Résumé :
Background: Research suggests that actuarial neuropsychological criteria improve the accuracy of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) diagnoses relative to conventional diagnostic methods. Objective: We sought to examine the utility of actuarial criteria relative to consensus diagnostic methods used in the National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Center (NACC) Uniform Data Set (UDS), and more broadly across the continuum of normal aging, MCI, and dementia. Methods: We compared rates of cognitively normal (CN), MCI, and dementia diagnoses at baseline using actuarial versus consensus diagnostic methods in 1524 individuals from the NACC UDS. Results: Approximately one-third (33.59%) of individuals diagnosed as CN and more than one-fifth (22.03%) diagnosed with dementia based on consensus methods, met actuarial criteria for MCI. Many participants diagnosed with MCI via consensus methods also appeared to represent possible diagnostic errors. Notably, the CNa/CNc group (i.e., participants diagnosed as CN based on both actuarial [a] and consensus [c] criteria) had a lower proportion of apolipoprotein E ɛ4 carriers than the MCIa/MCIc group, which in turn had a lower proportion of ɛ4 carriers than the dementia (Dem)a/Demc group. Proportions of ɛ4 carriers were comparable between the CNa/CNc and CNa/MCIc, MCIa/MCIc and MCIa/CNc, MCIa/MCIc and MCIa/Demc, and Dema/Demc and Dema/MCIc groups. These results were largely consistent with diagnostic agreement/discrepancy group comparisons on neuropsychological performance. Conclusion: The present results extend previous findings and suggest that actuarial neuropsychological criteria may enhance diagnostic accuracy relative to consensus methods, and across the wider continuum of normal aging, MCI, and dementia. Findings have implications for both clinical practice and research.

Résumé :
The sudden deterioration of the condition of linear infrastructure networks makes road management a complex task. Knowledge of the surface condition of the pavement is a requirement in order to estimate the causes of instabilities, select the appropriate action and identify all those sections that require urgent intervention. The mobile laser scanning (MLS) technique allows for a fast and safe diagnosis, thus making it possible to plan an early intervention program quickly and cost-effectively. This paper describes a methodology implemented with a twofold purpose: (i) the optimal definition, during the design phase, of the input parameters of the MLS survey (velocity of the vehicle and acquisition rate), defined through the study of the relationship between these parameters and the density of the scanned points and, therefore, with the resolution that allows the analysis of a certain type of pavement distress; (ii) the creation of a Digital Elevation Model with a curved abscissa (DEMc), specific for the analysis of road pavements. The field surveys made and the procedure developed allowed the velocity of the MLS to be associated with the resolution of the DEMc, and thus its capability to highlight distresses at different levels of severity. The creation of the road model is semiautomatic; the height value of each single node of the grid is estimated through spatial interpolation algorithms. Starting from experimental data, a few charts were created that relate the density of the point cloud to the variation of the acquisition rate, together with the minimum resolution. Depending on the type of distress analyzed, it is possible to infer the values to be respected of the parameters. In this way, it should be possible to draw up a few guidelines about MLS surveys addressing linear infrastructures focused on the optimization of the survey design, so as to identify strategies that can maximize benefits with the same available budget.

Résumé :
<p><em>Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is the starting point in the analysis performed to explain the deformation pattern changes from the Earth's surface. The estimated value of deformation based on point-wise GPS and InSAR data with a better spatial resolution must be defined in a reference frame system that reflects the phenomenon of deformation of the real physical world, e.g., orthometric height for the vertical component. Therefore, this study aims to provide alternative DEM models based on a suitable combination between the Global Geopotential Model of Earth Geopotential Model 2008 (EGM2008) and global terrain models, providing position changes with respect to the orthometric height. The alternative DEM models are (i) the global elevation model of ETOPO1 (DEM1), (ii) the modified global elevation model of SRTM30_PLUS (DEM2), and (iii) the regional elevation model of DEMNAS (DEM3). These alternative models comply with each other for the land areas with mean difference values lower than 1 meter. While for the ocean areas, we found that DEM1 and DEM2 have apparent differences due to the different types of data used. However, a similar assessment could not be performed for DEM3 as it only covers the land areas. Additionally, we compared the orthometric height from these terrain models with leveling observations for the coinciding locations. DEM3 achieves the highest accuracy with the estimated standard deviation of 11.2745 meters and is followed by DEM2 and DEM1 with the respective standard deviation of 29.4498 and 37.6872 meters. We found that these models can be used as a starting position determination for horizontal and vertical deformation analysis.</em></p>

Résumé :
The DEFECTIVE EMBRYO AND MERISTEMS 1 (DEM1) gene encodes a protein of unknown biochemical function required for meristem formation and seedling development in tomato, but it was unclear whether DEM1’s primary role was in cell division or alternatively, in defining the identity of meristematic cells. Genome sequence analysis indicates that flowering plants possess at least two DEM genes. Arabidopsis has two DEM genes, DEM1 and DEM2, which we show are expressed in developing embryos and meristems in a punctate pattern that is typical of genes involved in cell division. Homozygous dem1 dem2 double mutants were not recovered, and plants carrying a single functional DEM1 allele and no functional copies of DEM2, i.e. DEM1/dem1 dem2/dem2 plants, exhibit normal development through to the time of flowering but during male reproductive development, chromosomes fail to align on the metaphase plate at meiosis II and result in abnormal numbers of daughter cells following meiosis. Additionally, these plants show defects in both pollen and embryo sac development, and produce defective male and female gametes. In contrast, dem1/dem1 DEM2/dem2 plants showed normal levels of fertility, indicating that DEM2 plays a more important role than DEM1 in gamete viability. The increased importance of DEM2 in gamete viability correlated with higher mRNA levels of DEM2 compared to DEM1 in most tissues examined and particularly in the vegetative shoot apex, developing siliques, pollen and sperm. We also demonstrate that gamete viability depends not only on the number of functional DEM alleles inherited following meiosis, but also on the number of functional DEM alleles in the parent plant that undergoes meiosis. Furthermore, DEM1 interacts with RAS-RELATED NUCLEAR PROTEIN 1 (RAN1) in yeast two-hybrid and pull-down binding assays, and we show that fluorescent proteins fused to DEM1 and RAN1 co-localize transiently during male meiosis and pollen development. In eukaryotes, RAN is a highly conserved GTPase that plays key roles in cell cycle progression, spindle assembly during cell division, reformation of the nuclear envelope following cell division, and nucleocytoplasmic transport. Our results demonstrate that DEM proteins play an essential role in cell division in plants, most likely through an interaction with RAN1.

Résumé :
Forest models are tools for explaining and predicting the dynamics of forest ecosystems. They simulate forest behavior by integrating information on the underlying processes in trees, soil and atmosphere. Bayesian calibration is the application of probability theory to parameter estimation. It is a method, applicable to all models, that quantifies output uncertainty and identifies key parameters and variables. This study aims at testing the Bayesian procedure for calibration to different types of forest models, to evaluate their performances and the uncertainties associated with them. In particular,we aimed at 1) applying a Bayesian framework to calibrate forest models and test their performances in different biomes and different environmental conditions, 2) identifying and solve structure-related issues in simple models, and 3) identifying the advantages of additional information made available when calibrating forest models with a Bayesian approach. We applied the Bayesian framework to calibrate the Prelued model on eight Italian eddy-covariance sites in Chapter 2. The ability of Prelued to reproduce the estimated Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) was tested over contrasting natural vegetation types that represented a wide range of climatic and environmental conditions. The issues related to Prelued's multiplicative structure were the main topic of Chapter 3: several different MCMC-based procedures were applied within a Bayesian framework to calibrate the model, and their performances were compared. A more complex model was applied in Chapter 4, focusing on the application of the physiology-based model HYDRALL to the forest ecosystem of Lavarone (IT) to evaluate the importance of additional information in the calibration procedure and their impact on model performances, model uncertainties, and parameter estimation. Overall, the Bayesian technique proved to be an excellent and versatile tool to successfully calibrate forest models of different structure and complexity, on different kind and number of variables and with a different number of parameters involved

Srivastava, Anurag. « Comparison of Two Algorithms for Removing Depressions and Delineating Flow Networks From Grid Digital Elevation Models ». Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34268.

Résumé :
Digital elevation models (DEMs) and their derivatives such as slope, flow direction and flow accumulation maps, are used frequently as inputs to hydrologic and nonpoint source modeling. The depressions which are frequently present in DEMs may represent the actual topography, but are often the result of errors. Creating a depression-free surface is commonly required prior to deriving flow direction, flow accumulation, flow network, and watershed boundary maps. The objectives of this study were: 1) characterize the occurrence of depressions in 30m USGS DEMs and assess correlations to watershed topographic characteristics, and 2) compare the performance of two algorithms used to remove depressions and delineate flow networks from DEMs.

Sixty-six watersheds were selected to represent a range of topographic conditions characteristic of the Piedmont and Mountain and Valley regions of Virginia. Analysis was based on USGS 30m DEMs with elevations in integer meters. With few exceptions watersheds fell on single 7.5minute USGS quadrangle sheets, ranged in size from 450 to 3000 hectares, and had average slopes ranging from 3 to 20 percent. ArcView (3.1) with the Spatial Analyst (1.1) extension was used to summarize characteristics of each watershed including slope, elevation range, elevation standard deviation, curvature, channel slope, and drainage density. TOPAZ (ver 1.2) and ArcView were each used to generate a depression-free surface, flow network and watershed area. Characteristics of the areas 'cut' and 'filled' by the algorithms were compared to topographic characteristics of the watersheds. Blue line streams were digitized from scanned USGS 7.5minute topographic maps (DRGs) then rasterized at 30 m for analysis of distance from the derived flow networks.

The removal of depressions resulted in changes in elevation values in 0 - 11% of the cells in the watersheds. The percentage of area changed was higher in flatter watersheds. Changed elevation cells resulted in changes in two to three times as many cells in derivative flow direction, flow accumulation and slope grids. Mean fill depth by watershed ranged from 0 to 10 m, with maximum fill depths up to 40 m. In comparison with ArcView, TOPAZ, on average affected 30% fewer cells with less change in elevation. The significance of the difference between ArcView and TOPAZ decreased as watershed slope increased. A spatial assessment of the modified elevation and slope cells showed that depressions in the DEMs occur predominantly on or along the flow network. Flow networks derived by ArcView and TOPAZ were not significantly different from blue line streams digitized from the USGS quadrangles as indicated by a paired t test. Watershed area delineated by ArcView and TOPAZ was different for almost all watersheds, but was generally within 1%.

Conclusions from this study are: 1) The depressions in 30 m DEMs can make up a significant portion of the area especially for flatter watersheds; 2) The TOPAZ algorithm performed better than ArcView in minimizing the area modified in the process of creating a depressionless surface, particularly in flatter topography; 3) Areas affected by removing depressions are predominantly adjacent to the stream network; 4) For every elevation cell changed, slopes are changed for two to three cells, on average; and 5) ArcView and TOPAZ derived flow networks closely matched the blue line streams.

The direct borohydride fuel cells (DBFC) display a high theoretical cell voltage (1.64) and a high electron number per borohydride ion. Furthermore, the DBFC also presents the advantages of alkaline fuel cells, in which it is possible to use non-noble metal electrocatalysts and, hence, it is economically feasible for practical applications. However the lack of highly efficient electrocatalysts for the borohydride oxidation reaction (BOR) limits the performance of these devices, since its total oxidation, involving the transfer of eight electrons per BH4- ion, competes with parallel reaction pathways with a lower number of exchanged electrons. Recently, theoretical calculations were applied to determine the elementary steps of the reaction kinetics and also to guide metallic electrocatalyst design for borohydride oxidation. Based on the theoretical results, this work aimed at the BOR electrocatalysis investigation on carbon supported nanoparticles, of pure metals, Au/C, Ag/C, Pt/C and Pd/C, and on bimetallic nanoparticles, composed by the combination of these metals. The electrocatalysts were synthesized by chemical and/or impregnation reduction methods, and X-Ray Diffraction, High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy techniques were used for their physical characterization. The electrocatalytic activities were studied by steady state polarization curves using rotating disc electrodes. The borohydride hydrolysis, with the production of H2, was monitored in function of the electrode potential by on-line differential electrochemical mass spectrometry. The electrochemical experiments for the pure metal electrocatalysts showed higher electrocatalytic activity for Pd/C, and this was attributed to its high activity for BH3OH- electro-oxidation. The study of BH4- and BH3OH- concentration effect showed that with the increase of concentration, the onset potential shifted to lower values, indicating that the Faradaic currents of borohydride and hydroxyborane electro-oxidation were much higher than the current for the H2 evolution. The increase in the Pd/C load on the electrode led to an increase of the global current reaction at low potentials, which was associated to an increase in total surface area. Among the investigated bimetallic materials, the Pt2Pd/C electrocatalyst presented the higher Faradaic current. The Ag2Pd/C material showed the lower reaction potential onset. Although theoretical calculations pointed out to an increased activity of the Ag-modified Pd/C electrocatalysts in relation to that of pure Pd/C, the electrochemical and mass spectrometry results of this work indicated higher activity for pure Pd/C, and low synergic effect between the Ag and Pd atoms. This was associated to the low degree of interaction between Ag and Pd for the present investigated atomic composition.

Carbon supported Pt-Sn catalysts were prepared by reduction of Pt and Sn precursors with formic acid. The method allowed the efficient preparation of catalysts with low Sn contents (Pt:Sn ratio 9:1) and with high Sn contents (Pt:Sn ratio 1:3. In spite of the fact that Sn was anchored in the material, only part of the Sn is inserted in the fcc structure of Pt. Therefore, a thermal treatment in a reducing atmosphere was necessary to increase the degree of alloy. Thermal treatments were done between 100 and 500 oC and the Pt3Sn material treated at 200 oC showed the best performance in a direct ethanol fuel cell. The thermal treatment at 200 oC allowed an increase of the degree of alloy without modifying the face centered cubic Pt structure and without promoting the coalescence of the nanoparticles anchored on the carbon support. The Pt-Sn catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption and transmission electron microscopy. The activity for the electro-oxidation of ethanol was evaluated with electrochemical techniques and experiments in a single direct ethanol fuel cell. Studies with Pt single crystals with low and high Miller indices were done to complement the study of the ethanol electro-oxidation.

We hereby present a dataset produced at the Wittgenstein Centre (WIC) containing comprehensive time series on educational attainment and mean years of schooling (MYS). The dataset is split by 5-year age groups and sex for 171 countries and covers the period between 1970 and 2010. It also contains projections of educational attainment to 2060 based on several scenarios of demographic and educational development. The dataset is constructed around collected and harmonized empirical census and survey data sets for the projection base year. The article present the principles and methodology associated with the reconstruction and the projection, and how it differs from several previous exercises. It also proposes a closer look at the diffusion of education in world regions and how the existing gaps in terms of generations, gender, and geography - hence called the 3Gs - have been evolving in the last forty years.

Dias, Ricardo Rodrigues.

In this work, Pt/C, PtRh (90:10), PtRh/C (50:50), PtSn/C (50:50), PtRu (50:50)/C, PtRuRh/C (50:40:10) and PtSnRh/C (50:40:10) were prepared by an alcohol-reduction process with metal loading of 20 wt.% using H2PtCl6.6H2O (Aldrich), SnCl2.2H2O (Aldrich),and RhCl2.XH2O (Aldrich) as metals sources and Vulcan XC72 as support. The electrocatalysts were characterized by EDX, XRD and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The electro-oxidation of ethanol was studied by CV, chronoamperomety at room temperature in acid medium and tests at 100 0C on a single cell of a direct methanol or ethanol fuel cell. The EDX analysis showed that the metal atomic ratios of the obtained electrocatalysts were similar to the nominal atomic ratios used in the preparation. The diffractograms of electrocatalysts prepared showed four peaks at approximately 2 =400, 470, 670 and 820, which are associated with the (111), (200), (220) and (311) planes, respectively, of a face cubic-centered (fcc) structure characteristic of platinum and platinum alloys. The average crystallite sizes using the Scherrer equation and the calculated values were in the range of 23 nm. For PtSn/C and PtSnRh/C two additional peaks were observed at 2 = 340 and 520 that were identified as a SnO2 phase. PtSn/C (50:50) and PtSnRh/C (50:40:10) electrocatalyst showed the best performance for ethanol oxidation at room temperature. For methanol oxidation at room temperature PtRu/C, PtSn/C and PtRuRh/C electrocatalysts showed the best performance. Tests at 100 0C on a single cell of a direct ethanol fuel cell PtSnRh/C showed the best performance, for methanol oxidation PtRuRh/C showed the best performance.

Résumé :

The threats imposed by the ongoing climate change become successively more clear. In the municipality of Sandviken the possible rise in water level in the lake Storsjön might cause major problems. This study aims to produce an elevation model over one of the threatened areas so that the effect of different water levels in the lake can be studied in the future.

The area of study consists of an esker cutting straight through the lake Storsjön. The area is densely populated and the size is about 13 hectares.

Measurements were performed, both with GPS, utilizing Network-RTK, and with total station. The formations of the ridge were captured by following the breaklines with a point density of 225 points/ha as an intended goal.

The GPS measurements were transformed into the local coordinate system of Sandviken municipality. The measured coordinates for six control points were compared to the true coordinates. The fit was not perfect, so a Helmert transformation was performed on the plane coordinates. The accuracy of the measurements was below 50 mm after the transformation. Net adjustments in plane and height were performed on the total station measurements. The error ellipses for the station points varied from 2 to 44 mm. The over all point density achieved was 274 points/ha.

Two elevation models were created, one Triangular Irregular Network (TIN) and one interpolated model using a kriging interpolation. Contour lines from both models were produced and compared with each other. The TIN creates a more angular surface and therefore the contour lines are not as smooth as in the interpolated model. Both models showed good resemblance compared with the original data.

The DEM Breakline and Differencing Analysis Tool is the result of a multi-year research effort in the analysis of digital elevation models (DEMs) and the extraction of features associated with breaklines identified on the DEM by numerical analysis. Developed in the ENVI/IDL image processing application, the tool is designed to serve as an aid to research in the investigation of DEMs by taking advantage of local variation in the height. A set of specific workflow exercises is described as applied to a diverse set of four sample DEMs. These workflows instruct the user in applying the tool to extract and analyze features associated with terrain, vegetative canopy, and built structures. Optimal processing parameter choices, subject to user modification, are provided along with sufficient explanation to train the user in elevation model analysis through the creation of customized output overlays.
