Today, the world is facing the highest numbers of internally displaced persons and refugees since at least World War II. Addressing this crisis involves several challenges regarding the law and politics of displacement. To see how this plays out, it is helpful to zero in on a particular case. The case of the Rohingya minority from Myanmar who have been pushed out into Bangladesh is a particularly acute case, one involving atrocity crimes and ethnic cleansing.

Résumé :
The influence of Grand Princess Euphrosyne (second wife of Prince Roman Mstislavovitch) explains the appearance among the Galician-Volhynian princes of Christian names which were unusual and unique for the Rurikides. This is the name Daniel, which was later included into the name list of the Moscow princes. This name spread among the princes due to the expansion of the cult of St Daniel the Stylite and the rising interest in the attributes of Stylitism. This can be seen in sphragistics and in the numerous architectural monuments of Galician-Volhynian Rus' of the 13th–early 14th century. Thanks to the family links between the Galician-Volhynian and the Vladimir-Suzdal princes, this cult spread in the North-Eastern Rus' and later to Moscow. The fact that Euphrosyne of Galicia was the daughter of Basileus Isaak II explains the unexpected rise of interest in Stylitism among the princes of Rus' and their milieu. According to Niketas Choniates, Emperor Isaak II especially sympathized with the Stylites and the ascetics and patronized them. Thus he astonished his contemporaries, since the Stylites had lost the influence over the emperors that they had exerted at the time of iconoclasm. The Byzantine hagiography concerning Sts. Daniel the Stylite and Leo the Great Tsar explains the connection between the names of Daniel and Leo among the descendants of Roman Mstislavich. Daniel the Stylite was the spiritual father and the main adviser of Emperor Leo I. Apparently this relationship was reflected in the names of the father and the son, the Galician-Volhynian princes Daniel Romanovich and Lev Danilovich.

Résumé :
The article is an attempt to answer two questions set at the beginning of the article about the instruments and the origin of the band described in the book of Daniel 3: 5, 7, 10 and 15. After short historical remarks, the current knowledge about the instruments mentioned in the book of Daniel is presented. To all of the seven terms (for comparative purposes) Greek and Latin equivalents were added, as well as the etymology. In case of the disputable terms the most important hypothesis were put forward, forming (more than once erroneously) mainly through the translational practice an image of the musical scene. In the next part, first the Hellenic (2nd century B. C.) and then – supported by the author – Mesopotamian (6th century B. C.) hypothesis about the origin of the band are discussed. The subject of the article is set in the context of the reflections on the musical cultures of ancient Greece and Mesopotamia. The musicological discourse is based in the first place on the preserved iconographical evidence and, to a lesser degree, on the stationery one. Five modern Polish translations of Daniel 3: 5, 7, 10 and 15 and a comment on them form the final part of the article.

The subject of the present work is the study of the paleochristian exegesis of the “tales” included in the Book of Daniel, in a pluridisciplinary perspective which examines the evidences coming from both iconography and literature. The work takes into account the documentation from the origins of iconography (end of the II century), to the so-called “Constantinian period”, including materials coming from every geographic context of ancient Christianity. The research is divided in three sections, according to the principal hermeneutic traditions of the “typological”, “allegoric” and “literary” reception of the biblical text, mainly highlighting the role assumed by the “tales” in the formation of the ancient martyrdom theology. The analysis assumes an historical-critical method, mainly focusing on the comparison between two different documentary categories, which attest the variety and the heterogeneity of the biblical interpretation activated in the first communities. The inclusion of the figurative source derives from its revaluation: more than “biblia pauperum”, the ancient iconography, produced in the context of liturgy, expresses an independent and original tradition of the “tales” reception. Under this point of view, the complex interpretation of the Book of Daniel offers a good paradigm to understand, in a wider sense, the processes determining the formation of paleochristian thought.

Résumé :
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES
The expansion of the ancient Kingdom of Macedonia, under the leadership of Alexander The Great, prompted the accession of Hellenic cultural dimensions throughout the West and Middle East in a process of cultural diffusion known as Hellenization. However, hellenistic cultural dominance was not without struggle Thus, this research has proposed as an hypothesis that the Old Testament book of Daniel is a result of a socio-religious experience that countered epicureanism by highlighting the principle of faithfulness to Yahweh. Daniel’s apocalypse offers a conception that the Jewish monotheistic deity interferes history in a conclusive manner, since in the end of time it will be judging all of the infidels (Dan 7: 13-14). Such philosophical system believed that the gods were in a state of ataraxia, blissfulness, serenity, antipathetic to any human feeling. Therefore, from a cultural approach of the religious phenomenon it has been scrutinized if the book of Daniel, written in an apocalyptic language, presents a proposal of socio-religious way of life posing an antithesis to the Epicurean doctrine while fostering the maintenance of a Jewish identity related to the divine figure of Yahweh in the second century BCE.

Abstract The generation of a cartilage substitute will require both the mechanical and biochemical properties of the substance to approach that of native tissue. Recent studies (Buschmann et al., 1992, 1995; Bader and Lee, 1997) have shown that agarose can provide a suitable environment for the production of a mechanically functional matrix. Over time cells seeded in this matrix alter the intrinsic mechanical properties of the matrix. Additionally, several studies have included such biochemical factors as vitamin C (ascorbate) to the culture medium. This biological effector has varied effects on chondrocyte matrix biosynthesis. Specifically, it has been shown to promote calcification in chick growth plate chondrocytes (Wu et al., 1989), while it increased both type II and type I procollagen mRNA in 5 day culture (Sandell and Daniel, 1988). Conversely, it has been shown in bovine culture that aggrecan mRNA levels rise steadily in monolayer culture without ascorbate. but rise quickly and then fall off in its presence (Hering et al., 1994). To assess the effect of ascorbate in our system, primary bovine articular chondrocytes seeded in agarose, we initiated a study to examine the effects of ascorbate on both the production of cartilage extracellular matrix and the development of mechanical properties over a 14 day culture period. Three groups were studied: agarose disks without cells (control) and cell-seeded agarose disks maintained in DMEM supplemented daily with and without 50 μg/ml of ascorbate. Glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and hydroxyproline contents of each disk were determined using standard colorimetric assays.

Historically, planing surfaces have been successfully used in a wide variety of practical applications ranging from flying boats of the 1930’s to the high-speed recreational, commercial, and military craft of the modern era. Planing hull analysis technology spans a similar time frame. The pioneering works of von Karman (1929) and Wagner (1932) were motivated by military interests in flying boats. Similarly, in the United States, Davidson Laboratories conducted and enormous amount of experimental research starting largely in the World War II time frame. One of the seminal publications related to planing hull performance prediction is Savitsky (1964), based upon research conducted at Davidson Laboratories. A major motivation for the Savitsky (1964) work, was to be able to provide the naval architect with a tool to assess steady planing performance in a meaningful way during the preliminary design process. Savitsky (1964) allowed the designer to study tradeoffs between variables such as deadrise angle, , chine beam, , planing surface length, longitudinal center of gravity, vessel weight, and shaft angle. As the 2010 Chesapeake Bay Powerboat Symposium is honoring the professional accomplishments of Dr. Daniel Savitsky, the work contained herein is motivated by the example set by Dr. Savitsky in successfully applying fundamental research findings to practical planing hull naval architecture problems. In the spirit of Savitsky (1964), the work of Savander (1997) and Savander, et al., (2002) was motivated by the need to provide the planing hull designer with a tool to assess steady planing performance that allowed for sufficient geometric sensitivity in a computationally efficient manner. These methods are based upon application of a slender body theory approach in conjunction with an ideal flow theory formulation. Savander, et al. (2002) revealed explicit definition of general deadrise variation, B (x,z), in the formulation for dynamic lift and drag, where the horizontal plane is defined by (x,z). The formulation presented in Savander, et al. (2002) is implemented in a numerical program identified as SEAdyn. SEAdyn is used herein to analyze the calm water resistance characteristics of a series of geometrically related planing surfaces created by systematic variation of deadrise, B (x,z), as may be used by the naval architect in the planing hull design process. The baseline hull configuration corresponds to the 70-ft planing hull (JB70) presented in Savander, et al. (2008) which was extensively tested at model scale by MARIN, and at full scale by MTU - Detroit Diesel. The performance of the hullform variants is presented and compared to model test results obtained by MARIN for the JB70. The hullform that which displayed the most favorable resistance improvement is be analyzed, as part of an ongoing effort, with the RANS solvers STAR-CCM+ and OPENFOAM. The results from model tests, SEAdyn, STAR-CCM+, and OPENFOAM are all be presented and the merits of each analysis approach discussed.

Résumé :
In 1952, Gilbert S. Daniels published his seminal report “The ’Average Man’?” which examined the measurements of 4,063 active United States Air Force personnel (Daniels. 1952). This report detailed a profound yet simple finding: that after eliminating for ten common anthropometric measurements, no one person meets the average for all body dimensions. We analyzed Two anthropometric data bases over two studies, following an updated version of Daniels’ (1952) original method. The biggest changes were not eliminating the top and bottom percentiles of the population, and adjusted the calculation to find middle 25-30%. The databases examined were ANSUR II (Gorden et al., 2014) and CAESAR (Robinette et al., 2002), to see how civilian and military populations compare. The results of both studies were generally consistent with Daniels (1952), however we did discover that some individuals were able to meet the criteria for average after ten measurements. The best performance took place in the ANSUR II combined condition, all three individuals were men. This last part is especially important to note, as the combined sample eliminated women out of the sample faster than men. Being eliminated after the sixth measurement. This confirms a potential bias to combining men’s and women’s measurements without great care. Based on our analysis of modern anthropometric databases using Daniels’ original method it is clear that, while we found some “average people”, the significance of its findings holds true. This is not to say we should ignore the average, but we should understand its use in context and strive to go beyond it. Thinking past a formative understanding of how people are shaped, and instead into what is needed to create well-fitting products for a specific population. Examples spanning several industries merely scratch the surface of what needs to be addressed. Looking around as we go through our day, minor and major inconveniences become apparent. They cannot be all fixed at once, but through diligent research and thoughtful design we can use the principles of universal design to our advantage. Looking ahead to the next 70 years, a continued growth in optimizing products for the individual user and helping these users understand why these optimizations matter is not just desirable, but important.

Résumé :
The paper points to differences in the depiction of the character of the Holy King Milutin within the genre of hagiography, especially in the works by Danilo II of Pec, who succeeded Danilo I, and Danilo III of Banja, and in the selection of stylistic devices serving the purpose of his characterisation. To this end, the author focuses on The Short Hagiography of King Milutin by Danilo III and its literary significance. In the process of characterisation of King Milutin, Danilo III is primarily interested in his charity work, in order for the 'unifying' element of his enterprise to be highlighted. With regard to this, the author points to sources of some Biblical quoatations used throughout the text and their being embedded in the idea of the work as a whole and shows that the abundance of figures of speech represents the foundation of hyperbolisation of the celebrated. This abundance of literary devices, especially the figure of diction and that of trope, along with the clearly expressed idea of an all-expanding and all-permeating love towards Orthodox Christians, which King Milutin shows by giving charity, both classifies Danilo III as one of the greatest literary figures of Medieval Serbian Literature and reveals his education. In his literary interpretation, much as in his clerical service, Danilo III created a halo for King Milutin.

Résumé :
Background Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer death worldwide.(1) It is the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia (12,741 cases diagnosed in 2018) and the leading cause of cancer death.(2) The number of years of potential life lost to lung cancer in Australia is estimated to be 58,450, similar to that of colorectal and breast cancer combined.(3) While tobacco control strategies are most effective for disease prevention in the general population, early detection via low dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening in high-risk populations is a viable option for detecting asymptomatic disease in current (13%) and former (24%) Australian smokers.(4) The purpose of this Evidence Check review is to identify and analyse existing and emerging evidence for LDCT lung cancer screening in high-risk individuals to guide future program and policy planning. Evidence Check questions This review aimed to address the following questions: 1. What is the evidence for the effectiveness of lung cancer screening for higher-risk individuals? 2. What is the evidence of potential harms from lung cancer screening for higher-risk individuals? 3. What are the main components of recent major lung cancer screening programs or trials? 4. What is the cost-effectiveness of lung cancer screening programs (include studies of cost–utility)? Summary of methods The authors searched the peer-reviewed literature across three databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Embase) for existing systematic reviews and original studies published between 1 January 2009 and 8 August 2019. Fifteen systematic reviews (of which 8 were contemporary) and 64 original publications met the inclusion criteria set across the four questions. Key findings Question 1: What is the evidence for the effectiveness of lung cancer screening for higher-risk individuals? There is sufficient evidence from systematic reviews and meta-analyses of combined (pooled) data from screening trials (of high-risk individuals) to indicate that LDCT examination is clinically effective in reducing lung cancer mortality. In 2011, the landmark National Lung Cancer Screening Trial (NLST, a large-scale randomised controlled trial [RCT] conducted in the US) reported a 20% (95% CI 6.8% – 26.7%; P=0.004) relative reduction in mortality among long-term heavy smokers over three rounds of annual screening. High-risk eligibility criteria was defined as people aged 55–74 years with a smoking history of ≥30 pack-years (years in which a smoker has consumed 20-plus cigarettes each day) and, for former smokers, ≥30 pack-years and have quit within the past 15 years.(5) All-cause mortality was reduced by 6.7% (95% CI, 1.2% – 13.6%; P=0.02). Initial data from the second landmark RCT, the NEderlands-Leuvens Longkanker Screenings ONderzoek (known as the NELSON trial), have found an even greater reduction of 26% (95% CI, 9% – 41%) in lung cancer mortality, with full trial results yet to be published.(6, 7) Pooled analyses, including several smaller-scale European LDCT screening trials insufficiently powered in their own right, collectively demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in lung cancer mortality (RR 0.82, 95% CI 0.73–0.91).(8) Despite the reduction in all-cause mortality found in the NLST, pooled analyses of seven trials found no statistically significant difference in all-cause mortality (RR 0.95, 95% CI 0.90–1.00).(8) However, cancer-specific mortality is currently the most relevant outcome in cancer screening trials. These seven trials demonstrated a significantly greater proportion of early stage cancers in LDCT groups compared with controls (RR 2.08, 95% CI 1.43–3.03). Thus, when considering results across mortality outcomes and early stage cancers diagnosed, LDCT screening is considered to be clinically effective. Question 2: What is the evidence of potential harms from lung cancer screening for higher-risk individuals? The harms of LDCT lung cancer screening include false positive tests and the consequences of unnecessary invasive follow-up procedures for conditions that are eventually diagnosed as benign. While LDCT screening leads to an increased frequency of invasive procedures, it does not result in greater mortality soon after an invasive procedure (in trial settings when compared with the control arm).(8) Overdiagnosis, exposure to radiation, psychological distress and an impact on quality of life are other known harms. Systematic review evidence indicates the benefits of LDCT screening are likely to outweigh the harms. The potential harms are likely to be reduced as refinements are made to LDCT screening protocols through: i) the application of risk predication models (e.g. the PLCOm2012), which enable a more accurate selection of the high-risk population through the use of specific criteria (beyond age and smoking history); ii) the use of nodule management algorithms (e.g. Lung-RADS, PanCan), which assist in the diagnostic evaluation of screen-detected nodules and cancers (e.g. more precise volumetric assessment of nodules); and, iii) more judicious selection of patients for invasive procedures. Recent evidence suggests a positive LDCT result may transiently increase psychological distress but does not have long-term adverse effects on psychological distress or health-related quality of life (HRQoL). With regards to smoking cessation, there is no evidence to suggest screening participation invokes a false sense of assurance in smokers, nor a reduction in motivation to quit. The NELSON and Danish trials found no difference in smoking cessation rates between LDCT screening and control groups. Higher net cessation rates, compared with general population, suggest those who participate in screening trials may already be motivated to quit. Question 3: What are the main components of recent major lung cancer screening programs or trials? There are no systematic reviews that capture the main components of recent major lung cancer screening trials and programs. We extracted evidence from original studies and clinical guidance documents and organised this into key groups to form a concise set of components for potential implementation of a national lung cancer screening program in Australia: 1. Identifying the high-risk population: recruitment, eligibility, selection and referral 2. Educating the public, people at high risk and healthcare providers; this includes creating awareness of lung cancer, the benefits and harms of LDCT screening, and shared decision-making 3. Components necessary for health services to deliver a screening program: a. Planning phase: e.g. human resources to coordinate the program, electronic data systems that integrate medical records information and link to an established national registry b. Implementation phase: e.g. human and technological resources required to conduct LDCT examinations, interpretation of reports and communication of results to participants c. Monitoring and evaluation phase: e.g. monitoring outcomes across patients, radiological reporting, compliance with established standards and a quality assurance program 4. Data reporting and research, e.g. audit and feedback to multidisciplinary teams, reporting outcomes to enhance international research into LDCT screening 5. Incorporation of smoking cessation interventions, e.g. specific programs designed for LDCT screening or referral to existing community or hospital-based services that deliver cessation interventions. Most original studies are single-institution evaluations that contain descriptive data about the processes required to establish and implement a high-risk population-based screening program. Across all studies there is a consistent message as to the challenges and complexities of establishing LDCT screening programs to attract people at high risk who will receive the greatest benefits from participation. With regards to smoking cessation, evidence from one systematic review indicates the optimal strategy for incorporating smoking cessation interventions into a LDCT screening program is unclear. There is widespread agreement that LDCT screening attendance presents a ‘teachable moment’ for cessation advice, especially among those people who receive a positive scan result. Smoking cessation is an area of significant research investment; for instance, eight US-based clinical trials are now underway that aim to address how best to design and deliver cessation programs within large-scale LDCT screening programs.(9) Question 4: What is the cost-effectiveness of lung cancer screening programs (include studies of cost–utility)? Assessing the value or cost-effectiveness of LDCT screening involves a complex interplay of factors including data on effectiveness and costs, and institutional context. A key input is data about the effectiveness of potential and current screening programs with respect to case detection, and the likely outcomes of treating those cases sooner (in the presence of LDCT screening) as opposed to later (in the absence of LDCT screening). Evidence about the cost-effectiveness of LDCT screening programs has been summarised in two systematic reviews. We identified a further 13 studies—five modelling studies, one discrete choice experiment and seven articles—that used a variety of methods to assess cost-effectiveness. Three modelling studies indicated LDCT screening was cost-effective in the settings of the US and Europe. Two studies—one from Australia and one from New Zealand—reported LDCT screening would not be cost-effective using NLST-like protocols. We anticipate that, following the full publication of the NELSON trial, cost-effectiveness studies will likely be updated with new data that reduce uncertainty about factors that influence modelling outcomes, including the findings of indeterminate nodules. Gaps in the evidence There is a large and accessible body of evidence as to the effectiveness (Q1) and harms (Q2) of LDCT screening for lung cancer. Nevertheless, there are significant gaps in the evidence about the program components that are required to implement an effective LDCT screening program (Q3). Questions about LDCT screening acceptability and feasibility were not explicitly included in the scope. However, as the evidence is based primarily on US programs and UK pilot studies, the relevance to the local setting requires careful consideration. The Queensland Lung Cancer Screening Study provides feasibility data about clinical aspects of LDCT screening but little about program design. The International Lung Screening Trial is still in the recruitment phase and findings are not yet available for inclusion in this Evidence Check. The Australian Population Based Screening Framework was developed to “inform decision-makers on the key issues to be considered when assessing potential screening programs in Australia”.(10) As the Framework is specific to population-based, rather than high-risk, screening programs, there is a lack of clarity about transferability of criteria. However, the Framework criteria do stipulate that a screening program must be acceptable to “important subgroups such as target participants who are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from disadvantaged groups and people with a disability”.(10) An extensive search of the literature highlighted that there is very little information about the acceptability of LDCT screening to these population groups in Australia. Yet they are part of the high-risk population.(10) There are also considerable gaps in the evidence about the cost-effectiveness of LDCT screening in different settings, including Australia. The evidence base in this area is rapidly evolving and is likely to include new data from the NELSON trial and incorporate data about the costs of targeted- and immuno-therapies as these treatments become more widely available in Australia.
