Résumé :
Working forests are private forests managed not just for timber production but also for a host of valuable ecosystem services like providing for recreation, maintaining habitat for wildlife, and maintaining a healthy watershed. Timber production is an essential ecosystem good or service that supports a number of important industries and provides jobs in Florida. This 6-page fact sheet summarizes the results of several studies to help forest landowners and other stakeholders understand how multiple-use management affects both timber production and other ecosystem services. Résumé :
Nonindustrial private forestlands in Florida provide many environmental benefits, or ecosystem services. Ecosystem services are benefits from nature that are directly enjoyed, consumed, or used by humans, such as water quality improvement or protection, recreation, biodiversity, and even timber. Another benefit from forests that is gaining interest is their ability to store carbon through the photosynthetic capture of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas, in tree, plant, and soil biomass. The carbon dioxide that is stored over the life of a forest, called carbon stocks, is not only important for mitigating greenhouse gas contributions to climate change, but it can also be valued in several markets and incorporated into environmental policy instruments. This 5-page fact sheet was written by Nilesh Timilsina, Francisco J. Escobedo, Alison E. Adams, and Damian C. Adams and published by the UF Department of School of Forest Resources and Conservation April 2017. Original publication date October 2013; revised March2017. Archived 9/18/2020.

Palma-Irizarry, M., Damian-Matsumura, P., Betancourt, M., Romo, S., Perales, G., Lagunas-Martínez, A., Madrid-Marina, M. V., Mejía, O. and Ducolomb, Y. 2012. Identification of novel variants of interferon-tau gene in Bighorn sheep ( Ovis canadensis mexicana ), Pelibuey sheep ( Ovis aries ) and its expression in hybrid blastocysts ( Ovis canadensis×Ovis aries ). Can. J. Anim. Sci. 92: 275–283. The major signal for maternal recognition of pregnancy (MRP) in ruminants is interferon-tau (IFNT). Four novel sequences of the IFNT gene were isolated from genomic DNA obtained from blood samples of Bighorn, Pelibuey or the hybrid ewes. The deduced amino acid sequence of the hybrid ewe showed 100% identity with one Bighorn sheep IFNT sequence, suggesting that this sequence was inherited from Bighorn sheep. The high degree of identity between Pelibuey and Bighorn sheep sequences could be a possible explanation for the successful MRP in some Bighorn hybrid pregnancies. In vivo and in vitro domestic sheep (Ovis aries) and hybrid sheep (Ovis aries×Ovis canadensis) blastocysts were obtained, and IFNT expression was measured by semiquantitative RT-PCR. In vivo and in vitro hybrid blastocysts showed lower expression of IFNT when compared with domestic blastocysts. In conclusion this study showed that there exists an effect of hybridization on IFNT expression and this can affect the MRP.

Résumé :
Cursed crosier and blessed habit: why did Anselm of Lucca not want to be a bishop? Vita Anselmi is a hagiographic piece that presents the life of Anselm, Bishop of Lucca and close collaborator of Pope Gregory VII. The Vita was written shortly after the bishop’s death, probably in 1087, and serves as an important source of information about the Gregorian party in Tuscany and Lombardy. The author is anonymous, but we know that he lived at the court of Matilda of Canossa and was very familiar with the mentality and ideas of the countess’ entourage. In one of the most significant passages of the text the author writes that in 1075 Anselm, tormented by having received investiture with the ring and crosier from the king, left the Bishopric of Lucca and retired to a monastery. Historians who have studied the Vita (C. Violante, E. Pásztor, K. Cushing, P. Golinelli) believe in the veracity of this account; in their opinion Anselm realised that he would be unworthily elevated to episcopal office after the Lateran Synod of 1075, at which he had promulgated a decree against lay investiture. The research of some German scholars (R. Schieffer, J. Englberger) and the analysis of other sources make us understand, however, not only that the Roman Synod had not prohibited investiture “de manu regis” but also that it was by Gregory’s will that Anselm received the episcopacy from Henry IV. The Bishop of Lucca, therefore, must have renounced his office for other reasons. The aim of the paper is to find the real reason for his abdication. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to answer to a more general question: why did some reforming bishops of the eleventh century want to renounce episcopacy? The answer can be found in the letters of Peter Damian, who also asked the pope to be allowed to abandon his episcopal see.

Résumé :
Ingham, Neil J., Sally K. Thornton, Damian McCrossan, and Deborah J. Withington. Neurotransmitter involvement in development and maintenance of the auditory space map in the guinea pig superior colliculus. J. Neurophysiol. 80: 2941–2953, 1998. The mammalian superior colliculus (SC) is a complex area of the midbrain in terms of anatomy, physiology, and neurochemistry. The SC bears representations of the major sensory modalites integrated with a motor output system. It is implicated with saccade generation, in behavioral responses to novel sensory stimuli and receives innervation from diverse regions of the brain using many neurotransmitter classes. Ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (Elvax-40W polymer) was used here to deliver chronically neurotransmitter receptor antagonists to the SC of the guinea pig to investigate the potential role played by the major neurotransmitter systems in the collicular representation of auditory space. Slices of polymer containing different drugs were implanted onto the SC of guinea pigs before the development of the SC azimuthal auditory space map, at ∼20 days after birth (DAB). A further group of animals was exposed to aminophosphonopentanoic acid (AP5) at ∼250 DAB. Azimuthal spatial tuning properties of deep layer multiunits of anesthetized guinea pigs were examined ∼20 days after implantation of the Elvax polymer. Broadband noise bursts were presented to the animals under anechoic, free-field conditions. Neuronal responses were used to construct polar plots representative of the auditory spatial multiunit receptive fields (MURFs). Animals exposed to control polymer could develop a map of auditory space in the SC comparable with that seen in unimplanted normal animals. Exposure of the SC of young animals to AP5, 6-cyano-7-nitroquinoxaline-2,3-dione, or atropine, resulted in a reduction in the proportion of spatially tuned responses with an increase in the proportion of broadly tuned responses and a degradation in topographic order. Thus N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) and non-NMDA glutamate receptors and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors appear to play vital roles in the development of the SC auditory space map. A group of animals exposed to AP5 beginning at ∼250 DAB produced results very similar to those obtained in the young group exposed to AP5. Thus NMDA glutamate receptors also seem to be involved in the maintenance of the SC representation of auditory space in the adult guinea pig. Exposure of the SC of young guinea pigs to γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor blocking agents produced some but not total disruption of the spatial tuning of auditory MURFs. Receptive fields were large compared with controls, but a significant degree of topographical organization was maintained. GABA receptors may play a role in the development of fine tuning and sharpening of auditory spatial responses in the SC but not necessarily in the generation of topographical order of the these responses.

Résumé :
The chemical industry needs to develop clean, efficient and selective procedures to synthesize high added-value fine chemicals and catalytic processes provide powerful tools to reach this goal. The key point to perform sustainable transformations is the choice of catalytic systems that show selectivity, activity and stability, resulting in high TOF (turnover frequency) and TON (turnover number), not to mention an efficient catalyst must be easily recovered and recycled. Based on these concepts, the employment of metal porphyrin complexes in catalysis is constantly growing due to the enormous potential of this class of molecules. Metal porphyrins are robust and their chemo-physical properties can easily be fine-tuned by varying their molecular structure to allow the use of these catalysts to selectively promote a large number of organic transformations. We have studied in depth the employment of metal porphyrin complexes to create new C-N and C-C bonds by using organic azides[1] and diazo compounds[2] and more recently we have focused our interest also on the synthesis of high-added value fine chemicals by using waste, such as CO2, as starting material by applying 100% atom economic procedures.[3] We will present different synthetic protocols which will also be discussed from a mechanistic point of view based on spectroscopic and theoretical studies and the identification of active intermediates.

The aim of this paper is to come back to a data structure representation of graph by permutations. This originated in the years 1960-1970 by contributions due to J. Edmonds [7], A. Jacques [11], W. Tutte [22] in order to consider the embedding of a graph in a surface as a combinatorial object. Some algebraic developments where suggested in [4] and [12]. It was also used for implementation in different situation, like planarity testing by H. de Fraysseix and P. Rosenstiehl [6], computer vision by G. Damiand and A. Dupas [5] or formal proofs by G. Gonthier [9].

Résumé :
BackgroundToll-like receptors (TLR) 7 and 8 are innate sensors of single stranded RNA (ssRNA). Genetic andin vivoevidence suggests that aberrant recognition of RNA-containing autoantigens by TLR7/8 drives autoimmune diseases (Junt and Barchet, 2015). More validation for a pathogenic effect of TLR7 in chronic inflammation comes from recent data showing that a TLR7 gain-of-function mutation is sufficient to drive lupus-like disease (Brown et al., 2022).ObjectivesHere we report on the preclinical characterization of MHV370, a highly selective, orally active TLR7/8 inhibitor for treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases.MethodsWe used a suite of in vitro profiling assays to investigate the effect of MHV370 on TLR responses. This included the stimulation of PBMCs by immune complexes from systemic lupus erythematosus patient sera. Furthermore we characterized MHV370 in different mouse models of acute and chronic TLR7-driven inflammation.ResultsIn vitro,MHV370 interfered with TLR7/8-dependent production of cytokines in humans and mice, most notably of interferon alpha, a clinically validated driver of autoimmune diseases. MHV370 abrogates B cell, monocyte, and neutrophil responses downstream of TLR7/8.In vivo, prophylactic or therapeutic administration of MHV370 suppressed TLR7-dependent cytokines and interferon stimulated genes. In the NZB/W F1 mouse model of lupus, MHV370 prevented halted disease progression and glomerulonephritis. Unlike hydroxychloroquine, MHV370 interfered with cytokine production triggered by immune complexes between systemic lupus erythematosus patient sera and necrotic cell extract, suggesting differentiation from clinical standard of care.ConclusionThe pharmacological data presented here support further development of MHV370 towards clinical proof of concept trials in man.References[1]Brown, G.J., Canete, P.F., Wang, H., Medhavy, A., Bones, J., Roco, J.A., He, Y., Qin, Y., Cappello, J., Ellyard, J.I., et al.(2022). Résumé :
A floristic study of an area is very crucial to determine the status of plant species of particular area or geographical region, as it reflects the whole plant diversity of that area. Our study aimed at identifying the floristic composition of Daman-Simbhanjyang area which included flowering plants, gymnosperms, pteridophytes and bryophytes at wild habitat. The present study has recorded altogether 189 plant species under 163 genera and 90 families. Out of 189 plant species (114 Dicots and 20 Monocots), 134 phanerogams were recorded under 112 genera and 55 families. Asteraceae was found to be the richest family with 14 species among dicots and Orchidaceae (8 spp.) among monocots. Moreover, 30 species of pteridophytes and 22 species of bryophytes were recorded under 28 genera from 15 families and 20 genera from 17 families respectively. However, only three species of gymnosperm were recorded under 3 genera and 3 families at wild habitat. Therefore, the present study has concluded Daman-Simbhanjyang area to be rich in plant species diversity which encompasses many high valued plant species that needs to be conserved and used in sustainable manner.
