Résumé :
The interface of a zinc-terminated polar zinc oxide surface (0002) with a series of chemisorbed fluorinated benzylphosphonic acids has been studied using density functional theory. The calculations indicate that there is a substantial change in the binding energies and work function modification depending on the binding motif. The results also indicate that there is a pronounced difference in the magnitude and trends of the factors determining the total change in work function. The oxygen core-level binding shifts have been calculated and compared to available experimental data.

Résumé :
In this thesis, we first present a brief overview of various theoretical approaches used to examine the electronic structure of defects in GaN. Using the recently developed hybrid density functional theory (HSE06) along with the experimental measurements, we propose a new explanation of the nature of the yellow luminescence band in carbon-doped GaN. We conduct a systematic study of electronic and optical properties of defects (Carbon, Oxygen, Silicon related) that are candidates for the origin of yellow luminescence. We show that the CN-ON complex is significantly more likely to form compared to isolated carbon configurations. In contrast to the properties of the isolated carbon acceptor, calculated defect levels and optical transitions involving deep level of the CN-ON complex agree quite well with our thermal luminescence quenching data as well as with the experimentally measured C-doped GaN luminescence spectra. Hence, the CN-ON complex, rather than isolated C impurity, is more likely to resolve a long-standing problem of the yellow luminescence in GaN.

Résumé :
Microcirculation has become a key factor for the study and assessment of tissue perfusion and oxygenation. Detection and assessment of the microvasculature using videomicroscopy from the oral mucosa provides a metric on the density of blood vessels in each single frame. Information pertaining to the density of these microvessels within a field of view can be used to quantitatively monitor and assess the changes occurring in tissue oxygenation and perfusion over time. Automated analysis of this information can be used for real-time diagnostic and therapeutic planning of a number of clinical applications including resuscitation. The objective of this study is to design an automated image processing system to segment microvessels, estimate the density of blood vessels in video recordings, and identify the distribution of blood flow. The proposed algorithm consists of two main stages: video processing and image segmentation. The first step of video processing is stabilization. In the video stabilization step, block matching is applied to the video frames. Similarity is measured by cross-correlation coefficients. The main technique used in the segmentation step is multi-thresholding and pixel verification based on calculated geometric and contrast parameters. Segmentation results and differences of video frames are then used to identify the capillaries with blood flow. After categorizing blood vessels as active or passive, according to the amount of blood flow, quantitative measures identifying microcirculation are calculated. The algorithm is applied to the videos obtained using Microscan Side-stream Dark Field (SDF) imaging technique captured from healthy and critically ill humans/animals. Segmentation results were compared and validated using a blind detailed inspection by experts who used a commercial semi-automated image analysis software program, AVA (Automated Vascular Analysis). The algorithm was found to extract approximately 97% of functionally active capillaries and blood vessels in every frame. The aim of this study is to eliminate the human interaction, increase accuracy and reduce the computation time. The proposed method is an entirely automated process that can perform stabilization, pre-processing, segmentation, and microvessel identification without human intervention. The method may allow for assessment of microcirculatory abnormalities occurring in critically ill and injured patients including close to real-time determination of the adequacy of resuscitation.

Résumé :
Comprehensive statistical models for non-normally distributed cancerous tumor sizes are of prime importance in epidemiological studies, whereas a long term forecasting models can facilitate in reducing complications and uncertainties of medical progress. The statistical forecasting models are critical for a better understanding of the disease and supply appropriate treatments. In addition such a model can be used for the allocations of budgets, planning, control and evaluations of ongoing efforts of prevention and early detection of the diseases. In the present study, we investigate the effects of age, demography, and race on primary brain tumor sizes using quantile regression methods to obtain a better understanding of the malignant brain tumor sizes. The study reveals that the effects of risk factors together with the probability distributions of the malignant brain tumor sizes, and plays significant role in understanding the rate of change of tumor sizes. The data that our analysis and modeling is based on was obtained from Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program of the United States. We also analyze the discretely observed brain cancer mortality rates using functional data analysis models, a novel approach in modeling time series data, to obtain more accurate and relevant forecast of the mortality rates for the US. We relate the cancer registries, race, age, and gender to age-adjusted brain cancer mortality rates and compare the variations of these rates during the period of the study that data was collected. Finally, in the present study we have developed effective statistical model for heterogenous and high dimensional data that forecast the hazard rates with high degree of accuracy, that will be very helpful to address subject health problems at present and in the future.

Résumé :
High density electroencephalographic (EEG) measures were used to assess the effects of acute delta 9-tetrahyrdrocannabidol (THC) administration on extinction of conditioned fear responses. Fear conditioning was initiated using a differential classical conditioning paradigm that paired an aversive unconditioned stimulus (shock) with a signaling stimulus (CS+), whereas another stimulus served as a safety signal (CS-). Evoked potentials, induced event-related spectral perturbations (ERSP), and associated intertrial coherence (ITC) measures were used to quantify the acquisition and extinction of conditioned fear responses. Participants (N = 10 males) exhibited conditioning to the CS+ across fear acquisition training, as reflected by greater late positive (posterior sites) and late negative (anterior sites) potential amplitude to the CS+ relative to the CS-. Acute administration of THC facilitated extinction of the conditioned response to the CS+ relative to placebo, as reflected by greater LPP and LNP amplitude to the CS+ relative to the CS- in the placebo, but not THC condition. ERSP analyses suggest the lack of difference between CS+ and CS- ERP amplitude may be partially explained by a shifting of attention from external stimuli to internal processing in the THC condition. However, relative to placebo, THC administration also increased the amplitude of some measures of the conditioned response (LNP) to the CS-, suggesting a generalization of fear or lack of discrimination in this condition.

Résumé :
AbstractIn this talk, based on [1], we propose a spatio-temporal analysis of daily death counts in Italy, collected by ISTAT (Italian Statistical Institute), in Italian provinces and municipalities. While in [1] the focus was on the elderly class (70+ years old), we here focus on the middle class (50–69 years old), carrying out analogous analyses and comparative observations. We analyse historical provincial data starting from 2011 up to 2020, year in which the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on the overall death process are assessed and analysed. The cornerstone of our analysis pipeline is a novel functional compositional representation for the death counts during each calendar year: specifically, we work with mortality densities over the calendar year, embedding them in the Bayes space B2 of probability density functions. This Hilbert space embedding allows for the formulation of functional linear models, which are used to split each yearly realization of the mortality density process in a predictable and an unpredictable component, based on the mortality in previous years. The unpredictable components of the mortality density are then spatially analysed in the framework of Object Oriented Spatial Statistics. Via spatial downscaling of the results obtained at the provincial level, we obtain smooth predictions at the fine scale of Italian municipalities; this also enable us to perform anomaly detection, identifying municipalities which behave unusually with respect to the surroundings.

Résumé :
Recent technological advances have eased the collection of big amounts of data in many research fields. In this scenario density estimation may represent an important source of information. One dimensional density functions represent a special case of functional data subject to the constraints to be non-negative and with a constant integral equal to one. Because of these constraints, a naive application of functional data analysis (FDA) methods may lead to non-valid results. To solve this problem, by means of an appropriate transformation, densities are embedded in the Hilbert space of square integrable functions where standard FDA methodologies can be applied.

Résumé :
Bayesian predictive synthesis (BPS) provides a method for combining multiple predictive distributions based on agent/expert opinion analysis theory and encompasses a range of existing density forecast pooling methods. The key ingredient in BPS is a “synthesis” function. This is typically specified parametrically as a dynamic linear regression. In this paper, we develop a nonparametric treatment of the synthesis function using regression trees. We show the advantages of our tree-based approach in two macroeconomic forecasting applications. The first uses density forecasts for GDP growth from the euro area’s Survey of Professional Forecasters. The second combines density forecasts of US inflation produced by many regression models involving different predictors. Both applications demonstrate the benefits – in terms of improved forecast accuracy and interpretability – of modeling the synthesis function nonparametrically.

Résumé :
Review question / Objective: Participants: experiment POI animal models; Interventions: human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells; Comparisons: POI animal models without hUCMSC therapy; Outcomes: estrous cycle situation, serum sex hormone level and ovarian follicle count; Studies: randomized controlled animal study; The aim of the review is to figure out whether hUCMSC can recover ovarian function in POI animal models. Condition being studied: Primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a syndrome characterized by reduced or absent ovarian function (hypogonadism) and elevated levels of gonadotropins, specifically luteinising hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Etiologies of POI are various. Genetic disorders, autoimmune diseases, iatrogenic injuries like chemotherapy and radiotherapy, and infectious diseases all contribute to the development of POI. Main manifestation of POI includes decreased ovarian function and infertility. Patients may suffer from menopausal symptoms, such as increased cardiovascular disease, decreased bone mineral density, vulvovaginal atrophy, psychological distress and so on. Current treatment of POI is limited. HRT mainly ameliorates symptoms while ART can achieve fertility in some patients but faces many challenges in clinical practice because it's hard to get satisfied oocytes. Stem cell therapy is proved to be efficient in recovering organ functions and hUCMSC is one of the easiest cell to obtain. So we think hUCMSC is promising in treating POI.

Résumé :
Oxygen uptake, CO2 production and respiratory quotient (RQ) of strawberry, raspberry and cherry were measured as functions of temperature and oxygen level. The effect of cultivar was studied in strawberry ('Honey' and 'Allstar'). The effect of harvest date was studied for raspberry. The lower O2 limit increased markedly with incraqsing temperature for all fruits studied. Red bell pepper O2 uptake was measured as a function of O2 at 20o C. Lowering the inpackage humidity using NaCl reduced decay of bell pepper sealed in low-density polyethylene packages when stored at 8o C. Analyses of a model developed for MA-packaged red bell pepper fruit demonstrated that when RQ was near one and when CO2 exceeded O2 permeability, transient CO2 levels increased to a maximum before dropping to steady-state levels. An isothermal model of O2, CO2 and water vapor exchange in MA packages was developed for red bell pepper and tested empirically. A comprehensive model was developed for small fruits that also incorporated water vapor and the effects of changing temperature. Variation in package O2 levels was measured and modeled as a function of variation in respiration and film permeability.

Gaglianone, Wagner Piazza, et Waldyr Dutra Areosa. Financial Conditions Indicator for Brazil. Inter-American Development Bank, août 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0011805.

Résumé :
This paper proposes a methodology for constructing a Financial Conditions Indicator (FCI) based on factor analysis and the approaches of Brave and Butters (2011) and Aramonte et al. (2013). A selected set of variables is used and their information content aggregated into a single index that summarizes the overall financial conditions of the economy. The approach is further employed to forecast economic activity. An empirical exercise for Brazil is provided to illustrate the methodology, in which a reduced-form equation is employed to point forecast the growth rate of the Brazilian economy. In addition, a quantile regression technique is used to construct density forecasts and generate probability density functions of future economic activity. Finally, a risk analysis is conducted within this set-up in order to compute conditional probabilities of the growth rate of the economy to be above/below a given scenario, which might be useful for both academics and policymakers’ concerns.

Lewis, Sherman, Emilio Grande et Ralph Robinson. The Mismeasurement of Mobility for Walkable Neighborhoods. Mineta Transportation Institute, novembre 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.31979/mti.2020.2060.

Résumé :
The major US household travel surveys do not ask the right questions to understand mobility in Walkable Neighborhoods. Yet few subjects can be more important for sustainability and real economic growth based on all things of value, including sustainability, affordability, and quality of life. Walkable Neighborhoods are a system of land use, transportation, and transportation pricing. They are areas with attractive walking distances of residential and local business land uses of sufficient density to support enough business and transit, with mobility comparable to suburbia and without owning an auto. Mobility is defined as the travel time typically spent to reach destinations outside the home, not trips among other destinations that are not related to the home base. A home round trip returns home the same day, a way of defining routine trips based on the home location. Trip times and purposes, taken together, constitute travel time budgets and add up to total travel time in the course of a day. Furthermore, for Walkable Neighborhoods, the analysis focuses on the trips most important for daily mobility. Mismeasurement consists of including trips that are not real trips to destinations outside the home, totaling 48 percent of trips. It includes purposes that are not short trips functional for walk times and mixing of different trips into single purposes, resulting in even less useful data. The surveys do not separate home round trips from other major trip types such as work round trips and overnight trips. The major household surveys collect vast amounts of information without insight into the data needed for neighborhood sustainability. The methodology of statistics gets in the way of using statistics for the deeper insights we need. Household travel surveys need to be reframed to provide the information needed to understand and improve Walkable Neighborhoods. This research makes progress on the issue, but mismeasurement prevents a better understanding of the issue.

Parkins et Leis. L51654 Spatial Densities of Stress-Corrosion Cracks in Line-Pipe Steels. Chantilly, Virginia : Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), avril 1992. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010367.

Texte intégral
Résumé :
There was a need to define the spatial density of stress-corrosion crack arrays that develop in operating gas-transmission pipelines and in laboratory test specimens of line-pipe steel, to improve understanding of the factors that control the density and provide data to test models of pipeline cracking. Within the broad definition of crack density are included the locations, numbers, lengths, depths, and degree of linkage of cracks. An analysis has been conducted of location, numbers, lengths, depths, and degree of linkage of stress-corrosion crack colonies in samples from the field and from laboratory tests. This has provided data to test any model of the cracking of pipelines. Thus, it is shown that crack densities are of the order of 5 cracks/mm of distance normal to the crack length direction and that the depths and lengths of cracks are distributed according to log normal and Weibull functions. During the growth stage of cracks in a colony, their spatial distribution is not random, because of the interaction of their associated stress fields. That interaction also results in the coalescence of cracks, an extremely important part of the overall growth process, and that interaction is defined quantitatively to provide further information to which modeling must aspire.
