of multiple factors simultaneously. The first step in planning an experiment is the selection of an appropriate fractional factorial design. An appro- priate design is one that has the statistical properties of interest of the experimenter and has a small number of runs. This requires that a catalog of candidate designs be available (or be possible to generate) for searching for the "good" design. In the attempt to generate the catalog of candidate designs, the problem of design isomor- phism must be addressed. Two designs are isomorphic to each other if one can be obtained from the other by some relabeling of factor labels, level labels of each factor and reordering of runs. Clearly, two isomorphic designs are statistically equivalent. Design catalogs should therefore contain only designs unique up to isomorphism. There are two computational challenges in generating such catalogs. Firstly, testing two designs for isomorphism is computationally hard due to the large number of possible relabelings, and, secondly, the number of designs increases very rapidly with the number of factors and run-size, making it impractical to compare all designs for isomorphism. In this dissertation we present a new approach for tackling both these challenging problems. We propose graph models for representing designs and use this relationship to develop efficient algorithms. We provide a new efficient iso- morphism check by modeling the fractional factorial design isomorphism problem as graph isomorphism problem. For generating the design catalogs efficiently we extend a result in graph isomorphism literature to improve the existing sequential design catalog generation algorithm. The potential of the proposed methods is reflected in the results. For 2-level regular fractional factorial designs, we could generate complete design catalogs of run sizes up to 4096 runs, while the largest designs generated in literature are 512 run designs. Moreover, compared to the next best algorithms, the computation times for our algorithm are 98% lesser in most cases. Further, the generic nature of the algorithms makes them widely applicable to a large class of designs. We give details of graph models and prove the results for two classes of designs, namely, 2-level regular fractional factorial designs and 2-level regular fractional factorial split-plot designs, and provide discussions for extensions, with graph models, for more general classes of designs.

With the development of E-commerce, the E-catalog plays as a medium role between buyers and sellers. Sellers could show products information completely to their customers and provide them with purchasing reference through E-catalog. However, E-catalog not only presents product information but also offers different services to customers. This research proposes a personalized E-catalog to enhance users' purchase intention and promote their satisfaction through individualized services. This study adopts questionnaire survey to obtain data. Three hundred and four valid questionnaires are used for statistical analysis, including factor analysis, t-test, correlation analysis, and structural equation model. The study draws the following conclusions: (1) The components comprise personalized E-catalog are interactive and preference mechanisms. (2) The effectiveness of personalized E-catalog could be measured by playfulness, usability, and navigation efficiency. (3) Whether respondents have the experience to use E-catalog or not, there are no significant differences on their perceptions of personalized E-catalog design and effectiveness measurement. (4) The components comprise personalized E-catalog have positive relationship with E-catalog effectiveness. In order to represent the personalized product information in E-catalog, this research reforms a personalized method based on product features. First, the personalized E-catalog system accumulates users’ transaction history and navigation behavior records. Second, the system calculates users’ preference of product features which comprises the user profile. Third, it generates the possible products that users may be most interested in by matching and computing the similarity level s between products profiles and customer profile. Finally, it displays the products that may attract users in E-catalogs and furthermore achieve the goal of E-catalog personalization.

Electronic catalogs provide the services of product search and catalog browsing. With the growth of virtual stores and product information on the Internet, it is not easy to get desired product information efficiently. The electronic broker can help customers to navigate, search, and transact products by the functions of information filtering, product searching and electronic catalog. With effective interoperability, XML is emerging as an important meta-language in electronic commerce. Our work applies the characteristics of XML to construct a three-level metadata architecture. The metadata is able to facilitate resource-discovery and format translation, and to provide information about attributes of a product category. The objective of this work is to develop an XML based personalized electronic catalog. It provides personalized user profile, and structured query based on the attributes of each product. The proposed system architecture is composed of multiple agents. Each agent communicates and cooperates with each other to efficiently search heterogeneous product information from various virtual stores on the Internet. This system can make customers browse and search products on the Internet more conveniently.

With the soaring industrial competition, small/medium enterprises face not only the competition between rivals but the monopoly of the rising channel agents. Under such keenly competitive circumstances, it is a prior issue for the entrepreneurs to pursue the everlasting operation of their enterprises. Providing industries with incentive momentum, the development of the World Wide Web implies upgrade, progress, and definitely a new era of commercial revolution. The rise of E-commerce has sparked off prospects for the small/medium enterprises; it is also the driving force of the recently prosperous E-enterprises. The specific aim of this thesis is to study the application of web multimedia technology, displaying electronic catalogues through various methods and techniques, as well as boosting up the efficiency of the website by connection to a database management system. Besides, the website uses multimedia online catalogues to attract the customers in a more realistic way. This multimedia E-commerce system, which launches web-marketing actions by presenting physical items into virtual reality, can establish a new channel market for the small/medium enterprises.

AbstractAs product life cycle becomes shorter, the pace of product design is forced to be faster.Product design employing concurrent engineering methodology and techniques canmake the design process more efficient. Meanwhile industrial products often use catalog parts in order to shorten product development time and to reduce product cost , This paper describes the design and implementation of a computer network-based catalog parts to support distributed and collaborative design. The developed system consists of four major modules: the catalog database, the distributed query module, the product data model module, and the product geometric model construction module. The catalog database provides part catalogs in electronic form that contains information of standard parts such as engineering data sheet and drawings of parts. The distributed query module provides interfaces for remote access to the catalog database through the Internet. Product information in the form of ISO 10303 STEP data model of selected parts are generated and downloaded to the user through the product data model module. Geometric models of user selected parts, generated by the geometric model construction module, are also supported in the system. This provides a seamless solution for merging catalog parts into CAD/CAM base distributed design and manufacturing. Examples of constructing catalog database and its application for mechanical parts are also illustrated and discussed.

In the age of e-business, electronic marketplace provides a virtual trading place where demand and supply are more visible and trading efficiency is improved due to better liquidity. In this thesis, the author presents a system architecture for utilizing catalog-search agents to offer purchasing services through e-marketplaces. Catalog-searching services have been identified as one of basic services since e-marketplaces emerge as alternatives to traditional trading channels. Mobile agents, or software agents serving the purchasing function, have been identified as an approach to design e-procurement systems. In this thesis, the author applies the idea of mobile agents to catalog searching and presents a broad and innovative view of the system. In the system, XML is introduced as a standard for information exchange. Product information in catalog databases is designed to comply with the standard. As a result, asynchronous operations are feasible and extra effort to prevent inconsistency between local and remote programs can be reduced. The XML standards enable mobile agents to access catalogs on different platforms. The architecture presented can be classified as a type of three tiers. Examples are given to illustrate the functioning of this architecture. The benefits of this design include processing efficiency, lower utilization of resources, and low data transformation cost.
