Résumé :
This chapter re-examines the view widely held by physicists that the luminiferous ether became an outdated concept in the early twentieth century and that Albert Einstein’s special relativity killed it. A second common narrative is that the null result of the 1887 Michelson–Morley ether-drift experiment led to Einstein’s theory and the demise of the ether. On the basis of these two simplified narratives, it has become part of the physicists’ ‘imagined past’ that the Michelson–Morley experiment provided the key evidence decreeing the end of the ether. Using scientometrics, this chapter argues that the first part of this idealised narrative is misleading and that the two parts of this narrative are deeply intertwined, as both had historical roots in the reception of Einstein’s relativity theories. In this perspective, the well-known episode of Dayton C. Miller’s repetition of the Michelson–Morley experiment in the 1920s appears in a new light.

Adler, William. The Creation of Christian Elite Culture in Roman Syria and the Near East. Sous la direction de Daniel S. Richter et William A. Johnson. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199837472.013.50.

Résumé :
The chapter examines three exemplars of Syrian Christianity in the second and early third centuries: Tatian (ca. 120–180), Bar Daysan (154–222), and Julius Africanus (ca. 160–240). To varying degrees, all of them are as much creations of Hellenic high culture as they are representatives of the Church. In developing this argument, the chapter treats these figures in the context of themes familiar to students of the Second Sophistic: (1) attitudes toward Greek paideia; (2) relics and the creation of civic identities; (3) Hellenic court culture; and (4) the encounter of Greek-speaking eastern elites with Rome.

Résumé :
This chapter argues that roads can be deadly, not only for wildlife but also for people. It reveals that a shocking number of humans are killed daily throughout the world because of collisions with animals, although a much larger number are injured or remain deeply affected by the event. The chapter also analyses the traditional perception of roadkill in general which has been that the succession of dead animals along the roadside is simply an indication of the relative abundance of wildlife in the area. It then investigates the first systematic roadkill survey conducted by Dayton Stoner in 1925 and discusses the colossal contribution of the world's vehicles to global greenhouse gas emissions. The emissions referred to in this chapter are the various particles or energy waves that emanate from the traffic as it moves along the road. The chapter paints a picture of the complex and multidimensional influences associated with the steady and growing stream of vehicles coursing through the landscape.

Résumé :
This chapter draws upon nine months of qualitative, netographic (Kozinets, 2010) research conducted both online and in face-to-face contexts on college student use of Facebook and explores the impact this online platform has on students by studying behaviors, experiences, and perspectives of undergraduate students at the University of Dayton in Dayton, Ohio. The primary question guiding this research is: How do college students use Facebook to fulfill social needs in the creation and maintenance of community while attending college? The data consists of an analysis of transcribed interviews, email communications, and the interactive content of student Facebook users’ Facebook walls. The results indicate that students use Facebook to undertake particular tasks and toward particular ends. These include, but are not limited to: fostering and maintaining community, nurturing relationships, making public statements and protecting privacy, establishing a personal identity, building social capital, establishing cultural competency, coping, and critiquing their peers and campus.

Résumé :
This chapter evaluates the (neo)liberal peace agenda in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the region, arguing that local politics and international intervention continue to be somewhat oppositional. The February 2014 protests have pointed to a range of issues which are not even on the international actors' agendas even though they are related to material and concrete issues across the country. This has thrown into question the Dayton Agreement, the legitimacy of intervention, and local ownership, foregrounding questions relating the objectives of politics and the nature of legitimate authority in Bosnian society as a more autonomous political framework than that imagined by the European Union or foreign donors. One which is not just critical of nationalists in the region and country but also the emancipatory claims of external actors where they do not directly speak to the concerns of the local populations and its many different groups.

Résumé :
The European Union (EU) and Bosnia and Herzegovina have a long and specific relationship dating back to the early 1990s and the break-up of the former Yugoslavia. While the EU didn't present itself in a flattering light during the breakup of the SFRY, after the Dayton Peace Agreement and post-conflict governance, it tried to impose itself as a factor of stability in the eyes of B&H public. The aim of the chapter is to present key elements, problems, and consequences of unsuccessful integration into the EU. After a short presentation of the chronology of relations between B&H and the EU, the authors aim to answer several questions. First, what are the main issues in B&H-EU relations? Second, who is responsible for the stalemate in integration process? Third, how successful is the EU conditionality policy towards B&H?

Résumé :
Abstract Recent debates on changing forms of managerial control and work organization have often neglected the ways in which management systems and work practices are implemented and sustained in different contexts. This chapter presents a contribution based on an in-depth comparative study of how one internationalizing manufacturing organization from Japan has sought to introduce management systems and work organization at two UK sites. This provides an interesting context in which to examine if, and how, parent company systems are transferred, adapted, and sustained in an overseas subsidiary and to examine multinational organizations as potential sites of negotiation and conflict within which the influence of different business systems and actors is confronted and contested in the dayto-day management practices and processes of the foreign subsidiary.

Résumé :
In a journal article entitled ‘No More Peace!': How Disaster, Terror and War Have Upstaged Media Events (2007), Elihu Katz and Tamar Liebes offered a substantial revision of Media Events: The Live Broadcasting of History (Dayan & Katz, 1992). Katz and Liebes included “dark” events in the “media events” concept, distinguishing unexpected, disruptive events from the carefully scripted, integrative events that had been the sole focus of Media Events. They also claimed that disruptive events – like disaster, terror and war – have in fact upstaged more classical media events. In contrast, in this chapter I argue that ceremonial media events - as originally conceptualized by Dayan and Katz in the nineties - are still essential and powerful features of our social lives. First, I present an overview of the “pessimistic turn” of media events research and provide my criticism of it. Second, I discuss three contemporary case studies from three national contexts: the Obama inauguration (2009), the royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton (2011) and the most recent World Cup (2014). These three events represent the three basic scripts introduced by Dayan and Katz: “conquest,” “coronation” and “contest.” I argue that the selected case studies (and many other events) still bring societies and nations together in our “disillusioned” media environment, providing momentary hope for local and cosmopolitan citizens.

Résumé :
Abstract This chapter evaluates the measurement properties of an innovation questionnaire developed and being used as one of several measurement instruments to observe the development of a wide variety of innovations over time by the Minnesota innovation Research Program (MIRP). Evidence of the reliability and validity of the Minnesota innovation Survey (MIS) is provided by applying standard psychometric The authors are grateful for the cooperation of their colleagues who provided data from their innovation studies for this chapter, particularly John Bryson, Raghu Garud, Daniel Gilbert, Alfred Marcus, John Maurie!, Douglas Polley, Michael Rappa, Peter Ring, William Roering, Roger Schroeder, and Gary Scudder. This research was supported in part with a major grant to the Strategic Management Research Center to study the management of innovation from the Program on Organizational Effectiveness of the office of Naval Research under contract No. N000l4-84-K-0016. Additional support for the research program is being provided by ADC Telecommunications, Bemis, CENEX, Control Data, IBM, Dayton-Hudson, Dyco Petroleum, Farm Credit Services, First Bank System, Honeywell, and 3M Corporations and by the McKnight and Bush Foundations. procedures for evaluating tests and measurement instruments. Such a psychometric assessment is a necessary prerequisite to developing or testing substantive theories based on the MIS data, and provides important information about the strengths and weaknesses of the MIS instrument to other potential users who wish to use the survey to conduct research on the management of innovation.

Résumé :
Nearing the end of the program, participants are asked to reflect on how they will sustain their mindfulness practice going forward. This underscores the self-regulatory aspect of mindfulness, as one learns how to “become one’s own meditation instructor.” This chapter also contains information regarding the daylong retreat. Participants are given guidance on how to prepare for this silent day of group mindfulness practice, and time is spent in session addressing any questions or concerns about the retreat. The prior week’s experience tracking reacting versus responding in relationships is discussed, and the final new practice of Loving-Kindness is introduced as a way to cultivate compassion for ourselves and ultimately for others.

Résumé :
This chapter discusses the role of open health information management in the the development of a novel, adaptable mixed-platform for supporting health care informational needs. This platform enables clients (patient users) requiring healthcare to enter an unstructured but detailed account of their dayto- day health information requirements that may be structured into a lifetime electronic health record. It illustrates the discussion with an operational model and a pilot project in order to begin to explore the potential of a collaborative network of patient and health professional users to support the provision of health care services, and helping to effectively engage patient users with their own healthcare. Such a solution has the potential to allow both patient and health professional users to produce useful materials, to contribute to improved social health outcomes in terms of health education and primary disease prevention, and to address both pre-treatment and post-treatment phases of illness that are often neglected in the context of overburdened support services.
