Résumé :
Due to the growth of internet-connected devices and extensive data analysis applications in recent years, cloud computing systems are largely utilized. Because of high utilization of cloud storage systems, the demand for data center management has been increased. There are several crucial requirements of data center management, such as increase data availability, enhance durability, and decrease latency. In previous works, a replication technique is mostly used to answer those needs according to consistency requirements. However, most of the works consider full data, popular data, and geo-distance-based replications by considering storage and replication cost. Moreover, the previous data popularity based-techniques rely on the historical and current data access frequencies for replication. In this article, the authors approach this problem from a distinct aspect while developing replication techniques for a multimedia data center management system which can dynamically adapt servers of a data center by considering popularity prediction in each data access location. Therefore, they first label data objects from one to ten to track access frequencies of data objects. Then, they use those data access frequencies from each location to predict the future access frequencies of data objects to determine the replication levels and locations to replicate the data objects, and store the related data objects to close storage servers. To show the efficiency of the proposed methods, the authors conduct an extensive simulation by using real data. The results show that the proposed method has an advantage over the previous works in terms of data availability and increases the data availability up to 50%. The proposed method and related analysis can assist multimedia service providers to enhance their service qualities.

Résumé :
Big data analytics and Cloud computing are the two most imperative innovations in the current IT industry. In a surprise, these technologies come up together to convey the effective outcomes to various business organizations. However, big data analytics require a huge amount of resources for storage and computation. The storage cost is massively increased on the input amounts of data and requires innovative algorithms to reduce the cost to store the data in a specific data centers in a cloud. In Today’s IT Industry, Cloud Computing has emerged as a popular paradigm to host customer, enterprise data and many other distributed applications. Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) store huge amounts of data and numerous distributed applications with different cost. For example Amazon provides storage services at a fraction of TB/month and each CSP having different Service Level Agreements with different storage offers. Customers are interested in reliable SLAs and it increases the cost since the number of replicas are more. The CSPs are attracting the users for initial storage/put operations and get operations from the cloud becomes hurdle and subsequently increases the cost. CSPs provides these services by maintaining multiple datacenters at multiple locations throughout the world. These datacenters provide distinctive get/put latencies and unit costs for resource reservation and utilization. The way of choosing distinctive CSPs data centers, becomes tricky for cloud users those who are using the distributed application globally i.e. online social networks. In has mainly two challenges. Firstly, allocating the data to different datacenters to satisfy the SLO including the latency. Secondly, how one can reserve the remote resource i.e. memory with less cost. In this paper we have derived a new model to minimize the cost by satisfying the SLOs with integer programming. Additionally, we proposed an algorithm to store the data in a data center by minimizing the cost among different data centers and the computation of cost for put/get latencies. Our simulation works shows that the cost is minimized for resource reservation and utilization among different datacenters.

Résumé :
An assessment of the quality of call centers (CCS) can be described as the process of listening to recorded conversations between an operator or technical support service and a customer to assess the effectiveness of the operator and its performance. The main problem with quality control is that managers or supervisors do not have time to listen to all records, and therefore only a few of the total number of saved conversation records are randomly selected. This leads to inaccurate measurements of performance, since most of the records of calls are not tapped. This article presents a distributed call monitoring system to evaluate all recorded calls using multiple quality criteria. In the proposed system, we analyze a large number of call records using the popular Hadoop MapReduce platform, and using text algorithms such as cosine transformation and N-gram. Lists of slang words were also integrated into the monitoring system. Empirical call records are used to demonstrate the performance of the proposed call monitoring system.

Résumé :
In the context of ongoing transformations in society and the globalization of economic relations, the objects of the spatial environment of modern urban areas are also changing. The trend towards redevelopment or re-profiling of the urban environment in the direction of greening and increasing the comfort of living of the urban population is becoming more and more significant. These changes have become popular in a number of large cities in Russia due to the huge rate of population urbanization and the movement from small settlements towards megacities or large population centers. As a result, some of the territories occupied in the past years by the industrial sector, dilapidated production bases, transport hangars, and in some cases, dilapidated residential buildings have turned into modern residential complexes equipped with the necessary infrastructure, playgrounds, shopping centers and other objects of social significance. The article discusses the trend of re-profiling of the territory on the example of the city of St. Petersburg, which has significant capacity in this area. The old city center is saturated with industrial areas that are currently not used for their intended purpose. The needs for residential real estate data are realized by developers who actively repurpose these territories for modern large-scale residential complexes. However, this process is quite time-consuming and requires a lot of design work. At the same time, the re-profiling of the territory should be accompanied by the economic efficiency of these works, an example of the calculation of which is presented in the article.

Résumé :
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect, accounting for one-third of all congenital birth defects. As with complicated intracardiac structural abnormalities, CHD is usually treated with surgical repair, and computed tomography (CT) is the main examination method for diagnosis of CHD and also provides anatomical information to surgeons. Currently, there exists a serious shortage of professional surgeons in developing countries. Compared with developed countries where large hospitals and cardiovascular disease centers have professional surgical teams with rich treatment experience, surgeons in developing countries and remote areas suffer from lack of professional surgical skills resulting with low surgical quality and high mortality. Recently, surgical telementoring has been popular to tackle the above problems, in which less-skilled surgeons can get real-time guidance from skilled surgeons remotely through audio and video transmission. However, there still exists difficulties in applying telementoring to CHD surgeries including high resource consumption on medical data transmission and storage, large image noise, and inconvenient and inefficient discussion between surgeons on CT. In this article, we proposed a framework with an image compression module, an image denoising module, and an image segmentation module based on CT images in CHD. We evaluated the above three modules and compared them with existing works, respectively, and the results show that our methods achieve much better performance. Furthermore, with 3D printing, VR technology, and 5G communications, our framework was successfully used in a real case study to treat a patient who needed surgical treatment.

Résumé :
Increased meat consumption has been associated with the overuse of fresh water, underground water contamination, land degradation, and negative animal welfare. To mitigate these problems, replacing animal meat products with alternatives such as plant-, insect-, algae-, or yeast-fermented-based proteins, and/or cultured meat, is a viable strategy. Nowadays, there is a vast amount of information regarding consumers’ perceptions of alternative proteins in scientific outlets. Sorting and arranging this information can be time-consuming. To overcome this drawback, text mining and Natural Language Processing (NLP) are introduced as novel approaches to obtain sensory data and rapidly identify current consumer trends. In this study, the application of text mining and NLP in gathering information about alternative proteins was explored by analyzing key descriptive words and sentiments from n = 20 academic papers. From 2018 to 2021, insect- and plant-based proteins were the centers of alternative proteins research as these were the most popular topics in current studies. Pea has become the most common source for plant-based protein applications, while spirulina is the most popular algae-based protein. The emotional profile analysis showed that there was no significant association between emotions and protein categories. Our work showed that applying text mining and NLP could be useful to identify research trends in recent sensory studies. This technique can rapidly obtain and analyze a large amount of data, thus overcoming the time-consuming drawback of traditional sensory techniques.

Résumé :
The number of secondary school graduates choosing a particular discipline to study is, to some extent, the reflection of the position of this scientific discipline and the improvement of its research achievements as well as the economical needs for such university graduates. The popularity of a particular scientific discipline is revealed in the number of applicants wanting to study the selected discipline along with the number of students. It depends on many factors, such as: changing demographic processes, social changes, the demand for specialists in the sphere of the economy, the status and the position of a particular scientific discipline, the personal interest of the individual as well as the formal conditions (e.g. limits of the accepted students, legal restrictions, demanded disciplines, etc.). In order to answer the question how popular the Geographical studies are in Poland, the statistic data of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education was analyzed. Furthermore, the questionnaires among the students of Geography in eight academic centers in Poland were conducted. The research allowed to capture the important factors that had the great impact on the interest in the sphere of the geographical studies among young people. It should allow the universities dealing with geographical studies to develop the strategies of popularization of such studies. The psychological aspect of the made choice had the considerable impact on the popularity. The main factors, which were crucial as far as the selection of the studies at the university was concerned, appeared as follow: the close distance from the university, the possibility of selecting the preferred specialty, the prestige of the university in the rankings, the family traditions. Key words: competences, entrepreneurship, reasons for the selection, the strategy of education.

Résumé :
With its ever increasing number of speakers, Spanish, being one of the so-called major languages of the world, has overtaken English in terms of native speakers in recent years, now ranking second behind Chinese, and its growing popularity and expansion can be felt in Latvia as well. In recent years it is evidenced by an increase in translations of original works into Latvian, cinema and theatre performances, rapid growth of various Spanish companies and, undoubtedly, the interest of the residents of Latvia, particularly young people, in learning Spanish. In Latvia, Spanish can be learned in general education schools, starting from Form 6; it is more popular among secondary school pupils, as evidenced by the number of general education schools: in academic year 2018/19 Spanish could be learned in 18 general education schools, while in academic year 2019/20 there were 16 education institutions offering the language. Moreover, the capital of Latvia is not the only place where Spanish is taught as a second or third foreign language: everything depends on the opportunities provided by each individual school. In total, there were 32 schools in Latvia where Spanish was taught as the third or even the fourth foreign language during last academic year. To obtain secondary education in Latvia, one of the centralised exams has to be taken in a foreign language; English is the most popular choice among schools. Those who wish to obtain a certificate in Spanish can do so at the Instituto Cervantes DELE examination centre, which has been operating at the Latvian Academy of Culture since 2004. The centre offers an opportunity to take exams at 6 levels and obtain the internationally recognised DELE diploma, certifying the examinee’s Spanish knowledge and skills. Spanish can also be learned in courses and at language centres irrespective of the students’ age and previous knowledge. Picasso and Seneca, two private Spanish language centres, have been successfully operating in Latvia for more than 10 years, and their students range from pupils to seniors. Bachelor students learn Spanish at the Latvian Academy of Culture in the Latvia-Spain Cross-Cultural Communication programme; however, they do not obtain a qualification in philology. Master students can learn Spanish as part of the Romance Language and Culture Studies study programme at the University of Latvia, and the language is also offered as an elective course at other higher education institutions in Latvia. Unfortunately, systemic Spanish acquisition and programme continuity is hindered by the lack of a Spanish philology bachelor study programme at the University of Latvia. The paper focuses on Spanish learning traditions, issues, and future opportunities in Latvia, drawing upon data available in the state education system and interviews with industry experts: officials, educators, and translators.

During the 1690s a new print format began to emerge – the slip song, or slip ballad, which rapidly became the most popular means for disseminating the words of popular songs. There has been little research into the format and production of these songs. This chapter therefore provides a case study of the 3,800 songs listed on ESTC annotated with the words slip song. It considers such matters as the format, illustration, price, subject content, date, language, authorship and or performance, place of publication, and who printed, sold, or collected them. During the last quarter of the eighteenth century a new format emerged of engraved song sheets and these are also briefly considered.

Résumé :
AbstractThe Sudanese healthcare system has two main branches to solve the country’s health problems, preventive medicine and therapeutic medicine. In other words, it mainly works with communicable and non-communicable diseases and the services are divided into primary level (for the primary health centers), secondary level (general hospitals), and tertiary level (specialized centers such as oncology and neurosurgery). However, the main factors that are drawbacks to the healthcare system are overall economic instability, low health expenditure, and civil wars. Data about cancer in Sudan is scarce. There is a lack of prospective whole country studies about cancer in Sudan. The instability of the population, inadequate trained personnel, and the inefficient cancer registry system contributed to the lack of accurate figures about the true incidence of cancer in Sudan. Therefore, the frequency ratios of tumors are mostly represented in different publications. Cancer in Sudanese patients is usually present lately or in advanced stages and many cases are reported at younger ages. Cancer treatment centers in Sudan are few with inadequate resources for the variety of treatment methods. While huge efforts are being made to improve cancer medical care in the country, there are still many obstacles that need to be solved to ensure that cancer patients have a high standard of services in both public and private sectors. There are limited early detection and screening programs, especially in rural areas. More diagnostic and treatment centers are now being established in many cities in Sudan. This chapter addresses the general view of the cancer situation in Sudan, reviewing the different aspects of the cancer burden and different associated conditions related to oncology.

Résumé :
AbstractThe amount of unstructured scientific data in the form of documents, reports, papers, patents, and the like is exponentially increasing each year. Technological advances and their implementations emerge at a similarly fast pace, making for many disciplines a manual overview of interdisciplinary and relevant studies nearly impossible. Consequently, surveying large corpora of documents without any automation, i.e. information extraction systems, seems no longer feasible. Fortunately, most articles are now accessible through digital channels, enabling automatic information retrieval by large database systems. Popular examples of such systems are Google Scholar or Scopus. As they allow us to rapidly find relevant and high-quality citations and references to previous work, these systems are particularly valuable in academic writing. However, not all users are aware of the mechanisms underlying relevance sorting, which we will address in this chapter. For example, in addition to searching for specific terms, new tools facilitate the discovery of relevant studies by using synonyms as well as similar works/citations. The near future holds even better tools for the creation of surveys, such as automatic summary generation or automatic question-answering systems over large corpora. In this chapter, we will discuss the relevant technologies and systems and their use in the academic writing context.

Résumé :
Abstract The reader of K.J. Dover‘s magisterial Greek Popular Morality in the Time of Plato and Aristotle (hereafter GPM) cannot but be struck by the fact that, while the names of Plato and Aristotle appear in the title as an indication of the temporal scope of the work, reference to their writings in the book itself is comparatively sparse. This comparative neglect stems directly from his conception of the project. In his preface (pp. xi-xii) he distinguishes the subject of the work, viz. ‘the data relevant to popular morality‘, from ‘systematic ethical thought‘ (i.e. the ethical theories of Plato and Aristotle), and points out that he has not attempted (in GPM) to investigate the relation between the two. The existence of the distinction between popular morality and ethical theory I take as self evident, and I have no quarrel with Dover‘s decision not to undertake the complex task of investigating the relations between the two in the Greece of the fourth century BC; he rightly sees GPM as devoted to the prior task of providing part of the data for such an investigation. But the writings of Plato and Aristotle may themselves be expected to provide, in addition to their authors‘ theoretical views, some evidence of current moral attitudes. Any author writing on morality must take some interest in, and therefore provide evidence for, views current at the time of writing. Moreover, the character of the works of Plato and Aristotle gives special reasons for expecting them to be fruitful sources of such evidence. Plato writes dialogues in which some characters express, not Plato‘s own beliefs, but views which Plato presumably believed to be current at the time; Aristotle‘s ethical method explicitly counts current moral beliefs as among the ϕ α iν ó μ ϵ ν α which it is the task of ethical theory to systematize and harmonize (EN 1095a28-30, EE 1216b26-35, 1235b13-18).

Résumé :
Green energy infrastructure with the internet technologies relies on five important domains: green machine to machine (M2M), green cloud computing (CC), green data center (DC), green ICT, and green cellular. The ever-increasing demand for cloud computing and heavy dependence on cloud for storage, processing, and applications results in the need for more data centers with high capacity. Power management using wireless sensor networks (WSN) can be a potential solution as there has been a lot of works suing WSN for power management for green buildings, green home, and green farming. The same design can be applied to data centers with modifications to cater for data centers. Since WSN is part of IoT, various IoT-related solutions can be proposed for green data center solutions. A hybrid model that consists of virtualization, cooling systems, and IoT shows energy efficient data center designs. There have been various efforts as such, and this research will present green energy designs and mainly IoT-related initiatives for green-aware data centers.

Résumé :
Cloud computing provides on-demand access to computing resources for users across the world. It offers services on a pay-as-you-go model through data center sites that are scattered across diverse geographies. However, cloud data centers consume huge amount of electricity and leave high amount of carbon footprint in the ecosystem. This makes data centers responsible for 2% of the global CO2 emission. Therefore, having energy and carbon-efficient techniques for resource management in distributed cloud data centers is inevitable. This chapter presents a taxonomy and classifies the existing research works based on their target system, objective, and the technique they use for resource management in achieving a green cloud computing environment. Finally, it discusses how each work addresses the issue of energy and carbon-efficiency and also provides an insight into future directions.

Résumé :
As a direct consequence of the increasing popularity of cloud computing solutions, data centers are growing amazingly and hence have to urgently face with the energy consumption issue. Available solutions are focused basically on the system layer, by leveraging virtualization technologies to improve energy efficiency. Another body of works relies on cloud computing models and virtualization techniques to scale up/down applications based on their performance metrics. Although those proposals can reduce the energy footprint of applications and by transitivity of cloud infrastructures, they do not consider the internal characteristics of applications to finely define a trade-off between applications Quality of Service and energy footprint. In this paper, the authors propose a self-adaptation approach that considers both application internals and system to reduce the energy footprint in cloud infrastructure. Each application and the infrastructure are equipped with control loops, which allow them to autonomously optimize their executions. The authors implemented the control loops and simulated them in order to show their feasibility. In addition, the chapter shows how the solution fits in federated clouds through a motivating scenario. Finally, it provides some discussion about open issues on models and implementation of the proposal.

Résumé :
Globally accessible data warehouses are useful in many commercial and scientific organizations. For instance, research centers can be put together through a grid infrastructure in order to form a large virtual organization with a huge virtual data warehouse, which should be transparently and efficiently queried by grid participants. As it is frequent in the grid environment, in the Grid-based Data Warehouse one can both have resource constraints and establish Service Level Objectives (SLOs), providing some Quality of Service (QoS) differentiation for each group of users, participant organizations or requested operations. In this work, we discuss query scheduling and data placement in the grid-based data warehouse, proposing the use of QoS-aware strategies. There are some works on parallel and distributed data warehouses, but most do not concern the grid environment and those which do so, use best-effort oriented strategies. Our experimental results show the importance and effectiveness of proposed strategies.

Résumé :
The power trend for server systems continues to grow thereby making thermal management of data centers a very challenging task. Although various configurations exist, the raised floor plenum with Computer Room Air Conditioners (CRACs) providing cold air is a popular operating strategy. In prior work, numerous data center layouts employing raised floor plenum and the impact of design parameters such as plenum depth, ceiling height, cold isle location, tile openings and others on thermal performance of data center were presented. The air cooling of data center however, may not address the situation where more energy is expended in cooling infrastructure than the thermal load of data center. Revised power trend projections by ASHRAE TC 9.9 predict heat loads as high as 5000W per square feet of compute servers’ equipment footprint by year 2010. These trend charts also indicate that heat load per product footprint has doubled for storage servers during 2000–2004. For the same period, heat load per product footprint for compute servers has tripled. Amongst the systems that are currently available and being shipped, many racks exceed 20kW. Such high heat loads have raised concerns over air cooling limits of data centers similar to that of microprocessors. A hybrid cooling strategy that incorporates liquid cooling along with air cooling can be very efficient in such situations. The impact of such an operating strategy on thermal management of data center is discussed in this paper. A representative data center is modeled using commercially available CFD code. The change in rack temperature gradients, recirculation cells and CRAC demand due to use of hybrid cooling is presented in a detailed parametric study. It is shown that the hybrid cooling strategy improves the cooling of data center which may enable full population of rack and better management of system infrastructure.

Résumé :
Abstract Exercise machines are becoming increasingly popular in rehbilitation and physical therapy. Gravity balancing is an important feature that is sought after in rehabilitative machines in order to make these accessible to patients with low muscular ability. Often, gravity loads in a mechanism are compensated by feed-forward actuator efforts that quasi-statically balance the mechanism in a configuration and are applied in addition to the actuator efforts required to perform a task. Such a scheme works but places large demands on the actuators. Also, actuator efforts are required at every joint in order to keep the mechanism balanced. This paper describes the design and fabrication of a gravity balanced planar mechanism, where auxiliary parallelograms are used to identify the center of mass of the augmented mechanism. A sliding carriage positions a counterweight directly above the center of mass in order to make the system gravity balanced. The sliding carriage uses joint encoder data to compute the location of the center of mass. Experiment results are presented which demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach.

Résumé :
Heterogeneous systems employing CPUs and GPUs are becoming increasingly popular in large-scale data centers and cloud environments. In these platforms, sharing a GPU across different applications is an important feature to improve hardware utilization and system throughput. However, under scenarios where GPUs are competitively shared, some challenges arise. The decision on the simultaneous execution of different kernels is made by the hardware and depends on the kernels resource requirements. Besides that, it is very difficult to understand all the hardware variables involved in the simultaneous execution decisions, in order to describe a formal allocation method. In this work, we studied the impact that kernel resource requirements have in concurrent execution and used machine learning (ML) techniques to infer the interference caused by the concurrent execution, and to classify the slowdown that results from this interference. The ML techniques were analyzed over the GPU benchmark suites, Rodinia, Parboil and SHOC. Our results showed that, from the features selected in the analysis, the number of blocks per grid, number of threads per block, and number of registers are the resource consumption features that most affect the performance of the concurrent execution.

Résumé :
Hobie Cat is one of the most popular sailboat production companies to ever exist, and the Hobie 16 is the most popular boat in the Hobie Cat line-up. The key to Hobie’s success was largely in part to advancements in strong and lightweight materials. This advancement allowed Hobie to achieve record breaking performance in their particular class of boat. The mast of the Hobie 16 is one of the heavier pieces of the craft. The overall mass and center of mass is greatly affected by this component, which begs to question if there may possibly be room for improvement. A sailboat mast is defined as a tall vertical spar, sometimes sectioned, that rises from the keel or deck of a sailing vessel to support the sails and the standing and running rigging. Sailboat masts are long, slender structures. They must be designed to be able to hold the thrust loads that are acting on them from the sails which will differ based on wind conditions. A mast must also be made of a material that will allow it to go through the varying environmental conditions without fatiguing. When designing a sailboat mast a few of the main goals are to have a low center of gravity, be light weight, and also aerodynamically efficient. During this research a Hobie 16 mast design was taken as a baseline design for testing. The current mast on the market weighs between 50–60 lbs. While this is not extremely heavy, the center of gravity is approximately 13.5 feet from the end of the mast. This high center of gravity makes it tough to raise and lower the mast when launching the boat. One important objective in this work is to create a mast that will be easier for the user to raise and lower without sacrificing the structural integrity of the mast. Three masts have been created in solid modeling software, and their performance characteristics have been tested using finite element analysis software ANSYS. Two of the designs are original works, while one is a copy of the original Hobie Cat design. The original design was analyzed, providing baseline data for which to compare the new designs with. In addition to the new designs, all designs have been constructed from three different materials as Aluminum Alloy 6061, Aluminum Alloy 7075 and Acrylic. This allows for comparison of designs and possible new materials. After an in depth analysis of all masts, the recommendation is made that Hobie 16 users would benefit greatly from the use of a tapered mast made of aluminum alloy 7075.

Résumé :
The power trend for Server systems continues to grow thereby making thermal management of Data centers a very challenging task. Although various configurations exist, the raised floor plenum with Computer Room Air Conditioners (CRACs) providing cold air is a popular operating strategy. These rising heat load trends in data center facilities have raised concerns over energy usage. The environmental protection agency has reported that the energy used in 2006 by data center industry was 1.5% of the total energy usage by entire nation. The experts agree that by year 2010, this usage will approach 2% of the annual energy use nationwide. This has been the driving force behind the new solutions or technologies such as free cooling. Recent studies show that the outside air can be drawn in to cool the IT equipment without any undue electronic component failure due to contaminant. In this paper, different cases employing air side economizer are discussed. Numerical models are created to study the qualitative impact of the solution under various operating conditions.

Résumé :
The data center of tomorrow is characterized as one containing a dense aggregation of commodity computing, networking and storage hardware mounted in industry standard racks. In fact, the data center is a computer. The walls of the data center are akin to the walls of the chassis in today’s computer system. The new slim rack mounted systems and blade servers enable reduction in the footprint of today’s data center by 66%. While maximizing computing per unit area, this compaction leads to extremely high power density and high cost associated with removal of the dissipated heat. Today’s approach of cooling the entire data center to a constant temperature sampled at a single location, irrespective of the distributed utilization, is too energy inefficient. We propose a smart cooling system that provides localized cooling when and where needed and works in conjunction with a compute workload allocator to distribute compute workloads in the most energy efficient state. This paper shows a vision and construction of this intelligent data center that uses a combination of modeling, metrology and control to provision the air conditioning resources and workload distribution. A variable cooling system comprising variable capacity computer room air conditioning units, variable air moving devices, adjustable vents, etc. are used to dynamically allocate air conditioning resources where and when needed. A distributed metrology layer is used to sense environment variables like temperature and pressure, and power. The data center energy manager redistributes the compute workloads based on the most energy efficient availability of cooling resources and vice versa. The distributed control layer is no longer associated with any single localized temperature measurement but based on parameters calculated from an aggregation of sensors. The compute resources not in use are put on “standby” thereby providing added savings.

Résumé :
In recent years, cool Japan anime, video games and manga have been recognized as important export-oriented merchandise in Japan. Another recent Japanese genre is light novels. Light novels are one of the genres of novels and construct a part of recent Japanese pop culture. In Japan recently, the anime, manga and live-action films have been adapted from the original light novels. Light novels were chiefly read by high and junior-high school student previously, but the range of the readers has been expanding widely in recent years. However, light novels have not been statistically studied yet. In the present study, 533 titles of popular light novels published in 2004-2020 were investigated to clarify the trends in the genre.Numbers were counted for each of 129 items, data of published year, publisher, label, platform first appeared on, length of time from the first publication to the release of the anime adaptation, length of time from the first publication to the manga adaptation and so on for each year. And a 17 x 129 cross-tabulation table was constructed. Then it was analyzed by correspondence analysis and cluster analysis. The results of the correspondence analysis showed a three-dimensional solution with a cumulative contribution ratio of 64 %. Each year was plotted on the three-dimensional space, then cluster analysis was performed on the plots with Ward’s method. The results of the cluster analysis showed that the plots could be divided into four periods; 2004-005, 2006-2015, 2016-2017 and 2018-2020.The results showed that KADOKAWA’s labels were popular between 2004 and 2014, but the other publishers’ labels which collect novels appearing in individuals’ private home pages or posted on web-sites became popular in recent years. The most important part of the business strategy of light novels is mass-production, which means a large number of works and writers are needed. As such, it stands to reason that internet novel submission sites have become an important source for publishers. The results also showed that it only took one or two years to produce anime for many titles between 2006 and 2014, but in recent years, the period of time has increased to four years and the number of cases where no anime was produced has also increased. Additionally, manga based on the light novels tends to be published within one year. This suggests that the center of the multimedia strategy of light novels has shifted from anime to manga. Since the mid-2010s, tablet devices and e-comics applications have rapidly developed. This has enabled publishers to rapidly produce and publish manga based on the original light novels. Moreover, it now takes longer to produce anime, because the quality of frames and productions costs have increased. Therefore, anime studios tend to select an original work of light novel carefully, observing the sales of the e-manga adaptation.

Résumé :
Despite the sharp drop in transit ridership throughout the USA that began in March 2020, two different uses of land near transit stations continue to be implemented in the United States to promote ridership. Since 2010, transit agencies have given priority to multi-family residential construction referred to as transit oriented development (TOD), with an emphasis on housing affordability. In second place for urban planners but popular with suburban commuters is free or inexpensive parking near rail or bus transit centers, known as park-and-ride (PnR). Sometimes, TOD and PnR are combined in the same development. Public policy seeks to gain high community value from both of these land uses, and there is public interest in understanding the circumstances and locations where one of these two uses should be emphasized over the other. Multiple justifications for each are offered in the professional literature and reviewed in this report. Fundamental to the strategic decision making necessary to allocate public resources toward one use or the other is a determination of the degree to which each approach generates transit ridership. In the research reported here, econometric analysis of GIS data for transit stops, PnR locations, and residential density was employed to measure their influence on transit boardings for samples of transit stops at the main transit agencies in Seattle, Los Angeles, and San José. Results from all three cities indicate that adding 100 parking spaces close to a transit stop has a larger marginal impact than adding 100 housing units. Previous academic research estimating the higher ridership generation per floor area of PnR compared to multi-family TOD housing makes this show of strength for parking an expected finding. At the same time, this report reviews several common public policy justifications for TOD as a preferred land development emphasis near transit stations, such as revenue generation for the transit agency and providing a location for below-market affordable housing where occupants do not need to have a car. If increasing ridership is important for a transit agency, then parking for customers who want to drive to a station is an important option. There may also be additional benefits for park-and-ride in responding to the ongoing pandemic.
